U.S. carrier-based naval aviation returned to the region Dec. 14, as the ships and embarked squadrons of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (CSG) completed a transit through the Suez Canal
and entered U.S. 5th Fleet's area of responsibility. Commander of CSG-8 Rear Adm. Bret Batchelder said he feels that following the workup cycle the strike group is prepared to conduct any mission. "We had a highly successful month in the [U.S.] 6th Fleet area of operation culmi-
nating with a successful Suez transit," Batchelder said. "This region offers many opportunities to collaborate with partners and allies. Our combined efforts, resources and shared experiences foster a more stable and prosperous region." Sailors aboard Truman viewed the Egyptian coastline
as the ship transited the 120mile long artificial channel connecting the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Following the passage, the crew members received certificates recognizing the accomplishment. With nearly 30 percent of government vehicles being flex-fuel vehicles, the regional transportation director wants to remind those driving government flexfuel vehicles to fill up with E85 fuel where it is available. Referring to drivers who don’t realize they are supposed to be filling up their flex-fuel vehicles with E85 where it is available, Mike Lienemann said, “I suspect that the majority of folks just don't know.” Lienemann is the Base Support Vehicles and Equipment Product Line coordinator for Navy Region MidAtlantic. Through executive order, the government is required to find ways to save on energy and reduce its dependency on foreign oil. One way the government is working to do that is by purchasing flex fuel, hybrid-electric and electric vehicles that operate using alternative fuels and other alternative energy sources.
