COVID has parents and teachers stressing about what will happen in August when schools reopen. DCSD is beginning to make plans for how to reopen with an emphasis on health and safety.
The Coffee Cabin hosted another DC Law Enforcement Appreciation and prayer event. The community turned out in support after the Coffee Cabin had been previously vandalized.
Community Service 2020 has brought some difficult trials for us all. But it has also inspired many to reach out and serve. Community service projects have been held and have assisted countless individuals to get through this downturn. One such young woman is Mikaela Fischer. It was an emotional conversation with a new, frightened local business owner that prompted the launch of the Parker Showcase passport. With the uncertainty of the flailing economy, and the onset of newer restrictions caused by the pandemic, Rex and Kristin Grayner realized that focusing on helping others was an answer to their own personal concerns. Rex and Kristin decided they wanted to do something to help their neighbors and the community. They came up with an idea to give residents (otherwise unable to travel), a "passport" to experience local restaurants. They didn't want it to be just another coupon book that gets discarded; there were already too many of those hanging around. They really wanted to make a difference. Many local restaurants were approached and ultimately 17 were included in the first printing of the booklet. None of the establishments paid anything to be included. With booklets now printed and distributed to participating restaurants, the online store was also opened and sales took off. 10 SEARCHPARKER | AUGUST 2020
Parker Showcase became a great success early on, as both restaurants and residents were eager to be a part of this great endeavor. The savings of the booklet was almost secondary; the thrill of being involved and pulling together as a community was the primary rush. Rex and Kristin then decided to take things up a notch. Since only a small percentage of the local restaurants were benefitting from the booklet, Grayners decided to expand the project's impact. They took 100% of the profits from the sale of the booklet and bought gift cards to other local places. They distributed those gift cards to the public freeof-charge. Last I spoke with the Grayners, many surrounding communities have reached out to them to launch a Showcase passport in their towns. In these uncertain and seemingly downtrodden times, it is great to hear of wonderful people reaching out to do good. There are good stories out there, and good people like the Grayners are making them come to life.

Whether students return to classrooms or virtual learning persists, there will be a new look and feel to school. But how long will it last? by AMBER TUELLER

ack to school is a common phrase that brings traditional feelings and images to mind - families going school shopping, kids organizing backpacks, and school open houses bring a feeling of new beginning and excitement. Students are returning to full-time learning and seeing classmates after the summer break. Summer is coming to a close and the crisp fall air will soon be here. Going back to school this year will be very different. With so many unknowns because of the COVID-19 crisis, school districts are fielding a lot of questions and are having to put a variety of new policies in place. They have consulted with the Tri-County Health Department, as well as other health organizations. After feedback from a community survey and input from a special task force made up of educators, community members, health care professionals, students, and parents, the district has put together a plan of action for the 2020-2021 school year. Douglas County School District is offering an option for families that are not comfortable with in-person learning to engage in remote learning from home. Many students will also be going back to in-person learning with a variety of restrictions. School start dates have been postponed to allow teachers extra time to prepare for changes. Douglas County School District has a comprehensive webpage answering frequently asked questions to help get a feel for how things will be handled and the restrictions that are required at this time.
