As the sun set over the flightline on Sept. 18, Naval Air Station Oceana hosted the annual Prisoners of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) commemoration at the Flame of Hope monument, located on Oceana Boulevard. NAS Oceana Commanding Officer Capt. Kit Chope began by welcoming members of several community organizations who attended with active duty, DoD civilians and family members. Having personally hosted the observance for three years, Chope noted how each year the attendance has increased and “that means a lot to me.” As he acknowledged the sacrifices of those who have not yet returned home and remained unaccounted for,

The guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf (CG 72) returned to its Naval Station Norfolk homeport on Sept. 20 after a six-month deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations. Vella Gulf deployed March 14 to conduct naval operations with allies and regional partners in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe. “I am extremely proud of our accomplishments throughout this deployment. ashore and at sea adhered to the highest standards of excellence,” said Capt. Robert D. Katz, Vella Gulf’s commanding officer. “The crew worked long, hard hours prior to our departure from Norfolk, and I attribute their training, perseverance, and dedication to our successes these past six months.”
