FIFTY YEARS AFTER FIRST CARRIER KENNEDY, KEELLAYING FOR NEW SHIP SATURDAY

One might well understand if Caroline Kennedy finds the Aug. 22 ceremony at Virginia’s largest shipyard a little surreal.

The “keel-laying” for the Navy’s second Gerald R. Fordclass carrier, the John F. Kennedy, is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Newport News Shipbuilding, and there will be a live webcast.

A celebration of the start of construction, the event comes a little more than a half-century after the keel-laying for the first carrier to bear her father’s name – in October 1964, in the same shipyard – for which she was the sponsor.

Now 57 and the nation’s ambassador to Japan, Kennedy will sponsor the new carrier, too, participating by video.

Other members of the Kennedy family and their friends will be on hand, including U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy III, D-Mass., grandson of Sen. Robert Kennedy.

“Throughout her decades sailing our seas, USS John F. Kennedy embodied President Kennedy’s love for our country and our Navy,” the congressman said in an email Aug. 21.

“With new technology and capabilities, but the same name and spirit, the new USS John F. Kennedy and the thousands of Sailors who will serve on her will continue to carry on his legacy. I’m truly honored to participate in the keel laying of this ship and look forward to its launching in the coming years.”

Procrastination should be a four-letter word. The amount of things we put off until tomorrow (or longer) is amazing, maybe even shocking. I know when I look back over my Navy career (and life) I know that I procrastinated often. I always had an excuse why I couldn’t immediately start studying for my next Navywide exam, working on my education, saving money, beginning a fitness program, etc. What’s funny is that I think I made a resolution each New Year to do something beneficial in my life. The sad thing is that many times I found it easy to say, “I’ll start next week.” Somewhere along the way I ran out of weeks.

I presume it’s just human nature to push off until tomorrow what we should do today. But why is that? If we clearly see the benefit of doing something today, why do we wait?

I have my own suspicions, but I think many would say we wait because we lack the necessary “need” for a particular goal. I guess that explains why someone might quit smoking only after being diagnosed with chronic lung cancer, or why an alcoholic gets help only after receiving a DUI (or worse), or why a Sailor studies for a Navywide exam only after his or her peers are advanced.

Most of us probably don’t require such extreme impetus for change, but we probably do need a swift kick in the butt from time to time to make us act on a goal. Doing a little research, I found a list of reasons why people procrastinate. Of note, these made the most sense: ■ Fear of failure – you think that making an effort and not succeeding would be a great personal defeat so you refuse to try at all.

■ Undervaluing the rewards – you feel that the effort to complete the task (almost any task) would not be worth the rewards.

■ Fear of success – you feel that success is based on chance and you cannot keep up that success.

■ Overwhelming yourself – there are three ways you can overwhelm yourself into doing nothing:

may magnify a task until it seems impossible to

tackle.

■You may assume you must do everything at once rather than breaking the task into manageable units to complete one step at a time.

■ You may obsess about everything you have to do, and haven’t done yet, until you are paralyzed and overwhelmed.

Procrastination is almost never good. Waiting almost always costs you time, money, success, etc.

Here’s my challenge: Start today. Don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to come up with a resolution that sounds good, but have no intent on achieving. Why wait? If you can’t come up with any logical reason why you can’t start today, then just do it.

Just think, if you had started saving money years ago, you would have quite a nest egg today. If you had started to work out years ago, you might be in much better health today. If you had started taking college courses, even one course at a time, you might be close to (or already have) your degree. If you had studied earlier for a particular exam, you might be a higher pay grade.

The up side to starting now is that you get a four-month jump on New Years. The downside is, well, I guess there isn’t one, unless you count not being able to tell others you’re a “procrastinator,” as if it were a good thing.

Shipmates, we all have goals. We all have desires in life and we all have a vision of where our lives might be five to 10 years from now. How do you plan to achieve success? What pay grade do you want to achieve? If you have a plan, when are you going to start? How about today? If you don’t have a vision or a plan, why not? How about drafting your plan today? I’ve heard that if you write things down its easier to stay committed to goals. If that’s the case, write down your plan. If you are married, share the plan with your spouse (and children if applicable). Share the plan with your supervisor and friends; support from family and co-workers can often keep you on track.

Map out your goals and start today. Do everything in your power to reduce the things on your would have, could have or should have list!

HSC-7 FIRES NEW WEAPON SYSTEM FOR THE FIRST TIME

Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 7, became the first helicopter squadron in the Northeast to fire an HSC Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II (APKWS II) from an MH-60S Seahawk helicopter during a live-fire exercise on Aug. 17.

The exercise marked the start of the HSC-7 work-up cycle in preparation for deployment in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility with USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 10.

“We’re also making combat maneuvers during the exercise in preparation for our combat deployment,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jason Walters, HSC-7 training officer. “We have to have so many qualified people capable of actually pulling the trigger.”

The APKWS II is a laser-guided rocket

similar to standard, unguided AGM-114 Hellfire missiles. The new system serves as a low-cost, high accuracy variant to the Hellfire missiles previously used against lightly armored targets.

“For MH-60S aircraft specifically, the LAU-61G/A and APKWS II add a medium-range guided option to its robust weapons footprint,” said Lt. Erik Gustafson, HSC-7 tactics officer. “The MH-60S will employ APKWS II along with its existing 20 mm cannon, 2.75" unguided rockets, Hellfire missiles, and crew-served door guns, providing the warfare commander with a lethal and effective helicopter weapons system.”

HSC-7 employed two helicopters for the exercise at a practice range approximately 20 miles off the Virginia coast near Naval Air Station Oceana – one performing combat maneuvers and firing the APKWS II at both stationary and moving targets, and one serving as a support air-

craft, with an observing training officer and two rescue swimmers aboard.

“It is a lot more precise,” said Lt. Brian Cramer, while using the system during the exercise. “Instead of needing to fire multiple missiles to make sure you hit a target, this is just ‘one-and-go.’”

The pilots deployed the missiles quickly, aimed at a target using a laser, and immediately deployed a volley of missile fire.

Training officers and qualifying pilots observed significant damage to every sea surface floating target provided by Navy Air Systems Command after firing a minimal number of missiles.

“The event allowed HSC-7 crews to build proficiency in employing the system before we commence joint training with our Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 counterpart, Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74,” said Gustafson. “Together, we will provide CVW-3, CVN 69 and the whole CSG-10 team with an un-

matched anti-surface warfare capability.”

According to Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, the MH-60S Seahawk is the Navy’s most versatile helicopter, performing missions such as vertical replenishment, search-and-rescue, regional security, medical evacuations and others. The MH-60R Seahawk is a more combat-based aircraft, primarily for anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. Both helicopters will deploy with participating HSC’s during the upcoming 2016 deployment.

Lincoln CPO selectees visit USS Wisconsin

Chief petty ofďŹ cers (CPO) and CPO selectees assigned to aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) joined hundreds of other CPOs and selectees during a CPO 365 Phase II training event at USS Wisconsin (BB 64) and Nauticus museum in Norfolk, Aug. 18.

The trip was part of the six-week season during which CPO selectees will learn about the Navy’s history and heritage, leadership skills, and the power of being part of the chief’s mess. “These events show the strength of the chief’s mess,� said Lincoln Command Master Chief Lee Salas. “When you gather all the chiefs from the local area and you put them in one place, you see the

power that they have.�

Events like this heritage trip are not only meant to show the power of the chief’s mess, but to also teach the selectees about the unity of the mess. “When I was selected I was stationed in Japan. I did not have the opportunity to go through as many heritage trips and be as involved with other messes throughout the area because I was in a small town and there were only three of us who made it,� said Chief Aviation Electronics Technician Tracy Moore. “Having each mess come together on the Wisconsin is an awesome idea. It shows unity and what the chiefs stand for.�

Fab Lab tests new 3D printed throat guard

Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center’s (MARMC) Fab Lab is in the ďŹ nal stages of testing a new 3D printed throat guard for Navy garbage grinders. MARMC Fab Lab Project OfďŹ cer Lt. Todd Coursey and NAVSEA 05D In-Service LCS (littoral combat ship) Design Integration Manager Cory Emmons have been working together to create and test the new and innovative throat guard aboard naval vessels.

There has been a long standing issue with garbage grinders aboard ships. Coursey and Emmons set out to create a throat guard that would help alleviate the issue. “We developed a functional re-

quirements list and speciďŹ cations in order to meet the various sink sizes in the ships’ galleys,â€? said Emmons. “We had to ensure that this new throat guard would be able to withstand certain environmental tests, like being immersed in expected sink water with various detergents and oils. The next step was to ďŹ nd a place to fabricate this part and that’s where Coursey came in.â€?

Coursey was provided with the speciďŹ cations and guidelines from NAVSEA 05D. He had his group work with additive-manufacturing experts applied science and technology transfer (AST2) to fabricate the new throat guard. “We chose to make the throat guard from ABS plastic because of its quality and suitability for plumbing systems,â€? said Coursey.

Initial testing was done at Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock where the throat guard tested successfully and even surpassed its commercial variants. The next step was to place the throat guard aboard a ship and test it during sea trials for three months. “This way we could see how the throat guard handles the daily rigors. The plan is to get feedback from Ship’s Force, make any changes necessary and then, make this available to the Fleet,� said Emmons.

The idea is that when these ships are in port, at Fab Labs like the one at MARMC, they will be able to potentially order a non-critical part and have it in a matter of hours and reduce stocked inventory. “This throat guard could be the

ďŹ rst step in a line of successful parts created by Fab Labs. It’s proof of technology and implementation.

This is the Navy taking an idea, designing it, testing it and ďŹ elding it, which is a huge acquisition cycle condensed into one small component. Through the throat guard, we have created a process whereby it can happen,â€? said Emmons.

Currently, the throat guard is undergoing testing aboard USS Coronado (LCS 4). “It was good to work with you and your team and gain exposure to the exciting potential 3D printing applications, particularly with regards to LCS class ships,â€? said USS Coronado Executive OfďŹ cer Cmdr. Naval Weapons Station Yorktown trains new chiefs during CPO 365 transition

It’s that time of year again ... the sounds of intense physical fitness, instructional training, and educational games. It’s been called many things: from initiation, to indoctrination, to a Navy tradition. Today, it is better known as CPO (chief petty officer) 365 Phase II. CPO 365 Phase II, also called chief’s transition season, is a rite of passage as first class petty officers transition to CPO. This training is specific to the Navy, as no other branch of the armed forces goes into such detail for training its senior enlisted leadership.

“The importance of CPO 365 gives first class petty officers an in-depth training platform to understand the dynamics of truly effective deckplate leadership,” said Naval Weapons Station (WPNSTA) Yorktown Command Master Chief Lee Friedlander. “CPO 365 provides this training in a 365 day forum to include counseling, mentoring, Fleet and Family Services, CACO [casuality assistance calls officer], DAPA [drug and alcohol program advisor], mental health, evaluation writing, etc., creating an easier transition to chief.”

“CPOs are among the most

respected group of enlisted leaders in the world,” said Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Mike Stevens on the 365CPO.com website. “We must ensure that we provide the type of modern day leadership and high level training that ensures this remains true now and in the future.”

WPNSTA Yorktown and its tenant commands are gearing up for the CPO 365 Phase II season for their 14 new CPO selectees. According to Friedlander, CPO 365 is an essential part of the transition from first class petty officer to CPO. “I was selected for chief petty officer in 2001 and, over the last 14 years, our Season has gone through several iterations and name changes: Initiation, Induction, Season of Pride, CPO 365,” Friedlander added. “However, one premise that has always remained the same is the leadership, training, knowledge, expertise, and respect that ultimately result in a successful transition to chief petty officer.”

The rank of CPO was officially recognized on April 1, 1893, when General Order No. 409 (Enlisted Pay Chart), signed by then Secretary of the Navy B. F. Tracy, distinguished the rank of Chief Quartermaster, Chief Boatswain’s Mate, Chief Carpenter’s Mate, Chief Master-atArms, and Chief Gunner’s

Mate. Though records indicate earlier references to the rank of CPO, this is considered the official CPO birthday.

At the 100th celebration of the CPO birthday, former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Frank B. Kelso said, “The example set by chiefs for the last century inspires our young men and women of today. Indeed, what Americans see in our impressive young Sailors is the tradition of devotion and dedication the first chiefs established with their sacrifices and valor.”

During CPO365 Phase II, CPO selectees are given a wide range of instruction specific to the role of the CPO in today’s Navy. This includes leading and managing a division, mentoring and supporting junior officers, communication with the chain of command and executing the expectations of the leadership triad.

“CPO 365 is designed to be delivered in two phases, but I actually believe in fact it is three phases,” Friedlander explained. “Phase I, when

the Chiefs Mess and first class petty officers spend the year training and building a working relationship. Phase II, when the chief selectees receive six weeks of intense training building team-work and camaraderie. And Phase III, is that first year of actually wearing khakis, understanding the roles and responsibilities of a chief petty officer when the new chief needs the most guidance and mentorship.”

“CPO 365 Phase II has really been an eye opening experience,” said Chief (select) Master at Arms Derek Vasko. “It is an amazing feeling when all of the selectees come together and complete a task. We have observed ourselves shedding old habits and mentalities.”

The phrase “Ask the Chief” is commonplace aboard every ship, squadron, and naval installation around the world.

CPOs are known and expected to be.

“Achieving the rank of chief petty officer is not a destination, it is merely a milestone in one’s career.

This is not the time to take a knee as if you have arrived,” Friedlander said. “I expect 100 percent every day. No excuses. When you feel like you have reached your limit, reach down deep and find some more. There is always more!”

Through the course of its history, the tradition of CPO 365 has extended into the other branches of the Armed Forces. Some senior enlisted leaders from the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps have requested the opportunity to go through the CPO transition, not just as a rite of passage, but also for the opportunity to learn leadership skills outside their own service.

“As a Marine, you’re in a leadership position from Cpl. to Sgt. Maj.,” said retired Marine Corps Master

Gunnery Sgt. George Bieber, an initiated CPO. “However, leading by example was the Corps’ thought pattern, whereas the Navy’s was to treat others as you would want to be treated, remembering where you came from.

“I am proud to be called a Navy chief,” Bieber continued. “To this day, when I wear my Marine Corps uniform, you will see the rank of Master Chief under my left breast pocket.”

CPO 365 Phase II ends on Sept. 16, when the new CPOs get to wear their khakis, put on “the hat,” and have their anchors pinned on them. To all CPOs, this is considered “the greatest day of my life.”

The CPO selectees know they couldn’t have gotten to this point without the support and dedication of the Chiefs Mess.

“We are thankful for the guidance and mentorship of the Chiefs Mess and the time that they dedicate to our professional and personal development,” Vasko concluded.

USO center aboard JEBLCFS celebrates 10 year anniversary

On the back deck overlooking the Little Creek Marina, troops and military family members lined up to enjoy a free lunch, complete with a slice of birthday cake, in celebration of the United Service Organizations (USO) of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia’s (USOHRCV) 10 year anniversary aboard Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) Little Creek.

“Happy Anniversary USO,” said base Commander, Capt.

Frank Hughlett between bites of barbecue in a video posted to the USOHRCV instagram.

“Ten great years here at Little Creek.”

The luncheon, which brought together close to 250 attendees, allowed service members and their families to show their appreciation for the hard work that the USO staff and volunteers make on a daily basis. Mission BBQ, located near Town Center in Virginia Beach, provided pulled pork sandwiches, cole slaw and various barbecue sauces while Sam’s Club in Newport News donated a festive sheet cake for the occasion. The event also included an appearance from Ronald McDonald and the Fleet and Family Services Center.

“We wanted to take this opportunity to bring awareness to what we do,” said Kevin Hoffer, director of USO Center Operations. “We want to impact as many service members as possible.”

Since 2005, the staff and volunteers of the Little Creek USO have prepared lunch, which is provided free of charge, to those working aboard JEB Little Creek. Two volunteers, Jackie Wern and Rita Swan, have volunteered at USO Little Creek since the Center first opened its doors, and have since become well known institutions at the base. Both well into their 80s, the selfproclaimed “Golden Girls of the USO” have also previously received awards from WAVY 10 news, and Suntrust Bank in recognition of their dedication and service to the troops.

“Jackie and Rita are our backbone,” said Jean Hammond, center director of USO Little Creek. “They’ve both been here since the center opened 10 years ago, and they’ll probably be here well after I am gone.”

The USO Little Creek, which is located at 1604 Amphibious Dr., adjacent to the Marina, has always strived to be a home away from home for service members. In addition to a free hot lunch served with a friendly smile, service members can also find free Wi-Fi, computers for checking email or accessing the internet, and a place to relax when a break is needed.

In addition, USO Little Creek offers meeting space for family readiness groups, hosts both pre- and post-deployment functions, and offers the USO’s popular United Through Reading program, where service members who are about to deploy can record a DVD video of themselves reading a book to his or her children at home.

These DVDs, along with a copy of the book, are then mailed to the service member’s family.

“It’s the mission of the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia to lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families,” said USOHRCV President and CEO Paula Moran. “We’re proud of the work we do here at Little Creek every day and we look forward to serving another 10 years and beyond.”

“Our center here, and its offerings have always been well received,” said Karen Licari, chief operating officer of the USOHRCV. “My personal favorite is our United Through Reading program, but it’s also hard to beat seeing the smiles on some of these kids faces when they come in for lunch for a home cooked meal.”

On Aug. 21, the stage was set under “Big Blue,” the monster crane that towers over the shipyard, visible for miles, with “Newport News Shipbuilding” emblazoned across it.

Directly behind the stage: a 960 t mass of yellow and green metal.

Because carriers are built in modules – assembled component by component, like big Lego pieces – it won’t actually be the Kennedy’s keel that is hoisted by the crane and moved into the adjacent dry dock.

It will be that yellow and green mass of metal, part of one of two engine rooms on the carrier.

Retired Rear Adm. Earl Yates, 91, the first commanding officer of the first Kennedy carrier, will give the order to the crane operator. That would be David Rushing, who has worked at the shipyard for 39 years, 20 of them as Big Blue’s operator.

Perched 200 feet up, in a yellow, 8-by-10 foot cab at the top of the crane, Rushing is no stranger to events like today’s: It will be his

fifth carrier keel-laying, after those for the John C. Stennis, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Gerald R. Ford.

“It’s a big milestone for us, and we’re excited about it, but it’s what we do every day,” he said.

“It’s a near-capacity lift,” he added, citing the crane’s ability to move more than 1,000 t.

Immediately before the engineroom component is lifted, the keel will be “authenticated” by the welding of Caroline Kennedy’s initials – “CBK” – onto a roughly half-inchthick, 8-by-12 inch steel plate that will become part of the ship.

Asked whether he might be a little nervous doing this in front of a packed house, welder Leon Walston, a shipyard employee for 13 years, was honest: “Yes, sir.”

He’s done several trial runs.

“It’s not too difficult,” he said, adding that all he has to do is follow the dots indented in the plate’s surface, outlining the initials.

Among those watching will be John Bloom. He’s a nuclear engineer at the Newport News yard, where his work supports both of the Ford-class carriers.

Thirty years ago, he was a young Navy officer on the first John F. Kennedy, on which he served from 1985 to 1989.

He was aboard when two Virginia Beach-based F-14s shot down two Libyan MiG fighters over the Mediterranean Sea in January 1989. He was in his office, below deck, when he got the news.

“I was stunned,” he said, adding that everybody was in a state of shock at first, which quickly turned to jubilation.

Not long afterward, he said, Tshirts became available on the ship: “JFK 2, Libya 0.”

Today’s keel-laying has been long anticipated. The $3.35 billion contract for the detail design and construction of the Kennedy’s new iteration had been expected in September 2013 but was awarded two months ago.

After costs on the Ford ballooned by 22 percent, the Navy slowed things down.

The Kennedy, 13 percent of which is already built, is scheduled for delivery to the Navy in summer 2022.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM MEDICAL IDENTITY THEFT

The theft of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) from major retailers, financial institutions and the federal government has impacted large segments of the population and made headline news. More insidious and with profound consequences for patients, insurance and health care providers, is the theft of medical data. This privacy tip focuses on basic facts about medical identity theft and ways you can protect yourself. Please note that the subject of medical privacy is complex. It is guided

by Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Department of Health and Human Services and state laws.

What is medical identity theft? Medical identity theft occurs when someone steals your medical data, such as your name, Social Security number (SSN), and/or medical insurance identity number to obtain medical goods or services, or to fraudulently submit billings to Medicare or private health care insurers. Medical data may also include your medical diagnoses, health insurance information, and medical history.

Medical identity theft can disrupt your life, damage your credit rating, and be life threatening if the wrong information is posted to your personal medical record.

How big is the problem? According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, health care has been the most common area for data breaches in the past three years. medical identity theft was up about 21 percent between 2013 and 2014 and last year, about 2.3 million Americans were victims. In the Fifth Annual Study on medical identity theft by the Ponemon Institute, 10 percent of medical identity theft victims experienced misdiagnosis because of fraud related errors in their medical records and 11 percent of victims faced treatment delays. In the same study, 45 percent of survey respondents reported that medical identity theft affected their reputation, mainly because of embarrassment due to disclosure of sensitive personal health conditions. Nineteen percent of respondents believe the theft caused them to miss out on career opportunities.

Three percent say it resulted in the loss of employment.

How is medical data stolen? For many years, the primary cause of medical identity theft was through the loss or theft of computers. In 2014, the leading cause was attributed to cyber-attacks. Medical identity theft may also be the result of an employee who is authorized access to medical data but removes or uses the data for fraudulent purposes.

What do thieves do with your medical data? Thieves know there is a significant market of uninsured or underinsured individuals willing to pay for bootlegged medical data. As an example, health insurance information on the black market sells for $60 to $70 as opposed to a dollar for a credit card number. Medical data can be used to obtain government or private health care, prescription medicines and medical equipment. Thieves can also combine a patient number with a false

health provider number and file bogus claims with insurers. Because medical identity theft is often not immediately identified, fraud can continue over a long period of time. The Ponemon Institute study cited that the average victim didn’t find out about the identity theft until three months after it happened.

Additionally, since most medical data includes the SSN and other nonmedical PII, thieves may commit financial account fraud, making charges, and depleting active credit or bank accounts. Thieves may open new credit card accounts in the victim’s name.

When thieves use the cards and do not pay the bills, the delinquent accounts appear on their victim’s credit report.

The thieves may change the billing address for a credit card so that the victim no longer receives bills, and then run up charges on the account. It may be some time before the victim realizes there’s a problem because the bills are being sent to a different address.

How do you minimize the risk of medical identity fraud? The following are best practices gleaned from a variety of recognized sources.

■ Before providing your SSN or any PII, understand how the information will be used and shared.

■ Use a cross cut shredder to dispose of all documents with PII. ■ Review your credit report each quarter.

■ Request a list of benefits paid in your name from your health provider, each year.

■ Place outgoing mail in collection boxes (not mailbox) or the U.S. Post Office.

■ Keep firewall, virus, and spyware software programs up to date.

■ Password protect all files containing PII using a strong password of eight characters or more containing capital letters, numeric, and special characters.

■ Never use PII (e.g., names of children, spouse) as answers to your security questions for online accounts.

■ Review bank and credit card statements carefully.

■ Never open internet links you are not familiar with.

■ Don’t give out PII on the phone or in an email unless you initiated the contact.

■ Consider using a medical identity monitoring service that alert you whenever there is a health care transaction on your account.

■ Minimize posting PII to social media accounts and follow strict privacy protocols.

How do you know if you are a victim of medical identity theft?

■ Review of your Explanation of Benefits (EOB), noting that not all medical services were actually provided to you.

■ Receipt of a letter from a collection agency claiming that you have unpaid medical bills.

■ Receipt of a fraudulent tax return which claims a medical deduction for services you did not receive.

■ Review of your credit reports which show delinquent medical bills

that have been reported to the credit reporting agencies.

■ Review of your medical records which contain misinformation caused by human error or identity theft.

■ If you are a victim of medical identity theft or fraud, file a police report in your place of residence and obtain a copy of the report.

Note: According to the Ponemon Institute study, a review of the EOB is one of the best ways to determine if you are a victim of medical identity theft.

Under HIPPA: ■ You are entitled to know what is in your medical records. Request copies of your medical records from any health care provider. If the provider denies you access to your medical records after 30 days of your written request, you have the right to file a complaint with the Office for Civil Rights in the Department of Health and Human Services.

Note: HIPAA does not prohibit providers from charging a reasonable fee for copying records.

You may request an accounting of entities that your health care provider gave your medical data to and may contain the same errors that exist in the original health care provider’s medical records in your name. The original health care provider must notify the other providers of the mistakes in the records they sent.

Useful information: ■ Obtain a free credit report: Only one website is authorized to fill orders for the free annual credit report you are entitled to under law – annualcreditreport.com You need to provide your name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth. If you have moved in the last two years, you may have to provide your previous address. To maintain the security of your file, each nationwide credit reporting company may ask you for some information that only you would know, like the amount of your monthly mortgage payment. Each company may ask you for different information because the information each has in your file may come from different sources.

Corps personnel serving Sailors, Marines and their families. The Corps was established in 1912, and a few years later, had an immediate impact during World War I when 30 dental surgeon assistants first deployed with the Marines.

“Since World War I, the Dental Corps has been a part of every wartime effort, and has grown significantly in strength and numbers,” wrote the Navy surgeon general, Vice Adm. Matthew L. Nathan. “Today, the Dental Corps continues to ensure high operational readiness.

They serve on the battlefield and aboard ships, performing medical duties beyond the scope of a typical dental practice. They are truly capable of providing world-class dental care, anytime, anywhere.”

In his letter, Rear Adm. Stephen Pachuta, chief of the Dental Corps, recognized the integral role his Corps has had on Navy Medicine and supporting operations around the globe.

“On this special day, let us celebrate the past, present and future members of our Corps and reflect upon our legacy and faithful service to the nation,” the admiral wrote. “Your ability to provide unwavering care on land and sea epitomizes what it means to be a Navy Medicine leader and professional. As new missions and opportunities arise for the Navy and Marine Corps, I am confident the Dental Corps will successfully meet any and all challenges.”

During his remarks, Capt. Darin K. Via, commanding officer of NMCP, highlighted the capabilities of the more than 100 Dental Corps officers and civilian dental staff at NMCP and its branch health clinics, who support the dental readiness of the fleet.

“We have every dental subspecialty represented here at NMCP and three graduate programs,” Via said.

“There is nothing in this area of responsibility that the fleet could ask for, that you aren’t ready for. Thank you, congratulations, and happy birthday.”

The ceremony concluded with the cutting of a cake topped with a cake-filled tooth and dental instruments made with frosting. The most senior and junior dental officers present, Capt. Christopher Cobb and Lt. Melanie Pommer, were selected for the honor of cutting the cake.

The Navy Dental Corps was established Aug. 22, 1912, with an Act of Congress that was later signed by President Howard Taft. The Secretary of the Navy was authorized to appoint no more than 30 acting assistant dental surgeons to the Medical Department. Six years after the Dental Corps was founded, the U.S. entered World War I, and the Dental Corps expanded from 35 to more than 500 personnel, including 124 dentists commissioned in the regular Navy.

Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Sailors interacted with visitors from the inside of an aquarium tank at the Kansas City Sea Life Aquarium, Aug. 20-21.

“When you’re in the usual military city nobody thinks twice about it,” said Senior Chief Explosive Ordnance Disposal Roy Vanek, assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group (EODGRU) 1. “But, here it’s been great, people are extremely friendly and very apprecia-

tive of the military.”

Sailors assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 3 and EODGRU 1, both homeported in Coronado, California, performed six dives over the two-day event.

The special dives were part of events planned during Kansas City Navy Week, which coincides with the performance of the U.S. Navy flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels, at the Kansas City Aviation Expo and runs through, Aug. 23.

While in the aquarium the Sailors played tic-tac-toe, wrote messages and interacted with guests.

“It’s neat how he interacted with the kids and made it so special,” said Dawn Tinklepaugh, from Leavenworth, Kansas. “My son really enjoyed beating him at tic-tac-toe, he was such a good sport.”

Besides playing tic-tac-toe, Tinklepaugh and her children wrote a message to Vanek, thanking him for his service and explaining that her husband was currently deployed in Afghanistan.

“She wrote us a big letter, and that’s why I saluted her. I’m glad that we could make her day,” said Vanek.

TRICARE pharmacy rules changing for maintenance, brand-name drugs

TRICARE beneficiaries who take certain brand-name medications on a regular basis will be required to fill prescriptions at a military treatment facility or through a mail-in program beginning Oct. 1, a Defense Health Agency (DHA) official said.

George Jones, DHA’s pharmacy operations division chief, said the new policy does not apply to active-duty troops, overseas beneficiaries, nursinghome residents and those with other health insurance that has a prescription drug program.

In certain circumstances, he added, some beneficiaries might be waived from the program on an individual basis.

The brand name, regularly used, or “maintenance” medications could include those to treat chronic conditions such as blood pressure or cholesterol issues, Jones explained.

Generic medications are not affected by the new policy, he said.

“Based on estimates, the program is expected to save beneficiaries $16.5 million in reduced copays, and projected Defense Department savings is $88 million during the first year,” he said.

A pilot program on the new pharmacy initiative was conducted in 2014, and it was “very successful,” he added.

“It was very well received by beneficiaries and met reductions in beneficiary-put-ofpocket costs and reduced costs to the government,” said Jones.

TRICARE pharmacy beneficiaries who will be affected will receive a letter from TRICARE in early to mid-September, with instructions on make the transition from retail pharmacies to a military pharmacy or the Express Scripts mail-in program, he said.

Those with questions about medications in the brand name maintenance category can call Express Scripts customer service at (877) 363-1303 or look up the drug online at TRICARE’s website.

To my mother, a first grade teacher for 30 years, every day was an opportunity to make a difference in the life of some squirmy, rag tag, grubby little six-year-old. And cussing, therefore, was out of the question.

Other than an occasional cathartic “Damn!” (considered quite proper in her home state of Kentucky) my mother rarely uttered a legitimate swear word. When frustrated, she would sometimes begin to form the “sh” sound, but just as we thought she was about to emit a well-known expletive, the word would morph into “SHHugar!” or “SHHoot!” or a long string of biblical characters such as “SHHadrach, Meshach, and Abednego!”

Although she flirted with minor cuss words, there was one word that would never, and I mean never, pass over my mother’s tangerine tinted lips: The “F-word.”

Nowadays the F-word has, like other formerly risqué endeavors such as tattoos and visible bra straps, become rather commonplace. It’s all over the premium channels, movie screens, Internet, radios and workplaces. Modern society has become de-sensitized to swearing over the last couple of decades, but back in the 70s and 80s when I was a kid, the F-word was considered taboo.

As far as my mother was concerned, the F-word was not an appropriate form of verbal communication. Whatever emotional cleansing or free expression might be gleaned from blurting that particular cuss word was outweighed by one’s ethical obligation to civilization.

Having grown up under my mother’s influence, I never really took to cussing either.

“Pardon my French,” a woman in my writer’s group whispered to me last week after she’d told a particularly expressive story punctuated by the F-word. In my writers’ group, everyone but me swears regularly, but there was no need for her to apologize. I get it. To many people in our modern world, cuss words effectively communicate a particular level of anger, annoyance, surprise or frustration. These words flow naturally from their lips and pens as a form of free expression.

However, when I swear, it comes out as immature as a seventh-grader on the middle

school bus, despite the fact that I’m 49 years old. It’s not that I’ve lived a sheltered life; I am the wife of a Navy man after all (many cuss words have nautical origins, you know) and have worked in offices where the F-word was casually batted about by both men and women like whiffle balls. I’ve often felt pressured to use the F-word to fit in, but I’ve never been able to make it work for me.

I must admit, there have been times when I’ve really wanted to blurt out something foul – on the highway, during arguments with my husband, or when trying to get the cap off of a bottle of ibuprofen when I’m particularly hormonal – and wished there was an effective alternative to blurting the F-word.

Even my mother once sought her own alternative to the F-word.

It was 1979, and I was watching my parents argue at our kitchen table. Nothing heated, just a garden-variety marital disagreement.

While I sat spreading peanut butter on saltines, my mother gave up arguing, expelled a heavy sigh, and went back to silently scribbling in her sketchbook.

My father got the final word, but my mother didn’t seem bothered. She calmly finished her drawing, got up, and excused herself from the room, leaving her sketchpad propped on the napkin caddy.

Back then, we all knew my mother would never say the F-word, much less make the infamous symbolic hand gesture for it. But, on this particular day, she found a way to express her feelings without compromising her ethical standards. There on her sketchpad, for all the world to see, was a perfect replica of a human hand – skin, knuckles, fingernails and all – flipping my father “The Bird.”

That day, I learned a few things from my mother’s unique example. That there are always alternatives to swearing. That I should weigh my options before letting any expletives fly. And that, if there’s is a way to swear with class, my mother had definitely put her finger on it.

Six-year-old Declan Alexander was recently honored as a Swamp Fox Pilot for a Day by the 169th Fighter Wing, receiving a hero’s welcome from the moment he arrived on base.

Declan and his father Brian Alexander were guests of the South Carolina Air National Guard on Aug. 15 as part of the Pilot for a Day program, which allows children with disadvantages or debilitating illnesses to experience the life of a fighter pilot.

“Pilot for a Day allows us to reach out to the community, make community bonds and make a difference in someone’s life,” said Air Force 1st Lt. Cody May, a fighter pilot assigned to the 157th Fighter Squadron and Declan’s host for the day.

The tour, led by May, began with Declan receiving a custom pilot’s flight suit from the aircrew flight equipment shop. He was later escorted to the end of the runway to watch F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft land and was greeted with thumbs-up and well wishes from the airmen he met on base.

Lifetime Memories “It is hard to express how cool it is to have everyone take time out of their day to set all this up and show us around and create lasting memories,” Brian Alexander said. “It really is an amazing experience. There really are not words to express how much of a big deal this is for him and for us.”

Declan displayed a big smile while sitting in the cockpit of an F-16 bearing his name on the side. He also enjoyed spraying the water cannon from McEntire’s largest fire truck while touring the fire department, Brian Alexander said.

“Getting to ride in a fire truck and getting to sit in a fighter jet are two things you don’t ever get to do,” he said. “Those were definitely a ton of fun and put a smile on his face.”

The Pilot for a Day program helps a child and the child’s family to gain a memory of a lifetime, and is just as important to the Swamp Fox family who welcomed the young hero.

May said the most important part of the Pilot for a Day program is it has the ability to take a family’s mind off of an illness by allowing them to experience something that very few people will ever get to experience.

“I really enjoyed being able to make a difference in someone’s life,” May added.

The 169th Fighter Wing has supported the Pilot for a Day program for nearly two decades.

The first Recruit Honor Graduate Ribbons will be awarded to recruits during their pass-in-review rehearsal Aug. 20. The recruits who receive the ribbon will be authorized to wear it during recruit graduation on Aug. 21.

To reward recruits for their superb performance during basic military training, the Recruit Honor Graduate Ribbon will provide a physical recognition of the Sailor’s outstanding achievements in academics, physical fitness, recruit leadership and commitment to the Navy core values of honor, courage and commitment.

No more than three percent of the graduates from each training group will be designated as Honor Graduates and no retroactive awards are authorized.

In order of precedence, the ribbon shall rank immediately after the Navy Ceremonial Duty Ribbon.

The first 15 recruits were awarded the new Recruit Honor Graduate Ribbon during their pass-in-review (PIR) rehearsal in the Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall at Recruit Training Command (RTC), Aug. 20.

The Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus approved the award to recognize initial accession enlisted personnel who demonstrate superior performance throughout basic military training in the areas of academics, physical readiness, recruit leadership, and commitment to the Navy Core Values.

“RTC recognizes multiple top performing recruits at graduation, but now the recognition is outwardly visible on an honoree’s uniform,” said Rear Adm. Stephen Evans, commander of Navy Service Training Command (NSTC), who oversees the Navy’s only boot camp. “Wearing the Recruit Honor Graduate Ribbon will be a visible sign to peers and superiors at the recipient’s future duty stations that the member demonstrated extraordinary excellence and leadership potential during basic military training and is capable of accelerated and increased leadership positions within the fleet.”

Recruits earning the ribbon will be authorized to wear it during their PIR graduation ceremony. No more than three percent of graduates from each training group will be designated as Honor Graduates.

“The ribbon is given to recruits who excel in every aspect of their training at RTC,”

said Chief Navy Counselor Tongela Freeman, a recruit division commander (RDC) at RTC. “Their commitment and performance motivates their shipmates within the division to succeed. These recruits are typically the ones that will take time from their training to help others and are key in bringing the division together to work as a team.”

Seaman Recruit (SR) Joseph Agbingpadua entered boot camp on June 28 and was one of the 15 recruits who were the first recipients of the Recruit Honor Graduate Ribbon. According to Agbingpadua, it was an honor to be selected among his shipmates receiving the ribbon.

“It is special to me to think that in the 239 years of the Navy’s existence, I’m the first to receive the award out of boot camp,” said Agbingpadua. “Through the past eight weeks, my philosophy has been ‘Good, better, and best; never rest until your good is better and your better is best.’ I wouldn’t have received this award if it wasn’t for the leadership from my RDCs and the support from my shipmates in my division.”

In addition to Agbingpadua, the other new Sailors awarded the ribbon include: SR Jamie Murray, SR Matthew Jones, SR Brittany Walker, SR Renata Choi, SR Carlin Hatcher, SR Richard Cassube III, SR Stephen McGahey, SR Allison ReveraMedina, SR Garrett Firestone, SR Jeremy Cryer, SR Hunter Morrow, SR Bethany

Vikowski, SR Timothy Seybold and SR James Bell III. RTC is primarily responsible for conducting the initial Navy orientation and training of new recruits. The command is commonly referred to as “boot camp” or “recruit training.”

Boot camp is approximately eight weeks, and all enlistees into the U.S. Navy begin their careers at the command. Training includes physical fitness, seamanship, firearms familiarization, firefighting and shipboard damage control, lessons in Navy heritage and core values, teamwork and discipline.

RTC Great Lakes is the Navy’s only basic training location, and is known as the “Quarterdeck of the Navy.” Today, approximately 38,000 recruits graduate annually from RTC and begin their Navy careers.

Rear Adm. Evans and his NSTC staff are headquartered in Building 1; the historic clock tower building on Naval Station Great Lakes. NSTC oversees 98 percent of initial officer and enlisted accessions training for the Navy.

NSTC also oversees the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) at more than 160 colleges and universities; Officer Training Command at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island; Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) and Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) citizenship development programs at more than 600 high schools worldwide.

Ocean State family touches the maritime world

NEWPORT, R.I.

Only Hurricane Bob could stop the streak of hospitality and openness the Kempenaar family has been extending to the Navy and international officers attending Naval War College’s (NWC) Naval Command College (NCC) over the last 60 years.

Only one year, 1991, since the first one was held in 1955, has the NCC Family Clambake been cancelled.

“We couldn’t do it. There were trees fallen all over the yard and we couldn’t find enough space to park the cars,” said John Kempenaar, grandson of Esau Kempenaar, who started the annual clambakes that are held each year on the third Thursday in August in Middletown, Rhode Island.

There were 601 guests registered to attend the feast held Aug. 20, including the 49 senior naval officers from 47 different nations, their spouses and family members who were the focus of the festivity.

It all started with the current family patriarch, Rocky Kempenaar’s paternal grandfather Esau Kempenaar, who had three sons and two daughters. Esau came over from Holland in 1908 with his wife Saime and started a family that included three sons and two daughters (all now deceased).

To this day, as it was during the first Kempenaar Family Clambake, the event is truly a family affair.

“I remember coming out as a kid and having to work the bakes every year, said John Kempenaar while reminiscing about this family tradition. “We used to have two bakes a year back when I was a kid. They were expensive to have and when they first started holding them in the late 50’s it would take three days to get the coals going, break out the spit and have everything ready. There were a total of 26 people at the first bake.”

Esau had befriended a naval officer.

He liked to throw parties, so that’s how it started.

It was as simple as that.

The tradition has been passed down from generation to generation, but it never crossed anyone’s mind to stop holding them when Esau died. Then his children passed away. For the past several years Rocky Kempenaar and his cousin John Kempenaar have been at the helm. Great granddaughter Kirby Ashworth, smiling and welcoming everyone, was running around between registration tables and the stove area, so family tradition appears to be continuing.

“This family has been generous to everyone,” said Middletown Town Councilman Henry Lombardi, referring to the Kempenaars. Lombardi has been a resident of Middletown since his freshman year in high school and currently serves on the Middletown Town Council with Rocky. “Some families are strong enough to keep traditions like this alive,” he said.

The event runs like a mess meal on a large amphibious assault ship (well, perhaps more like a Tiger cruise, but you

get the point). More than six hundred guests and staff gathered in a field off of Valley Road in Middletown. The place is very well manicured with a couple of volley ball courts set up, ample parking on the lawn, a nice restroom facility with running water and rows and rows of tables and folding chairs under tents.

Bushels of steamers; hundreds of loaves of brown bread and ears of corn; nearly 200 pounds of potatoes, and of course, over 600 lobsters gave their lives to the cause of this celebration of patriotism, friendship and community.

This is a rain or shine event. You don’t fire up the stoves and ovens and buy 600 lobsters just to postpone – unless, of course, there is a hurricane.

“This is an incredible tradition your family began 60 years ago,” said Rear Adm. P. Gardner Howe III, NWC president, prior to the “duty section” of young local high school students coming out with all of the food.

“The CNO, commandant of the Marine Corps and commandant of the Coast Guard signed a Maritime Strategy for the U.S. that talks about the Global Maritime Network. There is no way that any one nation can address the challenges of the world alone – the only way to do it is through strong partnerships and strong allies across the globe. These alliances are built on relationships. Thank you to the Kempenaar Family and the good people of Rhode Island for setting conditions for some of these critical relationships to be built,” Howe said.

Following Howe’s remarks, a certificate of recognition sent by Gov. Gina Raimondo was read aloud. The certificate welcomed the NCC class of 2016 and declared them all honorary citizens of Rhode Island while in the Ocean State.

Then began the wonderful tradition where the students are all introduced, along with their spouses, in alphabetical order, by nation, with Cmdr. Khemissi Rachi from Algeria starting off this year’s class.

“On behalf of the students of the class of 2016, we are proud to be a part of the friendship between the Kempenaar Family and the Naval War College,” said NCC class of 2016 Vice President Cmdr.

Then the crowd could take no more talk because the smell of hot butter and warm bread was becoming too much to bear.

The Kempenaar family faces may have changed over the years, but their legacy of generosity continues to touch thousands of U.S. and international military officer’s throughout the world.

“It was 23 years ago this year that I came here as a student at the war college. Many of my classmates and I still reminisce about that night whenever we get together. Thank you so much for continuing to host us,” said retired Adm. Guillermo Barrera to John Kempenaar prior to sitting down for his Family Clambake.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced Aug. 19 that the next Independenceclass littoral combat ship will be named USS Oakland (LCS 24).

The ship will be named to honor the long-standing history its namesake city has had with the Navy.

The future USS Oakland will be the third naval ship to bear the name. The first, commissioned in 1918, was largely used to transport cargo; the second, commissioned in 1942 during the height of

World War II, was only in service for seven years, but was key in many anti-aircraft missions in places such as Pearl Harbor, Marshall Islands, Iwo Jima, Peleliu, Okinawa, Rota, Spain and Pagan, Guam. After the war, Oakland performed two duty patrols off the coast of China before being decommissioned.

A fast, agile surface combatant, the LCS provides the required war-fighting capabilities and operational flexibility to execute a variety of missions in areas such as mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare.

Chief select uses training, saves child’s life

A local Sailor, assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 8, received numerous awards during a ceremony in the Public Works courtyard Aug. 13, for his heroic actions, which saved a child’s life.

Chief (select) Hospital Corpsman Charles Geiger, an independent duty corpsman, was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, an American Red Cross (ARC) life-saving award, and a plaque from the Seabees, for saving a child’s life in Sanlcar de Barrameda the evening of July 20.

“We’re here today to honor Chief (select) Geiger for the indelible impact he has had on the Public Works Department and the greater Naval Station Rota family,” said Cmdr. Joe Harder, officer in charge, Naval Facilities Engineering Command. “[He] effectively applied his skills and training in a situation that

was off base, and somewhat frantic, and ended up saving the life of a child. It’s an act where someone responds intuitively with the training and character that they possess.

Heroism doesn’t require any further description; it’s selfevident.”

On July 20, Geiger overheard his neighbors calling for assistance and his dogs started barking. He ran across the street and discovered his neighbor’s 2-yearold child was unconscious and not breathing. He assessed the situation and gave the child cardiopulmonary resuscitation until the child started breathing and his pulse came back.

Rota’s ARC was on hand for the ceremony and presented Geiger with a Life Saver award.

“The reason the Red Cross wanted to participate today is to thank [Mr.] Geiger for two things,” said Jon Glenn, Rota’s ARC station manager. “The first is the action he took that day. That speaks for itself. The second thing is

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve spent over thirtyâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;two years in the service and not once was a golden shovel necessary for me to succeed in my mission,â&#x20AC;? said Capt. Dennis R. D. Boyer, commanding ofďŹ cer of Naval Station (NAVSTA) Newport.

Boyer was referring to the painted shovels presented for the ground-breaking ceremony â&#x20AC;&#x153;ďŹ rst digâ&#x20AC;? for the start of construction for a new $48 million modern 200-room Navy Gateway Inns and Suites (NGIS) transient lodging facility.

Taking care of those assigned to work on NAVSTA Newport and executing tasks assigned, while being the best stewards of our resources, are two of Boyerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s priority goals since assuming command in September 2014 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this innovative undertaking hits the mark on both of these priorities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I assumed command following a period of rapid growth here on the base as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) deci-

sions made in 2005,â&#x20AC;? Boyer said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a result of some of those BRAC decisions, student growth on the installation increased exponentially and thankfully there were folks here in Newport paying close attention.â&#x20AC;?

Boyer went on in his remarks to speciďŹ cally thank former Commanding OfďŹ cer retired Capt. Mike Poirier and former BRAC Project Manager Barbara Goldberg for their leadership and support throughout the justiďŹ cation and funding process for the new lodging.

The funding for this new facility truly meant a new way to do business for the Navy.

The construction funds did not come by way of congressional appropriations for military construction â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the project will be built using non-appropriated funds earned from room revenue from all Mid-Atlantic NGIS â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not just those at NAVSTA Newport.

Additionally, this is the largest non-appropriated funds (NAF) construction project ever awarded by the Navy and the ďŹ rst of its kind to be built as a NGIS hotel facility that will provide quality, affordable lodging services to our mobile military force.

In 2008, a study was compiled - justiďŹ cation of the need for a facility was veriďŹ ed and options for funding it were presented to region leadership. The option decided on was

for NGIS to raise the rates throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region on the then 5,000 room inventory and use those funds to build this new facility, improve the existing inventory and maintain the operations status quo.

On July 31, 2013, after ďŹ ve years of meetings, decision papers and various levels of approvals through the Department of Defense (DOD); Congress approved the NAF construction ďŹ scal year 2013 project listing that included this facility. While these funds were not from Congress, they still had to approve the NAF construction project.

This groundbreaking culminated almost seven years of work and brings a new NGIS to NAVSTA Newport and the Navy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Today we will send a message to our mili-

tary men and women and the DOD workforce that we intend to continue to create comfortable guest services for those we serve today and tomorrow,â&#x20AC;? said Norm Aurland, Regional Lodging program manager for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

NGIS provides lodging for ofďŹ cial travelers of the DOD on 69 locations worldwide.

The program maintains facilities for average occupancy and uses the local economy for all overďŹ&#x201A;ows that cannot be accommodated on the installations.

The academic year at the Naval War College (NWC) began with several events Aug. 17, including the Ethics Symposium, which aimed to instill an ethical base for incoming students.

The emphasis on ethics is part of the chief of naval operationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strategy for developing Navy leaders, outlined in his Navy Leader Development Strategy document, published in 2013.

Symposium speakers included Olenda E. Johnson, professor of strategic leadership, who gave a presentation titled, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fold in Your Mirrorsâ&#x20AC;?; Martin L. Cook, Stockdale chair of professional military ethics, who spoke on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Education as a Professional Ethical Obligationâ&#x20AC;?; and Rear Adm. P. Gardner Howe III, president of NWC, who discussed â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Ethical Foundation of the Military Profession.â&#x20AC;?

During Howeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presentation, he emphasized the importance of how Navy members see themselves. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is an operational imperative â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a war-ďŹ ghting imperative â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that we view our Navy, and that we view

ourselves, as professionals,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Howe went on to distinguish between organizations that are bureaucracies and those that are professions, saying that both types of structures serve well in different circumstances. He added that Navy leaders need to â&#x20AC;&#x153;ensure the overarching characteristic of the Navy is, and remains, that of a military profession,â&#x20AC;? and that â&#x20AC;&#x153;a bureaucratic organization wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t succeed in combat; a professional organization will.â&#x20AC;?

During Johnsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remarks, she told students to enjoy their upcoming educational journey and to embrace the new ideas and ways of thinking they will be exposed to during their time at the college. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The goal here is for you to strive to become an even better leader; to prepare for the more complex challenges of your next level of leadership, which require higher levels of decision making and involve more nuanced ethical dilemmas,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Johnson went on to point out that students must embrace a new mindset as they advance in their careers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The evolution into a strategic leader is less dependent upon past achievements or

During Cookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presentation, he reinforced the need for service members to meet ethical responsibilities as they advance in their careers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You, in this room, are the leaders and future leaders of the profession,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have the professional, ethical obligation as you rise in rank and responsibility, to grasp how all-encompassing professional ethics becomes.â&#x20AC;?

Cook went on to ask students to consider ethics throughout their time at NWC. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This year, recognize that much of what you study has a professional ethical dimension,â&#x20AC;? he added.

Reserve Sailors assigned to Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG) conducted a two-week training exercise and Battle EfďŹ ciency (Battle â&#x20AC;&#x153;Eâ&#x20AC;?) award ceremony in the Alameda, California area, in July.

More than 500 Sailors assigned to Navy Cargo Handling Battalion (NCHB) 14, in partnership with NCHB 5 and Airmen from Travis Air Force Base, participated in the training.

The joint exercise is an operational framework and focuses on the completion of NAVELSG unit level training requirements that include team training, unit level exercises, unit inspections, assessments and certiďŹ cations. NAVELSG battalions are responsible for providing trained, manned, and equipped forces to support Commander, Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group missions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These exercises play an important part for these reservists,â&#x20AC;? said Capt. Ed Moninger, commander Fifth Navy Expeditionary Logistics Regiment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The service members can perform in teams and with shipmates from other battalions.â&#x20AC;?

sitioning Forces, Joint Logistics over the shore operations, and maritime forces ashore, providing expeditionary cargo handling services for surface, air, and terminal operations, tactical fueling, and ordnance handling/reporting in support of worldwide naval, joint, interagency, and combined forces/organization.

It is the ďŹ rst time that this training has happened outside of an assessment environment where NCHB 14 and NCHB 5 trained together in the same environment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The training platform on the West Coast is exceptional for them to perform the mission and exercises in realistic environments,â&#x20AC;? said Moninger.

VIETNAM CNO visits three carriers HONORING OUR LOCAL VETERANS

It’s not often that you hear stories of people dropping out of college to enlist in the Army. It’s even rarer that you hear stories of people dropping out of college, enlisting in the Army and volunteering to serve in Vietnam. But that’s just what William Whitmore did.

“I was raised as a military dependent. My father was Air Force. We’d come home from church and Mom would fix a good Sunday meal and Dad would tell stories. He was a bombardier on the B-17s in WWII over Germany. I was always impressed with military. I think it was just a part of my heritage,” said Whitmore.

That heritage spurred him one morning in February of 1966 to get in his car and drive to the Army recruiting station that was located on Granby St. in Norfolk at the time.

“I walked in and the young man said ‘What can I do to help you?’ I said ‘I want to enlist.’ He said ‘What nt do you want to do?’ I said ‘I want s. airborne infantry, light weapons.

And I want to go to Vietnam.’ Andd he just got this grin from ear to ear,”” Whitmore laughs.

After enlisting, Whitmore reportedd Ft. Benning, Georgia, to complete boot ot camp and advanced infantry training. g.

He received orders to the 101st st Airborne, his dream assignment.t.

Despite a reassignment to the 173rdd Airborne before shipping out of Ft. Dixx later that summer, Whitmore wouldd end up spending his year in Vietnam m with A Company, 1st Battalion, 327thh Infantry, 1st Brigade of the 101st st Airborne, otherwise known as thee “Screaming Eagles.”

“We were the only company that at served in Vietnam that was adoptedd by a city in the U.S. because in December of 1967, Joe Artavia wrote his sister Linda about how low the morale was,” said Whitmore.

Linda made it her mission to get her brother’s unit adopted. On March 4, 1968, San Mateo, California, officially adopted the Screaming Eagles. On March 24, the Screaming Eagles walked in to an ambush and Whitmore was with Artavia when he was killed.

“We went back in 1988 and had a reunion in San Mateo. And we went to the national cemetery in San Francisco and went to Joe Artavia’s grave,” said Whitmore, choking up.

Whitmore would go on to receive three Bronze Stars while in country, two for valor and one for meritorious service, along with a Combat Infantryman Badge. One of the Bronze Stars he earned on a night in October of 1967. He, along with six other Soldiers, had been sent up a hill in an “observation post” position.

“We were set up on the side of a rock formation with an old tree at the top of the rocks. Unfortunately, nobody told others that we were there. When he got home, he finished his tour of duty and got out of the Army, a move he still regrets. He went back to work as a toll collector at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel before applying to, and being accepted by, the Virginia Beach Police. He spent the next five years as a patrolman and an officer in the traffic department and earned seven letters of commendation, including one from the FBI. After leaving the police force, he went into the insurance business, where he still works today.

He lives in Virginia Beach with his wife of fifteen years, who he proposed to in a Hooters on Oahu.

“I had qualified for a convention to Hawaii and she had never been. The convention was on the Big Island of Hawaii, but she had never been, so I took her to Oahu for three days. On Oahu, there’s a Hooters that overlooks the marina from Gilligan’s Island, where the boat left from. Well, I took her to Hooters, we love chicken wings, and I proposed to her at Hooters,” said Whitmore, smiling.

They ended up getting married only days later on the Big Island in the garden of a small church they found while exploring the island.

“I tell everybody that, when you get married in Hawaii, the vows are only good for seven years. You have to go back every seven years to renew your vows. So in 2007, we went back and we exchanged vows again, except this time, instead of in English, we exchanged vows in Hawaiian,” said Whitmore.

Members of the “Cooks From the Valley” organization treated Sailors from the aircraft carriers USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), USS George Washington (CVN 73), and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) to more than 12,000 fresh, NewYork steaks, Aug. 17, aboard Naval Base Coronado (NBC).

Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert also attended the picnic with Sailors from the three commands.

“People have asked me many times what my favorite thing was about being CNO, and the best parts are days like today,” said Greenert. “It’s so great to look out there into the crowd seeing everyone’s eyes. Seeing ball caps. Seeing backpacks; all the new chief selectees. And actually getting out there to meet all of you. It amazes me how this nation of ours can turn over generation after generation of people from all different backgrounds who are all united for the greater good of our country. It’s the real deal. This is all real business, and you are the tip of the spear.”

For Gregory Horn, a member of “Cooks From the Valley,” the trip was about celebrating the sacrifices and dedication of the men and women who serve the nation’s Navy.

“I’m so very happy to be able to return to my roots and give back to Sailors,” said Horn, who previously held the title of deputy chief of Chaplains during his naval career.

“It’s an incredible honor to be back on the pier right alongside these amazing men and women, and actually being able to repay them a bit for all the hard work they do.”

With the help and support of NBC personnel, “Cooks From the Valley” began preparations for the event days in advance by seasoning steaks and setting up tents and chairs for the massive crowd of hungry and grateful Sailors that would eventually engulf the pier.

“We were really fortunate to have the CNO come to show his appreciation to our Sailors and the Cooks From the Valley,” said Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Thurman McDowell, a Sailor assigned to the Ronald Reagan. “It really gave us all a sense of encouragement and a pat on the back for a job well done. The crews of these three ships are going through some big transitions and I really cannot express my gratitude to everyone involved in making today happen.”

Horn’s team catered to the crews of the three ships, feeding more than 8,400 Sailors.

“Cooks From the Valley”, established in 2002, is an organization comprised of philanthropic professionals who purchase highgrade steak out-of-pocket, travel to wherever military personnel are located, fire up the grill and prepare meals for service members free of charge. The organization is united by the common goal of showing appreciation and giving back to men and women in uniform.

Carl Vinson is currently undergoing a planned incremental availability period, while George Washington and Ronald Reagan are conducting a crew and equipment swap.

Once the swap is complete, George Washington will begin its transit to Norfolk, where it will prepare for its mid-life refueling and complex overhaul.

Ronald Reagan will proceed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility to serve as the fleet’s forward deployed naval forces aircraft carrier out of Yokosuka, Japan.

SECNAV NAMES VIRGINIACLASS SUBMARINE Secretary of the Navy Public Affairs BOISE, IDAHO

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus hosted a ship-naming ceremony today to announce that SSN 799, a Virginiaclass attack submarine, will bear the name USS Idaho.

The submarine will be named to honor the history its namesake state has with the Navy. Idaho is home to the former Farragut Naval Training Station, which was the second largest training facility in the world during World War II. From the early 1950s to the mid-1990s, the Naval Reactors Facility (NRF), located within the Idaho National Laboratory, trained nearly 40,000 Navy personnel in surface and submarine nuclear power plant operations with three nuclear propulsion prototypes including the first nuclear-powered submarine prototype, S1W. The facility continues to support the Navy by examining naval spent nuclear fuel and irradiated test specimens, which are used to develop new technology and to improve the cost-effectiveness of existing designs. And nearby, Lake Pend Oreille, the fifth deepest lake in the U.S., continues to conduct tests of large-scale submarine and surface ship prototypes in a setting with acoustic properties similar to that of the ocean.

commissioned in 1905, was a battleship that largely supported American Foreign Policy in Central America and conducted operations and exercises in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The third Idaho was a motorboat commissioned in 1917 that patrolled New Jersey and Pennsylvania harbors. The last Idaho was a New Mexicoclass battleship launched on June 30, 1917, and saw action in World War II. Virginia-class attack submarines provide the Navy with the capabilities required to maintain the nation's undersea supremacy well into the 21st century. They have enhanced stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities and special warfare enhancements that will enable them to meet the Navy's multi-mission requirements.

These submarines have the capability to attack targets ashore with highly accurate Tomahawk cruise missiles and conduct covert, longterm surveillance of land

areas, littoral waters or other sea-based forces. Other missions include anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare; mine delivery and minefield mapping. They are also designed for special forces delivery and support.

Each Virginia-class submarine weighs 7,800 tons and is 377 feet in length, has a beam of 34 feet and can operate at more than 25 knots submerged. They are designed with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the planned life of the boat, reducing lifecycle costs, while increasing underway time. The submarine will be built under a unique teaming agreement between General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) and Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding (HIINNS) wherein both companies build certain portions of each submarine and then alternate deliveries. Idaho will be delivered by GDEB located in Groton, Connecticut.

The events Blue Angels team members participated in throughout the week included the Captain’s Cup, the division’s pride run, a pizza party, and graduation.

“The best part of Captain’s Cup was that it brought our division even closer together,” said Seaman Recruit Marcella Garrett. “We worked together to push through these last few weeks, getting us to this point, and one step closer to the next part in our naval careers.”

Eight recruit divisions competed in 10 events at Captain’s Cup. The challenges required the recruits to put their skills to the test for the opportunity to win the Captain’s Cup trophy and a chance to display the Captain’s Cup flag during pass-in-review at graduation.

Division 267 placed first over all other integrated divisions.

“Having the Blue Angels supporting them, cheering them on, definitely made a dif-

ference,” said Aviation Structural Mechanic (Safety Equipment) 1st Class Matthew Smith, a division 267 recruit division commander (RDC).

“You could see the extra motivation in the recruits.”

Throughout the week, Blue Angels team members interacted, worked out, and mentored the soon-to-be Sailors of Division 267.

One special event both recruits and Blue Angels team members said they cherished was “Recruit Heaven.” The event includes things normally off-limits to recruits, including movies, video games, and food not served in the galley.

“To get the chance to spend quality time with the recruits outside of their normal routine was very rewarding,” said Logistics Specialist 1st Class Ann Godwin. “It will forever be remembered as one of the most rewarding experiences of my Navy career.”

The following morning the Blue Angels accompanied Division 267 at the track for their “Pride Run.” They ran

approximately two miles in formation while singing cadence.

“To go back to Great Lakes after 12 years is very humbling,” said Aviation Support Equipmentman 1st Class Ryan Hooks, Blue Angels #2 crew chief. “To have the opportunity to see and motivate the next generation of Sailors who are going to be our replacements inspires me and reminds me that you never forget from where you came.”

The evening before Division 267’s graduation, the Blue Angels shared a meal and presented the RDCs and recruits with Blue Angels challenge coins.

“I still remember, to this day, when I got my first Navy coin,” said Aviation Structural Mechanic 1st Class Megan Stricklin. “To be able to be on the opposite side and give a Sailor their first coin is beyond humbling.”

Recruit Division 267 started the basic training process June 29 and graduated Aug. 14, along with eight other divisions.

Vanek said there are only 2,000 EOD Sailors in the entire Navy, so it was a rare opportunity for them to be able to participate in the Kansas City Navy Week.

“This is not our usual TAD [temporary assigned duty] trip

to go dive in the aquarium and talk to kids. Usually it’s train, train, and more training and long hours and hard work, but that’s why we do the job.”

Navy Weeks are designed to educate Americans on the importance of naval service and help them understand the investment they make in their Navy. They are held in cities that might not otherwise see Sailors at work on a regular basis.

Kansas City is one of 12 cities selected to host a 2015 Navy Week, which is coordinated by the Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO). NAVCO is a unit tasked with enhancing the Navy’s brand image in areas with limited exposure to the Navy.

The agreement, signed last month, is the largest purchase of renewable energy ever made by a federal entity.

Adding solar power to naval installations will help diversify the DON’s shore energy portfolio and provide long-term cost stability, which ultimately contributes to the DON’s energy security priorities. In May 2014, the DON and Western signed an interagency agreement that allowed Western to issue a request for proposal (RFP) and then select Sempra U.S. Gas & Power’s Mesquite Solar 3 project, a solar plant located 60 miles west of Phoenix, Arizona. More than 650,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels on groundmounted, horizontal single-axis trackers will be installed, providing a third of the energy needed to power 14 Navy and Marine Corps installations. Construction of Mesquite Solar 3 begins this month and Sempra U.S. Gas & Power expects the project to be complete by the end of 2016.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, who hosted the ceremony with Western and Sempra U.S. Gas & Power, emphasized the importance of the agreement.

“The collaboration on Mesquite Solar 3 is a triumph of innovative problem solving, and will help to increase the DON’s energy security by diversifying our power portfolio and improving energy efficiency,” said Mabus. “This agreement is also projected to save the DON at least $90 million over the life of the project.”

In addition to the energy security benefits to the DON, the Mesquite Solar 3 project will help the 14 installations comply with California’s Renewable Portfolio Standard. At 210 MW, the solar facility will contribute 21 percent of the power needed to meet Mabus’ goal of bringing one gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy into procurement by the end of 2015.

“We are pleased to partner with both the DON and Western to help contribute to the DON’s renewable energy portfolio and to expand out Mesquite Solar com-

plex,” said Patti Wagner, president and CEO of Sempra U.S. Gas & Power. “The development of Mesquite Solar 3 will continue to stimulate the local economy in the region and would not have been possible without the strong support of neighboring communities, regulators and local, state and federal officials.”

Western’s Senior Vice President and Desert Southwest Regional Manager, Ronald Moulton also commended the project. “The powerful collaboration between all parties made this project possible. We look forward to facilitating similar agreements with other federal agencies, helping them meet their renewable energy goals, and building more partnerships for powering the energy frontier,” he said.

In 2009, Congress mandated that the Department of Defense (DOD) produce or procure 25 percent of total DOD facility energy from renewable sources by 2025, with each service responsible for generating a portion of that renewable energy. Mabus accelerated that goal, directing the DON to procure one GW of renewable energy by the end of 2015.

With the signing of Mesquite 3 (210 MW), the recent groundbreaking at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, (17 MW) last month and upcoming groundbreaking at Kings Bay, Georgia, (42 MW), the Navy is on track to meet that goal with a total 1.2 GW of projects in the pipeline.

U.S. SAILORS IN KOREA HELP CHILDREN AT HISTORIC HOME

Active duty and reserve Sailors stationed in Korea continued a longstanding community partnership by volunteering at the Aikwangwon Home and School for the Physically and Mentally Disabled, Aug. 22.

Aikwangwon, which means “the garden of love and light,” was founded during the Korean War in 1952 and began with seven orphans. It has transformed during the past six decades into a complex that houses 240 resident

children and adults of all ages with disabilities, while providing academic courses and learning opportunities.

“Our residents will remember all the joy, happiness and laughter from today,” said Woojung Lee, executive director for Aikwangwon. “Even though you may speak a different language, today is special to the children because their [U.S.] Navy friends came to visit.”

The visit began with Aikwangwon residents conducting several traditional performances including a drum concert and vocal choir recital. After the introductory event, the volunteers were divided into four groups and paired up

with resident partners to play games, perform arts and crafts, dance, and play music.

Operations Specialist 1st Class Gregory Ellzey, a reserve Sailor temporarily in Korea in support of the joint exercise Ulchi Freedom Guardian, said he was honored to be a guest at Aikwangwon and hopes this visit will have a lasting positive impact for the children and their relationship with the Navy.

“I will remember this place and I hope the kids remember our group, the Navy and know that we are a good people,” he added.

GFW to debut in Richmond this weekend at The Diamond

Global Force Wrestling (GFW), an International professional wrestling company that had their inaugural event earlier this summer, is making their Richmond, Virginia, debut on Aug. 29. GFW may be new to the game, but their founder, International pro-wrestling star Jeff Jarrett, has had decades of experience in the industry. Jarrett is best known for his time in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), World Championship Wrestling (WCW), and for founding Total Nonstop Action/Impact Wrestling.

This event, co-promoted by local wrestling company Ground Xero Wrestling, will be taking place at The Diamond baseball stadium â&#x20AC;&#x201C; home of the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Already advertised is a special appearance by WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash.

To laymen, the twin mounds of ďŹ&#x201A;esh resting on Chef Jesse Wykleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cutting board looked like random hunks of meat.

They were anything but.

The top-grade, fat-strafed, imported Japanese Wagyu beef runs about $80 a pound and is so rareďŹ ed that it arrived at Zoes Steak & Seafood restaurant at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront with a certiďŹ cate of authenticity and the inky nose print of the steer.

The beef is just one star on the menu that Wykle, 33, created for his tonight cooking debut at the venerable James Beard House in New York, headquarters of the nonproďŹ t James Beard Foundation (JBF) and former home of the late chef, deemed the â&#x20AC;&#x153;dean of American cookeryâ&#x20AC;? by The New York Times.

For chefs, receiving an invitation to cook at the house â&#x20AC;&#x153;is a rite of passage,â&#x20AC;? said Director of House Programming Izabela Wojcik. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cooking in New York, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the ultimate audience. Wykle said, while rubbing fresh-made rosemary salt into the surface of the beef. He planned to cure the beef for ďŹ ve days, then sear it, chill it and slice it paper-thin.

At the Beard house, those slices will be wrapped around little pasta pouches called agnolotti, which will be stuffed with oyster mushrooms from Dave & Deeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mushrooms in Sedley.

A challenge of cooking at the Beard house is that all of the food â&#x20AC;&#x201C; prepped or not â&#x20AC;&#x201C; must be transported to New York, inserting a potential wild card into Wykleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s big night.

Ingredients: • 2 Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars • 1 teaspoon shortening • 12 marshmallows • 1/4 cup graham cracker crumbs • 12 lollipop sticks • Parchment paper

Ingredients: • 3 Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars • 4 full-size graham cracker sheets • 2 tablespoon butter or margarine • 2 teaspoon sugar • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 cup cinnamon graham cereal • 1 cup miniature marshmallows • 1/2 cup peanuts

Directions: • Line cookie sheet or tray with parchment paper. Remove wrappers from chocolate bars; break into pieces.

• Place chocolate and shortening in small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute; stir. If necessary, microwave for an additional 10 seconds at a time, stirring after each heating, until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth when stirred.

• Dip about 1/2 of each marshmallow into melted chocolate; shake off excess chocolate. Immediately sprinkle chocolate portion with graham cracker crumbs or dip for heavier coating. Place uncoated side on prepared sheet. Push lollipop stick through top of chocolate about halfway into marshmallow. Repeat procedure with remaining marshmallows.

• Refrigerate for about 5 minutes or until firm. Store in cool, dry place.

Makes 12 treats.

Directions: • Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Line cookie sheet with foil. Lightly spray foil with vegetable cooking spray.

Break graham crackers into 1/2 to 1 inch pieces; spread on prepared cookie sheet.

• Place butter in small microwavesafe bowl. Heat in microwave for 30 seconds. Add sugar and cinnamon; stir until butter is melted and mixture is blended. Drizzle over graham cracker pieces.

• Bake in oven for 10 minutes; gently stir or turn over pieces. Bake for additional 10 minutes; remove from oven.

Cool completely on cookie sheet.

• Remove wrappers from chocolate; break into sections.Toss graham cracker pieces with chocolate bar pieces, cinnamon graham cereal, marshmallows and peanuts. Store in cool, dry place.

Makes about 4 cups mix.

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO SAY FOR YOURSELF, MARLON BRANDO?

Marlon Brando is more often called “the greatest actor of his generation” than he is a “pompous bore” or a “neurotic victim of his own ego.” There are those of us who still are not sure that this balance is correct.

Some of us think he ranks with Orson Welles as the most overrated “legend” of film history. We are in the minority.

The new documentary “Listen to Me Marlon” is, nevertheless, eagerly awaited by anyone interested in film history – perhaps to make up for his reclusive ambiguity (or perhaps to add to it). Using hundreds of hours of privately recorded audio, Stevan Riley’s documentary ends up with a Marlon that still mumbles.

Heavy on the audio with few new visuals, the recordings, we strongly suspect, were recorded at his home when he was either sleepy or drunk – or both. The title, maybe because he does most of the talking, seems to suggest that he is attempting to hypnotize himself. The film opens on a note of absurdity: his suggesting that he has digitally dissected his head. This, in fact, is no more absurd than his only TV interviews, which usually resulted in puzzling non sequiturs.

However, we do come away with some sympathy for his bitterness at feeling that the world has used him badly, even if the opposite would seem to be closer to the truth.

Brando died at age 80 in 2004 after a life in which he was hailed as the most influential actor in bringing realism to the art of acting but, at the same time, with a long list of ridiculous performances that are more bizarre than realistic.

In this authorized biography, released by his estate, he tells us about his lonely childhood and his alcoholic father and mother.

Poetically, he tells us about how he liked the smell of alcohol on his mother’s breath – finding it sweet. He admits, though, that he nurtured hypocrisy by playing the faithful son to his loyal father when, actually, his father was an abusive drunk who “slapped me around for no reason.”

He resented the fame that he claims drove him to neurosis (in contrast to thousands of starving actors who sought the same recognition). Like “Amy,” the documentary about the late singer Amy Winehouse, this one deals with the curse of fame. It is a tiresome premise.

There is no denying that he turned in two of the screen’s greatest performances, in “On The Waterfront” and “The Godfather.” Also worth another look are his performances in “Last Tango in Paris” (in which he claimed, illogically, that he was used).

And, of course, “A Streetcar Named Desire,” in which he played the primitive Stanley Kowalski, holds a place in the collective memory of anyone interested in theater and film of the past century.

And, maybe, “Viva Zapata”? That’s five, compared with the dozens upon dozens of failures that make up the rest of his career.

No one remembers, or wants to remember, things like “The Nightcomers,” “The

Chase,” “Morituri,” “The Ugly American,” “The Missouri Breaks,” “Christopher Columbus” or the infamous “The Island of Dr. Moreau.”

This documentary at least has the honesty to mention several of his failures: the trouble he caused in filming the huge-budgeted “Mutiny on the Bounty,” which almost bankrupted MGM, the ineptness of “The Countess From Hong Kong,” the shameless way he betrayed the trust of Francis Ford Coppola during filming of “Apocalypse Now,” the moneygrubbing cameos in things like “Superman.”

All are acknowledged, along with some suggestion that he was, eventually, ashamed that he did them. (He even has criticism for his greatest performance, in “On the Waterfront.”)

But this documentary should not be judged on the accuracy of its evaluation of Brando’s career. It attempts to get at the person, and, to its credit, it does not shy away from the disasters of a life that, after such great promise, was wasted. His conflict with his first wife, Anna Kashfi, over their son, Christian, was followed decades later by Christian’s murdering the boyfriend of his sister Cheyenne.

Cheyenne subsequently committed suicide.

We see a weeping father at court hearings.

We hear Kashfi’s screaming rage. But we get more reportage than we do insight.

We get several Academy Award nights.

On the bright side, we see Bette Davis announce that the young Brando has been named best actor for “On the Waterfront.”

Years later, we see his comeback role in “The Godfather” honored, but we also see what some perceive as an act of cowardice when, instead of appearing onstage himself, he sends an actress to refuse the Oscar over what he claims is the movie industry’s misrepresentation of Native Americans.

An initial screening today at the Naro Expanded Cinema will be followed by a longer run later. I plan to introduce the first screening with information I obtained from Kashfi, the actress Rita Moreno and the actor Johnny Depp, all of whom shared with me some insights into his behavior. I’m afraid that most of what I learned from them was negative.

Even the fact that this film is approved by his estate does not make it all pro-Brando.

We’ll never forget his few good performances, but, unfortunately, we have a great deal more to remember. Still, he deserves his reputation for bringing a new, gripping realism to film acting.

He is an enigma.

LOGANO OUTDUELS HARVICK FOR VICTORY IN SPRINT CUP

Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway, Aug. 22, provided a good look at how things could play out in the early races of the championship-deciding Chase for the Sprint Cup, which begins after just two more races.

Joey Logano won the Night Race, coming out on top of a stirring late-race duel with defending Sprint Cup champion Kevin Harvick, who now has 10 runner-up finishes for the season.

Pole-sitter Denny Hamlin finished third aboard his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. The Gibbs team, like Logano’s No. 22 Ford team at Team Penske and Harvick’s No. 4 Chevrolet group, appears to be peaking just in time for the start of the Chase.

In the past nine races, Gibbs drivers have won six times and Team Penske has won twice. At Bristol, all 500 laps were led by drivers from Gibbs and Team Penske. Gibbs’ Kyle Busch led the most, at 192, but he was nabbed for speeding on pit road on his final stop, and finished eighth. Logano was second in laps led with 176, including the final 64.

It was Logano’s second straight win in the Night Race and his second in the past three Sprint Cup races, including a victory at Watkins Glen.

Harvick’s runner-up finish was his second in a row and followed a third-place finish at Watkins Glen. Jimmie Johnson finished fourth, followed by Clint Boywer.

Logano said in his winner’s interview that his team really is peaking at a good time.

“We’re hitting it at the right time, that’s for sure,” he said. “There was a point in the

season that we were racing Top-10 a lot, but not necessarily for a win. I feel like we’re right where we need to be … I can’t wait for the Chase to start.”

Logano, who spent the early years of his NASCAR career with Gibbs before moving to Team Penske in 2013, said he’s a much better driver today than he was in his time at Gibbs. He and others around him say this could be the year that he wins his first championship.

“The difference now is I’m ready to go racing and race for championships, and back then I wasn’t,” he said. “I definitely learned a lot. I wouldn’t trade those years for a million bucks. It was such a fun learning experience over there, and it really shaped me into the person and the driver that I am. I owe them a lot for that.”

Penske, said that Logano, while still just 25 years old, has the demeanor of a much older driver.

“I think that Joey has a great sense of self,” Czarnecki said. “He has tremendous potential.”

That potential was never more evident than in the closing laps at Bristol, where Logano managed to weave his way through traffic, never making a mistake and holding off the more experienced Harvick, who had a car plenty capable of snatching away the lead if Logano made a single bobble.

“All in all, he was just one step ahead of me in traffic,” Harvick said.

Logano said he didn’t get the win just because of his own driving at the finish – it was because of the work of a lot of people on his No. 22 team.

“You think of the pressure that these guys had to go through when you come down pit road with a few laps to go, and they bust off an 11-second pit stop,” he said. “That’s because they’re athletes. That’s a true athlete when you cannot choke under pressure. I couldn’t be more proud of my team.”

REMEMBERING THE LEGENDARY RODDY PIPER

Jerry Jarrett is a retired professional wrestler and past owner of multiple wrestling promotions including Mid-Southern Wrestling, (MSW) the Continental Wrestling Association, (CWA) the United States Wrestling Association, (USWA) World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) and Total Nonstop Action (TNA).

J. J.: Roddy truly was an entertaining guy both on camera and off.

However, my memory is a compilation of encounters with Roddy. I remember having dinner with him in my home in Hendersonville, North Carolina. I remember doing business with him in my office. In every single encounter, I remember a quiet, soft-spoken, kind and gentle soul. In spite of Roddy being one of the top five wrestling celebrities of all time, he retained his humility. This is what I will always remember about Roddy Piper. At this point in my life, every wrestler I worked with falls into one of two categories and Roddy Piper was one of the good guys.

G: I first met Roddy in April or May 1983. I was 19, a giddy star crossed teen with a huge crush. ...

He was such a sweet gentleman and very soft-spoken, very unlike his TV persona. I was in awe. I moved to New York City and was there at every card at Madison Square Garden and present at WrestleMa-

nia I. He inspired me and I knew I had to do something in wrestling.

In 1987 when I went with a friend to the GLOW auditions I was wearing a Hot Rod Tee shirt. In true Piper style, the director and writer felt I had something to bring and even though I never officially auditioned, I got hired.

Then in 2011, thanks to VCW and owner Travis Bradshaw, I got to live a dream when I participated in a Piper’s Pit segment. I was treated with kindness and grace.

Afterwards, I noticed Roddy talking to some of the talent, giving them pointers and advice. He was that type of man ready to help and share himself with everyone.

Spencer Chestnutt is a professional wrestling manager for several independent promotions.

S C: I had worked with Mr. Piper once before in Summit Wrestling Association and he was as kind to everyone then as he was with all of us in VCW. He came to the VCW locker room, walked over to everyone, introduced himself, shook everyone’s hand and thanked us. He was genuinely interested in what we had to say and then added his perspective. It was an honor to be involved in the Piper’s Pit segment.

Afterwards, in the locker room, he thanked us and then spoke to the four wrestlers involved in the match privately. Most people of his status would have left, but he stayed so he could help. He gave and gave and gave to this business. There are not enough times to say how much he gave to this business.

Krotch/Jason Regiser is a current independent professional wrestler.

I remember that night well.

Meeting him was surreal. Very nice man, he introduced us to his son Colt. I remember telling him my wrestling name was “Krotch.” He looked confused and said, “Why Krotch?” I said nervously, “Easy to remember, hard to forget.” He replied, “Fair enough.” Getting the news that we would be involved in the Piper’s Pit segment was amazing. I was actually surprised but Roddy watched our match and pulled myself, Chatch and The HallStars aside to discuss what he saw in private. Giving us all constructive criticism, and advice that I hold valuable to this day. I will never forget the opportunity we had to share the stage with such a class act.

I remember when he pulled up to our show, I was outside talking with some other workers and he greeted us with his huge warm smile, and talked with us like we knew him forever. After the match, someone came up to me and said ‘Chatch, Piper wants to talk in the back.’ Unbeknownst to me, he had watched our match and we talked about how things went down and his normal excitable self was pumped and was using me as an example and chopping me (not actually, but walking through) and all I could do is grin like a 5-year-old in a toy store, because Rowdy Roddy Piper is practicing chops on me and telling us we did good and where we could improve. It definitely hit home hearing the news of his passing, he was genuinely the most friendly, compassionate legend I’ve had the pleasure to meet. I can

In 2011, I had lost my VCW commissioner job, and in a memorable VCW Piper’s Pit segment, Roddy helped me to get out of having to wrestle then VCW Tagteam champs the HallStars in a two-on-one handicap match as a stipulation to getting my job back.

Also, that same month, I was honored to interview Roddy. Here are some highlights: Yiorgo: Mr. Piper, tell us about your first time with the WWF/ WWE. Roddy Piper: Call me Roddy, please. It was beyond cruel. I was wrestling in the (Grand) Olympic Auditorium (Los Angeles). I was 19-20 years old, and I get a call

from Vince, Sr. (McMahon). They want to see me in Madison Square Garden. They fly me first class ... a limo picks me up at airport and we go to the Garden.

First guy I saw was Captain Lou Albano. He pinches my cheek and says, “Pisan, we’ve been watching ... you’re too good, we don’t want you here.” What a nice guy!

“Classy” Freddie Blassie comes up, he hits me with his cane and says, “You pencil neck geek ... we’ve been watching you, we don’t want you here.” It was tough love.

It did not mean anything to me.

I was in the third or fourth match.

Now, a bagpipe is a wooden instrument and you have to tune it – and I did. I went out and I said to basically a crowd of 24,000, “I’d like for you to stand up for the Scottish national anthem.” I went to play the bagpipes and nothing came out. Now, when I was 14, I came in fifth in the world, playing the pipes.

When I went to the back, I was heart broken. I didn’t understand it then, but ... To be continued.
