MildENhall MUSEUM

Tales of the Unexpected Supernatural lore from around Mildenhall

WORDS: Pam Dowson Sponsored article - Mildenhall Museum. No federal endorsement of sponsor intended.

Britain is reputedly the most haunted country in the world, and in this sponsored article by the Mildenhall Museum, its historians detail accounts of ghosts from the local area. It’s pleasant to wander around the villages and lanes of Suffolk, but beware, you

20

may encounter more than you expect... there could be ghosts, fairies or witches laying in wait! If you are near Aspal Farm, in Beck Row and you feel a sudden rush of wind, listen out for the warning ‘Don’t fear me, fear what follows me’ from the lips of a

ghostly figure. You might be advised not to wait around to find out what is heading your way! BELOW: Track to Redneck Farm

The village of Icklingham, on the way to Bury St Edmunds, has more than one supernatural legend. If you look on the Ordnance Survey map for the area, you will see ‘Dead Man’s Grave’ marked. You can walk to it, if you are brave enough, but where did the name come from? The story is that a highwayman fell from his horse on that spot and died. Rather than have the bother of carrying him to the village for a Christian burial, he was

the Milestone Slip, next to the lane leading to Redneck Farm. She added that passing horses were liable to be snared by the enchanted music and dragged down into the fairies' parlour. West Stow is known today for its recreated Anglo-Saxon village, but there was, until fairly recent times, a derelict farm to the west of the village around which grew huge thorn trees. If you should dare to venture among the trees at midnight, you may hear the wailing cries of a dead woman, a young girl who had been abandoned by her lover!

Passing horses were liable to be snared by the enchanted music and dragged down into the fairies' parlour. buried on the spot. He was so incensed at this that he is said to haunt passers-by. Many years ago, Betty Petch lived in Icklingham. She was the local ‘wise woman’ who brewed potions to cure the sick, but she was also reputed to cast curses on those who crossed her path. If you walk near the parish church there, look for a gap in the hedge which is said to be a witch’s path – the route Betty,

sometimes in the form of a white rabbit, took to chase away her enemies. Follow the route with care, and keep an eye open for rabbits! You may have heard of the little village of Elveden, near Lakenheath. In this ‘Elf’s Den’, back in the 1800s, an elderly lady recalled having heard, as a child, fairy music coming from a 'magic dell' by the roadside there. It supposedly still exists, in a wood called

Rumour has it that many years ago three silver bells were buried in Undley Hall Farm, near Lakenheath, and that some time later a Frenchman came and told the farmer there that he had a plan showing where the bells were buried, asking permission to dig for them, but the farmer insisted that he should first be shown the plan. The Frenchman did not trust the farmer, so would not show him the plan, and returned to France; so the bells have never been found. If you go there, stop and listen – you never know, you may hear the muffled sound of bells! Find more information about the local stories and history at Mildenhallmuseum.co.uk
