For the last 3 decades, the Recreation Center in Castle Rock has been an ideal spot for Castle Rock residents to gather, socialize, get a great work out in, and watch their kids play sports. Traditionally, pearls are the gift to give on one’s 30th anniversary. Well, forget that! To mark this monumental milestone, Castle Rock is going to back to the eighties and the entire Castle Rock community is invited to join the celebration. So fire up those leg warmers and straighten up those shoulder pads, this celebration is about to get totally tubular! On Thursday, October 11th, beginning at 5:30pm, come dressed in your 80’s best for this absolutely FREE family-friendly event to celebrate the Castle Rock Recreation Center turning 30. Prizes will be awarded for best dressed familes, so bust out that neon, Velcro up those Reeboks and layer those bangles on your arm to be a contender for, like, totally best dressed! In addition to the throw-back wardrobe choices, there will be plenty of 80’s themed activities to try out, like arcade games and pinball, 7

and you can help yourself to free hot dogs and drinks! Additional food will be available to purchase as well. You can work out to work off those calories at some rad 80’s themed aerobics demo classes. There will be iconic 80’s icon impersonators mingling at the party as well as an LED music video wall and Colorado Movie Cars will be cruisin’ over with some of their 80s iconic cars. If that weren’t enough, get ready to do your best “Truffle Shuffle” because “Goonies Never Say Die!” Bring your swimsuit and towel and enjoy this 80’s cult movie classic by the leisure pool. Craft Show Extraordinaire At no other time in a person’s life is there as much isolation as during their senior years, as many may be living alone for the first time. Simultaneously, at no other time in a person’s life do they have as much free time as during their senior years; after time spent raising families and working in demanding careers come to an end, many retirees are left wondering, what’s next? The Castle Rock Senior Activity Center has the answer to that question; they exist to bring seniors together. The Center wants to ensure that people are neither isolated nor idle. They bring seniors together, creating lifelong bonds, and providing outlets for their talents and interests, helping them develop new interests along the way. The face of today’s senior living is changing, and the Castle Rock Senior Activity Center strives to provide programming to meet those ever-changing, diverse needs. The stereotypical scene of a senior sitting back in their rocking chair, passing the time, no longer exists. Today’s seniors want to be enjoying their Colorado retirement doing things like golfing, whitewater rafting, learning a new skill or hobby or may want to give back 9

by volunteering. Some seniors may find themselves in need of hot meal programs because cooking isn’t something they want to do anymore, may desire some low impact exercise programs or just want to visit about what’s going on in the world with their friends. Some may have given up driving and are in need of transportation services. All of these activities, services and much more can be found at the Castle Rock Senior Activity Center. They now boast over 1000 members enjoying, on average, 150 activities a month offered through the Center! A fantastic way to support the incredibly important job the Center does is to plan on attending the biggest craft event in the Castle Rock area. Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 3rd, for the 26th Annual Castle Rock Craft Show Extraordinaire at the Douglas County Events Center at the Fairgrounds in Castle Rock. This annual holiday shopping season kick off features 150+ vendors selling unique and handmade items, plus door prizes, silent auction, wreath auction, “Grandma’s Attic,” “Grandma’s Kitchen” and much more. You’ll be sure to find a little something for everyone on your shopping
list. The best part about this incredible shopping event is that proceeds from the 26th Annual Craft Show directly benefit local senior citizens through the Castle Rock Senior Activity Center. Nearly 50 years ago, a small group of people started a small Senior Center in Castle Rock. That has since evolved into The Castle Rock Senior Center, a nonprofit organization working to improve the quality of life of our senior residents. This area has no shortage of opportunities to participate in races through the beautiful trails and spaces right in our own backyards. Very few also the opportunity to allow the participants to give back to those who have given so much. On Saturday, October 27th, the Douglas County Veterans Monument Foundation is extremely proud to present VetFest, a 5K/10K race and Street Party in the heart of downtown Castle Rock in Festival Park. Last year, the first VetFest race was a such a huge success, organizers decided to make this year’s event even better, and have added the Street Party, which will carry on throughout the day. The racers will get their start in the 5 & 10K events at 10am. For those runners who are active duty military, veterans or first responders, be sure to use promo code SERVE to save $5 on your registration. Active and veteran military are also encouraged to join the Armed Forces Run Off and 11

select “Join an Existing Team” at registration. Choose your branch and which comes out on top on race day! Awards for the top three male and female finishers will also be announced t the finish line. Registration for the 5K is $35 and $40 for the 10K, if racers sign up before October 26th. If you miss the chance to register early, you can still sign up on race day for just $5 more. Best part is that all proceeds will go directly to local veterans in need. With the Veterans Monument completed, the Foundation goal is to be a valuable resource that directly supports our hometown heroes, our local veterans. Currently, they are accepting applications for their new Veterans Assistance Grant Program. This program is designed to assist in ADA home modifications, funeral expenses, service dogs and filling the void where any other service gap exists.
The new addition of the Street Party, which everyone is invited to attend, whether or not they choose to participate in the race, will be a great way to spend a Saturday. The VetFest Street Party will have artist booths, food trucks and live music from Sarah P and the Dirty Logger. Additionally, Street Party goers can enjoy all that’s offered from local breweries in the beer tents; official beer vendors include 105 West Brewing Company, Burly Brewing Company & Rockyard Brewing Company. Whether you’re planning on finishing that 5 or 10K or you’re just there for the party, come out to Festival Park later this month for the 2nd Annual VetFest and have a lot of fun, to do a lot of good, for our local veterans. A Beautiful Work In Progress By: Mirna Valerio
This is a non-fiction book about Mirna Valerio. What you would picture if I told you the author is an avid longdistance runner? I bet that the picture in your mind does not match what the author looks like. Mirna is a plus size woman and does not have the typical svelte runner’s body. She is often incorrectly labeled and judged by society. However, she has logged some serious miles in her running shoes. This memoir takes us on her journey from an out of shape teen that a doctor labeled obese, to her first attempts at running, and then her journey to become an ultramarathoner. BECKY: I don’t read non-fiction
very often but this book was highly recommended and I have seen Mirna’s picture in ads so I had to check this out. I must post a warning that she uses some colorful language. It is somewhat often and might offend some readers. You don’t have to be an avid runner to enjoy this story. It was inspiring to hear her journey and how she embraces her large stature. She didn’t let anything get in her way once she committed to a running challenge. Pam, I didn’t realize until I started reading but Mirna is a model and ambassador for Skirt Sports, a company you recently became an ambassador for. Were you already familiar with her and her journey?
PAM: I have been following Mirna’s
story and journey recently. She is very inspirational as a runner and as a Skirt Sports ambassador. As I have been struggling with injuries and health issues, which have derailed some recent goals, I felt very connected to her story. She speaks very honestly about challenges, inspiration, and successes. This helped me put my struggles into perspective! Did you find her story interesting?
BECKY: Nonfiction can be
frustrating because the story often jumps around instead of following a timeline. That was challenging in this story and I felt lost a few times but my book has about a dozen postit-notes sticking out because she has some really inspirational thoughts and quotes. What inspires me the most is that she is plus size and feels 100% confident! I wish that more women, including myself, felt that beautiful with our imperfections. Have you looked at her blog or facebook page?

PAM: I have checked out her facebook page followed her as she prepared for a race recently. I was fortunate to hear her speak recently at a retreat in Boulder. She was very inspirational and delivered a great message to a room of women that were all shapes, sizes, and abilities. I completely agree with you about women following her lead and loving ourselves where we are. I love that she is always focused on becoming healthier, not for appearance, but for quality and longevity of life. I struggle with self confidence and body image issues, so this book was a welcome message. What did you think about her stories of the world of ultra running? Isn’t it amazing? BECKY: We should define ultra
running for those that are not familiar with this growing sport. It is any distance beyond 26.2 miles, which is a marathon. I am a reluctant runner and can’t imagine running a full marathon let alone a 50K. Yet, her stories inspire me to try something that is beyond what I would normally accomplish. As she wrote, I felt that if she could do it, then why couldn’t I? She commits to a race and then trains like a madwoman. I am amazed and astonished by those that participate in these races! Do you think that you have to enjoy running to like this memoir?
PAM: I think anyone could relate to this memoir because of the inspirational message. We could apply her persistence to any goal in our lives. Mirna is also a teacher and was working at a boarding school while writing her memoirs. It can be extremely challenging to fit in training with work, family, and day to day commitments. As she trained on and around the grounds of the school, do you think she was an inspiration to her students?

BEKCY: I’m sure that she was an
inspiration to both the students, and staff of the school. About halfway through the book she includes a few letters from previous students that mention the impact she had on their lives. That’s amazing! Pam, I’ve never mentioned it but you inspire me with your desire to compete in a 50K. While I’m plugging along on the treadmill, completing less than a 5k, I often think about your commitment to training and it keeps me going. Mirna mentions that training can take over your life. She would wake up at 5:00am to start training and often do a second workout in the evening. Do you agree that fitting in the necessary training to be successful consumes your schedule?
PAM: That is so nice, Becky! Your support means a lot to me! I do agree that training can take over your life. Before suffering an injury during training earlier this year, I was also running twice a day to try to get enough miles in around my schedule. I typically get up at 4:15 am to get my workout done before heading into work. Although this sounds extreme to some, it allows me to stick to a schedule and not have training derailed on a busy day. This schedule also allows me to be available for after school sports/activities. I look forward to continuing to follow Mirna’s adventures and enjoy the inspiration she brings!
