Lt. Daniel Glenn, an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officer assigned to EOD Mobile Unit (EODMU) 2, has been selected as part of the inaugural class of the Schwarzman Scholars Program.

The highly-competitive, prestigious program offers a fully funded master’s degree in one of three disciplines at Tsinghua University in Beijing; Glenn has been accepted to receive his Master of Arts in Economics.

A former Airman reviews the inventory while a military spouse places children books on the shelves. The welcoming voices of several volunteers synchronize into one melody.

Naval Station Norfolk’s Treasure Store is a place where you can buy or sell personal items such as furniture, linens, and jewelry as well as Navy uniforms at a reasonable price.

According to Kate Gray, a manager of the Treasure Shop, the store is run by volunteers and all profits are donated to local charities that aid military members and family.

“The Treasure Shop only has one paid employee,” Gray said. “The store is managed by volunteers, which allows the maximum amount of profit to be donated to charities. Last year we donated over $53,000 to several charities.”

SEARCH SUSPENDED FOR MISSING CARTER HALL SAILOR Expeditionary Strike Group 2 Public Affairs NORFOLK

Navy and Coast Guard assets ended the search April 12 for a missing Sailor assigned to USS Carter Hall (LSD 50).

Gunners Mate 3rd Class Taylor KayJean Machado was reported missing April 9 while the ship was conducting routine training operations in support of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group Composite Training Unit Exercise, approximate-

ly 60 nautical miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

The Navy immediately initiated search and rescue operations. Various Navy and Coast Guard helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft participated in the 72-hour search that covered more than 22,388 square nautical miles.

“It is with a deep sense of sadness that we suspend the search for our fellow shipmate,” Commander of Carrier Strike Group 4 Rear Adm. Bruce Lindsey, who led the search efforts, said. “Our sincere condolences are with the Sailor’s family, who have requested

privacy following their tragic loss.”

An investigation into the incident is in progress.

Several Navy and Coast Guard units were assigned to the effort. USS Carter Hall, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), USS Laboon (DDG 58), USS Mahan (DDG 72), USS Mason (DDG 87), USS Nitze (DDG 94), USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Stout (DDG 55), USS Cole (DDG 67), U.S. Coast Guard Fifth District Command Center, and various Navy and Coast Guard helicopter and fixedwing aircraft.

Ford’s first line of defense

“They are our first line of defense against terrorists and other people who wish to do us harm,” USS Gerald R. Ford’s (CVN 78) anti-terrorism training supervisor (AT-TRASUP) Sonar Technician (Surface) 1st class Gary Newsom said. “We have to train these Sailors to protect the ship. They also serve the purpose of a police force on board, maintaining good order and discipline.”

Sailors who go through in port security force (ISF) academy and receive their certification are selected from various departments through a nomination process. After departments send in their nominations, personnel who meet the minimum requirements are selected for ISF academy and upon graduation will work alongside master-at-arms (MA) while the ship is in port.

“We have the manning required to meet underway watch requirements with the number of billeted MAs,” ISF’s leading chief petty officer Chief Master-at-Arms Andrew Sparks said. “That is why we are only utilizing ISF as an in port asset.

When the ship is underway, the ISF Sailors will return to their parent department to perform their in-rate duties.”

Although Ford has MAs, Sparks said the reason we have the need for ISF is due to the number of post and security requirements the Ford has as a ship. Posts required in port are significantly larger than the requirement when underway.

“Primarily, they will make up a majority of our static posts such as entry control point, overwatch, seaward sentry, flight deck rover and brow watch,” Sparks said. “ISF is extremely important to you, me and everyone else on board – they comprise a large portion of our security requirements while in port. They meet the same training requirements as a rated MA to stand armed watches.”

Throughout the course of ISF training, Sailors learned baton striking skills and defensive techniques, hand-to-hand combat, received oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray, practiced

gun handling at a simulator and live-fire shooting range, and took part in an active shooter scenario during a tactical training exercise on board Ford.

“There are a lot of different techniques and skills that they teach you in such a short amount of time, such as constant situational awareness and being able to really deal with your emotions under high-stress situations,” ISF volunteer Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Joseph Dillard said.

Dillard said he is always looking for new and exciting opportunities the Navy has to offer and decided to volunteer his time for ISF when the chance presented itself. “[When] we go on watch, we’re armed, and we’re ready to go,” Dillard said. “If anything happens, we’re called in to handle the situation the way we were trained.”

Newsom said he received training to become an AT-TRASUP while at his last command as there was only one MA for the type of ship he was on. When the first MAs on board Ford were looking for people to train in the first group of ISF members, Newsom volunteered and has been helping ever since.

“I really enjoy teaching this class because it is not your typical Navy class where you sit in a classroom or lab all day,” Newsom said. “We get to go out to the field and teach self-defense, hand-to-hand fighting and non-lethal weapons, as well as teach firearms training. Yes, there are power points, but then we head out of the class and get to use everything we just read about.”

Security is an everyday top priority, which all Sailors regularly train in order to be prepared for any possible situation.

Through ISF academy, Sailors are given a more in-depth type of training which makes them more confident to protect their ship and everyone in it.

“I feel good,” Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Airman Apprentice Jeremy Manarang said. “I feel like I can do anything to protect the ship and my fellow shipmates.

It was a real awesome experience. I’ve learned a lot about force protection tactics and even more about teamwork and watching your team’s back at all times.”

The ships and air wing of the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (CSG) successfully completed a composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX) April 12.

COMPTUEX measured the carrier strike group’s ability to perform and effectively respond as an integrated team during simulated scenarios the group may encounter while deployed.

Eisenhower CSG is comprised

of CSG-10 staff, Destroyer Squadron 26 staff, aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), Carrier Air Wing 3, guided-missile cruisers USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and USS Monterey (CG 61), and the ships of DESRON 26: guided-missile destroyers USS Stout (DDG 55), USS Roosevelt (DDG 80), USS Mason (DDG 87) and USS Nitze (DDG 94).

The Royal Norwegian navy frigate HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen (F310) also participated in the exercise to foster a stronger partnership and integration with the U.S. Navy, and

provided the strike group an opportunity to operate with allied forces prior to deploying.

“Nansen’s participation, and the visit by Rear Adm. Lars Saunes [chief of the RNoN], signifies the importance of training and operating with our coalition partners prior to executing high-end warfare or humanitarian assistance and disaster relief,” DESRON 26 Commodore Capt. Brian Fort said.

This training measured the Eisenhower CSG’s effectiveness to collaborate and demonstrate its preparedness in multiple scenarios. To

further simulate real-world situations, a number of U.S. naval ships, submarines and aircraft served as opposing forces in anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, strike warfare, cyber warfare, maritime interdiction, irregular warfare, counter-piracy and counter-proliferation exercises.

“The team has spent months working together and increasing our readiness to execute our upcoming scheduled deployment,” Commander of Eisenhower CSG Rear Adm. Jesse A. Wilson Jr., said. “The mentoring and training

from Carrier Strike Group 4 challenged us and made us a better and stronger team that I couldn’t be prouder of.”

The completion of COMPTUEX marks the final major training evolution of Eisenhower CSG’s predeployment workup cycle.

Wilson said, “This strike group is designed to be lethal and to generate effects, and provide our leadership with options. We are more than ready.”

Regent University hosts Hampton Roads NROTC awards ceremony

Family, friends and naval leadership applauded the achievements of midshipmen during the spring 2016 Hampton Roads Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) pass-in-review and student award ceremony at Regent University April 9.

NROTC is a college program which prepares students for the rigors of being a commissioned officer in the Navy and Marine Corps. With more than 200 Sailors, Marines and midshipmen, the Hampton Roads NROTC is one of the largest officer training battalions in the country.

Regent University Director of Graduate and Military Admissions Bob Habib was envious of the opportunities that lay before the midshipmen.

“ROTC and leadership programs like

this across the country are invaluable in a sense because we want to train and equip leaders to do amazing things,” Habib said. “I know you guys and gals will do some incredible things.”

For the 34th anniversary of the NROTC battalion’s existence, companies and individual midshipmen competed for recognition of excellence in their duties, academics and leadership.

Local and national organizations sponsored 68 awards, including four national awards, to acknowledge the students in training to become the next generation of military leadership. With support from presenters reaching back more than a decade, several awards were made possible by Naval Air Force Atlantic, Submarine Force Atlantic, and Surface Force Atlantic.

“Today we honor members of the Hampton Roads NROTC unit for their efforts during the past academic year,” NROTC Commanding Officer Navy

Capt. Daniel S. Cave said. “Their performance in the classroom, drill field and playing field have been exemplary. The 60 plus awards being given today are a testament to their character, integrity and dedication to excellence.”

U.S. Fleet Forces Command Director of Fleet/Joint Training Rear Adm. Stephen T. Koehler contrasted success in business with the Navy’s mission. A Fortune 500 company in second place means the company is doing well, he said. But that is in contrast with the Navy’s mission.

“We don’t come in second, we come in first,” he said. “And that’s the challenge, which is why we need leaders just like you and what you’re doing.”

The Hampton Roads NROTC is a consortium of Hampton University, Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University, and includes students who matriculate at Regent University and Tidewater Community College.

Navy Expeditionary Combat Command’s (NECC) Safety Officer Peter Bustanoby educated Sailors and civilians in the expeditionary forces within the Type Command about the dangers of driving while distracted during Distracted Driving Awareness Month, April 15.

Bustanoby said car crashes are the number one cause of unintentional deaths in the U.S. and about 100 people die every day in car crashes throughout the United States.

“Thousands have died in car crashes involving cell phone use,” Bustanoby said. “New technology allows us to make phone calls, dictate texts or emails and update social media while driving – all actions that are proven to increase crash risk.”

Bustanoby added, safety observances each month provide opportunities for real change.

“I encourage all of our forces to take time this month and really every month of the year to concentrate on distracted driving habits and work towards developing safer strategies in navigating while driving on our roadways,” Bustanoby said.

While April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Bustanoby said from May 2-6 NECC and other Navy commands will observe the Annual Occupational Safety and Health Administration national safety stand-down to prevent falls in the workplace.

“This stand-down is primarily for units of action working at height, but we will also provide awareness to avoid slips, trips and falls, and walking working surfaces safely,” Bustanoby said.

First Lady of Virginia celebrates the Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child, a time when our nation honors the sacrifice and resiliency of the nearly two million children with parents serving in the armed forces.

The Hampton Roads area is celebrating with a number of events, to include visits by the Commonwealth of Virginia’s First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe to three area schools April 12.

McAuliffe presented proclamations declaring April the Month of the Military Child to Lee Hall, Paul Burbank, and Tarrallton Elementary schools on behalf of her husband, Governor Terry McAuliffe.

“On behalf of the governor and myself I want to say how much we appreciate you and your families and what you do for our commonwealth and for our country,” McAuliffe said. “We thank you.”

Established in 1986 by then Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, the Month of the Military Child highlights the challenges faced by military children to ensure they receive the recognition and support they deserve. These children are often asked to overcome the stress of frequent moves, be separated from their deployed parents, and deal with the academic and social difficulties of changing schools.

McAuliffe said that children of military parents will transfer schools on average of nine to twelve times before graduating from high school.

During her visit to Lee Hall Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, McAuliffe spoke with dozens of children whose parents serve in the area’s three military installations. They shared with her stories of missing a deployed parent and the sadness of saying goodbye to old friends.

Yet, while describing such experiences, the students displayed an upbeat and positive attitude.

“To hear from these wonderful students and their experiences and what it means for them to be in a family that serves their country has been just a complete treasure and treat for me,” McAuliffe said. “I just loved meeting every single one of them, they’re amazing.”

The Superintendent of Newport News Public Schools, Dr. Ashby Kilgore said approximately 3,100 of the district’s 27,100 students, over 10 percent, come from military families.

Like many districts across the nation, Kilgore said Newport News provides programs for military children to help ease their transition into a new school. The district receives government funding to staff military councilors, offers weekly support groups and assigns new students to a buddy as they learn their way around.

“We want to be smart about kid’s social needs as well as their academic needs,” Kilgore said.

To hear from these wonderful students and their experiences and what it means for them to be in a family that serves their country has been just a complete treasure and treat for me.”

Pipe design approved as Dynamic wraps up CMAV

Floating Dry-dock Dynamic, a Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) asset, underwent final pipe design inspections during her Continuous Maintenance Availability (CMAV) at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, April 6.

East Coast Repair and Fabrication, along with MARMC Production Department ship fitters, welders and pipe shop workers have been renovating and updating Dynamic since January.

“In order to extend the operational life of the dock, we started by stripping all the ballast tanks of existing equipment – the pipes, pumps, hangers, shafts and motors,” East Coast Superintendent

Ricky Whisonant said.

Dynamic’s ballast tank pumps were 72 years old.

Following engineered drawings and design, East Coast Repair and Fabrication installed and welded new foundations for all ballast tank equipment.

A new type of pump – dewatering pump/ballast tank pump, which allows the dock to sink and float when docking a craft – called a flow-serve submergible pump, was installed on all eight pump foundations.

Booster pumps were also installed for salt water cooling the diesel generator.

“This was the first time these pumps had been installed in dry-dock and this was a major alteration for the dock,” Dynamic Commanding Officer Lt. Cmdr. Shawn Gibson said.

“The [Norfolk Naval Shipyard Engineering and Planning Department] engineers came down, took measurements,

and made sure everything was in compliance – that there’s no stress on the pipes and the pumps are aligned properly.

They ensured everything will operate as designed.”

Several MARMC employees have been involved in Dynamic’s CMAV. The contracts department negotiated all new work with the contractor. Waterfront operations shipbuilding specialists are on-site everyday providing process verification inspections – ensuring everything and everyone is safe while working.

Dynamic Sailors have pitched in too.

“The crew of Dynamic is involved each and every day,” Gibson said. “Keeping safety in mind is first and foremost as work progresses. The chiefs approved all the hot work as it was done inside the tanks. There was a lot of hot work going on in all the

tanks, so safety had to be at the highest level.”

Gibson also insists on keeping the job site clean.

“Cleanliness is the other big thing that we have to maintain,” Gibson said. “We police the dock as work is going on to ensure everyone is picking up after themselves – sweeping and making sure floating dust bunnies don’t blow over to where the welders are working and catch fire. If you don’t keep it clean, you can’t keep it safe.”

Dynamic’s crew has been hands-on in vent pipe repairs during the CMAV as well.

Deteriorating vent piping in the generator room needed attention by the Sailors.

“We were able to fix it ourselves – we cut out six inches of the pipe, replaced it with new pipe and TIG welded it all the way around,” Hull Technician Fireman Corinne Gharineh said. “It gives you a sense of pride after you complete the work – you feel good about yourself, when you are able to accomplish something that’s good for the dock and you know everything is going to be safe after that.”

NAVSTA Norfolk Sailors and families participated in Fleet and Family Support Center’s “Take Back the Morning Walk” for Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, April 15.

The silent luminary walk began at the baseball field by Vista Point, where the waterfront was lined with luminaries representing the victims of sexual assault.

“It is important that we keep in mind why this is a silent walk,” NAVSTA Sexual Assault Response Coordinator Lead Meredith Noha said. “We do this in silence to represent the victims who remain silent because they fear they will not be believed or supported if they come forward. This mentality and fear is something that the Navy’s sexual assault prevention and response program strives daily to combat.”

NAVSTA Norfolk’s sexual assault prevention and response (SAPR) program has more than 1,000 credentialed uniformed victim advocates to support the tenant commands and Sailors.

Sexual assault is defined as intentional sexual contact characterized by use of force, threats, intimidation, abuse of authority, or when the victim doesn't or can't consent. It can occur without regard to gender or spousal relationship or age of victim.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM).

Although sexual assault awareness and prevention is a year-round effort, SAAPM is a focused time when both military and civilian sexual assault organizations engage their respective communities in these efforts. This year's DOD and Navy theme is "Prevention is Possible." The theme focuses on the ways individuals, communities, and the private sector can take action to promote safety, respect and equality.

The Navy offers two options for victims to report an alleged sexual assault – restricted and unrestricted.

Restricted reports must be made to designated personnel, such as the sexual assault response coordinator (SARC), a SAPR victim advocate, a chaplain or health care professional.

These reports will not be disclosed to the command or law enforcement but will give victims confidential access to medical care, forensic examination, advocacy and information.

Unrestricted reporting allows allegations to be brought before the victim's chain of command, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, a command SARC and health care professionals. This type of reporting will lead to an investigation and provide the victim all the resources of restricted reporting.

“The Navy has a zero-tolerance policy for sexual assault,” NAVSTA Commanding Officer Capt. Doug Beaver said. “It is everyone’s responsibility to do everything possible to eliminate it from our ranks.”

Continued from front Gray also stated that active duty, retirees, veterans and their families have an opportunity to earn money while contributing to the community.

“An individual can come into the shop and fill out paperwork that gives them a 70 [percent] profit. Once the item leaves, the remaining 30 percent goes to charity,” Gray said. “The person has two months to keep their items in the store with the opportunity to gain profit. Once the two months expire they can either take the item back or leave it in our shop as a donation, which 100 percent of the profit will go to charity.”

According to Pat Rutherford, a manager of the Treasure Shop is designed to benefit charities and the individuals that contribute.

“We welcome any forms of donation from our community and provide them with the opportunity to also make a profit.” Rutherford said.

The Treasure Shop carries home items from the months of September thru May at an affordable price and uniform items all year around.

“We recently sold a sofa to a Coast Guard member that fell victim to the recent Ocean View fire,” Gray said. “The fire destroyed everything he owned and this shop was able to present a piece of furniture that was extremely affordable during a time of need.”

Chief Warrant Officer Sammy Slaughter, assigned to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron (HM) 15, spoke of the benefit of shopping at the Treasure Store. “The people that work here provide excellent customer service and I was able to buy my Dress White uniform for a quarter of the price,” Slaughter said. “I purchased my uniform for $16, though it would normally cost $100 if bought from the retailers. The amount of money that I am able to save is incredible.”

Dave Dyal was grateful for the support the program has received here locally. “Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month gives our SAPR team an opportunity to put events together that will build on our level of knowledge as a command,” Dyal said. “This year it seems like we can’t catch a break with the weather, but I am still very happy with the level of support we had for the event.

I believe it is a good thing to get out of our comfort zone from time-totime, especially when it concerns a topic as serious as sexual assault.”

Dyal introduced Isaiah Williams, a civilian SAPR victim advocate for NAVSTA Norfolk. He explained the origin of Denim Day, which began after a 1992 Italian rape case, where an 18-year-old was picked up by her driving instructor to begin a driving lesson. Soon after, she was raped on the side of the road by the instructor.

She pressed charges and won her case.

The instructor appealed to the Italian High Court. In 1999, the court overturned the conviction with a member of the court declaring that since the victim wore very tight jeans, the instructor couldn’t have removed them

without her assistance. Therefore, the victim must have been a willing participant. Women of the Italian legislature protested the decision by wearing jeans. As news of the decision spread, so did the protest. In April 1999, the state of California established the first Denim Day in the U.S. In observance of Denim Day, Sailors were authorized to wear civilian clothes for the day to include denim jeans.

Program is a “once-in-alifetime opportunity.”

Continued from front “I’m quite excited,” Glenn said. “I’m the eldest member of the inaugural class of Schwarzman Scholars--under the age limit by four days. I’m the only active-duty member of the class with experience as an officer.” Glenn doesn’t count his age as a hindrance, but a lens through which he can use his experiences to mentor others and springboard into a new chapter.

“The way that I think about that is … Thinking on how I was six years ago,” Glenn said. “I think how much I’ve learned and how much I’ve grown in those six years. I was so idealistic, I was so energetic, but at the same time, just me personally, I was naïve. So I hope that I can bring my experience and the realism that experience seems to breed. I hope that I can absorb some of their idealism.”

Glenn’s mentor, Dr. Stephen Wrage, a professor at the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), brought the program to Glenn’s attention during a conversation they shared regarding Glenn’s next steps. Wrage knew Glenn’s passion for leadership – Glenn held nine leadership positions while a midshipman – and thought the program would be a perfect fit. According to the Schwarzman Scholars website, the program is “designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders.” Glenn was immediately interested.

“When I was reading on the website, about leadership – I knew this was the program for me,” Glenn said. “I was hooked. EOD’s logo is a shield with a bomb on it. The Schwarzman program’s insignia is a shield. From the first minute of hearing about the program, my focus was singular. I felt the same way about the Naval Academy and Navy EOD – such an outrageous honor, I have so much to live up to, so much to prove.”

Glenn has already proven much during his six years of active duty service, graduating early from USNA and enrolling at the University of Maryland, College Park, as part of the Voluntary Graduate Education Program (VGEP). After earning a Master of Arts in Government and Politics, Foreign Policy, Glenn completed the approximately 18 months of dive, jump, tactical expeditionary combat skills, and EOD training for his pipeline. He then deployed twice to the CENTCOM area of responsibility, and was recently awarded a Bronze Star for his second deployment – coincidentally, when he found out he would be a Schwarzman Scholar.

Following his conversation with Wrage, Glenn sent in an application while in Turkey and Skyped in an interview for consideration while in Baghdad. The emails that came after, telling him he was a semifinalist and then a finalist, all arrived while he was in theater, along with a New York Times article detailing the program and featuring Glenn.

“It was about 3:30 a.m. when I got the email in Iraq telling me I was accepted,” Glenn said. “I was so humbled I didn’t tell anyone for two days. Not even my team. This program is such a dream come true for me, I didn’t even know how to tell anybody. I feel like I wasn’t accepting it, I must have read this email 10 times. It’s too much – It can’t be real.”

Glenn eventually told his team, “They were mad at me that I didn’t tell them right away,” he said, describing their support and the close knit nature of their relationships. Glenn also realized that being accepted to the program meant he would be leaving active duty, as the previous master’s degree meant he was ineligible for a break in service to pursue a second.

Still, despite the bittersweetness of the moment, Glenn looks forward to what the future brings.

“My dad always said to me that this was a chapter, this was going to be the warrior chapter in the story of my life,” Glenn said. “I think that’s true for everyone who serves. A lot of times we don’t really think about it that way. People that are in the military for one, two, three decades, think of it as their persona – but I think it’s just a chapter for each of us. I’m excited for the next chapter, for the adventure it’s going to bring. For the first time in 10 years – there’s such wild instability that comes with a military life, but at the same time, I think that, generally speaking, there’s a kind of predictability about that instability. You know you’re going to deploy, you know you’re going to move, there’s a career path, there’s wickets. I’m moving from that world to one that has no rules anymore. And for the first time ever, I don’t have a three-year set of orders I have to fulfill.”

“Danny was among 200 – 45 of which were American – selectees from approximately 3,000 applicants,” EODMU 2 Commanding Officer Cmdr. Rudy Schoen said. “It’s never easy to lose an officer of Danny’s caliber, but I have no doubt that he will excel in whatever capacity he chooses to serve our country.”

The Schwarzman Scholars website reads, “Students will spend a year immersed in an international community of thinkers, innovators and senior leaders in business, politics and society. In an environment of intellectual engagement, professional development and cultural exchange, they will learn from one another and pursue their academic disciplines while building their leadership capacities. This experience will expand students’ understanding of the world and create a growing network of global leaders for the future. “It’s overwhelming,” Glenn said. “I’m almost waiting for someone to tell me it’s all a dream.”

Naval Support Activity Bethesda’s (NSAB’s) Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) hosted a Health and Fitness Fair April 16 to promote a healthy lifestyle in children and NSAB’s Child Development Center (CDC) has daily activities, culminating in an Olympics-style event April 29.

This is the fifth year for the Health and Fitness Fair at NSAB, which starts after the Armed Forces Kids Fun Run, April 16. The event will be in the atrium and gym of Building 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We want to honor military children,” FFSC Education Services Facilitator Anna Rhodes said. “And health and fitness is something that is important to the military, so it’s a great way to get the kids out and show them there are a lot of fun activities they can do.”

At the Health and Fitness Fair, there will be several organizations with activities to promote how their organizations help children. For example, last year a diabetes educator asked children to guess which items on her table had the least amount of sugar, Rhodes said.

To encourage visits at each station, each child will be given a “passport” and will get a stamp at each table that can be handed in for a prize, FFSC new parent Support Nurse Ursula Rocha said.

“It’s a way for families to get out and see what services are available to them,” Rocha said.

The fair is geared towards children up to 13 years old. In addition to the information tables, there will be an obstacle course, video game set up with fitness-

The deed is done, but not forgotten

“Ach! I’ve got to get rid of this albatross around my neck!” my husband Francis exclaimed recently, with plenty of overly-dramatic Italian gesturing with hairy arms. “‘Albatross?’ Don’t be so dramatic,” I retorted. “I love that house. Hayden will never forget his little blue room, Anna took her first steps in that cul-de-sac, Lilly was born there … and Zuzu is buried in the back yard for criminy’s sake!”

Last week, we put the house we’ve owned since 1998 on the market, and our emotions have been mixed.

After returning from a military tour of duty in England with a toddler and a newborn, we bought our first home in Virginia Beach, intending to stay a while.

Even though “homesteading” was frowned upon, we didn’t care – our son had been diagnosed with developmental delays, and in order for his treatment to be effective, he needed stability. Lucky for us, Francis was offered competitive Navy orders to U.S. 2nd Fleet, Fleet Forces Command, and Joint Forces Command, enabling us to stay put without jeopardizing his career.

our suburban cul-de-sac, the kids knew the shortcut to the local park.

I planned the neighborhood Halloween Parade every year. We got our first puppy “Dinghy” after Zuzu the cat died. We went to the ice cream place down the street after Hayden’s flag football games.

Lilly would toddle across the circle in nothing but a diaper to flirt with Jimmy, our 16-year-old neighbor.

On Friday nights, we drank cold beer with our neighbors while sitting in lawn chairs on the driveway.

And mornings, we could hear the Fairfield Elementary School announcements from our front porch.

In that happy little Dutch Colonial, I dabbled in home improvements, installing a new faucet, ceiling fans, lights, and built-in shelving in the playroom. Every spring, while the daffodils, azaleas, ferns and hostas pushed through the mulch, Francis and I argued about whether the lawn needed aerating. We added a screened porch, which became the site of many birthday dinners, afternoon coffee breaks, and Lilly’s first communion brunch. Anna broke her arm falling from our backyard playset, and the following year, Lilly got stitches in her head for the same reason.

Like I said, I loved that house.

When we got orders to Germany in 2008, we told ourselves, “We’ll definitely come back here one day.”

But we never did.

Now, before we have to face tricky capital gains taxes, we have decided to sell. Francis isn’t sad to see her go, because he is tired of the responsibilities and stresses of renting and maintaining a house from a distance. Unscrupulous property managers, surprise repairs, expensive maintenance, negligent renters, and those painful months between rentals when we had to pay our mortgage without receiving any rent checks, put Francis in the mood to sell.

I, on the other hand, feel the bittersweet pangs of melancholy as

I prepare myself to sign away the deed to a decade of some of the most important years of our family’s life.

But it is time.

Time for another young family to grace her walls with baby photos. Time for another child to hang a swing from the branches of her big oak tree. Time for another husband to gripe about the leaves in her gutters, and for another wife to plant pansies in her front beds.

Time for another pair of siblings to draw on her playroom walls with permanent marker. Time for another dog to sleep soundly in front of her fire-warmed hearth.

New urgent care pilot program for prime beneficiaries TRICARE

To increase access to care, the Department of Defense is launching an Urgent Care Pilot Program for TRICARE Prime beneficiaries.

This program allows Prime enrollees two visits to a network or TRICARE authorized provider without a referral or prior authorization.

The Urgent Care Pilot Program, scheduled to begin May 23, is for: ■ Active duty family members (ADFMs) enrolled in TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Prime Remote; ■ Retirees and their family members who are enrolled in Prime within the 50 states or the District of Columbia; ■ Active duty service members (ADSMs)

enrolled in TRICARE Prime Remote and stationed overseas but traveling stateside.

ADSMs enrolled in TRICARE Prime are not eligible for this program as their care is managed by their Service. This pilot also excludes Uniformed Services Family Health Plan (USFHP) enrollees. TRICARE Overseas Program (TOP) enrollees can receive an unlimited number of urgent care visits, but only when they are traveling stateside and seeking care.

There are no point of service (POS) deductibles or cost shares for these two urgent care visits, but network copayments still apply.

Once you receive urgent care, you must notify your primary care manager (PCM) about that care within 24 hours or the first business day after the urgent care visit. Authorization

requirements have not changed for follow up care, specialty care or inpatient care.

When you are not sure of the type of care you need, or you require care outside of standard business hours, call the Nurse Advice Line (NAL). If the NAL recommends an urgent care visit, and a referral is submitted, that visit will not count against the two pre-authorized visits allowed under the Urgent Care Pilot. However, if you call the NAL and get a referral to a military hospital or clinic and you go elsewhere for care, that visit will count against your two preauthorized visits.

5 things every Sailor should know about submitting travel claims

SINGAPORE

Most service members stationed in Navy Region Singapore are familiar with the routine process of submitting travel claims due to the high operational tempo and official travel conducted throughout the region for exercises and theater security engagements.

Upon return from travel, travelers are required to submit a travel claim with accompanying documentation through the Defense Travel System (DTS) website.

Each travel claim submitted should have the following items scanned and attached to the claim.

■ Travel worksheet: Worksheet containing basic information (i.e. name, rank, destination, dates of travel, etc.); ■ ETicket/Flight itinerary: A copy of itinerary can be located at http://bit.ly/1MxWMzz; ■ All receipts: Receipts require a brief ex-

planation and exchange rate of what the receipt is for on the scanned receipt; ■ Hotel checkout forms: Along with receipt from any hotel stays, the final bill received upon checking out of the hotel, with the daily rate charged shown, is required; ■ Bank statements from government travel card account: Your bank statement should include all claimed expenses. You should highlight the applicable expenses on the bank statement for the reviewer’s attention. The expenses should match the receipts you filed in your travel claim.

Each item on the checklist must be scanned individually and included in the claim under “per-diem entitlements” or “non-mileage expenses.” Administrative Department personnel will then review the documents and cross reference travel card bank statements to the ensure accuracy of the payback amount.

“The DTS system is designed to be user friendly, and the changes to the system re-

flect that,” Yeoman 2nd Class Andres Hurtado said. “Within the last year, DTS added the integrated lodging option, which gives the service member more ability to coordinate their own lodging. These changes make official travel more flexible for the service member.”

Changes to the process of submitting a travel claim and what can be included in reimbursable expenses are always evolving.

As of October 1, 2014, ordinary expenses such as laundry, baggage tips, and ATM fees will now be covered under the incidental expense portion of per diem ($5 per day in CONUS and at various rates OCONUS) and will no longer be reimbursed as separate miscellaneous expenses. This policy revision also designates certain expenses, such as cell phone use and phone calls, as mission-related expenses that are to be paid out of mission funded accounts outside of DTS itself.

“The DTS system helps provide the service member control of their travel,” Chief Erik Estrada said. “It allows them to see details of their claim and gives them the ability to look over everything they’ve submitted. It includes them personally in the process of their submission.”

A U.S. Navy destroyer operating in international waters in the Baltic Sea experienced several close interactions by Russian aircraft April 11 and 12.

USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) encountered multiple, aggressive flight maneuvers by Russian aircraft that were performed within close proximity of the ship.

On April 11, Cook was conducting deck landing drills with an allied military helicopter when two Russian SU-24 jets made numerous close-range and low altitude passes at approximately 3 p.m. local. One of the passes, which occurred while the allied helicopter was refueling on the deck of Cook, was deemed unsafe by the ship’s commanding officer. As a safety precaution, flight operations were suspended until the SU-24s departed the area.

On April 12, while Cook was operating in international waters in the Baltic Sea, a Russian KA-27 Helix helicopter conducted circles at low altitude around the ship, seven in total, at approximately 5 p.m. local. The helicopter passes were also deemed unsafe and unprofessional by the ship’s commanding officer. About 40 minutes following the interaction with the Russian helicopter, two Russian SU-24 jets made numerous closerange and low altitude passes, 11 in total. The Russian aircraft flew in a simulated attack profile and failed to respond to repeated safety advisories in both English and Russian. Cook’s commanding officer deemed several of these maneuvers as unsafe and unprofessional.

“April 11-12, USS Donald Cook was operating in a professional manner in international waters conducting operations and exercises with our allies in the Baltic Sea,” Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa Adm. Mark Ferguson said. “In my judgement these maneuvers in close proximity to Donald Cook are unprofessional and unsafe.”

U.S. officials are using existing diplomatic channels to address the interactions while the incidents are also being reviewed through U.S. Navy channels.

Defense support of civil authorities stressed at EPLO workshop

Top planners from U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Pacific Command, all four branches of the Department of Defense and the U.S. Coast Guard held a workshop this week at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego.

Conversation throughout the workshop stressed how the components could better work together to provide Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) in response to natural disasters.

The mission of DSCA is to provide DOD assets to civil authorities in response to requests for assistance for domestic emergencies, law enforcement support, and other domestic activities, or from qualifying entities for special events.

“Partnerships are more important than ever,” U.S. Northern Command Director of Operations Maj. Gen. Jack Briggs said. “Theater security cooperation is not just with foreign governments, it’s also with local, state, tribal, and federal agencies.”

Subject-matter experts led discussions among the more than 500 workshop participants regarding best practices, how to identify areas of improvement, and stressed the importance of building relationships within the disaster relief community so that, when called upon, the DOD can respond collectively and more efficiently to requests for DSCA. “First we need to identify the ‘as is’ and then determine what the ideal ‘to be’ is,” Briggs said.

In his presentation, he offered some insight on his team’s strategy to solve complex issues.

According to Briggs, the process involves: identifying the authority and corresponding responsibilities and capabilities, and then defining the command, control, and coordination of assets, and finally seeking guidance from a higher joint command authority.

“If there’s a better ‘to be’ out there, then we shouldn’t be afraid of it,” Briggs added.

The weeklong workshop focused on building relationships among the attendees and setting the stage to foster the opportunity to create a clear path to improved DSCA within the DOD. “The Department of Defense brings capabilities that no other federal agency has and it’s important for us to be able to work together so that we can link capability to need,” FEMA Director of Operational Coordination Deanne Criswell said.

USS Boxer (LHD 4) Sailors reflect on anniversary of Capt. Phillips rescue

Sailors aboard amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) took time April 12 to reflect on the anniversary of the rescue of Capt. Richard Phillips from Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden seven years ago.

Phillips was successfully rescued April 12, 2009, by special operations personnel aboard USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) and transferred to Boxer for medical evaluation and care. Boxer also served as a staging platform for the rescue operation.

“This is a great reminder of the flexibility and warfighting spirit Boxer exhibits: always ready to respond, no matter the crisis, operation or mission,” Boxer’s Commanding Officer Capt. Mike Ruth said. “The Capt. Phillips story displays the great teamwork across communities within the U.S. Navy as evidenced by our ships and special operations forces during this well coordinated and executed rescue mission.”

Boxer was conducting routine operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility when the ship was tasked

with the counter-piracy mission within the Maritime Security Patrol Area of the Gulf of Aden.

“Once Boxer entered the rescue operation for Capt. Phillips there was a noticeable sense of purpose in the demeanor of the entire crew,” current member of Boxer media division and a former member of the 2009 crew, Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Matthew Jackson said.

Combined Task Force 151, then commanded by Adm. Michelle Howard, embarked Boxer prior to the mission, and had command and control of all Navy assets in the area during the hostage situation.

Cmdr. Frank X. Castellano, former commander of Bainbridge, began negotiations with the suspected pirates and ultimately gave the order to three Navy SEAL snipers to execute a synchronized shot to incapacitate Phillips’ captors.

Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Charles Ellis, who was aboard Boxer in 2009 and is currently the leading chief petty officer of the Crash and Salvage division, said he was excited to see the SEALs come on board and execute the mission of rescuing Capt. Phillips.

“Watching the movie made me realize that I was actually a part of history,”

“Boxer played a critical role in Capt.

Phillips rescue,” Jackson said. “The multipurpose functionality of amphibious assault ships extends potential mission capabilities beyond simply being a floating airport. The Boxer crew took a great deal of pride in being part of the operation.”

“It really put the Boxer out there on a level above and beyond other ships,” Ellis said. “The mission gave a great feeling of success to the American public, something more than just warfighting capabilities.”

Phillips’ rescue mission demonstrated to the crew why Boxer is such a valued U.S. naval asset.

“The Medical Department is huge, the vertical takeoff and landing ability of Harrier aircraft is a game changer, the Deck Department Sailors on amphibious ships are the best I’ve seen in seven deployments, and flexible mentality of the crew solidify that foundation,” Jackson said. “The reason I came back to the gator Navy is because Boxer has shown me this ship can go anywhere and do anything.”

Boxer is currently deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility in support of maritime security and theater security cooperation efforts.

During a ceremony April 11, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced the next Arleigh-Burke class destroyer, DDG 120, will be named Carl M. Levin in honor of the longest serving senator in Michigan history.

During his 36 years in the Senate, Levin was a member of the Senate Committee on Armed Services and its chair for more than nine years.

He also served as chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, as a member of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. He led the Senate in adoption of the Defense Authorization Acts from 2007 through January 2015 when he retired.

Currently, Levin is senior counsel at Honigman Miller Schwartz

and Cohn LLP and chair of the Levin Center at Wayne State University Law School and the law school’s distinguished legislator in residence.

“It is a great honor to name this ship in recognition of such a dedicated public servant,” Mabus said.

“I have no doubt that all who serve aboard her will carry on the legacy of service and commitment exemplified by Carl Levin during his storied career.”

“My family and I are deeply moved by this singular honor and to be so wonderfully connected to the men and women of our great Navy,” Levin said.

FIST2FAC: The future of Navy combat training?

Lookouts on the bridge of USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112) scanned the surrounding ocean. All seemed well – clear skies, peaceful waters, busy merchant ship traffic.

Suddenly, a swarm of small fast-attack boats buzzed toward the destroyer. Within moments, a machine gunner shot withering streams of 50-caliber bullets at the approaching enemies, forcing their retreat.

This wasn’t a real attack on an American ship, but a tribute to the realism of the Fleet Integrated Synthetic Training/Testing Facility (FIST2FAC) – which develops, tests and demonstrates simulator training technology blending live-action exercises with virtual assets and adversaries.

“This is the future of training for the Navy,” Office of Naval Research (ONR) Warfighter Performance Department Head Dr. Terry Allard said. “With simulation, you can explore endless possibilities without the expense and logistical challenges

of putting hundreds of ships at sea and aircraft in the sky.”

Recently, ONR – with support from members of its Reserve Component – demonstrated new and improved training technology at FIST2FAC, located on Ford Island, Hawaii. FIST2FAC combines a hassle-free setup, software and gaming technology to help naval forces develop strategies for diverse missions and operations. It allows Sailors to interact with artificially intelligent forces in countless virtual settings – and train for multiple missions simultaneously. The system can replicate situations involving aircraft carriers, helicopters – in this case, a squadron from Marine Corps Base Hawaii – lethal and nonlethal weapons, and more.

“FIST2FAC was created in response to an urgent need for a more portable way for ships to train in any given operating area,” ONR’s Integration and Transition Manager Glenn White said. “It allows Sailors to ‘train like they fight’ by presenting realistic forces in a visual, tactical and operational environment.”

A restored Coast Guard HH-52A Seaguard helicopter was dedicated into the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. UdvarHazy Center during a ceremony April 14.

The 1960s-era HH-52A, which bore the tail number 1426, was renovated by Vector CSP and is now the only Coast Guard aircraft on display in a Smithsonian museum.

The 1426 helicopter spent many years at the North Valley Occupational Center’s aviation facility in Los Angeles until members of the Coast Guard Aviation Association became aware of it in 2012.

Restoration work began in March 2015 and finished in November 2015.

White said the technology demonstrated at FIST2FAC is a valuable tool for the Navy for two main reasons – savings and security.

The software is reusable and can be modified for different environments. By comparison, it costs about $250,000 just to get an aircraft carrier out for live training – and approximately $6 million to fuel a strike group for a week. A live event lasting six to 10 hours may cost $1 million.

The ability to recreate so many combat scenarios anywhere also is useful in training for any challenge a ship might face worldwide – from vessel maintenance to landing a fighter jet to navigating hostile waters.

Currently, FIST2FAC is shore based, but one day White wants to make the capabilities developed there available to ships at sea.

“The ultimate goal is to wrap a destroyer in an augmented world where everyone throughout the ship can see virtual vessels, Aircraft and adversaries and train to respond appropriately,” White said.

Sailors manning a virtual ship were pitted against several fast-attack craft in waters crowded with merchant traffic. They quickly determined the boats to be hostile and engaged them with machine-gun fire from both the ship and a virtual helicopter.

FIST2FAC, which was developed with support from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport Division, has demonstrated simulator technology since 2010.

The latest event showcased improved capabilities and new enhancements to FIST2FAC training simulators: ■ The bridge of Murphy, docked at nearby Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, was equipped with an array of computer screens and big-screen television monitors – allowing it to engage in virtual combat scenarios while maintaining contact with Ford Island.

■ Sailors operating the 50-caliber machine gun on the ship wore augmented-reality glasses, enabling them to see virtual enemy combatants within a live physical setting.

■ Participants on Ford Island and the destroyer experienced degraded radar, video streaming and communications, mirroring the effects of an enemy jamming commu-

The fleet of HH-52A rescue helicopters, developed from a Sikorsky amphibious helicopter, was known for their versatility and reliability. The first of a total of 99 helicopters was delivered to the Coast Guard on Jan. 9, 1963. The last flight of the helicopter was on Sept.

12, 1989.

The helicopters served in the Coast Guard for 26 years and are credited with saving more

than 15,000 lives. One notable case involved the rescue of 1,200 people by HH-52A helicopter crews following Hurricane Betsy in 1965. The crew of tail number 1426 saved 22 lives from a burning tanker ship outside the entrance to Galveston Bay, Texas, in 1979.

Toward the end of the ceremony, Commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Paul F. Zukunft and Chief of the Coast Guard (Office of Aviation Forces) Capt. Joe Kimball presented retired Coast Guard Cmdr. Frank Shelley with the Legion of Merit award for his meritorious service as the HH-52A project manager from 1961-1964.

“The Seaguard may not be a household name to some, but it’s a big part of our Coast Guard history and our history of Coast Guard aviation,” Zukunft said.

This April, Sailors aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) are leading efforts to educate Sailors in observance of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM).

The Navy implemented the sexual assault prevention and response (SAPR) program to eliminate sexual assault.

The goal of SAPR is to change attitudes and behaviors in the Navy and support a culture of professionalism, respect and trust. One way this is accomplished is through victim advocates. “[The victim advocate’s mission is] to create a safe space for victims and ensure that they know their rights and resources,” John C. Stennis’ deployed Resiliency Counselor Karen Christensen said.

Air Traffic Controller 2nd Class Jacquelyn Parra, a victim advocate aboard Stennis, explained that Stennis’ victim advocates actively strive to cultivate a safe environment for the crew through training.

“They are combating the stigmas associated with reporting an assault,” Parra said. “Those stigmas are detrimental to the victim and workplace and can make a person unwilling to seek help if they’ve been assaulted.”

Parra stressed the victim advocates are a good resource for Sailors with questions about sexual assault.

“If [SAPR victim advocates] don’t know the answer to your question, we know where to find the answer to your question,” she said.

People who get counseling from an advocate are not required to file a report, but there are two types of reports Sailors

can file – unrestricted and restricted.

In both types of reports, the victim will be given care and treatment but an unrestricted report will begin an open investigation into the incident. This requires full disclosure and cooperation from everyone involved, while details and names are kept confidential on a need-to-know basis.

Once an unrestricted report is made it cannot be reverted to a restricted report. However, a restricted report means an incident will not be investigated, but the victim will still be treated, cared for, counseled, and have the option of filing an unrestricted report.

To file a report, or to get counseling and advice, Sailors can speak to the sexual assault resiliency counselor (SARC), any SAPR victim advocate, chaplain, or health care professional.

Sailors seeking advice or help should always confirm with their counselor the extent of their confidentiality and what they are obliged to report.

Chaplains, for example, have complete confidentiality, but a work center supervisor is obligated to file an unrestricted report if there is an assault.

SAPR victim advocates aboard Stennis are hosting a competition to educate Sailors on the available options to prevent and respond to sexual assault.

Departments throughout the ship decorate their doors to help Sailors better understand the SAPR program.

The display must include the slogan “Eliminate Sexual Assault: Know your part. Do your part” to fit this year’s theme. At the end of the competition, the victim advocates will decide which department best accomplished that goal.

Nikki Haley made an appearance April 9 to talk to the competing high school students and connect the competition activities to the real-life cyber attacks on state agencies. “We need you to care about cyber security because it is real,” the governor said.

Fathered by Master Chief Hospital Corpsman Joseph Burds, Jeffrey lost his mother Debra to cancer when he was only 9 years old. Since then, he has held true to what his mother told him before her passing, which was to “Do great things in life.”

“When my mom was going through her chemotherapy, I had to be the man of the household,” Jeffrey said. “I just had to take over, and getting from point A to point B was on me. My dad wasn’t able to be there to give me a ride, so I had to either walk or just find a way.

I haven’t let that stop me from participating in sports and other activities throughout high school.”

According to Jeffrey, he has recently earned his driver’s license, which is just one of the many steps to come for his successful future.

“I absolutely plan on going to college after high school,” Jeffrey said. “I just don’t know for sure what I want to

learning. We want to give back and help in the competition next year.”

A “Pro Day” training challenge for government and industry professional teams was held April 11. Government teams were from Cyber National Mission Force, Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command, North Carolina National Guard and the South Carolina National Guard. Industry teams were from CSRA Inc., Scientific Research Corporation, SCANA Energy, and a joint team from Adapt Forward LLC, CACI International. In keeping with the goals of PCDC, two collegiate students were embedded within each pro team. CSRA invited previous high school MVP Amanda Prevatt, now a Stall High senior, to join their team for the second year in a row. Pro Day is considered an opportunity for workforce development, training, recruiting and networking.

To add emphasis on cyber, a Cyber Forensics Challenge was held April 9. Participants solved as many forensics scenarios as possible earning points. Hourly leaders received prizes and overall winner, Lance Alt, received a Samsung Galaxy Tablet. The South Carolina National Guard presented several cyber security lectures, including Cyber Legal Policies, Welcome to Cyber, and open-source cyber tools.

“Officers and senior enlisted leaders can also benefit from the information and can use it to help mentor and support their Sailors with many of the personal challenges they face upon reaching the fleet.”

The app is a bring-your-own-device tool designed to work on personal devices outside of the NMCI domain. Users can download the Life Skills ReachBack app from both Google Play and iTunes app stores at no cost.

The CDCs chose to promote a healthy lifestyle with an Olympics theme during their celebration of Month of the Military Child, NSAB Child and Youth Program Oversight Director Jamila Aziz said.

“We decided to go with Olympics and include health and fitness because in order to compete, you have to be healthy with nutrition and physical activities,” Aziz said.

So the children will be given healthy foods, such as smoothies and fruit salads, and also participate in exercises such as yoga and family Zumba. During

the week of April 18, parents are encouraged to join their child’s class for outdoor play, and the week of April 25, parents are invited to come play sports with their child.

On April 29, the CDCs big celebration is centered on parents and their children competing in an Olympics-style event where there will be relay races, scooter races and an obstacle course.

In 1986, the DOD designated April as Month of the Military Child to recognize the personal sacrifices and contributions of military children.

“We appreciate everything the military member does for us to protect our country and we honor them and we’re here to help them raise their child,” Aziz said.

April is also Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month and FFSC is holding a Stroll for Safety event April 28 at 11 a.m., at the MWR Sports Complex.

This is the first time for this event on NSAB – which will have parents walk around the track pushing strollers.

“We’re then going to talk about different safety topics,” Rocha said, mentioning topics such as distracted parenting, children’s electronic usage and household safety.

Rocha said it’s a good way for people to meet other parents in the area.

“This is not an installation where most families are living [on base] so we’re always looking for ways to bring people together to build those networks and support systems,” Rocha said.

Beyond the overgrown weeds and a leaning chainlink fence, colorful painted basketball backboards stand out in a neighborhood park.

The bold red, blue and yellow patterns are outlined in black â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the signature mark of artist Troy Summerell.

His trademark OnieTonie Designs decorate the outside wall of his studio at 536 Virginia Beach Blvd. in the ViBe Creative District and can be seen in Norfolkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s NEON District on Granby Street. His painted surf-

boards with ďŹ sh-scale-inspired patterns hang in local coffee shops, too.

Summerell had driven past this basketball court many times on his way to the Oceanfront. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d look over at the dull, white backboards visible from Interstate 264 near Lynnhaven Parkway. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A blank canvas,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The tattered nets falling off the rims bothered him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were in terrible shape,â&#x20AC;? he said.

About six weeks ago, Summerell purchased new nets for a few dollars, and with his ladder, paint and brushes, he headed to Doyle Way Park.

Two 90-minute "Cooking with the Greeks" classes will be held at 5 p.m.

Grilling kale couldn't be easier. You can adapt virtually any of your favorite kale recipes to grilling by tossing the kale with the recipe seasonings and some oil. Arrange the seasoned leaves in a single layer on the grill and they'll cook to crispy splendor in just minutes.

5. Cheese – A slice of gooey melted cheese is the crowning glory atop your grilled burger, but cheese can also handle the grill on its own, and be a delicious, different side dish or appetizer. EDWARDS NABS FOURTH VICTORY AT ‘CRAZY’ BRISTOL

While his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates were experiencing right-front tire failures and other misfortunes, Carl Edwards had what appeared to be a relatively easy ride in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, April 17.

Edwards started on the pole and led 276 of the race’s 500 laps, including the final 104, to get his fourth career Sprint Cup victory on the high-banked half-mile oval.

But Edwards said in his post-race interviews that his Sunday drive wasn’t as free of stress as it might have seemed.

“At no point did I feel like I had the race under control,” he said. “This place [Bristol] is crazy. When you’re sitting in the driver’s seat, everything is so fast. You can hop over the rubber or get sideways or have trouble at any moment, and the guys – at 15-second laps – close in quickly.

“I at no point felt comfortable. It’s just so easy to mess up here. I guess I was on edge the entire time. For me, it was a really tough race in the car. I felt like I had to go really hard.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. had to go really hard, too, to finish second.

An electrical problem on the initial start put him almost three laps down, but he recovered to take the runner-up spot over Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott and Trevor Bayne.

Earnhardt said a problem with the device that cuts off his car in the event of a stuck throttle was the culprit.

“I engaged that system to kill the throttle,” he said. “I was warming the

Things are getting close on Season 22 of Dancing with the Stars, but UFC strawweight Paige VanZant and her partner Mark Ballas continue to reside near the top of the leaderboard.

On last week’s Disney-themed episode, Team Pow Right in the Kisser closed out the show with

brakes up like I always do, and apparently I applied too much pressure and it killed the motor.

“We’ll work on that and maybe raise that threshold a little bit, because I wasn’t really using the brake that much.”

Earnhardt said his strong surge at the finish had as much to do with being able to restart in the preferred outside groove as anything.

“We got real lucky the last three restarts to be on the outside line,” Earnhardt said. “We restarted 10th, sixth and fourth, and when you restart fourth, you’re typically going to come out in second place after that. I was hoping we didn’t have any more cautions after that. So it was good. We’ll take it.”

It was a career-best Cup finish for the rookie Elliott and the first Top-5 finish for Bayne since his Daytona 500 victory in 2011.

Edwards, who now has four Bristol victories and 26 wins overall in his Cup career, said he did worry about his tires after seeing his teammates Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch have right-front failures that put them out of contention.

“There was some concern, but for some reason with our car we didn’t have any of those issues,” Edwards said.

Busch’s tire problems and resulting impacts with the wall ended his Sprint Cup win streak at two, and it happened at one of his best tracks. He said he wasn’t sure what caused the failures.

“We had a really good car [Saturday], and we were fastest in practice,” he said. “I felt really good about things for [Sunday].

“Not a day we were hoping for.”

This week offered the potential for a shake-up to the standings, as it was “America’s Switch Up,” with viewers voting for new pairings between stars and professionals, creating a situation that feels like a return to Week One, where partners have to get comfortable with each other in a hurry.

Vocabulary changes, dynamics are different and chemistry has to be manufactured in a matter of days or else the dances are going to be off and teams that have been rolling could stumble – without dancing with one another.

For Edwards, the victory was his first since being paired with crew chief Dave Rogers at Joe Gibbs Racing. He said the No. 19 team is a strong one.

Making things more interesting this week is that VanZant’s top female competition, Ginger, was paired with her pro, Mark, creating a one-week situation where Team Pow Right in the Kisser were competing against each other at the top of the standings.

And their Salsa was really, really good, earning a combined score of 32 to put them in the lead through the first four pairs.

This week, America decided to pair “12 Gauge” with Sasha Farber, the regular professional of Facts of Life star Kim Fields, for a Rumba that forced VanZant to really work outside her comfort zone for the first time all season.

Whatever hesitation there was in rehearsals was gone when they hit the floor, as the new partners produced a Rumba that earned big applause from the audience, but mixed reviews from the judges.

“You are more than capable of winning the show, in my opinion,” Maks started, who was focused on technique and correct movements all night. “This is a Rumba and there was one step from Rumba in this routine. I have a problem with that.”

“You’re sexy and I know it,” Bruno gushed. “Not just that, you played it beautifully. It was sensual and romantic. I loved it. You were really

dancing from your heart and I loved it.”

Carrie Ann was on board with this one-week version of Pow Right in the Kisser as well, telling VanZant, “Your quality of movement is so multi-dimensional; you’re able to be fierce and feminine in one moment. I love watching you dance and I think as a partnership, you guys were really spot on tonight.”

But Len wasn’t as excited by the performance, even though he still had good things to say about VanZant overall.

“You’re a lovely dancer – you’re clean, you’re precise, you’ve got beautiful timing,” he started. “But you’ve got to work more on selling it to me and be more emotional. I want to see it coming out more. I want to see you dance more. It was acceptable, but it wasn’t exceptional.”

Despite his somewhat critical thoughts, Len joined Carrie Ann and Bruno in awarding the group an eight, while Maks gave them a seven, bringing their total to 31 and leaving them in the middle of the pack for the week.

No eliminations this week, so tune in next week to see how things go when Team Pow Right in the Kisser is reunited.
