Arlington grew from the merger of two small towns, Arlington and Haller City, in 1903. The towns had traditionally been fierce rivals, but Arlington gained the upper hand as it was the site of the train depot. Originally a center of agriculture and timber harvesting, the area became more suburban in the late 20th century and developed a strong service economy, particularly in the aviation industry. There is an annual fine arts and crafts festival and nearby is the Pilchuck Glass School, a noted rural arts academy. The city is also known for its popular Arlington Fly-In at the airport each year. Every October, Arlington hosts a Viking Festival reflecting the Scandinavian heritage of many of its early settlers.
