hree Marines made history by becoming the first females to graduate from the School of Infantry East, Camp Geiger, N.C., Nov. 21. The graduating class of Delta Company, Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry East, included Pfc. Julia Carroll, Pfc. Cristina Fuentes Montenegro and Pfc. Katie Gorz, demonstrating women are capable of completing the same infantry training as their male counterparts. Despite the recent policy changes regarding women serv-
ing in combat roles, these three Marines will attend various primary military occupational specialty schools and not serve in an infantry unit. “I wish I was going to an infantry unit with my fellow Marines,” said Carroll. “We’re trained to take care of each other, and I wish I could help take care of them.” The integration of female Marines into SOI-East was a single phase of a research study to evaluate the plausibility of females serving in combat. The policy allows each service until Jan. 1, 2016, to evaluate combat-related job fields and determine which should be open to both male and female service members and which should remain for males only. Although these Marines will
not serve in an infantry unit, they are grateful for the opportunity to attend the training. “I volunteered to attend ITB because it was going to make me a better prepared Marine,” said Fuentes Montenegro. “I feel lucky to be given the opportunity, because there’s a lot of Marines who want to receive the training.” The 59-day course is designed to effectively prepare Marines for combat situations. Over the course of the training they learn various skills including weapons systems, land navigation, scouting, patrolling and more. “It was always training, day in and day out,” said Carroll. “But it’s very valuable, even if SEE HISTORY 7A

In an open field, next to the ocean, Marines and sailors turned a meadow into a fully functional command post capable of commanding thousands of Marines in any situation. However, this command post isn’t a normal field operation, it is a training exercise for leaders. More than 800 Marines and sailors trained in the field this week in order to better prepare the staff noncommissioned officers and officers for any situation that may arise during the command post exercise aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “This exercise is for the officers and staff (staff non-commissioned officers) to execute scenarios to work out standard operation and procedure problems and build their confidence in leading Marines,” said Lt. Planning ahead can help loved ones during unforeseen circumstances Last week, I helped a widow of a retiree, who retired from the Marine Corps in 2011. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer. This year I have had 60 casualty cases with retiree families, with 2-3 being recent young retirees. All of us seem to believe we will have 30-40 years left to enjoy retirement and transition from the military to civilian life, but that’s not always the case. Here is some information for retirees and their family members to consider, which applies no matter how long you have been retired. I hear a lot of widows tell me the retiree said “the Marine Corps will take care of you.” 23 percent of the retirees die, leaving no insurance or Survivor’s Benefit Plan. What a tragedy. I realize the retiree did not get up that morning and just decide they would leave their family destitute and floundering, but that is exactly what happens to many survivors out there. Here is the part that baffles me, as retirees, we have free access to legal, access on retirement to SBP, available insurance, eligibility to file for veteran benefits, but one out of four retirees fails to use this. I encourage all retiree spouses to take an honest and critical
look at what would be available if the retiree died today. You cannot afford to wait and find yourself not only grieving for the loss of your loved one, but worrying about financial survival for you and your family members. I want to provide you some ideas. First, make sure there is a viable and legal will, power of attorney present and in a safe place where you know to get it. Base legal can provide free wills and (POAs) with minimum effort from the retiree. Call 451-1903 for Camp Lejeune Base Legal. The next thing you need is a good check-off list which includes where important documents, funds and assets are located. Call me for this at 451-0287. Have the retiree document their wishes about the donor choice, burial preference, burial site, eulogy and so forth. It’s better to know, than to guess. Be aware, as cruel as it sounds, survivors bear personal responsibility for their financial support following the death of a retiree. The military service and government will not financially fund surviving family members other than paid government insurance, SBP
or Veteran Affairs Dependent Indemnity Compensation from a service related death. As a surviving spouse, you continue to keep the identification card and the benefits thereof, until you remarry. I encourage you not to wait and do this. People tend to procrastinate and death takes them before they make arrangements. Personally, I started making all arrangements this year, by getting a will, POA donor preference, cemetery plots, and provided a check-off list with all assets, documents and insurances, benefits listed and locations named. This comes from observing all the sadness and confusion the surviving family members go through. I encourage all retired spouses to call the Retired Activity Office, come in and let’s get to work and uncomplicate the future. The longer you wait, the more of a chance you are going to fall into that 23 percent of widows with no insurance, SBP, or Veteran Affairs benefits available and struggle to financially survive. Retirees need to remember that death does not relinquish the responsibility to care for your loved ones.

I like to lift the skin of the turkey and rub seasonings (tarragon, sage, poultry) along with dried cranberries on the meat. I then roast as usual. occupational specialties. “We have landing support, heavy equipment operators and motor transport Marines clearing rooms and doing other things that oftentimes they might think they don’t need to know, but that’s not the case,” said 1st Sgt. Joshua A. Peterson, the company first sergeant for T&S Company. “In a deployed environment is not the time to learn to operate their communications gear or anything else.” Aside from room clearing, Marines had to treat and evacuate casualties, set and use a radio, find coordinates on a map and rig a Humvee for a helicopter support team. Each fire team was timed and evaluated at every station. The Marines from the winning fire team received a 72-hour liberty period and meritorious masts. The company commander also awarded the winning fire team leader with a certificate of commendation.
“Exercises like this are very important because when you put Marines in competitive mode and put a little stress on them, they’re going to learn the things they need to, and you’ll see how they perform under stress,” said Peterson. Emphasis was also placed on trusting fellow Marines and the importance of camaraderie and brotherhood in the Marine Corps. “A lot of Marines join for the brotherhood and camaraderie, but don’t really feel it when they just work in a shop and go home at the end of the day,” said Capt. Lee Stuckey, the commanding officer of T&S Company, CLB-2, 2nd MLG. “These Marines are getting to know each other so much better by working together (as a fire team) and having pressure put on them. It’s one great way we can show them we care about them, and at the end we get to reward them.”

TRAINING FROM 1A When Marines are put into action, what most people don’t see is what is happening behind the scenes. The Marines who are leading the attack on a hostile enemy building or building a sand bag wall to help keep water out during a natural disaster are taking orders that are originating from a command post. “These Marines have been put in different type of scenarios, everything from humanitarian relief exercises, special operation’s missions to full combat operations,” said Tomko. “These Marines have to be prepared for anything.” A field exercise of this magnitude requires a lot of work to be put into it. It takes a lot of time and effort to build the area of operations. “Even though the exercise took place over three days, Marines have been setting this place up for about a week,” said Lt. Col. Ladd Shepard, the 2nd Ma-
rine Division training officer. “Nothing is easy, from setting up phone and computer networks, to erecting tents and deploying security force to guard the post, the Marines really worked hard to make this field op successful.” After the set-up of the command post, other challenges present themselves. “The most challenging part of the exercise for me personally was the exercise design,” Shepard said. “I asked myself ‘How do you make an exercise realistic enough to keep that many Marines gainfully employed to meet the division commanding general’s intent?’ So, the training objectives were shared with the II MEF (Marine Expeditionary Force) simulations center and they then worked to develop the products necessary to execute this exercise.” At the completion of the exercise, through all the hard work and all the time Marines put
into making this exercise successful, there was a general consensus among all the leaders of this operation. “All the Marines and sailors involved in this exercise did an outstanding job over the past three days of execution, the preceding seven days of set up and the past two months of planning and preparation,” Shepard said. “I believe the division staff and officers achieved its training objectives, and we are grateful for the support from all the resources that made this a successful training op.” “Every Marine and sailor that was involved in this operation did a superb job,” said Tomko. “After being in the Marine Corps for thirty years, I can say one thing about Marines, Marines don’t change; they work hard and get the job done no matter how large the task is or how hard the objective seems to get.”

Target trout in off season
Prior to this week’s freeze, speckled trout fishing has been holding up in the marshes but with a lot of spikes (juvenile speckled trout) in the mix. The normal late season locations like the feeder creeks along the sound and the rock jetties have produced mostly undersized specks as well. And this is the same for the surf, where traditionally mid-November and Thanksgiving particularly, were the peak of the trout season. In addition, the arrival of large numbers of juvenile trout usually indicate the end of the trout season. We will just have to wait and see. What are the best ways to target trout in the so called off season? This time of year, as hours of daylight dwindle and water temperatures fall, we expect the specks to be heading for their winter homes which are south and west of where they normally are found, that is up into the deep water creeks that hold plenty of food in the winter. Locally, these creeks extend from the Neuse River
creeks at Slocum and Hancock, to the Newport River, the Highway 24 Bogue Sound creeks to Queens Creek, up river in the White Oak River to Stella and over to the deep creeks of the New River. Traditionally, the best baits have been live baits, live shrimp and live mud minnows, corked or uncorked. Live baits on a popping cork are also probably your best bet for trophy fish. More recently, baits like Berkley Gulp! and the MirrOlure suspending baits, like the 17 MR hard plastic baits, have transformed many novice trout fishermen overnight into experts. Gulp! shrimp, shad and swimming mullet baits worked on a cork or on very light jig heads, 1/8th or 1/16th have landed many citation fish over the last several years. Shrimp may be new penny or white, and for the swimming mullet baits I like white and chartreuse. Popping corks, clip on corks, Cajun Thunder with the clanging brass beads and others all work just fine depending on your preference. By the way, please use small circle hooks instead of “J” hooks or treble hooks while live baiting to prevent gut hooking fish to be released. Especially if you “dead stick” your rods, that is leave them in the rod holders, when you see the cork go down and you pick up your rod, the fish will be already hooked and it will be in the corner of the jaw most of the time for an easy catch and release or an easy catch and in the cooler. The 17 MR MirrOlures, which mimic small peanut menhaden, are also great baits. These are so called
suspending baits, but they don’t really suspend, but sink very slowly. I have measured them from time to time and I give the sink rate as 10seconds for 6-feet. The key to using these baits is to work them very slowly. If you fish these baits, after a while you reach the conclusion that almost all the time you get trout strikes during the pause phase and not while the bait is moving, so be patient, be slow while working these baits. This time of year, fish are also susceptible to devastation “cold kills.” In fact, as you may remember, we have had “cold kills” over the last several years, which can kill up to an estimated 75 to 80-percent of their population in a very bad year. They are not infrequent and have a large impact on the natural mortality of the species. Most cold kills occur when water temperatures drop into the low 40s to the 30s over a sustained period and it can be worse if the drop is very sudden, trapping the fish in shallow cold water leaving them unable to take cover in deeper warmer water. Another class of the excellent baits for speckled trout include the multitude of soft plastic shrimp baits fished with or without a cork. They include DOA, Storm, Billy Bay and this year’s hot new fad bait, the Vudu shrimp. These all catch lots of trout from spikes to citation sized fish again fished very slowly. ven after struggling with Dissociative Identity Disorder, Hershel Walker, retired National Football League player and mixed martial artist, proved to the world he could make a difference. Walker visited Marines, sailors and families aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune for an open forum about his struggle with the disorder and his life story aboard base, Monday. His mission was to show his success wasn’t hindered by the problems he dealt with during his life. He made changes after being bullied in middle school. “I started going to the library and my speech got better. Instead of walking around with my head down, I started to have confidence in myself. I quit being sorry for myself, so I started working out,” said Walker. After bettering himself, Walker began to prove to naysayers he was determined to make a difference. “After I started to have confidence, people started to see a change in me,” said Walker. “I was the valedictorian of my class freshman year. Colleges started offering me scholarships, and I didn’t want to go to college. I wanted to be a Marine.” After finishing high school, Walker followed his parents’ advice and attended Georgia State University. After debating his decision, he put his desire to serve the Marine Corps to the side. Shortly after starting his career in the NFL, Walker started to realize there might be something wrong with him. His wife told him he was a different person at times. After putting himself in a situation where he almost hurt someone, Walker realized he had a problem. “I decided I needed help,” said Walker. “My wife and I went to a doctor, and he did everything he could to help me.” Herschel Walker’s visit is a powerful force for helping to reduce the stigma of seeking help for mental illnesses. “Anyone who knows anything about sports can relate to him. Here’s a guy who excelled at everything he tried to do in life - football, baseball, mixed martial arts, business- even bobsledding. Yet he has demons, too. And despite his many successes, he eventually realized he needed help, so he went out and got it. And he’s better off for it. Another important aspect is he has the insight to realize there are
a lot of people out there who, for whatever reason, haven’t sought the help they need. So he’s taken on the mission of helping them get the help they need,” said Navy Capt. David A. Lane, commanding officer Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune. After being diag-

Wounded warriors bring sitting volleyball championship title home ASHLEY TORRES Lifestyles editor
The third annual Joint Service Sitting Volleyball Tournament came to an end Nov. 21, with the Marine Corps team coming out as champions. The All-Marine Sitting Volleyball team consisted of nine men and arrived home Friday from Arlington, Va., with large smiles on their faces and trophy in hand. Families, friends and coaches joined them in congratulations as they stepped out of the van. The team presented a volleyball signed by each player to their coach, Jamie Shanks who has been training them since October. “It was the best therapy here,” Devin Kimball said. Kimball said you could see the happiness on the team at the end of the game. Wives of the players, Samantha Kimball and Amanda Masse, watched the tournament from their own homes. “It was like a football game,” Masse said. The spouses kept in communication through text messaging with each other as the games went on until the last moment. They described it as nerve-wracking and found themselves constantly yelling at the screen. “It was like the super bowl,” Kimball said. Neither one knew the other until the tournament. Not only did it bring the Marines together, but it brought their families together as well. The team worked tirelessly training twice a week since October. Shanks has coached the team for the past nine years. “Most of the team was new this year,”
Shanks said. Shanks was unable to attend the event but was there in spirit. “I was glued to the computer,” Shanks said, as she described watching her team. “They all worked really hard,” Shanks said. They wanted to win. She couldn’t be more proud of her team as they walked away with the winning trophy. The Joint Services Seated Volleyball tournament is coordinated by the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Warrior Care Policy. The tournament takes place in November during Warrior Care Month. The tournament shows how recovering service members are treated, and keeps families informed about programs. The tournament included each branch of service, the Special Operations Command and the Department of Veterans Affairs. The game is played like the traditional sport; the only difference is they have to keep one hip on the ground at all times, and a lowered net. The Marine Corps team won their final game beating Air Force 2-0, with Air Force in second place and the Army in third place.

FOOTBALL FROM 1B “Winning is the most important thing to me,� said Richardson. “We earned this win and moving onto the next round is exciting.� The first quarter started slow, but the Bulldogs came alive during the second quarter with a touchdown from Brady Bodine, wide receiver, and Richardson. “We started off slow, but we played a decent game,� said Darryl Schwartz, Lejeune Bulldogs head coach. “As the playoffs progress, there will be harder teams and it will be harder to win. We just need to keep preparing for those games and push on.� The Bulldogs pressured the Rebels with an aggressive offense, but turnovers limited their scoring during the second quarter.
With the Bulldogs bringing the pressure on defense, the Rebels offense was struggling to score until they caught a break with a 39-yard touchdown pass. That would be the Rebels last touchdown until the fourth quarter. After the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored twice more and held the Rebels to only one more score. With the now top seeded Bulldogs (12-1) headed to the third round against the South Halifax Trojans, the Rebels packed up for the season. “We didn’t completely dominate the game, but we are all happy about the win,� said Schwartz. “We’re looking forward to the next game.�

Festive trees adorned with traditional ornaments, and some not so traditional, were decorated for the 11th annual Festival of Trees hosted at the American Legion buidling in Jacksonville, Saturday. Adorning trees with ornaments, tinsle and ribbon is a yearly tradition for many families, and for some, the decorating doesn’t stop in their home. Local organizations decorated more than 60 live trees during the 11t` annual Festival of Trees at the American Legion building in Jacksonville, N.C., to gain donations for the Onslow County Home, Health and Hospice. The Onslow Caregivers Inc. is currently raising money, and looking to build a hospice house in Onslow County. “People fall through the cracks. We help those families who are in need,” said Jean Cole, the event organizer. Groups, organizations, businesses, schools, churches and other dedicated groups decorated the trees in various themes. A “People Choice Award” was awarded to the winner, Sunday. Along with the award there were door prizes and chances to win exciting, items including a $500 visa gift card. “There are more people than ever,” Cole said, as patrons strolled along viewing the decorated trees. For the silent auction the event received 240 items. Some of the donated silent auction items included, motorcycle items and homemade wreaths. Decorated trees were placed in the auction as well. This year the event provided a new twist with a judged event called,“Wee Little Trees” through the Council for the Arts. Trees were made from feathers, stuffed animals, cloth and more. “The sky is the limit on what they could do,” said Connie Wenner, executive director of the Council for the Arts. There were two categories to be judged consisting of adults and children. Cole made a “Wee Little Tree” to honor the troops for the oliday spirit competition and won the adult holiday award. The winning display consisted of a metal tree with one red ornament hanging n from it, ng inspired from the Charlie Brown holiday. h After the event was over, Marines n volunnes teered to pack everything up. “Our biggest support is the Marines,” a arines,” said Cole. Rolling Thunder, a non-profit organization. Ray Teachout, is a member of this organization where they help find those service members missing in action. Their tree was decorated with ornaments listing names of 45 MIA’s from the Vietnam War. “Sad part is those are just from North Carolina from Vietnam,” Teachout said. They help assist other veterans and provide $4,0005,000 scholarships to dependent children. For one family, the idea of participating in the event seemed natural. Mary Alice Gomez, widow to Joseph Reichler, also known as Randy, along with her daughter and grandson, took part in the holiday event. Randy Reichler is a recognized name in the community. “He was a humble man,” Gomez said to describe her late husband. Reichler had been married to Gomez for 35 years, and Gomez described him as her friend. “We were friends and he never did change,” Gomez said. Cole described him as always wanting to help people, and as a kind, generous, loving person. Cole worked with Reichler for about 10 years. “He and I were very close,” Cole said. “Randy was an awesome person, and I don’t use that word often. He was a life counselor.” The family has donated items in previous years, and last year, the military widows group dedicated a tree to Reichler. “Our family enjoys it every year,” Gomez said. The festival included a little something for everyone. Live entertainment was provided, craft tables for children to enjoy, donated sweets from the community and Santa even made an appearance. Monday was a day just for the children.

‘Captain Phillips’ based on true story; Friends reunite for ‘Best Man Holiday’ Now playing at Camp Lejeune and Midway Park “CAPTAIN PHILLIPS” (PG-13) “Captain Phillips” is a biographical action thriller about a cargo ship captain whose vessel is hijacked. This film follows the terrifying true story that happened in April of 2009, when four ambitious young Somali men hijacked the 17,000 ton cargo ship Maersk Alabama off the Horn of Africa and held it for ransom. When the band of impoverished pirates is forced to alter their plans, they takes the ship’s captain hostage. The result is a dramatic and gripping five-day standoff involving a U.S. destroyer, Navy SEAL snipers, and FBI negotiators. Tom Hanks (“Cloud Atlas,” “Larry Crowne,” “The Terminal,” “Saving Private Ryan”) portrays Richard Phillips of Vermont, the 53year-old captain of the ship. The movie focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Phillips, and the Somali pirate captain, Muse, played by Barkhad Abdi, who takes him hostage. The two are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips unarmed ship. In the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control. The armed Somali pirates who board the ves-
sel are played by Somali immigrants from Minneapolis who have never acted professionally before: that includes Barkhad Abdi as Muse; Faysal Ahmed as Najee; Barkhad Abdirahman as Bilal; and Mahat M. Ali as Elmi. Also appearing are Max Martini (“Pacific Rim”) as SEAL commander; Chris Mulkey (“The Purge”) as John Cronan; Corey Johnson (“The Bourne Legacy”) as Ken Quinn; Michael Chernus (Men in Black 3”) as Shane Murphy; David Warshofsky (“Lincoln”) as Mike Perry; and Catherine Keener (“A Late Quartet”) as Andrea Phillips. Paul Greengrass (“United 93,” ”The Bourne Ultimatum,” “The Bourne Supremacy,” “Green Zone”) directed this film through his distinctive lens. Billy Ray (“Hunger Games”) wrote the screenplay that is adapted from the book, A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea written by Richard Phillips and Stephen Talty. housands of community members came out Saturday for the 58th annual Holiday Parade in Jacksonville, N.C., Saturday. Colorful floats delighted spectators as they were towed from Coastal Carolina Community College to the Brynn Marr shopping center. The 2nd Marine Division band opened the parade with the Marine Corps Hymn, as parade goers stood on the sidelines watching them march down Western Boulevard. Spectator Christy Orr had never attended a parade in Jacksonville. “This is my first year attending the parade. I have lived here for years,” said Orr.
She brought along her co-worker’s daughter, Maddie Roddy who showed her excitement as Santa Clause approached. “This was the biggest one yet,” said Dawn Jensen, head of the parade council. Jensen arrived two years ago to the Chamber of Commerce, her first event was the Holiday Parade. “I went from not having a clue to running the parade this year,” said Jensen. Schools came out with marching bands, color guards and cheerleaders all decked out in their favorite holiday attire. People dressed as presents, trees and more, marched along their floats as the holiday cheer spread. Santa even made an appearance as he rode along the top of a fire truck waving from his sleigh.

Many are familiar with the saying, “dog is man’s best friend,” and for two service members, their passion for helping abused, neglected and abandoned dogs has forged a lifelong partnership. Staff Sgt. Brad Vande Hei, a Marine with Wounded Warrior Battalion-East, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Army Pvt. Sylvia Kasch, a military police officer. The North Carolina National Guard, spend many hours training and rehabilitating shelter dogs. They train the dogs in the basics of obedience, tracking and trailing, trick training, service tasks to make the canines more adoptable. Vande Hei, the founder of Unleashed Dog Training and a certified dog trainer with more than 17 years of experience, has had a lifelong passion for dogs in need. “Since the age of 11, I’ve had a love for training animals,” said Vande Hei. “Seeing the impact my parents had as volunteer dog raisers pushed me to train service dogs for the military community.” Because of their passion for dogs, both service members have taken a personal mission to get as many canines in loving homes. After rescuing a dog used in a fighting ring, Kasch contacted Vande Hei for his experience with animal training, which ultimately led to the partnership between the Marine and soldier. “Years ago, I came across a

pit bull who was used for dogfighting,” said Kasch. “A deploying service member saved the dog. That person never returned from combat, and the dog’s time was coming to a close (at the shelter). I decided to take him in until someone else gave him a home.” She realized she needed an experienced professional to get the dog physically and emotionally stable. “She came to me looking for help,” said Vande Hei. “I helped her with everything she needed free of charge, and we’ve been working together ever since. She’s a hard worker. You can tell this is her passion.” The dog Kasch rescued has since been adopted. Witnessing the journey of the dog’s recovery from abuse to adoption inspired Kasch to help as many dogs as possible, leading to the creation of her rescue group. It also guided her to help Vande Hei with his mission of training dogs from area shelters. With the training provided by these service members, more than 40 canines have been adopted as service dogs by service members in the local community. he holidays are upon us, and for the children of the Dance Theater of Jacksonville. it is their chance to put on the performance of the season. The 4th annual Nutcracker Ballet is scheduled for Dec. 7 at 2 and 7 p.m., and 8 at 3 p.m., at the Northside High School. They began the production four years ago with nothing. “We have been able to buy or make all the costumes for this year, but it is still a work in progress,” said Debbie Baile, dance teacher. For years nothing like the current production existed in the Jacksonville area. “We used to watch videos or just listen to the music,” Baile said.
They would work with children to see if they could recognize what dance belonged with what music. The dance studio used to take the children on field trips to see professional ballets in Raleigh. “We tried to expose them to it anyway we could,” Baile said. The Nutcracker cast will perform in two shows Thursday prior to the main show. The first show is a special preview for Onslow County schools. “It is exciting for the kids, because it gives them the opportunity to perform for their friends,” Baile said. Williams, who is performing in the Nutcracker for his third year, said they have been working on the production since the summer. They practice both in the studio and at home whenever they get the opportunity. “It keeps you on your
toes, literally,” said Williams. Rebecca Chisholm, began dancing at the age of 3. In the production she plays leads such as the sugar plum fairy and the snow queen. They have begun working hard to prepare, with practice two times a week. “I love the spirit of it,” Chisholm said, when asked what she enjoys about performing the Nutcracker Ballet. The Nutcracker ballet is not all about the dancers and teachers though. For one Marine and father, Ben Landin, it is about his daughter, Brelyn. Landin volunteered this year to be a part of the production. “It is all about the interaction with the kids,” Landin said. He loves interacting with the children and it gives him an opportunity to be with his daughter. For more information, call 347-3226.
Members of the local community will join thousands nationwide in honoring veterans through a wreath laying ceremony on Wreath Across America Day, Dec. 14. Wreath Across America Day is an annual event which began in 1992 in Arlington National Cemetery. Since then, the event has spread throughout the country and is now marked annually by a congressional proclamation. Volunteers and veteran’s families are scheduled to lay donated wreaths throughout graves in Coastal Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery to commemorate the veterans. “We want to remember the veterans; a lot of the veterans buried there have no family or their families live far away,” said Pat Walker, the secretary of the Onslow Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation, who organized the local Wreaths Across America event. “We want to let people know they are not forgotten.”
All wreaths are donated by local families and businesses through the Onslow Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation. “It’s more than placing a wreath on a gravestone,” said Amber Caron, the Wreaths Across America spokesperson. “It’s a way for veterans to know that even when the words on a grave are worn down, somebody will take a moment to pause and reflect.” Wreaths Across America Day arrived locally three years ago, when members of the Onslow Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation wanted to honor the veterans on the Vietnam War Memorial’s walls with wreaths. A wreath was placed at the base of each glass pane in the memorial and remaining wreaths were donated to the Coastal Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery. Since then, the foundation has worked to try to bring a wreath to every one of the 3,500 veterans’ graves in the cemetery. Through generous offerings, 500 wreaths were donated last year and the organization hopes to surpass

that this year. “It’s a drop in the bucket,” said Walker. “So far we’re a long way from giving all of them one, but we keep trying.” Several units from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune have sponsored sections of the cemetery, and occasionally families have donated wreaths to graves of veterans buried next to loved ones. Some families visit the graves and place their own wreath, while others are done by volunteers including the Boy Scouts and Young Marines. It’s a civic opportunity for youth, said Walker. “It’s near and dear to me to keep this going for the kids,” said Walker. “I want the youth to know our veterans and service members are very important people.” Many of the volunteers also assist families in carrying the large, ornate wreaths. “It’s a learning experience for them,” Walker added.
