HERITAGE FLIGHT HONORS LAST D-DAY CELEBRATION Senior Airman Tristan Biese JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, VA.

The U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight team conducted a flyover in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the last celebration at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia, June 6, 2019.

The four-ship formation included U.S. Air Force Maj. Paul “Loco” Lopez, F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team pilot, Maj. Garret “Toro” Schmitz, F-16 Viper Demonstration Team pilot, Capt. Andrew “Dojo” Olson, F-35 Lighting II Demonstration Team pilot, and Mr. Andrew

McKenna, Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation P-51 Mustang pilot.

“The Heritage Flight team gives people the chance to see a visual representation of Air Force air power,” said Lopez. “It shows the past, present and future in the aircraft that we fly. Flying in formation with the P-51 over Bedford is an honor to those who came before us and it’s truly humbling.”

During the flyover the team performed the missing man formation.

This formation is an aerial salute performed by aircraft at funerals or memorial events, typically in memory of a fallen pilot, a well-known

military service member or veteran, or a well-known political figure.

“To be able to represent the Air Force and all the men and women of the Air Force is an incredible honor,” said Olson. “Thank you to all those that gave their lives on D-Day 75 years ago and the surviving members who are still out there. We hope to make you proud.”

By showcasing the Airmen and combat advances made by the United States Air Force, the Heritage Flight team aims to educate and inform the American public on what the Air Force of tomorrow has to offer.

Stone assumes command of 363d ISR Wing

The 363d Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing conducted an assumption of command ceremony here, May 30.

Maj. Gen. Mary F. O’Brien, Twenty-Fifth Air Force commander, presided over the ceremony where Col. Melissa A. Stone assumed command of the wing.

During her comments to the audience, O’Brien stated over the past two years, the Airmen of the 363d ISR Wing have been absolutely outstanding and that she had every reason to expect they would maintain that momentum.

“That’s why I’m very excited to introduce the next commander of the 363d ISR Wing to you, Col. Melissa Stone. She’s exactly the right leader to continue the 363d's tradition of solving our toughest ISR problems,” O’Brien said.

Stone received her commission through the United States Air Force Academy in May 1998, and most recently was the vice commander of the 42nd Air Base Wing at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.

A career intelligence officer, Stone has held operational assignments in signals intelligence, information operations, analysis and Distributed Common Ground System training, and has deployed in support of sev-

eral operations. Additionally, she has served congressional affairs roles for Air Force Space Command and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and completed a Legislative Fellowship on Capitol Hill. Stone also served as assistant director of operations for the White House Situation Room within the National Security Council, and commanded the 35th Intelligence Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.

“My grandfather, then Col. John Dyas, commanded this very wing in the mid-1950s, when it was the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing.

I’m wearing his eagles today and am proud to continue this Air Force story,” Stone said. “Lions, I’m honored to be your leader and teammate, and can’t wait to continue your strong legacy.”

Stone is now the third commander to lead the 363d ISR Wing.

ACC rededicates Hyde building

AIR COMBAT COMMAND/A6 JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, VA.

Members of the Air Combat Command Directorate of Cyberspace and Information Dominance, rededicated the Major General John P. Hyde building with his widow, Elizabeth Hyde, during a ceremony May 23, 2019 at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia.

Although Mrs. Hyde was present during the building dedication to her husband in 2003, Maj. Gen. Hyde’s name was not yet affixed, therefore this was the first time she saw his name on the building.

In 1957, Maj. Gen. Hyde commissioned into the U.S.

Air Force and held many positions throughout the next 31 years of service to the nation including Tactical Communications Area commander at Langley Air Force Base.

Maj. Gen. Hyde was known as a communications pioneer, leading Airmen and establishing policies which helped create the foundation for today’s ACC command and control systems.

Now 16 years later, Col. Chad Raduege, ACC A6 director, decided to rededicate the building back to the Hyde family.

With close family ties to the Hyde family, Raduege recalled several memories of

playing in the A6 office he now holds. Raduege’s father, retired Lt. Gen. Harry Raduege, was Maj. Gen. Hyde’s executive officer. Along with Col. Raduege, his father and the senior enlisted advisor to Gen. Hyde, retired Chief Master Sgt. Anthony Coppa, shared memories

about their time serving alongside the major general.

The Major General John P. Hyde building rededication came just before Memorial Day, in time for service members and their families to remember of all those who served before them and the sacrifices made.

Students receive pearls of wisdom planting oysters

Students from Booker Elementary School arrived at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia to plant oysters June 3, 2019.

In a continuing initiative to help clean the Chesapeake Bay, the school partnered with JBLE to build an oyster reef on base in June 2017, and have been adding new oysters every year.

“We are planting them for oyster restoration,” said Karen Brace, Booker Elementary School science teacher. “The point is to hopefully increase the oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay and restore it to where it once was.”

One adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day. In their former glory, the oysters in the bay could filter the entire bay, about 19 trillion gallons of water, in one week. Now, it would take the remaining oys-

ters more than a year.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation guided the school through much of the reef-building process and provides baby oysters, also known as spats, for them.

The students involved learn the role of the oysters in the ecosystem as well as the impact and importance of water quality.

“JBLE provides us a place to grow the oysters and bring the students to gain this experience,” Brace said. “It’s also very close to our school so the kids can connect [the experience] to where we live.”

Through this endeavor, the student monitor the oysters’ growth. Brace picks the cage up every month and brings it back to the school where the students measure the oysters and document the progression on charts.

“Our partnership with Booker Elementary School supports students in developing scientific reasoning and empower-

ing them to use their skills and abilities to improve the environment around them,” said Dawn Christian, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron water program manager.

“We see the environment impacted all the time by human activity. Understanding their interactions with the environment will shape the way students think about their environment, ultimately, making it better.”

Stories should only end with quotes if they’re super impactful. Something that packs a bunch or something you’ve never heard before that leaves you with a lasting information. This quote is good, but it’s just informational so not strong enough to close the story out.

FEMALE AVIATORS HELP BRING IN NEW AGE OF FLIGHT EQUIPMENT

Female flight equipment is on its way through a major overhaul. The biggest change coming to the equipment, it is being designed with measurements from female aviators.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., held a Female Fitment Event June 4, where U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy female aviators gathered to have their measurements taken which will be used to design new prototypes for female flight equipment.

“We wanted to bring together a large enough group of women to get our different sizing both in our uniforms, helmets and masks,” said Lt. Col. Shelly Mendieta, Headquarters United States Air Force plans and requirements officer. “When you go to a squadron to go to a fitment event, there’s usually only a couple of women, so to get a full spectrum of what is going to work for women aviators, we needed to bring them all together in one place.”

In the past, flight equipment has been designed to the measurements of males because there are statistically more male aviators. This means more male measurements were used as opposed to their female counterparts.

Department of Defense leadership hope to change that.

“The Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force is committed to seeing us make progress and better integrate humans into the machine environment mix,” said Brig.

“What has happened over the years is that a lot of our data and information we use to design these systems have traditionally been based on men.”

Female aviators using flight equipment designed to the specifications of males presents a problem for their combat effectiveness. When it comes to the mission, the tools that Airmen use play a big role in mission success.

Vaughan explained that if flight equipment, from harness straps to flight suits, does not meet the needs of the human, as well as of the various machines used for our missions, then service

members are not going to be as effective and ready for combat.

The information gathered from the event is going to be crucial in the development of not only female flight equipment, but female aviators as a whole across multiple branches.

“The goal is to ensure that the equipment that we are developing is going to fit properly, so that we have a safe and ready force,” said Mendieta. “By measuring a spectrum of women at different stages in their career, we can ensure that we have better equipment.”

Many officers participating in this event are hoping to be able to disseminate information to other bases regarding

female flight equipment.

“When I look across the enterprise, this is an historic event and it’s important that we get this word out,” said Vaughan. “It’s not just the data that we are collecting and the fact that we are going to improve the equipment we use in combat, it’s also important to make people aware that this is one of the challenges that we are facing right now. It’s an Airmen challenge.”

For many female aviators, this marks a monumental push to ensure they are in fact combat ready and their opinions are being heard.

“Women have been flying in the Air Force for a very long time,” said Mendieta.

“We have made progress but

this is the first time in my twenty-year career that we have had the kind of momentum that we have to get this right. We have the opportunity to get this right and we have to grab that and take it for all it’s worth.”

The innovations and changes sought after for female flight equipment mark a new age for female aviators.

“Our Air Force aviators should not have to be members of the Air Force Boy’s Club to be properly equipped for combat,” said Vaughan.

With this new flight equipment being developed, female aviators can look forward to being provided with the equipment they need to carry out and complete their missions.

More than 30 volunteers came together to support the Clean the Bay Day event at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., June 1.

The event was a community outreach initiative designed to aid in the preservation of the base’s environment by removing harmful materials from JBLE’s bodies of water and shorelines.

“The immediate impact of cleanup is making a safer habitat for animals and ensuring that the debris collected will not reach the Chesapeake Bay,” said Joanna Bateman, 733d Civil Engineer Division Environmental Element pollution prevention and planning branch chief. “Shoreline litter can be harmful to wildlife and a source of water pollution.”

“Often times, items like plastic bags are mistaken for food by marine animals and can be deadly if ingested or can cause entanglement of wildlife,” added Bateman.

“Litter can clog wetlands and reduce their effectiveness as buffers for natural runoff and as shelter for wildlife.”

The team of volunteers were able to successfully collect more than 231 pounds of waste and recyclables from JBLE local waterways to include the James River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay and Eustis Lake.

“Recyclable materials were separated from trash and turned into the JBLE Solid Waste Recycling Center for recycling,” Bateman said.

Some volunteers canoed through Eustis Lake to collect trash that couldn’t be reached from the shoreline.

“There were twelve volunteers gathering trash via canoes in Eustis Lake,” Bateman added. “The primary volunteers for cleanup around Eustis Lake included members of the Fort Eustis Boy Scout Troop 45. This troop has supported cleanup efforts for numerous years.”

The volunteer effort covered an estimated four miles of shoreline and lake boundary helping to preserve the environment for future generations. “[Fort Eustis] and surrounding cities and towns have a profound impact on the health of the Chesapeake Bay,” Bateman concluded. “Clean the Bay Day is an annual opportunity to come together as a community with one common goal aimed at achieving clean water in the tributaries, streams and rivers running into the Chesapeake Bay.” For more information regarding upcoming volunteer opportunities with the 733d CED Environmental Element, contact (757) 878-4123.

The team of volunteers were able to successfully collect more than 231 pounds of waste and recyclables from JBLE local waterways to include the James River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay and Eustis Lake.

“Recyclable materials were separated from trash and turned into the JBLE Solid Waste Recycling Center for recycling,” Bateman said.

Some volunteers canoed through Eustis Lake to collect trash that couldn’t be reached from the shoreline.

“There were twelve volunteers gathering trash via canoes in Eustis Lake,” Bateman added. “The primary volunteers for cleanup around Eustis Lake included members of the Fort Eustis Boy Scout Troop 45. This troop has supported cleanup efforts for numerous years.”

The volunteer effort covered an estimated four miles of shoreline and lake boundary helping to preserve the environment for future generations. “[Fort Eustis] and surrounding cities and towns have a profound impact on the health of the Chesapeake Bay,” Bateman concluded. “Clean the Bay Day is an annual opportunity to come together as a community with one common goal aimed at achieving clean water in the tributaries, streams and rivers running into the Chesapeake Bay.” For more information regarding upcoming volunteer opportunities with the 733d CED Environmental Element, contact (757) 878-4123.

Army testing synthetic training environment platforms

Soon Soldiers worldwide could have a wealth of training options at their home station or armory — on a virtual platform.

The Army recently conducted user assessments of its “One World Terrain” technology, a key component of the Synthetic Training Environment that will allow Soldiers to train virtually in 3-D on battlefields around the world from home station or deployed locations.

Soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division out of Fort Riley, Kansas, helped assess the 3-D terrain database, which will be used on the Army’s training simulation platforms.

They also tested a new training management tool and training simulation software that will tie the different simulation platforms together to portray an evolving scenario for all users involved in mission rehearsals.

Soldier feedback will help shape the development of the synthetic training environment, said members of the STE Cross-Functional Team.

“From our perspective, we’re very encouraged on where we are and what we’ve been able to accomplish in the 18 months since the CFT has been formed,” said Maj. Gen. Maria Gervais, director of the Synthetic Training Environment CFT, now headquartered near the University of Central Florida campus

The synthetic training environment will blend a combination of live, virtual and constructive training together seamlessly, Gervais said.

The Army expects to award contracts next month to further develop STE platforms, she said.

Army Futures Command will use the Other Transaction Authority, or OTA, to expedite acquisition and fielding of the technologies, she said.

The idea is for One World Terrain to be used by all the different training simulation platforms, including reconfigurable collective trainers currently in development, she explained. Over the past year, her team has been assessing prototypes for aircraft, armored vehicles and infantry weapons systems trainers.

In April, Soldiers at Fort Carson, Colorado, tested a platform for aviation training called the Reconfigurable Virtual

Collective Trainer-Air, or RVCT-A. M2 Bradley and Stryker crews have been testing another prototype -- the Reconfigurable Virtual Collective TrainerGround, or RVCT-G, at Fort Riley, Kansas. In addition to replicating the range of the Army’s ground vehicles, the RVCT-G also supports dismounted Soldier training.

Putting the platforms together in a synthetic training environment will give Soldiers a realistic, composite training environment where exercises can be performed at any installation or training range, she said. The CFT hopes to rapidly expand the Army’s virtual training simulations capabilities from company to battalion levels and even up to Army component commands.

Soldiers have been giving CFT members feedback on how the systems meet their needs and

what aspects of the training needs improvement.

“We want to make sure

that we’re providing a capability that Soldiers will see as value added in the execution of their mission,” Gervais said. “To me, the most exciting part is they are now taking ownership of this. Once those Soldiers on the ground and the units and the leaders on the ground know it’s value added to their mission, they are going to use this.”

The One World Terrain prototype is a database that will bring a 3-D representation of global training scenarios for each of the service’s simulation trainers. It will be accessible across the U.S. military’s training platforms. Gervais said the Army expects to meet initial operating capability requirements by the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2021 and full operational capability sometime in fiscal 2023.

By the time the service achieves FOC for One World Terrain, it plans to also support training in the synthetic training environment across each of its six warfighting functions: mission command, movement and maneuvering, intelligence, fires, sustainment and protection. Gervais said that four to five installations will use the STE capability in fiscal 2021 and then it will expand.

Three Army divisions and 24 Marine Corps battalions already have begun using the One World Terrain capability. The Army’s National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California, has used OWT as well as one third of U.S. Special Forces units. The 7th Special Forces Group from Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, used One World Terrain while flying drones at the NTC.

THUNDERBIRDS ANNOUNCE 2020 OFFICER SELECTIONS Nellis Air Force Base PRESS RELEASE

The commander of Air Combat Command, Gen. Mike Holmes, has officially selected the officers who will be joining the United States Air Force Thunderbirds for the 2020 demonstration season.

Maj. Trevor Aldridge, 493rd Fighter Squadron, Royal Air Force Lakenheath, United Kingdom, has been selected as Thunderbird No. 2, the team’s Left Wing Pilot. He will fly as close as 3 feet from the No. 1 jet during flight formations, demonstrating the teamwork and precision of America’s Air Force.

Aldridge will replace Maj. Will Graeff.

Capt. Zane Taylor, 8th Fighter Squadron, Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., has been selected as Thunderbird No. 4, the team’s Slot Pilot. He will fly just aft of the No. 1 jet and between the two wingmen. Taylor will replace Maj. Whit Collins.

Capt. Kyle Oliver, 27th Fighter Squadron, Joint Base LangleyEustis, VA, has been selected as Thunderbird No. 6, the team’s Opposing Solo Pilot. The solo pilots perform maneuvers that showcase the maximum capabilities of the F-16 aircraft. Capt.

Michelle Curran, the current Opposing Solo Pilot, will transition to the Lead Solo position in 2020.

Maj. Kevin DiFalco, 31st Operational Support Squadron, Aviano

Air Base, Italy, has been selected as Thunderbird No. 7, the team’s operations officer. His duties will include air space coordination, ground communication with the pilots in the air and safety observation. DiFalco will replace Maj. Eric Gorney.

Katherine Moorkamp, Headquarters Air Combat Command, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, VA, has been selected as Thunderbird No. 10, the team’s executive officer. Her responsibilities will include leading an executive support staff responsible for Thunderbirds budget, training and force support actions for the commander. Moorkamp will replace Capt. Lauren Venturini.

Fighter Wing, Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea, has been selected as Thunderbird No. 12, the team’s public affairs officer. She will assume the team’s extensive media relations, community relations and public relations programs. Nelson will replace Maj. Ray Geoffroy.

“This year ’s applicant pool featured some of the very finest Air Force leaders who showcased a remarkable level of skill and motivation. This was an incredibly difficult choice, but I’m confident we chose the right team to carry on the Thunderbird mission and showcase America’s Air Force.”

The 12 officer positions on the team are two-year tours of duty.

By design, the position openings are staggered, allowing the squadron to maintain continuity of experience and leadership. In 2021, Thunderbird Nos. 1, 3, 6, 8 and 11 will be replaced.

JBLE kicks off Summer Safety Campaign

As the summer months begin and individuals start to enjoy the warm weather, the U.S. Air Force designated Memorial Day to Labor Day as the Air Force Summer Safety campaign.

With June also kicking off National Safety Month, it is important for individuals to understand the increased risks that come with the change in weather.

“While your personal safety is paramount, this is also a readiness issue,” said former Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson. “Over the past decade, preventable accidents on and off-duty have tragically claimed 16 Airmen lives on average per year during the summer months. Additionally, last summer our team suffered 797 accidents that took us away from work for at least one day and added up to a total cost in readiness of over 32 man-years.”

Heather Wilson, former Secretary of the Air Force more sunshine and with more sunshine comes hotter climates. During the very hot, humid days, it is important to stay hydrated and limit extraneous outdoor activities.

It is also important to identify symptoms of heatstroke and heat exhaustion that may occur during the summer. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention heavy sweating, tiredness, fainting, confusion, dizziness, nausea and muscle cramps are just a few signs.

While summer is a time for hot weather, it is also a time for travel, and with that comes safety precautions while operating a vehicle. According to the 633rd Air Base Wing Safety office, most vehicle accidents occur due to speeding, failure to wear a seat belt, attempting to drive or op-

erate a vehicle beyond responsible ability and being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“As you execute our Air Force mission or participate in summer activities with your family and friends, please use what you have learned about risk management,” said Wilson.

“Plan for the unexpected, make wise choices, and avoid unnecessary risks.”

Risk management is a way of measuring the possible risks of activities, evaluating the safest way of performing the activity and then making a planned decision before acting.

“Our vision and goal of all campaigns is to get the word out to personnel in an effective way,” said Mark White, 633rd ABW occupational safety manager. “Principles of safety are essentially the same today as they were many years ago. We plan to increase our use of technology and risk management to drive the safety message.”
