Have you gone on a COMREL (community relations) event in a foreign country, helping those sometimes in abject poverty and really dire need? Then I am sure you have experienced the blessings that come from helping others. Being a part of the military family is a call to service in its own right, as we and our families sacrifice time away from each other and even enter into harm’s way for the sake of others.

Acts of service are a key component of most religious faiths. We are called to “love our neighbors as ourselves,” care for the “widow and orphan,” and “give to the near of kin his due, and also to the needy and the wayfarers.”Other wise sayings include“if you light a lamp for somebody, it will also brighten your path,” and “if you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”

The great thing about volunteering that I’ve always found (and I hope you have, too) is that I get so much more than I give. When I’ve helped a blind child ride (and jump) a horse, or shown respect to the homeless as I’ve served them sit-down meals at a soup kitchen,or watched the orphans of Djibouti come crawling out of the mangled metal of a dirt field to come play soccer with us, I’ve always had a great time and come away with a truer perspective on how fortunate we really are. Our problems — while real and important — can be seen in a new light when we interact with those who are suffering in ways we’ve never known.

What could be better than helping others? Why doing it together, of course! NAS Oceana Community Service Coordinator YN1 Victoria Scott plans activities for us every month where we can fellowship together as we represent the Navy in the best light as a welcome and valuable force for good in the community. There are many projects we can do with our families — even with children — to share a an unforgettable experience together. BY AMAANI LYLE American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — The Defense Department’s fiscal year 2015 budget request seeks to balance the nation’s security needs with the realities of fiscal constraints, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Feb. 26.

In a speech at Bloomberg Government’s Defense Transformation Conference, Adm. James A. “Sandy” Winnefeld Jr. said the changing national security environment, aftereffects of $37 billion in fiscal 2013 sequestration spending cuts and the outlook for defense spending in the years to come posed myriad challenges to budget planners.

“The world has changed a lot since World War II,”Winnefeld said.“The nature of warfare has changed, [and] the cost of people, ships and airplanes has gone up along with their capability — our nation’s fiscal environment has changed.”

Readiness and modernization were key factors in a process that required many tough decisions on matters such as force size and the military’s current weapon systems and infrastructure,the admiral said.If the balance achieved in the budget request is altered as the request makes its way to law, he warned, something more important would have to give.

“Every efficiency we need that’s denied, every program cut we need that’s reversed, every element of old force structure ... we’re required to keep will require a decrease in readiness or modernization somewhere else,” he said.

Ultimately,Winnefeld said,this would mean more people could go into combat with insufficient training and outdated equipment, and fewer of them would come home.

The strategy-driven budget request reflects “fundamental decisions” made in a complex and collaborative process over the last year,Winnefeld told the conference audience.

“It’s about the ends, ways and means, and ensuring that the enduring and resultant risk is acceptable to us as a nation,” he said.The process included careful assessment of the challenges the military is likely to face in a rapidly changing world, he added.

“Over the last decade, we’ve been mostly focused on a single type of war, but the world has changed, and we need to restore our readiness for the full spectrum of what we might face in the future,” the admiral said.“We’ll continue to build innovative, operational concepts for how we’ll fight, including extending what we’ve learned over the last 12 years of counterinsurgency into other types of fights.”

Winnefeld said the U.S. military must balance its posture around the globe with a focus on permanent, pre-positional and rotational presence, as well as surge capability.“We’ll also re-emphasize building partnership capacity, because we’re going to be relying more on our partners in the future,” he added.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s imperative to invest prudently and examine the growth of compensation also factored into the budget request, the vice chairman told the conference audience.

“Our men and women in uniform deserve the best possible support we can provide, including solid compensation, especially at a time when they’ve sacrificed more than [they would in] normal peacetime deployments,” he said.“We’ve enjoyed a high rate of growth of compensation that finally corrected some of the serious deficiencies of the 1990s.” But the time has come, he added, to gradually adjust compensation growth to set and sustain the right level as the nation moves off its 13-year war footing and fiscal constraints curtail overall defense spending.

Over many months of planning the budget request,DOD officials sought to produce the most appropriate package of adjustments in compensation and benefits, Winnefeld said.

“The chiefs and senior enlisted advisors of the services were fully involved and fully consulted,” he noted.And he emphasized that the budget request does not call for a pay cut for service members — it includes a 1 percent pay raise for most service members, while freezing pay at current levels for general and flag officers.

Her face was full of excitement and her eyes swelled up with tears when her name was announced. Her journey has been one of overcoming challenges but that has not slowed her a bit.Maydak will now move on to compete for the U.S. Fleet Forces Shore Sailor of the Year award.

Born and raised in Amarillo,Texas,Maydak enlisted in the Navy as an undesignated seaman.Within a year, she made the rate of boatswain’s mate third class and served her initial commitment.

At the conclusion of her first enlistment, Maydak had to make a tough decision.“I was a single parent at the time, so I made the decision to leave the military,” said Maydak.

During civilian life, Maydak met Darren Maydak, a Sailor, and now a chief engineman and soon after, they were married. Maydak decided to return to service,explaining how it was her love for the Navy and the camaraderie of her fellow Sailors that influenced her decision.This time Maydak reenlisted as an aircrew survival equipmentman, where she was stationed at Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department/Fleet Readiness Center Mid-Atlantic Oceana.

“I have watched my wife go from junior ranks to senior ranks with nothing short of perfection,” said ENC Maydak.

“My wife not only inspires everyone she works with, but she also inspires me.”

Now with almost 17 years in the Navy,Maydak is working

at CNAL at the Aviation Life Support System Desk (ALSS), delivering equipment to the fleet and reviewing technical directives for the east and west coast.

“She is an outstanding first class filling a billet of a chief petty officer,”said Senior Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic Jay La Porte, Maydak’ s supervisor.“This job has a whole lot of responsibility and she is doing a great job.”

In addition to her regular duties, she is involved with various command collateral duties. She served as the president for the command’s MWR program, assists the training department by logging Sailor’s accountability of training into Fleet Temps and manages situation reports for the command.

“I just try to be me,” said Maydak.“The Navy is always taking care of me, so I am always taking care of the Navy.”

Outside of the Navy, Maydak participates in various volunteer opportunities, such as taking on the role of troop leader for the Girl Scouts of America. She is also an active member of the “We Promise Foundation.” She said both programs have had a very positive impact on her own daughters and takes joy in giving back.

“My daughter was a ‘[Make a] Wish Child,’” said Maydak.

“So we wanted to pay forward the experience that we got.”

The “We Promise Foundation” is dedicated to making dreams come true for children who struggle with severe illness or tremendous hardship.

Despite the family’s hardship and with the support of her command and outside organizations, Maydak was able to continue to grow as a leader.

College accreditation type may affect Sailors’ wallets

HENSON Center for Personal and Professional Development Public Affairs Officer Sailors working on completing a degree should ensure their school has the appropriate type of accreditation or it could cost them money later, said Center for Personal and Professional Development education professionals Feb. 24.

“Most students know the school they attend should have some sort of accreditation as a way of ensuring the quality of their education, but they don’t understand how important the type of accreditation is in their school selection,” said Ernest D’Antonio, director of Navy Voluntary Education at the Center for Personal and Pro-

fessional Development. “I’ve seen way too many examples of service members using their tuition assistance or G.I.Bill education benefits to earn a degree at a school whose credits aren’t transferrable to or recognized by other schools. And when a Sailor’s benefit is spent, it’s spent.”

According to Raymond Sayre, director of the Navy College Office in San Diego, there are three kinds of accreditation. One is regional, which is granted by an accrediting organization in one of six regions in the United States.“Regional accrediting organizations review educational institutions as a whole,” he said.“Schools with regionally accredited programs focus on academic theory for a full range of degrees from accounting to zoology at all educational levels.”

National accreditation is another type.

Maydak began competing at the next level March 2.Ten Sailors are competing for the USFF SOY award, which will include five Sailors on sea duty and five on shore duty.The Sailors will participate in a week of events, in which two will be recognized as fleet’s best. The winner will be announced at the Sailor of the Year Luncheon at Vista Point at Naval Station Norfolk March 6.

Sayre said nationally accredited institutions fill a different educational need than those with regional accreditation. “The real difference is that national accrediting bodies focus on operational/technical skills.These accreditors tend to focus on a particular discipline such as business or technical skills, or distance learning,” he said.

The third kind is accreditation for specialized programs and single-purpose organizations.A specialized accreditation is typically granted for a particular section or discipline within a regionally accredited educational institution, such as for a school’s law, medical or engineering program.

It’s confusing because it’s complicated, according to D’Antonio.“The key for Sailors is to understand how accreditation directly relates to their educational goals,” he said.

“This is part of why Navy College Program education professionals exist — to help Sailors make the best choice for them.”

Sayre pointed out that one type of accreditation isn’t necessarily better than the others; it is simply contingent on the student’s objectives. “It depends on what

professional path Sailors are choosing,” he said.“If they want a hands-on career in the vocational or technical world such as auto repair, electronics, nuclear technician, etc., they may benefit by choosing a school with national accreditation. If their choice is the academic world — teacher, law, business or doctor, for example — they ought to choose regional accreditation. Many nationally accredited schools offer advanced vocational or technical education and training programs that are excellent and meet the needs for which they were designed.”

A handful of schools have both regional and national accreditation, but Sayre said it isn’t common.

Gary Henwood, an educational services specialist at Navy College Office (NCO) Whidbey Island, Wash., said it’s important for Sailors to view their school choice in the broader spectrum of their current — and future — educational goals. “When Sailors apply for commissioning programs such as Medical Enlisted Commissioning — See Accreditation, Page 7

Some perceive that the true award is the character they are building and the treasure they are storing up in heaven.

But back down here on earth,the military wants someone like you with energy and talents to be on the team.This is why I encourage people to earn these medals and awards, so the Navy and U.S. Marine Corps will know that you are that well-rounded, capable person they are looking for to serve and lead the great people of the armed forces.

Idlebird spoke of how Maggie Walker opened the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in 1903. Her successful ideas influenced many programs in communities today,such as the “Bank on Virginia Beach” program which was established January 2012.

Blackmer spoke about the challenging life of Jesse Brown, the first African-American aviator in the U.S. Navy, who was killed in a jet crash during the Korean War. Following the program, everyone enjoyed a meal of macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, green beans, cornbread and shrimp gumbo, with red velvet cake for dessert.

NAVAL STATION NORFOLK HOLDS CHANGE OF COMMAND

Naval Station Norfolk held a change of command ceremony aboard the installation Feb. 14.

Capt. Robert Clark relieved Capt. David A. Culler Jr. as the installation’s commanding officer.

“He is one of the greatest officers I have ever had the privilege of serving with,”said Culler.“I expect nothing but great things from him and Naval Station Norfolk.”

Culler and Clark worked together during Culler’s tenure as commanding officer, establishing the present Naval Station Norfolk mission, and he is dedicated to continuing the standard of excellence the installation has achieved.

“Naval Station Norfolk is committed to the safety, security, and continuous improvement in the quality of life and quality of service to our warfighters and their families,” said Culler.“Failure is never an option.”

Clark said his goal and challenge as commanding officer is not only to maintain the installation’s superb reputation, but to also keep striving for the next level of excellence.

“With the world’s greatest group of Sailors behind me, there is no limit to the greatness Naval Station Norfolk can achieve,” said Clark. “I am proud to serve with each and every one of them.”

Culler took command of the world’s largest naval base in 2012.He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as executive and commanding officer of VFA-106 Commanding Officer Cmdr. “He radiates such a positive energy that everyone wants to work for him,”said Smith.“His selfless devotion not only to Naval Station Norfolk, but to the Navy, speaks volumes as to the caliber of man he is.We wish him well in the next chapter of his life and will always call him friend.”

Culler said, although a challenging position, there was no greater honor than to lead the Navy’s finest installation.

“It was an honor to lead such a great group of Sailors,” said Culler.“I could not think of a better way to spend my last years in the Navy.Thank you to everyone for their support and for making my job that much easier.”

Clark reported to Naval Station Norfolk to serve as the executive officer in August 2012.A native Virginian, Clark graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology in 1989 and was commissioned through the Hampton Roads Naval ROTC. Clark’s ships include USS Wisconsin (BB 64), USS Chancellorsville (CG 62), USS San Jacinto (CG 56), USS Philippine Sea (CG 58),where he served as the executive officer, and commanding officer of USS Mason (DDG 87). He also served as the operations officer for Carrier Strike Group 2, deploying with the USS George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group.

Shore assignments include Tactical Training Group Atlantic, chief staff officer for Commander, Destroyer Squadron 26, and U.S. Joint Forces Command as warfighter improvement division chief.

For this reason, Henwood advises Sailors specifically trying for a commission to ensure they attend an accredited school whose credits are transferrable to other programs since it’s up to each school what transfer credits it will accept.

Sailors not applying for a commissioning program should still carefully consider how they’re using the Tuition Assistance program to complete classes toward their degree, or it could result in bad news. Henwood gave an example of a Sailor he worked with last year who completed a Bachelor of Science in Business from a nationally accredited school, which he used Navy Tuition Assistance to complete. He then applied to a regionally accredited school’s MBA program, but that school didn’t honor his bachelor’s degree. “Because the Navy only pays for one bachelor’s degree, he will have to go back and pay out-of-pocket for a regionally accredited degree program or return to the original school for its MBA, which limits his choices.”

While this is one example, there is no steadfast rule. Sayre pointed out that some regionally accredited schools do accept credits earned from a nationally accredited school.“A degree from many nationally accredited schools can make you eligible for a commissioning program, depending on which school you earned your degree from,” Sayre said. “Also, a high-tech degree

from a nationally accredited school may make you more competitive for employment after completion of military obligation.”

The U.S. Department of Education has a College Navigator (http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/) on its website to assist students in evaluating schools in areas such as costs,financial aid access and graduation rates. Navy students have an additional resource — education professionals at Navy College offices and the Virtual Education Center.

“Degree types are an individual choice,” Sayre said. “Our job as counselors is to provide information — without opinion — that enables the individual to make educated choices.”

Sayre said Sailors should thoroughly research schools and ask the right questions.

“Any school an individual is going to invest in should be ‘checked out’ to ensure the institution is able to meet the needs and long-term goals of the individual. Impartial, professional counseling and advisement is critical,” he said.

According to D’Antonio, Voluntary Education and Navy College Program professionals are committed to helping Sailors reach their educational and credentialing goals.“We provide the necessary academic programs that meet the needs of an educated force and provide the needed academic advice and counseling that guides our Sailors toward their life-long learning goals,” he said.“When we are successful in this mission, we have served the Navy and the Sailor.”

His first instinct was to gather his thoughts and ensure he spoke slowly when it was his turn, because at the time he still had a pronounced accent and there was nothing worse than getting mocked by preteens who claimed they couldn’t understand what he was saying.

Burton said his response ended up being more of a question, asking“Why isn’t black history taught with the rest of American history?” Burton said he doesn’t remember the full context of his teacher’s response, but the gist of it was,“Black History Month was needed to affirm the positive contributions of African- Americans to American society and also to ensure that the gains made from the Civil Rights Movement were maintained.”

Burton also discussed the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington, celebrated last year, his views of what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a Dream Speech”gave to the nation and his thoughts of this year’s Black History Month theme.

“The theme of today’s commemoration, Civil Rights in America, I think, is intended to highlight the important positive changes that the Civil Rights Movement and the legislation that followed brought to the lives of ordinary Americans, but it was also intended to illustrate the struggle we continue to have … and the right lessons to learn from civil rights in America for today and looking into the future,” Burton said.

Burton ended his speech by discussing how far African-Americans have come in the past years and the memorialization of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other heroes like him.

“To fully understand the legacy of civil rights in America, we cannot restrict ourselves to the memories and representations only of the heroes, because that will deprive them of the power to inspire us to action,” Burton said. “For if we believe that they are somehow fundamentally and sensually greater or different from who we are,then we render ourselves unable to follow in their example.”

“So, in remembering the past and forging towards the future of civil rights in America, I ask us to consider how we commemorate heroes like Dr. King … that we use their legacy to inspire us to take action against injustice everywhere and to always stand up for what is right, even in the face of overwhelming opposition,” Burton said.

After Burton’s speech,Holder introduced a dance performance by Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) 1st Class Angela Gathings, a student at NMITC. “In the Americas, enslaved Africans danced to help connect them with their homeland’s cultural tradition in an effort to keep those traditions alive,” Holder said.

“Dance affirmed light and the outlook of a better future.”

Williams explained that in the book Washington goes to Europe to observe what he called the man farthest down.

“He comes to some really interesting conclusions about the value of hope,”Williams said. “His idea was that Americans, regardless of race and regardless of what they were doing at a given moment,always had hope for the future.” “[Washington] found that when he was talking to these folks in Europe, that they were very comfortable in their station in life and one of the factors in America is that none of us are ever comfortable with our station in life,”Williams said.“We’re always striving to reach something else, to do something else, always hoping for the future. So, I think that’s part of our heritage as people who came over to a new world, I think it’s part of our common heritage, coming out of a lot of backgrounds, particularly African-Americans who struggled

After the ceremony guests were invited to enjoy traditional African-American food at a potluck hosted by NMITC’s heritage committee who organized the celebration.

A member of the heritage committee spoke about the importance of taking the time to celebrate heritage events.

“We all come from different places, whether you’re female, male, black, white, Chinese,whatever,we come from different cities, we come from different countries, we have people in the military from different countries, and to be able to come together and learn about those things and understand that our diversity makes us stronger, together as a team, I think that’s important,” IS1 Nicole Joyner said.

Fund Drive: Helps NMCRS provide services to Sailors, Marines and families in need — Continued from page 1 in 1904 and we have grown to the active duty service member and then to the retirees, as the donations started increasing.”

In addition to active duty service members, retirees, widows of retirees and active duty service members who died on duty are also eligible for NMCRS services.

“Reservists get a little tricky… we’re a little bit more limited, but we entertain any request,” Sheats said.

NMCRS offers interest free loans and sometimes grants “if the situation warrants.” Sheats says they’re happy to do budgets with anybody.“Sometimes it’s just a matter of getting the information down on paper so they can see where their money is going and get some recommendations on how they can improve upon that.”

One of the classes NMCRS offers is “Budget for Baby,” which Sheats says is great for first time parents, but not limited to new parents.The class is approximately 90 minutes long and the instructor talks about the impact a baby can have on your budget.

“First time parents may not be aware of the cost of diapers and formulas and how much it’s going to cost to raise a child,” Sheats said.

Currently the Oceana office is participating in a pilot program where the attendees have a choice between baby products or a $50 gift card. Sheats said it just depends on what the parents need more.“Do they need the money to take care of something they don’t have, or do they need the baby products to help clothe their children and newborns? They all still get the blanket and the bag that goes out with them.”

Another service offered by NMCRS is visiting nurses.

“Visiting nurses has been around since we started back in 1904 and they are best known for coming out and visiting new moms,”Sheats said.“They talk to them about how to take care of the baby and take care of themselves, but they are not limited to that.”

Sheats said the nurses are also happy to come out and talk to anybody with a medical situation or concern.

“Maybe an active duty service member was in the hospital with an illness or a surgery and they’re home recovering and just need to make sure that they’re doing their aftercare properly; the nurse is happy to do that,” Sheats said.

According to Sheats, the nurses also go out and help ailing widows and retirees;it’s just a matter of contacting the nurses to set up a time to visit.

In the loans and grants category, Sheats explained the typical things that NMCRS helps service members with includes basic living expenses, rent, utilities, food, medical and dental costs, car repairs and emergency travel situations for the death and illnesses of family members.

“I can’t tell you how many service members I’ve seen over the past 14 years of doing this that didn’t realize we can help them with their plane ticket to go home and help with their sick mom or dad or attend a funeral,” Sheats

Kit Chope gave the closing remarks for the event.

“I got the easy job today,I got to come eat breakfast with you all and I get to talk about the easiest subject to talk about and that is supporting our own,” Chope said.

“Every single one of us knows Sailors and Marines who have been affected positively by this program,” Chope said.“Please make sure that your folks know that there is an avenue out there for help … make sure you’re talking about it, make sure you’re putting in the plan of the week … the key is communication.”

In 2013 the NMCRS provided more than $48 million dollars to more than 65,000 service members, approximately 14,000 of those service members in this area.

Sheats said the donations help replenish that “pot” of the grants they provided and it also replenishes to the point where NMCRS may be able to extend their services.

“The purpose of the active duty fund drive is to raise awareness to our service members that we are a resource out there for them,”Sheats said.

Sheats also asked the guests at the breakfast to educate their service members about NMCRS and let them know NMCRS is a resource.

The budget request does include a steep reduction in subsidies for commissaries, though overseas stores and those in remote locations that don’t offer discount grocery shopping in the local area will continue to be subsidized. Just as military exchanges do, other commissaries would have to operate without the subsidy.

Potential changes to the retirement system loom, Winnefeld reported, but Hagel and other defense officials repeatedly have emphasized that the budget request makes no recommendations on that front. A congressionally appointed panel is examining the system and will submit its report later this year. The Defense Department’s position is that any changes adopted from the panel’s report should apply only to people who join the military once the changes take effect.

“Some might claim that any adjustment in the trajectory of compensation growth, even one that accounts for budget or market changes, is a violation of a promise — something gained that can now not be changed,” the vice chairman said. But the nation and its service members need a modern and ready force, he added.

“The most important way we keep faith with ... the men and women who volunteer to defend our nation is to only send them into combat with the best possible training and equipment, and to take care of them when they come home,” he said.

Overall,Winnefeld said, military compensation accounts for 10 percent of the savings in the proposed budget.

“These savings are gradual, they’re measured and they’re fair,”he said.“The remain-

ing 90 percent of the savings that we’re finding comes out of the other two-thirds of our budget, which pays for modernization and readiness, as well as end-strength costs.”

The budget request enables the Defense Department to execute the president’s strategic guidance, defend the homeland, conduct sustained counterterrorism operations and deter aggression in multiple regions, the vice chairman said. And while a smaller force will mean less deterrent presence and a smaller margin for error in combat, he added, much of the risk will be mitigated by the two principal U.S. advantages: the all-volunteer force and the nation’s ability to innovate across every discipline.

The budget request provides for $115 billion above the sequestration spending level in fiscal 2015, but unless Congress acts to stop it, sequestration will return in fiscal 2016.“Our submission adheres to the Bipartisan Budget Act, providing the programs we believe would allow us to continue executing our strategy, as well as what it would look like under sequester,” Winnefeld said.

The vice chairman acknowledged that because the choices often were difficult in formulating the budget request, turmoil probably lies ahead as the final budget takes form.“Let’s face it — it’s hard to cut this kind of money out of any budget and expect people to cheer you on,” he said.

But he emphasized that the proposal allows the military to continue fulfilling its mission.

“We believe this budget, challenging and difficult as it will be to pass and execute, will allow us to maintain the most powerful military in the world, to protect the American people,and to continue standing by our allies and our friends around the world,” he said.

Consistent approach pays with 60 pound weight loss for retired ofďŹ cer

BY CATHY HEIMER Jet Observer Manuel Ramos, a retired Navy lieutenant, has used a combination of exercise at the Dam Neck Annex Fitness Center, and regular attendance at the local Weight Watchers, to drop more than 60 pounds in the past 14 months. “I’ve basically lost a four-year-old,� joked Ramos about his accomplishment. His approach of “being consistent and doing it slowly,� has paid off for him.

Ramos, a former Arabic linguist, retired in 2007. While on active duty, it was always a priority to maintain physical ďŹ tness standards. His ďŹ nal two years were spent at the Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center on Dam Neck Annex, where mandatory physical training was part of his daily routine. But when his weight reached a high of 280 pounds in January 2013, Ramos knew he had to take control of his health. That number was an “eye-opener, game changer� for Ramos, who now weighs in at 219.

Also spurring him into taking charge of his health was his mother’s heart attack six months earlier in June 2012. “After her heart attack, she encouraged her family and friends to live a healthier lifestyle. I took that message on board. I didn’t say it was easy but I’m trying,� he said.

From his active duty days,Ramos was familiar with what Dam Neck Fitness Center offered. He was comfortable coming back and found the staff,especially Cheryl Krieger, a recreation assistant at the ďŹ tness center, very supportive of his goals. In the beginning, Krieger showed him how to use the equipment at the gym and made suggestions to prevent injuries, such as easy jogging on the treadmill, which he described as “less wear and tear on his knees.â€?

Dam Neck is close by to his home in Red Mill Farms and Ramos has made it a point to be a regular visitor,especially on Mondays, his day off. Whenever possible, Ramos now jumps on one of the bikes during Krieger’s spin class. His workouts at the gym now incorporate all the machines and he admits to “actually looking forward to workouts.�

Along with making time to hit the gym at least two or three times a week, Ramos has made many changes to his diet. Although he still enjoys red meat, he’s added more salads, fresh vegetables and homemade soups. He has also completely cut out soda and doesn’t miss it.The one thing he hasn’t given up is “a lot of black coffee ‌ it’s a hangover from my Navy days,â€? he laughed.

Because of the necessity of medication to control his elevated cholesterol, his doctor encouraged the weight loss. “I’m in my forties and this is the time to start making those changes,� said Ramos.

Encouraged by his doctor to join Weight Watchers, Ramos found support during weekly meetings at Red Mill Commons, where he learned about healthy eating and the portion size, as being instrumental to his success. He also began documenting his daily weight,hopping on the scale each morning at the same time, as well as recording his food intake and discussing both at the support meetings.

In addition to the ďŹ tness center, he stretches and does basic calisthenics at home to maintain exibility, and enjoys bowling on the weekends with his family, which includes his wife and 14-year-old twin daughters. “It’s good to have a variety because if you do the same thing over and over, it becomes monotonous,â€? said Ramos.

His girls also enjoy coming to the gym occasionally with him and his wife has been very supportive and happy with the changes.

His goal is to lose about another 20 pounds and stabilize his weight between 200 - 210.
