As the sun set over the flightline on Sept. 18, Naval Air Station Oceana hosted the annual Prisoners of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) commemoration at the Flame of Hope monument, located on Oceana Boulevard.

NAS Oceana Commanding Officer Capt. Kit Chope began by welcoming members of several community organizations who attended with active duty, DoD civilians and family members.

Having personally hosted the observance for three years, Chope noted how each year the attendance has increased and “that means a lot to me.”

As he acknowledged the sacrifices of those who have not yet returned home and remained unaccounted for,

USS Vella Gulf Public Affairs

The guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf (CG 72) returned to its Naval Station Norfolk homeport on Sept. 20 after a six-month deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.

Vella Gulf deployed March 14 to conduct naval operations with allies and regional partners in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe.

U.S. NAVY SHIPS DEPART FOR JOINT WARRIOR 14-2

WASHINGTON

The Navy recently announced that women can now be assigned to the Coastal Riverine Force Joint Terminal Attack Controller (CRF JTAC) training and positions.

The 30-day Congressional notification requirement ended Sept. 15, which now opens 21 JTAC positions for the assignment of women.

This decision is part of the Department of Defense’s rescission of the 1994 Direct Ground Combat Definition and Assignment Rule and is one of Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus’s goals to maximize professional opportunities for women.

JTAC is a Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) in the Riverine Squadrons. There are 21 billets available in the CRF. CRF operates in harbors, rivers, bays, across the littorals and ashore. The primary mission of CRF is to conduct maritime security operations across all phases of military operations by defending high value assets, critical maritime infrastructure, ports and harbors both inland and on coastal waterways against enemies, and when commanded conduct offensive combat operations.

Joint Warrior is a semi-annual training exercise conducted off the coast of Scotland. The training, led by the United Kingdom, is designed to provide NATO and allied forces a multi-warfare environment in which to prepare for global operations.

NMCP to participate in Drug Take-Back Day, Sept. 27 PORTSMOUTH

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth’s main pharmacy will participate in “Prescription Drug Take-Back Day” on Saturday, Sept. 27.

Active duty service members, retirees, dependents and staff can drop off expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs at the medical center’s main pharmacy in Portsmouth.

Ridding the home of old medications also prevents drug abuse and theft. Patrons may bring their medications for disposal to the pharmacy’s counseling window, Bldg. 2, 2nd floor, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is free and anonymous; no questions will be asked.

This is the best way to dispose of old and unneeded medications. Past acceptable methods – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – are now considered safety and health hazards.

This will be the sixth time NMCP has participated in Drug Take-Back Day. Unused and expired medicines in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are high, as are accidental poisonings and overdoses. Studies show most abused prescription drugs are obtained from family, friends and the home medicine cabinet.

Fat Albert pilot’s career began on historic day

The military career of Marine Corps pilot Capt. John Hecker began on a fateful day in U.S. history.

“I got a call at 10 a.m. on Sept. 11, and they said, ‘hey, you’re in.’ It was a really great day for me but it was also a very bad day for the country,” explained Hecker, who is one of three pilots for the Blue Angels’ C-130, known as “Fat Albert.”

Hecker was among members of the U.S. Navy’s Flight Demonstration Team who shared their experiences with Hampton Roads media on Sept.

14, prior to the start of the 2012 NAS Oceana Air Show.

But growing up, Hecker had absolutely no desire to join the military. His dad was a West Point graduate and his older brother followed in those West Point footsteps. But determined to “run the other way,” Hecker chose Auburn University. “I tried to run away from my father!” he laughed about his selfdescribed rebellious teen years.

Born in New Orleans, he described life as “travelling everywhere –

Germany, New Mexico, Washington D.C., Alabama,” as part of his father’s 28 years of service.

“This is what we do. We’re serving the country because it’s an honor,” Hecker said about his family’s military service.

Hecker lost his brother, Maj. William Hecker III, who served in the Army artillery for 16 years until his death in Iraq in 2006. “I’m sure he would be proud of what I’m doing,” he said about his brother.

After graduating in 1997 from Auburn, he put his bachelor’s degree in mass communications to good use at a job with TV station CBS42 in Birmingham, Ala. But while at the station, he visited several friends going through flight school and he loved what he saw. So at age 29, Hecker made a life-changing decision and applied to officer candidate school (OCS) to join the Marine Corps.

After OCS and completing The Basic School, Hecker went off to flight training at NAS Pensacola, Fla. and Corpus Christi, Texas. He earned his wings of gold in 2004.

His aviation career started at age 30, and it’s something he wished he had begun at 18. “It’s unbelievable. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done and I had a great job before. The Marine Corps is an even better job and they let me fly and that just topped it off,” he said.

Flying the C-130 and Fat Albert was almost something that didn’t happen.

In flight school, Hecker’s initial choice was jets and he had the grades for jets. But when he selected his aircraft, there was just one jet slot open and one person ahead of him, “so I got the C-130s.” As soon as he got to the fleet, Hecker realized how

good that choice was.

“We have the luxury in a C-130 to do so many things; it’s a workhorse. It carries cargo, it carries people, it refuels jets, it refuels helicopters. We drop people out in hot zones, it’s a very impressive platform,” he said.

After a tour at Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Training Squadron (VMRGT)253 at Cherry Point, N.C. for training in the C-130 Hercules, it was off to Okinawa, Japan for a tour with the “Sumos” of Refueler Transport Squadron (VMGR) 152. Hecker enjoyed his three-year tour in Japan so much that he would like to go back.

His flight instructor tour at Training Squadron 6 at Whiting Field, Fla. set him on the path toward becoming a Blue Angel. Several people he had worked with in Okinawa were now part of the Navy’s Flight Demonstration Team and he got a first-hand look at what being a Blue Angel entailed.”I thought it would be a neat opportunity for me,” he explained about applying.

“Everywhere we go around the country. I get to meet people, who are so welcoming. We have an absolute blast, meeting hundreds and hundreds of people and shaking hands” he said about his first 18 months as part of the team.

“It’s a cross-country tour of America.

It’s not the places that make it really neat but the people,” he said about the show schedule that has them performing in 37 shows this year, including twice in Virginia Beach.

While he considered himself an organized person before joining the Blue Angels, this tour has taught him the importance

of time management. “Our day is full from the moment you wake up until 9 or 10 o’clock at night, you’re continually doing something – whether it’s with the media people or doing something to enhance the mission,” he explained.

“We’ll take this C-130 and push it to its limits, with its maximum speed, something we don’t do in the fleet,” Hecker explained about the crew’s air show performance.

Hecker described a segment of Fat Albert’s typical performance. “We start off from a low transmission. We roll down the runway with as much power on the aircraft as we can and when we hit our rotation speed at 100, 200 knots, I will pop the nose up to about two feet and we’ll get off the ground and we’ll fly along the runway at two to three feet until we reach about 170 knots at about 200 miles an hour. When we reach that moment, I will pull the nose up to 45 degrees.”

Hecker compared that to a commercial airliner in which the nose is only about 15 degrees. He explained the plane next climbs to 1,500 feet in about 2.5 to 3 seconds. The demonstration simulates what the military might do on the ground in a war zone, where the object is to get airborne and away as quickly as possible.

“Children love Fat Albert. It’s so big, it’s easy to see but it’s not quite as loud as the jets. It’s definitely a pleasure to fly.

I love it. It’s fun,” he said.

He expects to hit 2,000 flight hours

by November and will also put on his new rank of major soon. With about a year and a half left on his tour with Blues, Hecker doesn’t know yet what the Marine Corps will have in store for his next tour. “I’m happy to go anywhere,” he said.

Mesa Verde hosts 5K to promote suicide awareness, prevention

Nearly 75 Sailors and Marines aboard amphibious transport dock ship USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) participated in a 5K run in support of suicide awareness and prevention, Sept. 14. September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and commands throughout the Navy are using this month as a launch pad to focus on the Navy’s ongoing suicide prevention efforts.

The event, hosted by the ship’s Coalition of Sailors against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) and its health promotions committee, was geared toward increasing awareness as well as encouraging shipmates to take care of themselves and to take care of each other.

“Suicide is something that should never happen, but it does, and one of the thoughts with prevention is just the basic premise that if we take care of ourselves so we’re good, then we can also help take care of those around us,” said Lt. Matt Pickering, Navy chaplain. “Physical activity, taking care of our bodies, taking care of our physical, mental, emotional, spiritual selves is really important, and that was a big part of it.”

The 5K not only provided the opportunity to encourage physical fitness, but to also reach out to the Sailors to promote the events awareness theme and purpose.

“To be honest, I didn’t even know it was about suicide prevention until I got out there,” said Operations Specialist Seaman (SW) Sonny Guzardo, an event participant.

“When they put it that way, I just thought about a few people back home and I used that as motivation for the run.”

The broad impact of suicide, both in and out of the military, is one of the reasons Pickering was interested in hosting the event. “Whether it’s a shipmate that they’ve had, or it’s been a friend or somebody from growing up, everybody has been touched or affected by suicide in one shape or another,” said Pickering.

Each participants received a free water bottle and the top three finishers received

their choice of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, portable speaker or a G-shock watch.

Pickering said the format of the event, as a competitive race, helped change up the usual training on the topic, making it more interactive and increasing participation.

“When you think about whether it’s an NKO [Navy Knowledge Online], or a classroom setting, or at quarters... if you change the environment, you change the activity that centers around it, it also changes how you process it, how you remember it,” said Pickering.

Cpl. Hunter Proscia, who won first place in the 5K, said he enjoyed running for a good cause and was glad so many people came out to support.

“It was a great experience, I had a lot of fun,” said Proscia. “It’s definitely contagious. You seeing your buddy from your left or your right go out there and do it, and say you know what, he’s going to suffer through the run, I’m going to do it too.”

Proscia, an avid runner and former cross country participant, said a few people came up to him after the event to ask for tips and advice for running. He said he looks at events as these as a way to help others around him, to provide support by getting a friend excited about working out or feeling like they can do more.

Along with building camaraderie between the Sailors and Marines on board Mesa Verde, Pickering said he hopes the event highlighted the concept of “we’re all in this together.”

“I think a lot of it is really simple, if we just get outside of our shell or our box and just look out to the person who’s to our left and our right,” said Pickering, “at the end of the day everybody is going through the same stuff on a deployment. So if we can all just help each other out and push each other a bit, we’ll all get through it together.”

In conjunction with Suicide Prevention Month, Mesa Verde also hosted trainings on topics including building resilience, navigating stress, encouraging bystander intervention to A-C-T (Ask, Care, Treat), as well as an ice cream social where resources and facts were displayed for the crew.

Over 100 Department of the Navy attendees, including suicide prevention coordinators, chaplains, first-responders and behavioral health providers, dialed-in for the training that focused on enhancing participant knowledge of evidenced-based suicide prevention tools.

Participants found the webinar content extremely useful.

According to Senior Chief Aviation Electronics Technician Roland Keith, the webinar was very informative.

“The training was an eyeopening overview of the impact that suicidal behavior has on the individual and those around them, driving home the need for an effective prevention strategy,” said Keith, senior enlisted

leader for the Navy Operational Support Center, Shreveport, Louisiana.

The Veteran’s Administration Safety Plan and the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale were identified as tools and best-practices to be used by clinicians and non-clinicians in a variety of settings to enhance Navy suicide prevention efforts.

According to Long, suicide prevention is what is done to reduce the factors that increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors and increasing and promoting the factors that protect a person from suicidal thoughts or behaviors.

“We want to promote a multilevel public health approach to suicide prevention that encourages help seeking behavior and promotes a stigma free environment,” said Long.

Navy showcases warfighting capabilities at International Seapower Symposium Carrier Strike Group 10 Public Affairs NEWPORT, R.I.

Four U.S. Navy vessels, including the Navy’s second joint high-speed vessel, are participating in the 21st International Seapower Symposium (ISS-21), Sept. 16 -19, at the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) in Newport, R.I. The ships, including USS Arlington (LPD 24) embarked with Marines assigned to II Marine Expeditionary Force (II MEF); USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109); USS Hartford (SSN 768); and USNS Choctaw County (JHSV 2), are hosting events and tours on board in support of the symposium.

The International Seapower Symposium is a biennial event hosted by the chief of

Naval Operations and was first held in 1969. ISS is the oldest and largest international maritime forum in the world, bringing together heads of navies to enhance maritime security and collaborative operations.

This year’s symposium focuses on “Global Solutions to Common Maritime Challenges.” Each ship involved in ISS-21 represents the multitude of unique capabilities and sea power the Navy provides to enhance maritime security and collaborative operations alongside partner nations. ISS-21 provides a forum for more than 170 senior international leaders to discuss and present solutions to challenges, such as the maritime implications of climate change, that participating nations share within the maritime environment.

“The ships supporting this year’s ISS give naval leaders across the globe an up-close and personal look at the ships’ capabilities and how we can employ them in helping solve common challenges throughout the maritime domain,” said Rear Adm. Bruce Lindsey, Commander, Carrier Strike Group 10. “Sharing knowledge and capabilities between partner nations in a collaborative manner enhances mutual cooperation as we develop solutions to the maritime challenges that we all face.”

CVN 77 receives the 2014 Association of Old Crows Award

Aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (GHWB) (CVN 77) was awarded the 2014 Association of Old Crows (AOC) Award for outstanding performance from January to December 2013 by the ship’s electronic warfare team, announced by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, Sept. 13.

“The teamwork, professionalism and innovation displayed by the CVN 77 electronic warfare team upheld the highest traditions of the Association of Old Crows and the Naval service, and is most deserving of the recognition afforded by this prestigious unit award,” said Mabus.

The AOC is a non-profit organization that promotes all aspects of electronic warfare within the Department of Defense. This year’s award is presented to the GHWB Electronic Warfare team for outstanding performance with the fourth version of the AN/ SLQ-32 Electronic Warfare (EW) system. The anti-ship missile defense system, first introduced in the late 1970s, performs the mission of early detection, signal analysis, threat warning and protection from anti-ship missiles.

“The GHWB Electronic Warfare module put in over 150 man-hours installing and op-testing the Electronic Surveillance Enhancements (ESE) unit with our legacy AN/SLQ-32 version 4,” said Lt. Ty Waller, George H.W. Bush electronic warfare officer and information warfare officer. “Upon completion, we conducted several tests to see how well the ESE upgrades identifies and operates in different environments.”

The electronic warfare division conducted the first successful SLQ-32A version 4 electronic surveillance enhancement test at sea, paving the way for future Nimitz class carrier installations.

The enhancement will allow carrier fleets the ability to

detect more sophisticated threats, enhanced identification and ambiguity reduction, improved time difference of arrival, frequency and bearing resolution and improved system response time in dense anti-ship missile defense environments.

“I am extremely proud of all the cryptologic technicians here,” said Waller. “Few people know and understand what happens behind the doors of our spaces, but I’m thrilled that our achievements are being recognized.”

CVN 77’s team was also chosen to conduct Project Gelbray, the first at-sea evaluation utilizing on board electronic attacks in conjunction with an active decoy in an anti-ship cruise missile environment. CVN 77 field tested its own force monitoring equipment in support of military deception operations during composite training unit exercise/fleet battle experiment.

The team was able to counter adversarial detection by determining sources of all exploitable friendly emissions and maintain emission control for an extended period.

I am so proud of my Sailors who earned this award. The best part about all this is we all won this award. With all of the tests and research that we did there was no one person that stood out. We all had a part in this award and that’s what makes it special to me.”

GHWB Carrier Strike Group deployed Feb. 15, and is operating in the 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

NAS Oceana Air Show brings record crowds

Returning to the skies after a two- year absence, the 2014 Naval Air Station Oceana brought out record crowds, as it showcased the best of military and civilian performers, while spotlighting a program which assists wounded warriors and their families.

“The show’s success is a salute to every man and woman that helped plan and execute this from the skipper on down to the brand new E-1. Every one of them performed flawlessly. Everything that we did worked,” said NAS Oceana Air Show Director Richard “Corky” Erie.

Kit Chope agreed with Erie, saying, “The Sailors, Marines, civilians, at every department, at every tenant command came together to put this air show together. We have a great team. I’m humbled at the thousands of folks who put this together.”

About the theme This year’s Oceana Air Show partnered with the Navy Wounded Warrior-Safe Harbor program to bring attention to injured and seriously ill Sailors and Coast Guardsmen and the challenges they face. Navy Wounded Warrior – Safe Harbor is an outreach program which provides nonmedical assistance and support to both the military members and their families.

“There are many Wounded Warriors, folks in need who don’t know where to turn,” Chope said. By partnering with the program, “we’ve helped folks who we will never meet. They may not know where they

got the information but what’s important is that they did get the information about Navy Wounded Warrior. We’ve made a difference in people’s lives.”

“The show is about outreach. It’s about showing the public what we do. It’s about showing young men and women about what the Navy has to offer. It’s about showing the public a good show,” said Erie.

The centerpiece of this year’s air show was the tandem jump by three Wounded Warriors with the team from Skydive Suffolk. Marines Cpl. Tyler Southern and Sgt. Shawn Lopez, and Navy Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class (FMF) Jeremiah Harrold jumped during both Friday and Sunday’s shows. All three are now medically retired because of their severe injuries.

Fox News Channel correspondent Molly Henneberg was also a part of Sunday’s tandem jump, providing national exposure for the Navy’s Wounded Warrior-Safe Harbor program and the Oceana Air Show. Henneberg planned to be part of Saturday’s Wounded Warrior Jump but when low cloud cover prevented the event, she remained at the show without her filming crew to take part in Sunday’s skydive.

The show kicked off on Friday with a daylong practice show for DoD ID card holders and invited guests, including members of the Navy Wounded Warrior-Safe Harbor Program, as well as those enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP).

The two groups were hosted in a tent on the flightline with children’s activities, food and more, while they enjoyed the chance to watch the entire show in a less-crowded atmosphere.

Among the invited guests was Operations Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Franklin Grimes, whose wife Amy and daughter Abi-

gail, 8, are both enrolled in EFMP. “This is a great program that a lot of families don’t know about…This really helps me out,” said Grimes, who is stationed at U.S. Fleet Forces Command.

“This is really awesome,” said Amy as she held their 8-week-old son Austin. The Grimes also brought Amy’s parents, David and Judy Harris, from Charlottesville, Va., who were also impressed with the special event for the family members.

“This is a lot of fun. It’s very, very entertaining,” said David Harris.

High flying performances The Geico Skytypers also brought attention to the Navy’s program by using their aerial writing ability to skyptype “Wounded Warriors” high in the sky, visible throughout the City of Virginia Beach.

The Skytypers are regular performers at Oceana. “We’ve been blessed to be invited quite a few times. This is like a second home for us,” said Skytypers’ pilot Steven Kapur.

It was a sentiment Larry Arken, Skytypers owner and flight lead, shared. “It’s our home away from home. It’s the first show we flew at when we got the Geico sponsorship.

It’s like a family here. It’s a great place. The people are terrific here. Virginia is a great state. We just enjoy coming back here all the time,” said Arken.

The team is based at Republic Airport in Long Island, N.Y., flying the North American SNJ-2s, built in 1940 and 1941. Pilots are a mixture of civilian and former military aviators.

The Geico Skytypers provided media rides, as well as including both Chope and Oceana Command Master Chief Eric Clark on their

Saturday and Sunday flights.

“It opens the door into our world and lets them see what flying in a World War II fighter trainer is like. It’s a little taste of history,” explained Arken, who took over the Skytypers from his dad 20 years ago.

The NAS Oceana Air Show wouldn’t be complete without the Navy’s Flight Demonstration Team, the Blue Angels. Virginia Beach residents and visitors lined the roadways around Oceana beginning with the Blue Angels’ Wednesday arrival for a chance to see the legendary diamond formation. Saturday’s rain held off long enough for the Blue Angels to get off the ground, although low clouds forced an abbreviated version of their performance.

Despite the rain, Saturday’s crowd remained at the show, including David Van Daalen and his grandson Addison Thornburg, who traveled from Alexandria, Va. to see the Blue Angels fly. Thornburg, 5, sat on his grandfather’s shoulders throughout much of the air show. Dressed in a green flight suit, the little boy said he loved planes, as Van Daalen said, “We wouldn’t miss the show.”

The air show director said performers such as the Blue Angels in the show’s lineup contribute to Oceana’s success, because “It gives the crowd a great appreciation for the different spectrum of aviation – whether it’s a glider, or an old Cessna or microjet. The crowd remains very interested.”

In Batumi, Georgia, the ship hosted distinguished guests Prime Minister of the Republic of Georgia, Irakli Gharibashvili, Georgian Minister of Defense, Iraklii Alasania, and U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, Richard Norland.

She conducted 15 port visits to 9 different countries, to include Scotland, Italy, Cyprus, Israel, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Turkey, and Georgia. These visits served the purpose of enhancing relations with each of these countries while affording the crew the opportunity to explore their culture and history.

“I am very proud of the crew’s performance during this deployment,” said Vella Gulf’s Command Master Chief, Scott Nagle. “Their pride and professionalism, teamwork, and professional accomplishments are all noteworthy. They represented the Navy and the United States well, both on and off duty.”

Nation has not forgotten the 83,000 missing troops Continued from front The third Friday in September has been designated as the annual National POW/MIA Recognition Day, day for everyone to reflect on the sacrifices made and to honor POW/ MIAs. “But for some, every day is POW/MIA Recognition Day,” noted Chope.

Because the NAS Oceana Air Show began on Sept. 19 with the practice show for DoD ID card holders and invited guests, the observance was held the evening before to allow for maximum participation by the active duty and civilians on base.

“We Americans in uniform today are inspired by the fierce resolve of generation of American prisoners of war. We also draw inspiration from their bonds of compassion, camaraderie and love that prompted our POWs to care for each other and sustain each other through terrible, terrible months and years of hardships. Those bonds are fundamental to the strength of the American military. They are fundamental to the strength of the American character. We protect each other and we vow to never leave a fellow service member behind,” said Chope adding that we should be proud our nation has not forgotten the more than 83,000 service members unaccounted for.

While the number of service members being held as POWs or MIA is smaller in today’s conflicts than past generations, “these young men and women face the same perils. They know what they fight for and they need to continue to know that they have our unwavering support.”

Chope acknowledged how many veterans in the audience were not warmly welcomed home when the returned to the U.S. from past conflicts. “That was shameful. You deserved better…We cannot forget and we will not forget,” he said.

Chope was joined by Commander, Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic Capt. Mark Weisgerber in placing a wreath at the base of the monument, followed by members of the VFW Post 392 in Virginia Beach, Patriot Guard Riders and Military Order of the Cooties, each laying a wreath on behalf of their respective organizations. Colleen Lewis from VFW Post 392 read the names of Virginians who are still unaccounted for from the Korean Conflict, Vietnam War and the Cold War. The evening concluded with “Taps” played by two Navy musicians and the Patriot Guard Riders who presented colors.

The Patriot Guard Riders, which brought 22 members to the ceremony, is probably best known for shielding families from protestors during a military funeral and continue to show their respect to fallen heroes, their families and the community.

“We’re all veterans. We need to show respect to our brothers and comrades who have been held as prisoners of war or are missing. We can’t ever forget them and we need to know what’s happened to them,” said Steven C. Williams, commander of VFW’s Gen. MacArthur Memorial Post 392.

“It’s our way of saying we appreciate you’ve fought for our country to the POWs and for the MIAs, we’re hanging in there with you.”

The George Washington and Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Groups, as well as land-based aircraft from Marine Corps Air Group 12 and Air Force 36th Operations Group completed dynamic war-at-sea exercises (WASEX) as part of Valiant Shield, Sept. 16 and 18.

These WASEXs utilized joint assets to simulate long range strikes against hostile surface warships in order to improve joint interoperability, to assess dual carrier strike group and joint operations and to conduct maritime threat neutralization.

“WASEXs are conducted by naval assets around the world and in their most basic form they are the execution of, in this case, an air-launched attack against simulated adversary surface ships played by U.S. surface combatants,” said Rear. We talked about everything.

We talked out our differences. We kept in mind that we loved each other, even through our fights and disagreements.” They have been married 20 years now.

“The “D Word” is not allowed and is never used as a threat” wrote Liz Whirley now married eight years. She and her husband found that you have to work together, compromise, share open communication, practice honesty, and support each other with individual goals and family goals.

Military couples are always going to fight.

Just like civilian couples, the more stressed out we get the more likely we are to fight. But having a rule against some of the more damaging behaviors – like throwing around the D word – helps keep things fair.

STAYING Never use the ‘D’ word MARRIED

Being married is not the goal for the young military spouses we see at our live Spouse X events. Staying married – happily married – is one of their many life goals. And we see them looking for ideas all the time.

A participant at our recent Military.com Spouse Experience event in San Diego stopped me because she wanted to take a picture of one of the Top 10 lists our audience put together.

She sorted through the papers until she found one titled, “Tips for New Wives.”

I couldn’t figure out what she was looking for. That list had a lot of the things she probably already knew: Go to spouse classes at every duty station. Use your money wisely.

Find something that is your thing. Don’t play the blame game.

“I want to take a picture of the list that says, “Don’t use the D word,” the young woman told the table.

“The D word?” I said. “Does she mean DE-P-L-O-Y-M-E-N-T?” “No, the D word. As in D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” said another woman at the table.

Turns out that when they were fighting, the young woman and her husband used the D word all the time. As in, “We might as well get divorced!” And, why don’t you just

divorce me then!”

That is clearly one of the things you just can’t do in a military marriage. You can’t throw around the D word.

Because the D word isn’t played lightly (even if you think it is). The D word is a challenge. The D word is a slap. The D word is a weapon.

Our Facebook audience agreed. Whether they had been married a couple of years or a couple of decades, many of them told us that they had a rule that neither partner could play the D word.

Sherie and Josh Tucker took out the D word early. “We married for better or for worse and sometimes the worse comes first,” wrote Sherie. “Whenever things get hard we remember our vows they are words to live by.”

Project Sanctuary aids military families

WASHINGTON

A national nonprofit organization assists military families in making the transition from “battle-ready to family-ready.”

Project Sanctuary, founded in 2007, continues its deliberate efforts that to date have provided help to over 450 families here, and in 44 of the 50 states.

Jason Strickland, chief development officer for Project Sanctuary, discussed the nonprofit’s mission and how it is uniquely qualified to help troops and their families.

Retreat-based recreation “We are a national nonprofit,” he said. “We are based in Colorado, because this is where we want to bring most of our families for retreat locations because of the recreational activities that it offers and the relationship that we have with the YMCA of the Rockies which houses most of our retreats.”

“We’ve served families from 44 different states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico,” Strickland said. “So we’re looking for families from six other states to round that out here in the next year or so.”

Strickland explained Project Sanctuary’s origin and how its mission came about.

Stressors on families “In 2007, Heather Ehle, who is our founder and CEO, saw what was happening with military families based on the conflicts that we were a part of in Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said.

“And really this is preceded by some things that she observed [as a registered nurse] in the Gulf War – Desert Storm – when that kind of kicked off,” Strickland said.

According to Strickland, Ehle saw how rates of child neglect and abuse, and marital dissatisfaction increased, which inspired her to seek a specific way to help.

“She decided to form Project Sanctuary as a respite for the military families,” he said. “And to help them heal and recover from some of the things she was … observing.

“We help military families through a twoyear program that begins with a six-day, outdoor therapeutic retreat,” Strickland continued.

“We bring most of the families to Colorado and locations in Utah, Texas, and we’ll be in California next year.”

The families are taken to secluded, safe retreat locations where they can enjoy therapeutic activities together, Strickland said.

Battle-ready to family-ready “What we’re doing is we’re taking military families from battle-ready to family-ready,” he said. “That’s our mantra – ‘from battle-ready to family-ready.’”

The therapeutic activities are designed “to reconnect to the family and focus inward,” Strickland said. Throughout the course of a typical retreat, he added, families can snowmobile over the Continental Divide, hike in Rocky Mountain National Park, and do whitewater rafting in the summer.

Strickland said the activities include classes that “help facilitate some healing,” such as healthy marriage project classes focusing on pre-marital counseling and marriage therapy.

Managing finances “We also have a financial preparedness class so they can discuss financial issues, because that’s the cause of a lot of divorces in families and marital dissatisfaction,” he said.

“We have licensed therapists throughout the retreat – we usually have two on hand – they’re there the whole time,” Strickland said. “That’s where a lot of the healing takes place when families just kind of want to start talking about issues.”

According to Strickland, Project Sanctuary has helped 1,652 individuals in 464 families over the past seven years.

“We do allow families to come back for a couples-only type of retreat,” he said. “But that is only once a year that we offer anything like that, and that’s just for the couples, not for the family.”

Proven track record Strickland noted Project Sanctuary is preparing to celebrate its seven-year anniversary later this month and has now conducted 56 retreats.

“There are usually about 10 families per retreat – that’s what we usually like to average,” he said. “That’s kind of our sweet spot.”

But the program is considering to expanding to 12 families per retreat, Strickland said, for crisis referrals such as when a first sergeant, sergeant major, commander, a Veterans Affairs counselor or chaplain recommends getting a family into a retreat immediately.

For families from all services Project Sanctuary has assisted families from all of the military services, he said, whether they are active duty, National Guardsmen, Reservists, veterans and even Gold Star wives.

“We even go back as far as Vietnam veterans [who] have come through our program.

We currently have a large waiting list because our program has been so effective,” Strickland said.

“In fact,” he added, “what we’ve found, and research has confirmed, we serve families who are dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder … and research suggests that it takes upwards of six years for a service member or a family to really identify that they’re suffering from PTSD.” Strickland said those families may think they are just in a “rut” for a few months which turns into a few years and things don’t improve.

“It takes a long time,” he said. “So we feel, at Project Sanctuary, that we have not even seen the peak of families who need this kind of therapeutic healing.”

Partner organizations In addition to the resources Project Sanctuary brings, it also has a variety of nonprofit and for-profit organizations who work in partnership with them.

“The USO is a strong partner with us – a grantor – in supporting our programs, because they see the value of how we’re helping,” Strickland said. “They give a sizeable portion of funding to us. They even send out volunteers [as frequently] as they can. So the USO is a huge sponsor, and we’re proud to be associated with them.”

An example of a for-profit organization “that really is integral to our campaign,” Strickland said, is First Command Financial Services and their charitable arm, First Command Educational Foundation.

Strickland noted these for-profit organizations support the program’s financial management classes – one two-hour class throughout the six-day retreat – that focus on financial preparedness and readiness so that families can learn how to deal with handling finances.

“First Command sends financial advisors to facilitate those classes at each and every retreat,” he said. “And they offer two years of follow-up … pro bono [free] wherever the military families actually return to.”

A small nonprofit group of Colorado National Guardsmen, called Patriot Anglers, also partners with Project Sanctuary to help with the fishing component of retreats, Strickland said.

One unique aspect of Project Sanctuary is the fact the nonprofit organization tracks and follows up with their families for two years after their retreats.

Family-based results “We haven’t had a single suicide among those 464 families that have come through our programs,” Strickland said.

While the divorce rate in the U.S. is 50 percent, he said, 90 percent of couples who’ve attended retreats are still together.

Strickland said Project Sanctuary takes pride in its “innovative” approach to supporting military families.

“We just want to continue to let people know about that impact that we’re having,” he said, “and bring on people who have an affinity and care about our military families.”

Enlisted leadership training review asks Sailors: What do you need?

Former crew member of the battleship USS Arizona (BB 39) and survivor of the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Lauren Bruner, visited with Sailors stationed aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guidedmissile destroyer USS Kidd (DDG 100), Sept. 19.

“As I was running to my battle station from the main deck, I was wounded by machine gun fire from a Japanese fighter plane as I got to the director station,” said Bruner.

“Within 10 minutes after the attack began, we were hit with a ‘lucky bomb’ that penetrated the decks, falling between gun turret one and two.”

Bruner received the Purple Heart after being wounded in battle on the Arizona.

Of the 335 men that survived the attack, less than 100 were actually aboard Arizona at the time; however, 1,177 Sailors

and Marines lost their lives, including Adm. Isaac Kidd, the USS Kidd’s namesake.

“Bruner was serving in the gunnery department aboard USS Arizona and was 15 feet away from the namesake of our warship when Adm. Kidd died,” said USS Kidd Commanding Officer, Cmdr. T.J. Zerr. “Adm. Kidd was the first flag officer in World War II who was killed in battle and for Bruner to have been there and survived, and then to be here on our ship, telling his account of the events that happened on that historic day is amazing and it is a great honor for us to be a part of this experience.”

After listening to stories from Bruner about his time in the service, Zerr presented him with a command ball cap, coin and t-shirt. Bruner, Zerr said, set the example of what it means to serve and what it means to fight for what you believe in.

“For someone who has been in the Navy and has made this

their life, and for the Sailors that serve, it is a great feeling to be around someone that has served with such honor and distinction in a moment in our nation’s history that changed not only the path of America but the entire world,” said Zerr. “He was part of a small group of individuals that made a huge different that we have all benefited from our entire lives growing up.”

“It’s important that Sailors know the history of our nation and get to meet the individuals who gave us our freedom and made history. Their honor, courage and commitment throughout the attack on Pearl Harbor is what gives us the strength to keep going each and every day,” said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Heather Johnson. “The reason why I joined the military is because of people like Bruner and what they have done for us. I feel really honored to be here today because not many people get the chance to have this experience.”

Nominate a Deserving MILITARY VETERAN

Sailors with opinions or ideas about how to best develop enlisted leaders are being asked to provide input on two Navy courses that are currently under review, said the review project’s leader Sept. 4.

The Center for Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) is the Curriculum Control Authority for the Petty Officer Second and Petty Officer First Class Selectee Leadership courses. CPPD administers the courses’ content, which is then taught to Sailors by their commands.

As part of its course review process, CPPD is conducting a large-scale, fleet-wide research project to assess the current courses’ value and effectiveness, according to Don Squibb, outcome and assessment manager for CPPD’s Requirements Directorate. The project is called Enlisted Leadership Requirements Review (ELRR).

“We’re collecting data for the ELRR project from across geographic regions, paygrades, ratings and communities to evaluate the current state of enlisted leadership training for first and second class petty officers and ask Sailors what training they need,” said Squibb, who is the project lead. “We’re casting a wide net because we need to define the ‘what is’ from the fleet’s perspective before we can recommend the best possible updates to the training that CPPD provides our Navy’s junior enlisted leaders.”

The ELRR project consists of CPPD teams visiting fleet concentration areas globally to conduct focus groups, which are each approximately two hours in length. The primary focus groups consist of nine active duty petty officers each (three E-4s, three E-5s, and three E-6s). Additional groups for chiefs and officers are being planned and will be held if deemed necessary after a review of the initial findings from the primary focus groups.

CPPD’s focus group facilitators will gather fleet recommendations on delivery and content improvements for the revised Enlisted Leadership Training curriculum.

Squibb said the questions center on active duty Sailors' experiences in their current leadership roles. Participants will also be asked to provide ideas for training topics based on their own perspectives of what

they believe they need to know, or in the case of more senior petty officers, what they wish they’d known prior to assuming higher leadership positions.

Commands agreeing to participate in the project will nominate their focus group participants on the basis of pay grade, according to Squibb. Sailors not selected to participate in a focus group but wanting to voice an opinion can provide their input by completing a survey. “While the primary focus group participants will be active duty Sailors, reserve component Sailors are invited to participate in the online surveys,” he said.

“The ELRR is focusing on training specifically for active duty Sailors. The training for reserve Sailors will be reviewed at a later, undetermined date.”

The online surveys are open to E-1 through O-6 active or reserve component Sailors. Three surveys are planned, according to Squibb. The first survey is currently open and assesses how much time Sailors spend on technical, management and leadership tasks. “The online surveys will assess relevant issues driving leadership training and professional development requirements,” he said.

All feedback will remain anonymous.

Squibb said the information CPPD collects through the focus groups and surveys will not be attributed to any single command or Sailor. Narrative comments will be aggregated and quantified for analysis, which CPPD will use to develop course revision recommendations.

CPPD Executive Director Doug Kibbey said the success of the ELRR project is dependent on Sailors’ degree of participation.

“We continually look for ways to refine and improve training for the fleet. For any of CPPD’s course reviews, fleet feedback is key to formulating the best possible training for our Sailors’ development and Navy mission readiness,” he said. “The ELRR project is especially dependent on Sailors’ input – in fact it’s vital to ensuring we provide the best possible leader development opportunities and relevant training that supports the fleet’s needs.”

Participating forces will exercise a wide range of capabilities and demonstrate the inherent exibility of joint forces.

These capabilities will encompass air-defense exercises and complex warďŹ ghting. “WASEXs allow us to practice targeting and attacking simulated threat task groups and opposing sea targets,â€? said Cmdr. Ernest Winston, commanding ofďŹ cer of the Shadowhawks of Electronic Attack Squadron 141. “As adversaries become more advanced, it requires us to adjust our tactics accordingly. This exercise gives us a chance to incorporate new tactics and perfect old ones.â€?

Valiant Shield is the largest joint unilateral military exercise in the PaciďŹ c this year, with a focus on integration of joint training among U.S. forces. “Integrating Air Force assets with Navy and Marine Corps helps to strengthen our existing tactics, techniques and procedures,â€? said U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Ernie Drake, squadron weapons systems ofďŹ cer of Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 533. “Using these assets allow us to accomplish our objectives through various mission sets, namely air interdiction of maritime targets, incorporating close escort and providing pre-strike sweep elements.â€?

This training enables real world proďŹ ciency in sustaining joint forces through de-

tecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas. “War-at-Sea isn’t something the Air Force gets to practice regularly, so this is the ďŹ rst time some of our pilots have seen this concept in action,â€? said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. “Barleyâ€? Baldwin, Valiant Shield deputy air boss, from the 302nd Fighter Squadron. “Getting to coordinate the wide array of air assets provides us a very unique opportunity. The lessons learned from exercises like Valiant Shield will assist the U.S. in continuing to develop regional and global power projection capabilities that provide a fullrange of options to succeed in defense of its interests and those of its allies and partners around the world. “Valiant Shield 2014 is a large joint military exercise, one of the largest anywhere in the world this year. It combines a series of vignettes to test our operational and tactical capabilities against high-end adversaries along with operations that allow us to asses and improve out interoperability between joint forces,â€? said Montgomery. “It also serves as (Task Force 70’s) major twoyear certiďŹ cation where we not only demonstrate our capabilities as a strike group, but also our ability as a task force to manage multiple carrier strike groups during complex operations. This is an extremely complex exercise for the George Washington and Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Groups.â€?

Valiant Shield is a U.S.-only exercise integrating an estimated 18,000 Navy, Air Force, Army and Marine Corps personnel, more than 200 aircraft and 19 surface ships, offering real-world joint operational experience to develop capabilities that provide a full range of options to defend U.S. interests and those of its allies and partners.

Arleigh Burke is deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts.

among Norfolk-based ships engaged in strikes Continued from B1 To conduct these strikes, the United States employed 47 TLAMs launched from USS Arleigh Burke and USS Philippine Sea operating from international waters in the Red Sea and North Arabian Gulf, as well as U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps ďŹ ghter, remotely piloted and bomber aircraft deployed to the U.S. Central Command area of operations. In addition, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates also participated in or supported the airstrikes against ISIL targets. All aircraft safely exited the strike areas.

Also, in Iraq yesterday, U.S. military forces continued to attack ISIL terrorists, using attack aircraft to conduct four airstrikes. The airstrikes destroyed two ISIL Humvees, an ISIL armed vehicle and an ISIL ďŹ ghting position southwest of Kirkuk. All aircraft exited the strike areas safely. To date, U.S. Central Command has conducted a total of 194 airstrikes across Iraq against ISIL. The United States conducted these strikes as part of the president’s comprehensive strategy to degrade and ultimately defeat ISIL. Going forward, the U.S. military will continue to conduct targeted airstrikes against ISIL in Syria and Iraq as local forces go on the offensive against this terrorist group.

Separately, the U.S. has also taken action to disrupt the imminent attack plotting against the United States and Western interests conducted by a network of seasoned al-Qa’ida veterans – sometimes referred to as the Khorasan Group – who have established a safe haven in Syria to develop external attacks, construct and test improvised explosive devices and recruit Westerners to conduct operations. These strikes were undertaken only by U.S. assets.

In total, U.S. Central Command conducted eight strikes against Khorasan Group targets west of Aleppo to include training camps, an explosives and munitions production facility, a communication building and command and control facilities.

Winter, along with the ight crew and members from the Triton’s Persistent Maritime Unmanned Systems Program OfďŹ ce (PMA-262), witnessed the historic landing at 7:53 a.m. During the approximately 11-hour 3,290 nautical mile ight originating from Northrop Grumman’s Palmdale, Calif., facility, the Triton ew along the southern U.S. border, the Gulf of Mexico and across Florida via an approved instrument route. Operators navigated the aircraft up the Atlantic Coast and Chesapeake Bay at altitudes in excess of 50,000 feet to ensure there were no conicts with civilian air trafďŹ c. “The coordination to bring the Navy’s largest unmanned

asset across the country was signiďŹ cant and involved many organizations,â€? said Capt. Jim Hoke, PMA-262’s program manager. “This phenomenal team executed the system’s longest ight to date exactly as planned.â€?

Hoke said this perfect execution was no surprise to him since the system has exceeded performance standards during the course of the last year. Triton has completed 15 test ights prior to today’s ferry ight, demonstrating its ability to operate at various speeds and altitudes.

PMA-262 has scheduled Triton operations to start at Pax River within the next several weeks. The Triton integrated test team will conduct further envelope expansion, sensor, communications and interoperability testing.

Three Triton test vehicles will y approximately 2,000 hours before achieving initial operational capability in 2017.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus hosted a ship-naming ceremony Sept.

18 to announce that SSN 792, a Virginia-class attack submarine, will bear the name USS Vermont.

Mabus named the submarine to honor the longstanding partnership its namesake state has had with the Navy.

“From our nation’s beginning, the people of Vermont have tirelessly supported our Navy, enabling us to become the unparalleled fighting force we are today,” said Mabus. “I am here on the banks of Lake Champlain, to once again honor the sailors and Marines who have come from this great state, and to honor your support of our Navy and Marine Corps and your naval history.”

Vermont’s Lake Champlain was the site of two critical historic naval battles.

Under the command of Commodore Benedict Arnold, the 1776 Battle of

Valcour Island had a profound impact on the outcome of the Revolutionary War, and during the War of 1812, the U.S. defended Lake Champlain against invasion from Great Britain in the Battle of Plattsburgh.

“The name USS Vermont has a long history in our Navy,” said Mabus. “In honor of the victories on Lake Champlain, following the War of 1812, the first USS Vermont was laid down and became one of our nation’s largest and most powerful ships. The second USS Vermont was one of our great battleships in the years before World War I, and was one of the ships that led the Great White Fleet around the world.”

This is the first ship named for Vermont since 1920 when the second USS Vermont was decommissioned. Virginia-class submarines provide the Navy with the capabilities required to maintain the nation’s undersea supremacy well into the 21st century. They have enhanced stealth, sophisticated sur-

veillance capabilities, and special warfare enhancements that enable them to meet the Navy’s multi-mission requirements.

Virginia-class submarines have the capability to attack targets ashore with highly accurate Tomahawk cruise missiles and conduct covert long-term surveillance of land areas, littoral waters or other sea-based forces. Other missions include anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare; mine delivery and minefield mapping. They are also designed for special forces delivery and support.

Each Virginia-class submarine is 7,800-tons and 377 feet in length, has a beam of 34 feet, and can operate at more than 25 knots submerged. It is designed with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the planned life of the ship, reducing lifecycle costs while increasing underway time. The submarine will be built in partnership with General Dynamics/Electric Boat Corp. in Groton, Conn.

Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert took a moment at the 21st International Seapower Symposium (ISS) held at the U.S. Naval War College this week to discuss how each Sailor in the Navy helps build working relationships with other navies.

“There are 113 different nations here at the symposium,” Greenert said. “I get the opportunity to interface with chiefs of the foreign navies, but it’s our Sailors who are going to change the attitudes so our partners understand what we are all about.”

More than 170 naval leaders representing 113 nations are at the symposium to take part in discussions relating to current, vital maritime topics such as enhancing coalition operations, future trends in maritime security, and implications of climate change on maritime security. There are also sessions scheduled to address specific geographic challenges that navies face.

“It’s a great opportunity when this many nations’ navies come together,” Greenert added. “Can we set a code for unplanned encounters at sea? We have done this in the Western Pacific. Now, can we do this worldwide?” Greenert said.

In addition to the talks, four ships were in port for the symposium: USNS Choctaw County (JHSV 2), USS Harford (SSN 768), USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109), and USS Arlington (LPD 24).

APS annual planning conference concludes

Maritime professionals from Africa, Europe and the U.S. concluded the Africa Partnership Station (APS) Annual Planning Conference, Sept. 17.

The three-day conference allowed training ofďŹ cers from African maritime forces to express maritime capacity desires and work with U.S. and European stakeholders to build training plans to meet capability gaps.

The conference also allowed for dialogue on regional maritime issues and how to increase regional cooperation to address those issues. “I had the privilege of being APS commander when we ďŹ rst began this initiative in 2007 - and it’s great to see many nations we worked with then, continuing to work with us,â€? said Rear Adm. John Nowell, deputy chief of staff for Strategy, Resources, and Plans, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet, addressing participants at the conference. “We’ve made important advances in the program and in each of your navies, and we must continue to work together to improve our

collective capability to recognize and then respond to maritime threats.�

The ďŹ rst ofďŹ cial APS deployment, which Nowell commanded, took place during 2007-2008 in West and Central Africa with the U.S. Navy ship USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) and MSC-contracted vessel HSV Swift (HSV 2).

Nowell pointed out to participants that APS is no longer about a U.S. platform, but an international effort.

Naval leaders of nations attending expressed appreciation for the beneďŹ ts of the APS program. “The beneďŹ ts of this program are so numerous and not only for us, the country of Nigeria, but the continent of Africa,â€? said Nigerian navy Rear Adm. Begroy Ibe-Enwo.

The conference brought together representatives from European APS partner providers, U.S. military forces, interagency stakeholders and African partners from Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Madagascar, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Seychelles, and Togo. “I can see from the people who are here today that we are closer than before; we have formed a community through these exercises and planning events,� said Gha-

The U.S. Navy is increasing energy awareness by incorporating the Navy Shore Geospatial Energy Module (NSGEM), a tool designed to help improve energy efďŹ ciency at Navy installations.

Imagine a map with a dashboard in which the buildings of your military installation light up for you to visualize the energy consumption of each structure. The NSGEM

offers this technology, which translates information into visual cues for better data interpretation.

The NSGEM will assist the Navy with data accuracy, centralized information, transparency and visibility of information in energy consumption throughout every U.S. Navy installation by translating information into visual cues for better data interpretation. “While the primary function of the NSGEM is heightened energy awareness and easier accessibility of energy consumption information, the

end goal is to increase data credibility while identifying potential savings on energy consumption,� said Sandrine Schultz, creator of NSGEM and the energy program manager at Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC).

It is a one-stop shop for every Sailor at all levels of the Navy enterprise for accessing centralized information. This tool enables building-level transparency of energy consumption, facilitates energy cultural behavior changes, and allows personnel to identify areas for im-

In the Sept. 11 issue of The Flagship, we announced that the 2014-2015 season of the wonderfully popular series Broadway in Norfolk will be officially arriving at the beautiful Chrysler Hall beginning with the nine-time Tony Award winning best musical “The Book of Mormon” from Oct. 28 through Nov. 2.

November also rounds out the month with a trip to the land of OZ. The multi award winning musical “Wicked” returns to Norfolk Nov. 26 through Dec. 7.

January brings us the longest run-

ning musical in Broadway history. “The Phantom of the Opera,” returns to Norfolk, Jan. 8 - 18, 2015, with brand new staging, new sets and new choreography.

Directed by the extremely talented Laurence Connor from the United Kingdom, who also co-directed the new version of “Les Miserables,” he spares no expense in bringing to life this new “Phantom.”

Based on the 1910 horror novel by Gaston Leroux, it is a story as old as time itself. Unwanted love, desire, obsession, all reach a crescendo as ”The Phantom,” a lonely, deformed composer, haunting the grand Paris Opera House falls madly in love with Christine, one of the numerous

singers at the Opera House. He becomes Christine’s tutor and with his help, Christine debuts at a gala becoming a sensation. Raul, Christine’s childhood sweetheart also courts Christine and she must now choose between the two.

This new “Phantom” is one of the largest productions currently on tour with a cast and orchestra of 52 performers. All the beloved songs like “Music of the Night,” “All I Ask Of You,” and “Masquerade” are here as well as many exciting special effects including the show’s legendary chandelier.

Boardwalk Weekend’s signature event is the renowned Neptune’s International Sandsculpting Championship. Virginia Opera, the official opera company of the Commonwealth of Virginia, launches the 40th anniversary season of the company with a landmark production of the Stephen Sondheim blockbuster “Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

For this groundbreaking event, the Virginia Opera company welcomes a legendary production team led by director Ron Daniels, who co-wrote the stage adaptation of the original Victorian “penny dreadful” that inspired Sondheim to create his masterpiece of American musical theatre.

Virginia Opera offers this season opening in a co-production with Opera Theatre of St. Louis, which debuted this version with Daniels at the helm in May 2012. The design team, led by acclaimed set designer Ricardo Hernandez, provided an incredible atmospheric backdrop for this production that ties the scenic design elements impeccably to the drama that ensues onstage. “Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” harkens back to late Victorian London, complete with drab and murky skyline, smokestacks and an early Industrial-era set offering a menacing backdrop to the tale of terror. Imprisoned on a trumped-up charge by a lecherous judge who covets his lovely young wife, Sweeney Todd is sent away on a life sentence. Will the judge have his way?

Kids are getting serious about money sooner than you think Brandpoint

More evidence has emerged that parents are doing a better job teaching kids about money, and young adults are getting better at managing it. For instance, the majority of millennials are investing for retirement by the age of 24, according to the Spring 2014 Merrill Edge Report. This is in sharp contrast to older generations who began investing for the future at an average age of 33. It shows that younger Americans are paying attention to money and learning lessons from the recession, but it also indicates that parents are doing more to teach these lessons early.

Money issues demand frequent conversation and teaching moments, and back-toschool season is the perfect time to explore financial lessons and encourage kids to benefit from the experience of others. There is no age limit for helping kids learn to manage money – teenagers and young children alike can become financially literate. Whether you have youngsters or college-bound kids, there are ways to teach your children how to manage money responsibly.

Here are tips for teenagers:

Show your teen how to create a budget – Work with your kids on making a plan for spending an allowance or earnings from a job. By age 13 or 14, they may be thinking about buying a car or similar big purchase.

That takes effort and smart planning.

Introduce and explain investing – Investing smaller sums with limited consequences is a great way for kids to learn about managing risk. For 43 percent of Merrill Edge Report respondents, choosing among different investment products is the most complicated part of investing; starting early can help build a base of knowledge.

Plan for college – Talk about the cost of college. Let your children know how much you can cover and how much they need to contribute. If you have established a savings plan, discuss how it works. Explain the difference between costs at a private and state school. Discuss loans options, and let them research scholarships.

Create learning opportunities – If your kid is shocked by how much of their first paycheck goes to Uncle Sam, sit down and explain taxes, Medicare and Social Security.

how to balance a checkbook and track the account online. Consider bringing your kid along when you visit your financial advisor to establish a baseline understanding of the financial planning process.

Tips for younger kids: Teach budgeting – An allowance can be a great first step in showing your kids how to manage money. Consider giving money every week to young children, at two-week intervals for preteens and monthly for teenagers. Spreading out the timing helps children understand the need to set goals and manage spending.

Show the value of saving – It’s natural for money to burn a hole in the pockets of young kids, but you can help them discover the benefits of delayed gratification. If there’s a toy they want, suggest they forgo spending on ice cream and instead save to make the bigger purchase.

Let them earn extra – You probably expect your kids to do daily chores. Consider offering them the chance to make extra money by helping clean the garage, wash windows or taking on another job beyond the routine. Earning for extra work instills good habits and gives children more control over saving and spending.

Introduce philanthropy – When kids are very young, they can understand charitable gifts. Talk about organizations they might like to support, then earmark part of their allowance for donations.

Create learning opportunities – If your child spends an entire allowance right away, resist requests for more money before the next allowance is due. Negative consequences can carry powerful lessons. Talk with your child about how to do better next time.

NEVER TOO EARLY TO START TEENS ON A BUDGET Brandpoint

At some point, everyone will have to learn how to live on a budget, whether it’s at home, at work or with a nonprofit organization. For teenagers with a limited income and plenty of interests that cost money, learning to manage a budget can never come too early.

Money management is a necessary skill, and learning how to apply good management skills to a set budget at an early age can help teens grow into responsible adults. To help teens develop these financial skills, parents should work with their children to set a budget limit, create a list of wants and a list of needs, and look for ways expenses could be reduced.

The following five tips provide some ways to help a teen live within a budget.

1. Identify technological wants and needs It seems everyone has a smartphone these

days, and teens often think they can survive only with the latest and greatest in cellphone technology. However, the cost of the device and service plans quickly adds up. Discuss with your teen how the phone will be used, and find out if they are willing to reduce expenses to save money on cellphone technology.

2. Create a spending journal Teenagers can keep a journal for one week on every item purchased during that week, as well as the item’s price. Once the information has been collected, divide it all into categories.

How many of the purchases were needs and how many were wants? How many of the purchases were immediately consumed, and how many lasted for a couple of hours or days?

This information will give the teenager valuable insight into his shopping habits and patterns, allowing him to better identify where his money is going each week.

3. Develop a spending strategy In some families, a teenager may receive an allowance designated for specific categories like transportation or clothing, for example. And in some families, teens are expected to work to earn the spending money they’ll use to pay for fun and those needed items.

As the budget is being established, parents and teens should have a discussion about what parents will cover and what teens are expected to cover. This helps teens establish a spending strategy that will not overlap with funds already provided by parents.

4. Make a wish list Wish lists can help teens set goals for what they will save their money to purchase, and they also give family members excellent ideas for holiday and birthday presents. Establishing savings goals early will help teens work toward purchasing that first car, their

first house or something else that is very important. Parents should encourage their teens to price check their wish list as well, so they know how much they’ll need to save before they are able to purchase an item on the list.

5. Set up a savings fund In relation to the wish list, teens should establish a savings fund. A discussion between parents and teens should be on how much money is put into the savings fund each week, when and for what reasons money can be withdrawn from the fund, and what the teen plans to use the fund for.

For example, is it only to purchase items on the wish list, or is the teen looking ahead and saving for college expenses or rent for when they move out?

Budgeting and wise money-spending skills will serve your teen well for the rest of his or her lifetime.

Joey Logano wins second Chase for the Cup race

Maybe that â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sliced Breadâ&#x20AC;? nickname for Joey Logano isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t such a bad one after all.

At New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sept. 21, he looked like the best thing since sliced bread as he charged through the pack late in the Sylvania 300 to win Chase race No. 2 and secure his spot in the Contender Round, which begins after this Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s race at Dover International Speedway.

For Logano, who failed to live up to the expectations heaped on him when he joined Joe Gibbs Racing as a rookie, the 2014 season is one any driver would be proud of. Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s victory was his fourth of the season, the seventh of his Cup career, and his second at New Hampshire. His ďŹ rst win there was a ďŹ&#x201A;uke, as Logano, then driving for Gibbs, got the victory when he was running in midpack, stayed on the track while the leader pitted and won when rain ended the race at that point. That June 2009 win was also the ďŹ rst in Cup for Logano, who is from Middletown, Connecticut, and considers New Hampshire his home track.

This time around he won it straight up, marching through the ďŹ eld after a four-tire pit stop that left him in 16th place. He quickly worked his way into the top 5, then passed Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick on a restart with 29 laps to go, then held off Harvick on two more restarts to seal the win. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I thought we gave it away at that point, but four tires were good and we had some good restarts and were able to get ourselves back up there,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is my home race track â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the coolest place to win for me. I could never pick a better race track to win. I watched my ďŹ rst Cup race here when I was 5, and I won that other Cup race here, but I just felt like I had to win one the right way here, and this means so much.â&#x20AC;?

Loganoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest win is the third straight in Sprint Cup for his current employer, Team Penske, which won the two races leading up to New Hampshire with Keselowski, who drives the No. 2 Ford.

It also means that Logano and Keselowski are in the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seat, so to speak, when it

comes to performances in the Chase. Logano ďŹ nished fourth in the Chase opener at Chicagoland Speedway, while Keselowski was seventh at New Hampshire. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got to do to win this [championship] right now,â&#x20AC;? Logano said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Both teams are, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m proud of that.â&#x20AC;?

Loganoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crew chief, Todd Gordon, said he liked the idea of putting four tires on Loganoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ford late in the race, even though it meant heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d restart in midpack on a track that generally is difďŹ cult to ďŹ nd room to complete passes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We took the opportunity to come down pit road and put Joey on offense,â&#x20AC;? Gordon said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an awesome offensive player, so we put four tires on and put fuel in it and let him do his thing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just put him in a position where he could do what heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really good at, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wheeling a race car and not having to back up, but let him go forward.â&#x20AC;?

The race was yet another that Kevin Harvick and his No. 4 Chevrolet team at Stewart-Haas Racing led the most laps, but failed to win. He led 104 of 303 laps, but wound up third. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had a fast car,â&#x20AC;? Harvick said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Track position is tough, and it wound up being really hard racing there and Brad (Keselowski) moved me out of the way and I got up out of the groove. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And then at the end there, NASCAR must not be able to see the lines on the restart there and the No. 22 (Joey Logano) was way early all day. But all in all, we did what we had to do, and I just enjoyed racing that hard.â&#x20AC;?

And while several Chase contenders including Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch and Jeff Gordon suffered major setbacks in their efforts to advance to the next Chase round, Aric Almirola, driver of the No. 43 Ford for Richard Petty Motorsports, bounced back from a blown engine at Chicagoland to ďŹ nish sixth at New Hampshire, which is not one of his better tracks. Now heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just 10 points shy of being in the top 12 that will advance to the Contender Round of the Chase after Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dover race. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We cut it down to a realistic possibility going to Dover,â&#x20AC;? Almirola said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We ran sixth, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got to try and put pressure on those other guys. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re down, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not out.â&#x20AC;?

Young American couple Tom and Anna Reed (James Franco and Kate Hudson) fall into severe debt while renovating Anna’s family home in London. As the couple faces the loss of their dream to have a house and start a family, they discover that the tenant in the apartment below them has been murdered and he left behind a stash of cash – $400,000 worth. Though initially hesitant, Tom and Anna decide that the plan is simple: all they have to do is quietly take the money and use only what’s necessary to get them out of debt. But when they start spending the money and can’t seem to stop, they find themselves the target of a deadly adversary – the thief who stole it – and that’s when very bad things start happening to good people.

The new 3D animated feature from Laika Studios tells the tale of the Boxtrolls, monsters who live underneath the charming streets of Cheesebridge, who crawl out of the sewers at night to steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend the townspeople have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are a community of lovable oddballs who are raising as one of their own an abandoned and orphaned human boy named Eggs.

When the Boxtrolls are targeted by a villainous exterminator who is bent on eradicating them, Eggs must venture aboveground to save them, where he teams with an adventurous young girl to save not only the Boxtrolls but the soul of Cheesebridge.

Position: BUILDING MAINTENANCE ENGINEER WITH CFC CERTIFICATE POSITION DESCRIPTION The building maintenance engineer will be responsible for both preventive and corrective HVAC maintenance work and minimal installations. This is a full time position, Monday through Friday, but requires on-call availability for certain emergency situations.

SPECIFIC DUTIES â&#x20AC;˘ Perform preventive and corrective maintenance services to existing HVAC equipment in a multi-story commercial building. â&#x20AC;˘ Install, repair, and maintain machinery and mechanical equipment such as motors, engines, pumps, belts, fans, air handling units, VAV and fan powered boxes. â&#x20AC;˘ Maintain the safe operation of systems including electronic / pneumatic environmental controls, oil / gas fired water tube boilers, and auxiliary equipment such as various types of pumps, de-aerating tanks, air compressor blowers, etc. â&#x20AC;˘ Examine environmental control and stationary systems to diagnose problems using proper inspection / testing and monitoring techniques while exhibiting safe and proper use of tools. â&#x20AC;˘ Must be able to quickly become familiar with the design and layout of the facilities; to learn the locations of installed environmental control and monitoring systems / equipment; and understand operating procedures relating to environmental controls. â&#x20AC;˘ Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures. â&#x20AC;˘ Inspects completed work for conformance with requirements of local building and safety codes. â&#x20AC;˘ Must maintain a clean and safe workplace while and after performing maintenance tasks.
