With a successful exhibition history thatextends back to the late 1950s,Stanley Palmer’s place in the historyof New Zealand artis assured. Palmer’s paintings parallel hislong-standing print-making practice;both mediacapturing the essence andmemories of the land.
After the Storm – Piopiotahi (2013)exhibits all the nuances of visual language viewers have cometoexpectfrom Palmer. The ramshacklebuildingswith their corrugated roofs are asmuchpartof the artist’s vernacular as are the views across the mountains and sea. He uses builtstructures - roads, trig points,sheds,fences – toprovide a pointupon which the eyes can settle. Their human scaleprevents the open,emptyvistas of landfrom overwhelming the viewer andserve as reminders of time’s passing.
Rather than the wilduntouched places of the country,Palmerdepicts farmlands,wherevestiges of native bush fringe the edges of bluffs andlonely cabbage trees cluster around a shearing shed. These remnants of forest combinewith the emptyoutbuildings and rundown fencelines tosuffuse Palmer’sworks with a wistful nostalgia for a half-rememberedsummer or familyholiday. This sweetmelancholyis further enhanced bya soft,jewel-like palette and the delicacyof the artist’s brushwork.
The suite of monoprints reveals the print-making skills Palmerhas honed over decades. Asingleprintis taken from a stainlesssteel plate upon which the image is painted in reverse; there is verylittle room for error and,conversely,a fair amountof chance involved in the final product. The clear colours and abstraction of form give these works a fresh immediacyand the hand of the artistcan be seen inthe subtle textures of the inks.
StanleyPalmerpaints a New Zealandlandscape redolentwithmemoryand his worksdraw on each viewer’s own recollections. These remembered cycles of time and tide are the artist’s subtle inducements to recognise ourselves in the bays, hillsand headlandshe portrays.

Stanley Palmer's rugged and beautiful landscapes are expressive, emotive and distinctively New Zealand. Using painting and printing techniques, he has developed a unique and personal style that captures the essence and colours of our natural coastlines, rural scenes and native flora.
"Stanley's Palmer's art over the past four decades has delved into ambiguous territories of memory. Increasingly, it configures as a deeply wrought, highly personal chart of Aotearoa New Zealand, mining the depths of his own recollections as well as tapping into historical memory and, beyond that, the geological past." (1)
“Often focusing on the coastline – the border across which the colonisers and the colonised first tentatively merged – Palmer’s work is imbued with a sense of loss, yearning and disappointment.” (2) Stanley Palmer’s works show a deep connection to the New Zealand landscape and speak of environmental issues.
Stanley Palmer has established himself as one of New Zealand’s most significant printmakers. A “method of printmaking that Stanley Palmer employs is one that he invented. It is a combination of engraving and lithography, using bamboo rather than metal as an etching plate. Engraving on a wooden surface is much easier, it can be done with tools rather than with acid, and requires less pressure to print. Less pressure allows more control of any ink applied directly to the plate and maintains the subtle texture of bamboo grain as an integral part of the design.”(3)
Stanley Palmer lives in Auckland and has worked as a fulltime artist since 1968. He began exhibiting in 1958 and has an art practice that covers both painting and printmaking processes including bamboo prints, woodcuts and monoprints. His works are part of public and private collections including Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand, Wellington, City Art Gallery, Auckland and The Dowse Art Museum, Wellington.
