Life and death

BY LT. JOHN GIBSON Carrier Air Wing 3 Chaplain “Someday I hope you get the chance, to live like you were dying,” Tim McGraw (Skydiving).

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil,” The Apostle Paul (Romans 5:15-16) A while back, my wife and I had wills prepared.Why did we do this? Is it because we are expecting to die soon?

No…and yes.

No, we aren’t afraid that death might be imminent for either of us. Both of us are in our early-to-mid 30s, in decent health (despite the onslaught of cold symptoms for both of us that tend to characterize this time of year), and are looking forward to enjoying watching our 6-month old daughter grow up right before our eyes for many years. So why the advance preparation for an event that is likely (we hope) to not occur for many years?

Well, that brings us to the “yes” portion of the answer to “is it because we’re expecting to die soon?”

You see,death is inevitable.It is the unavoidable end to this thing we call life on earth. Ever since the Garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve said “yes” to Satan and disobeyed God, death has been a tragic and unnatural element to human life; one that God himself never intended to be a part of the creation order, but one that was introduced by our own sin and wrongdoing. Ever since then, human beings have had to deal with death in the form of prolonging life for as long as we can, as well as preparing for certain death at some point; often a point that is entirely unknown to us.

Many of us do not have the luxury of knowing when our time on earth will be up. For some of us, factors such as terminal illness might provide a general window as to when that event might take place for us. But the truth remains that our life span is largely unknown.

This then raises the question: What are you doing with the time that you have been given? Are you loving those closest to you, or are your relationships mired — See Life span, Page 13

Jonathan Greenert, and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Mike Stevens visited Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story (JEBLCFS) to provide Sailors an opportunity to speak with senior leadership Jan. 24.

CNO addressed sexual assault, current and future maritime operations and budget stability. Greenert also reenlisted six Sailors and presented awards to five Sailors and one civilian.

“It’s great for the MCPON and I to be here at Little Creek,” said Greenert.“What we get out of this most is listening and learning.”

“This is how we keep our finger on the pulse — being here having conversations with the fleet,” said Stevens.“If I don’t get the opportunity to do this, I would quickly become detached and not really understand all the challenges and issues and, just as importantly, the best practices that all of you use every day to lead your folks.”

Greenert and Stevens then answered a myriad of questions on upcoming events, manning, sea rotation, flight safety, administrative redundancies and budget stability.

“We have a stable budget now,” said Greenert. “When you have a stable budget, you can plan ahead for maintenance, training and hiring. We have a lot more to look forward to in 2014 compared to the past 18 months.”

After the all-hands call Greenert, sat down for a“Conversation with a Shipmate,” an Internet video series addressing key issues in the Navy.

The CNO’s conversation highlighted the importance of Navy and Marine Corps integration.

“The nation needs the Navy and Marine Corps team,” said Greenert.“We’re absolutely unbeatable at what we do, which is amphibious operations and expeditionary operations.We are at our best operating together.”

Greenert ended the conversation by thanking the Marine Corps brothers and sisters. He also thanked the Sailors for their amazing flexibility. His last words were of his gratefulness to the families who support the Sailors and Marines who serve and allow them to do what they do.

Brent Kyler, commanding officer,Training Support Center Hampton Roads (TSCHR) was given a tour of Birdneck Elementary School by Principal Irvin Beard Jan. 13.

Birdneck Elementary School and TSCHR have been Partners in Education (PIE) dating back to 1991 when TSCHR was formerly named Fleet CombatTraining Center Atlantic.

Lt. Cmdr. Michael Nix, TSCHR executive officer, and CS2 (SW/AW) Yvener Plaisimond, PIE coordinator, also toured the school.

PIE provides TSCHR Sailors the opportunity to interact with students in kindergarten through fifth grade. PIE is a non-profit organization consisting of education partners focused on ensuring all students leave school with the academic skills necessary. Birdneck and TSCHR share a common goal of enriching the educational experience of the students through positive interaction with adult role models and mentors.

Birdneck offers a variety of unique programs, such as a 5th grade after-school robotics club, an after-school LEGO Robotics Club for students in 3rd and 4th grades, and high tech classrooms equipped with laptop computers, iPads, smart tables and smart boards.

“This is a great partnership, with a myriad of volunteer opportunities. I will continue to steer the Sailors that are on hold awaiting instruction to volunteer, but I want to expand this program and open it up to my staff, so they can experience the benefits of volunteering,” said Kyler.

instance, say 700 students check out two books a week, which means 1,400 books are returned every week and those books have to be put back on the shelves in the right place, so that the books can be checked out again, and that’s never ending. That alone, is a tremendous help.

Some of our students come from single parent families and working parents who have little time to dedicate to education, so it’s up to our teachers and volunteers who are role models and mentors that help fill in the gaps,” said Beard.

“Community service strengthens the morale of military personnel and the teaming of the command, because it gives us the opportunity to step out and do something different other than our day-to-day duties. It gives us a sense of pride and accomplishment to see the children smile when we help,” said Plaisimond.“I believe that community service is very important for Sailors because it sets a positive military presence in the local community.”

TSCHR is working closely with Beard and his staff to generate more opportunities for Sailors to participate this year.

“This is an excellent partnership. We hope to make an impact on these children and we hope it will equally impact our Sailors who will volunteer their time,” said Kyler.

“What we see is an investment to be engaged in young people so they grow up to not only know who we are as Sailors, but who we are as volunteers giving back to the community.”

As the final controller withiin the Air Traffic Control Divission for the Air Operations D Department, Glass’ on-the-job ttraining techniques contribu uted to 25 air traffic control qualifications, increasing the air traffic control facility management and operational capabilities by 18 percent.

Glass served as the secretary for the NAS Oceana First Class Petty Officers Association and was a key figure in planning and executing the inaugural 2013 Children’s Christmas Breakfast.He also helped raise $139 for the Holiday Assistance Program which provides food and gifts to NAS Oceana Sailors, Marines and their families.

Collateral duties for Glass include arrival controller and training petty officer within the AirTraffic Control Division.

Glass was also the chairman for the Command Blue Jacket of the Quarter Board during the 4th quarter, a petty officer indoctrination instructor and a command general military training (GMT) instructor.

She coorO dinated six hours of maintenance d time to troubleshoot and repair two t faults affecting the AN/GPN-30 Digif tal Air Surveillance Radar system, ensuring that the radar’s offline time caused no impact to air operations by conducting maintenance outside of the normal flying hours.

Other duties for Eisenmenger include preparing the division watchbill, scheduling duty technician and division duty driver.

In addition to her professional duties, Eisenmenger scored an outstanding on the most recent physical readiness test and led the divisional physical training plan, ensuring peak physical fitness levels and healthy lifestyle choices.This resulted in no failures for the physical fitness assessments for any GEMD petty officers. She has completed four 5Ks, one 10K and a 10-mile race during this quarter. She placed first in her age group at the NAS Oceana Pumpkin Patch 5K. Eisenmenger organized the division’s adoption of a two-mile section of Dam Neck Road with the Virginia Beach Adopt-aHighway program, cleaning up the highway and removing 125 pounds of litter.

Up-to-date emergency data critical for family readiness From Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs MILLINGTON,Tenn.(NNS) — “It’s not going to happen to me,” is probably something each of the Sailors who died in 2013 was thinking. Considering only one percent of these deaths were in theater, it is important that Sailors prepare for the unexpected, Navy Casualty officials said Jan. 17.

“Sailors often don’t take the time to update their record of emergency data (NAVPERS 1070/602, or Page 2), or their Service Members’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) elections.

While command leadership works diligently to ensure their Sailors have done this, the best and most reliable person to ensure records are up to date, is you,” said Cheryl Dockery, branch head, Navy Casualty Operations.

“We take the death of a Sailor very seriously, and intend to provide for the primary next of kin and each additional ben-

eficiary as compassionately and professionally as possible,” Dockery said.“Too many times we’ve discovered that Sailors don’t take the time to update their Record of Emergency Data (Page 2), or their SGLI, and that causes undue stress for their families.We only have the Sailor’s documents to rely on — when there is a discrepancy, we are obligated to ensure payments are made in accordance with the Sailor’s desires.”

Sailors are encouraged to review their current documents in the Electronic Service Record (ESR), and check their Leave and Earning Statement (LES) to ensure the deductions for SGLI premiums match their intent.

“We need Sailors — and commands, for that matter — to be proactive in encouraging regular reviews and updates of beneficiaries and Page 2s.They should also keep hard copies of all documents on hand,” said Dockery.

During the quarter, B Bates was selected to ccompete in the Best of tthe Mess chef competittion against all the gallleys in the Hampton Roads, winning first R place. He was also selected as Culinary Specialist of the Month for the Hornet’s Nest Galley.

Bates was selected as the Hornet’s Nest Galley watch captain, a position normally held by a first class petty officer. As watch captain, Bates leads 18 culinary specialists and 25 civilian contract mess attendants in serving more than 750 meals daily. He also improved all paperwork accuracy from 90 percent to 98 percent.

She also wrote 13 incident complaint reports, ten of which were criminal in nature.

Cole helped 15 of her peers by creating healthy nutrition and exercise plans which resulted in all 15 Sailors increasing their scores for the Physical Readiness Test.

HS-5 transitions to HSC-5

BY MCSN TAYLOR N. STINSON Navy Public Affairs Support Element, East Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 5 transitioned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 5 during a ceremony Jan. 24 at Naval Station Norfolk.

The new platform, which includes the MH-60R “Seahawk” and MH-60S “Knighthawk,” will replace the SH-60F and HH60H. The transition itself placed new challenges and definite changes for the squadron in training and in atmosphere “The big glaring change is the airframe.

It is just leaps and bounds ahead in terms of technology and capability,” said Cmdr.

The HSC-5“Nightdippers”returned from deployment in July 2013 and began the transition to the new platform of MH-60S by sending pilots and aircrew through schools in San Diego, as well as training with another squadron, HSC-2, in Norfolk, said Lt. Chris Hoffmann, public affairs officer for HSC-5.

In preparation for the transition to HSC, HS-5 sent aviation ordnancemen, avia-

tion electrician’s mates, and aviation electronics technicians to San Diego for four months of training while some pilots and members of the aircrew, specifically maintainers, remained in Norfolk to train with HSC-2.

HSC-2 “Fleet Angels” assisted HS-5 with training and requalifying all maintainers with the new technology and format of the MH-60S and MH-60R helicopters. HSC2 will also assist HS-5 by continuing to cover the anti-submarine warfare mission that HSC-5 is losing.

“We’ve renewed our focus on our combat search and rescue, naval special warfare support, and anti-surface warfare missions, and that’s not to exclude logistics,” said Kelley.

However, with all the new challenges and changes that HSC-5 faces, the squadron remains enthusiastic with the transition and continues to push forward.

“Everybody is really excited to get back to flying and get up to operating speed again,” said Hoffmann. “Hopefully, we will be able to go out to help everybody on the front lines again.”

Boyd and Cmdr.ForrestYoung,VFA105’s commanding officer, were the first two U.S. Navy pilots to land on the French aircraft carrier during the current period of operations.

French aircraft also took advantage of combined operations to land on and launch from Harry S.Truman.

“It’s a great opportunity to test our interoperability through this kind of experience,” said a French Rafale pilot known as“Pronto.”“I have already landed on an American aircraft carrier but it was the first time for me to do it with a Rafale F-3.”

The Rafale F-3 is a single-seat jet fighter and the most advanced in France’s fighter inventory.

Like Boyd, Pronto noted the difference in the size of the two flight

decks and a few operational differences. However, he said he faced no challenges in landing on Harry S.Truman.

“There were no difficulties,” he said.“The main difference is the size of the deck and the fact that it’s full of planes when we land. Some of our procedures are also different.”

In addition to launching and recovering on their counterparts’flight decks, U.S. and French pilots have also participated closely together in air defense, a war at sea exercise and a variety of other operational and training scenarios.

HST CSG and French Task Force 473 will continue operating together throughout the month of January to enhance levels of cooperation and interoperability, enhance mutual defense capabilities and promote longterm regional stability.

TR celebrates 103 years of carrier aviation

BY MC3 HEATH ZEIGLER USS Theodore Roosevelt Public Affairs USSTHEODORE ROOSEVELT,At Sea (NNS) —The aircraft carrier USSTheodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) commemorated the 103rd anniversary of carrierborne naval aviation with the first arrested landing of the day when a C-2 Greyhound, assigned to the “Rawhides” of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 40, touched down Jan. 18.

On the same day in 1911, Eugene Ely successfully landed a Curtis pusher biplane on a makeshift landing platform aboard the Pacific Fleet’s armored cruiser USS Pennsylvania (ACR 4). It was the first landing on a carrier.

“Eugene Ely landed on a ship for the first time 103 years ago,” said Cmdr.

William M. Schomer,TR’s mini air boss.“We [TR] celebrated that accomplishment by highlighting the first trap of the day.”

The Mare Island Navy Yard constructed the temporary wooden platform over Pennsylvania’s aft deck and gun turret.A series of ropes, with sandbags at each end, were stretched across the temporary deck and held above it by boards laid along its length. Hooks attached to the airplane’s landing gear caught the ropes and the weight of the sandbags was used to bring the plane to a rapid halt. Pennsylvania’s crew constructed awnings on the sides and front of the flight deck to catch the plane and pilot in case the plane failed to stop.

This arrangement paved the way for today’s modern arresting gear and safety barrier system employed on the Navy’s aircraft carriers.

‘MyICP’ gives military spouses new career-planning tool

BY TERRI MOON CRONK American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — Military spouses who need guidance on education and careers have a new online tool at their fingertips, a program analyst for the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program, known as SECO, said in an interview last week.

“My Individual Career Plan,” or MyICP, allows spouses to build a virtual career roadmap based on their specific goals and objectives, Lee McMahon said.

MyICP launched Jan. 10 on Military OneSource’s MySECO website, the primary access point for the Defense Department’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program, McMahon said.

“SECO provides expert career and education guidance to military spouses worldwide,” she explained,“supporting them in four career lifecycle stages: career exploration, education, training and licensing, employment readiness, and career connections.”

The MyICP tool is available for all active-duty Army,

Navy,Air Force and Marine Corps spouses and to National Guard and Reserve spouses as well, McMahon said, noting that it’s also open to spouses for up to 180 days after their service member separates or retires from the military. Spouses must first register at https://myseco.militaryonesource.mil to use it. Surviving spouses of military members who died while on active duty also are eligible.

To illustrate how MyICP works, McMahon used the example of a nursing student military spouse who has just moved to a new duty station and wants to see what opportunities exist in the new area.

Licensing requirements are an issue for nurses, McMahon notes. So once logged on and after clicking on “manage my individual career plan,” the spouse would begin to build a MyICP by selecting “licensed” and “student.”

Next,the spouse would go to the occupation page to find “nursing,” which would generate information from the Labor Department.The spouse would then select topics from the “challenges and growth opportunities” category.

This category may include topics such as child care and relocation or time-management skills.

The self-service wizard then produces a MyICP, McMahon said, which recommends activities to meet a person’s career and education goals based on the selections made.

The Military Spouse Employment Partnership, a component of SECO, is composed of more than 200 companies and organizations that have committed to hiring military spouses, she added, so MyICP also includes the ability for users to see which of MSEP’s partners might have jobs in the user’s occupation, and provides a link to check the company’s openings in the chosen field.

McMahon encouraged all military spouses in search of such opportunities to try the MyICP tool.

“We would love to hear their feedback,” she said, noting that users can submit their input on the MySECO website by clicking on “SECO Satisfaction” or the feedback button.

Military spouses who have additional questions or need more information about using the MyICP tool can call Military OneSource at 1-800-342-9647 and speak to a SECO career counselor.

COMPTUEX, designed to integrate Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8 with Carrier Strike Group 2, marks the end of the work-up cycle for the Blacklions before they deploy.

Previous to COMPTUEX, the Blacklions spent a month on the ship from mid-August through the beginning of September for the Tailored Ships Training Availability in order to perfect cyclic operations and gain landing proficiency. In the middle of September the squadron detached to NAS Fallon, Nev. for Air Wing Fallon. One of the most demanding training evolutions during the past year, CVW-8 aircraft executed large force strikes, close air support missions and combat search and rescue efforts. The four weeks molded the Blacklions into the air wing team in preparation for any mission asked to complete during deployment.

VFA-213 CELEBRATES FRIENDS AND FAMILY DAY Family and friends of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 213 gathered last month for the

Blacklion Friends and Family Day 2013 at the squadron’s hangar. Members of the command were able to show the daily life of a Blacklion Sailor as they prepare for a combat deployment. Events included a cockpit familiarization of the F/A-18F Super Hornet, flightline tour, videos of recent footage of Blacklions at work, a bounce house for kids, as well as a tour through the spaces. Additionally, friends and family could get dressed in flight gear, ask questions about the inner-workings of the Super Hornet, and see the ordnance carried by the strike fighter aircraft.

During the event, Cmdr. Clarke Craine, VFA-213 commanding officer, announced the Blacklion Sailors of the Year. The honor was made more memorable in that family and friends witnessed the leadership and skill of the recognized Sailors.

The Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 83 Family Readiness Group (FRG) began the new year with fresh leadership after conducting turnover at the end of 2013.

Leadership of the organization passed to Jennifer Scharf and Shannon Buckingham, who along with their husbands, are members of the Rampager family.

Scharf and Buckingham set a positive tone in their very first week by delivering individually-packaged, homemade Christmas cookies to each Sailor in the squadron. As many Sailors attested,these cookies were delicious.

The outgoing leaders of the FRG are Amanda-Lee Pitzer and Tracy Frost, who were highly successful during their

time in charge of the group.

Recent activities organized by the two women included the fall festival and children’s Christmas party, both of which were enjoyed by many Rampagers and their families.

Pitzer and Frost were recognized for their hard work at the squadron’s annual Christmas party

by Cmdr. Jesse Hilliker, commanding officer of VFA-83, who thanked them for all of the time and effort they contributed to this volunteer job.

“Amanda-Lee and Tracy did an outstanding job in their tenure as leaders of the FRG, and I look forward to assisting Jen and Shannon as they continue to support our Rampager family,”said Cmdr. Nathan Ballou, executive officer of VFA-83.

Best of the Mess: Competition brings together six Navy galleys — Continued from page 1 on their essay answers.

Each galley had 90 minutes to cook their meal and teams drew for their judging positions. COMSUBLANT began cooking for the judges at 5 p.m. until 6:30,when they rolled their finished meal into a judging room, a scenario which was repeated every 15 minutes until all six teams were done.

Each galley was represented by three culinary specialists, who prepared the meal and presented it to the judges. In addition, the galleys could bring up to three support staff that assisted with set up, clean up and served food to the crowd.“Team Oceana”consisted of CS1 Michael Mahan,CS2 James Onuska and CS3 Derrick Bates.Assistants CS3 Andrew Patrick, CS3 Lily Weske and CSSN Alejandra Rodriguez sported black aprons with“Taste of Oceana”in gold.

Long before the first guest arrived at 6 p.m.,Team Oceana was hard at work.They began at 5 a.m. with some last minute shopping, followed by transporting needed equipment to Founders Inn, where they set up and decorated. With bright sunflowers, red and green tablecloths, a lighted fountain and a variety of fresh fruit and vegetable garnishes covering their tables,Oceana’s team did their best to transport visitors to Tuscany for the evening.

“They can be as creative as they want…they just have to stay within the theme,” said Elliott about the decor.

Oceana’s team incorporated the required ingredients of “pancetta,” an Italian bacon and balsamic into their salad.The main course of chicken and a tomato sauce over bowtie pasta included the required ingredients lentils and pecorino cheese. Dessert included a moist bread pudding, with caramelized peaches and pine nuts, as well as the required fennel, which had been caramelized to a liquid and drizzled over each piece. Oceana also offered fresh strawberries and marshmallows for dipping into a fountain, filled with eight pounds of melted chocolate.The meal was topped off with a small sample of Chianti wine, imported from the Tuscan region.

“We tried to focus on some of the harvest the Tuscan region is famous for. Surprisingly, peaches, obviously pasta, tomatoes, garlic, balsamic,” explained Onuska.

“This is my third competition in the last year. I’m passionate,I love cooking.I assembled a group at NAS Oceana of guys that I have a good rapport with,work well with and they were all eager,” Onuska said.

Teams received $500 to purchase ingredients for the tasting plates, expected to serve 400 people.

Shortly after arriving at 6 p.m., guests began lining up at the tables to sample each dish.The only limit to how many times guests could visit each station was when the food ran out andTeam Oceana kept serving until nearly 9 p.m., just prior to the formal program.

In addition to ticket sales, money was raised from the proceeds of a silent auction that included Disney Hopper passes,a 32-inch flat screenTV,a tablet,CPO-related items, pet gifts, a beautifully-decorated chocolate cake and much more, donated by local businesses. Guests could also take a chance at purchasing the winning ticket for a 50/50 drawing to take home some cash.

CMDCM Gregg Snaza, command master chief for Navy Exchange Service Command, was the master of ceremonies.

“The idea is to pit local Hampton Roads commands against each other,in a fair competition,” explained Snaza.

“The ultimate goal is to showcase the unsung heroes of the deckplate.”

He said local culinary specialists compete hard to be in the competition, with new teams, such as USS Oak Hill’s galley, competing for the first time.

CS2 Cameron Tirabassi and CS2 Eric Moore from USS Oak Hill (LSD 51) prepare their three-course meal for the judges. The Oak Hill team created stuffed mushrooms, chicken breast stuffed with spinach and fresh herbs and fennel ice cream. In addition to earning first place, the Oak Hill team, which included CS1 Cynthia Kruz, also took home the people’s choice award.

While it may have been their first Best of the Mess competition, the culinary team from the amphibious ship demonstrated they knew how to cook for a crowd —and the judges. Emphasizing fresh ingredients throughout their three courses, CS1 Cynthia Kruz, CS2 Cameron Tirabassi and CS2 Eric Moore created stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer, a stuffed chicken breast with spinach and fresh herbs and fennel ice cream.

“We all came together, put our best foot forward and we did what each was good at,” explained Tirabassi.

Apparently the judges and the guests agreed with that strategy.The Oak Hill team walked away with not just first place but also the people’s choice award, making them the team to beat next year. Second place went to Abraham Lincoln and third to COMSUBLANT.
