Step one: Contact the Voluntary Education Program
Before you get buried in college brochures, speak with an education professional through the Voluntary Education Program. An education professional can help guide you through the planning and paying for your education, as well as eligibility requirements. Find the right contact information below depending on your service:

Perhaps you’ve decided to pick up some valuable knowledge. Maybe you’re leaving the service and need to re-create yourself. No matter why you’re pursuing higher education, you need a game plan — a course of action to get you from today to that moment you walk across the stage holding your diploma in hand. Here are some practical steps to take.

Step two: Choose a college

Deciding which college to attend is much easier when you have the right information. As a service member, you have access to useful resources such as the College Navigator, a free online tool from the National Center for Education Statistics. The College Navigator provides information on more than 7,000 postsecondary education institutions, so you can compare schools’ tuition, financial aid, accreditation information, graduation and retention rates and more. TA DECIDE is another helpful tool for comparing schools and programs. Designed for participants of the Department of Defense Military Tuition Assistance Program, it provides education costs and outcomes, as well as information about other military students who are participating in the tuition assistance program.
Step three: Take your college admission exams
Get ready for some studying even before college begins. Most colleges and universities require admission exams with your application, such as the SAT Reasoning Test, the SAT Subject Tests, the American College Testing (ACT) Readiness Assessment, Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and the General Education Development Test. The Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support, or DANTES, can help you prepare for enrollment and cover the cost of some academic tests. DANTES also offers college prep resources that can help you prepare for these admission exams, sharpen study skills, and identify your interests and aptitudes in choosing an area of study or career path. Step four: Convert your military experience to college credit
The tests you endured in combat can count just as much as quizzes in a classroom. The Joint Services Transcript converts your military experience into civilian college credit, providing documented evidence to colleges and universities of professional military education, training and occupation experiences. The Joint Services Transcript is a collaborative transcript program that replaces previous transcript programs, making it easier for colleges to read and recommend credits.
Step five: Understand your financing options
As a service member, you have several options that can help fund your schooling — so that you can concentrate on studying, not paying the bills. The education consultants at Military OneSource can help you identify grants and other kinds of assistance for which you are eligible. Here is a sampling of programs and loans available:

Building Job Skills and Funding Your Portable Career

How can you make your military spouse career “more portable”? By making sure you have the skills, training, licenses, degrees and certifications that employers want in high-growth, high-demand fields and occupations. Your military support community, including the SECO program, can help with advice, education, and even financial assistance for eligible spouses — with MyCAA scholarships up to $4,000. Here’s how. What are “portable” careers?
A portable career is one that employers value, with skills that are in demand and move easily with you. These skills: • Can be used across various positions or certain occupations like management, technology, organizational and communication. • Include talents and interests that you can use anywhere, such as photography, culinary arts or interior design. • Can involve independent contracting positions, such as consultants, freelancers or self-employment careers. Examples: online tutor, application developer, virtual assistant, fitness instructor, technical support, researcher and website design/development.
How can I discover what skills are needed in different fields?
These places offer a great start: • Review the Industry Competency Models at CareerOneStop to learn more about the skills and competencies critical for success in various industry sectors. • Learn about the different occupation groups, available positions, educational requirements, salary ranges and growth sectors in the Occupational Outlook Handbook. • Investigate self-employment or independent contracting by visiting the U.S. Small Business Association website.
Is there funding for building my portable career?
The My Career Advancement Account Scholarship is a workforce development program that provides up to $4,000 of assistance to eligible military spouses who are pursuing a license, certification or associate degree in a portable career field and occupation.
• Spouses may use their MyCAA funds at any academic institution approved for participation in the MyCAA Scholarship. • You can learn more about whether you’re eligible and other details at MyCAA Scholarship Program or by downloading this fact sheet. • See the chart and the end of this article for some of the fields where you can use your grant.
Where can I find open positions in portable careers?
The Military Spouse Employment Partnership website lists open positions available from 300 employers that focus on portable career opportunities for spouses. • A number of these partners offer virtual jobs in customer service, legal, accounting, counseling and a range of other positions. • Others have facilities across the country making it easier to continue your career path with the same organization as you transfer to new locations. • The advanced search lets you review jobs by installation, company, industry, location, job type and more.
What sort of careers can I use my scholarship account for?
These career fields and occupations are examples of those approved for MyCAA. If you don’t see the field or career you’re interested in, please contact a Career Coach, developing portable skills and using resources at your family readiness and education center on your installation. Spouse Education and Career Opportunities coaches are also ready to assist you in all areas of career exploration, education and training, career readiness and career connections. Aerospace If you have a passion for flying or working with aircraft, then an occupation in the aerospace career field could be for you. Animal Services This growing and rewarding career will give you the training necessary to work in areas such as animal hospitals, grooming and training centers and animal control. Automotive Services & Transportation The transportation industry requires drivers and operators, dispatchers, attendants, mechanics and engineers to keep things moving safely and affordably. Business, Finance and Administration Business and management consulting firms influence how businesses, governments, and institutions make decisions. These firms offer their clients expertise, information, contacts and tools.
Construction Contractors use high-tech tools and machinery to build highly sophisticated facilities such as hospitals, laboratories, skyscrapers and dams. Careers include architects, carpenters, painters, electricians, HVAC repair and civil engineers. Education The educational services industry includes academic education, vocational or career and technical instruction, and other education and training. Teaching positions, which constitute almost half of all educational services jobs, require at least a bachelor’s degree, and some require a master’s or doctoral degree. Health & Human Services The health care industry administers care around the clock responding to the needs of millions of people. Most workers’ jobs require less than four years of college education, with diagnosing and treating practitioners among the most educated.
Homeland Security People’s lives often depend on the quick and competent care of emergency medical technicians (EMTs), paramedics, police officers and firefighters. Emergency dispatchers schedule and dispatch workers, equipment or service vehicles to carry materials or passengers Hospitality Hospitality is a thriving industry, caring for business travelers and vacationers, offering both accommodations and dining. Hotels, resorts and casinos are destinations in themselves requiring talented staff and management. Information Technology All organizations today rely on computer and information technology. The computer systems design and related services industry helps them meet their specialized needs and is expected to experience rapid growth.

Legal While lawyers assume ultimate responsibility for legal work, they often delegate many of their tasks to paralegals. Paralegals — also called legal assistants — continue to assume a growing range of tasks in legal offices. Skilled Trades Trades such as these are particularly important to areas that are growing in population, require certification or other credentials, and provide the portability necessary for frequent relocations: • Aesthetician or Cosmetologist • Designer • Journalist, Writer/Editor, Photographer • Translator/Interpreter • Mortuary Science • Sales Manager • Take control of your career by planning ahead

Postsecondary Education Complaint System From Military OneSource
The types of complaints Department of Defense will review include the following:
Education can open so many opportunities for our service members and their families, and more colleges and universities are offering programs that accommodate the mobile military lifestyle. Unfortunately, some institutions have used unnecessarily aggressive recruiting practices and may have misled our service members and families about the quality of their education or post-graduation employment opportunities.
• Recruiting and marketing practices
Fortunately, our veterans, service members or family members who are pursuing degrees through eligible federal education benefit programs can now provide feedback about any educational institution with which they may have experienced problems through the online Postsecondary Education Complaint System. This system is an important new tool that offers an objective process for submitting complaints that was not available before to the military community.
• Accreditation
Who should submit a complaint?
If you or your family member receives tuition assistance or is a Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts Scholarship recipient, you are encouraged to submit feedback here. If you are not using TA or My Career Advancement Account Scholarship education benefits, please submit your complaint to the appropriate agency: • Montgomery or Post 9/11 GI Bill® — Department of Veterans Affairs • Federal financial aid, for example Pell Grants and federal loans — Department of Education (email complaint) • Private student loans — Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
When to submit a complaint
You may submit a complaint if your school is failing to follow the Principles of Excellence. This initiative is designed to empower you and your family members to report misleading or unfair actions by education institutions. Examples of education related issues may include, but are not limited to, misrepresentation or deceptive actions concerning multiple unsolicited phone calls or emails used as a high-pressure recruitment tactic, false representation about degree programs, misleading statements regarding accreditation or promoting costly private or institutional loans.
How to submit a complaint
If you are using TA or MyCAA education benefits, please click the Submit a Complaint button below to file your complaint. Submit a complaint
After submitting a complaint
The process and subsequent actions after a complaint is submitted include the following steps. 1. Student submits a complaint. Upon submission of a complaint about an issue with a school, you will receive status updates via the email address you provided when you submitted the complaint. 2. Department of Defense and the military service review school complaints. Complaints will be sent to your Department of Defense military service education representative for review. The education representative will work with your school and provides you with a response to your complaint. If they determine another government agency would be better able to assist, we will forward your complaint to them and provide you an update. Please note that all verified complaints will be submitted for the record to the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel Network. 3. Department of Defense, military service and the school respond to the complaint. As your complaint is being reviewed, the Department of Defense/military service education representative will communicate with you as needed and, with feedback from the school, will prepare a response to your complaint. 4. Student receives a complaint response. Upon completion of the school’s response, you will receive a case closure notification via the email address you provided when you submitted the complaint. 5. Department of Defense will follow up on the complaint. Complaint data is shared with state and federal law enforcement agencies as necessary. Complaints tell us about practices that may pose risks to students. If we need more information, we’ll contact you.

TCC’s Early Childhood Education program earns national accreditation From Tidewater Community College

Tidewater Community College’s Early Childhood Education program has achieved first-time national accreditation from the world’s largest organization working on behalf of young children. TCC is one of only two associate programs in the state accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Northern Virginia Community College is the other. TCC’s Early Childhood Education program prepares students in the care, supervision and education of young children from birth to age 8. The college offers a 62-credit Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education and certificates in Early Childhood Instruction, Child Development, Preschool and Educational Support. Graduates are prepared for work in settings that include preschools, child care centers, Head Start programs, private schools, public schools and before- and after-school programs. Students who graduate from the associate program are equipped to transfer to four-year programs. TCC holds transfer agreements with Norfolk State University and Bellevue University. “National accreditation benefits us in many ways,” said Jeanne Hopkins, department chair and assistant professor of Early Childhood Education on the Portsmouth Campus. “We are intentional in creating a comprehensive program for our students that makes them attractive candidates for employment upon graduation.”

Warriors gathered at Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) headquarters in Jacksonville for an informational event presented by Microsoft Software & Systems Academy (MSSA). Warriors learned about career opportunities in the growing technology industry and how their military experience can help them transition into select career pathways. “Professional development events at Wounded Warrior Project are unique and insightful,” said Navy veteran Darrien Thomas. “Not only is the information interesting and useful, but these are established networking opportunities that I would not have obtained otherwise.” MSSA and its educational partner Embry-Rid-
dle Aeronautical University offer training in cloud application development; cyber-security; database and business intelligence administration; and server and cloud administration. Training is offered through classroom and project-based learning modalities. It prepares trainees for long-term, high-paying careers in the technology industry. “Many transitioning service members and veterans held jobs in the military specific to the military,” said Shawn Lewis, MSSA military affairs. “They bring skills such as great work ethic, sense of pride in their work, leadership, adaptability, and more. These skills coupled with the technical training offered by MSSA makes for a well-rounded and engaged employee.”

Events like this are just one extension of WWP’s comprehensive career counseling program, which helps wounded veterans transition from military life into the civilian workforce with a suite of professional counseling, career building, and job placement assistance. “Wounded Warrior Project has provided me with resume drafting skills, conducted mock interviews, and even reached out to partner companies during my job search. Wounded Warrior Project is a major reason I have the job I do now,” Darrien said. The MSSA development training program guarantees its graduates an interview for a full-time job at Microsoft or one of its hiring partners with a starting salary of $70,000 per year. “I found this particular program with Microsoft very interesting, especially given the short program length and high-paying starting salary,” Darrien said.

Fallen Patriots’ mission to provide scholarships to Gold Star students

From Cheyenne Gagnon As students return to school and their normal routines, please help Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation (Fallen Patriots) identify Gold Star scholars who need college scholarships. Thanks to the generosity of corporations such as YBC, Yesterday Business Computers, and Southpoint Capital Advisors, Fallen Patriots now has more scholarships opportunities and needs the media’s help to identify families in need. Nearly 20,000 dependents have been left behind by troops killed in the line of duty over the past 35 years. Unfortunately, this number continues to grow. Because of this, Fallen Patriots has recently joined in partnership with Tragedy Assistance Program For Survivors (TAPS) to better serve families of fallen armed forces. Under the agreement, Fallen Patriots and TAPS will offer students and families in their respective databases the oppor-
tunity to be connected to additional resources by providing consent to have their information shared with the other organization. “We believe one of the best ways to honor our fallen heroes is to invest in the future of those they loved most – their children,” notes David Kim, co-founder and CEO of Fallen Patriots. “A college education is the key to a bright future for any child and the generosity of our supporters is making those hopes and dreams come true,” he adds. Fallen Patriots helps bridge a $32,000 funding gap between government assistance programs and the cost of a four-year degree. As 63% of surviving spouses report having trouble making ends meet earning less than $50,000 per year, the vision of Fallen Patriots is to extend peace of mind to Gold Star families in all 50 states, in all branches of the military.
