Unique. Unprecedented. Groundbreaking. These are all descriptions used in recent months for the work Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) is performing on USS La Jolla (SSN 701) since its arrival in February 2015. Effective planning, coordination and teamwork have been paramount for converting this operational fast-attack submarine into a Moored Training Ship (MTS), the first of two next-generation vessels for the Nuclear Power Training Unit in

While in the U.S. 6th Fleet, Kearsarge completed exercise Egemen 2015, a four-day Turkish-led exercise that allowed the U.S. and Turkey to build joint expeditionary capabilities, in order to increase interoperability and enhance security throughout the region.

Bossert said. “Our relationships with the nations in the Gulf are one of cooperation and understanding and it is through that cooperation that our mission will be effective.”
Charleston, South Carolina. NNSY conducts its large share of submarine availabilities, but this is the first that’s required separation of a boat’s hull. With two cuts made and La Jolla now separated into three pieces, three new hull sections will be added and a substantial portion of the existing boat will be scrapped. The first of the three modules has arrived from Electric Boat (EB) on a shuttle barge and was transferred into the drydock. As originally scheduled, this new section will become part of La Jolla later this month.

Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic will hold the annual Retiree Summit and Career Fair at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story’s Rockwell Hall Gym from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Nov. 7. The annual event brings together a full range of guest speakers, vendors, medical representatives and prospective employers to one location to give transitioning service members, military retirees, family members, and surviving spouses the most up to date information on pay, benefits and legislative initiatives. The summit kicks off with remarks from keynote speaker Rep. Scott Rigell (R-VA 2nd District). A town hall style panel discussion will follow providing information on policies and issues affecting retirees. Naval Medical Center Portsmouth will staff a health and information fair, administer free flu shots to eligible beneficiaries and provide dental screenings. Participants can also expect more than 20 employers, colleges and universities supporting the Job and Educational Fair. Representatives from military, federal and community organizations will be on site to provide information about topics of interest to the retiree community to include Defense Finance and Accounting Services and legal assistance.
