Military and community members, along with their families, attended the 24th annual Grand Illumination Ceremony at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story’s (JEBLC-FS) historic Cape Henry Lighthouse. “This event was not just for the community located within the base,” JEBLC-FS Deputy Commander Lt. Col. John Penree said. “We have a very diverse group of people here that have come together as one cohesive family for the start of the holidays.” Santa traveled through base housing waving to excited children in attendance before finally arriving at the Cape Henry Chapel. After gathering inside, Chaplain Lt. Cary Shinn led a prayer for everyone in attendance followed by a children’s choir performance. The Grand Illumination has become a hallmark for not only the base, but for the city of Virginia Beach. The Grand Illumination also featured, the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band and new events, including a petting zoo and pony rides. “We were really lucky this year with the amount MC2 John Paul Kotara of participation we received from different communities,” Training Ranges and Readiness Officer The historic Cape Henry Lighthouse is illuminated by a laser light show during the 24th annual Grand Illumination at Joint ExpeditionHeather Lawrence said. “We have so many commuary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. nity partners that contributed to this event tonight,

including the Military Welfare and Recreation office. This gave us the ability to provide everybody with new events that should be fun for everyone.” A laser light show was used this year instead of the traditional holiday decorations from the lighthouse. “We are trying something new for this year, to hopefully encourage more people to come out and see what is going on at this event,” Penree said. Toward the end of the occasion Commander of JEBLC-FS Capt. Frank Hughlett led a speech about the history of event and the importance it has become throughout the years. After the conclusion of his comments, Hughlett led a count down to the grand finale. As the last number was counted the Cape Henry Lighthouse was illuminated. As the night drew to a close, families and friends returned to the chapel to converse and receive hot chocolate and cake. “From the families who have military members deployed, to the community that is here to share in this event, this really brought families together in celebration of the holidays.” Hughlett said. “The whole community embraced this event.” The historic Cape Henry Lighthouse’s construction was authorized using federally approved funds by President George Washington. Standing near the First Landing site, where English settlers arrived in 1607, the lighthouse guided maritime commerce at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.
