EUROSATORY 2022: INNOVATION AT THE CORE OF THE EXHIBITION The Eurosatory start-up challenge in partnership with Agorize

The Eurosatory exhibition returns from 13 to 17 June at the Parc des expositions of Paris-Nord Villepinte. To date, more than 1,500 exhibitors from 60 countries as well as 33 national pavilions are already registered and more than 200 official delegations have been invited.

For the first time, Eurosatory is hosting a start-up challenge in partnership with Agorize. This competition is open to start-ups from all over the world. Participants will have to propose an innovation of a dual nature, likely to effectively transform the daily life of a Defence and Security actor in the exercise of its missions. The winning start-up will receive prizes including a presence at the exhibition where it will play a key role in the development of disruptive technologies.

the experience and continuous improvement derived from supplying more than 300,000 platform computing and networking devices for the U.S. and International military across a wide range of application types. Supporting Key Combat Apps While designed to be plug-and-play for any number of platforms and operational systems, the Leonardo DRS system already supports Line of Sight (LOS) and Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) communications for a full-circle ability to reach mobile, airborne, or dismounted troops, while also supporting Tactical LTE and Mobile SatCom on the move technologies.

All the voice, video and data from these platform devices can be connected across the tactical network with adjacent platforms, remote or mobile command posts, higher headquarters and, when desired, with coalition partners.

An open architecture approach enables system integrators to build a scalable capability for use at all echelons, from dismounted soldier to Brigade HQ. Leonardo DRS’ next generation tactical hardware capability builds upon the strengths of its predecessors with faster processing speeds, memory and increasing I/O flexibility.

The fourth generation Data Distribution Unit (DDU Block 4) is a highly integrated and extremely rugged mission critical computing/ network server that simultaneously supports hosting of applications, management of network infrastructures, collection and streaming of sensor data. It can also host virtual machine capabilities to permit multiple operating systems and applications running concurrently while also providing low-latency sensor and data distribution capabilities.

The DDU Block 4 is a Vehicle Processor Unit (VPU) that enables improved situational awareness and understanding by permitting the integration of voice, video and data streams related to the Common Operating Picture (COP), Communications, Platform Sensors and vetronics. The DDU permits a true convergence of multiple computers and displays into a common mounted computing environment (MCE). Additionally, the architecture supports embedded RFID for In-Transit Visibility (ITV) of logistics data and can even monitor CANBUS and MIL-STD 1553 databus information to provide the automatic collection and analysis of onboard vehicle diagnostics for Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) or Embedded Diagnostics.

The system is transport layer agnostic and integrates LOS, BLOS, SATCOM on the move (SOTM), legacy analog systems, the latest generation Software Defined Radios (SDR) and commercial LTE and Wi-Fi. Leonardo DRS can provide its capabilities either as discrete products or as fully integrated C4/5I systems to include vehicle and command post platform design and integration support, network design and planning, Battle Management Systems (BMS) Systems integration Labs (SILS) in support of system and network development, testing and training along with full-service support and logistics.

currently fielded in the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps. In the Middle East, both the UAE and Bahrain Land Forces have adopted a DDU based mission systems architecture for their Tactical C4/5I systems. The AC2ES capability is easily implemented without additional space or weight requirements. The DDU also allows for integration of Assured Position, Navigation, and Timing (A-PNT) functionality with the Battle Management System (BMS) in a currently fielded Line Replaceable Unit (LRU). The DDU is the ideal source of A-PNT not only because it is a critical user of PNT, but also because it can provide A-PNT distribution to all other devices needing PNT within the vehicle without making any additional Size, Weight, and Power (SWAP) changes.

Emerging Capabilities - Next Gen Tactical Computing, APNT & Cyber Leonardo DRS continue to invest in and develop our core C5I capabilities. Two examples of note are in the areas of Assured Position Navigation and Timing (A-PNT) and Cyber Security. In the modern battlefield, it is equally important to know accurate “time” as it is to know your position. If timing information from the GPS is unavailable or cannot be trusted, it is critical to have access to other sources for execution of the mission. For example, the Leonardo DRS A-PNT Converged Computer - Embedded and Scalable, or AC2ES, offers a choice of multiple timing holdup modules that increase accuracy proportionately with cost. AC2ES offers a unique benefit to users since they can select the accuracy level needed for their mission purpose and avoid paying unnecessary costs for higher capability levels. Designed with extensibility and future growth in mind, customers can tailor their system configuration based on the military unit’s mission profile, operational needs, and budget. This ability to tailor the configuration offers different tiers of AC2ES capabilities throughout the echelons of the modern fighting force. All Warfighters now have access to resilient A-PNT capabilities that integrates with existing or new Leonardo DRS tactical computing systems.

As the enemy adapts, AC2ES provides the fighting force with the system flexibility to conduct modular upgrades, facilitating precision mission execution.

The vehicle operator uses the BMS’s Graphical User Interface (GUI) on a rugged display to view and manage Mission Command functions, GPS, and A-PNT on a single pane of glass, including distribution to all vehicle PNT users. AC2ES provides A-PNT capability by augmenting standard military GPS PNT sources with technologies such as anti-jam, anti-spoof, M-code receivers, additional RF sources, vehicle Infra-Red (IR) sensor vision navigation, wheel rotation and inertial measurement units (IMUs). The fusion engine merges and prioritizes all PNT sensor data to provide a reliable, GPS-denied navigation solution during real world jamming and spoofing attacks. The AC2ES capability operates standalone, or while hosting the vehicle’s BMS and is controlled via its GUI.

AC2ES is a solution to Global Positioning System (GPS) disruption designed to always provide A-PNT information. Developed with Size, Weight,Power and Cost (SWAP-C) efficiency in mind, AC2ES is embedded in our widely used Data Distribution Unit (DDU). The DDUx II and military variants are

In addition to attacks targeting operating system vulnerabilities, modern threats are aggressively targeting BIOS and firmware subsystems within the computers themselves. Successful exploits at

this level are extremely difficult to detect and nearly impossible to remove. Establishment of a Hardware Root of Trust (HRoT) and implementation of Transitive Trust Chains are key technologies for protecting against these threats. In 2007, Leonardo DRS began embedment and provisioning of Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs) in fleet-base tactical computers. Since then, the company has continued to develop and expand its use of this technology and is now considered an industry leader in embedded cybersecurity.

In 2011, Leonardo DRS began development of a dedicated secure TPM Provisioning Room containing the TPM Provisioning Server and the associated Hardware Security Module (HSM). This Server – Client Provisioning system has become the cornerstone for verifying integrity, mitigating supply chain risks, and provisioning of tactical computers in a high volume-manufacturing environment.

These technologies are critical for establishing a HRoT that can then be used as

the basis for making integrity measurements of the computer’s subsystems.

Leonardo DRS has developed embedded cybersecurity Edge-AssuredTM technologies, based on industry standards, but customized for use at the tactical edge. The technologies provide secure storage of signing and encryption keys, custom secure boot signatures, trusted boot with hardware whitelist, random and unique-per-computer BIOS passwords, trusted factory assertion of TPM ownership, TPM/Trusted boot coordinated unlocking of self-encrypting drives, secure system updates, and access to TCG Software Stack (TSS) trusted middleware.

New L-Band RF over Fiber Solution for Air Force Satcom Telemetry The Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), in the USA, is a scientific research organization that is responsible for planning and executing the US Air Force (USAF) science and technology program in order to improve and develop new products and services.

Compact, single link and available in RF bands up to 6 GHz, the links were an ideal fit. They can be operated as either transmitters or receivers and are easily mounted into existing equipment. AFRL explained that they’d decided on the links based on their performance, best in class quality and reliability.

Craig Somach, ViaLite Director of Sales, said: “We are pleased to continue supporting AFRL; helping with the advanced satellite and terrestrial infrastructure they operate across multiple satellite transponders and locations.” Craig and the team were also on hand to provide service and support to AFRL during the equipment installation process.

The AFRL approached RF over fiber manufacturers, ViaLite Communications, to deliver a solution for a satellite communications downlink, transferring the L-Band signals through the ground station complex.

ViaLite’s L-Band HTS links, in the standalone Blue OEM module format, were selected by AFRL for integration into their system.

As well as OEM module format, the links are available as rack chassis cards (for use in ViaLite 3U and 1U rack chassis units), as Yellow OEM modules (designed for system integrators and equipment manufacturers to build into their own designs) and in the ViaLite Blue2 module which houses two links and can be setup to be a dual transmitter, dual receiver or transceiver.

ViaLite Adds Resilience to Critical GPS Timing Services Module products from Focus Telecom for jamming protection.

ViaLite’s RF over fiber systems can carry GPS/GNSS timing signals over long distances with very low signal degradation. However, the same cannot be said of GPS signals before they reach the GPS/GNSS antenna, as these weak radio waves are highly susceptible to jamming or spoofing.

The GPS Resilient Kit has two GPS antennas, which enables the direction of the attack to be pinpointed. At its heart is the small OtoSphere Protection Module, which has a unique interference filtering algorithm that combines the patterns from the two omnidirectional antennas.

The module can analyze the direction the interference is coming from and feed it into its algorithm, directing a null towards the unwanted signal to reject and reduce disruptions.

Timing-critical infrastructures in areas such as defense and cyber security can now be protected from this kind of attack by installing one of ViaLite’s new GPS Protection Packages. The packages integrate either the GPS Resilient Kit or OtoSphere™ Protection

Using OtoSphere, GPS receivers are up to 50 times more resilient to jamming attacks on positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) systems compared with having no protection. The GPS receiver is able to continue working normally throughout the attack.

“ViaLite customers typically need the highest grade of reliability and service, particularly for critical infrastructure timing applications. With the increase in jamming threats, both land-based and maritime, these Focus Telecom antijamming products are a perfect complement to our range of GPS/GNSS signal distribution solutions,” said Richard Jacklin, ViaLite Director of Sales.

The Protection Packages can be integrated into new installations or retrofitted to existing ViaLite systems. The GPS Resilient Kit and OtoSphere are already IP-rated, so they can be simply added to outdoor installations. Alternatively, for a full package solution the OtoSphere module can be integrated into the ViaLite ODE-MINI outdoor enclosure.

Acceleration, Vibration, Radiation...

It’s A Jungle Out There.

Q

uartz crystal oscillators are the frequency source of choice for a variety of functions in virtually all military and aerospace systems.

However some of their superior qualities, such as high frequency stability and low noise, can quickly degrade when they are exposed to the extreme operating environments associated with these applications.

Shock and Vibration Effects For oscillators used on mobile platforms, vibration and shock effects can be significant. While crystal oscillators can be designed to withstand extreme levels, these effects can be the limiting factor that determines the achievable performance in any given system.

Random vibration, for example, will show up on the output spectrum of the oscillator as an increase in the noise floor. The amount of degradation is determined by (1) the level of vibration and (2) the acceleration sensitivity of the oscillator. The effect can range from barely noticeable to catastrophic. The severe vibration experienced on a missile system or other airborne platform can cause phase noise to degrade by as much as 50dB to 60dB.

Temperature Extremes The temperature conditions often present in military and aerospace environments are another critical factor that impacts signal source performance.

The frequency vs. temperature characteristic of the oscillator will be determined primarily by the quartz crystal itself. Most MHz range crystals are cut to conform to a temperature curve in the “AT” family of cuts. The temperature coefficient of these crystals is relatively flat compared to other passive components.

Even over the wide range of -55°C to +125°C, the frequency error can be as small as ±20ppm.

For many applications better stability may be needed – and temperature compensation can be added in order to reduce temperature error to <1ppm.

Radiation Environments When a device will be deployed in space, some level of radiation tolerance is required.

For satellites deployed in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), radiation tolerance of up to 50 krad(Si) TID (total ionizing dose) is required. TID is a cumulative deteriorating effect over time at some rate.

Deep space and other missions will require a tolerance of 200 krad(Si) TID or greater. Single Event Effects that can occur randomly – due to impact with a heavily charged particle – must also be taken into consideration.

Oscillator design for radiation tolerance also demands close attention to all the components that are used in the device. While most passive components are inherently radiation tolerant to a high level, some commercial semiconductors are sensitive to TID levels of only a few thousand krad(Si).

Radiation hardened devices are manufactured with special processes and are extensively screened and tested on a lot-by-lot basis, with an attendant increase in cost. The trend for commercial LEO satellite systems, for example, is to carefully evaluate and test lower cost COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf ) components to find designs with acceptable performance.

This approach requires a certain level of risk acceptance that may not be appropriate for military and related applications.

JFD awarded contract by Navantia to support Spanish Navy’s new Submarine Rescue Mothership JFD, the world leading underwater capability provider serving the commercial and defence diving markets and part of James Fisher and Sons plc, was awarded a contract by Navantia to conduct a Ship Survey and Suitability Assessment of the Spanish Navy’s new Submarine Rescue Mothership (BAM-IS).

The contract gave JFD - a world leader in the design, build and operation of submarine rescue systems - responsibility for completing an initial assessment of the design, to ensure the new vessel will be capable of embarking such systems.

It is a critical requirement that in the event of a Distressed Submarine (DISSUB), there is an available vessel that can host submarine rescue system equipment, as well as support the other necessary aspects of a rescue. Not having a suitable vessel available will likely result in delays, which can have catastrophic consequences.

Navantia, the Spanish state-owned military shipbuilding company, is in the process of completing the preliminary design for the BAM-IS. The new Mothership (MOSHIP) will replace the Spanish Navy’s existing vessel which is not adapted to host submarine rescue systems. www.militarysystems-tech.com

4GD to deliver “smart” urban warfare training targets to the British Army Immersive close combat training technology specialists, 4GD, have been awarded a contract to supply first-tomarket smart urban warfare training targets to the British Army.

SimStriker, which first started development in lockdown in 2020, represents a new generation of intelligent training adversary and is set to add a layer of tactical performance analysis to the 4GD SmartFacility currently in service with the 16 Air Assault Brigade in Colchester.

The target is fitted with “hit-zone” sensors capable of accurately recording the precision and fire rate of soldiers. in particular, in terms of performance, cost, and (in A&D and other applications in which imaging systems are often gimbal-mounted) space and weight.

One arena that presents particularly interesting opportunities for us to go above and beyond in accommodating our customers’ special requirements is SWIR – Short-Wave Infrared.

How does G&H achieve this?

All in-house – from expertise to materials The answer lies not solely in the technical detail, but also in how G&H as an organisation operates, combining multi-disciplinary expertise hubs with highestquality materials sourced or produced mainly within the G&H network.

One arena that presents particularly interesting opportunities for us to go above and beyond in accommodating our customers’ special requirements is SWIR – short-wave Infrared.

This in-house “virtuous circle” drives innovation not only in system design, but in adapting and reengineering existing solutions to create specific variants – e.g. ruggedised - based on customer feedback.

SWIR is favoured for many applications because it delivers a number of benefits over other wavelengths. At long ranges and in low visibility conditions, for example, the signal-to-noise ratio and image quality in the SWIR band are significantly better than in other bands such as NIR and the visible spectrum.

Our ruggedisation expertise derives, in turn, from our many years’ experience of developing radiation-hard optical systems used in used in Earth observation, planetary exploration missions, and autonomous docking systems in space.

This tends also to result in more stable, error-tolerant imaging, delivering an extended range of coverage and better image interpretability, and making SWIR a good fit for many ground, air, maritime, and space deployments.

The best way to illustrate how we tackle the challenges of SWIR system ruggedisation whilst incorporating optimal SWAP-C (size, weight, power, and cost) characteristics is probably to focus on one particular SWIR solution we produce: the 40-400 mm lens system.

SWIR: where the challenges begin Of course, these benefits are ultimately dependent on both the quality and resilience of the lenses and opto-mechanical lens systems used to capture the image – and this is where some challenges arise that G&H is particularly practiced in solving for our customers.

SWIR 40-400 mm: a case study in light, cost-effective ruggedisation Developed in response to a market need for a CZ (continuous zoom) SWIR solution that would couple out-of-the-box integration capability with ruggedised performance, the FireAnt 40-400 mm SWIR is an agile reworking of an existing CZ SWIR solution that has delivered proven high performance to many of our customers.

In short, this is about reconciling two apparently conflicting requirements: the need for super-sensitive, highly accurate SWIR optical solutions, but in a form that resists the extremes of temperature, shock, humidity, vibration, and even radiation inherent in many of the harsh environments (A&D, space) in which those solutions are often deployed.

However, it’s important to note that many of the approaches and benefits we explore below apply across our lens system solutions for other bands, too.

At the same time, it is about delivering solutions with the low SWAP-C (size, weight, power, and cost) characteristics that render them operationally deployable and economically viable to produce.

Size, weight, power, and cost: an optimum balance On the SWAP-C front, the FireAnt 40-400 mm system’s unique single aperture design, coupled with its folded geometry, deliver a much shorter track length and smaller physical footprint, enabling (for example) one gimbal window to accommodate multiple sensors, and SWIR imaging to be combined with other bands in one package.

Here’s how we design this “ruggedisation” into every feature and behaviour optical, electro-mechanical, spatial, structural – of our SWIR and other products and developments, and ensure that the process is agile, adaptive, and customercentric.

From the lens backwards: a catalogue of harsh conditions

This reduction in size and bulk of course also helps to optimise weight, whilst power efficiency is enabled through an electronic control board that closely controls power consumption.

First, let’s take a closer look at our customers’ challenges, and then we’ll move on to how our facility in Keene, New Hampshire – which specialises in custom optical and opto-mechanical analysis and design for lightweight, ruggedised solutions – has developed responses to address them.

Cost optimisation is achieved by standardisation of the core design and components, and by automated testing routines. Some of these functions include automatic focal length measurement, automatic distortion measurement where the field of view is mapped to the image diagonal, and automatic metric zoom table generation where measured focal lengths are mapped to specific encoder positions in zoom lenses. Taken in combination, G&H engineers accelerate the journey from proof of concept to production run, enabling a lower overall unit cost for a higher-quality output.

At the fore in any imaging system is the lens, and harsh environments bring some testing challenges for these precision optics.

Vibration and shock, for example, can play havoc with the stability of lens mountings, causing lens displacement that results in tip, tilt, and de-centre issues, and significantly degrades optical performance.

Standing up to the harshest conditions

Adequately constraining the lens is therefore critical – but temperature can also cause expansion and contraction, which, if the constraint is too tight, can subject the surface to stress and strain, causing similar degradation.

On the ruggedisation front, the FireAnt 400-400 mm lens system, as with the other variants G&H develops, is the product of extensive design, engineering, and testing processes.

After the lens, the opto-mechanical elements are also susceptible to harsh environments. Expansion and contraction in these systems in response to temperature changes, if not coordinated with the behaviour of the optics, can once again cause stresses and strains on the lens that impair its performance.

Using a combination of tools including Zemax, Fred Optical Engineering Software (FRED), SolidWorks 2020 and SolidWorks Simulation 2020, G&H’s engineers went through a rigorous FEA (finite element analysis) process to model the effect of harsh environments on both the optics and associated systems. They then used these outputs to design, apply, and test the ruggedisation from the lens backwards.

Finally, the electronic elements – control boards, motors, and encoders – are also affected by harsh conditions, with PCBs, connectors, and wiring all being particularly susceptible to damage by temperature, shock, and vibration.

Glass selection (Schott or Ohara for example), shaping, and lens edge thickness were all optimised, for mountings that would constrain adequately for resistance to shock, vibration, and deformation, but not become overtight with temperaturedriven expansion and contraction.

The entire lens system, then, needs to be designed and engineered in such a way that all the critical components behave with both individual and collective robustness, but without consequences for the value delivered to the customer – www.militarysystems-tech.com

The effect of temperature on the relationship between optics and opto-mechanics was also closely modelled, and adjustments made to the motor focus to prevent poor interplay between these elements that could cause optical degradation.

Here, again, the FireAnt SWIR 40-400 mm has proven its worth. Approached by a customer to investigate whether a change to the mounting bolts to gain space in a gimbal environment would render their lens system susceptible to harsh environment impacts, we were able to comprehensively model the proposed design change and confirm that their proposal was still a viable ruggedised product.

All individual PCB components were tested for resistance to temperature, shock, and vibration, military-specification connectors were specified throughout (as these meet the requirements of harsh conditions), and wiring was strain-relief tested to ensure resistance to shock and vibration.

Doubtless, this saved the customer considerable time and expense as reworking the gimbal design was avoided.

Finally, as-built tolerances were engineered to safely accommodate vibration and gravitational forces and remain stable, yet deliver a fit that would enable optimum manufacturability.

Ruggedisation in the real world

Combined with active and passive athermalisation, AR coatings that strike an optimum balance between performance and durability, and IP67+ sealing for protection against ingress of dust and sand, the SWIR 40-400 mm solution is proof that resilience need not necessarily come at the cost of performance.

In summary, then, SWIR imaging solutions, including SWIR 40-400 mm, are particularly suited to applications and platforms that now see them in daily use in everything from laser targeting visualisation, to maritime fog/haze penetration, to mid to long-range surveillance – and often in space-constrained deployments such as gimbals.

In fact, FireAnt 40-400 mm delivers exactly the same level of SWIR imaging performance and the same technical and market differentiators to our customers as its predecessor – continuous zoom, continuous focal length, constant light throughout F# stops, exact object distances with no drift or lag, and more – but in a significantly more robust package.

At the same time, expectation of these systems’ performance is spiralling. With the sensor market moving rapidly towards moving towards 1280 x 1024 array the days of an optical lens system simply being a VGA camera are gone forever.

However, whilst performance, size, weight, and compactness are all critical factors in these environments, the most critical factor of all is whether the device will actually work properly when it’s in situ – or deliver disappointing results.

Ruggedisation expertise as a service At G&H, we don’t just pride ourselves on the engineering expertise that goes into our products - we put that expertise at the service of our customers directly, to help support their own downstream product development.

The difference between those two outcomes is ruggedisation. Quite simply, ruggedisation is now an inseparable requirement from the use of SWIR itself for many applications.

This is as true of ruggedisation as of any other optical engineering process we can deliver, across any imaging band - as we say, “Any wavelength, any sensor, any application.”

New Unmanned Equipment: Evolution of Connector Systems Unmanned equipment and technology systems are expanding rapidly, and we are developing new systems that can expand our reach and capabilities using remote controlled equipment.

But we are also adding to the challenges and demands upon the electronics that serve and drive them.

The smaller and lighter weight connectors allow longer flight times and can offer more maneuvering capability in hand launched aerial systems. Many ISR circuits are using solid state chips that run at digital Gigabit speeds.

High speed surveillance, and image displays demand high signal integrity of the connectors as well. UAV video capture rates are climbing as we install devices that send 20 megapixel images at 60 frames per second and compressed into transmission or storage onboard. This totals to over 7 gigabits/sec transmission of digital data.

Remote devices now serve us, spanning from simple ground-based robotics to drones mounted with cameras and onto rovers on Mars.

Each new system appears to start by using COTs and standard connectors on their prototype modules. As the design evolves, new design needs arise. Emphasis changes include size reduction, shape fitting and mounting requirements. Extremely rugged connectors may need to carry enough current to control heavy machinery used in dangerous conditions.

Circular connectors that had been used in ruggedized equipment and machinery have begun to evolve in many ways to serve these industries. To meet today’s demand for small diameter connectors, many manufacturers are scaling down older designs to add to their existing lines. The popular MIL-DTL-38999 Circular connector uses 18-20 size pins to carry up to 12 Amps on 20 AWG wiring. A smaller 38999 connector is being standardized by a number of companies working with the DLA for a down-sized Mil. Spec. version that will be a smaller size, more universally available circular connector with a triple-start thread coupling system. It will mate quickly and have EMI shielding. This new standard will likely use size 23 pins and handle about 10 Amps on 20-22 AWG wire. Many companies already offer a smaller Micro-Circular connector line with size 24 pin/sockets that support 3 Amps on 24-30 AWG wire. Some of the smallest circular connectors offer the use of size 30 pins, support 1 Amp and 30-32 AWG wiring. In this size, note that pin to pin spacing drops from over 75 millimeter pitch, down to 25 mils. This, reduces the diameter of both the connector and the cable involved. Cable flexibility is improving simultaneously.

sent to automated machining equipment to build them to fit the new application exactly.

Unmanned connector systems must focus on rugged performance to survive the rigors of their application. Connector mating elements and housings are often critical. Connectors frequently use nickel plated 6061-T6 aluminum or hardened polymer shells contains the pin to socket elements inside. BeCu, (beryllium copper), flex pins are made to ASTM B194 and tempered to over 17200 ksi and then plated with nickel/gold. Low resistance is critical while retaining contact during shock and vibration of the oft-moving equipment. Wires most often use strengthened copper coated with Teflon® insulation.

Connectors are pretested for high reliability and long range performance.

Beyond customizing standard designs, connector designers now supply a wide range of mixed signal hybrid connectors. Often size and weight is significantly reduced by using only one cable and connector carrying both power and signal in the same system. These new hybrid connectors are also adjusted to meet the application that is specifically needed.

Many new circuits respond well to lower voltages and current flow and allow the connectors to be more compact. The newer and smaller ratcheting connectors mate-up easily and lock quickly while offering additional features such as being waterproof and use less panel mounting space on the instruments. Special ground wires, as well as use of braided cable shielding, is often used to protect the cable from both electrical and physical damage.

IF CBRN IN UKRAINE IS A POSSIBILITY CAN IT BE DEFENDED AGAINST? Lutra is frequently asked what the issues are in Ukraine in terms of the fighting and in particular the use of CBRN. n simplified form this is what we tell people. The stress has to be on “simplified” because that is what it is. There are lots of throw away lines any of which can be picked apart but in essence it is the situation.

There is not space here to cover the whole context but it is important to understand it. The press have covered the actual conduct of the fighting and it’s outcomes. We have got to a point where a number of stalemates are the result. The much vaunted Russian Armed Forces have been unable to complete Putin’s invasion plans in scope or timeframe. This does not mean though that its “game over”. There are probably several rolls of the dice to occur before that can be called and use of CBRN is one possible roll or series of rolls.

From generals downwards Russian soldiers have seen their political master and his friends getting richer whilst the gain share has not reached them. Couple all this with a propensity to make them look 10 feet tall especially in their own eyes and issues are bound to arise.

If there is lots of rubble infantry is king. Too much mud, too few roads and lots of rubble equals nowhere to go. Get stuck on a road unable to move and the result for a motivated, savvy, innovative defence is what the Americans call a target rich environment. The plan shuddered to a halt and Putin was left wondering what to do next.

The original plan was classic Soviet Military theory it would not have been out of place in West Germany. Advance on a broad front, aim to engage as many of the enemy as you can pin them down developing a line or two of main effort. Throw all your available forces down those lines to rapidly advance and achieve political and strategic objectives. So what went wrong?

How do you defend against CBRN? First look at the threat. Although successful in Syria the fact that the majority of his CW has been destroyed under Chemical Weapons Convention terms probably makes its availability and use unlikely. He may have some Novichok but unless he has set up a plant in total secrecy it will probably only be laboratory not war fighting stocks available. He could resort to use of toxic industrial chemicals e.g. Chlorine, as in Syria but the delivery methods:, barrels rolled out of helicopters or release from ground based cylinders are probably not viable against the Ukrainians with effective air defences and sophisticated surveillance devices. Russian helicopter and ground casualties so far would actively discourage others from such ventures.

Biological is too much of a two edged sword. You are as likely to kill or injure as many or more of your own side as the other and deployment and dissemination is a really difficult activity. At best it’s a long term option not a flick of the fingers, turn the switch effect. A threat yes but a slow burning one.

That all leaves a radiological threat. It’s probably best to leave the use of an ICBM off the list. By definition it would probably impact, in one way or another, a NATO member. Article 5 of the NATO Treaty would kick in and US, UK and French retaliation in kind would occur. Not his desired result. If he were to use battlefield nuclear warheads or Enhanced Radiation Munitions the same may be true. Strikes would have to be on territorial Ukraine with no overspill of radiation or fall out into neighbouring NATO members. Whilst feasible it’s probably not likely.

The best detectors and identifiers such as the Kromek D3/D5 range, but there are others, allow simple intuitive operation, have simple read outs and can be used as hand held or fixed devices. The information is in digital format as well as on the display allowing onward transmission by any means ranging from a smart phone to a secure radio. Then the data can be fed into a management system allowing further processing to calculate where radiation clouds may travel in the prevailing weather conditions. They can be used as hand held, deployable or fixed units, fixed to vehicles, UGVs and UAVs and so used remotely without having to deploy people into the contaminated area. Arguably by using your detectors correctly and if you do not have adequate protective equipment you can move your troops and civilians to areas that are not contaminated or are are less so. Detection is one of the building blocks, arguably the foundation, of CBRN defence.

Having captured the Chernobyl region and other Ukrainian nuclear power sites he has had access to radioactive material which is semi deniable, as if he needs more, and he could deploy that material by a number of means. This is probably the most likely course especially as he can deny it and claim it was the Ukrainians all along, as he has been crying out through his warped press, media and social media campaigns from before the start of the invasion.

Then the issue is how to protect the people involved. The best protection is avoidance. However defenders have to hold firm in position post strike. If you can not “avoid” firstly prevent inhalation. Some form of respiratory protection for individuals is required. Some would argue that collective protection for groups is important, so it is, but we are talking survival and a respirator although not as comfortable as collective protection prevents inhalation.

There are lots of imponderables to do with the use of radiation or nuclear options. Amongst other things radiation is a psychological weapon. Often the physical injuries are not as great as the fear of the effects that they generate which causes chaos and disruption amongst the population and less well trained forces. Just the sort of thing to threaten resolute defences with: well possibly.

Contamination control stems from good detection and identification. People who do not need to remain in position can be moved away i.e. avoid the contamination. The detectors can be used to control entry to clean areas and measures can be taken to clean contaminated people. Getting people into cover and keeping them clean is key. People who must enter contaminated areas have to be given protective clothing which they can change or clean when they come out of the contamination. There are lots of decontamination equipments available and in the absence of bespoke items extemporising can play a major part in radiological decontamination.

However would intelligent Russian soldiers venture into such dangerous areas post strike. If they won’t what would be the point of using these weapons.

Deliberate use of any of these weapons would almost certainly result in war crimes trials. How many senior Russians would put their neck on the block to save their president? Equally if Chernobyl taught anyone anything it was that radiation clouds are unpredictable as the Russian troops who occupied it have reportedly found out to their cost due to inhalation of dust stirred up by vehicles.

So how to defend against CBRN if used? First and foremost effective CBRN defence is a deterrent to the use of CBRN weapons of all sorts. Secondly the threat of retaliation and legal response such as war crimes are all part of defence. As for physical defence it’s a long term goal but in essence the mantra is the same for all CBRN Defence. An holistic defence is required. A chain formed of strong links. A weak link means there is no defence. The links, the taxonomies in the trade, are: detection and identification, protection for individuals and groups, contamination control including decontamination and countermeasures (including appropriate medical measures). All of these must be backed by education and training and effective information management. Each one of these would individually require a full edition to fully cover so the intention is to concentrate here on radiological detection first because it is probably the most important and then touch on some of the other taxonomies for radiological defence which will give a very rough and ready defence capability.

The data needs to be fed into a hazard management processing system. The Bruhn Newtech Analysis is probably the best and most available in the world and will speed up decision making, and therefore directing people away from contamination, and starting countermeasures.

All this needs to be backed by sound training. Argon Electronics provides a range of simulators which allow CBRN detection and Identification equipment to be realistically simulated in realistic scenarios to enable real time training exercises and confirmation that drills and skills are being implemented correctly.

This basic equipment set will allow defenders to defend and the survival of as many of the unprotected as possible. It’s not a perfect set but as a rough and ready compromise and first step it would work. Let us hope it’s not needed.

Effective detection allows you to: generate and manage and use the threat data, help decide whether an attack is real or a false alarm, if it’s an incident or an attack, bound the contaminated area, see whether the contamination is moving-that dust cloud, identify the threat ie it tells you how dangerous the isotope actually is, how much there is of it and its intensity. Impacts of GNSS interference on military systems In the light of the Ukrainian war, reports emerged that the full spectrum of Navigation Warfare is being used within Ukraine on both sides. This especially includes intentional GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) interference and has a significant influence on troop and also civilian operations in the area. The most recent reports of system malfunctions due to GNSS signal issues show that there is a clear need for improvement in terms of defence against Navigation Warfare attacks and training within Navigation Warfare environments.

What is interference?

Interference to GNSS can be unintentional (e.g., inter-system interference, multipath, etc.) or intentional.

Unintentional interference can generally be better controlled and mitigated. Intentional interference is categorized into the two main categories jamming and spoofing, which pose a significant risk to GNSS measurements.

Jamming denotes the transmission of highpowered signals with the goal to shadow the GNSS signals so that a receiver cannot acquire and track them. Ty T pical jamming signals are chirp or noise signals with a bandwidth matching or exceeding the bandwidth of the respective GNSS bands they target. In general, jamming detection can be performed pre-correlation or postcorrelation, while the most suitable approach depends on the type and possibilities of the receiver in use. Since different detectors have different advantages and disadvantages, an optimal jamming detector should be based on the combination of several detector values.

Background Due to their nature, GNSSs are susceptible to intentional interference without requiring very high signal power or overly complex equipment. The two main factors for the vulnerability of GNSS signals against interference are the low received signal power (below thermal noise) and the open and publicly known signal structure.

Although modernized signals counter the vulnerabilities by employing more sophisticated modulation schemes like higher-order binary offset carrier (BOC) or incorporating authentication features, these countermeasures cannot provide perfect interference mitigation and also many systems still rely on older signals.

Governmental authorities, armed forces, system integrators and GNSS equipment manufacturers should be aware of the danger caused by GNSS signal interference.

They should get the possibility to test their equipment in a protected and realistic environment to assess vulnerabilities and improve equipment in order to better tackle GNSS interference.

Spoofing denotes the transmission of fake GNSS signals with the goal to falsify (spoof) the position, velocity and time (PVT) solution of the receiver under attack. For this, spoofing signals have to be modulated in the same way than authentic satellites are modulated and also the navigation messages usually have to be mimicked for

a spoofing attack to work well. Typical spoofing attacks rely on either a GNSS signal generator or a modified (usually software-defined) GNSS receiver.

GNSS interference in military systems Interference has multiple potential impacts on military systems. The most common impact is the complete loss of GNSS reception, which results in loss of position, navigation and time. The effects of spoofing are even more dangerous than those of jamming because the falsified position is often not noticed and the integrity of the GNSS application is not doubted.

The consequences of a GNSS interference attack are, in addition to a total loss of PNT capabilities, also increasing the own risk, collateral damage and leadership problems.

However, since the use of GNSS and PNT will continue to increase in the future, it can be assumed that jamming and spoofing will continue to increase. Navigation Warfare would therefore also affect the use of navigation systems in the public domain and for each individual.

Detection of GNSS spoofing is more complex than jamming detection given the different nature of the attack, where a finetuned spoofing cannot necessarily be seen in the frequency spectrum. While some published spoofing detection algorithms target multiple antennas or are only applicable with relative movement between spoofer and receiver, the approach of GIDAS (GNSS Interference Detection & Analysis System) developed by OHB Digital Solutions is suitable for a static single-antenna receiver, which is considered to facilitate

INTRODUCTION TO THE LIGHTWEIGHT AMMUNITION CASE It is not often that a very old (nearly a century) design of a military item can be refreshed resulting in major operational and environmental benefits to the whole of defence (and many civilian fields).

Yet that is the case with what turns out to be a ground breaking advance from PlastPackDefence (PPD), a small Danish company that has completely rethought the concept of ammunition boxes.

The reality is more complex. PPD was set up by a group of people with decades of experience in the defence and packaging industries who were determined to bring civil best practice and state of the art technology to solve the problems caused by nearly a century of resistance to change and embedded technology in military packaging.

PPD has developed a sustainable and re-useable ammunition package solution Lightweight Ammunition Case (LWAC) - that hugely increases combat power on operations – as a force multiplier and achieves Defence environmental targets for Net Zero 30 or 50.

Testing Up to UN and Military Standards Once PPD had the design and industrial strategies lined up and units could be manufactured, testing and customer engagement became the biggest priorities. The two are part and parcel of the same thing. One of the biggest issues was sorting out what exactly was intended and meant when the test specifications were written nearly a century ago. This had to be resolved.

Many of the tests were being carried out because “we have always done that” and “we have always done it this way”. No one had an answer to the simple question “but why?”.

LWAC has been called “the biggest ground breaking advance in military logistics since motor transport”. PPD will be exhibiting LWAC on stand DC 711 in Hall 5A at Eurosatory.

many other indignities all of which were passed or overcome. In the course of the tests a number of unexpected results were identified, all beneficial, but with no way of recording the benefits. All parties are working out how to recognise these and award credit for them.

The LWAC box achieves several essential improvements at the DPA: • Better overview of the ammunition (live, blank, color, natures etc.) and items in stock • Logistical standardization and traceability of ammunition packaging and handling, from depot, transport, usage at the ranges (live, simulation etc.)- and back again

Training The first benefit to emerge was what a fantastic aid to training the LWAC is. First the ability to colour code the LWAC means that training ammunition is easily recognised, can be stacked separately and with the use of RFID expenditure can be easily traced and accounted for rapidly at start and finish of work. This brings noticeably greater efficiency to training and to store keeping.

Logistic Packaging of Insensitive Munitions

An LWAC case story is the Danish Police Academy (DPA), www.politi.dk/politiskolen achieving some of these improvements. DPA uses a wide choice of box colors and RFIDtags to secure `track and trace` and the easy handling of the boxes for re-packaging . All of which leads to savings in time, flexibility and operating speed. LWAC- has brought peace of mind, for instructors and students alike, with logistic, operational and tactical improvements.

The issue of insensitive munitions is an intriguing one. The subject in UK is covered by Joint Service Publication (JSP) 520 Part 2: Volume 11 (issue 4.2). Each country has its own version and they are all heavily influenced by UN and NATO requirements.

In testing to meet some of the IM requirements specifically the fire and explosion hazards testers and PPD staff noticed a significant benefit from using LWAC rather than steel cases such as M2A1 (M83 in UK). This involves a significant reduction in flying debris and fragments which apart from being hazards in their own right also cause collateral and sympathetic damage.

The DPA forms the starting point for developing and maintaining the National Police training and competence development. The education in handling firearms and shooting forms a `common thread` in all other training aspects of the school including a positive understanding of overall safety issues. The LWAC box system plays a significant part in reinforcing good behaviors towards ammunition storage and handling. improvement in combat capability, and less litigation payment, less of a drain on the defence budget.

Green Defence The driving force behind much of the redesign and adoption of LWAC was to bring military packaging into line with civilian trends to reduce the environmental impact of military packaging. It is important to stress that this is not just the materials and components of the packaging itself but the effect of reducing the environmental impact through the whole supply network. In Denmark this is referred to as Green Defence.

To some it may seem trivial but there are other benefits of LWAC. It is ideal for carrying stores, rations and dry clothes and keeping them dry in harsh environments. Except when really heavily loaded it floats keeping them dry and recoverable during a river crossing or amphibious landing. The Danish Army uses it to store coffee and ration sets for deployment in harsh terrain.

The biggest change is a reduction in weight. Each fully packed LWAC is 2kg less weight than its steel equivalent, a 68% weight reduction.

Stretching further into the defence budget, it means less barracks or more soldiers or more fighting troops, less emissions producing more population friendly defence forces, less tyre scrub-a major cause of pollution and cost, fewer maintenance troops and so on. LWAC and other patented developments truly are ground breaking products producing more capability for less pollution and bringing this neglected area of defence into the modern age

That quickly racks up a whole range of benefits. Less logistic transport, each 6t truck will be able to carry 10% more ammunition. Each helicopter will fly further or longer or carry more ammunition. For example for the PIRANHA (armoured infantry vehicle) it’s an additional 10 more cases of .50cal ammunition or 450 km range.

The same is true of long haul resupply. The Danish MoD has calculated that in 2010 switching to LWAC would have saved €1.14M in fuel alone for C130s. Other savings on logistic vehicles and the like were not calculated but the US DoD has shown that there are significant savings in lives and costs by reducing the number of vehicles in convoys by switching to LWAC. All this does not include the wear and tear on platforms, operational or logistic, soldier working time or alternatively increasing the fighting capability in other ways.

Future Prospects LWAC is the first container produced. Work is underway on the PA120 in cooperation with Rheinmetall Waffe and Munitions for the 40 mm grenade carrier and work is being started up with partners, on a range of small and medium calibre munition cases.

In applications like military and commercial transportation, electrical failure can be costly. Originally designed for NATO combat vehicles, reverse bayonet connectors simply need a 120° turn to mate, enabling fast and effortless mating and un-mating. Their design also allows the user to confirm mating in three different ways: tactile, audible and visual. The user feels the connector lock into position when mated. A loud click is heard as the three studs snap into place when the coupling nut is fully engaged.

To achieve this, reverse bayonet connectors use insulators and grommets made from chloroprene. This synthetic rubber is extremely durable, is a good electrical insulator. This is important in commercial transportation, military and industrial settings where varying temperatures and exposure to environmental contaminates are common. For some rail applications, specialised “low-smoke” inserts are used that comply with rail industry flammability standards.

Additionally, a coloured triangle on the receptacle aligns with a dot on the coupling nut when the connector is properly mated.

These simple design features ensure that the user can be confident the connector is mated, and significantly reduces the risk of accidental de-coupling. If, for example, reverse bayonets are being used in the communications equipment of a military vehicle, accidental decoupling due to user error or excessive vibration could be detrimental to safety.

Designed in alignment with the SOSA ™ Technical Standard, PR A11/61d-RCR provides resilient PNT data for sensor based solu ons that are used in Electronic Warfare and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance applica ons.

As a key differen ator, PR A11/61d-RCR is ITAR free and is designed and built in the UK u lising technology licensed from Racelogic, another UK company specialising in posi oning data.

In normal opera on, PR A11/61d-RCR sources highly accurate PNT data from a built in GNSS receiver and uses this to discipline a Chip Scale Atomic Clock (CSAC). This, in turn, feeds radial clock signals to the signal processing plug in cards that make up a VPX based sensor subsystem. In periods of GNSS denial or jamming, accurate PNT data con nues to be provided by u lising signals from a built in Iner al Measurement Unit and sophis cated Kalman filtering techniques.

The ming slot on most commercially available backplanes supports one or two 10GBASE-KR pipes and PR A11/61d-RCR is controlled using one or other of these pipes. Bussed clock signals are also supported for backwards compa bility with older VPX systems

THE PROGRESSION TO HIGH FIDELITY SURVIVAL TRAINING If risk is involved accidents happen. In the event of a catastrophic incident, survival rate is frequently dependent on prior training. why helicopters were crashing, what happened when they did crash into water (usually inversion based on the high centre of gravity associated with engine mass being on top), what happened during the crash, and what happened after the aircraft had stopped moving.

Early training to help aircrew survive a ditching was actually exacerbating the problem. Defence forces were primarily, and almost, the only operators of helicopters over water. Along with Defence having major concerns, helicopter manufacturers and survivors of incidents became determined to prevent their colleagues undergo similar fatal consequences. There was a need to understand the training required, the equipment to facilitate such training, and the mechanisms to deliver the training.

Research and development had shown that disorientation is a significant factor in ditching fatalities. To help in the development of training outcomes to counter disorientation, the psychology and physiological effects of disorientation had to be defined, understood, and be repeatedly replicated in a safe, controlled training environment. To ensure that the training environment replicated the operational environment and allowed the trainee the best opportunity to learn the required egress skill sets whilst experiencing the effects of disorientation, a high-fidelity training simulator was required. This simulator needed to replicate the aircraft in terms of airframe configuration, exit function, seat position and aircraft furniture in relation to exit, harness operation, etc. Trainees needed to be trained in the equipment in which they operate to afford them the highest degree of realistic training and probability of survival.

Those who fly aircraft or operate boats or vehicles: over, on, or near the water are subject to the risks of ditching and frequently overturn.

They are faced with a survival situation potentially of sudden impact followed by being turned upside down and immersed in cold water. Reaction has to be intuitive, reflexive, and based on muscle memory skill sets learned in high-fidelity training environments. Training for these critical skill sets are among the most difficult subjects for individuals who form crews of military aircraft, vehicles or water-craft to achieve when upside down and/or under water and escape, or egress, become the priority and the necessity. Survival Systems Limited (SSL) of Nova Scotia, Canada, is an acknowledged expert in provision of safe, highfidelity simulator systems used in training for these eventualities. Thoughts in the aviation industry were initially to utilise an actual helicopter airframe cleaned up and stripped to produce a mock-up of the helicopter for which incumbents were being trained. These first so-called Helicopter

Naturally this focused on training helicopter aircrew based on the unreasonably high percentage of ditchings resulting in fatal accidents that involved drowning whilst trapped in the helicopter.

Cost effective, efficient, multi-role, safe training solutions are paramount when Defence Forces choose their training system. In the continuum of a ditching event once the aircrew egresses the airframe the situation has not ended. Survivors are then faced with surviving at sea. This is contingent on how the individual copes with the survival equipment available to them and the environmental conditions in which they are now immersed.

Survival in open water environmental conditions could mean coping with the effects of: cold water, waves, wind, sea spray, rain, lightning, fog, night conditions etc. Survival Systems Limited has developed a complete training theatre that allows trainees to learn necessary sea survival skill sets in a high-fidelity environment that simulates all environmental conditions that could be experienced. TITANIS DRONE DEFEAT It is expected that unmanned aerial systems (UAS) will be used increasingly for malicious purposes as the cameras, weapons, toxic chemicals and explosives they are able to carry will be used for acts of terrorism, espionage and smuggling.

The Titanis Counter UAS (C-UAS) system has been developed by EOS to address the growing threat from malicious and threatening unmanned aircraft systems.

Based on the EOS R-Series remote weapon stations (RWS), Titanis is a fully integrated, scalable C-UAS suite combining speci c detection, command and control (C2), and layered hard and soft kill defeat capabilities necessary to acquire, track, and defeat swarming UAS threats.

The Titanis system allows the operators to match kill solutions to large numbers and varying combinations of small and large drones to ensure that the threat can be mitigated regardless of their direction, numbers and capabilities while managing the environmental, geographic, airspace and personnel safety considerations.

A typical all-up Titanis con guration incorporates direct re engagement systems, passive and active soft kill electronic warfare (EW) systems, an integrated sensor suiteincluding Pulse-Doppler, software-de ned radar, day/thermal camera, laser range nder and radio frequency (RF) detection systems - and an optional directed energy (DE) kill system.

These systems sit together with, and are integrated through, a proprietary C2 and re control system developed by EOS. High volume re, point defence solutions, range from the 7.62mm Dillon Aero M134-

series minigun to larger calibre 30mm guns (e.g. the Northrop Grumman M230LF 30mm cannon with EOS R400S Mk2 RWS, or Mk44 II Bushmaster chain gun with the heavier weight EOS R800 RWS) ring airburst munitions (including 30mm x 113mm proximity fused airbursts and 30mm x 173mm airburst rounds) to deliver C-UAS effects out to 3000m.

One of the key differences between C-UAS and other missions is the high angular speed that can be achieved by the UAS at relatively short range. EOS RWS have been modi ed with a fourth-axis independently slewing sensor unit that can move independently in azimuth to track fast-moving targets. A 1-Hz laser provides laser ranging and tracking throughout the engagement.

Passive and active soft kill EW systems, designed to operate across all-threat frequency bands are, as with the radar solutions, integrated according to customer preference.

Typical solutions include offerings from Blighter in the UK, Echodyne in the US and RADA in Israel.

Titanis’ DE system has been deployed with a 35kW high energy laser (HEL), although the HEL in its current format is capable of scaling to around 55kW. The HEL system has been demonstrated as a small containerised system; however, while the DE beam director is slightly different to a weapons station it has 60% commonality with the R400S RWS and will therefore be employable from deployable platforms.

Developed and manufactured in-house by EOS, the DE system – which includes the beam director, and co-mounted optical target identi cation and tracking system – is designed to address Groups I, II, and III UAS swarm threats, with high rates of target engagement, out to ranges of 4000m.

BLOCS is a label printing system and connects directly to Lincad’s in-service battery conditioners and chargers, the Armada, Caravel Mk2 and Four Channel Caravel Mk2. It allows batteries intended for use with military equipment to be flown safely around the world in adherence to IATA regulations, with full traceability.

were implemented following several high-profile cases where lithium-ion batteries were identified to be the cause of fires on aircraft. At less than 30% state of charge, lithium-ion batteries generally have insufficient energy to go into thermal runaway, a process which exacerbates the combustion process.

The regulatory changes initially proved problematic for manufacturers and shippers of lithium-ion batteries and Lincad was the first company to integrate a transport mode into its conditioners and chargers to allow the 30% state of charge limit to be achieved through the simple push of a button.

In 2016, IATA regulations changed to ensure that lithium-ion batteries could only be transported via cargo aircraft and only if they were at a state of charge of 30% or less. These regulatory changes

The BLOCS label printer is a further enhancement and automatically prints a status label for each battery being run through the transport mode on one of Lincad’s conditioners or chargers. When a battery reaches the 30% state of charge limit on a charge or discharge cycle, a status label is automatically printed, each label indicating the exact state of charge and providing other identifiable data for that particular battery. Through this approach, batteries can be demonstrated to be safe to fly and traceability provided, allowing those in the supply chain, the end user and third parties to have confidence that compliance has been achieved.

BLOCS can be integrated with up to 32 conditioners or chargers at the same time. This reduces overall system costs, speeds up processing times and streamlines logistics. Using Lincad’s six channel Armada conditioner, as many as 192 batteries can be processed simultaneously. The system comes as a factory add-on option and its automated, plugand-play approach requires no external input from the end user following set up. Different conditioner and charger types can be attached simultaneously to offer maximum flexibility and convenience.

Lincad has worked predominantly in the military sector since it was founded over 35 years ago. Key customers include the UK Ministry of Defence and defence prime contractors, along with other armed forces around the world, including those from NATO and the Five Eyes alliance. For long-term storage of lithium-ion batteries, a state of charge of 50% is generally recommended.

PROTECT CRFS on target – Latest 3D Geolocation technology pinpoints airborne platforms CRFS, a global leader in RF spectrum monitoring, intelligence, and geolocation solutions, has completed a new phase of research and development into real-time passive 3DTDOA geolocation techniques to pinpoint airborne platforms over many hundreds of kilometers.

Having an accurate airspace picture is critical for both civilian and military users. To understand how the new algorithms enhance accuracy, CRFS captured over 100,000 aircraft ADS-B transmissions across New York state using 4 RFeye receivers roughly 45miles (75km) apart. The RF transmissions were then geolocated using a three-dimensional Time Difference Of Arrival (3DTDOA) technique. To assess accuracy, the 3DTDOA geolocation results were compared to the decoded ADS-B GPS transmissions.

The results achieved within the network demonstrated a range accuracy of 16 meters (95% CL), roughly half a Boeing 747-8 tail span, and 70 meters (95% CL) altitude. At 60 miles (100 kilometres) outside the network, range accuracy was 72 meters (95% CL). To put that into context, at 60 miles (100 kilometers) outside the network, latitude longitude is accurate to within a fuselage length of a Boeing 747-8 intercontinental aircraft, traveling at speed.

The same data set was used to derive bearing accuracy at 100NM (165km). At this distance, the system produced range accuracy of 139 meters equivalent to a directional bearing accuracy of just 0.02° (95% CL), alongside elevation error of only 0.4° (95% CL).

It is based on a carbon ratchet system to reduce weight, and its preconnected cabling design allows it to be fitted without specialist tools and equipment for simple fit and removal in the field.

Tyron’s ATR-MPs will contribute to increased mobility and safety for the vehicle fleet, while also supporting simplified logistics in the field.

“As the ATR-MP is a multi-section runflat, it does not require any special tools or a hydraulic press to insert and remove the runflat when replacing the tyre, meaning it offers a huge advantage over single piece systems that require both of those things,” Simson said. “In fact, in many cases when a single piece runflat needs to be replaced following a tyre strike they have to be flown to another country where bases are equipped to handle the repair. simplified, tactile control panel with silent operation controls that allows the Operator to optimise the image quickly even whilst wearing gloves, along with the option of a remote control that can be mounted on the weapon. The set-up menu is simple and intuitive with a range of features and options that can be selected to tailor DRAGON-C12 to the mission profile.

DRAGON-C12 features an on-board shutter. The intelligent shutter will only calibrate (NUC) the system when needed, or on Operator demand if preferred. In both cases, there is no need to cover the objective lens to optimise the target scene, and risk losing eyes on the target. The shutter can also be disabled when tactical stealth is a must.

DRAGON-C12 is just one example of the new range of tactical thermal imagers for Military, Law Enforcement and Professional Operators being developed by Excelitas, with several variants available and planned to support different weapons and mission needs.

The target scene is controlled with intelligent algorithms and advanced image processing to ensure the target remains optimised under all scene conditions, including the optional use of colour to highlight and outline potential threats trying to remain concealed. There is nowhere left to hide.
