Dear Friends of the Archdiocese,

S

ummer brought celebrations of the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence. This is a time to give thanks, celebrate, recall the divine origins of human rights, and consecrate ourselves to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in union with what we, your Bishops, have done in Orlando during the spring meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

This is the season of PCS (permanent change of station), and this June brought the retirement of Auxiliary Bishop F. Richard Spencer. We give thanks for his tireless ministry as a chaplain and for almost sixteen years as Auxiliary Bishop, first as my Episcopal Vicar for Europe and Asia and, for the past seven years as my Vicar for the Eastern Region of the U.S.. Always ready to serve, Bishop Spencer has set the standard for pastoral zeal and energy. Even in retirement, he will continue to support the AMS through his prayers and occasionally in other ways. Join me in thanking him and praying for him.

This issue of Salute will narrate recent events in the life of this global Archdiocese, keep you abreast of the Auxiliary Bishops’ and my ministry, introduce co-sponsored seminarian Benjamin Kalis, and whet your appetite for the first ever archdiocesan Catholic Military Conference: “Living and Serving Justly” from 9 to 11 November 2026.

There is also a report on the most recent celebration of the International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes and the U.S. participation, amply supported by the Knights of Columbus. Those prayers for world peace seem more urgent than ever.

Over eighteen thousand pilgrims from around the world gathered at the shrine in prayer and celebration.

The pilgrim Church in the U.S. also looks forward to the beautification of the Georgia Martyrs and Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, a figure who marked Catholic family with his “Life is Worth Living” broadcasts. I remember many a Sunday afternoon in which my family watched his thoughtful and formative presentations.

Yes, there are many reasons to give thanks.

T

here is an old joke told in the Vatican about a surprise visit from Jesus Christ. Some counselors ask the Pope what they should do to welcome Him. His response: “look busy.” I have tried to follow that advice in these months.

In fact, these last few months have proven to be a remedy against boredom.

After the usual Colorado-Wyoming visits I continued the practice of visiting patients at the Walter Reed Military Medical Center and celebrating Mass for staff and patients on Ash Wednesday. Despite the construction projects and the constant flux of the hospital, the day was well-organized and the time well spent.

That Friday I preached a retreat for the personnel of the EWTN network at the splendid Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Huntsville, Alabama.

Everything was well-organized and I was pleased to see the shrine and offer some reflections to those gathered. I was back in Washington in the evening so as to preside at the largest Rite of Election held in the pastoral center chapel on the First Sunday of Lent. The AMS is also experiencing the same growth in new members seen elsewhere.

As you know, the AMS has struggled with the decision by the U.S. Army to end the contracts for Catholic religious education and pastoral coordinators.

Thanks be to God and some helpful people in the present Administration, that cancellation was reversed. As a part of icing the cake, I celebrated Mass at the Pentagon the week after Ash Wednesday and had some meetings there.

The Second Sunday of Lent found me at Daener Barracks in Germany where a very lively community celebrated Mass and continued with an abundant table at fellowship afterwards. That evening the priests serving in Germany, Italy, and Turkey joined for a meal and on Monday a day of recollection ably led by Father Joseph Carola, S.J..

On the way back to Mainz and Bishop Muhm’s residence, we stopped in Heidelberg and enjoyed the beauty of that town. I had not been there since the U.S. installation was closed. It is still a charming place—even if we ate in an Italian restaurant. continued on page 6

LOOK BUSY continued from page 5 Two days in Mainz allowed me to appreciate Bishop Muhm’s pleasant residence, visit a local monastery, and rest a bit. I then flew down to Italy for a quick visit to an old friend who is now the Bishop of Mondovì, an old town in Piemonte. It was a quick visit, because I had agreed to participate in the activities marking the 100th anniversary of the recognition of the Italian Government of their military ordinariate.

Those celebrations were well-attended by the European military bishops and two from Latin America. It was good to be able to greet Pope Leo very briefly. He sends his regards to all of you and was interested in the progress of the Cause for the canonization of Father Capodanno.

The Italians wanted me to be one of the major concelebrants at the anniversary Mass on Sunday (probably, because I speak Italian), but despite my known casual approach to airports, I did not think that Mass at 11:00 matched well with a 1:30 departure time. As it turns out, the plane only left at 2:45, but I did not know that until the same afternoon!

The annual visit to West Point for confirmations went well. Father Pawlikoski met me at the Newark Airport, because I was flying in from Columbus, Ohio where I attended the diaconate ordination of a man who had worked at the Naval Academy. continued on page 8

During his pastoral visit to Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico, Archbishop participated in the “Tapestry of Grace” Joint Services Prayer Luncheon and greeted the garrison command team.

The following week found me in Santo Domingo where I had been invited to give some talks on Lent. It was wonderful to stay in the nunciature and to see what the current Nuncio had been able to do with the residence. He has made some excellent changes, and I was pleased to stay there once again.

In fact, I presided at Mass on Saint Joseph’s Day in the nunciature chapel, exactly twenty-five years after I had been ordained an archbishop by Saint John Paul II to serve as Nuncio to the Dominican Republic. It was a great grace and the Sisters had decorated both the chapel and the new, informal dining room to mark the event. At the Chrism Mass in Washington, the archdiocesan family marked my Silver Jubilee and I am very grateful.

I was back in time to leave for the Coast Guard Academy and stayed on the grounds for the first time! A lovely family hosted the chaplain, Fellowship of Catholic University Students missionaries, and me for dinner. The lively bunch of youngsters made for a wonderful evening.

Can you believe that Holy Week arrived so quickly this year? Mine was simpler, because after the traditional Palm Sunday Mass at Joint Base Andrews, the Triduum was all at Annapolis. West Point had spring break. The Easter Vigil included eleven baptisms and over fifty confirmations!

Easter Week was complicated, because my old friend Bishop William Murphy of Rockville Centre passed away, and so I went up to the Mass on Easter Monday and returned early in the morning on Tuesday to witness Father Mark Rutherford brilliantly defend his doctoral thesis in Canon Law. The end of the week saw another record attendance that the spring discernment retreat at Saint Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, California (San Francisco). Pray that many of these young men are being called to the priesthood and chaplaincy!

I took the red eye from that retreat so as to confirm the youngsters and others from Shaw AFB and Fort Jackson in the Fort Jackson chapel. It was a good group, and the musicians came from Shaw, because the Army does not have any!

The next morning Father Whitehead and I drove to Charlotte to catch a flight to Chicago for the Army priests’ retreat. It was good both to see so many priests and to learn about the Saint Maximilian Kolbe Retreat House right next door to Mundelein Seminary.

You know about the interviews that I gave to “Face the Nation” (recorded on Holy Thursday morning, but broadcast on Easter Sunday) and to La Repubblica.

Both provoked more attention than expected, but I suppose that it was important to illustrate Church teaching on Just War. continued on page 10

LOOK BUSY continued from page 9 Spring continued to be interesting with confirmations in the Diocese of Arlington, a visit to the contemplative Dominicans in Virginia, a quick visit to Fort Buchanan in San Juan (including a prayer luncheon), time at the Air Force priests retreat, and the annual Commissioning Mass for the R.O.T.C. students in the Washington, D.C. area. Two baccalaureate Masses rounded out the spring: at Annapolis and at the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point.

Elsewhere in this issue you will read about the annual International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes. I did manage to participate in the ordination or “first” Mass of two of our co-sponsored priests, visited the Navy candidates at Newport, and finally made it to Cape May. That visit was delightful. The Commander accompanied me on a visit to the installation and then joined us for the baptism and confirmation of several recruits.

The Coast Guard training is rigorous for these enlisted men and women. They even had me observe the arrival of a new busload of recruits. I am glad only to have experienced that by observation!

Indeed, these months have been full, but I give thanks to Almighty God for His continued signs of benevolence and His source of strength. I hope that I have managed to “look busy”. Reflecting on the International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes

T

he 66th International Military Pilgrimage (PMI for the title in France) took place between 22 and 24 May and gathered more than 17,000 people from around the world.

Bands enlivened the city with music, military units marched through the streets of the town, and a variety of languages filled the air.

Once again, the Knights of Columbus ensured that the U.S. contingent was numerous. Wounded warriors, troubled souls, volunteers, chaplains, and a few permanent deacons made up the U.S. delegation.

VADM Andrew Lewis, USN (ret) was the ranking officer and Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly was also able to make his first visit to the Sanctuary at Lourdes.

I was happy to participate with them and to celebrate the various Masses that were central to these days of prayer and pilgrimage under the theme “Sentinels of Peace”.

It seemed to be one of the best visits that I have experienced. I learned of one pilgrim who learned during the Stations of the Cross to place his burdens on the shoulders of Jesus. Another had experienced the welcoming arms of the Lord amidst the confusion, distractions, and wanderings of military life.

Still another pilgrim offered the best summary of those days together: “What I and my brothers and sisters in Christ experienced far exceeded the expectations that we harbored. Simply put, it was a lifechanging, transformational journey that continues to shape our lives in countless aspects. To feel one’s spiritual cup overflowing in real time is a most humbling and orienting gift from the One who freely gives.”

The events are well-known to the participants. The Warriors to Lourdes begins with a Mass and the 14

sacrament of the anointing of the sick on Thursday afternoon. This year we moved to the Rosary Basilica which meant that there were many from other groups who joined us. Bishop Scott McCaig and the Canadian Delegation increased our numbers, and we were happy to have our brothers and sisters from the North with us.

That evening I spoke at the faith and fellowship gathering and tried to offer an orientation to the days and talked about being open to the maternal presence of Our Lady at the sanctuary. Afterwards the participants gathered in groups and confession was also available. The organization is flawless.

In one of those unique moments so typical of the sanctuary at Lourdes, following my presentation, I decided to make my first visit of this pilgrimage to the grotto. On my way back to the hotel, I ran into a Cleveland priest whom I have known since he was a college seminarian. He was in Lourdes with three seminarians about to begin the Camino. It was a joy to meet them and give them a blessing for their pilgrimage.

Reflecting ... Lourdes continued from page 15 The military ceremony and greeting of the war wounded used to be on Saturday afternoon in the town square. It has been moved to Friday morning to the large square that is in front of the Rosary Basilica. We are wiser now in that we move to our places shortly before the ceremony is to begin, rather than arriving at the hour prescribed. That is much like my approach to airports. Do not go too early. In Lourdes the wait this year would have been in the scorching sun!

The ceremony was orderly and brief. French military Ordinary, Bishop de Romanet, offered brief remarks and his was the only speech.

After lunch the U.S. Delegation returned to the Rosary Basilica for the official opening Mass. It is always good to celebrate there. The West Point cadets served both of the Masses and were precise. They wore a white uniform that initially had me perplexed as to which service was present. There is always something new to learn.

The traditional picture followed.

An Air Force priest made sure that I had a copy before I left, and I made sure that it is already framed and hanging in one of the most frequented stairwells of the Edwin Cardinal O’Brien Pastoral Center.

That evening there was a moment of priestly fraternity as the clergy from the U.S. and Canada enjoyed a meal together before the formal opening of the PMI. The opening was relatively brief, but I was exhausted by the time the last military band made its way out of the cavernous underground basilica—by that time almost empty.

Saturday was full. Despite it being the turn of the Irish to have the Mass at the Grotto, there was no Irish bishop present. Thus, Bishop McCaig presided and gave a wonderful homily in which he evoked authentic Marian piety and called us to profit from our time in a sacred place.

The Knights of Columbus and military representatives then marched with huge candles to area reserved for votive candles where we lit them and recalled those who had passed away during the year since the last PMI. Then Father Brian Reedy, SJ, LCDR, CHC, USN, led us in the Stations of the Cross as we made our way up a somewhat steep mountain path. The warm weather made the path a bit more taxing than usual.

Reflecting ... Lourdes continued from page 17 seminarian greeted me and began to speak in rather stilted English. I told him in Italian that he was welcome to use that medium. He wanted to trade jackets: his military seminary hooded jacket for my K of C Warriors to Lourdes windbreaker. I was tempted to suggest that he simply take my windbreaker, but thought the he might have been offended at the idea of not bartering as is the PMI custom. We were about the same size and so the exchange was made. At some future date if you see an Italian chaplain with a K of C windbreaker and a U.S. flag, you will know the origins.

The Rosary procession, the international Mass presided over by my Italian counterpart, Archbishop Gian Franco Saba, and the closing ceremonies all went well.

I decided to take part in the German military concert in the church of Saint Bernadette on Sunday evening. It was quite good, but each piece was introduced by the conductor in German and his words translated into French. The heat in the church and the long explanations tired me out. However, when the band played the theme song to “Band of Brothers”, I could not believe my ears. The conductor explained the story behind the movie. Truly, we were gathered in a prayer for peace!

What more can I tell you about those prayer-filled and busy days?

Certainly, healing occurred. Men and women reflected and borders melted somewhat. We reconfirmed our vocation as Sentinels of Peace. V

REALIGNMENT: TIME TO MOVE MY RUCKSACK

“O

ld SOULdiers never die; they just have a change of address.” This same statement can be said of Auxiliary Bishops of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA! It is my time to move my rucksack and retire upon the approval of the Holy Father, Pope Leo. Though this process is viewed as retirement, I prefer the word “realignment,” as I intend to continue ministry with the people of God. I have carried the same rucksack during my 34 years of military chaplaincy and sixteen years as Auxiliary Bishop. I remember wearing it in easy times and in times so painful that I could hardly carry the weight with the added burden of combat body armor, while still walking and breathing.

Nevertheless, God gave me the strength to soldier up in spite of circumstances.

After eight deployments into war zones with many toxins, especially the now infamous “burn pits,” in both Iraq and in Afghanistan, plus the first three days of 9/11 inside the burning Pentagon, where without protective gear I participated in recovery operations, my health has declined with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease and now also stage three prostate cancer. continued on page 22

REALIGNMENT: TIME TO MOVE MY RUCKSACK

From time to time, all kinds of things -- from sources both known and unknown -- have been put in my rucksack. Some have brought great joy, and others, deep sorrow, but God has, and continues to, arm me with the power from the Eucharist.

I alone choose how I will respond to each item in my rucksack regardless of what it is. “In all your ways be mindful of Him, and He will direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:6). To this very day, daily sacred Scripture and the Eucharist encourage me during this realignment of ministry as priest.

Regardless of what is in my rucksack, present and future, to include Parkinson’s disease and prostate cancer, I remain determined to respond in a way that honors God and respects and encourages others. That is my choice from the scriptural reminder that I can do all things through Christ, and nothing can separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus. So, as a warrior Bishop for the Lord, as I continue in ministry in the public sector with a heavier rucksack, I am not alone!

Departing the active full-time ministry within the AMS, and easing into a future alignment, I may walk and talk slowly due to Parkinson’s and cancer, but the light of Christ shines brightly inside of me, and God will give me the strength to “SOULdier up” in spite of circumstances.

Forever grateful to serve under the care and leadership of our archdiocesan shepherd, Archbishop Broglio, and to have lived with all of you, literally located around the globe, I am blessed beyond measure! REALIGNMENT: Here am I Lord, send me! V

EXPECTED and UNEXPECTED

BLESSINGS

T

he Lord blesses us in many expected ways. We rightly expect the sun to rise each morning and set each evening. We rightly expect Mass to be celebrated in our installation chapels each Sunday. We rightly expect the Lord to fulfill His gracious promise to be with His Church until the end of the age (Mt. 28:20). We rightly expect our young Catholics to return to their religious education classes each September, and we rightly expect the Lord to provide the catechists and assistants needed to teach those classes. Children, catechists, and assistants rightly expect their priests and bishops to visit their religious education classes.

I visit religious education classes whenever I am able. I enjoy answering questions and offering the children “bite sized” morsels of catechesis. Each visit reminds me that ongoing faith formation is essential for everyone— children, catechists, priests, and bishops! During these visits, I expect not only to teach but also to learn.

The Lord also blesses us in many unexpected ways. When I visited Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany, I was surprised to see four soldiers from the Iowa National Guard arrive early for Sunday Mass. They were an unexpected blessing at an air base in Germany! The soldiers had not expected to be there but found themselves in Spangdahlem awaiting transportation home after an earlier than expected redeployment from the Mideast. Everyone was blessed by their presence, and they were blessed to be invited enthusiastically to the meal and conversation after Mass.

We at AMS expect the Lord to provide the volunteer catechists and assistants needed for religious education classes. We expect Him to provide the priests and priest chaplains we need and for whom we pray, and we expect Him to continue to sustain the work of our global Archdiocese. Thank you for your prayers and support for all of us at AMS. V

Sacred Heart Consecration and Pastoral Visit in Orlando, Florida

O

n Thursday 11 June, I had the great blessing of concelebrating Mass with the bishops of the United States at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Universe in Orlando, Florida. Together, we consecrated our country to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was a beautiful Mass, and I am sure I will never forget this experience.

As regular readers of Salute know, I make pastoral visits to AMS priest-chaplains and veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (VAMCs).

I took the opportunity before the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops spring meeting to visit two Catholic priest-chaplains who work at the VAMC in Orlando, Fathers Richard Rojas and Paul Oye, OP, and the patients, and staff at the medical center.

The VAMC in Orlando is one of the newest and biggest VAMCs in the country. It is located in the Lake Nona area of Orlando, which is nicknamed “The City of the Future,” because it boasts modern buildings, man-made lakes, restaurants, and technology centers. Besides the VAMC, this area is also home to the University of Central Florida Hospital and a children’s hospital. Over 400,000 veterans live in Orlando, and the VAMC offers them state of the art healthcare.

Father Paul Oye is a Dominican priest who was born in Nigeria. He earned a Master of Divinity and a Master’s in Education Administration and was the pastor of the largest parish in Lagos, the former capital of Nigeria. Almost 25 years ago, Father Oye came to the United States and has served as a priest in the Dioceses of Harrisburg and Las Vegas, as a chaplain at Hershey Medical Center, and for the last four years, at the Orlando VAMC. Father Richard Rojas is originally from Brooklyn, New York and is celebrating the recent Knicks victory in the NBA championship. As a teenager, he became a professional skate boarder. Father Rojas’ family was originally from Puerto Rico.

He was engaged in various Protestant denominations as a young man, and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister. As an active-duty Army chaplain who served a tour during the Gulf War in Iraq, Father Rojas met a few Catholic priests and soldiers who knew and loved their Catholic faith and Jesus Christ, and were well

versed in apologetics. They were kind and answered Father Rojas’ questions about the Catholic faith. Father eventually felt called to be ordained as a priest in the Personal Ordinariate of Saint Peter. He was recently honored at the VAMC in Orlando for his combined 15 years of federal service as a military and VA chaplain.

A Message of Mission, Sending Forth, and Memory at the AMS Memorial Mass

n Sunday, 17 May 2026, Catholics filled the Great Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for the Ascension of Our Lord which coincided with the AMS’s 32nd annual Memorial Mass. As is tradition at the Memorial Mass, after the procession, but before the introductory rites, a U.S. Military Honor Guard presented the colors, and the choir led the faithful in singing the National Anthem.

In others belief is ridiculed, secularism dominates, or the Gospel is smothered by materialism.” However, an increase in conversions in the United States, France, and mission lands bears witness that the Church’s mission continues.

In his homily, Archbishop Broglio offered that the call to military service embraces the elements of the Ascension message: mission, sending forth, and memory. Military families, too, participate in this service as they accompany their service member, are sent forth to new duty stations, support the home front, honor sacrifices of the fallen, and accompany survivors of war.

Despite challenges to preaching the Gospel, Archbishop Broglio stated that “Christ has given the Church the essential mission to be His visible body. Each person is called to preach the Gospel, but the methodology changes according to each person’s specific vocation. As people are sent forth in military life, especially through a Permanent Change of Station (PCS), or new occupation, Archbishop Broglio noted that, “We might seem to be thin little pencils, but we are held in the hands of the omnipotent artist.”

Archbishop Broglio reminded the faithful that the mission of the Church is common to all believers, but it cannot always be freely undertaken. “In some parts of the

Christ’s Ascension may seem like a separation, but Archbishop Broglio offered that the Ascension brings a “deeper presence.” This is true because Christ has imparted to us His

Church and His very Body through the Eucharist and the perfect prayer of the Mass through which Christ draws nearer to us, and indeed, dwells within us.

As the faithful memorialized and prayed for the fallen and for those who carry the weight of war in their hearts, minds, and bodies, Archbishop stated, “We beg our Mother for an end to the senseless wars that pit children of the same Father against one another.”

Children of the Father are called toward our “ultimate PCS – we want to be welcomed in heaven.”

Two more traditions of the Memorial Mass involved the faithful presenting two helmets filled with written prayer intentions with the offertory gifts.

The Archbishop remembers these intentions at the altar. Finally, at the end of the Mass, a bugler sounds Taps. Chris Burne, Lt. Gen. USAF, retired, observed, “The Memorial Mass is always so deeply moving and meaningful in both a spiritual and a patriotic way. . . I think it brings many to tears.” May we always remember those who laid down their lives in military service. V

I converted from being a Protestant when I was 21 and discerned with a religious order in Vermont for a few years. It wasn’t until 2023, when I was in the U.S. Army and drifting in my faith, that God used a combination of Lent, confession, and a U.S. Marine named Walker, as a celestial 2-by-4 to knock me back to my senses which my parents had imparted to me. At that point, the call to the priesthood became unavoidable.

HOW DID THE LORD MOVE YOU TO BECOME CO-SPONSORED BY AMS? The Lord met me where I was, and I was actually accepted by the AMS before I was accepted by my home Archdiocese. The Lord opened countless doors to get me from active-duty enlisted to seminary. I owe a lot to Army Chaplain Father Peter Pomposello on this journey.

Prepare for Catechetical Sunday by Forming, Certifying, and Sending Forth Catechists

O

ne of the joys of serving as Director of Faith Formation is forming and training catechists on-site to apply for AMS catechist certification. This is a collaborative effort between the Catholic priest and the Coordinator of Religious Education at a military installation, with the archdiocesan Office of Faith Formation. To hold AMS catechist certification training at a military chapel, the senior Catholic priest makes the request to the AMS and helps discern the plan, and present it to the Archbishop for his consideration and approval.

In 2025, catechist participation in faith formation courses, in-person and online, increased. Two hundred seventy-two catechists received AMS training at sixteen locations throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Through AMS partners, members of the AMS completed ninety-one courses through Catholic International University, and one hundred thirty-nine courses through the University of Dayton’s Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation.

The Archdiocese issued one hundred and fifty-four AMS Basic Catechist Certificates. Catechists can apply to renew their certification every three years after completing a new faith formation course online through AMS partners.

A trained and certified catechist is a blessing for the Catholic faith community. Not only is this person equipped to teach religious education, but he or she is also equipped to help members of the community to discern their catechetical vocation.

The Catholic priest is the Director of Religious Education for all Catholic faith formation programming at every military installation. His involvement in the planning process, and his presence during the onsite catechist training, is vital for the success of the experience. Catechists feel affirmed and recognized by their priest through his participation and leadership. The priest’s involvement, especially in celebrating the Mass, providing Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, leading prayer, and participating in storytelling, enriches the experience of catechetical training. continued on page 34 Summer 2026 |

Faith formation and certification of catechists are essential priorities for the Archbishop. In choosing catechist courses, the catechist must ask him or herself: Which course will help me better proclaim and teach Jesus Christ to this group of disciples with which the Lord has entrusted me this year? How can I become a more effective catechist in the image of Jesus Christ?

disciples of Jesus Christ rather than just “volunteers.” Publicly recognize and celebrate their call to serve in the ministry of catechesis by prayerfully commissioning them during Mass on Catechetical Sunday. Invite the catechists prayerfully to discern an area that needs growth, and help them sign up for a faith formation course online or host a catechist training. Above all, guide catechists to understand the archdiocesan vision for catechesis and become familiar with resources such as the AMS Faith Formation Thematic Calendar, the AMS Family Witness to Christ platform, and the curriculum textbook and correlations.

Catechetical Sunday will be on 20 September 2026. This year’s theme during the Jubilee of Saint Francis is, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. . . to bring good news to the poor.” Resources to recognize, pray for, bless, and send catechists in their mission to proclaim and teach Jesus Christ may be ordered from Our Sunday Visitor. Fruit That Will Last:

A reflection on Three Years of Serving with Team Saint Paul

M

ost of the time in ministry, you plant seeds that you never see grow.

You simply love well in each moment and entrust the rest to Divine Providence. Over my three years serving with Team Saint Paul at Travis Air Force Base (AFB), the Lord has graciously allowed me to see the work of His grace.

When I arrived at Travis AFB in June 2023, the garden of the Catholic young adult community was nothing but soil. It had, thankfully, been tilled by a prayerful young adult in the community who had been empowered through a formation program called Reach More. She had started to introduce herself to young adults after Mass. When my teammate and I arrived as the very first members of Team Saint Paul, no one seemed to understand who we were, and they did not seem particularly interested in group events. That first year, we spent a lot of time in prayer and introducing ourselves to people, trusting that the Lord was moving.

We watched patiently as the seeds began to sprout.

At the start of my second year, the soil had turned into a true garden. When my new teammate arrived at the start of that year, we already had weekly Bible studies and fostered authentic relationships. The Lord was planting a solid community. The airmen knew who we were and looked to us to lead events and bring people together. Together, my teammate and I began implementing weekly Eucharistic Adoration and one-on-one OCIA lessons. Through prayer and consistency, we watered the garden.

During my third year with Team Saint Paul, my teammate and I watched as the community lived an even more abundant life. Everyone became part of a family and many began to offer their hands in the labor, taking part-ownership of the garden. Most notably in my third year, three different airmen whom I had met in my first year of mission, made the decision to allow God to transform their lives, and they were received into the Church. These fruits came from seeds that I never expected to see sprout.

Overall, the most surprising grace and growth came from my own life while on mission. As a part of Team Saint Paul, I was sent somewhere I had never been and learned to trust in the Lord alone. As I taught one-on-one OCIA, I witnessed the power of the Lord’s hands in the lives of others. I knew it was not me converting their hearts, but the Lord. As I conclude my time with Team Saint Paul, I look back with gratitude that He allowed me to work in His vineyard and plant fruits that will last. V

Auxiliary Bishop F. Richard Spencer

Retires After 16 Years

A

uxiliary Bishop F. Richard Spencer, a former U.S. Army chaplain who served five deployments to Iraq, two to Afghanistan, and was present at the Pentagon during the 9/11 terrorist attack—risking his own life to save others—has retired from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), after nearly 16 years of fruitful, episcopal service. Bishop Spencer submitted his resignation according to CIC c. 411, which directs bishops to tender their resignations at age 75. Bishop Spencer, facing health challenges, turned 75 years-old on 10 June, and Pope Leo accepted his resignation.

Bishop Spencer was ordained an auxiliary to Archbishop Timothy Broglio on Sept. 8, 2010. Archbishop Broglio commented: On behalf of all of the faithful and clergy of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, and in my own name, I express profound gratitude to Bishop F. Richard Spencer for his years of service to this archdiocese. First he was a dedicated and faithful chaplain in the U.S. Army and then continued that ministry as an Auxiliary Bishop extending my ministry throughout the Europe-Asia Vicariate and for the last seven years as my Episcopal Vicar for the Eastern Vicariate of the United States.

Born in Sylacauga, Alabama, Bishop Spencer was commissioned an Army Officer in 1973, leaving active duty in 1978 to pursue a vocation to the priesthood. Ordained for the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 1988, he returned to active duty in 1999, serving as a chaplain in Korea, Bosnia, Egypt, the Pentagon (during 9/11), Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Archbishop Broglio said Bishop Spencer “has been tireless in responding to the call, and almost omnipresent in the areas of his responsibility. No one could have asked for a more faithful, willing collaborator. While he continues to support the AMS by his prayers and an occasional ministerial activity, I hope that he will enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation.”

Bishop Spencer holds four academic degrees and many awards including Eagle Scout, the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal (3 Oak Leaf Cluster), the Army Commendation Medal (6 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Iraq Combat Medals, and the Korean Service Medal. He is a Knight Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. V Summer 2026 |

spiritual, and faith formation care that they deserve. AMS benefactors are participants in the pastoral ministry of the Military Archdiocese, and a recent event to honor veterans in southern Florida underscored this reality.

On Saturday, 10 January 2026, the Knights of Columbus Assembly #3862 in Ave Maria, Florida hosted their annual Veterans Ball to honor the service and sacrifice of those who have served our country in the armed forces. Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio was the honored guest and keynote speaker for the Veterans Ball which took place at the Del Webb Grand Hall in Ave Maria. Special guests included Mr. Tom Monaghan, founder of Ave Maria University and veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, and Mr. Mark Middendorf, President of Ave Maria University.

The Assembly’s annual Veterans Ball aims to inspire patriotism, honor veterans and the nation, and support veterans charities. Attendees included retired and active-duty military, representatives of the Office of Florida Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, faculty of Ave Maria University, and AMS Vocations Director Father Paul-Anthony Halladay. Knights of Columbus from across Florida, including Assembly #1818 in Venice,

Florida, and Florida State Chaplain Father Bob Kantor (Lt. Commander, USN) also attended. Proceeds of the event will support the AMS’s work to promote vocations to the military chaplaincy and fund the participation of veterans in the annual Warriors to Lourdes pilgrimage.

The evening began with a welcome from Captain Dominic Micillo, USN (Ret.), presentation of the colors by members of the Ave Maria University ROTC Color Guard, and singing of the National Anthem. Deacon Jeff Ball, who is a retired U.S. Navy Commander, led the guests in prayer.

At the playing of a medley of service anthems, those who had served in each branch of service stood to be recognized as their respective anthem played. All in attendance enjoyed a delicious meal of Cuban cuisine.

Following dinner, Archbishop Broglio delivered a keynote speech on the history of the military chaplaincy which had recently celebrated its 250th Anniversary. The Archbishop provided an eloquent tutorial on the essential role of the military chaplain in providing for the spiritual and pastoral needs of service members in times of peace and war. ONE YEAR with

I

have been the Coordinator for Team Saint Paul for a little over a year.

After serving as a missionary for five years with FOCUS at military academies, I was excited to continue serving those who serve in a new capacity. I jumped right into meetings with members of Team Saint Paul (TSP), recruitment travel, communications with chaplains and installations, and planning for annual training. It has been a joy and a gift to see what the Lord has done during this time.

I often reflect on our baptismal call to be missionaries for Jesus Christ.

Members of Team Saint Paul live out that calling in a specific way. Through this ministry, they accompany active-duty service members as they pursue a life of discipleship with Jesus, support Catholic chaplains in their young adult outreach, and teach the faith through their lives as well as through facilitating Bible Studies and OCIA. I have spent significant time this past year recruiting for Team Saint Paul.

Whether it was at career fairs, speaking at campus ministries, tabling at conferences, or attending young adult events, I have had plenty of opportunities to talk to people and share about this exciting ministry. I am often asked about the fruits of Team Saint Paul from prospective participants. With great joy, I share about the Soldiers, Airmen, and Marines who have joined OCIA and been welcomed into the Church, or the lonely soldier whose life changed through the community that TSP provided. I have the pleasure to talk about airmen who felt like they had friends to rely on when they welcomed their first child while stationed far from family, and the small-group Bible studies that brought people together.

During these encounters, many people share with me their own experiences in the military or stories of dear friends and siblings who are serving. The true

fruit of these recruitment trips lies in the hope that arises when people share how grateful they are for an Archdiocese that cares for the spiritual needs of those who serve.

Over this last year, Team Saint Paul has experienced significant changes. Some team members have moved on to pursue the next step in life: both seminary and married vocations. Some have moved home after years of serving, and others have continued serving on mission as their families have grown. Through it all, every member of Team Saint Paul has deepened their relationship with Christ.

I am convinced that God calls us to go on mission not only to participate in His work, but also to do work in our own hearts. In my time walking with, and coaching the members of TSP in their ministries, I have seen them transformed through their commitment to prayer, the sacraments, and service. continued on page 46 Summer 2026 |
