The story of a small island The story of this small island began when, lush and uninhabited, unspoiled and undiscovered, Milaidhoo was a secret castaway island with white, sandy beaches set in a lagoon teeming with marine life and ringed with a flourishing coral reef. When the opportunity came to add accommodation for guests, the Maldivian family that owns Milaidhoo had a vision of an island resort where, if a sultan from the past were visiting, he would find natural island-inspired comfort that seemed familiar. In contrast to the concrete of modern constructions, local materials were used to create spacious villas and residences that could be opened up to allow for seamless outdoor living. To match the shape of the island and capture sea views, our Maldivian architect designed guest accommodation with curved, organic shapes. The custom-made furnishings and unique designs are Maldivian inspired, from the natural wooden floor to the thatched roof, all made by craftsmen specifically for Milaidhoo. In place of the traditional luxury hotel formula of excess, Milaidhoo comprises qualities that are rare in this modern world: simplicity, natural style, and respect for its surroundings. Space and outdoor living are key, interpreting local heritage in a contemporary style. In the Milaidhoo Ocean Residence guests discover an overwater paradise with spectacular views. Set at the very end of the lagoon jetty, this over-water residence has a separate living room and two bedrooms, each with a spacious en-suite bathroom. A dedicated personal butler is on call to arrange everything guests wish. This 564sqm thatched-roof Residence suspended on pillars over the ocean, has two large bedrooms with wonderful sea views. There is a gym concealed under the roof as a secret space for workouts, private yoga and meditation sessions while enjoying an inspiring view. Outside on the broad sundeck are a swing chair, sun loungers and a private freshwater infinity pool with steps down into the lagoon.

BA’THELI BY THE REEF RESTAURANT & LOUNGE Milaidhoo is home to the first restaurant in the Maldives that specialises in gourmet local island cuisine, featuring dishes inspired by the Maldivian Spice Route. Named after the ancient wooden sailing vessels that brought spices and knowledge of other countries to the islands, Ba’theli by the Reef is one of the few fine-dining restaurants in the world that encourages its diners to come barefoot. Ba’theli’s architecture reflects its heritage, built to resemble three boats that are supported by pillars so it appears to be floating by the reef in the lagoon. The story of Ba’theli boats began over 5,000 years ago when the Maldives was a key port of call for trading vessels sailing from Indonesia and India to Arabia with cargoes of cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, cloves, ginger and pepper. The Maldivian islanders bartered coconuts, sun-dried fish, cordage, cowrie shells and sails woven from coconut fibre for spices, rice, ceramics and silks. These locally-made cargo boats, or Ba’theli in the Maldivian language, collected these goods and sailed throughout the archipelago trading them, spreading knowledge about different lands, their customs and cuisine. The menu created by the chef at Ba’theli by the Reef features dishes that originated in the Maldives, adapted for a gourmet palate. As in traditional Maldivian dishes, cooking techniques and ingredients come from around the Indian Ocean, India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. The restaurant concept is part of the Milaidhoo ethos to offer guests a very Maldivian holiday with a real sense of island life; the dining experience is truly island inspired, based on the culture, tradition and history of this destination.

SHORELINE GRILL The beachfront Shoreline Grill is where guests find superb meats and freshly caught local fish and seafood, simply cooked and beautifully presented. Guests dine barefoot on the sand in a private beachfront pavilion, or inside for a fantastic view of the show kitchen. This exceptional culinary experience inspires guests, and they can even enjoy an evening at our Chef’s Table where chef designs a tailor-made menu, and cooks especially for them. Guests are also invited to arrange a pre-dinner wine tasting session in our wine room with our sommelier. This is barefoot informality at its best: easy, simple, no fuss.

OCEAN RESTAURANT Here’s the tropical breakfast guests dream of: sitting on the deck by the ocean as our team delivers wave after wave of treats to the table. Or helping yourself to a huge variety of elegantly presented culinary delights, hand-picked from all over the world, locally sourced where possible. For lunch and dinner, the style remains casually comfortable with international dishes, perfectly presented, from our à la carte menu. Here, the key words are fresh, flavourful and friendly.

COMPASS POOL BAR Compass is the place to chill out and fall in love with our infinity pool that overlooks the ocean. When hunger calls, we’re right here with light meals including gourmet pizzas from our wood-fired oven, bento boxes, fresh salads and sandwiches, and of course, a tempting drinks list with the freshest juices, infused waters, wines and cocktails. The fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down; the area transforms into a laid-back lounge offering aperitifs and afterdinner drinks as well as an impressive selection of cocktails.

IN VILLA DINING To us, in villa dining means the creation of a magical experience for our guests in the privacy of their own accommodation, 24 hours a day. The menu includes a carefully curated selection of dishes designed to please and satisfy a craving for something different; our chefs make it just right.

Guests don’t just go fishing, they join a Maldivian fisherman and learn how it’s done here. Guests don’t just go on an excursion; they let a Maldivian take them by the hand and guide them through our culture and history. Guests don’t just do a cooking class; they accept chef’s invitation to pick some local herbs with him and create a new dish together. Guests don’t just drink fine wines or spirits; they join our sommelier or bartender for a tasting class and see if they can concoct something good enough to feature on our drinks menu.

SLEEPING UNDER THE STARS While each of the bright and spacious beach villas and residences at Milaidhoo, are the epitome of luxury and comfort, one lucky couple a night can experience the

natural essence of the tropics by sleeping under the stars like castaways on an isolated sandbank.

The sandbank is transformed with the same comfortable

facilities of a Milaidhoo villa or residence, complete with

four-poster bed draped in muslin. A yacht for the castaway couple’s exclusive use with dressing room, shower, toilet and equipped with all amenities, is anchored by the

sandbank throughout the night. Candles and lanterns

enhance the moonlight and the only music is the wash of the waves on the sandbank’s shore.

The memorable night as a castaway couple at Milaidhoo’s sandbank begins with a short dolphin cruise at dusk on a

luxury yacht or a traditional Maldivian sailing boat with a butler offering champagne and canapés as the sun sets and dolphins leap. On landing on the sandbank, sun-

downer cocktails are served as a welcome drink. Then follows a four-course dinner especially created to the couple’s request and served by a butler.

The couple is invited to enjoy after-dinner drinks while the crew withdraw, leaving the castaways in romantic, star-lit

privacy. A luxurious, canopied king-size bed awaits as the

couple are embraced by the magic of the moon and stars on this isolated desert sandbank far from everywhere.

A mobile phone is provided to call the butler. Otherwise, the couple is left alone until waking in the morning. On

request, the resident Milaidhoo Yogi can visit to offer a

sunrise yoga session before the butler arrives to present a freshly prepared breakfast served on the sandbank.

THE OCEAN OCEAN STORIES AQUATIC CENTRE While the beauty of the Maldives is breath-taking, what can be found below the surface is even more moving. Our team of expert divers know the best dive sites in the atoll and welcome everyone, from novices making their first dive to experts logging their hundredth. At Milaidhoo we have a five-star PADI dive centre that offers house reef diving, boat diving, private diving, night diving, fluo night dives, Manta Ray diving and nitrox. PADI Five Star Dive Resorts are committed to providing quality diver training and continuing education programmes that include dive experiences and environmental awareness. With the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the world-famous Hanifaru Bay at our shores, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the incredible marine wildlife from the resident marine biologist. Here guests may discover what makes Whale Sharks tick, why Manta Rays dance and what makes Dolphins smile, as well as join in our identification and conservation practices. We offer a ‘Be a Marine Biologist’ programme where the curious can shadow our biologist and learn more about what a marine biologist does.

Various non-motorised watersports are on offer, including conventional and transparent kayaks, windsurfers, catamarans, stand up paddle boards (SUPs) and Zayaks (complimentary for our guests). Snorkelling equipment can be borrowed free of charge.

HANIFARU BAY & UNDERWATER STORIES Being a nation that is 99 percent ocean, the Maldives has incredibly diverse aquatic wildlife; the beauty and richness of this marine life is outstanding. The waters of the archipelago are home to a vast array of sea creatures, ranging from 200 species of coral to over 2,000 species of fish, including colourful reef fish and larger pelagic fish, such as tuna, sharks, and rays. You will also find sea turtles, cetaceans like dolphins, whales and porpoises, octopuses, squids, giant clams, crabs, lobsters, sea cucumbers and sea anemones. Milaidhoo’s house reef hosts a beautiful variety of marine life, which is why going out for a snorkel is a favourite activity for our guests. One can see numerous species of colourful reef fish such as surgeon fish, butterfly fish, parrot fish, angel fish and the popular clown fish swimming between the tentacles of sea anemones.uests will be able to observe seabed-dwelling creatures like sea cucumber, star fish and sea urchins. They may also find some moray eels, octopuses and lobsters hiding in the reef. Even one of our resident Hawksbill sea turtles or some eagle rays can be sighted swimming around the island.

For a more adventurous experience, guests can join our night snorkelling excursion. Night snorkelling is like entering a different universe, where the vibrant and colourful life animating the reef during daytime is replaced by nocturnal and cryptic reef-dwelling creatures. Equipped with torches, escorted divers visit the reef and search for night creatures, such as lion fish, hunting moray eels, squids, octopuses, feather sea stars, hermit crabs, sting rays and nurse sharks. A popular attraction in Baa Atoll for sea life lovers is Hanifaru Bay. This is a marine protected area within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in which Manta Rays and sometimes Whale Sharks congregate to feed on plankton during the Southwest Monsoon, which lasts from May to November. During this period, the currents and winds bring lots of zooplankton to the eastern part of Baa Atoll. A high concentration of this plankton gets trapped in Hanifaru Bay because of the funnel-like shape of its reef. All this food attracts schools of Mantas, especially at high tide around the time of the full moon and the new moon, because the currents are stronger then. These tides induce more plankton to drift into the bay.

EXCURSIONS AND ADVENTURES Guests can sail away to their own private deserted sandbank where a feast awaits, cruise with dolphins at sunset with champagne and canapés on board one of our luxury craft or just set sail under the starry night skies and be at one with the universe. This ocean country stocked with plentiful fish, calling to everyone with the soul of a fisherman. Our big game fishing boat can take guests out to the high seas looking for wahoo, sailfish, swordfish, giant trevally or marlin for our catch and release programme. Alternatively, our guides show and teach the local way to fish by hand with pole and line from a traditional Maldivian fishing boat.

SUSTAINABLE MILAIDHOO With our location in the declared marine sanctuary of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, conservation of our precious environment is one of our guiding principles. We are participants in the Green Globe certification process. This sets strict standards, not just in our environmental actions, but also in ethical business behaviour, fair trade and compliance with international best practices and standards.

WHAT WE'RE DOING The protection of our fragile environment is at the forefront of everything we do. Here’s an overview of what is important to us all on Milaidhoo. We have a state-of-the-art Water and Sewage Treatment Plant ensuring no contaminants enter the ocean and making best practical re-use of grey water. We use accredited eco-friendly chemicals in our laundry and cleaning. We regret that we are unable to offer dry cleaning services due to the harsh nature of the chemicals involved An in-depth environmental impact assessment report was carried out before we began building the resort. All guidelines set out in that report have been carefully observed. We have a coral regeneration programme in place. Our guests can support this by ‘adopting’ a reef of their own, planting it and watching it grow over the years. We support and work with local marine charities such as The Manta Trust and Manta Matcher. We make it our responsibility to ensure that each member of our Milaidhoo Family understands the importance of conservation and takes a pledge to personally protect the environment. We comply with all local environmental laws, standards and regulations. These are kept updated regularly and followed correctly. With over 200 family members with a diverse background of different nationalities, majority Maldivian, we encourage and support the career development of each member.

WHO WE WORK WITH: GREEN FINS Ocean Stories Aquatic Centre at Milaidhoo is a member of Green Fins. Our marine biologist and the team are dedicated to the care and the protection of marine life and participate in implementing environmental initiatives and educational programmes. Green Fins is an initiative of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the Reef-World Foundation. It is paving the way to unite politics and marine conservation efforts to ensure the sustainability of popular destinations around the world for diving and snorkelling. Green Fins is a unique approach to conservation designed around threats to coral reef biodiversity. Divers and snorkellers choosing dive and snorkel operators who are Green Fins members can be assured that members are working to reduce threats to the marine environment.

OLIVE RIDLEY TURTLE PROGRAMME

MILAIDHOO TURTLE IDENTIFICATION PROGRAMME

We’re actively involved in providing data about the Olive Ridley Turtle for the charity organisation, Olive Ridley Project, based in the UK.

There are seven species of sea turtle worldwide, and five of them can be found in the Maldives, with the Hawksbill Turtle and the Green Turtle being the most commonly seen species. By taking pictures of a turtle’s head we can identify which turtle has been seen and add it to our Milaidhoo Turtle Database.

MANTA TRUST AND MALDIVES MANTA RAY PROJECT Manta Rays are among the most charismatic creatures living in our oceans and are now endangered. With the largest brain of all fish species, their intelligence and curiosity make encounters with these creatures a truly amazing experience. The Manta Trust was founded to learn more about the lifecycle, population dynamics and habitat of the Maldives Manta population, while also working with the government, tourists, local communities and tour operators to create greater awareness and protection for these graceful Rays and their habitat.

SHARK WATCH We also participate in ‘Shark Watch’ to observe the number of sharks in our waters. This is in conjunction with the Darwin Reef Fish Project of the Marine Research Centre at the Ministry of Fisheries of the Maldives.

We collect data for the Manta Trust organisation by taking pictures of the distinctive spot patterns on the bellies of Manta Rays which, like fingerprints for humans, are unique to each animal. All pictures are uploaded to the Manta Trust Database creating a record of Manta sightings and a count of how many there are in the Maldives. The population of Manta Rays in the Maldives is currently around 5,000.
