Command Leadership Forum NAS Oceana will host the Military Saves 2012 Command Leadership Forum Feb. 23. The event is scheduled 9-11 a.m. at the CNATTU Auditorium, Building 223,Tomcat Boulevard.The keynote speaker will be Congressman Scott Rigell,who has been a successful businessman in Hampton Roads for many years. A panel discussion will follow the congressman. Scheduled panelists are Fred Davis, Personal Financial Management, CNIC headquarters; Crystal Forehand, NAS Oceana security manager; CMDCM Bruce Pickinpaugh, Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic command master chief and retired CMDCM Williamson. Each panelist will present an 8 10 minute talk, followed by a question and answer session. NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) — The Naval Safety Center reminds Sailors to remain vigilant as they return to work after a long holiday season when many commands were on reduced work schedules. Time to recharge the batteries is great for Sailors, but it is important to be ready to work now that 2012 is in full swing. Many commands hold safety briefs, dubbed “Back in the Saddle,” in January to reinforce this idea. Derek Nelson, author of the Naval Safety Center’s (NAVSAFECEN) popular Friday Funnies Summary of Mishaps said these

safety briefs are really intended to combat complacency. “The problem with complacency is that it can strike almost anytime and you don’t even realize it,” he said.“It feels comfortable.” Nelson said he reads mishap reports every day to ﬁnd material for his weekly Friday Funnies message, and a large majority of them involve complacency. Fortunately, most of these mishaps are minor, which gives him license to poke fun at them. However, others wind up in his quarterly “Not so Funnies” message, which details

Pray as you can

BY LT. LEO O’BOYLE Training Support Center Hampton Roads Chaplain No doubt we all have experienced the agony and ecstasy of personal prayer. Committing more time to personal prayer is one of my New Year’s resolutions.A spiritual mentor of mine once advocated;“pray as you can, not as you should.” Seeing that we are in the beginning throes of a New Year, I apply the same wisdom to the “shoulds” of resolutions. The words attributed to John Welsey and his brother Charles come to mind:“Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all places you can,At all times you can,To all the people you can,As long as ever you can.” To paraphrase, in the busyness of life don’t“should” on yourself, especially when it comes to praying. When it comes to personal prayer, it is good to remember the words of Christian author Philip Yancey, who points out in his book, titled “Prayer Does It Make Any Difference?” that“Prayer is a privilege not duty.” And most often, the way I experience such a privilege may not be the manner in which I ﬁnd it waiting for me the very next day. As prayer changes us, so too, does our way of praying adjust to our daily lives. In this spirit, may God bless you beyond all the “shoulds” of a New Year in meeting the sacred as best you can through personal prayer.

Enterprise gets underway for final qualifications BY MCC STEPHEN M. WHITE USS Enterprise Public Affairs USS ENTERPRISE,At sea (NNS) — USS Enterprise (CVN 65) departed her homeport of Norfolk, Jan. 11 to participate in a Composite Unit Training Exercise (COMPTUEX) and Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX). The early morning departure was the next to last departure from Naval Station Norfolk for the 50-year-old carrier. Enterprise is scheduled to enter deactivation after completing its 22nd and final deployment later this year. COMPTUEX is the intermediate phase of the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group’s (CSG) Inter-Deployment Training Cycle (IDTC), designed to hone warfare skills throughout the strike group while maintaining unit proficiency. “It’s the final exercise to ensure Enterprise is combat ready,” said Capt. William C. Hamilton Jr, Enterprise commanding officer.“We’re looking forward to working with the full strike group conducting combat exercises across the full spectrum of battle spaces.” COMPTUEX is designed to bring every part of a strike group together to work effectively and efficiently as one cohesive unit. Hamilton says the exercise will require a total team ef-

fort from Enterprise, the embarked air wing and the more than 4,500 Sailors and Marines involved. Every department, division and work center, and every Sailor and Marine aboard Enterprise, from the engineering plants up to the ﬂight deck, will play a vital role in the exercise. The JTFEX will test the ship’s ability, as well as that of its strike group, to operate in a complex, hostile environment with other U.S. and coalition forces. “By the end of COMPTUEX and JTFEX, we will have a combat-ready strike group that will be ready to execute the Navy’s mission anywhere in the world,”said Rear Adm. Walter E. Carter Jr., commander, Enterprise CSG.“Our goal is to ensure we are integrated as a team and to exceed our requirements for our combat operational efﬁciency.” The Enterprise Carrier Strike Group includes USS Enterprise (CVN 65), Carrier Air Wing 1, Destroyer Squadron 2, guided-missile cruiser USS Vicksburg (CG 69), guided-missile destroyers USS Porter (DDG 78), USS James E.Williams (DDG 95) and USS Nitze (DDG 94). New campaign asks â€œWho Will Stand Your Watch?â€? From Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs MILLINGTON,Tenn. (NNS) â€” Navy Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (NADAP) ofďŹ ce has launched a new substance abuse prevention campaign designed to educate Sailors of the negative impact substance abuse can have on a Sailorâ€™s family, shipmates and career, ofďŹ cials said Jan. 4. â€œSubstance abuse puts lives and missions at risk, undercuts unit readiness and morale, it is inconsistent with Navy ethos and its core values of honor, courage and commitment,â€?said Dorice Favorite,Navy Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention director. The campaign titled â€œWho Will Stand Your Watch?â€? focuses on Sailorsâ€™ personal responsibility and the impact of their absence, as a result of a substance abuse incident.The campaign uses various communication tactics to include print media and public service announcements. â€œPreventing substance abuse from occurring rather than dealing with the consequences beneďŹ ts everyone. Prevention

requires responsibility and accountability at all levels.Good leadership and teamwork are the best defense against substance abuse,â€? said Favorite. The campaign features â€œrealâ€? Sailors in the public service announcements, which were ďŹ lmed in their workplace to portray the importance of their job and their presence. After her Bachelorâ€™s Degree in Criminal Justice from Saint Leo University in May 2008, Garcia is currently pursuing her Master of BusinessAdministration online fromTrident University International in Cypress,Calif.Her education goals also include completing her doctorate degree at Trident University International. Garcia has earned her certiďŹ cation through the U.S. Military Apprenticeship Program and the Department of Labor as a computer peripheral equipment operator. She currently serves as the central technical publications librarian leading petty ofďŹ cer. She was recently frocked to ďŹ rst class petty ofďŹ cer in December 2011 and has her sights set on becoming a commissioned ofďŹ cer. Garcia is applying to OfďŹ cer Candidate School (OCS). tendance in August 2009 and reported to Newport, R.I. in November 2009. Unfortunately, due to medical circumstances, she was unable to complete OCS at that time;however,she has never lost focus of her commission. â€œMy ultimate goal is to become a naval ofďŹ cer in a customer service-oriented designator, speciďŹ cally Supply Corps or aviation maintenance duty ofďŹ cer,â€? said Garcia of her career goals. When Garcia joined the Navy in August 2003, her initial intentions were to pay for college but has since decided to make the Navy a career. She joined undesignated and worked as an aviation boatswainâ€™s mate while on board USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75). â€œIt wasnâ€™t for me. I love aviation and customer service,â€?she says of her reasons for later striking AZ. Garcia also serves as the Girl Scout Troop Leader of Troop 207 in Virginia Beach,where she leads Girl Scout Daisies ages 5 and 6. In addition to her military responsibilities and community involvement, Garcia also juggles the job of wife and mother. She has been married for six years to Eduardo Garcia and they have two children, Ayanah, 5, and Josiah, 9 months.

Numerous ﬁrearms mishaps show that the victim accidentally shot him or herself while cleaning a weapon that was assumed to be unloaded. Nelson said complacency also strikes deployed Sailors who fall into what he calls “The Groundhog Day Syndrome” after the movie where Bill Murray’s character is forced to relive the same day over and over again. “When you’re doing the same thing day in and day out, you start to feel like you can do it in your sleep,” he said. “The fact is you can’t.” This truth is borne out by NAVSAFECEN survey teams who regularly visit ships and squadrons to help determine if they comply with various safety requirements. Lt. Christine Davy specializes in surveying how well Sailors complete their Planned Maintenance System (PMS) checks. She said this is an area where complacency can set in, and while Sailors may get away with improper maintenance for awhile, eventually it may lead to dire consequences.

“When you reach for that piece of equipment in an emergency,it needs to operate as advertised,”she said,noting that proper and careful maintenance is the only way to ensure it will. She said she takes a great deal of pride in training Sailors on how to thoroughly perform damage control maintenance, because it makes a real difference in life or death situations. “People’s blood is there to show the importance of maintenance. Ask the guys on the Cole or the Whidbey Island or the Stark,”Davy said,referring to high proﬁle incidents where Sailors had to use damage control equipment to save their shipmates’ lives. NEX rewards students with A-OK Student Reward Program From Navy Exchange Service Command Public Affairs The Navy Exchange wants to help its customers pay for their children’s college education through its A-OK Student Reward Program. Four times per school year, four students will be the recipients of a $5,000, $3,000, $2,000 or $1,000 U.S. savings bond, denominations at maturity. The next drawing will be held at the end of February 2012. Any eligible full-time student that has a B-grade point average equivalent or better, as determined by their school system, may enter the drawing. Eligible students include dependent children of active duty military members, reservists and military retirees enrolled in first through 12th grade. Dependent children without an individual dependent identification card must be accompanied by their sponsor to submit their entry. Each student may enter only once each grading period and must re-enter with each qualifying report card. To enter the drawing, stop by any NEX with a current report card and have a NEX associate verify the minimum grade average. Then fill out an entry card and obtain an A-OK ID, which entitles the student to discount coupons for NEX products and services.
