adrenal chemical responsible for regulating appetite and cravings for carbohydrates.

It seems everyone in Colorado has a dog. Maybe there's a reason why.

Research has found that having a four-legged companion like a dog can lower your risk of heart disease.

Search Parker Staff Study excerpts from Jane Weaver article, 2004

According to a Swedish study, individuals living alone who own a dog noticed a significantly reduced risk of suffering from cardiovascular-related death by 36%, while dog owners in a multi-person household saw a decreased risk of cardiovascular death by 15%. Why does Spot make us feel better?

Those big brown eyes gazing at you with adoration. The wet nose nudging bare feet in the early morning. That tireless wagging tail that symbolizes pure joy in your presence. We know that dogs are dedicated companions that offer unquestioning attachment and acceptance. But it's more than that. Numerous studies have shown that dogs -- one of the earliest domesticated animals -- can help lower blood pressure, ease the loneliness of the elderly in nursing homes, and help children overcome allergies. There are even studies suggesting the hormonal changes that occur when humans and dogs interact could help people cope with depression and certain stress-related disorders. Preliminary results from a study show that a few minutes of stroking our pet dog prompts a release of a number of "feel good" hormones in humans, including serotonin, prolactin and oxytocin. In addition, petting our pooches results in decreased levels of the primary stress hormone cortisol, the

Therapy dogs have been used to visit nursing homes, calm traumatized children and help ease pain in people undergoing physical rehabilitation, but the field of animal-assisted therapy is still in its infancy. Researchers are trying to determine which types of people would best benefit from being with pet animals and how often they need to interact with them to get results. Scientists have found that 15 minutes of quietly stroking a dog caused hormonal changes that are beneficial to both the dog and the human. Another important factor in preventing heart disease is exercise, and dog owners generally get more physical activity than their canine-less counterparts. In another study, 50 dog owners and 50 non-dog owners over the age of 18 sat in a quiet room for 15 to 39 minutes with their own dog, a friendly but strange dog, and a robotic dog. The robotic dog was included because electronic pooches, such as Sony's AIBO, are being studied as a possible resource for the elderly who can't look after a live animal.

FEBRUARY 2022 9

Each session involved calm stroking or petting. Researchers checked blood samples of both the humans and dogs at the beginning of each session and monitored their blood pressure every five minutes. The dogs' blood pressure dropped as soon as they were petted. The humans' blood pressure dropped by approximately 10 percent about 15 to 30 minutes after they began petting the animal, at which point blood was again drawn. The study found that serotonin levels increased when interacting with the human's own dog, but not with the unfamiliar animal. And serotonin actually decreased when interacting with the robotic dog. Not just learned behavior In other words, the warm feeling we get from our dogs and other pets isn't just a learned behavior, but something that's hard-wired into humans so that the presence of animals can help us stay well and even recover from illnesses. It's a theory that's been gaining notable scientific support for some time: • In 1995, Erika Friedman at the University of Maryland Hospital conducted a study involving 392 people, which found that heart attack patients with dogs were eight times more likely to be alive a year later than people without dogs. • In 1999, the State University of New York at Buffalo conducted a study involving 24 stock brokers taking medication for high blood pressure. The researchers found that adding a dog or cat to the stock brokers' lives helped stabilize and reduce their stress levels. • In 1999, Swedish researchers reported that children exposed to pets during the first year of life had fewer allergies and less asthma. 10 SEARCHCASTLEROCK

• Recently, separate studies reported that walking a dog contributed to a person's weight loss and that dog walking can be a catalyst for social interaction with other people, a benefit that can help improve our sense of well-being -- or even help us meet a future spouse. Treat your best friend Since they do so much for us, it's only fair that we pamper our "best friends." Camp Bow Wow in Parker is an oasis paradise for your pooch. Lonely Hearts Club Not all dating experiences have a "happily-ever-after" ending Stories as told to Search Parker Staff

12 SEARCHCASTLEROCK

Getting to know someone romantically can leave you feeling… drained. If you’ve ever felt like love is a battlefield, have no fear we’ve all been there. Sometimes bad dates happen to good people. Enjoy a few romantic flops from our favorite people. You’re welcome, and no, we’re not sorry for sharing.

"When I was in 3rd grade I had a playground boyfriend named Ray. This relationship lasted just a few weeks without us even holding hands. I was on track break (I attended a year-round school) and was trying not to be late to my after-school art club class. As I was approaching the school my friend, Jamie, came up to me and was trying to tell me something. In a panic I walked faster, not really listening in fear of being late to my art class.

While standing with only his face poking through the classroom door he blurted out as fast as he could, 'I NEED TO TELL HEATHER THAT RAY DOESN’T WANT TO BE HER BOYFRIEND ANYMORE!' and then slammed the door shut. This was announced to all who were in the classroom, making it super awkward." - Heather got over the embarrassment of that moment and went on to marry another flame she met at school.

Shortly after the teacher took account of who was in class that day, Jamie poked his head in the room and then closed the door. After doing this several times, my art teacher, confused like the rest of us, turned and asked, 'Jamie, do you need something?'

"When I was a sophomore, a new high schooler, Emily, was the first girl to catch my attention. I remember feeling lucky to have a couple classes with her that year. We became 'friends' because of the interaction in a science and English class specifically. She had a way of being kind and engaged in a conversation yet just aloof enough to remain alluring. She was a soccer player with all of the physical attributes that come with that athletic endeavor. I was so disappointed when I realized she was dating someone. Not just someone, but a fairly infamous skater, known as a leader amongst the group that would hang at the skaters' corner and smoke outside. I, on the other hand, was not quite the bad boy type that she was apparently interested in. We continued to be friends throughout that year and then summer came. Imagine the excitement when I saw her again the next school year and heard she was not dating her previous boyfriend. With the homecoming dance coming up, I quickly worked up the courage and asked her. Instead of using one of the cliche, funny methods to ask, I tried to be and act like a bad boy: just roses and and asking in person. It seemed to go over well. During classes leading up to the dance she seemed even more engaged and we even went to lunch a couple times before the dance. Things seemed to be going in the right direction. The day of the dance we went paintballing with our group and had a great time. I thought we had a great time together, laughing and getting close. We were lions on the battle field defeating all of our foes. I distinctly remember feeling like this was it. My feelings toward her were reciprocated. This was the beginning of something. I was right. This was the beginning of something…but not what I thought. The dance started off well with just the right ratio of slow dances to fast. About an hour in I made a fatal mistake. I went to get us both a drink. When I came back she was gone. At first I didn’t think much of it but time marched on and she was nowhere to be found. I tried to nonchalantly look around the room for her without finding her for a while. As I spoke with people, acting as chill as possible, I was informed that someone had seen her leave with her old flame. Not being willing to believe that, I continued to look for her. Just before the last dance of the night….there she was as if she never went anywhere. She came up, asked me to dance, and went back to acting as she had the entire day. The confusion, relief, frustration must have been apparent after the dance. She tried to explain and finally let me know that, during that time away, the time that was supposed to be ours, she had decided to get back together with her 'Love.' She thanked me for a great day, and being a good 'friend,' asked me to take her home so she could go spend the after party with him. Devastated, but as one who had been friendzoned does, I did. That was the first real heart break I felt while dating." - Aaron remainded in the "friend-zoned" for many years until he met and married Lisa. They now have six kids and will be grandparents soon!

"I met this girl named Rebecca. She was a former spokesperson for Quiznos; she was the 'Quiznos girl.' She and I had been texting for months before we went on this date. She was amazing, honestly! She genuinely cared about how my basketball teams were doing, she would talk life and philosophy with me, and we had pretty much the same sense of humor. We even got to a point where we were texting 'Good morning' to each other every day. So you could imagine my excitement level going into this date! We met up at Leela's European Cafe, a place I used to go to often when I lived in Five Points. We had great conversation while there. It even included some basketball...which put a big smile on my face. We ate a little bit of food and by the end, we didn't want to separate! I came up with an idea to go across the street to Tarantula's, a place where people played pool/billiards and darts. So we walked over, went in, and got a table. We played for an hour of pool, which I felt may not be enough, considering how well things were going. As conversations continued, I focused more on what we were talking about than the actual game of pool. Apparently...I was the only one. We got through two games and I saw it. That look. In a moment's glance, I recognized that the smile she had on her face the previous two hours had shifted. Gone. Now, I'm accustomed to serious game faces or thinking faces. But this face told me, 'It's time to go.' I wasn't much of a 'dater' and didn't go on dates often, so I could have been wrong!! I wasn't. She abruptly, but nicely, said 'I'm ready to go.' The coach in me replayed every moment I could think of that caused the shift. Was it what we were talking about? Did I say something that she didn't agree with? Did I talk over her (I do have a tendency to be long winded...hence the long story)? Was I disrespectful? I couldn't figure it out. Once we got outside, I asked her 'Is everything ok?' She replied, 'I guess I'm just not as into pool as you are. I'm sorry. Have a good night.' I offered to walk her to her car but she kindly declined. I was mind blown. I had to go for a walk because no way I wanted to be this deep in thought and drive. It had later dawned on me that I won both of those games and handily. This was the first time a win wasn't actually a win because that, ladies and gentlemen, was the last time I ever saw her." - That wasn't a love connection, but Chris is now happily married and his wife beats him at pool on a regular basis.

DATE NIGHT

F

ebruary is typically the month of hearts and flowers, chocolate and cupids, and many times grand gestures of wining and dining and day-long outings with intricately planned details. Most of you reading may agree, sometimes less is more and grand gestures, although appreciated, aren’t always what we’re looking for; sometimes we’re just looking for a little something different for a fun night out. If you’re looking to plan a date night or just a night out with friends, there are many options you may not have realized are available for consideration—whether you’re looking for a new culinary experience, something a bit adventurous, a little art and culture or something completely different. Check out what might be your next night out. Want to keep it simple with a nice dinner out? Why not try something new like Cuban food at Havana's Bakery and Cafe, scratch-made Italian at Portofinos, or maybe enjoy the the Greek fare at Opa Grill? Feeling a bit daring? Maybe look into exploring the Denver area a little differently with BigCity Hunt. See some of the best sites through photo challenges

and fun activities to do with a group of friends. Maybe take a drive around town or even to the mountains, but in your DREAM car. Rather take a spin on the dance floor instead of the highway? Many dance schools offer classes for adults from ballroom to hip hop. Check out Fred Astaire Dance for some toe tapping options. Perhaps you’d like to do something out of the ordinary, but make it a night in? Check out www. nightofmystery.com for a variety of Murder Mystery party plots and ideas. Those looking for a sportier night out may want to try some fun straight out of the pages of gym class. Check out Ultimate Dodgeball at Skyzone, book the climbing wall at Parker Recreation or lace up your skates at the Ice Trail at Discovery Park. Maybe drive a few miles out of town and try your hand at any one of the activities at Family Sports Center (laser tag, climbing wall, ice arena, or the twotiered, heated driving range). Instead of a battle on the turf, maybe a battle of wits is in order - check out Try’n Escape. See if you can beat the clock against Ghostly Mayhem, Money Madness or the Sinking Ship room.

Looking to up the culture factor? The PACE Center and Schoolhouse Theater have schedules packed with shows weekly, including the popular Comedy and Cocktails series, the Parker Symphony Orchestra, Firefall, and a number of other music and lecture attractions. You could also take the arts into your own hands, literally, by checking out local Paint Nite events. You’ve most likely seen those, paint a picture with friends while enjoying a beverage establishments; this is a traveling version of that concept. Check out their calendar of events at local bars and restaurants near you (www. paintnite.com) If the idea of painting has you making other plans, check out Plant Nite - instead of painting, plant beautiful succulents in beautiful terrariums and planters. Go green, and go home with new decor! Plants or paint, exploring the city or staying close to home. The next time you get a date night on the calendar or you’re able to get the guys/girls together, think outside the box a bit and try something new on for size. Don’t save the original ideas for once a year on Valentine’s make every night out a new adventure! FEBRUARY 2022 15
