SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL USO USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia ¨ 3
Welcome to the 2017 USO HRCV Gala! The USO cares for service members and their families 24/7, 365 days a year. This Gala, our most important fundraising event of the year is a celebration of the freedom the men and women who wear the cloth of our nation provide for us. We have the freedom to dance, play casino games, and listen to great music all because 1% of Americans are willing to step up and protect our right to do so. Thank you for joining us in this great celebration of American patriotism. The USO was founded in 1941 as a means to give service members a safe space for rest, respite, entertainment, and comfort. Over 76 years later, the mission has expanded and evolved to include extensive support for military families, the wounded, ill and injured, and families of the fallen. Whether overseas or back at home, enhancing their quality of life is at the core of the USO mission. A strong American military is essential to not only American freedom, but to that of the entire world. Whether at home or abroad, the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia is the bridge to safety and comfort for many thousands of service members and their families all day, every day. When they deploy, we care for the families they leave behind. When they return we offer resiliency programs and healing support for them and for their families. If they make the ultimate sacrifice, we help their families navigate grief and a new, very uncertain future. No other military service provider has the reach and the impact of the USO. We care for every service member and his or her family, from every branch, throughout their entire career. Anyone can fly the American flag on the 4th of July or place a bumper sticker on their vehicle that proclaims “I Support Our Troops. The bumper sticker might be free, but our freedom most definitely is not. Thank you for answering the call by celebrating with us.

OUR CANINE COMFORT CREW
A wagging tail, an enthusiastic bark, a napping buddy, a furry whirlwind of affection. These are just a few examples of what our beloved canine comfort crew bring to our local service members in our USO centers. It would be an understatement to say that these incredible pups are beneficial to troops and families. When a service member has had a long hard day, navigating the stresses of military service, they know they can come into our centers and find that missing piece of their home lives. Perhaps they are far away from their own dogs, or maybe they have fond memories of a pet growing up, or perhaps they simply find comfort in the blissful face of man’s best friend. Either way, these remarkable dogs are just the ticket to release the pressures of military life. 18 « USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia
It has long been recognized that interacting with animals can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and contribute to an overall feeling of calm and well being. Our nation’s service members are responsible for the safety and security of our country, and with that comes an enormous amount of stress. They are often far from their homes or deployed for long periods of time-remote from family and friends. Bringing a slice of home to the men and women serving in our armed forces is what the USO does best; and our four-legged team helps further our vital mission. Come what may, the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia will always be there with a helping hand, a listening ear, and a carefree canine to make a service members day just a little bit easier.

USO YORKTOWN YORKTOWN GRAND OPENING The USO Center at U.S. Coast Guard Training Center at Yorktown had it’s Grand Opening on Thursday, July 27th. Unlike other USO Centers throughout the world, the new center at TRACEN Yorktown supports several different locations on the installation. The USO supports lounge-style spaces in several barracks with new furniture to support comfortable seating for gaming, television, movie watching. A more traditional USO space is adjacent to a large entertainment area in one of the barracks featuring pool, foosball and ping pong tables, big screen televisions and gaming stations, and lounge areas. The room is a quite space containing computer stations, a television without video gaming capabilities, and comfortable seating. The USO also provides a children’s area that is housed in the Cyber Café and features child-
sized furniture, developmental games and activities, books, and interactive toys. Additionally, the USO provides a comfortable, safe and convenient space for active duty Coast Guard mothers and civilian support staff to breastfeed and care for their new babies as they return to the workplace. At any given time, there are multiple women onboard TRACEN Yorktown who are balancing home life and work demands after returning to duty and/or being temporarily separated from their newborns due to training obligations. Each USO lactation space is equipped with new furniture, two additional hospital-grade Medela breast pumps, decorative items, family-centered publications and other reading materials. COAST GUARD DAY The USO supported Coast Guard Day at Yorktown by providing an information table with give -aways to help support the family fun event. It was an opportunity to also spread the word about the newly opened center to the families and active duty service members assigned to the base. GRADUATION SUPPORT The USO will provide graduation cakes on a regular basis. This will boost the moral on graduation day and it’s a wonderful way the USO can say congratulations to the Coast Guard students on their big day.

Delivering the key skills necessary to maintain and repair the world’s largest nuclear-powered aircraft carriers is just one of the strengths of General Dynamics NASSCO. Our local shipyards in Norfolk and Portsmouth, and our facility in Bremerton are fully equipped and capable of repairing any ship in the United States Navy’s inventory. They are manned by highly skilled tradesmen and marine repair professionals who take great pride in helping to keep the greatest navy in the world ready for any challenge, any mission, every day. General Dynamics NASSCO is proud to be a leading employer on the Hampton Roads waterfront.
