Christine Cathie has become a nationally significant glass artist with the hallmark of a distinctive visual language of articulated, banded forms containing arrested motion and defined space.

Cathie bends, twists and alters the bands and fluid forms dramatically. There is a significant interplay between glass density and mass, between tone and the constituencies of colour. Organic (as if free-hand drawn) lines declare presence inside and out. The differing surfaces of each O-void are worked in multiple ways with the direct consequences of the passage of light becoming altered and constrained and released. Visual paradoxes are built, beguiling qualities revealed, and we witness flux and dissolve where the O-voids seem at once to recede and advance while also undergoing rapid and radical changes in shape due to a changed viewing position.

The works in Contour have a noticeably aspirational quality – they stand up, reach and strive. They also collectively present a metaphorical language which directly references the Central Otago landscape and its distinctive seasons.

CHRISTINE CATHIE

The integral nature of rhythm and motion is captured in Christine Cathie’s elegantly minimalist glass sculptures. Employing tapered edges and curvaceous silhouettes, Cathie essentially draws lines within space, exploiting the translucent nature of glass to establish a dialogue between light and shade, density and mass. Cathie’s most recent O-void series sees the forms striving upwards, defying gravity and the weight of their medium, poised as if ready to take flight.

“Over the last few years I have been exploring the O-voids, working with the immediacy of still warm wax sheets, twisted and turned to emphasize fluidity, lending a meditative nature to the smooth contours of the glass. In my mind’s eye I can see framed the intense colours of the Otago landscape with its golden hills, the ice blue of the rivers, the lush greens of the bush and autumn reds and oranges. I am interested in glass’s paradoxes – to get a sense of movement from a static form, using contrasts of matt and polished surfaces that let the light through and bring the glass to life with its complex optical abstractions.”

Born in Wellington, Cathie trained as an architectural designer and subsequently developed a career as a graphic designer. Attracted by the challenge of working in 3 dimensions, Cathie began to explore glass as a creative medium.

A finalist on seven occasions in the Ranamok Glass Prize (Australia) since 2002, Cathie has exhibited in Paris, Hong Kong, New York and Australia. In 2004 she was selected for the Southern Exposure exhibition at the Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, Denmark, and in 2005 she was included in the significant touring Glass Invitational NZ exhibition. Her work is held in private, public and corporate collections nationally and internationally, most notably the Museum of NZ Te Papa Tongarewa and in NZ embassies worldwide as part of the collection of the NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Christine Cathie’s lead crystal Ribbon also deals with movement and catches that moment in time when a dropped ribbon hits and starts to settle on the floor. Like a late 19th century stop gap photograph by Edouard Muybridge, Cathie records the ribbon’s subtle twisting and allows us to see beauty in movement not normally observable to the human eye”. (1)

“The striking presence of works in the foyer such as Brian Corr’s and Christine Cathie’s, were on my finalist list. At the heart of both these works glass was employed as a powerful sculptural material, balancing the physical and visual weight of the medium…meanwhile Cathie’s large O-void, a dark blue oval form made of cast lead crystal, acid etched and polished, appeared to be caught in a moment of suspended animation. It was like a large engine band, dramatic in size, calling for hands to explore the surfaces of smooth and matt glass.” (2)
