Those battling it know it all to well and those supporting patients know they would do anything to make things just a little bit easier for their loved ones fighting the toughest fight of their lives. This is never more true than when it’s friends and family of children waging the war against pediatric cancers. These tiny warriors are some of the bravest on the battlefront. They face the same, sometimes scary, side effects of treatment as adult patients, including often losing their hair. This is where you, and your head, come in. 2019 Achievement

Luncheon Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” The guiding principle of service above self is at the core of everything that Cherry Creek Valley Rotary of Parker does. Charted in June 2006, CCV Rotary is a part of a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad.

Each year, Rotary brings the community together to recognize others who have made it their mission to serve others and recognize these extraordinary individuals at the Achievement Luncheon. This event highlights men, women and non-profit organizations who live and/or work in Douglas County that have made a difference in the lives of others in many ways. Their exemplary volunteer work and hearts of service will be recognized during the luncheon. This year’s event will feature a keynote speech by U.S.A. Paralympic Triathlete, Paralympic Gold Medalist, and Two Time World Champion Alyssa Seely. Allysa is a professional athlete and commanding inspirational speaker who leaves audiences wanting to better themselves, their community and the world. Diagnosed at the age of 20 with Chiari 2 Malformation, Basilar Invagination and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, she also suffered a traumatic brain injury and an incomplete spinal cord injury due to delays in diagnosis and treatments. Although it wasn’t likely she’d ever walk again without assistance, after battling months of intensive rehabilitation, Allysa competed with the Arizona 9

State University Sun Devils at Collegiate National Championships. Her battle continued when, three years later, she endured the amputation of her left leg below the knee. Determined to realize her dreams, seven weeks after the amputation, Allysa swam 1.2 miles as part of a relay team for a local ironman event. Three months after the amputation she ran a 5k and a few months after that she crossed the line of her first triathlon as an amputee. In 2016 she realized another dream as she became the first Paralympic Gold Medalist in Triathlon. She continues to compete in events around the world. Her career highlights include: - 2016 Paralympic Gold Medalist - Three Time (2015, 2016, 2018) World Champion - 2016 CanAm Continental Champion - 2012 World Championships Bronze Medalist - 2016 Two Sport Paralympic Team Member (Triathlon and Track) - 2015 Para PanAmerican Team Member Following what is sure to be an incredibly moving speech, recognition will be warded in several categories of achievement to those in our community whose actions are the catalyst for incredible change; both throughout our community and, in some case, across the globe. The CCV Rotary will honor Achievement in Leadership, Achievement as a Non-Profit Organization, Achievement in Service to Others: Local Service and International Service, Achievement in Mentoring, Achievement as an Unsung Heroine/Hero, and the Young Woman/ Young Man of Achievement. Parker’s Secret Closet Sometimes, it’s hard to keep a secret. In the case of Parker’s Secret Closet, it’s something worth sharing. Since its inception, Parker’s Secret Closet’s goal has remained the same, providing free formal-wear for young adults so they may attend important events without spending a ton of money. They really strive to focus on the reduce/recycle/ reuse mindset. Parker’s Secret Closet will take your gently used dresses, shoes, and accessories and give them out to someone else who will love them as much as you did. Meanwhile, you get the chance to look through the collection and find a “new-to-you” outfit, completely free of charge! Cocktail dresses worn once or twice, bridesmaid or other special event wear that is just collecting dust in your closet can be given new life and enjoy another night out after being donated to Parker’s Secret Closet. Along with gowns, they are now collecting menswear for homecoming and prom. Suits, sports coats, tuxedos, slacks, and 11

anything else you think may help a young man look sharp on his big night out is appreciated. Parker’s Secret Closet is alway in need of donations, if you would like more information on donating, please go to www.parkersecretcloset.org/donations. None of the amazing things happening at Parker’s Secret Closet would be possible without the amazing efforts of the volunteers. There are numerous ways to get involved, whether it’s helping to get the shop ready, assisting guests, or being a part of our birthday bash and fashion show, they NEED your help. The community has been amazing in the past and Parker’s Secret Closet is excited to work with old friends and make new ones. Their volunteer calendar is up to date, to see open time slots, go to

www.parkersecretcloset.org/calender. It is no longer a requirement that volunteers be out of high school to assist guests during our pop-ups, or appointments and Parker’s Secret Closet can sign off on community service hours for school.

Audrey Hepburn, who wore more than her fair share of beautiful gowns, once said, “As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.” Take a page from one of the most glamorous women of all time, with one of the biggest hearts and consider donating your time or gently used glamorous items to Parker’s Secret Closet and help other feels like a movie star at their next special event. A Round of Applause for our High School Musicals If you’ve ever caught a performance at the PACE Center or Schoolhouse Theatre, you know that the performances we can see, right here in Parker, are full of amazingly talented actors, singers and dancers. Many of these performances include talent right out of our community, many from the amazing pool of talent from our local high schools. This month and next, you can have a front row seat to this incredible talent by attending one (or more) of the performances proudly presented by Chaparral, Legend, Lutheran and Ponderosa High School’s Theatre Departments.

Chaparral Theatre’s adaptation of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels runs through March 2nd. Based on the 1988 film, this romp takes us to the French Rivera, where mischief and a bit of mayhem follow. March 1st through March 9th, Legend High School will be alive with “The Sound of Music” at Legend High School (22219 Hilltop Road.) The cast, crew and orchestra will transport you high atop those infamous hills in the Alps with the beloved songs that will no doubt have you humming along. Performances will be March 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th and 9th at 7pm and March 2nd 2pm. With this production of “Beauty and the Beast” they will no doubt add another stellar performance to their list of successes. The musical is an original story featuring the beloved, wickedly funny characters we know and love. Wednesday Addams is all grown up and has fallen in love with a man from a respectable family, who has never met Wednesday’s parents! After confiding in her father, Gomez Addams must keep a secret from his wife Morticia, but everything will change on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and her parents! Something truly amazing is coming to Parker… Miss Amazing. Colorado joined Miss Amazing, Inc. two years ago with just 22 participants. In its second year, Colorado Miss Amazing more than doubled their participants to 51 last year. The hope is that this year’s event brings in even more participants. Colorado Miss Amazing may sound like another pageant; it’s so much more than another pageant. Colorado Miss Amazing provides opportunities for girls and women with disabilities to build confidence and self esteem in a very supportive environment. Miss Amazing is comprised of a community of people that invests in the strengths of girls and women with disabilities, because no matter any young women’s abilities or challenges, she can do great things. Colorado is one of 30 states across the country that host Miss Amazing events where thousands of volunteers have come forward to celebrate diversity and true girl power. To date, 1,700 girls and women have benefited from Miss Amazing programs. Miss Amazing events provide a public platform 17

for girls and women with disabilities to define themselves on their own terms and help to dispel stereotypes. The sisterhood develops friendships and provides the opportunity for participants to test their own boundaries and take on new challenges. Colorado Miss Amazing kicks off on Friday, March 29th, at the Holiday Inn on Cottonwood Drive, which has become the Official Colorado Miss Amazing Hotel. Rehearsals and registration will be followed by orientation and then it’s time for the participants to have some serious fun all while preparing for day two’s events. The evening will end with a pajama dance party with live entertainment from Shelvis and the Roustabouts. Day Two will be held at the PACE Center and starts off with the talent showcase. After a 2 hour break for hair and makeup and a dinner for participants and their buddies, the final show will commence at 6pm. There will be incredible surprises, awards and much, much more. Over 350 people attended last year’s event, and more than 30 businesses and organizations have signed on as sponsors

for the Colorado Miss Amazing event; which stands to reason because with an event this special and inspiring, who wouldn’t want to be a part of it? In addition to the astounding things this program is doing for all the girls and women who participate, it’s allowing those same participants to give back to the community. Participants pay a small fee to be a part of Colorado Miss Amazing; 5 cans of food. To date, over 450 cans of food have been donated to local food banks by the representatives of Colorado Miss Amazing. Something this special should be shared with everyone. Whether you might be interested in this event as a participant, a volunteer, or a sponsor, it is bound to leave a lasting mark on your heart. Jim Bell recently acquired this charming local pub and he is bringing some fun ideas to this neighborhood bar. Celtic House Pub opened in 2001 and Jim took over just weeks ago. There is a bit of Irish pride and some great character and charm that you must check out. A stunning 100 plus year old bar is the first thing you will notice as you walk in. It’s worth coming in just to view the beautiful antique wood workmanship. Once you are settled in, you can peruse the long list of beers and spirits. The experienced staff will give you some recommendations if you feel overwhelmed. There is a great list of domestic, craft and import bottle beers to pick from. Seventeen varieties of beer on tap ranging from a classic 20oz Guinness to various regional selections.
