The Navy, local business and civic organizations will celebrate Fleet Week Hampton Roads 2012, Oct. 12 - 20, with a variety of events that honor the outstanding contributions and selfless sacrifices of sea service members and their families. Fleet Week Hampton Roads, held each October in conjunction with the Navy birthday, celebrates and recognizes the sacrifices and contributions of our sea services, past and present, made by our Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen who are neighbors, volunteers and citizens actively working to enhance the quality of life for Hampton Roads. “This run will take people out of their every day comfort zone of normal physical training and force them to push their bodies to the
limit,” said Glenn Nelson, MWR Athletic and Fitness Director and Grunt Run race director. The course is more than five miles long and will consist of mud crawls, wall climbs, an ammo can carry, barrier jumps and a few other surprising obstacles. The run, which attracted approximately 500 people last year, entailed various planning components, such as developing a planning team, setting up meeting dates, assigning different areas of responsibility, setting up marketing, designing artwork for the flyers and Tshirts, and establishing volunteer requirements. “Basically an event such as this requires a lot of planning and team work,” said Nelson. The run is free for the military community without a T-shirt purchase; the military community with a T-shirt purchase is $15; the general public without a Tshirt purchase is $20; and the general public with a T-shirt purchase is $30. Participants can run individually or as part of a co-ed team. “This event creates an opportunity for some family fun,” said Nelson. “In addition to the actual run, we will have a rock climbing wall, corn hole and bouncing ride. Most of all, this event gives base personnel a chance to connect with other members who are stationed here.”

The 2012 Hampton Roads Navy Ball, proudly hosted again this year by The Flagship, Inc, will be held on Oct. 13 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott in Downtown Norfolk. This event promises to be the one of the premiere events of Fleet Week.
This formal dinner dance will celebrate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the Navy’s 237th birthday. Force Master Chief James Williams, Force Master Chief, Naval Surface Force Atlantic will serve as the master of ceremonies.
Rear Adm. Tim Alexander, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic will introduce this year’s keynote speaker, Adm. William E. Gortney, Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces. The official program will also include formal toasts as well as the traditional

As we celebrate our Navy’s 237th birthday, our history and heritage forms our identity, telling us who we are and what we stand for. Our core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment have been passed down from our founders, who charged the Navy with the solemn duty to serve as the “shield” of our republic. The first real test our Navy faced was during the War of 1812. This war began at sea when United States ships were ordered to heave to upon the high seas and U.S. citizens were forcefully taken, or impressed, into the crews of another nation’s ships. The great battles that followed proved the fighting mettle of our Sailors and the cutting edge of our ship designs. These battles established both free trade and free navigation as critical national interests of our country – interests that endure to this day. The warrior characteristics of cunning and boldness exhibited in 1812 inspire our Sailors of today’s Navy as they continue to serve around the world. The War of 1812 served as a critical turning point for our Navy. On this 237th birthday of our Navy, we have the honor to serve in the greatest maritime fighting force the world has ever seen, but we do so with humility, continuing to build upon the framework those fighting Sailors forged before us. History teaches us that with great power comes great responsibility. ■ Navy origins The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress established on Oct. 13, 1775, by authorizing the procurement, fitting out, manning and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America. The legislation also established a naval committee to supervise the work. All together, the Continental Navy numbered some 50 ships over the course of the war, with approximately 20 warships active at its maximum strength.

The event is open to the public and includes ship tours aboard the USS Bataan (LHD 5), USS Ross (DDG 71) and USS Nicholas (FFG 47); military static displays; live entertainment by the Fleet Forces Band, Singing Crusaders and Deloreans; car show with cash prizes; and new for 2012, a chowder competition. NAVSTA Norfolk’s Gate 2 will open for public access beginning at 9 a.m. Registration for the car show is currently being accepted by MWR. This year, there will be 14 classes including: 1940-1974, all Mustang, all MOPAR, all Sports

the Chowder Cup Challenge, a cooking competition for best chowder that is open to the ďŹ rst 20 commands that register. Each command entering the competition will be issued a check for $200 to pay for chowder ingredients. Detailed receipts and change must be turned in the day of the event to the event coordinator. The following competition rules have been established to “level the playing ďŹ eldâ€? and challenge team strategy: â– Commands will be allowed up to, but no more than, four hours for cooking preparation on the day of the event. â– Cooking preparation must be done on-site. For visitors who enjoyed the opportunity to see a local naval installation during last months’s NAS Oceana Air Show, another opportunity to visit a Navy base and enjoy another family-friendly event is just around the corner. The annual Fleet Week Chili Cook-off, being held at Dam Neck Annex this year, takes place on Oct. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is open to the general public and offers some of the best tasting chili on the East Coast – with more than 20 military teams competing for top honors. This year’s event coincides with the 237th birthday of the Navy. Admission and parking are free for the cook-off, although there will be small charge for the chili samples. Although conflicts with schedules at the Oceana’s Main Gate Park and other Fleet Week Hampton Roads events meant moving the location, NAS Oceana Commanding Officer Capt. Bob Geis felt strongly he should host it again this year. “This has been a great event, traditionally held at Oceana, and we would like to continue to show our support to the public and have the public enjoy Dam Neck Annex,” he said. “It’s a great event, it’s a fantastic venue. We will provide the same access [to the public] as we have at the Main Gate Park.” The Chili Cook-Off will

The new venue is a roomy location for the teams and offers a picnic area for visitors to sit and enjoy their chili samples, along with a playground for children. “It’s a highly-desired location,” said Geis. The Chili Cook-Off is being sponsored by the Jet Observer, the official Navy newspaper of NAS Oceana, Dam Neck Annex and NALF Fentress. “We’re excited to once again support our troops and their families by sponsoring this year’s Chili Cook-off,” said Laura Baxter, publisher and general manager of Military Newspapers of Virginia. “The Chili Cook-Off is part of Fleet Week here in Hampton Roads. It’s a longstanding tradition.” Commands wanting to earn some extra money for their MWR funds have the perfect opportunity with the Chili Cook-Off. The best tasting and most original chili will earn $300 for first, $200 for second and $100 for third place; the big dipper award for the

With the event taking place near Halloween, teams in previous years have gotten into the season with everything from the ghoulish spirit of the month to “Roadkill Chili,” making the competition for the showmanship award as fierce as the competition for the best chili. “It’s a great opportunity for healthy competition,” said Geis about the command teams which compete year after year. For the teams with early risers, the cooking area opens at 6:30 a.m., but teams are only allowed a maximum of four hours to cook up their own special stews. And nearly everything must be cooked onsite. The exceptions can be mixing and grinding of
spices and canned or bottle tomatoes and pepper sauces. While each team must bring their own cooking items, such as pots and pans, they will receive a $200 gift card to Farm Fresh to purchase all of their ingredients. Baxter urges teams to use every dollar of those gift cards to stock up on ingredients, mentioning how in past years teams have run out of samples long before the competition formally ended. “If you want to taste some great chili, you need to head out to see us. As a previous judge, I can tell you it’s extremely hard to choose which team has the best chili,” she said. “That’s why I’m glad we give out eight awards and almost $2,000 in prize money.” Each team will provide a quart of chili for the panel of 10 judges to begin sam-
pling at 1 p.m. The winners will be announced near the end of the event. “There’s always a great smorgasbord of flavors,” said Geis, who has served as a judge for several of the competitions. “Stews over the years have included secret ingredients of venison, unique varieties of tomatoes and spices, chocolate and “mystery meats.” In addition to all the chili samples, MWR will offer reasonably-priced concessions on-site. Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce celebrates the 2012 Samuel T. Northern Military Citizen of the Year award The Samuel T. Northern Military Citizen of the Year (MCOY) luncheon held at the Norfolk Marriott Waterside hotel, Oct. 12. Doors open for registration at 11:30 a.m., program begins at Noon. Samuel T. Northern, a local businessman, devoted most of his life to strengthening the relationship between the local community and the military. Since 1955, this award has been given annually to recognize the military citizen who has made the most significant contribution in the area of community service. Each year, commands based throughout Hampton Roads are asked to nominate individuals for this honor. Members of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce’s Armed Forces Committee then select the winner based upon their full, active and sustained participation in activities that benefit the community. Nominees are involved in everything from coaching youth baseball teams, youth mentoring, fundraising, emergency medical services and many other community programs.
Air Traffic Controller 3rd Class Brian J. Cain Naval Station Norfolk Through Adopt-A-Street, Cain successfully led 58 volunteers in collecting more than 595 pounds of waste and debris over a span of 150 total man hours. He personally volunteered more than 200 hours for various assignments. With the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he managed funds, personnel records and coordinated community welfare programs. As the command coordinator for the annual Toys for Tots toy drive, he helped facilitate the program providing toys to less fortunate children in Hampton Roads.
Cryptologic Technician (Networks) 1st Class Clifford D. Stout Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command Stout is the president of the Board of Directors for Down Syndrome Association of Hampton Roads (DSAHR). Among his many duties, he planned community outreach projects and social opportunities for families and individuals with Down Syndrome. He also volunteered with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, ensuring food safety of items that have been donated through a food drive.

Cason USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) Cason has volunteered with TFC Recycling and the Chesapeake Rotary Club for Paint Your Heart Out, helping the less fortunate within the community. Mounger United States Fleet Forces Command Mounger has volunteered numerous hours for Meals On Wheels in Norfolk, which resulted in the continued support of the military and surrounding community. He also assisted with the Point Harbor Community Church Children Christmas party and the invitational Basketball fundraiser for the Spirit of Basketball Camp, and volunteered with the 2011 Naval Station Norfolk Clean the Bay Day.
Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Eric J. Brown Precommissioning Unit Arlington (LPD 24) Brown has volunteered more than 250 hours at the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia’s Center at Norfolk International Airport. He has also served as a tour guide for both the Hampton Roads Naval Museum and Nauticus. For Habitat for Humanity, Brown volunteered last fall and winter when volunteers were scare due to inclement weather.
Logistics Specialist 1st Class Elisa D. Tillett Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic Tillet’s work has included not only volunteering, but also ensuring that there were enough volunteers to assist in the various events that were held by the Salvation Army. With Meals On Wheels in Norfolk , she volunteered more than 300 hours of service using her own vehicle, gas and time delivering meals to persons who were homebound and unable to prepare meals for themselves.
Information Systems Technician 1st Class Matthew J. Moore Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic. Navy-Marine Corps Intranet Detachment Norfolk. Moore packed over 1,800 registration packets with Banana Republic Lynnhaven, distributed time chips to runners and participated as a course marshal on race days for the CHKD: Run/Walk for the Kids. He also assisted Access Aids with set up, breakdown and delivery of silent auction items and the collection of funds from winners.
Logistics Specialist 1st Class Sacoyia T. Aiken United States Fleet Forces Command Aiken was responsible for distributing, tracking and collecting Angel Tree Tags, as well as donations for the Salvation Army Angel Tree program. She’s an Adopt-A-Highway volunteer, removing trash and debris along a one-mile stretch of Terminal Blvd. leading to NSA Hampton Roads. She is also a Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Youth League basketball and volleyball “Team Mom” and a youth mentor.

Risner Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic With Drug Education for Youth (DEFY), Risner has mentored youths with the life skills necessary to deter at-risk behaviors associated with substance abuse, gangs and other negative influences. She also volunteers with the VA Medical Hospital, helping elderly veterans cope and deal with day-to-day activities and has authored the book “Mommy the Sailor” to help children cope with separations.
Operations Specialist 1st Class Eboni N. Kennedy Tactical Air Control Squadron Two One Kennedy lead Sailors in operating saws, hanging vinyl siding and painting for Habitat for Humanity. For Union Mission Ministries, she coordinated two toy drives, placed collection boxes, distributed flyers and collected/distributed 5,000 toys. She manned the finish-line during two fundraising events, including the Hampton Roads Walk to Stop Diabetes and Tour de Cure bicycle race. She collected, sorted, bagged and distributed food to clients within community for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia.
Master-at-Arms 1st Class Nathan P. Connor Naval Station Norfolk Connor volunteered with Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society assisting personnel of the naval services – active, retired and their eligible family members – to achieve financial self-sufficiency and find solutions to emergency financial needs. He also assisted in the USS Wisconsin BB-64 Restoration Project Liberty, and has devoted more than 200 hours mentoring youths in his church.

Tyler United States Fleet Forces Command During his time with Meals On Wheels, Tyler delivered hot meals to eight senior citizens (elderly and handicapped) who need them, each day that he worked. He also served beverages and food to patrons before, during and after the Tides games for multiple picnics per day for the National Naval Officers Association (NNOA). He volunteered with the Granby High School JROTC and Larchmont Elementary School in Norfolk.
Information Systems Technician 1st Class Ira B. Trussell Assault Craft Unit Four While volunteering for Jewish Family Service, Trussell collected items that were used to make meal bags for delivering food to elderly and disabled individuals who live alone. With Boy Scouts of America, he has helped mold young men with various leadership and lifesaving skills, and trained them in five different areas as a merit badge counselor. He has also done work for the Ohef Sholom Temple soup kitchen and Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia.
Operations Specialist 2nd Class Morgan A. Gallapis Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads Gallapis worked nearly 80 hours for Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg, helping with home construction and repair, including painting, minor carpentry and small electrical jobs. With the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula, she served as a warehouse volunteer, breaking down pallets of food, sorting and stocking food donations among other duties. She has also volunteered with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) and the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL).
Quartermaster 2nd Class Rafael Acosta Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Acosta has volunteered more than 30 hours to the Granby Masonic Temple, where he provided canned, boxed, fresh, foods and goods to the homeless and less fortunate families. He also coached baseball for 12 children four to six years old for Ocean View Little League, where his direct efforts help to provide healthy and beneficial recreation alternatives for the youth of Hampton Roads.

Galarza Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek - Fort Story With Habitat For Humanity, Galarza worked in tandem with local groups to organize volunteers and identify people in need of homes. He participated on three home building projects, volunteering construction, plumbing and landscaping services. He also volunteered as crowd control and hydration station worker during Wounded Warrior fundraising events.
Religious Program Specialist 1st Class Gary G. Denette II Naval Station Norfolk Denette serves as the Head Junior Varsity Football Coach and Assistant Varsity Baseball Coach for Churchland High School in Portsmouth, where he is a positive male role model to 107 teenage boys. For a National Multiple Sclerosis Walk, Denette orchestrated 27 volunteers and dedicated 108 hours of time to assist the Multiple Sclerosis Director in coordinating this event. He has also volunteered with Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Lydia H. Roper Assistant Living Home.
Marine Staff Sgt. Nathan Davilmar School of Music, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek - Fort Story As a Worship Team Leader at Virginia Beach’s Real Life Church, Davilmar provides arranging, composing and rehearsing of the musical selections for the Worship Team, as well as logistical planning of various in-house and community-wide events. He managed logistics for, and arranged, led and provided musical entertainment for a Real Life Church Outreach ministry to the Virginia Beach Health Care Rehabilitation Center Nursing Home at Christmas time.
Sonar Technician (Surface) 2nd Class Kyla E. Knorr USS Laboon (DDG 58) For Norfolk Botanical Gardens World of Wonder Children’s Garden, Knorr spent time mentoring and educating young children. At Nauticus, Knorr serves as a tour guide, explaining exhibits and known facts, aids in outdoor activity clean-up after ceremonies and events, and general indoor areas. For the Helping Hands Holocaust Survivor Center, she repaired plaster in several room at the center, as well cleaned rooms for elderly.
Sonar Technician (Surface) 1st Class Gary James Newsom, Jr. Commander Undersea Surveillance As a volunteer EMT for Emergency Medical Services Virginia Beach, Newsom stands four 12-hour shifts a month. He responds to all 911 calls and delivers both basic and advanced lifesaving services to the public. In addition, he also signs on for extra time in various community events, such as high school games, local races and large city-sponsored activities. Due to his quick lifesaving actions, Newsom received the Life Saving Award.
Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Alfredo Esquivel III Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek- Fort Story Esquivel helped set up and provided extra security for an Easter Sunday service. For the Shamrock Half Marathon, he helped with the set up and security as well. Esquivel also cooks food as a departmental moral booster for Security Department every month.

Leverret Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek - Fort Story Leverret mentors third grade students and distributes school supplies for six classrooms at Jacox Elementary School in Norfolk. He has volunteered with Wounded Warrior House Chesapeake, gathering shirts and supplies for shipments, and also volunteered with the ASYMCA Mud Run and National Night Out.

Gomez Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek - Fort Story With the Bryant & Stratton College Veterans Affairs Association, Gomez has supported veterans in the Hampton Roads area by coordinating food and clothing drives. She has also volunteered 45 hours to the Holiday Assistance Program, which provides Sailors, Soldiers, Marines and Coastguardsman in Hampton Roads area with meal assistance.

Anderson Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek - Fort Story For the Little Creek American Little League , Anderson is the Vice President of Shetland Division and Head Coach of a youth baseball league and team, where he coordinates teams, assigns coaches, processes background checks for coaches, and prepares fields for games and tournaments. He has served as military liaison with the league and coordinated fundraisers for sponsorships.
