Creek-Fort Story (JEBLC-FS) base chapel to recognize April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) by hosting an informational event at the base chapel on April 2.

During his presentation, Fisher discussed his childhood, including his birth in prison, father’s death, and his adolescent years in the foster care system of Cleveland, Ohio. He went on to talk about how he and his foster siblings were mo-

lested and sexually assaulted starting at the age of five.

Fisher credits his time in the Navy for getting him off the streets and into a better life. However, after multiple fights with other Sailors due to past hardships, Fisher was on the verge of being dismissed from the Navy. With help from

Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Peter Whitaker made history March 20, when he became the first enlisted crewmember to be qualified as underway officer of the deck (OOD) aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS Arlington (LPD 24).

“I remember when I was a deck seaman standing watch in the pilot house; I always wanted to be the OOD,” said Whitaker. “It has been a dream of mine and I hope that my junior Sailors will dream big like I did and continue to reach for higher goals.”

“The importance of the OOD cannot be overstated,” said Lt. Cmdr. Emily Bassett, Arlington executive officer. “The person standing the watch is not only responsible for the ship, but the lives of every Sailor and Marine aboard. The commanding officer must be able to implicitly trust the OOD to keep the ship running effectively and safely.”

Navy announces accountability actions following Mahan JAGMAN results Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Public Affairs NORFOLK

Immediately following the fatal shooting of Master at Arms 2nd Class Mark Mayo in March 2014, aboard USS Mahan (DDG-72), corrective actions were implemented on Naval Station Norfolk, and all installations within the Mid-Atlantic Region. The summary of those actions were released to the media on March 17.

On April 7, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, Rear Adm. Rick Williamson, announced the completion of administrative actions against Naval Station Norfolk military personnel. Additionally, Williamson initiated discipline actions against civilian personnel last week.

Capt. Robert E. Clark, commanding officer of Naval Station Norfolk, received appropriate administrative measures. He will remain in command of the installation.

The Naval Station Norfolk security officer was relieved of his duties.

He has been temporarily assigned to Navy Region Mid-Atlantic. Cmdr.

lantic security director, has assumed duties as the Naval Station Norfolk security officer.

A petty officer second class Master at Arms on duty at Gate 5 conducting Random Anti-Terrorism Measures the night of the shooting has since transferred to an overseas assignment. The petty officer, however, may still face administrative or disciplinary actions.

Of the five Department of Defense civilian gate guards on duty at the time of the shooting, two have resigned and three were issued a Notice of Proposed Discipline this month.

“We owe it to petty officer Mark Mayo’s legacy, to the men and women who serve on our installations, and to the American taxpayer, to ensure we protect our workforce and the assets the nation entrusts to us,” said the Navy’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Commander, Rear Adm. Rick Williamson.

“Immediately following the shooting last year, immediate corrective actions were implemented on Naval Station Norfolk, and all installations within my region, to ensure an event like this does not happen again. I take my responsibility seriously as the commander of the installations in my

region and it is my responsibility to hold those who failed in their duties accountable.

“The entire investigative process into the events last year was a deliberate and thoughtful one that took time to ensure it was done right. Now that the formal investigation has been completed, I have taken appropriate disciplinary and administrative actions,” said Williamson.

According to the investigation, failures to follow security procedures at an entry control point allowed an unauthorized civilian, Jeffrey Tyrone Savage, on to the base and led to the March 24, 2014, shooting on board USS Mahan moored at the Naval Station that killed petty officer Mark Mayo. Savage made his way to the pier and onto the ship where he attacked the ship’s Petty Officer of the Watch (POOW), took her pistol and shot Mayo as he attempted to protect the POOW. Savage was shot by the ship’s security personnel.

The Navy made changes to security at the installation in the immediate aftermath of the shooting and continues to review processes and procedures to prevent future incident.

Naval Weapons Station (WPNSTA) Yorktown takes sexual assault very seriously and wants to ensure every Sailor and civilian at the installation knows that this type of behavior will not be tolerated and support is there for the victims of sexual assault. This is something that is practiced each and every day aboard the installation, but becomes “laser focused” during the month of April.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM). The theme set forth by the DOD for 2015 is “Eliminate Sexual Assault: Know your part. Do your part.” According to the DOD, the effort will focus on raising awareness and highlight prevention of sexual violence with an emphasis on bystander intervention.

“A lot has changed over the past few years,” said Shannon Minor, sexual assault prevention and response (SAPR) victim advocate aboard WPNSTA Yorktown. “The Victims Legal Council (VLC) program came on board,

providing individuals with their own personal JAG who specializes in sexual assault and victims no longer have to testify in Article 32 hearings. Their sworn statements, taken by NCIS, can be used instead. It [SAPR program] is still growing and developing in a good way.”

During the month of April, commands are encouraged to organize events to highlight the awareness and prevention of sexual assault.

WPNSTA Yorktown is hosting/participating in numerous events, both on base and in the local community. The installation is hosting a 5K run at Cheatham Annex on April 10, and a track and field day at Huntington Hall in Newport News on April 24, which will bring Sailors and civilians together for fun activities while learning more about the SAPR program.

Additionally, Sailors and civilians will be participating in the annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” at the Peninsula Town Center in Hampton, where men walk one mile in women’s high heel shoes in support of the Center for Sexual Assault Survivors.

“We have great activities and awareness events to really get more people engaged in the program,” Minor explained. “The theme

let’s all the Sailors ‘know their part’ against sexual assault and ‘do their part’ to engage in bystander intervention.”

According to Minor, there will also be special desserts served at the galley in April, draped with teal ribbons, the color representing SAAPM, as well as “Teal Tuesday” on April 7, that will encourage civilian employees to wear teal in support of the SAPR program. One of the most visual representations on display during the month of April is the Clothesline Project.

“The survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault design a shirt with different messages regarding the abuse they experienced and empowerment,” Minor added. “We also have shirts for advocates, for someone to take a stand against violence.” The shirts will be displayed at Fleet and Family Support Center Yorktown and Newport News, the Branch Health Clinic at Yorktown and Huntington Hall.

NMCP’S CRISIS STABILIZATION PROGRAM OFF TO STEADY START

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth’s (NMCP) Crisis Stabilization Program has successfully completed its pilot phase and now continues to help patients as a permanent program, as of April 1. Within the Directorate of Mental Health, the program saved more than $200,000 during the pilot.

The program provides six days of intense outpatient therapy for active duty service members. Those who are eligible have presented to the emergency room with suicidal ideations, or they have been hospitalized with an acute psychiatric crisis, but are now well enough to be discharged from the Inpatient Mental Health Ward and would benefit from continued therapy.

Beth-ann Vealey considers the program a step up from emergency room (ER) care and a step down from hospitalization, helping patients recover from a psychiatric crisis immediately and improve their ability to stabilize in a short time.

“I developed the program specific to NMCP because we frequently have patients with psychiatric crisis presenting to the emergency department, and the inpatient ward is consistently full,” Vealey said.

“This program offers patients who have an acute psychiatric crisis immediate access to high quality psychiatric care and related services.”

The program offers daily clinical oversight and ongoing support for six days. Multiple therapeutic interventions decreases isolation and behaviorally activates the patients, which results in the improved safety and well-being of pro-

Data from the pilot shows the program’s positive impact on patients. There was a dramatic 75 percent increase in resiliency to stress, a 55 percent decrease in functional impairment, a 30 percent decrease in depression symptoms, a 22 percent decrease in anxiety symptoms, and a 13 percent improvement in quality of sleep.

Program staff consists of five psychiatric technicians, a clinical psychologist, the program manager and a psychiatrist for five to 10 hours a week for patients who need medication. Changes during the pilot phase included the addition of art and recreation therapy, and increasing patient involvement for the psych techs.

They also streamlined the screening process for patients coming into the program after their discharge from the inpatient ward.

“They are not going through discharge and then separately screened to be in the program – we do it at the same time,” Vealey said. “It creates a ‘warm handoff’ and coordination of care, and develops a better rapport with patients.”

While half of the patients are referred by the ER and half by the inpatient ward, Vealey said the program currently has a capacity of eight patients per day, and they manage the numbers as enrollment and discharge is continuous. Prior to discharge,

she sets up patients with outpatient services for continued care and to avert future crises.

“In the after-care program, patients can attend Wednesday meetings and receive ongoing support as they continue to maintain stabilization on their own,” Vealey said. “We also correspond with them weekly through email for 90 days to support and encourage them to use healthy coping skills.”

As Vealey developed program materials and trained technicians, she stressed the importance of treating these patients in a way that shows appreciation for those who wear the uniform. She wanted to look at fitness issues and their work environment while trying to work with people and empathize in a nonjudgmental way about what it’s like to be in acute psychiatric state and ask for help.

“I’m excited for the patients,” Vealey said. “Within a week, they can go from being suicidal to feeling so much better, understanding how they began to develop those ideations, resolving feelings and being excited to go back to a work environment.”

During the pilot, Directorate of Mental Health staff supported Vealey’s vision for the program. “They have just been remarkable; they are open to learning and they ask questions,” Vealey said. “I’ve had good input from staff on ways we can modify based on expe-

riences in the ward.”

To Vealey, it was exciting to conceptualize this program in theory, develop a standard operating procedure, and then watch it come to fruition.

“I am so incredibly fortunate to be given the opportunity to design and implement the program and to work with such a great team,” Vealey said. “Staff has stepped up to the plate for the program, and the quality of clinical services we’ve been providing is really remarkable.”

She credits part of the program’s success with trying to see things from the viewpoint of patients.

“I developed and worked the program with the thought that if I were the person on the other side of the table needing services, how would I want to be treated and what would benefit me most,” she said. “I don’t think people choose to be in a crisis state. Being in the military, it can be difficult to ask for help, because we want to feel like we can take care of own problems and focus on the job at hand. It takes a lot of courage to ask for help, and we try to honor our patients by how we work with them.”

The Directorate of Mental Health won NMCP’s Vikki Garner Memorial Award for Excellence in Quality Improvement, March 19, for the Crisis Stabilization Program.

SURFLANT talks leadership development with VMI midshipmen

Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic (SURFLANT), hosted the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) unit from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), March 30, to promote the development of strong, ethical midshipmen.

Alongside several of his key staff members, the SURFLANT Commander, Rear Adm. Pete Gumataotao, addressed a couple dozen midshipmen in an open forum and spoke about the importance of integrity, procedural compliance, and team building.

“The real test of your relevance is reflected in the actions of your Sailors,” said Gumataotao. “Seek out those who inspire and aspire to excellence and learn from them. Set and exemplify the standards for the Sailors you will lead and they will follow you anywhere.”

The VMI visitors also got to meet and receive guidance from Force Master Chief Suz Whitman and several other SURFLANT staff members.

“I think this was an awesome experience for the midshipmen because the admiral didn’t talk to them as a twostar,” said Cmdr. Randy Zamora, VMI NROTC executive officer. “Instead, he brought it down to their level and made it relatable by recalling what it was like to be a junior officer. They are very intimidated by the fleet but the admiral encouraged them to be confident and gave them guidance on how to be successful.”

Whitman spoke to the midshipmen from the perspective of a chief petty officer and offered advice on how to communicate effectively with their future chiefs.

“We have been there and done that,” said Whitman.

“Listen to your chief; they will not lead you astray. Our sole job as a chief petty officer is to take care of Sailors and that includes you. We are there to mold you, mentor you and motivate you, but more importantly, we are there to make sure you are successful.”

Gumataotao also emphasized the importance of understanding and following standard shipboard operating procedures, doing the right thing under pressure and building their knowledge bases. To conclude the discussion, Gumataotao and the other speakers answered questions about ethical decisions, how to integrate themselves into deployed crews and suggested literature on how to be effective leaders.

“The most important lessons I took away from this experience was team-based leadership and having a questioning attitude as an ensign,” said Midshipman 1st Class Killian Buckley, from Auburn, Massachusetts. “The more we learn, the more effective our warfighting team will be.”

NCHB 13 reserve cargo handlers support peacetime mission in Antarctica NAVELSG Public Affairs

Five Sailors from Navy Cargo Handling Battalion 13 (NCHB 13), one of Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG) reserve battalions had the unique opportunity to participate in Operation Deep Freeze 2015 (ODF15), a peacetime mission in support of the National Science Foundation (NCF).

The reserve Sailors were selected to augment critical requirements with the Navy’s only active duty cargo handling battalion, NCHB 1, in order to support NCF’s research mission at the South Pole.

Chief Hull Technician Tomas Gonzalez from Pelham, Alabama, a tele service representative with the Social Security Administration and Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Andrew Hill from Houston, Texas, and recent graduate from Texas A&M University shared their experiences from ODF15.

Gonzalez, Hill and the rest of the team arrived at Ross Island, Antarctica, on Jan. 23. The cargo handlers set up shop at McMurdo Station, the southern-most navigable harbor in the world.

For many, it may be surprising to know that the Navy has had a rich history in Antarctica for more than half a century.

Beginning in 1955, Seabees began deploying yearly to the continent. As participants in Operation Deep Freeze, their mission was to build and expand scientific bases located on the frozen continent.

The first group included 200 Seabees who distinguished themselves by constructing a 6,000-foot ice runway on McMurdo Sound. Over the years, the mission remains, and the personnel who support it has grown beyond the Seabees to the Navy Reserve and multiple branches of the military.

“I am glad the Navy is involved in Operation Deep Freeze, not just because of our history with it,” said Gonzalez. “We are a very important part of a complicated logistics mission, our work directly impacts multinational scientific research.”

Operation Deep Freeze is unlike any other U.S. military operation. It is one of the military’s most difficult peacetime missions due to the harsh Antarctic environment. The U.S. military is uniquely equipped and trained to operate in such an austere environment.

“Antarctica has a huge impact on comfort,” said Hill.

“The only time I was actually cold was when there would be a work stoppage or mechanical issue and we stopped moving.”

Once on station, the Navy cargo handlers met the Military Sealift Command (MSC) chartered container ship MV Ocean Giant, to offload 20 million pounds of fresh supplies to support the scientists and researchers living yearround in the brutal environment. The cargo handlers worked around the clock for 10 days in the continuous sunlight of the Antarctic summer.

“I hate the cold, but 15 degrees Fahrenheit felt warmer than 40 degrees back home,” said Hill. “There is a complete lack of humidity.”

The weather held between 10 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit during their 14-day stay, despite high winds and cold temperatures, the same operational targets were expected of the mission.

“The ability to safely move cargo in any climate including extreme weather is a very important skill to maintain.” said Gonzalez.

Reserve Sailors have been a rich part of the Navy’s history, working and sacrificing alongside their active duty counterparts accomplishing

missions around the globe in varying conditions and climates.

“We were expected to show up qualified and integrate on day one,” said Hill. “We had lots of interagency contact, as well, and we worked daily with the New Zealand and Australian stevedore’s and truck drivers.”

And while this mission may not have all the comforts of home, reservists jump at the chance to work 12-hour shifts in the harshest living conditions.

“This was my first time on ODF, and, overall it was a great experience,” said Hill.”

For Gonzalez, this marked his second trip in support of ODF, taking part in 2010 as a stevedore, the initial qualification level.

Much

has changed yet remained the same since his last visit, working on his ship supervisor qualification while serving as a hatch captain.

“It takes a long time to qualify in the different hatch team positions,” said Gonzalez. “It creates a special challenge for the active duty battalions due to frequent personnel changes; our reserve battalions have Sailors with many years of cargo handling experience with the same battalions.”

As the select few to visit Antarctica, the highest, driest, windiest, coldest continent in the world, for this one-of-akind mission, these Sailors are simply grateful for the experience.

“How many people in the world can say they have seen

penguins in their natural habitat or witness steam coming off an active volcano on Antarctica?” said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez and Hill both shared the same sentiments for any Sailor or civilian having the opportunity to travel as far south as one can. ”The Navy Reserves have now put me on five of seven continents,” said Hill, “I consider this the most exclusive operation and really the only way I’d ever get to see Antarctica.”

knowledge and skills needed to support the fleet in a variety of logistics missions.

A message from the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy: Chief Petty Officers, On April 1st, we will celebrate 122 years of excellence. One thing that CPOs [chief petty officers] have always excelled at, despite the challenges, is our ability to recognize and implement change.

If I could coin one word for this year’s birthday theme, it would be ‘progress.’ Our Navy is 239 years old – could you imagine where our Navy would be without progress?

We went from wind-powered sails to coal-powered steam. Now we sail under nuclear power. Our aircraft have gone from propeller power to jet power. We went from CPO Initiation to Transition to Induction and now CPO 365.

Without change, there is no progress. Change is not always easy, but that’s OK, because hard is what we do.

George Washington once said, “The harder the conflict, the greater the triumph.”

As CPOs, we have the responsibility to ensure our Navy continues to progress – we owe this to our Nation, our Navy and our people.

Chiefs, I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of you. I’ve had the opportunity to be a member of our CPO Mess for two decades, and I can tell you today with great confidence that our CPO Mess has never been better. You should feel good about who you are, what you represent, and your ability to lead our Sailors.

Fishers story, beyond his molestation as a boy, resonated with Sailors in the audience who found various connections to similar struggles they go through in their own life.

“It was a very inspiring presentation about not only sexual assault but other issues we go through in life,” said Electronics Technician 2nd Class Ben Welsh.

Fisher helped to highlight a key component to eliminating sexual assaults, that being bystander intervention. In order to prevent destructive behaviors, shipmates must look out for each other, both on and off base.

Capt. Frank E. Hughlett, commanding officer of JEBLC-FS, elaborated to the fact that sexual assault awareness and prevention needs to be an everyday effort, and can’t simply be a single month dedicated to awareness.

Little can be done in regards to eliminating sexual assault crimes from the Navy unless these crimes are reported.

“Sexual assault remains the most under reported crime there is,” stated Tina Carter, JEBLC-FS installation sexual assault regional coordinator.

After the event, Fisher spent time answering Sailor’s questions and posing for pictures. Fisher personally thanked every Sailor who asked to take a picture with him, for their service and for the sacrifices they give to defend our country. His fondness and pride for the Navy was prominently on display as he talked to Sailors.

“Coming here to talk is like returning to my alma-mater, I travel around to different bases to speak as often as possible,” said Fisher.

Fisher mentioned, as he was leaving the event, how the Navy gave him so much help and that he hopes that his story today can help Sailors who may be going through similar situations.

After spending a few minutes talking to Fisher and thanking him for his time, Chief Boatswain’s Mate Robin Williams said, “Having him [Fisher] here helps people know they can talk about it and move forward, also to know they are not alone.”

Captain Michael “Jake” Johansson said goodbye to the U.S. Navy during the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Hampton Roads’ Change of Command and Retirement Ceremony at HM-15 (V-70) on March 27. Johansson was relieved by Captain Jack Freeman.

An interesting element to the ceremony included the Master of Ceremonies and Executive Officer, Commander John Williams, reading Johansson’s rank career as Sailors placed hats on the stage to signify that particular time period (top photo).

The motivation and drive has to be very strong to achieve the level of knowledge that is required to be an OOD.” The leading petty officer of Arlington’s Deck Department, First Division, it took Whitaker approximately eight months to complete his OOD qualification. Having a support network that motivated him helped make the difference in realizing his dream.

“I received so much support from both my chain of command and my junior Sailors as I was studying and meeting the requirements for the quali-

fication,” said Whitaker. “The other first class petty officers stood in for me during the various special evolutions I couldn’t attend and my junior Sailors kept the division running and the work going anytime I was on watch.”

McDonough hopes Whitaker is only the first of many Sailors to reach for higher qualifications both inside and outside their ratings.

“I’m hoping that this lights a fire under everyone aboard,” said McDonough.

“We want every Sailor on Arlington to know that if they are motivated and driven enough, there is no qualification out of reach, no matter what their rank.

Whitaker has set an excellent example for the rest of the crew and I hope everyone follows that example.”

Navy kicks off engagement activities with Vietnam

Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) kicked off Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) with the launch of a new Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) website (http://1.usa. gov/1DGEcQy), April 1.

With the NSTC geographic domain extending throughout the country, overseeing Recruit Training Command, Officer Training Command, Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC), which contains more than 160 affiliated colleges and universities, this new SAPR website will

provide “one-stop” shop for SAPR resources.

“At NSTC, we train 98 percent of the Sailors and officers who enter the Navy,” said Capt. Bob Fink, NSTC deputy commander. “Establishing a culture in our Navy that is intolerant of sexual assault and supportive of victims begins with us. The website provides information and training to our commands in order to protect the men and women who are volunteering to serve our nation. By building that culture within our domain, the impact will be seen throughout the fleet as Sailors progress in their careers.”

The design of the website was overseen by Lt. Tara Smallidge, NSTC research

focus on maritime domain awareness, shipboard damage control, submarine rescue, legal symposia, band concerts, community service events, and team sports. A brief at sea phase will allow ships from both navies to practice the Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea (CUES) and ship handling.

These naval activities underscore the deepening and diverse relationship between the U.S. and Vietnam.

FITTING IN

Some of us seem to navigate fitting in to the world of social or professional life with more ease and grace than others. As we get older and gain life experience things usually come in to focus a little more easily. There are so many variables and choices we can make when establishing the reality of what we want our family life and circle of friends to be. Life is just unpredictable that way, in or out of the military.

Most military kids get an inevitable jump on practicing the skill of fitting in from the very start as they move every few years. First of all, they have little say in the matter. Secondly, for some, their advantage is that frequent social change is all they have ever known.

Whether in their neighborhood or at school most learn early that friends and playmates cycle into and out of our lives in short bursts.

I think that often my kids were a bit more successful at making the transitions than I was over the years.

They would pour out of the back of the station wagon sizing up the playground and bikes they could see on the lawns in front of the houses. Before dinnertime on the first day they would have met a few kids and had a plan for the next day.

The younger the kids were, the easier it seemed to go for them.

Of course, when they are younger there are fewer social choices. At

preschool the 3-year-olds have little understanding of the social structure of society or self-consciousness about what brand sneakers they have on (except if they light up, because every 3-year-old wants shoes that light up when they walk). Nonetheless, they live the experience and the cycle begins.

I would not say that military brats are necessarily any better at fitting in, but I think they may just be more alert to the many transitions ahead of them. They also may become savvy to reading people and picking who they like more quickly. Clearly some may be more successful than others, and the military is pretty good about providing information and programs directed to ease our families’ transitions whenever possible. It understandably gets more challenging for teenagers but mine were never short on friends.

For spouses, we may start this journey with little or no experience to the ways of the military. No matter what our stage of life, education level or choice of profession, the lifestyle and culture of the military will probably present some things along the way that you have not contended with before that may cause you to worry that you might not fit in. Again, the military support networks have a great lineup of programs and classes to ease our way. I would recommend all spouses take advantage of these courses when you can. Confessions of a TV junkie

In the basement of a dingy community center, a florescent light buzzes over a dozen or so people seated in a circle of metal folding chairs. Some nibble anxiously at store-bought sandwich cookies, while others sit in nervous silence. There is a screeching of chair legs against linoleum, as one bleary-eyed woman stands with a trembling Styrofoam coffee cup to speak.

Hello, [clears throat] my name is Lisa ... and I, ... I am a Binge Watcher.

It’s been one week since my last television fix, and I’m here to share my story.

Believe it or not, there was a time when I didn’t even know what Binge Watching was.

In fact, while our Navy family was stationed in Germany, we felt lucky that Armed Forces Network (AFN) aired day-old episodes of Survivor and American Idol. The rest of the time, we entertained ourselves with middleof-the-night live football broadcasts, quirky BBC cooking shows, and strange AFN public service announcements.

But when we moved back to the States, my husband and I discovered the joys of Digital Video Recording. Despite this, our television use was purely recreational. We were mere “social watchers,” catching a recorded program here and there, and streaming a movie over the weekend. Little did we know, we were perched on the slippery slope of instant gratification.

Eventually, we needed more episodes to be entertained. Our digitally savvy kids introduced my husband and I to the allure of services such as “On Demand” and “Hulu.”

How intoxicating it was to take a double hit of “The Bachelor” and chase it with “Deadliest Catch” all in one evening!

Soon, we were hooked, and there was no going back.

Before we knew it, we were spending perfectly sunny weekends holed up in the family room of our base house watching episode after episode of random television series. We

calendars and Navy FamilyLine also has great info and programs to share (gocompass.org).

While learning and understanding the culture of the military through these programs is most certainly helpful, we always hope for the best when we arrive someplace new. There is no perfect formula but don’t hesitate to speak up when you have the opportunity. If your Sailor is in touch with a sponsor when you have orders to a new command (by the way, EVERY Sailor is supposed to have a sponsor) start there with getting information about Facebook pages or other area spouse groups to ask questions. A simple post to say you are a nurse looking for part time employment, or asking where to find a dance studio for your little ballerina will often get you a few responses from people you likely have something in common with.

Church, school, and work, hobbies and committees – these are the tried and true places to meet people because you have chosen the place or activity yourself. But don’t discount that random conversation in the dentist office!

As far as fitting in with other military spouses goes, it should really be no different. Find people you like and be friends. Some get very wrapped up in comparing the rank of their Sailor to your Sailor.

While it might be wrong to say it does not matter, in the world of socializing spouses nobody outranks another. Age, rank and experience are three separate and independent things, and one thing has nothing to do with the other. When you go

told everyone that we were “just catching up on ‘Modern Family’” or that we were “simply wondering what all the hubbub was about ‘Downton Abbey.’”

Ironically, it was the show “Breaking Bad” that nudged us into the deep dark abyss. We’d been jonesing to see the AMC series for a while, and when we found out that the first 54 episodes were On Demand for a limited time leading up to the final season, we knew we had just scored.

During our epic three-week “Breaking Bad” bender, we finally hit rock bottom. Our family room looked like the scene of a rave party, strewn with soda cans, popcorn and Chinese take-out boxes. Our pupils were permanently dilated as we stared, transfixed, into the psychedelic LCD screen, our cold, clammy fingers gripping the smudged remotes.

We were so strung out after that binge, we quit cold turkey for a while, satisfying our cravings with short doses of “House Hunters” and “Seinfeld” reruns in hopes that we’d avoid the painful withdrawal symptoms of rapid detox.

However, lately, ads keep popping up for April premiers of “Game of Thrones,” “The Real Housewives of New York,” and “Wolf Hall.” The final season of “Mad Men” premiered on April 5, and we still haven’t finished watching “House of Cards” and “Downton Abbey” ... What’s a TV junkie to do? Binge watch, of course!

I must confess that Spring Premiere Season has triggered my recent relapse. Although I’m not sure there’s a 12 step recovery program for Binge Watching, I’m absolutely certain I’ll gain 12 pounds if I don’t get up off the couch and stop watching so much TV. So, mark my words: I’m quitting Binge Watching for good this time. I’m 100% serious.

No more lounging in sweatpants on Sunday afternoons pressing “play” hour after hour. Spring has sprung, and I’ll be spending all my time in the great outdoors. I swear, I’m going to do it, and there’s no time like the present.

And I’ll start just as soon as the “Mad Men” final season is over.

We all just want to have a comfortable array of friends who we can enjoy spending time with. We always fit in best when we are just being ourselves. I used to be far more social than I am now but I am older and hopefully a little wiser, but I don’t worry any more if I fit in or not. My kids learned from us to practice fitting in by inviting new acquaintances over for dinner and to socialize. We learned from some very wonderful friends over the years to trust your instincts and pick the ones you would want in your family and then add them to your family. And forgive yourself if you find a bad apple in the bushel once in a while. People change, we may not like it, but it happens, move on.

I always enjoy when my kids visit and bring along another Sailor or two for dinner or to spend the weekend. Sometimes they are a little nervous at first but I think after a regular family dinner and some desert and conversation they realize we see them as our son’s friend, not the Sailor that my husband might need to mentor (although he’s always happy to do that too!) and they fit in just fine. French toast or pancakes for breakfast helps too!

Scholarships offered to children, spouses of troops Defense Media Activity WASHINGTON

ThanksUSA, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to thanking America’s troops through the gift of education, is inviting children and spouses of America’s armed forces to apply for its post-secondary education scholarships, according to a ThanksUSA news release issued April 1.

Those interested can apply via the organization’s website, and the application period extends from April 1 through May 15, the release said.

“Ten years after ThanksUSA was launched, we remain committed to helping military families flourish and advance their dreams through education,” ThanksUSA CEO and Chairman Bob Okun said in the release. “It’s how we can offer our collective gratitude as a nation for all that our servicemen and women and their families do for us.”

ThanksUSA provides need-based scholarships to the children and spouses of service members across all the armed forces, including the reserves, giving special consideration to families of the fallen and wounded, according to the release. Over the past decade, the release said the organization has raised more than $10 million, resulting in nearly 3,400 scholarships. Up to 500 students are expected to receive awards this season, totaling $1.5 million.

“We believe 2015 applications will exceed 2,000 again this year, a strong indication of military families’ persistent need for assistance,” Okun said in the release. “Our objective is to raise awareness of the support our military families need on the education front while they sacrifice daily on the front lines through deployments, family separations, and transfers across the country and overseas. Through ThanksUSA, those who lack the resources can pursue their goals.”

ThanksUSA is a nonpartisan, charitable effort to mobilize Americans of all ages to thank the men and women of the U.S. military for their service to the nation, the release said. The organization provides college, technical and vocational school scholarships to the children and spouses of military personnel.

Scientists take a deep dive for undersea warriors

Office of Naval Research (ONR) officials announced, April 3, new research support to develop a prototype diving helmet that could revolutionize diving missions – and provide greater safety for divers.

The announcement from ONR’s TechSolutions program supports ongoing work to improve a diver’s “rebreather” helmet system – a crucial piece of equipment that conserves breathing gas and combats the toxic gasses that impact divers breathing beneath the waves.

“Our undersea warriors deal with challenges that most of us will never have to face here on the surface,” said ONR Executive Director, Dr. Walter Jones. “We’re working hard to get them the most cutting-edge technologies to accomplish their wide array of missions, and get them back to their ships safely.”

The rebreather and helmet research is taking place at Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division. The program developed a prototype life-support diving system that was announced last month.

The new research phase

will lead to advanced testing to produce enhanced diveready prototypes, officials say.

The benefits to divers could be enormous. All divers encounter dangerous levels of toxic nitrogen and carbon dioxide gasses when breathing underwater, requiring a rebreather system to mitigate the toxicity. Navy divers use a breathing system called the Fly-Away Mixed Gas System, in which helium replaces the nitrogen that can lead to crippling, even fatal decompression sickness, known informally as “the bends.”

While effective, it requires and expends large amounts of oxygen and helium in complicated mixtures.

However, helium availability has diminished in recent years, as demand has grown and production has slowed, and it has become more expensive and difficult to find.

The new “hybrid” rebreather helmet from ONR TechSolutions allows divers to alternate between different breathing systems, and reduces the amount of helium needed.

This will allow Navy divers more diving opportunities than short supplies of helium currently permit.

Finally, by optimizing the gas mixtures, the new rebreather will also extend the time divers can remain underwater safely in the event that primary breathing gas is interrupted.

safe diving time. “The work of the Navy diving community includes missions from underwater rescues to covert operations, and from explosive ordnance disposal to hull

maintenance.

Undersea medicine – which includes the development of science and technology (S&T) aimed at optimizing submariner and diver performance – is designated an official national naval responsibility.

The rebreather work aligns with the recently released Naval S&T Strategy, which emphasizes national naval responsibilities as a key component of warfighter performance.

ONR’s TechSolutions program takes technology requests directly from Sailors and Marines. When the organization receives a request for a technology solution to a problem – anything from Sailors on watch needing improvements in steel toe boots, to Marines in theater requesting better mortar sights – the program attempts to find and deliver a rapid prototype solution, usually within 12-18 months from the request being received.

ONR provides the science and technology necessary to maintain the Navy and Marine Corps’ technological advantage. Hundreds of current and former crew members, 10 previous commanding officers, and their family members crowded onto the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5) to bid farewell to the “Iron Nickel” during the ship’s decommissioning ceremony at Naval Base San Diego, March 31.

Tears wet the eyes of many of the former Sailors and Marines in attendance as the flag was hauled down, the watch was secured and the crew of one of the most famous ships in the Navy’s Pacific Fleet ceremoniously disembarked the vessel for the final time.

Peleliu was named after the Battle of Peleliu which took place from Sept. 15 to Nov. 27, 1944, in which 1,256 Marines gave their lives to take the island which was being held by the Imperial Japanese Army.

Rear Adm. Marcus A. Hitchcock, the current director of Fleet and Joint Training at U.S. Fleet Forces Command, was the ship’s 18th commanding officer from March 2008 to September 2009 and served as the guest speaker for the ceremony.

Hitchcock talked not only about his time as commanding officer,

but also about how he read many books and studied up on the ship’s namesake when he received orders to become the ship’s commanding officer. In addition, he spoke about how he was fortunate enough to host a ship’s tour in the summer of 2009 for Marine veterans from the actual Battle of Peleliu.

“These Marines had seen and done extraordinary things on a remote island called Peleliu. Like millions of their generation, they were committed to keeping America free,” said Hitchcock. “They came to represent grit and determination.

It was fighting men like these for which this warship is named.”

Hitchcock also thanked all the plankowners and former crew members in attendance for their service to the ship over the past 34 years.

“From that first deployment onward, USS Peleliu and her crew demonstrated time and again that she always achieved the mission, to perfection, with style and in ways that had never been seen before,” said Hitchcock. “Except on rare occasions, USS Peleliu never did it alone. She always had a teammate by her side, the U.S. Marine Corps.”

To close his remarks, Hitchcock led the audience in three cheers to mark the grit and determination of all the Sailors and Marines who served on

board Peleliu during her years of service.

Capt. Paul C. Spedero, Peleliu’s last commanding officer, read the decommissioning orders and gave the order to disembark the ship.

“From deputy chief of naval operations to commanding officer, USS Peleliu, subject, decommissioning of USS Peleliu,” read Spedero.

“On March 31, 2015, decommission USS Peleliu and transfer to the inactive reserve. Executive officer, disembark the crew.”

During 34 years of service, Peleliu was homeported in both Long Beach and San Diego on the California coast as thousands of Sailors and Marines called the ship home.

Capable of launching a coordinated air and sea attack from one platform, Peleliu conducted 17 deployments, 178,051 flight operations, served 57,983 personnel and steamed approximately 1,011,946 nautical miles since being commissioned May 3, 1980 in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

After the decommissioning process is complete, Peleliu will be towed from San Diego to Hawaii to join the Navy’s reserve fleet. There, the last of its class amphibious assault ship will take its place alongside its sister ship and first in class, the ex-USS Tarawa (LHA 1).

The Surface Warfare Officers School Command (SWOS) Surface Navigator Course graduation on March 20, included its firstever enlisted Sailor.

Quartermaster 1st Class (SW) Peter Hill from the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64) was the first enlisted surface navigator graduate, and in another milestone, he is also the first to be awarded the new assistant navigator Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC 0202).

SWOS expanded the Surface Navigator Course from four weeks to five as of February 2015 in order to better prepare officers for the challenging role of ship’s navigator. SWOS also added eligibility for the course to senior quartermasters assigned to the role of ship’s assistant navigator as part of a continuum of quartermaster training.

The Surface Navigator Course represents the ‘master’s level’ training for the Navy’s enlisted navigation specialists. In the near future, revisions to the apprenticelevel Quartermaster “A” School and a journeyman-level course prior to a quartermaster’s second sea tour will also be introduced.

For enlisted graduates of the Surface Navigator Course, the assistant navigator NEC was approved by Navy Manpower Analysis Center (NAVMAC) and formalizes classification of the special skills, training, and qualifications required for an enlisted quartermaster to serve as assistant navigator on Navy ships.

According to Lt. Andrew Groh, lead surface navigation instructor for SWOS, prospective navigators and senior quartermasters participating in the same course provides continuity and consistency to navigation training, which in turn will increase confidence and competence of navigation watch teams. The combined class format also provides opportunities for

extensive interaction between officers and quartermasters before they meet at the chart table aboard their ships.

“Being a prior navigator and watching this class evolve over the last few months makes me realize that the fleet is more prepared than ever to address the contemporary challenges of navigation and seamanship,” said Groh. “With our ever-evolving reliance on technology for maintaining navigational situational awareness, it is crucial for commanding officers and navigators to have that forceful back-up that derives from implementing the assistant navigator NEC.” As the first graduate of the Surface Navigator Course, Hill was thrilled.

“It feels amazing. I realize that I represent my community and graduating this course is such an honor,” said Hill. “Now I feel even more confident to take what I learned and lead quartermasters in the fleet.”

Capt. David Welch, SWOS commanding officer, emphasized the importance of the restructured training. “Navigation is a core competency and critical to the safe operation of our ships,” said Welch. “Petty officer Hill’s graduation is an important milestone in providing standardized navigation training from seaman recruit to captain. As news of this course spreads across the fleet, I hope and expect to see a steady increase in senior quartermaster participation in this course. We seek to instill the highest professional standards in our officers and enlisted mariners.”

Hill advises that potential enlisted surface navigators not take the Assistant Navigator Course lightly.

“Prepare, study, and know the basics of navigation. This class is so fast paced, and once you get behind, it is difficult to catch up,” said Hill. “Put in the extra time if you need it, prepare prior to coming to this class, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

Month of the Military Child recognizes young family members

To highlight the year-round contributions, courage and patriotism of the military community’s youngest members, the DOD observes April as the Month of the Military Child, a Pentagon official told DOD News.

Established by then-Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger in 1986, the month recognizes some 1.9 million U.S. military children ranging in age from infants to 18 years old who have one or both parents serving in the armed forces, said Barbara Thompson, the director of DOD’s Office of Family Readiness Policy.

“We want to highlight their sacrifices [and] support of the military member in their families, so it behooves us to take time from the busy calendar of our events and recognize military children,” Thompson said.

Permanent change of station moves, deployments and training activities, among other facets of military life, can present unique challenges to children who must constantly adjust to distance, unfamiliarity and uncertain schedules, Thompson explained.

“That can be a real sacrifice, because each parent is a very important part of that child’s makeup,” Thompson said. “So we want to make sure that when they move or change schools, all of those transition times are supported with resources, programs and services.”

The annual Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Proclamation signing on board Naval Station (NAVSTA) Newport took place, April 2, following the monthly tenant command meeting at the Officer’s Club.

“Newport may not have a heavy case load of sexual assaults but we are ideally situated to reach out directly to our students and send them back to the fleet with different tools to use to put an end to this crime,” said Capt. Dennis Boyer, commanding officer of Naval Station Newport.

The proclamation signing is one of many events taking place at the Navy’s Center of Excellence for Officer and Senior Enlisted Education and Training throughout the month.

Julie Sellerberg, NAVSTA Newport executive officer, to kick off a teal ribbon tying event in front of the NAVSTA Newport command building.

Agnello and her assistant, Audrey Scott, sexual assault victim advocate coordinator, went on to work with commands tying nearly 50 teal ribbons and erecting 10 silent witnesses, life size teal silhouettes of both men and women with the stories of a victim affixed to them, posted at the Chapel of Hope; Naval Health Clinic New England, Newport; Surface Warfare Officers School; Officer Training Command Newport; Fleet and Family Support Center; and Naval Academy Preparatory School.

Education is key to stopping this crime and victims need to know that there is support out there for them.

Throughout the month, awareness tables will be set up at various high traffic areas to include the John H. Chafee Fitness Center and inside the award winning Ney Hall Galley, where, on April 28, the chefs plan on putting teal desserts on the menu to further emphasize the campaign.

Aside from the ribbons and awareness tables, there will be other visible reminders set up including the Clothesline Project.

The Clothesline Project began as a vehicle for people affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a t-shirt.

The t-shirt is then hung on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against men and women.

The t-shirts that will be on display were designed by men and women, survivors, friends, family, advocates and people passionate about the cause.

A dodge ball tournament will be held at the Chafee Fitness Center towards the middle of the month.

DESRON 26 aims to maximize proficiency with Joint Warrior Training

Heading across the Atlantic Ocean to participate in their third straight Exercise Joint Warrior in Scotland, Commodore Brian Fort, commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26, and his staff know what it takes to execute a multinational exercise in a NATO environment.

Since his first tour as a division officer aboard USS Bainbridge (CGN 25) deploying with Standing Naval Forces Atlantic, Fort has worked alongside European forces many times over the course of his career. He deployed with Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 in command of USS Gonzalez (DDG 66), served as an instructor with the Royal navy for two years at the Britannia Royal Naval College and is now heading to Faslane to participate in his third straight Joint Warrior with DESRON 26.

Many of his DESRON staff members have similar military experience. In addition to the recent Joint Warrior experience of more than half of the current DESRON staff, Lt. Cmdr. Scott Van Nest, DESRON 26 operations officer, has served at the NATO Headquarters in Northwood, U.K., as well as on a United Nations mission for six months in Liberia. Senior Chief Sonar Technician (Surface) Chris McGrath, the squadron’s senior sonar technician, is embarking on his fifth Joint Warrior.

Fort said the team he’s bringing to Scotland is as good as they come.

“My DESRON staff is amazing,” Fort said.

“They have had a lot of experience working with NATO. We understand how they do business; we understand how the Royal navy does business.

“When we designed our first preparation, the first training plan last spring for the ships we brought over, we built that off of personal experience, and we felt we were close to target. We improved upon that last fall, and this time we’re focused on exactly what we found to be successful last time around.”

Twice a year, nations converge on Faslane to commence Joint Warrior, a United Kingdom-led training exercise designed to pro-

vide NATO and allied forces with a unique multi-warfare environment in which to prepare for global operations.

With more than 50 ships representing 15 countries participating, the latest exercise, scheduled to begin in early April and run for two weeks, will be the largest Joint Warrior to date.

The Navy contingent will once again be led

by DESRON 26, leading the guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio (CG 68) and the guidedmissile destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) to Scotland. The guided-missile cruiser USS Vicksburg (CG 69), the guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75), the dry cargo ship USNS Medgar Evers (T-AKE 13) and elements from Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing (CPRW) 11 and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 48 will also participate in the exercise.

In addition to U.S. and U.K. forces, Joint Warrior will include air, sea and ground assets from Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Turkey.

On both Porter and Anzio, the ships’ manning was augmented with additional personnel to gain experience participating in the exercise. When Anzio left Norfolk for Joint Warrior, she left with nearly every rack full, embarked with nearly 70 extra crew members from 14 commands, including the DESRON 26 staff. Porter, too, had additional augments when she departed her homeport of Norfolk for Scotland – headed ultimately for her new homeport in Rota, Spain.

Fort said the two weeks the ships spend transiting the Atlantic are when the exercise truly begins.

“When we were assigned for Joint Warrior 14-1 in the spring of 2014, we made sure it was clear that we were going to use the transit as a period of preparation and final training to ensure we would be exercise-ready on arrival in Faslane. As a squadron, we take a lot of pride – both personal and professional – in getting these ships ready for Joint Warrior.”

ed phase of training, also participated Task Force Exercise (TFEX) 15-2 in February, a multinational exercise between DESRON 26 and the Royal Canadian navy.

Van Nest said both ships will benefit greatly from the multinational training experience working with multiple ships in an international setting.

“The opportunity for these ships to work on the basics, to operate with other ships in close proximity to one another, to have to depend on one another for support – just those day-to-day basics – is phenomenally important to prepare for deployed operations,” Van Nest said.

During the transit, Anzio and Porter have conducted daily divisional tactics (DIVTACS) ship handling and maneuverability training, run a variety of weapons readiness drills including no-notice weapons firings, tested and improved their communications systems, conducted helicopter flight operations and practiced signal bridge and boat operations.

By the time the ships arrive in Scotland, Fort expects Anzio and Porter Sailors to be able to take what they’ve learned in their shipboard training and apply it during each phase and scenario within the exercise. He also expects them to succeed because of the lessons they’re learning now about building relationships with their shipmates, lessons they will be able to apply when working side by side with personnel from 14 other nations.

“Relationships matter,” Fort said. “They build the foundation for how you’re going to be able to function together as a team and

help you establish a battle rhythm.”

McGrath said getting into a battle rhythm with shipmates helps Sailors build proficiencies, and adjusting to the NATO battle rhythm will pose new and different challenges.

“We will drill on routines every day; we train to the capability we know these ships will be required to demonstrate,” McGrath said. “How they handle that on a daily basis, as part of a battle rhythm, will really determine how well they’re doing.”

Fort said the Sailors will also get an additional benefit from participating in Joint Warrior: a story they can tell for the rest of their lives.

“Any time you look at a photo from an international exercise, and you see 20, 30 ships in the photo, those Sailors are forever able to point to those images and say, ‘Look at that.

I was there,’” Fort said. “That’s a pretty cool thing to be able to do. These guys are going to be able to look back and say that not only did they participate in the biggest Joint Warrior on record – a really significant exercise – but also that they did so at a time when it’s particularly valuable and important for us to work together with NATO and our allies to practice our procedures, operate as a coalition and operate as one force.

“The opportunity for all of us to operate together in a challenging maritime environment shows the commitment our nations have to our navies and to each other. I think we’ll look back on this, at the scope of it, and say, ‘Wow, now that was an amazing exercise.’”

A Vietnamese-American, Le commanded guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen (DDG 82) when it visited Da Nang in November 2009. “It’s great to be back in Vietnam, and we’re very much looking forward to working with our Vietnamese Navy counterparts over the next ďŹ ve days,â€? said Le. “There are many highlights of this week’s engagement. One of the most signiďŹ cant activities will be the opportunity to conduct Code for Unalerted Encounters at Sea (CUES) exchanges underway, which will help both navies prevent miscommunication at sea

Occurring during the 20th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Vietnam, these activities were designed to foster mutual understanding, build conďŹ dence in the maritime domain and develop relationships between the people and navies of both nations.

This is the sixth NEA Vietnam since it was established as an annual engagement in 2010. NEA Vietnam was last conducted April 7-11, 2014.

Greenert praised the experience of the crew testing the new LCS saying it allows the Navy to be more efďŹ cient with crew management. “These Sailors on board the ship are more senior than the average Sailor,â€? he said. “They’ve been in the Navy for four to six years. This enables us to keep the crew to half of what it would normally be on a conventional ship.â€?

The CNO also addressed the pace of construction for these new ships. “In the future I expect to see continued construction of the LCS platform. We took a pause and decided we need 52 of these ships,� said Greenert. “The Secretary of Defense asked us to take a look at this and see if we could make

these more survivable and more lethal. We’ve done that and we are all guns ahead.�

Miller was thanked by the CNO for his work in Congress in aiding military personnel and veterans. The Representative likewise thanked the CNO for letting him visit the ship. “It’s been an outstanding tour of a great new capability that we have in the United States Navy,� said Miller. “I appreciate not only seeing this great vessel, but being able to talk to the men and women of the Independence.�

Bring the entire family to the 15th annual International Children’s Festival, a veritable palette of color, cultural pride, and camaraderie. The event, taking place April 18, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. in downtown Hampton’s Mill Point Park, will allow children of all ages the unique opportunity to experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of close to 40 countries.

A wealth of activities are planned for this year’s program, including a costumed Parade of Nations showcasing a breathtaking array of exquisite fabrics, bold colors, and exciting designs. Entertainment for this year’s festival will take place on three stages and includes the popular Dragon Head Dance, native folk dancers, and musicians. In addition, Hilby the Skinny German Juggle Boy and magician John Kingry will provide roaming entertainment throughout the day. Returning to the festival for the second year is the ever popular “Animals From Around the World,” featuring camel rides for $3 per person.

To help children further simulate real travel and enhance their worldwide journey, Passports to Adventure will be available for $1 each and when purchased the child will be entered into a special “World Traveler” prize drawing. Any time a child visits a country, they will have their visas stamped to confirm their interaction with the ambassadors of that country.

In addition to the activities of the day, vendors will offer (for a fee) exotic and tempting treats from Greece, Italy, Korea, Thailand, and more. The designated food court area will remain open until the conclusion of the festival.

The public is invited to join in commemorating the melding of the Native American, European and African cultures that have come together to shape our community at Hampton Heritage Day, a free celebration, Saturday, April 18, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., at Carousel Park, 602 Settlers Landing Road in downtown Hampton.

The event includes presentations and performances that take place on a stage throughout the day, as well as other activities in and around Carousel Park, such as hands-on family activities, cultural displays and demonstrations, food, traditional arts & crafts, and more to honor those who came before us.

Highlights include a Native American Thanksgiving address in the Tuscarora (Skarure’) language from Wayne M. Brown, principal chief of the Meherrin Nation, along with Iro-

quois dances, Iroquois creation story, beading, finger weaving and weaponry demonstrations from the Meherrin Nation (Kauwets’a:ka – People of the Water). Colonial activities include raw wool carding and weaving, embroidery, sewing, sail making, rigging, blacksmithing and cooking demonstrations from Lighting the Way Education, Inc. Musicians Stephen Christoff and Gabe Stone will perform music from the 17th century. The award-winning group Bill Jenkins and The Virginia Mountain Men will offer authentic Appalachian music. Songs and stories of the African Diaspora will be presented by The Legacy of Weyanoke of the Weyanoke Association for Red & Black History and Culture. African music will be performed by Baba Silki and the Akebuland and Remembrance Drumming Ensemble. The 99th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company D, will set up tents with weapons and equipment used by a union soldier during the Civil War at Camp Hamilton. The Hampton Performing Arts Programs present Musical Mosaic to take attendees on a musical journey from spirituals of the enslaved up to popular African American performers of today. Our goal with ‘Hampton Heritage Day’ is to broaden the story and provide a deeper context of the early formation of Hampton: to honor the people who were already here long before the settlers arrived, as well as the Africans who arrived soon after in 1619, and who, in a very real sense built the city and whose labor had a major economic impact,” said Hampton History Museum Executive Director Luci Cochran. “The confluence of these groups is a key moment in our history and the nation’s past.”

Spartyka Fight League (SFL), the premier mixed martial arts (MMA) fighting group in Virginia, is at it again. SFL’s goal, not only to bring every MMA fighting fan the opportunity to see the best that Virginia has to offer, but to also give back.

April 11, SFL will hold its 4th annual SFL XIX “TKO for the Ta-Ta’s” at the Ted Constant Center at Old Dominion Univer-

Yiorgo: Jimi, thank you and your entire family for your service to our country. You started SFL in 2010, what are your future goals and aspirations?

Jimi Spartyka: Thank you, it’s a great honor to serve in the best country in the world. In regards to SFL, we are well on our way of becoming the top promoter of amateur mixed martial arts events in Virginia. We started with a 5K charity event for Wounded Warrior Project that blossomed into annual multiple events. We then hosted MMA events at the Hampton Coliseum and have been on SPIKE TV for Fight of the Night, an MMA show that comes on Friday nights.

Y: Recently, you had a chance to partner with GLORY, the international kickboxing league.

JP: Yes, what a prestigious honor that was. Working together we produced a show that not only aired live across the U.S. on

SPIKE TV, but it was also broadcast live to more than 140 countries worldwide. Add to that Mike Tyson at ringside as an analyst, it was an amazing event for everyone involved.

Y: This brings us to your 4th annual SFL XIX “TKO for the Ta-Ta’s.” Why did you decide to get involved with Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tidewater chapter?

JP: We heavily support our military, but once a year I wanted to highlight a nonmilitary charity and we thought Susan G Komen would be a good one to work with because just as we are fighters, they are too.

They fund programs to fight breast cancer and educate everyone about the importance of early detection.

Y: What should the fans expect to see April 11, at the Ted Constant Center?

JP: Through organized, professionally hosted competition, we have the area’s elite amateur MMA athletes who get to practice their art before fans who know how to appreciate, what this sport has to offer. So come out and see the best of the best MMA amateur fighters in Virginia as they set out to prove why they deserve to have you cheer for them. One such fighter is Thomas Blair, the 135 pound champion who will be defending his Title this weekend at the Ted Constant Center. If you are a fan of MMA, then this is the place to be.

It’s all or nothing for Izabela Badurek

Poland’s second entrant in the UFC’s strawweight division, Izabela Badurek, is a lot like the first one, current 115 pound champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. In short, she’s not simply happy to be here; she’s here to stay a while.

Except on fight night. On fight night, the sooner she finishes her opponent the better.

“I don’t like to play around,” Badurek said through manager and translator Tim Leidecker. “I go after my opponents, press hard, force errors and finish. I’m not a safe fighter. When I see an opening, I will take it. When I have to take the risk of losing position in order to go for a submission, I will do that.”

Through seven pro fights, the Lublin native has yet to back down from her stance, finishing all five of her victories by first-round submission, and when the UFC announced that it was visiting Poland for the first time, she was a natural for this Saturday’s card in Krakow.

“I really got the feeling that my career was changing for the better when I started working with Tim and Seba from Control Master last summer,” Badurek said. “Even though a lot of those fights didn’t come to fruition, they had me scheduled in fights on some of the best events in Europe and even had offers to compete stateside literally within a few days. Of course it was a huge surprise when it actually happened, but with them as well as my new gym and training partners, this was something I truly believed could happen. For the first time in my career I really feel I have the support to reach my full potential.”

Matched with highly-touted Russian Alexandra Albu, Badurek faces a foe with an unbeaten record but plenty of mystery about her, with little footage available of her five pro wins. That could be a dilemma for some, but the Polish newcomer is confident of a positive result on Saturday.

“From what I’ve seen, she’s a very powerful young lady who, like me, is dropping down from bantamweight to compete in the strawweight division,”

Badurek said. “I expect her to be fit, fast and strong. She will be fighting me on my home turf, though, and the Polish fans will be screaming for me. I’m in great shape and I have a good rhythm right now. Since her last fight, I’ve competed four times, finishing my last three opponents in the first round. I plan on carrying that momentum into the Octagon in Krakow and extending that streak to four.”

Strong words, but they come from a place that isn’t reflected in just seven pro fights. More accurately, it comes not from seven fights, but from studying martial arts since she was seven years old.

“I started judo when I was seven,” Badurek said. “I’ve been competing since I was eight. I’ve been on the tatami, on the wrestling mat, in the ring and in the cage for the last fifteen years. This is my job, my hobby, but also my passion. I would not want to change this for anything else – the UFC Octagon is exactly where I want to be.”

It’s a decision that could raise a few family eyebrows here in the States from parents just starting to see through the actions of fighters like Ronda Rousey that making a career as a mixed martial artist could be a reality. What about in Poland?

“I think they saw it as a natural progress,” Badurek said. “I started out in judo and progressed into wrestling and submission fighting and eventually mixed martial arts. Of course, every mother is worried about her child, but they saw that I was enjoying what I did, it was making me happy and I was actually quite good at it as well, so they’ve always given me their support.”

And as Badurek points out, Poland has not just accepted female mixed martial arts, but supports it wholeheartedly.

“Fortunately, our scene is pretty openminded and progressive when it comes to women competing,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of female fights on every major Polish event for the last three years before it became ‘en vogue’ elsewhere in Europe.”

It’s a scene that produced Jedrzejczyk, a former Muay Thai ace who transitioned to MMA and went on to win her division’s biggest prize, a UFC world title, in

March when she defeated Carla Esparza.

It was a big deal not just for Poland as a whole, but for Badurek in particular.

“I was very happy for Joanna,” she said. “We were actually training together before her last fight and she is just a very sweet and kindhearted girl that has been working super hard for this. She has run the gauntlet of really some of the toughest and most dangerous opponents around, both at 115 pounds and also at 125 pounds, so she absolutely deserves this great success.”

And while the two have trained together, they are also in the same division, and in a sport where everyone wants to hold the belt and be called world champion, if Badurek makes a splash in the UFC on Saturday and continues to win, there will be talk of an all-Polish clash. So hypothetically, what would a fight like that mean for the country?

“First of all, I think that would mean that she will hold on to the belt and establish herself as a dominant champion and I would get off to a successful start into my UFC career as well,” Badurek said. “Although you can see how fast it can happen, I think it would be really premature of me to talk about challenging for that belt. I first need to prove that I have what it takes to compete with the best there are inside the Octagon and beat them. Should it come to such a fight between two Polish girls fighting for the belt, I’m sure that would be huge for the fans and the country.”

It’s an honest and classy response, and when you add in her aggressive fighting style, you get the idea that UFC fans will treat Badurek just like they do Jedrzejczyk – as one of their new favorites. Then again, those in Krakow Arena this weekend are already on board and ready to start cheering. Is Badurek ready?

“I don’t think this is something you can really prepare for,” she said. “When I walk out to thousands and thousands of Polish fans screaming, my music playing and the Biało-Czerwona (Polish flag) flying, I’m sure I’ll have goosebumps all over my body. I hope I can make these fans happy by giving them something to cheer about.”

Joey Logano becomes 26th driver to win in all three NASCAR touring series.

In winning the recent Kroger 250 Camping World Truck Series race at Martinsville Speedway, Joey Logano became the 26th driver to win a race in all three of NASCAR’s top touring series.

Logano actually did it in a span of six races this season – winning the season-opening Daytona 500 for his Cup win, an Xfinity Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, and the Truck Series race at Martinsville, Virginia.

At Martinsville, Logano, driving a truck owned by fellow Team Penske driver Brad Keselowski, started from the pole – a career first for him in the Truck Series – and led 150 of the race’s 250 laps.

It looked for a time in the closing laps that young Cole Custer would get the win, as he bumped his way past Logano and Matt Crafton to get the lead, but Crafton spun Custer, setting up a green-white-checkeredflag run to the finish.

Logano, who lined up third, used a bold move at the drop of the green flag to bolt past Crafton and Erik Jones to take the lead going into Turn One, and drive away for the victory.

Still, it took a bold move on the final restart for him to jump from third to first, past Matt Crafton and Erik Jones, to get the win.

“I was able to get a good restart with the green-whitecheckered, and barrel off into One and hold it on the bottom and be able to retake the lead and ultimately win,” Logano said. “It’s cool to say I’ve won in all three series now. It’s kind of special.”
