Four women become first female cavalry school graduates

On June 22, four women became the first female graduates of cavalry school at Fort Benning, Georgia. While the occasion is a milestone for continued gender integration in the Army, the cavalry school environment was nothing out of the ordinary for the Soldiers involved, both male and female.

As part of the effort to bring female Soldiers into combat arms career fields, the Army has worked to institute a standard set of entry and graduation qualifications to ensure an equal opportunity for all Soldiers.

Col. John Cushing, commander of the 194th Armored Brigade, reiterates that the male and female cavalry scouts who just graduated met “the same graduation standards that we have established in every previous cycle.” Cushing is in charge of the training that guides these young Americans from basic Soldier to cavalry scout as part of One Station Unit Training, known as OSUT, at Fort Benning, Georgia.

In late February, 80 male and 8 female enlistees entered OSUT at Fort Benning to receive basic training. After successfully completing this first round of training, the Soldiers then moved on to training at the Armor School with the hopes of becoming cavalry scouts. It was the first time in Army history that females entered cavalry scout training.

More than 16 weeks later, 75 Soldiers, including four women, graduated as cavalry scouts.

Cushing said that there was plenty of preparation for the arrival of women at the school, including bringing in female drill instructors 18 months before the arrival of the first female students.

“Bringing on the female drill sergeants taught us a lot about our formation, a lot of good things, and certainly prepared us as we got ready for the females to show up,” Cushing said.

But the training environment and course of instruction were not heavily modified, Cushing said, because lead-

ers determined early on that training would be the same for both sexes.

“The only thing we did is that Army regulation dictates to us that we have to separate them in the barracks,” he said. “So we made those changes. But beyond that, these are the only modifications we made in order to execute what we did.”

“We didn’t change any of the program of instruction,” he said. “We didn’t change any of our end-of-cycle tests, ruck march standards, weapons standards, qualification standards, none of that was changed at all.”

Staff Sgt. Jordan Miller, who has been a drill sergeant at the school for 12 months now, is also an Army pharmacy specialist. She helped push both male and female Soldiers through the OSUT on their way to becoming cavalry scouts, and confirms that the training for women was no different than that for the men.

“They all had one standard to meet,” she said. “And everyone got treated the

same, regardless of gender. The females had to pass the Army physical fitness test, the same as the males. They all had to ruck 12 miles with 68 pounds. They all had to complete obstacles and confidence courses together. So there was no difference.”

One male OSUT Soldier who went through the training said that after he saw female Soldiers perform an exercise that involved pulling a 220 pound dummy to simulate removing an injured Soldier from a combat situation, he gained confidence that the women Soldiers were just as good as the men, saying that he’d trust his life to those women to recover him if needed.

Sgt. 1st Class Alonso Deleon, himself a cavalry scout, has been in the Army for 15 years and has been a drill sergeant at the school for two years.

A cavalry scout, he said, is “basically, the eyes and ears of the commander out on the battlefield. They are responsible to collect information on the enemy, terrain, infrastructure — whatever the commander requests — and report that up, so the commander can make an informed decision as far as the battlefield is concerned.”

To become a cavalry scout, Deleon said, students have to work together during training — and that’s what he saw happen with the students that he helped push towards graduation.

“Both of them combined, both genders,” he said. “They worked together.

They have to, or they wouldn’t be successful in every task that was assigned to them. From my point of view, they had no issues working together at any time.”

Another male OSUT Soldier who graduated from the program said that the men and women Soldiers worked together effectively — motivating each other to succeed, he said, without concern for gender.

The 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron will gain another asset to their mission with a new fuel service station that will be built at Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Construction for the fuel station began early April, 2017 and the project is expected to be completed within 16 months.

The service station will provide gasoline and E-85 diesel fuels for government vehicles, generators and ďŹ&#x201A;ight equipment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our entire mission is fuels, jet fuel and ground products fuel, but by having service stations it frees us up to focus on the ďŹ&#x201A;ight missions,â&#x20AC;? said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Benjamin Moore, 733rd LRS fuel facility manager. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our main mission is getting our fuel to the planes and the service station will allow us to do that more.â&#x20AC;?

In addition to enabling the petroleum oil and lubricant ďŹ&#x201A;ight to transport fuel to the aircraft on the installation, the location of the service station will also cause less trafďŹ c congestion and will be closer to the ďŹ&#x201A;ightline, at the intersection of Holly Street and Beech Avenue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For example, being located by the ďŹ&#x201A;ightline will make it easier for the forklifts from the passenger terminal, they wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to go as far to fuel and wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to drive on the same road as personally owned vehicles,â&#x20AC;? said

According to U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Michael Lance, 733rd LRS NCO in charge of fuels facilities, another improvement that will be made with the service station construction is a change in the type of fuel used. The current diesel fuel used by the POL ďŹ&#x201A;ight is biodiesel fuel. Though environmentally friendly, the biodiesel can damage vehicle engines, so to preserve the Air Forceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assets and the longevity of the GOVs engines, POL will be using E-85 diesel fuel instead.

cern, the new station will have better safety measures regarding spills, environmental damage and will also have an oil well separator which will separate the oil from the water to prevent water contamination.

With the construction underway, the POL ďŹ&#x201A;ight looks forward to the future of assisting the installation and to continually improve their performance. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We hope to continue to bring our customers perfect quality fuels as fast and safely as we can,â&#x20AC;? said Lance. â&#x20AC;&#x153;(With this service station) we want to increase our relationship with our customers and the ďŹ&#x201A;ow rate of the mission.â&#x20AC;?

1st FW keeps Airmen, F-22s covered

While the 1st Fighter Wing is home to more than 1,300 Airmen and an abundance of aircrafts reaching more than 12,000 flying hours each year, their top priority is the safety and well-being of those Airmen.

With the Airmen in mind, during the month of April, 2017, the 1st FW finished construction on 18 canvas-topped sun shelters. These shelters provide the maintainers, crew chiefs and ammunition personal protection against harsh rays from the sun. Also, they provide cover against the elements Virginia may throw their way to include: rain, strong winds, hail, sleet and snow. No matter the weather conditions, the Airmen must continue their work to make sure the mission keeps going.

“We try to find things to benefit the quality of life for our Airmen,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Carrie Schwartz, 94th Aircraft Maintenance Unit assistant officer in charge. “This was an opportunity for us to give them something to maximize and improve their work environment.”

Previously, due to harsh weather conditions, the F-22 Raptor had to be towed into the hangar to conduct maintenance.

Now with the improvement of the sun shelters, the Airmen and equipment are better protected against that weather.

According to Schwartz, not having to tow the air-

craft to the hanger will save an average of 2,900 man-hours annually.

The sun shelters weren’t built solely to improve the work environment for the Airmen, but also to provide needed shade for the F-22s.

Due to their low observational capabilities, it is very important to keep the exterior of the aircraft in the best condition. The sun shelters provide a barrier, protecting the aircraft from corrosion and damage the weather may cause, saving the Air Force money.

The sun shelters also provide better working conditions for Airmen who work on the flightline at night.

Before the sun shelters were built, these individuals had to use a flashlight in order to properly perform their job. With the over-head lights the shelter provides, the Airmen to can do their jobs without concern, maximizing their capabilities to better perform their job, night or day.

“Our sun shelters have lights on the bottom, the mid-section and the top, so now we are able to illuminate the entire aircraft,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Branson Hernandez, 27th Aircraft Maintenance Unit crew chief. “This allows us to more effectively do maintenance at night, at dusk or at dawn.”

From a distance the sun shelters may look like oversized umbrellas, but to the 1st FW Airmen and F-22s on the flightline, they allow the mission to continue running smoothly, saving both time and money.

Lab techs: Vital role in medical readiness

While interaction with bodily fluids is not for the squeamish or light hearted, the individuals who work as medical laboratory technicians are no strangers to handling needles and blood samples at Joint Base Langley-Eustis’ medical facilities.

The lab technicians at the U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley and McDonald Army Health Center play a vital role in the overall readiness and deployability of members across JBLE, as they perform over a million tests annually.

According to U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Carey Morris, 633rd Medical Support Squadron laboratory quality assurance manager, these laboratory technicians use their skills to perform laboratory tests on blood, urine and other bodily fluid samples, providing evidence for medical professionals to determine proper treatment measures are taken for U.S. service members, retirees and dependents.

“Lab techs are sort-of the core of medical treatment,” said Morris. “A lot of diagnoses and treat-

Celebrate safely

Across the U.S., many Americans celebrate the Fourth of July with pool parties, barbecues and fireworks shows. As the festivities draw near, it is important to know how to safely celebrate the holiday.

Military personnel are encouraged to review safety procedures, local and state laws and regulations. To ensure the safety and security of community members, consider the following safety tips provided by the 633rd Air Base Wing Safety Office:

Fireworks safety

- Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

- Do not attempt to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not fully ignited.

- Keep a water source nearby in case of fire-related mishaps.

Grilling safety

- Place grill in well-ventilated area.

- Keep grill away from children and pets.

- Always be in attendance.

A 2013 National Fire Protection Association study found that throughout the U.S., grills were involved in 8,900 home fires, which caused 10 deaths, 160 injuries and $118 million in property damages.

Swimming safety

- Never leave children unattended.

- Know and observe your swimming limitations and capabilities.

- Stay out of water during thunderstorms and severe weather.

- Wear all required protective equipment for the sport you intend to participate in.

According to a 2013 U.S. Air Force Safety Center study, sports were the cause of 2,468 injuries on-duty and 1,628 injuries off-duty, forcing the Air Force to spend $168 million to treat the injuries.

JBLE welcomes new commander

U.S. service members and civilians welcomed their new commander during a change of command ceremony June 22.

U.S. Air Force Col. Sean Tyler assumed command of the unit which provides installation support to more than 18,000 Airmen, Soldiers and civilians across two major command headquarters, 13 operational wings and Army brigades, and more than 20 associate units.

Upon assuming command following the passing of the colors, a time-honored military tradition, Tyler addressed the wing.

“I’m excited to be taking this new position and coming back to Joint Base Langley-Eustis. It’s

great to hear jet noise again,” Tyler said. “I look forward to supporting the JBLE mission, our community and our families as we continue to strive to be the model joint base for the Department of Defense.”

Tyler previously served at Langley in a variety of positions throughout his career, including as a flight commander, executive officer and deputy group commander. Before assuming command, Tyler served as the executive officer to the director at the Defense Logistics Agency at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Scott J. Zobrist, 9th Air Force commander, presided over the ceremony where he welcomed Tyler to his new role.

“Taking the helm of the 633rd

[Air Base Wing] is not for the faint of heart. The Air Force has done us a great service sending Colonel Tyler,” he said. “[Tyler], congratulations on taking command of this outstanding wing of Airmen, Soldiers and civilians. I know you feel honored … and you should.”

The men and women of JBLE also bid farewell to U.S. Air Force Col. Caroline Miller who relinquished command after two years of service.

“To all of the men and women of this great wing: thank you,” she said. “Unequivocally, we have made this wing and installation better.”

Miller will continue her career in Washington D.C. as Secretary of the Air Force legislative liaison officer.

U.S. Air Force Airmen and civilians from the 1st Fighter Wing welcomed their new commander during a change of command ceremony June 23.

U.S. Air Force Col. Jason Hinds assumed command of the wing which is comprised of six squadrons with more than 1,300 members who employ and sustain worldwide rapid deployment of over 40 F-22 Raptor aircraft.

Upon assuming command following the passing of the colors, a time-honored military tradition, Hinds addressed the wing.

“Men and women of the 1st Fighter Wing, 100 years ago our organization grew its roots in a foundation of values we still

hold today,” he said. “I promise I’ll give my all every day and provide the leadership our Airmen deserve. The first wing is ready, will always be ready and will once again be first to the fight.”

Hinds is a command pilot with more than 2,100 flying hours, earned primarily in the F-22 Raptor and F-15C Eagle aircraft.

He also previously served at the wing where he acted as the 27th Fighter Squadron director of operations and the 94th Fighter Squadron commander before departing Joint Base LangleyEustis in 2013.

Before assuming command, Hinds served as vice commander at the 57th Fighter Wing at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.

“Hinds’ flying and leadership experience at all levels makes him the right leader for this wing at a time where it’s continuously engaged around the world,” Zobrist said. “He is a perfect leader to build on the successes of the leaders [who] came before him, and I know he’ll take this wing to the next level. [Colonel Hinds], welcome to 9th Air Force and the 1st Fighter Wing and congratulations on taking

command of this outstanding wing of Airmen before you.”

The Airmen and civilians of the 1st FW also bid farewell to Col. Peter “Coach” Fesler, who relinquished command after two years of service. During the ceremony, Fesler welcomed his successor to the storied wing.

“This is the 1st Fighter Wing,” he said. “They trace their lineage back 100 years, but they don’t rest on their laurels. I can’t wait to see where you take them.”

Next, Fesler gave his parting

thanks to the Airmen and civilians he led during his time at the wing.

“Men and women of the 1st fighter wing: thank you. You never flinched. Not when I challenged you with exercises. Not when faced with continuously shifting schedules. Not even when the jets didn’t cooperate and hurricanes got in our way,” he continued. “The world is an unstable, dangerous place. You have to get [your mission] right.

From everything I’ve seen here, you will.”

Fesler will continue his career at Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as the North American Aerospace Defense Command operations director.

Manpower shortage impacts 633rd Medical Group services

The 633rd Medical Group strives to provide Trusted Care to all they serve, while supporting many deployed and home-station missions. Due to contract vacancies and multiple provider deployments/permanent changes of station during the coming months, it will take longer to receive appointments and have messages returned. In light of these staffing concerns, TRICARE will be temporarily only enrolling Active Duty service members and their family members. This action was taken to ensure patients receive the care they deserve within the established standards. There will be no enrollment changes or action taken to any patients who are already enrolled to the 633rd Medical Group, regardless of category. The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Violence Prevention and Green Dot office launched a new site. This year’s Green Dot training will begin March 13, 2017. 633rd SFS message to Hunt Housing residents

The 633rd Security Forces Squadron asks all Hunt Housing residents to secure their vehicles and homes.

Crime rates are generally higher during the summer months and have begun to increase in Hunt Housing.

Suspects have been targeting unlocked vehicles. The 633rd SFS has increased patrols in the area but needs the assistance of all residents to stop the increase in crime. Residents can help by locking their vehicles and storing all valuable items in their vehicles out of view.

Enlisted Scholarship Award

The Langley Chiefs’ Group and Tuskegee Airmen Tidewater Chapter will begin offering the CMSgt Williams Scholarship program. The $1,000 Scholarship Award is awarded to recognize active duty U.S. Air Force enlisted members, E-1 through E-6 or a high school senior dependent of an active duty Air Force enlisted member, who has participated in or seeks to participate in higher education programs. Air Force Reserve hosts Palace FrontPalace Chase informational sessions

Program is looking for child care providers. They are searching for those interested in a professional, portable career that will allow those to stay at home and run a home-based business.

The program is available for children ages two weeks to 12 years old. Child care providers must be at least 18 years old be able to read and speak English, be in good health, and willing to undergo a background check.

The FCC will provide training and materials to get your business started. Training may include First Aid, CPR, health, safety, developmentally appropriate practices and child guidance. All individuals providing child care in their home for more than 10 hours a week must be licensed.

The Langley small arms firing range, adjacent area and the bullet impact area to the rear of the range are off-limits to all personnel. Transportation Museum change to hours of operation

The United States Army Transportation Museum on Fort Eustis will change its hours of operation. The museums new hours will take effect on the first weekend of June.

The previous hours of Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm will change to Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm
