Nutritional Medicine creates fit to fight Airmen

It’s no secret that sometimes Airmen can fall behind on their health. Things can get in the way whether it be sickness, personal issues, or just bad luck.

Luckily the Airmen at Langley Air Force Base have a clinic to turn to in the time of need to get them back on their feet and fit to fight.

The Nutritional Medicine clinic at the Langley Hospital can help with weight management, physical training, high blood pressure, and other issues.

“This is readiness,” said Senior Airman Brandon Sims, 633rd MDSS diet technician. “At any given time, we can deploy. If we are not ready to deploy, we are hurting the mission.”

The team at the nutritional medicine clinic not only plan diets for a person’s specific needs, but they offer classes that teach Airmen how to maintain overall health for what they might be enduring. Some examples are a prenatal nutrition class, heart healthy, and health promotion.

“So suppose someone has diabetes or high blood pressure, we provide diet plans for them,” said Sims. “Every other day we have classes for them as well. We also have one on one appointments with our dieticians if people aren’t understanding what we are teaching them in class.”

According to Sims, the key to staying in top shape is diet. It is one thing to just workout and hope to pass a PT test, but making internal changes is what’ll take a passing PT test to being ready for deployment at any given notice.

The clinic has helped Airmen make life-improving changes. There are instances where an Airman has lost over 30 pounds in four to six weeks.

Sgt. Christopher Betts, a student in the nutritional medicine classes. “After the first class I got wind of the keto diet from him and others attending the class so I made an appointment with nutritional medicine. Between the diet, Maj. Blacks well balanced and organized exercise class and the support and advice I got from him and nutritional medicine I safely lost 33 pounds in two and a half months and passed my PT test scoring higher on every component. The results to the second test would have not been nearly as good without Major Black and nutritional medicine.”

Not only can the clinic turn struggling Airmen into ready to fight Airmen, they also create a more motivated, resilient Airmen due to the sacrifices and drastic changes one would make along their journey.

“Once you have Airmen that exceed their PT test or personal goal after previously struggling, you see a better Airmen,” said Sims. “Once they see that they can achieve that goal, the sky’s the limit for them and they help other Airmen. It’s a cycle. And that’s the key to building a stronger Airman.”

Airmen are able to get a referral from their primary care manager if they feel they need some help with nutrition or fitness. Although an appointment is preferred, the clinic is open to members who walk in and will always be given the help they need according to Sims.

Getting the proper help to be healthy can be tough sometimes, and the clinic understands that.

Social media has become a big part of members’ lives.

Therefore, it’s always a good time to practice good operational security habits. Below are some tips for service members to protect themselves and their family online: • Don’t give criminals a chance to get information. Be careful of posting personal details, photos and videos to social networks.

• It’s highly recommended to set privacy settings so that only “friends” can see specifics. Even after establishing privacy settings, don’t assume information will remain private; there’s no guarantee.

• Always use common sense: For example, don’t inform potential criminals of plans to leave town. It’s a good idea to always operate under the assumption that anything posted online might be stolen by an adversary.

• Social content shared by Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., personnel and families is a major target for those looking to gain access to sensitive information, blackmail or intimidate. While there is a definite benefit to using social media to help with support networks, be wary of posting detailed information about support groups.

Posting unclassified sensitive information could be just as dangerous as posting as posting classified information.

Soldiers visit retirement community, honor veterans

U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to Joint Base Langley-Eustis hosted a Veterans Day event at the Williamsburg Landing Retirement Community to recognize veterans and families, Nov. 11, 2017.

The Soldiers spent the holiday interacting with the community’s residents, hearing about their past endeavors. The ceremony included the presentation of colors, a promotion ceremony for a new Soldier and remarks from guest speaker, retired U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Jack Nicholson.

After a brief history of Veterans Day, Nicholson spoke about the “one percentâ€? of Americans defending the nation, and his time serving America and its allies during his 30 years in the Army. “It’s a privilege to honor those who wear the uniform and signed up to ďŹ ght and give their life, if necessary, to our country,â€? said Nicholson. “Our service members are serving for the best country

because we believe in sacriďŹ cing our lives to help not only keep our citizens free, but our allies safe as well.â€?

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are over 21 million veterans in the U.S. Nicholson said celebrating the courage of those who made the ultimate sacriďŹ ce should be on the minds of every American more than just one day out of the year.

Newly promoted Army Pvt. 1st Class Eugene Lee, Echo Company, 266th Quartermaster Battalion, 23rd Quartermaster Brigade, transportation student, said he felt privileged to be promoted by Nicholson on the holiday. Lee said Nicholson’s words impacted him and reminded him of why he joined. “I was just a civilian until four months ago, and Veterans Day was just a holiday then,â€? said Lee. “Now being a part of the service, I feel it’s the most honorable and necessary day of the year to appreciate the service members who deserve to be appreciated for their sacriďŹ ce to this country.â€?

Langley Thrift Shop, giving back to JBLE

By Airman 1st Class Anthony Nin Leclerec the funds raised to support military New beginnings aren’t always easy or fun, and life in the military can be full of those. A Permanent Change of Station can be quite hectic with all the moving, packing, travelling and unexpected things along the way.

At Langley Air Force Base, the Langley Thrift Shop, which is run by the Langley Officers’ Spouses’ Club, helps the Joint Base Langley-Eustis community by providing low cost items that may have been lost, delivered later than expected or forgotten during a PCS. The funds raised off of the generously priced items also come full-circle as they are reinvested in Airmen and their families.

According to Heather Alvarado, Langley Thrift Shop manager, the purpose of the Langley Thrift Shop is to create funds for educational scholarships and charitable requests through the sale, on a consignment basis, of one’s personal property, and to provide a service to the young service members stationed at JBLE. “I’ve seen how much the local community can be helped with welfare and scholarships,” said Alvarado of

dependent scholarships to an accredited college or university. “To give those scholarships to high school seniors and military spouses is a really great feeling at the end of the year.”

Only persons with valid military, Department of Defense or civilian identification card may place their personal items on consignment with the Langley Thrift Shop. Items consigned or donated may be purchased by any person with legitimate access to the Langley Thrift Shop, whether military or civilian.

“Those interested can call the Langley Thrift Shop and volunteer with Heather,” said Diane Schwab, Langley Thrift Shop volunteer. “We have connections to different volunteer events, so they can come to volunteer for different events.”

The Langley Thrift Shop hours of operation are Tuesday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturdays during Air National Guard Drill Weekends from 9 a.m. to noon. It is located at the Community Commons, 74 Burrell Loop or Building 61. For more information, call 764-7261.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9, 2017 — The Defense Department is pledging to improve the way background investigations are done, according to Garry Reid, DoD’s director for defense intelligence and security.

There is currently an enormous backlog in the investigations, Reid said. Some personnel have been waiting up to nearly two years for a top secret security clearance, he said, explaining the goal for completing a top secret investigation is 80 days.

The delays are impacting readiness, he explained to DoD News.

“Units are deploying without a full complement of cleared intelligence analysts and technical experts,” Reid said.

“Service members competing for positions that require top level clearances are held in check,” he said. “Our research and development programs are not operating at capacity due to shortage of cleared defense industry contractors.”

The long delays in processing clearances result in loss of talented people, particularly those just entering the workforce who have highly desired technical skills but cannot afford to wait a year or more before starting the job, he said.

“We are prepared to take this matter

in hand and aggressively develop better approaches that can deliver quality investigations, at sustainable cost, within acceptable timelines,” he said.

CHANGES IN PROCEDURES The fiscal year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act, Section 951, Enhanced Security Programs for Department of Defense Personnel and Innovation Initiative, directed the defense secretary, to provide the following to the DoD committees: — An implementation plan, by Aug. 1, 2017, for the Defense Security Service, or DSS, to conduct, after Oct. 1, 2017, background investigations for DoD personnel, whose investigations are adjudicated by the DoD Consolidated Adjudications Facility.

— A report, by Aug. 1, 2017, on the number of full-time equivalent employees of the DoD management headquarters that would be required by DSS to carry out the transfer plan.

— A plan, by Oct. 1, 2017, along with the Office of Personnel Management, to transfer government investigative personnel and contracted resources to the DoD from OPM, in proportion to the background and security investigative workload that would be assumed by DoD if the implementation plan were executed. » See BACKGROUND | 12

For the past few weeks, a C-7A Caribou has grabbed most of the Fort Eustis community’s attention as a restoration team returns the aircraft to its former glory—a U.S. Army Golden Knights plane.

The restoration was two-fold—move the aircraft to a more accessible area in the U.S. Army Transportation Museum’s outdoor gallery and refurbish its exterior.

The typically-static display gained a crowd when it took flight again as the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) lifted the aircraft in the air with a crane and moved it to a new concrete pad, Oct. 23Nov. 3, 2017.

“We moved her because not many people would go look at her in her original location, which would get very muddy,” said Claire Samuelson, Transportation Museum director. “We put her in an aggressive stance and lifted her much higher so she can be seen. I think she will bring pride to our

community.”

According to Samuelson, restoring the aircraft not only beautifies it, but also prolongs the its lifespan.

Like Samuelson, retired U.S. Army Col. Tom Meacham, Caribou restoration lead contractor, said preserving Aviation history and military culture is at the forefront of his mind.

“We do about 60 restoration projects a year,” said Meacham. Bringing them back to their glory is important for us to give back to the next generation.

We take each one, review its history and only take selective jobs, because we only do jobs that represent something you wouldn’t normally see.

Samuelson said the task would not be possible without the funding. The U.S. Army Center of Military History provided the funds to build the cement pad and the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command funded the refurbishment of the historic aircraft.

Although the Caribou was used in the Vietnam War, this aircraft spent most of its career as a Golden Knights plane, driving the decision to paint it as such. The only other Caribou on display is in Fort

Rucker, Alabama, where it is instead painted to coincide with Vietnam era missions.

“A lot of people question why we didn’t paint it olive drab, and that’s because it’s career was spent mostly as a Golden Knights plane,” said Samuelson.

“We get some Golden Knights coming to visit the museum to see their plane and as far as I know, in the Army system, this is the only Golden Knights plane on display.”

After the aircraft was moved to its new platform, the restoration team then began corrosion removal and necessary repairs, using corrosion-inhibiting paint to protect the aircraft. The team worked to stay as true to the original design, colors and details as possible.

“With this one being the Golden Knights and myself being an Army veteran, I had a lot of feelings for the project,” said Meacham. “It’s always a really good feeling when the job’s done. You walk away and see a beautiful piece of equipment.”

Samuelson hopes the restoration project will reinforce the community’s desire to support keeping the static aircraft around post in tip-top shape.

Quantico, Va. (AFNS) — Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. David L. Goldfein honored veterans during a keynote speech at Quantico National Cemetery Veterans Day Ceremony in Quantico, Virginia, Nov. 11, 2017.

“Our nation is rich with heritage and tradition, and few surpass that of honoring our veterans, both alive and passed,” said Goldfein. “This is one of our greatest traditions; and, as one of many veterans in my family, I am honored to be here.”

The Veterans Day ceremony at Quantico National Cemetery is an annual event hosted by the Potomac Region Veterans Council. More than 100 veterans and their families attended this year ’s event featuring performances by the Quantico Marine Corps Band and color guard.

“No matter how or when you served,

you are part of a family; and that’s what these kind of ceremonies are all about – family,” said Army (Ret) First Sgt. Julio Santiago. “We come together to honor our brothers and sisters, we come together to honor those who came before us, and we come together to show those who come after us that there is honor in serving this great country.”

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the celebration of Veterans Day honors America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

“We are woven by the good, the bad and the ugly times experienced together. For some it is the uncommon valor, for others it is the quiet peace,” said Goldfein. “Our Veterans have a love for this great nation and the sacred duty of protecting it. These are the most humble men and women who are just doing their job.”

The pending cases are in various stages of completion and the department has already paid OPM’s National Background Investigation System to conduct those investigations.

“The enormity of the backlog is staggering,” Reid told members of Congress last month.

The backlog hurts readiness, erodes warfighting capacity, debilitates development of new capabilities, and wastes taxpayer dollars, he explained to the House Oversight and Government’s Subcommittee on Government Operations.

He said 93,000 DoD cases were waiting in a queue for a top secret investigation, and the prices for the investigations continue to rise at a “staggering rate.”

“In 2015, after promising to provide credit monitoring to 22 million government employees and federal contractors whose personal data was

compromised, OPM retroactively passed on these costs on to its customers — resulting in an additional $132 million bill for DoD,” he said.

DOD TO RESET PROCESS AND PROCEDURES Reid said the situation is “unacceptable and must be remedied through immediate mitigation measures and a long-term reformation of the personnel vetting system.”

He said that is why Congress directed DoD in 2017 to develop plans for assuming control of the background investigations.

In August, the defense secretary approved the plan and notified Congress, the director of national intelligence, the director of OPM, and the director of the Office of Management and Budget of his intent to execute the plan over a threeyear period, according to Reid.

“The DoD plan goes far beyond a transfer of personnel and resources associated with the legacy process at OPM; this will be a full resetting of process and procedures in desperate need of modernization and system reform,” he said.

Pence says America owes vets a debt, promises stronger military

ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY, Va., Nov. 11, 2017 — From the dawn of the Republic, the United States has depended upon its veterans, and it owes them a debt of honor that must be paid, Vice President Mike Pence said today at the annual Veterans Day ceremony here.

He stood in for President Donald J. Trump, who is attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings in Da Nang, Vietnam.

Pence noted that some 50 million Americans have worn the cloth of the United States since 1775, with 20 million of them alive today. “From the hour of our nation’s birth, our best and bravest have stepped forward to defend our freedom,” he said. “And as we speak, a new generation of American veterans is being forged across the wider world.”

The United States owes a debt to veterans, and “it’s a debt we can never

fully repay. But on this Veterans Day we rededicate ourselves to accomplishing just that,” Pence said.

Veterans return from service to the nation to serve their communities, he said.

Pence said the administration has been working hard on delivering the services – especially medical assistance – that veterans need and deserve. “Working with Secretary [David] Shulkin, we’ve made the Department of Veterans Affairs already more efficient, effective, and accountable,” the vice president said.

“Let me be clear: Veterans benefits are not entitlements — they are earned.

Administration has been working hard on delivering services that veterans need and deserve CONTINUED FROM 13 VETERANS CHOICE PROGRAM Pence noted the administration has expanded the Veterans Choice Program by more than $2 billion to give beneficiaries access to real-time, highquality healthcare. “And because not all wounds of war are visible, we’ve improved veterans’ access to urgent mental healthcare services and given them greater access to telemedicine for our veterans,” he said.

The president also signed into law the VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act to ensure veterans receive the highest level of service. “And this president has taken decisive action to end the pattern of neglect and mistreatment at the VA,” Pence said. “We’ve already fired or suspended over 1,500 VA employees for negligent behavior.”

Trump has also signed legislation to expand the post-9/11 GI Bill and eliminate the 15-year limit on benefits for new veterans. “And I’m glad to report, veteran unemployment has already fallen by nearly 40 percent since President Trump was elected,” he said.

“It’s lower today than at any point since the year 2000. And we’re just getting started.”

“Julie Workman, a registered nurse, was also wounded in the First Baptist Church that day,” Pence continued. “But no sooner had the attacker left that she began to treat the wounded. Seeing what lay before her, though, Julie told me she was momentarily overcome, and that’s when “Gunny” stepped in. Despite having five bullet wounds, she told me that Gunny sat up, looked her in the eye and said, ‘You were born for this, keep your wits about you, do your job.’

She said that’s all she needed to hear.

Heroism outlives the uniform. And her actions and his courage undoubtedly saved lives that day. That’s an American veteran.”

Veterans of the future are serving today, and the vice president said the administration has already taken decisive action to make the strongest military in the history of the world, stronger still.

“This President has already signed the largest increase in military spending in nearly a decade, and before this year is out, we’ll enact the largest investment in our national defense since the days of Ronald Reagan,” he said.

“And under President Donald Trump, I’ll make you a promise: We’re going to rebuild our military. We’re going to restore the arsenal of democracy, and we will once again give our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen the resources and training they need to accomplish their mission and come home safe,” Pence said. “That’s our promise to all of you.”

Dressed in a gi with a purple belt, the flight crew chief with the 89th Maintenance Group then takes turns with the ABU-clad Ravens executing a fireman’s carry followed in rapid succession by throwing the opponent to the mat and a groundgrappling technique to wrench hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders and forearms in a direction they were never designed to move.

They repeat the succession of moves, fine-tuning technique, until the desired effect on the opponent is achieved – pain and complete submission.

When Sosa, an instructor and competitor in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, asks his students if they had any questions, a Raven poses a query not directly related to close-quarters hand-to-hand combat.

“What are those things in you ears?”

It gives Sosa a chance to explain another technique that allows him to absorb the strain and pain of competitive combat without the use of a pain medication that may change his operational status to “Duties Not Including Flying” (DNIF)– Battlefield Acupuncture.

“The wear and tear of being a crew chief on the C-40 comes from the long hours crossing over the pond, which is roughly around eight or nine hours sitting in the seat,” said Sosa. “You don’t have a lot of mobility in those seats, so a lot of strain in your lower back.”

“The cargo space is limited. When we carry high-profile passengers, such as the Vice President, they bring a lot of communications gear with them. You’re crouched over in a cargo compartment loading all these heavy Pelican cases. It’s like Tetris, maximizing that space you have a lot of (physical) strain and you tend to pull your back muscles or your quads from doing all that labor working in the cramped cargo compartment.”

Western medicine would often dictate the prescribing of drugs, such as muscle relaxers or opioids, to control such severe back pain.

However, those medications, which can alter mental capacity and judgment, would immediately disqualify Sosa from operational flight status, especially considering the importance of his passengers and cargo.

When Sosa’s work aches were combined with the pain of participating in combat sports, like

wrestling and jiu jitsu, over-thecounter remedies offer little relief.

“I did yoga, Epsom salt baths, tried Bengay, any type of lotion that would help loosen up the muscle aches that I had. There’s nothing that worked,” said Sosa. “I can’t be drugged up while I’m working on Air Force Two, or teaching, because it blurs my vision. Being a mechanic you don’t want to have blurry vision on a mission. So basically, I just stay away from medications.”

Then Sosa discovered Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) through a coworker who often used it for relief from strained joints and back pain while doing Cross-fit workouts.

Battlefield Acupuncture, which was developed

by Dr. Richard Niemtzow, is a specific subset of the traditional acupuncture found in Eastern medicine.

Small, semi-permanent, gold needles are applied to five points in each ear to provide effective and rapid pain management.

According to Piazza, Battlefield Acupuncture works because the majority of the sensory nerve connections from the body culminate in specific areas in the brain, which are in close proximity to the sensory fibers coming from the ears. The entire body, and its organs, has corresponding points mapped on our ears. Inserting a needle in a particular point on the ear will activate the nerves in its corresponding part of the body and alleviate pain.

The procedure has been greeted enthusiastically by the military not only because of its results, but also the ease of application, portability and training in its use.

“BFA, in its elegant simplicity, has been designed so that many people can use it,” said Piazza, who coordinates and performs BFA training across the military.

The technique is standardized, and everybody’s learning the same thing. It’s made a huge difference in the spread of Battlefield Acupuncture across the services.

It only takes about four hours to train an individual.

Approximately half is slideshow instruction, and about half is hands-on, practicing with artificial ears and when circumstances allow, we have live volunteer patients come in so they can get the hands-on skills,” he added.

According to Dr. Stephen Burns, a 27-year Air Force veteran also working at the Air Force Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine Center, the needles can be administered quickly and remain in for days while the patient returns to work with minimal discomfort.

“Generally speaking, we put a needle in and have the first-time patient walk around to make sure there are no side effects,” said Burns. “Even then we can do a complete treatment in less than 10 minutes. If the personnel are really practiced, and the patient’s gotten many treatments, you are able to treat a person in two or three minutes. They (acupuncture treatments) have very profound effects for about 80, 85 percent of patients. They will usually reduce their pain by at least 50 percent. And it may last for a few days or sometimes weeks, sometimes longer.”

In the approximately 10,000 BFA treatments the doctors of the Air Force Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine Center have performed, Piazza estimates that side effects occur in a very small percentage of patients.

“Euphoria is our most common side effect and it occurs around 5 percent of the time. Emotional response,

ear irritation, and wooziness/dizziness occur a little less than 5 percent of the time and nausea, passing out (needle reaction), and worsening symptoms occur less than 2 percent of the time,” said Piazza. “Longer-term problems, such as infection, are extremely rare, much less than 1 percent.”

According to Burns, the effectiveness of BFA is not only the pain relief for patients, but also how it positively impacts manning and readiness.

“Say I have somebody that has migraine headaches and they have to pull guard duty, if I give this guy narcotics, he can’t work, he can’t use his weapon. But if I can put ear needles in him, and he feels like, “I feel great. I can go to work. I’m not drowsy,” then that’s a huge force multiplier,” said Burns.

The needles, which are about one millimeter long with a flat disc on the end, come in a strip of eight in preloaded plastic applicators. The small size enables trained personnel to not only administer BFA treatments in a clinical setting but also in the field, hence the name – Battlefield Acupuncture.

“You can carry enough treatments for five, 10, 15 people in your BDUs,” said Burns. This has sparked interest in BFA within the community of Battlefield Airmen and other special forces, who see the treatment as way to maintain combat effectiveness.

If a team member is injured in combat and drugs to control pain must be administered, it may not only take the casualty out of the fight, but also one or more team members who must monitor and help remove the casualty.

During a training session with special-forces personnel, Burns was asked about just such a scenario.

“Right before the break somebody said, ‘Hey, Doc. Sometimes somebody gets shot and we have to put a tourniquet on him. When you put the tourniquet on him, after about a minute or two, they hurt so badly that somebody has to give that guy narcotics and then you got to watch him and make sure he’s breathing.

Would this work?’”

“So I had them come back after the break with tourniquets,” said Burns. “I said, ‘Let’s try it and see.’

“We put the tourniquets on and after about 30 seconds he says, ‘Yeah. That’s starting to hurt pretty good.’ After about a minute he’s like, ‘I can barely move

my hands. This is killing me. I don’t think I could even grab a weapon’.

“We put in a needle and then the next needle in. I said ‘How do you feel?’ He said, ‘I don’t … That’s different.

Wow.’ He’s starting to move his hands. I said, ‘Okay.

Next needle, next needle.’ About 10 seconds apart, ‘Holy cow.’ He starts laughing and says, ‘Give me a weapon I think I could fire it.’ They showed themselves that, yeah, this could work.”

Despite the treatment’s name, the Air Force Surgeon General considers Battlefield Acupuncture a force readiness asset across all career fields. As such, BFA is a key component in the implementation of an Integrated Medicine approach throughout the force.

“The concept of integrative medicine is a philosophy based in traditional western medicine, but bringing in some techniques that we would consider alternative,” said Maj. Luanne Danes, a biomedical services corps fellow in the Air Force Surgeon General’s office. Her primary mission during her yearlong fellowship is to advance Integrative Medicine and Battlefield Acupuncture in the Air Force.

“The purpose of Battlefield Acupuncture is to provide another avenue for effective pain management.

Something other than pills, like opioids. The benefit is that it’s non-addictive. There are no withdrawal symptoms. It’s very quick, painless, safe and effective.

So, very much a better option instead of opioids. The surgeon general, congress, all of the DOD is trying to reduce our dependence and reliance on opioids,” said Danes.

“Reducing the dependence on narcotics, like Percocet, different opioids, those type of medicines, will absolutely benefit the aircrew fields, because that’s all downtime. If you are injured, and we need to put you on an opioid for pain management, that takes you out of rotation. You’re not going to fly until we get you fixed again, and we get you off of those opioids. With Battlefield Acupuncture, we can utilize the technique instead of the opioids and get you up flying again much more quickly.”

Sosa is living proof of the advantages of BFA to force readiness as he not only stays on the job aboard Air Force Two, but also continues to train the Ravens who provide security for his aircraft in jiu jitsu to complement their already formidable skill set.

“Ravens usually train for outside environments.

Guarding the jet outside, but on Air Force Two, the Ravens are required to be inside and outside, so the jiu jitsu training is focused mostly on indoor, confined environments that will help them subdue a person that’s trying to damage the aircraft or hurt the personnel around them,” said Sosa.

While the close-combat training adds to the capabilities of the young Ravens, Sosa’s use of Battlefield Acupuncture is also teaching them that there is a way to manage pain while remaining mission ready.

“I’ve put my body through a lot; a lot of tournaments and a lot of flight hours sitting in one seat for eight hours,” said Sosa. “I am a huge believer in battlefield acupuncture because it definitely helps me stay in the fight.”

Synthetic training to become prevalent Armywide, says LTG Lundy

WASHINGTON — Operating in a synthetic environment — which for Soldiers means combat training in a computer-generated, realistic-feeling environment — — will increasingly augment live training at home station and combat training centers, said Lt. Gen. Mike Lundy.

Lundy, commander, Combined Arms Center, spoke at the Association of the United States Army Annual Meeting and Exposition last month, where examples of emerging synthetic training were on display at industry booths. Some of the emerging synthetic training ideas were started through Army science and technology funding.

Currently, there are simulators in about 30 locations throughout the Army that are mainly using 1970s technology that cannot adequately replicate today’s weapons and environment, he said.

That will change fairly soon, he predicted, offering several reasons.

Operating in an increasingly complex environment, where the contested domains of land, sea, air, space and cyber converge, will require many training repetitions, some of which cannot be replicated in a live environment, he said, due to high cost or hazardous environments, particularly for aviation.

Also, conditions at home station training cannot replicate those at a Combat Training Center, or CTC, where a maneuver force may be training with full or most of its capabilities.

The only way to get that quality of high repetition training that is scalable from a platoon on up to a brigade or division, he said, is through the synthetic environment.

Besides that, different environments, weather conditions, and day and night conditions can all be replicated using simulation, he added.

Lundy said he expects to see affordable synthetic training in the future to occur at home station within the battalion and even company level. He added that synthetic training will even become prevalent at the brigade, division and corps levels.

Synthetic training isn’t meant to replace live training, he emphasized. However, it will provide the practice required for Soldiers to get good at what they do before they go to the combat training centers, where all of that training will be validated.

OTHER CHANGES COMING Going to synthetic training isn’t the only change on the way, Lundy said.

Doctrine and tactics are beginning to catch up to threats from potential peer and near-peer adversaries.

A couple of years ago, Soldiers were training specifically for the fight in Iraq and Afghanistan, which was predominately counterinsurgency and mission specific.

Then, within the past year or so, the CTCs added combined arms training for the maneuver force, with tactics against near-peer threats in all domains, he said.

In October, the Army released Field Manual 3.0 “Operations,” which details

the tactics the Army will use for the next three to five years, he said.

Those tactics spelled out in 3.0 include lessons learned over the last 16 years of war, as well as dealing with more sophisticated threats from adversaries who will want to deny Americans access to the battlefield through long-range precision fires, unmanned aerial systems and electronic warfare and cyber, he said.

And finally, Lundy said professional military education and leader development is catching up to 3.0 and training at the CTCs. For example, the curriculum will soon include topics like understanding and managing the complex airspace, virtual recruiting and banking by enemy forces, and psychological assessments of the local population, adversaries, U.S. troops and coalition forces, each of which is involved in shaping the fight.

“Maintaining the will of the coalition is just as important as being able to achieve a victory and breaking the will of your enemy,” he said.

The changes in PME, doctrine and tactics like 3.0 are not the final word, Lundy concluded. It will evolve and be re-written over time as gaps and opportunities emerge.

Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA gate) changes

Security Forces personnel will no longer man the Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA Gate). Personnel will still have their credentials checked by guards at the main NASA gate, however, their credentials will not be checked again at the Durand Entry Control Facility.

NASA guards will still man their side of the Durand Entry Control Facility and will only allow CAC holders (no dependent ID cards) to enter NASA property.

Additionally, no commercial vehicles are allowed access to NASA property. The Durand Entry Control Facility hours are from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
