The event is designed to bring military families together during this time of the year to celebrate and enjoy the holiday season, yet remember those who are currently deployed protecting the freedoms that allow the rest of us to enjoy this event. “We just want to honor our military personnel and their families for the sacrifices they make to protect our way of life,” said Paula Moran, President and CEO, USOHRCV. “Our country expects much of our young men and women in uniform, and they meet the challenge head on. We hope this event brings some joy to our military families, particularly those who

They included: Miss Virginia Outstanding Teen, Andolyn Medina, of Hickory High School and Miss Virginia Outstanding Pre-Teen, Samariah Cordew, from Chesapeake. However, the real star of the show was Santa Claus, who made an appearance to collect Christmas wishes from all the children in attendance.
Also, more than 10 local commands used the event as their children’s Christmas Party. They took advantage of reserved areas that afforded family members time together to exchange gifts and celebrate together, as well as enjoy the bigger celebration throughout the gym. This fun-filled, family-oriented event was free to all service members and their families in Hampton Roads. It is always held the first Saturday in December, so mark your 2013 calendars now for next year’s event!

Children of all ages will be able to track Santa Claus on his annual journey, thanks to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The “NORAD Tracks Santa” website, at www. noradsanta.org, is up and running. The site features a holiday countdown, games and daily activities, video messages from students around the world and more, officials said. It’s also available in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Chinese. Official apps are available in the Windows Store, Apple Store and Google Play so parents and children can count down the days until Santa’s launch on their smartphones and tablets. Tracking opportunities are also offered on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google Plus. Santa followers just need to type “@ noradsanta” into each search engine to get started. Starting at Midnight Mountain Standard Time (MST) on Dec. 24, website visitors can watch Santa make the prepa-
rations for his flight. Then, at 4 a.m. MST, trackers worldwide can speak with a live phone operator to inquire as to Santa’s whereabouts by dialing the toll-free number (877) Hi-NORAD (1-877446-6723), or by sending an email to noradtrackssanta@ outlook.com. NORAD’s “Santa Cams” will also stream videos as Santa makes his way over various locations. The holidays are for giving, but with all the driving around for shopping, parties and family events, you may end up giving more at the gas station due to Grinchlike fuel costs. Holiday jeer can quickly become holiday cheer, though, by simply practicing some gas-saving tips. “There are all sorts of ways to make sure you’re getting the best fuel efficiency out of your car,” said Andrew Briggs, director of product planning for Yokohama Tire Corporation, makers of a variety of truck and car tires. “One of the best – and easiest – is to properly inflate your tires. Tires that are under-inflated by eight pounds per square inch (psi) can reduce vehicle fuel economy by as much as two percent. By keeping the right air pressure, you can begin cutting down on your annual fuel costs.” Briggs said that even though tires are engineering marvels affecting everything from braking distance and accident avoidance, to ride comfort and fuel efficiency, they are easily overlooked – especially when it comes to checking tire pressure. “It’s natural to forget, but for the best gas-saving results, checking your tire pressure should become a monthly routine,” he said. “It only takes five minutes. If you’re not doing it once a month, chances are you’re driving on under-inflated tires and burning money.” Another way to save at the pump is to drive on low rolling resistance tires, which improve fuel efficiency because they generate less internal heat as the tire rolls down the road. “With low rolling resistance tires, less energy is wasted,” Briggs explained. “That’s a big benefit for budget-conscious consumers who want to maximize their mileage. Studies show that driving on low rolling resistance tires alone can save hundreds of dollars over the life of the tire on gas. Briggs said there are many other ways your tires and vehicles can help save money for the holidays, including driving smarter.

‘A COLONIAL CHRISTMAS’ MAKES HISTORICAL HOLIDAYS FUN IN JAMESTOWN, YORKTOWN WILLIAMSBURG
History makes the holidays fun at Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center during “A Colonial Christmas,” Dec. 1 - 31. The month-long event explores 17th and 18th-century holiday traditions with special tours and interpretive programs, and from Dec. 26 through 31, musical entertainment of the period. Songs and sounds of the season will be performed during the week by musicians on fifes and drums, violin, guitar, recorder, and pipe and tabor. The two living-history museums tell the story of our nation’s beginnings throughout the year with extensive gallery exhibits and historical interpretation in re-created outdoor settings – a Powhatan Indian village, 1607 ships and colonial fort at Jamestown Settlement, and Continental Army encampment and 1780s farm at the Yorktown Victory Center. In England, the holiday season – extending from Dec. 25 to Jan. 6 – was a time of merriment and feasting. Little is known about Christmas at Jamestown, but it is likely there were few celebrations other than church services to mark the holiday. On Christmas-themed tours, available at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., from Dec. 1 - 21 with advance reservations, learn about the English colonists’ Christmas at sea in December of 1606, the Powhatan Indian hospitality shown to Capt. John Smith’s trading party in 1608 during a winter storm and the “Lord of Misrule,” an English tradition. Daily orientation tours of the museum’s outdoor livinghistory areas will be offered at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. during “A Colonial Christmas.” Visitors can see wattle-and-daub buildings in the 1610-14 re-created fort decorated with greenery. Fort visitors
can experience riddles and revelry by the Lord of Misrule, “grand captain of all mischief,” at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. daily, and from Dec. 22 - 31, also at 4 p.m. Yorktown Victory Center Hear accounts of Christmas and winter in military encampments during the American Revolution and glimpse holiday preparations on a 1780s farm. Visitors to the Continental Army encampment can learn about winter camp life and hear accounts of Christmas during the war, as well as assist the quartermaster in preparing military supplies, and at 11:05 a.m., 1:05 p.m. and 3:05 p.m. daily, observe artillery demonstrations. At the clapboard farmhouse adorned with greenery, historical interpreters compare and contrast 18th-century holiday traditions with those of modern times and demonstrate a variety of holiday activities, including setting a farmhouse table for a holiday feast. In many cases, when “military families” become a topic to talk about – deployment and long periods of time spent away from their loved ones often accompanies the conversation. The importance for military families to weather the distance and keep their strong bond and love for one another through keepsakes and fond memories becomes an essential part of everyday life. For two U.S. Marine Corps wives, mere memories were not enough for them or their children. Tricia Dyal and Nikki Darnell decided to go beyond the memories through inspirational creativity and brought to life an idea that soon went global. “I am a Marine wife – my business partner is a Marine wife. My husband was on his second deployment and at the time and we had a 2-year-old and a newborn. Not two
weeks after he had deployed, both girls were hospitalized with a bad virus,” said Dyal, speaking on her inspiration for the idea. “My newborn at the time was crying non-stop for her daddy, so we took a picture of my husband and ironed it onto a doll with the help of my Aunt. She was instantly soothed.” Dyal and Darnell started as a small business making dolls for friends and local families. They expanded by establishing “daddydolls.com” and soon were featured in Military Exchanges around the world. “Daddy Dolls” give a child a permanent reminder that their deployed parent is both personable and huggable. Such a simple idea has had such a lasting effect on families worldwide. “When my husband came home from deployment, my daughter was now walking and talking. He came home at about 2 a.m. and the sound of the door opening woke her up,”

Hillegass, public information and community affairs administrator for the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, which oversees askHRgreen.org. “Every little bit you do, from shopping with reusable bags to recycling your Christmas tree, contributes to a healthy Hampton Roads community.” Tips for shopping and gifting ■ Keep reusable shopping bags in your car. You never know when you’ll have to dash away for more eggnog, flour or that last minute gift. ■ Get creative and make your own wrapping paper using fabric, maps, your child’s artwork or reused tissue paper. Use twine to secure fresh sprigs of holly and pinecones for a festive natural look. ■ As a gift alternative, consider making a donation in honor of a loved one. ■ If you give electronic gifts, include rechargeable batteries. If you receive electronic gifts, make sure to properly recycle your old electronics. ■ Shop at your local farmer’s market for fresh, seasonal produce and flavors. For parties ■ Send e-cards and e-vites rather than paper cards. ■ Place a recycling bin next to your trash can where it will be easy for guests to find. ■ Choose reusable plates, cups and utensils when entertaining. This year has been all about layers, in everything from food to fashion. Take your holiday celebration to impressive new heights with a stunning 18-layer cake that guests will go gaga over. 18 Layer Red Velvet Cake Ingredients: White Cake 1 box white cake mix 1 1/4 cups water 1/3 cup vegetable oil 3 eggs Red Velvet Cake 1 box German chocolate cake mix 1 cup water 1/2 cup vegetable oil 3 eggs 2 tablespoons unsweetened baking cocoa 1 bottle (1 ounce) red liquid food color (about 2 tablespoons) Frosting 2 1/2 cups marshmallow creme (from two 7-ounce jars) 1 1/2 cups butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 to 2 tablespoons milk 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar Directions: 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray three (8-inch) round cake pans with cooking spray. Line bottom of each pan with cooking parchment paper. 2. In large bowl, beat White Cake ingredients on low speed for 30 seconds, then on medium speed for two minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Loosely cover and refrigerate.
3. In another large bowl, beat Red Velvet Cake ingredients on low speed for 30 seconds, then on medium speed for two minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. 4. Spread one-half cup red velvet batter in the bottom of each pan. Loosely cover and refrigerate remaining batter. Place all three pans on oven rack positioned in center of oven. Bake about eight minutes, or until cake is set when lightly touched in center. 5. For next cake layer, spread one-half cup white batter evenly over each baked red velvet layer. Bake for eight to 10 minutes, or until cake is set when lightly touched in center. 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5, twice, baking nine to 12 minutes per layer, or until top of cake layer is set when lightly touched in center. 7. Cool 10 minutes. Remove cakes from pans; remove parchment paper from bottoms of cakes. Cool completely, about 30 minutes. 8. Meanwhile, in large bowl, beat marshmallow creme, butter, vanilla and one tablespoon milk with electric mixer on medium speed until blended. Beat in powdered sugar until fluffy. If necessary, beat in more milk, a few drops at a time until spreading consistency. 9. To assemble, stack cake layers, spreading one-half cup frosting between each layer. Spread remaining frosting on side and top of cake.
The Hurrah Players, Virginia’s leading family theatre company, has two Christmas programs for all ages. Starting with “Hurrah for the Holidays,” the Hurrah Players will offer a lively musical review in the style of Radio City Music Hall, with a cast that celebrates all faiths. This is the 21st year for this holiday tradition in Hampton Roads and is presented along with “Happy Hanukkah, My Friend,” a short program celebrating the “Festival of Lights.” Sharon Davidson Cook is the director this year and is very excited about the production. “Performing in Hurrah’s production of ‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ has been a wonderful experience,” she said. “For many years, I have enjoyed playing the play’s mother Grace Bradley, who comes to see this outcast family of children – the Herdmans.” This year, Cook will take on the role of directing the play.

OPERATION JINGLE HELPS SINGLE MILITARY DURING HOLIDAYS NORFOLK
All Hampton Roads area active duty service members are invited to participate in the 20th annual Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) Operation Jingle, sponsored by the Hotel/Motel Associations and Convention and Visitors Bureaus from Norfolk and Virginia Beach. The annual holiday program provides complimentary hotel accommodations to the visiting families of locally stationed service members who are unable to go home for the holidays. Operation Jingle provides a three-night stay in local hotels from Dec. 23 - 26. To qualify,
service members must be stationed and live aboard ships, reside in one of the local barracks, or single Sailor Navy Public/Private Venture (PPV) housing. Commands must verify that the rooms will be used for families traveling to and from the Hampton Roads area to spend the holidays with their service member. Room availability is limited and rooms will be reserved on a first-come first-served basis. To participate, commands must designate a representative as the command’s single point of contact to coordinate the delivery of applications and confirmation information with
the NMCRS. The only charge for the room is a non-refundable reservation fee of $10 per room, per night. The entire reservation fee will be donated to the NMCRS. Reservation fees ensure that all rooms are used. Hotels require 24-hour cancellation in the event rooms cannot be used. Deadline for submissions is Dec. 19. Be wary of holiday decorations – pets often consume them. “The animal raids the Christmas tree, for example, and this can be unhealthy for the pet and very upsetting for the pet owners,” said Corry. “If they consume enough tinsel or other decorations, it can cause a blockage that requires surgery.” 2. Flowers are another common holiday feature that can result in an emergency visit. Poinsettias, Amaryllis and mistletoe are on the list of common holiday plants that can be dangerous and even poisonous to house pets who decide to eat them. 3. Just like people, some pets are better at dealing with house guests than others. If you know your pet has a problem with visitors, work with your veterinarian for solutions. For severe problems, your veterinarian may recommend medications or even boarding the animal. 4. Don’t let your pet climb the Christmas tree. If the tree falls over, your pet could be injured. Consider tying the tree to the ceiling, or a doorframe, using fishing line. 5. Cover Christmas tree water to keep animals from drinking it. The sap from live Christmas trees can make your pet sick. 6. Many people believe that people food makes good treats for their pets, but this isn’t the case. Many common ingredients in a holiday feast – like onions, garlic, chocolate and artificial sweeteners – are poisonous to pets. And dogs that consume an excessive amount of fatty foods, by cleaning a turkey carcass pulled from the trash, for example, can develop a life-threatening condition called pancreatitis. 7. Keep sweets, such as chocolate, out of your pet’s reach – particularly while you’re out. A pet that consumes chocolate while you’re away at work, for example, might be too sick for your veterinarian to save by the time you get home. 8. Unplug decorations while you’re not around. Cats and dogs are often tempted to chew electrical cords. 9. Keep any gift that includes human food out of a pet’s reach. With their sensitive sense of smell, dogs and cats can find those wrapped treats and open them when you’re not around. 10. Candles are a common part of many holiday celebrations. Make sure that you keep lit candles out of a pet’s reach, because the animal could light themselves, or your home, on fire. The advent of the popular 70s video game “Pongâ€? marked the start of a competitive and social nature of playing video games, where kids across the country would gather to compete and crown one person the champion.
