Tocelebratethefirstmeal,thecrewwelcomedtheship’s sponsor Susan DiMarco who is a New Jersey resident, retired dentist and the wife of former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson to dine with them. The menu includedsomeofthecrew’svotedfavorites,suchasbarbeque brisket, baked catfish, cornbread, accompanying side dishes and coveted “hard pack” ice cream.

“The first meal is a meaningful milestone in the submarine’sconstructionasitrepresentsthestartofwhatwillbe thousandsofmealsservedaboardNewJerseyasthecrew preparestobringherintothefleet,”saidJasonWard,NNS vice president of Virginia-class submarine construction. “We understand the important mission ahead for New Jerseyandwelookforwardtodeliveringthiscriticalasset in service of the nation.

“It’srefreshingtoseethecrewtransitiontoworkingand eating onboard as we achieve the first step in bringing the ship to life,” said Cmdr Steve Halle, commanding officer of the pre-commissioning unit. “We are excited to share this milestone with our sponsor, Susan, her son, and some commissioningmembersaswegrowourrelationshipwith the state of New Jersey.”

New Jersey was christened in November 2021 at NNS.

It is the first submarine designed with modifications for genderintegration.Followingsuccessfulseatrialslaterthis year,NewJerseywillbethe11thVirginia-classsubmarine delivered by NNS.

NNS is one of only two shipyards capable of designing andbuildingnuclear-poweredsubmarinesfortheU.S.Navy

Thechange,effectiveJuly1,expandsthis protectiontoanystationaryvehicledisplaying hazard lights, warning signs (like an emergency triangle), or flares, AAA said. An example of a situation like this might beadriverwhopullsovertothesideofthe road to fix a flat tire.

Virginia law (§ 46.2-921.1) states that “uponapproachingastationaryvehiclethat is displaying a flashing, blinking or alternating blue, red or amber light or lights,” drivers shall:

“Onahighwayhaving at leastfour lanes, at least two of which are intended for traffic proceeding as the approaching vehicle, proceed with caution and, if reasonable withdueregardforsafetyandtrafficconditions, yield the right of way by making a lane change into a lane not adjacent to the stationary vehicle or,

“If changing lanes would be unreasonable or unsafe, proceed with due caution and maintain a safe speed for highway conditions.”

A single violation of the “Move Over” law is punishable as a traffic infraction. #moveroverslowdownva
