Two decades ago, I reluctantly considered myself on the Subway diet. Back then, my company’s office was in North Fort Worth and the only other options were inside gas stations. Don’t get me wrong, there are some delicious gas station tacos to be found, but let’s get real — you can and should judge an area on its dining scene.

The nearby city of Roanoke took this to heart, and city leaders and restaurateurs worked diligently to create a vibrant dining scene. By 2009, Roanoke was officially named “The Unique Dining Capital of Texas” and now claims more than 60 different eateries.

At the very top of Roanoke’s list is a restaurant worthy of your most romantic dinners and celebratory family occasions. In “A Toast To The Classic Cafe,” we look back as the long-running staple celebrates 30 years as the city's go-to fine dining establishment.

Speaking of fine dining, there’s no bigger day for it than Mother’s Day — and there’s no better way to celebrate Mom than over brunch with the family. For those of you without reservations, don’t fret — Southlake has an ever-expanding list of chef-driven restaurants like those in our Chefs & Caters special section. From lavish eggs benedict and tres leches waffles to mimosas and margaritas on the patio, there are plenty of ways to show her you care — because you can and should judge an area by its dining scene.

A TOAST to the CLASSIC CAFE

THE BELOVED ROANOKE RESTAURANT CELEBRATES

30 YEARS

In the early 1990s, Roanoke didn’t offer much in terms of dining options. Locals had their choice of Dairy Queen and Babe’s Chicken Dinner House. Home to fewer than 2,000 people at the time, the sleepy suburb hadn’t yet earned its title as the “Unique Dining Capital of Texas.” Back then, if you wanted to dine in a white-tablecloth-worthy restaurant, you could drive to Grapevine or venture into Fort Worth or Dallas.

That changed in 1993 when brothers Chris and Curtis Wells opened the doors of The Classic Café. They chose a charming blue cottage on North Oak Street that had previously been a casual establishment known for its inspired Mexican and barbecue dishes.

“Chris and I spent months doing renovations ourselves,” Curtis says. “We did everything but lay the carpet. Our family helped paint and spruce things up.”

MAY 23 • 17 SOUTHLAKE STYLE.COM
18 • MAY 23 SOUTHLAKE STYLE MAGAZINE

Why a quiet street in small-town Roanoke instead of the hustle and bustle of Fort Worth or Dallas? The answer is simple — the brothers wanted to provide a world-class dining experience and build a community around great food right in their backyard.

“We wanted to offer what we coined as ‘casual fine dining,’” Curtis says.

Chris’ experience as a commercial real estate appraiser told him what he needed to know about Roanoke — that it was a high-growth area with huge potential. His early instincts back then proved to be spot on. Today, Roanoke is among the nation’s fastestgrowing cities, with its population surging more than 200% since 2000.

Curtis’ experience as a restaurant manager at the Four Seasons Resort and Club inspired him to open a restaurant with his brother. Food was always a focus in their family, and they still gather every Sunday for a meal together.

“Our mother, especially, was a huge force in our lives,” he says. “One of our favorite meals she made was roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. It was on the menu the day we opened.”

With hospitality being such a longstanding part of their heritage, going into the restaurant business together made perfect sense. This year, The Classic Café is celebrating 30 years in business — a long time in the life of any restaurant.

High-End Meals Close To Home

The Classic Café is known for its sophisticated yet approachable dishes packed with flavor and heart. A seasonally rotating menu delivers a different experience with the same hospitality time after time.

Curtis and Chris provide the general direction, then let the culinary team work their magic. They need only meander through the restaurant’s lush on-site garden to take their pick from a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables. The garden’s bounty of fresh okra, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and herbs fuel beautifully composed dishes such as gazpacho and shrimp and okra fritter.

MAY 23 • 19 SOUTHLAKE STYLE.COM

The Classic Café’s wine list has garnered the restaurant national acclaim, including an Award of Excellence from “Wine Spectator” magazine.

“We put a lot of thought and effort into our wine selections,” Curtis says. “We like to look for boutique wines and pull from different regions. We have some wonderful wines from California and Oregon, and some amazing French, Spanish and Italian wines.”

An Exceptional Experience Every Time

Chris and Curtis attend to every detail, ensuring every guest has the best possible experience. The service staff completes an extensive training program that the brothers have spent the last 30 years perfecting.

“It’s a lengthy process, and they don’t go out on their own until they’re ready,” Curtis says.

They also live by a specific rule of thumb — they haven’t done their jobs if a guest leaves unsatisfied.

“Even if we make a mistake, it’s all in how we handle it,” he says.

Like all restaurants, The Classic Café was forced to adjust during the pandemic. Curtis says they had previously dabbled in takeout, but only because guests

asked. Now, delivery and curbside are regular offerings. The culinary team learned to package proteins in separate vessels so everything maintains its own flavor. Guests can order delivery from all major platforms, including GrubHub and DoorDash.

“We quickly restructured and learned how to offer to-go dishes well,” Curtis says. “The quality of our food didn’t change. Guests learned they could enjoy fine dining at home and not have to cook it.”

Delicious Dishes And Memorable Moments

The Classic Café has long been the perfect place for date nights, birthdays, engagements and family-friendly fêtes of all sorts. The restaurant is also an art gallery, where their aunt, the award-winning artist Carolyn Riegelman, shares her artwork for enjoyment and for sale.

“She has been the only artist on the walls of The Classic Café since 1993,” Chris says.

When it comes to celebrations, many family milestones have been commemorated at The Classic Café. Chris and Curtis’ parents celebrated their 40th and 50th anniversary at the restaurant, and Chris’ daughter got married in the garden.

20 • MAY 23 SOUTHLAKE STYLE MAGAZINE

Many of the guests who come in have a similar relationship with the restaurant. Chris recalls when one couple recently told him they had their first date at The Classic Café, then their engagement dinner, followed by their first-anniversary dinner and every anniversary dinner after that.

“That was an awesome thing for me to wrap my head around,” he says. “This is a special place not just for our extended family, but the whole community.”

Now that Chris and Curtis’ own children are grown and raising their own families, the brothers have more time to focus on the restaurant.

“What’s most fulfilling for me is the customer interaction and the employee growth,” Chris says. “It’s all about the people inside the restaurant, from guests to staff. They’re all family to us.”

Serving Up Support

The Classic Café has been community-driven since the very beginning, working with organizations including Metroport Meals On Wheels, GRACE and Community Storehouse. The restaurant also participates in the annual DFW Restaurant Week, which helps support area nonprofits Lena Pope and the North Texas Food Bank.

“Our parents taught us that community is what you make it,” Chris says. “We enjoy what we’re doing in this community, and we’re proud to call it home.”

Three Decades Of Dining Excellence

No matter what your palate craves or what occasion you’re celebrating, The Classic Café is sure to delight, just as it has for the past 30 years.

“Our goals today are the same as they were in the beginning — provide world-class food, a casual atmosphere and a family-friendly environment,” Curtis says. “We’re grateful that the community has repaid us with loyal support, trust and love for three decades.”

Not many restaurants make it to the milestone of 30 years. But once you visit, you’ll understand why The Classic Café has become a beloved neighborhood gem. It’s not just a place to enjoy food and celebrate life — the restaurant itself is a love letter to the community.

Southlake Residents Find A New Home In Rainmakers Resort & Club

Premium residences, pueblo-style townhomes, a 7,110-yard golf course and the most breathtaking views you’ve ever seen. All of this and more is waiting at Rainmakers Resort and Club in New Mexico, which has become home to many former Southlake residents.

A hidden southwestern gem that bears similarity to high-class ski towns, Rainmakers Resort & Club is a luxurious lifestyle community located in the village of Alto, New Mexico. The crown jewel is the championship golf course, which was masterfully designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones II. With 18 holes spanning vast acreage of protected lands, this natural beauty has been named the No. 1 Golf Course in New Mexico and the 32nd best course in America by “Golfweek Magazine.”

Far from its only offering, Rainmakers also boasts several other attractive amenities, including an elite clubhouse, a 123-seat restaurant and a world-class performing arts center in the adjoining Spencer Theater. Members can indulge in local entertainment at Ruidoso Downs (Horse) Race Track, The Inn of the Mountain Gods Casino and Ski Apache Resort. As an exclusive perk for members, Rainmakers will be introducing a pool this summer. Plus the community is immediately adjacent to 26,000 acres of recreational public lands that are perfect for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

All of this might explain why more and more Southlake residents are making their way to

Rainmakers. Aside from the owners Bill and Kathryn Vaughan, many Southlake families have made Rainmakers their new home. Russ and Cindy Seacat in particular lived in Southlake for 20 years, and they loved Rainmakers so much that they sold their home and moved out there permanently in 2021. Their sons, IV and Race, and their colleague Mason McGuire and his wife Madisyn are currently building houses on the property through their business M4 Construction , with the first home expected to be completed in June.

“The scenery is absolutely spectacular,” Russ says. “The weather is phenomenal. You can go skiing in the morning and play golf in the afternoon. You can’t do things like that in too many places.”

But they’re not the only builders out there. As a second-generation home builder spawning off of Southlake-based Conn-Anderson Homes, twins Donny and Ronnie Anderson saw a unique opportunity with Rainmakers. With five luxury modern mountain homes currently under construction and many more on the way, their business Dylan Homes is set to become a preeminent partner with Rainmakers through a 10-year development plan.

“I call Rainmakers ‘Adventureland,’” Donny says. “Anything you want, you can do out here.”

Whether you’re talking about the homes or the people, there’s a lot of Southlake that lives in Rainmakers Resort and Club — that’s part of what makes it so special.

SOUTHLAKE POLICE SERGEANT WINS LAW ENFORCEMENT AWARD

The Southlake Police Department continues to lead the way in drug prevention, especially when it comes to Sgt. Blas Hernandez. In 2020, Sgt. Blas was looking for educational programs that specifically focused on drug safety in schools. Discovering the Law Enforcement Against Drugs (L.E.A.D.) program, Sgt. Blas introduced it to the police department, which purchased its first elective course for fourth, sixth and eighth graders in 2022. Because of his contributions, Sgt. Blas was honored with the 2023 Instructor of the Year Award. “After reviewing several drug safety programs, L.E.A.D. was my top choice,” Sgt. Blas says. “I chose L.E.A.D. because it focuses more on developing confident and resilient kids, as well as equipping them with the tools needed for drug resistance.”

GARY FICKES FINISHES TIME AT TARRANT COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT

After faithfully serving Tarrant County for 18 years, Gary Fickes announced he will not seek reelection in 2024. A former Southlake mayor, planning and zoning chairman and 2014 Southlake Style Community Impact award winner, Gary Fickes has served on the Tarrant County Commissioners Court since he was first elected in 2006. During his tenure, Commissioner Fickes helped guide the approval of the North Tarrant Expressway and the DFW Connector. He also played an instrumental role in the opening of five new schoolbased medical clinics and helped create the Empowering Seniors event. “This has been the most incredible and rewarding job of my life,” Commissioner Fickes says. “It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve as [the] voice for our transportation needs, senior issues and other community-related initiatives.”

A former Dragon rang the bell last month during the NASDAQ’s closing day ceremony. An MBA student representing the Cornell Blockchain team, Arvind Venkataraman is a Carroll graduate who competed on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” as a high schooler in 2016. More recently, he found himself on a different kind of screen on the NASDAQ marquee promoting his group and their efforts. “It was incredible getting to see the studio and the giant silhouette in Times Square,” Arvind says. “People were high-fiving us in the street. This is a memory I will never forget.”

CARROLL DRAGON BBQ QUALIFIES FOR STATE

The Carroll Dragon BBQ team is once again cooking its way to state. During the regional qualifiers last month, teams came to the Mansfield ISD Performing Arts Center for a cook-off that decided who would go to state. Team Smoke & Co. won second place and were named reserve champions, winning first place for ribs, second place for chicken and fifth place for their brisket. Meanwhile, team DragonFire won third place overall and first place for chicken and second place for ribs. Both groups now head to Round Rock on May 5, where they will compete against 100 high school barbecue teams across Texas.

SOUTHLAKE STREET NAMED AFTER RESCUE DOG

Parkwood Drive has officially gone to the dogs — or rather, one dog in particular. A chihuahua and rat terrier mix, 12-year-old rescue dog Olivia has frequented Northwood Park several times, walking the trails with her owner’s father, Eric Karl. But when Eric found out that commercial businesses would be developed in the area, he proposed changing the street’s name to direct traffic away from their residential crossing. After the Southlake city council approved the name change, city employees successfully put up the new street sign last month, and it’s named Olivia Court in her honor.

According to city documents, the 3,800-square-foot expansion will include six new interactive stations, including a VR shooting game and baseball hitting simulators, as well as a roll-up door for a patio that can seat up to 17 customers. The expansion will be added behind the restaurant, with construction beginning later this month.

Suzanne Parkhill And Stephenie Minor Craft Creative Boards Together

Suzanne Parkhill and Stephenie Minor are living proof you don’t have to be a trained chef to build a stunning charcuterie board. As two sisters who grew up in a big family in Colleyville, they never set out to mass-produce boards and lead classes every month. With the recent success of their Southlake business The Charcuterie Sisters, they have come to learn you can deliver smiles and charcuterie at the same time.

SUZANNE: I’VE BEEN MAKING CHARCUTERIE BOARDS FOR… about 10 years. It started as my go-to appetizer, and it eventually grew to become my meal two or three times a week. The great thing about it is that you don’t have to cook and you can have all of the ingredients you need at your house. If someone pops over unexpectedly, you can whip everything out and have it ready to go at any time. That’s what’s kind of fun, simple and spontaneous about it.

STEPHENIE: I FIRST GOT INVOLVED DURING THE… Christmas season of 2020. At the time, many people were doing virtual office parties and looking for fun ways to interact. My sisterin-law was doing just that for her office and reached out to Suzanne knowing she makes great charcuterie boards.

SUZANNE: WHEN SHE CALLED, I SAID… sure, it can’t be that hard! Halfway through, I called Stephenie and said ‘This is too much work, get over here and help me.’ As we were nearly finished, she says ‘You know, we ought to do this for a business.’ That’s how the whole thing got started.

STEPHENIE: OUR TO-GO BOXES WERE… really successful. We offered three different sizes, and they were all super popular. We also did a lot of individual Jarcuteries, where we packed the same contents of a charcuterie board inside of a jar. Because a lot of people were social distancing and didn’t want to touch each other’s food, they could just pick them up and serve themselves. It was a big hit back then, and it remains a big hit to this day. We’ll still send Jarcuteries to med spas, weddings, grand openings, graduation parties and even hospitals.

SUZANNE: NOWADAYS, WE DO MORE… grazing spreads than usual, but our to-go boards remain popular. We also do classes every now and then. The very first class we ever did was

actually with the Young Men’s Service League over Zoom. We delivered the supplies, we got on Zoom and we did a competition to see who could do the most creative boards. You could tell they really got into it, had fun and it made them forget about their current situation.

STEPHENIE: YEAH, THAT WAS ONE OF THE MOST… fun and hilarious classes we ever had. That’s what’s really fun about charcuterie boards. You get to be creative and build relationships. You become friends with your customers. You hug them and get excited for them and their party.

SUZANNE: ONE THING THAT’S ALWAYS CHANGING IS… the different cheeses. Cheese is always evolving, whether you’re talking about the aging or the ingredients. One trend we’ve been seeing is natural herb and sage cheeses. We try to change up our menu items all the time because we have a ton of repeat customers and want to keep what we’re doing fresh and up to date.

STEPHENIE: SOMETIMES WHEN WE GET REALLY BUSY, WE’LL BRING IN… our mother and mothers-in-law to help. We call them ‘The Charcuterie Grandmas,’ and we’ll sit at our island and start filling big orders like we’re at a quilting station. It really is the sweetest thing just how charcuterie brought all of us together.

SUZANNE: WE TRULY THOUGHT THAT THIS WOULD BE… a fun and brief thing for six months and then we’d move on to something else. If we had known it was going to grow into this huge thing, we probably would have done things a little more professionally.

STEPHENIE: WE REALLY LOVE… what we do. We love a good party, and we love making the party as fun and easygoing for people as possible. And of course, we still love our charcuterie.

Chef Emmanuel Quezada has been working in a kitchen for his entire life. Ever since he was little, he would always cook with his mother and grandmother, and seeing others enjoy their food ignited his passion for cooking. MARGARITA MAKERS WORTH THEIR SALT

The origin stories behind the margarita are as plentiful as today’s menu offerings. Some say the margarita was first concocted in 1938 at a restaurant halfway between Tijuana and Baja, California. Others argue Juarez, Mexico, San Diego, Dallas and even Galveston as the birthplace of the margarita. If you believe the makers of Jose Cuervo, the margarita, which is the Spanish word for “daisy,” was invented by a bartender in honor of the Mexican showgirl Rita de la Rosa.

The traditional margarita hails from the daiquiri family and came to prominence in 1940s Mexico as more Americans began vacationing south of the border. Having succumbed to the sweet and earthy tastes of Tequila, tourists from all over the world

brought their cravings for the sweet and salty sip back home. The classic mix of tequila, triple sec and lime juice has become a staple at bars and sunny patios ever since.

These days, there are many delicious variations to try. From smoked margaritas to spicy ones made with jalapeño-infused tequila, restaurants and bars throughout North Texas customize their own recipes to rave reviews. Whether you like a classic take with salt, take it frozen or want something more inventive, there is never a wrong way to enjoy a margarita. As we firmly plant our feet into the month of May, there are plenty of places nearby to celebrate the joyful expressions of Agave nectar. Just be sure to enjoy your drinks responsibly.

MAY 23 • 43 SOUTHLAKE STYLE.COM

Any list of local margaritas must start with this Fort Worth icon. Since 1935, long before DFW had an airport or Grapevine had a lake, Joe T. Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant was home to the area’s classic margarita experience. Starting with a small patio with a pool and cabana for 16 people, the restaurant’s capacity has grown to serve well over 1,000 loyal customers each night. Come for the family-style fajita dinners but stay for tequila transcendence amongst Joe T.’s lovingly-staffed and decorated patios.

Chuy's

This Tex-Mex hot spot first came to Southlake in 2014 to serve great chips and even better margaritas. With 10 DFW locations, you’re never far from a Chuy’s Famous Rita served on the rocks or frozen. There are plenty of flavors to choose from, like blackberry, mango, peach and watermelon , all served with Corazon Silver tequila. Or you can go old school with Grand Ma’s Rockin’ Rita, served in a simple pint glass with Espolon Reposado and an extra splash of Grand Marnier.

Cristina's Fine Mexican Restaurant

For some solid Tex-Mex and a signature margarita, stop and enjoy the patio at Cristina's Fine Mexican Restaurant in Southlake. Cristina’s house margarita comes in 10 and 20-ounce sizes and showcases a wide range of flavors that you can swirl for just $1 more. One of them is so good, they named it after the owner. The Cristina Rita is made with Herradura Double Barrel Reposado, Cointreau Liqueur, agave nectar and fresh lime juice. Cristina’s also makes a mean mojito, an expertise they blend into their Blackberry Mint Margarita to channel a more relaxed vibe.

Fuzzy's Taco Shop

When you’re living life fast and furious, there may be no better place for a quick hit of tacos and tequila than Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. At Fuzzy’s near Bicentennial Park in Southlake, they keep it simple with a short margarita list, but they serve them up in a big way in their infamous 18-ounce fish bowl cup. Those looking to go all-out are encouraged to order the Beerita, which is their frozen house margarita topped with a dunked bottle of Corona Extra.

Mi Cocina

Long before Southlake had an immense dining scene, it had Mi Cocina. And Mi Cocina had us thanks to the most appetizing Tex-Mex around. More importantly, Mi Cocina has the Mambo Taxi, their signature frozen margarita made with Sauza Silver tequila and a swirl of sangria. This perennial Readers’ Choice favorite stands apart because of an especially sweet homemade sangria made with Pinot Noir, brandy and fruit juices.

Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar

Even if there are three locations across DFW, Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar is a one-of-a-kind live entertainment experience. Tequila fans in particular will love that it’s also a place for top-notch margaritas. The signature Casarita at Pete’s gives the margarita a manly, bro-vibe twist thanks to George Clooney’s Casamigos Blanco Tequila. After it’s shaken (not stirred) with agave nectar and hand-squeezed lime juice, it’s served old-fashioned style over fat ice. This is a margarita that’s meant to be taken seriously.

Mi Dia From Scratch

True margarita lovers know this Grapevine eatery is insanely devoted to 100% Blue Agave Tequilas and offers the most eclectic range of tequilas in the area. Their tequilas are infused in-house with strawberries, blueberries and pineapple-chipotle. To stay chilled on a warm afternoon patio, order the Hell Freezes Over, made with green chileinfused herradura silver tequila, Cointreau, lime, cucumber, basil, agave nectar, dry ice and with a Hatch Pepper & Salt Blend on the rim. Always one to be ahead of the tequila curve, Mi Dia’s signature infusions can also be found in its Ranch Water with lime and Socorro Blanco Tequila.

Gloria’s Latin Cuisine

With one of the city’s more enviable patios overlooking the heart of Southlake, Gloria’s Latin Cuisine has become a welcome respite for area foodies and reposado aficionados. At Gloria’s, inventive cuisine pairs with a lengthy list of signature cocktails all with a nod to the founders of the popular Dallas-based restaurant group. At the top of the list is Gloria’s 1986 Margarita, which is made with Casamigos Reposado Tequila, lime juice and St. Germain

Elderflower liqueur for a balanced flavor that’s not too sweet. However, the La Duena employs Casamigos Mezcal and chipotle pineapple syrup and a tamarindo rim if sweet is what you desire.

Rodeo Bar

Live music is the next best thing to tacos when enjoying a margarita with friends. At the recently reestablished Rodeo Bar inside the Adolphus Hotel, revelers on Fridays and Saturdays can enjoy a lengthy list of tequilas and a rotating list of rock and western musicians. Stay true to form and order the Rodeo ‘Rita, made with Lunazul Tequila, Cointreau, lime and a Tajin rim.

Reata Restaurant

Joe T. Garcia’s greatness expands outward, but Reata expands upwards for four stories to provide the best views a Fort Worth margarita will ever see. Unfortunately, the simple yet delectable Margarita Fresca, made with Socorro Blanco Tequila, triple sec, simple syrup and lime won’t last long. Views like these above Sundance Square deserve a righteous drink, and the Millionaire Margarita fits the bill. Herradura Ultra Anejo combines with Grand Marnier Louis-Alexandre to elevate this drink, but not as high as the Avion “44” Extra Anejo and Grand Marnier Centenaire of the Billionaire Margarita. If the view doesn’t make you catch your breath, its $50 price tag will.

Ninja Invades The Great Outdoors

New Woodfire Grill Blends Several Kitchen Technologies Into One

DETAILS

Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill

Weight: 31 lbs.

Dimensions:

18”W x 24”D x 13”H

Price: $370

NinjaKitchen.com

From high-tech refrigerators to multipurpose ovens and sleek gas ranges, luxury appliance brands are infamous in today’s affluent homes. However, even a Wolf or a full complement of Vikings haven’t been able to fend off the wave of Ninja products invading our granite countertops. Having won the battle indoors with blenders, air fryers and more, Ninja now turns its attention to the backyard with its latest Woodfire Outdoor Grill.

The company that started it all with an impressive blender in the early ’90s now blends multiple technologies into one outdoor master grill that can burn real wood pellets for intense smoke flavor.

The Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill sports a powerful convection fan that heats up quickly and circulates air around your food for even cooking. The grill also has an integrated smoker box that can surround your food with natural hardwood flavors with as little as half of a cup of pellets. It can also work just like today’s air fryers to create crispy meats and veggies in record time.

Despite all of this, many will say the real beauty of this grill is its compact size, allowing you to take it anywhere from the backyard to the campsite or the parking lot of your favorite team. With a flurry of accessories including a collapsible grill stand, this product won’t be stealthy for long.

Flame Of The Cowboy

Chama Gaucha Brings Brazilian Flair Back To Grapevine

Chama Gaucha

4025 William D Tate Ave.

Grapevine

682.799.4025

ChamaGaucha.com

Founded in 2008 by João Carlos Ongaratto, who worked at Fogo de Chão for over two decades, Chama Gaucha is a new steakhouse that focuses on bringing authentic Southern Brazilian cuisine to diners’ tables. With the name translating to “Flame of the Cowboy,” Chama Gaucha has opened locations in San Antonio, Houston and Chicago before expanding to North Texas in the spring.

“We pride ourselves on serving high-quality, exquisitely flavorful meats and are thrilled to give the community a truly traditional taste of Brazil,” João says of his newest restaurant.

“We’re bringing a new and thrilling culinary experience to Grapevine.”

Diners get hit with that experience immediately with a massive 200-bottle wine cellar greeting guests from the moment they walk in. Wood, stone and a warm, rich color scheme further complement the southern Brazilian vibe. And a stunning 60-foot mural of a Brazilian waterfall hangs above the salad bar, which is packed with specialty items including smoked gouda, Spanish chorizo, fresh-cut salami and prosciutto, jumbo asparagus and broccolini.

Don’t fill up your plate too much, because the servers will bring even more side dishes to your

table. The savory garlic mashed potatoes fill your mouth with a nice, savory flavor, while the Italian fried polenta provides an extra crunch ahead of your meal. Be sure to try one of the caramelized bananas, especially since it cleans your palate so you can experience the fullest flavor. Plus you’ll definitely want to order a cocktail before you begin feasting. Its signature cocktail, the caipirinha, is made with fresh lime juice, sugar and 2 ounces of cachaça liquor and can come in strawberry, pineapple, passionfruit and tropical flavors.

All of this is only the first half of the Chama Gaucha dining experience. The other half comes from trained Brazilian chefs, or “gauchos.” Using large skewers, they bring 12 different kinds of meats from the kitchen straight to your table and cut each slice right in front of you. All you have to do is flip your card at the table from red to green, and the gauchos will start serving you.

With USDA prime beef sourced from the midwest, Chama Gaucha’s steaks are extra tender thanks to being wet-aged for 45 days. The garlic Fraldinha, or bottom sirloin, is one of the most popular cuts, while the ribeye is another flavorful option. Of course, you can never go wrong with the picanha, which is the prime cut of the sirloin.

But beef isn’t all that Chama Gaucha has to offer. The Cordiero lamb is raised and fed right out of Colorado and provides a salty bite whether you try the leg or chop. The porco ribs are dusted in parmesan, while the chicken breast is wrapped in bacon for a juicier result. You won’t want to miss the Linguica sausage either, which is freshly seasoned with garlic and mild pepper flakes.

With all of this food, it’ll be hard to make room for dessert. But the effort is worth it, especially with options like the chocolate mousse cake served with white chocolate mousse icing. The papaya cream blends fresh papaya fruit with ice cream to help settle the stomach after a large meal. And the fireball cheesecake earns its namesake by setting a New York-style cheesecake on fire thanks to a healthy spread of brown sugar and Vanilla bean liquor.

Between its many meat, salad and dessert options, you can trust Chama Gaucha to bring the best of Brazilian cuisine to your table.

“We really pride ourselves on the quality of our food and strive for the best hospitality and service to provide a truly authentic southern Brazil experience,” manager Camila Videla says. “People love a show, and that’s what Chama Gaucha is known for.” Photos by Susie Burleson

The Texas Rangers Show Off New Game-Day Concessions

Long gone are the days of just peanuts and Cracker Jack. In recent years, some of the Texas Rangers’ ballpark concessions seemingly came from left field. Anyone remember the 2-pound ghost pepper burger? Or the Choomongous? And any Rangers fan worth their Josh Hamilton jersey has heard of The Boomstick. This Spring, both baseball and overindulgence are back in action, and you’ll be glad to know there’s a new Boomstick on the roster at Globe Life Field.

The first oversized hot dog hit the stadium and Rangers fans’ stomachs back in 2012. Affectionately named the Boomstick as an homage to Nelson Cruz’s bat, the $26 all-beef classic came smothered in chili, nacho cheese, jalapenos and caramelized onions and weighed in at over 3 pounds. The 2023 version of the Boomstick is also 2 feet long, but instead, it’s a hamburger. At $34.99, it comes topped with Texas Chili Company chili, Rico’s nacho cheese, jalapenos and onion rings. Be prepared to share if you buy this beefy monstrosity.

Far from the Rangers’ only home run, there are even more exciting new concessions items to look forward to this season. Aptly named and truly Texan, The Brisket Croissant includes generous portions of house-smoked Nolan Ryan beef brisket that are layered into croissant dough and baked until golden brown before it’s glazed in Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce. Deciding whether to get chips or a pretzel is no longer a dilemma either thanks to the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Pretzel, which is topped with crushed Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Vegans and healthier eaters need not despair either, with the PLT sandwich switching out traditional bacon for a balsamic-glazed portabella mushroom.

New to the roster is Hurtado Barbecue, the Arlington food truck that became a staple on the Texas barbecue scene in 2019. It earned a spot in the concessions rotation last year via the “Arlington Eats” stand in section 101. Proving their worth in the majors, Hurtado stands tall this year as the official barbecue partner of Globe Life Field. Be on the lookout for their flavorful brisket options and their infamous beef rib. At $44.99, it just may be the most coveted of all of the new players. Photos by Texas Rangers/Delaware North

The Flavors Of France La Parisienne Bistro Brings

French Cuisine To The Star In Frisco

You don’t have to travel to Paris to taste the fresh, authentic flavors of a French bistro. Thanks to La Parisienne, all you have to do is drive to The Star In Frisco.

Inspired by the romantic City of Light, La Parisienne French Bistro serves authentic French cuisine for lunch, dinner, weekend brunch and high tea. This new and exciting restaurant is the creative vision of Mondi Tag, a thriving restaurateur with over two decades of experience. Born and raised in Texas, Tag became the youngest female franchisee for Dickey's BBQ at 19 and later went on to manage Genghis Grill in Dallas. With a passion for food and an innate entrepreneurial spirit, Mondi set her sights on creating La Parisienne, inspired by one of her favorite places to travel.

“I love traveling to slow down from the everyday hustle and do as the French do,” Mondi says. “We designed the space in hopes that our guests will feel as if they are sitting in a chic bistro in Paris.”

La Parisienne French Bistro exudes an ambiance of elegance and sophistication, reminiscent of a chic bistro in Paris. Be swept away by Tiffany Blue accents, water features, 3D murals, dazzling chandeliers and a stunning array of greenery and florals that create a welcoming atmosphere for guests.

Indulge in mouth-watering entrees such as the Coq Au Vin with tender chicken, porcini mushrooms and red onions, all simmered in red wine to create a rich flavor. For vegetarians, there's the rich and flavorful Bourguignon with mixed baby veggies and potatoes. You can’t go wrong with a French classic like Moules Marinières et Frite, which boasts savory mussels cooked to perfection paired with garlic, shallots, parsley and crispy pommes frites.

Customers can pick from a variety of drinks to pair with their meal, including Illy coffee, Tea Forté high tea and French cocktails like Parmida’s La Vie En Rose, made with Ketel One Grapefruit and rose, and The Boulevardier, made with Elijah Craig Bourbon. For those with a sweet tooth, the housemade desserts are the perfect way to end a meal, with the dessert menu including Mille Feuilles, hazelnut pralines and eclairs.

With its carefully crafted menu, signature housemade desserts and extensive drink selection, La Parisienne French Bistro will take you from the Star all the way to Paris. Photos by Kathy Tran

home STYLE

Timelessly Tuscan

Homes built here in the late ‘90s and early 2000s often took on the Tuscan aesthetic. In recent years, terra cotta colors, ornate archways and mosaic tiles have been remodeled or built anew with a contemporary look of muted whites and grays and angular clean lines throughout. However, the architecture and design at 5513 Montclair Drive in Colleyville is timelessly Tuscan and remains in its original form from its 2011 construction. Listed for $8,250,000, this 11,530-square-foot estate unapologetically enlists all the grandeur of its era across its 2-acre lot.

BEAMING WITH LUXURY

Upon entering the front gate, you can’t help but notice the signature tiled fountain and expansive clay-tiled roofscape capped with an ornate copper dome reminiscent of magnificent structures of the period. Once inside, the six-bedroom, sixand-a-half bathroom masterpiece continues to impress from its hand-scraped wood floors to its expertly-crafted exposed beam ceilings.

One can’t help but feel like royalty traversing grand arched walkways accompanied by Tuscan columns and adorned with stained glass windows throughout. In fact, every one of the bedrooms is “master worthy” and comes complete with boutique custom closets, while the bathrooms are just as exquisite right down to their travertine floors.

WINE AND DINE

Mealtime at this culinary marvel has also been master planned with three full kitchens, a summer kitchen and a well-appointed stained glass wine grotto with storage for 180 bottles of your favorite Barolo or Montepulciano vintages. Meals can be enjoyed beneath exquisite chandeliers at a casual dining table for eight in the oversized kitchen or in the formal dining room that boasts unencumbered backyard views.

After dinner, enjoy the lush outdoor oasis where travertine tiles outline a magnificent pool bookended by flowing water features. Or make your way to the game room or the award-winning projection theater that is so beautiful, it's a shame to turn the lights down.

Some homes are so classic in style and taste that they should never be remodeled. This Colleyville masterpiece is one of them. Photos by Cozrob Photography

A Tribute Fit For The King

Get “All Shook Up” At The Lone Star Elvis Festival

At the Lone Star Elvis Festival, the King of Rock and Roll's signature bedazzled jumpsuits, jet-black hair, hip swivels, velvety baritone voice and classic lip curl are brought to life in all their glory. Over the course of four days in Grapevine, this festival celebrates Elvis Presley's life, music and legacy.

Throughout his illustrious career, which was recently chronicled in an Oscar-nominated movie, Elvis achieved gold, platinum and multi-platinum certifications on more than 150 different albums and singles. His greatest hits include "Heartbreak Hotel," "Suspicious Minds," "Jailhouse Rock," "Can't Help Falling in Love" and "Hound Dog." Additionally, he is a member of five Halls of Fame: Rock 'n' Roll, Country, Gospel, Rockabilly and R&B. With all of his achievements, it is no surprise that he is considered one of the greatest musicians of all time.

Each Lone Star Elvis Festival event will transport you to a pivotal moment in the rock legend's career. “Elvis Goes Hollywood” showcases his transition from a successful musician to a Hollywood movie star, with 31 films under his belt including "Jailhouse Rock." Two award-winning tribute artists recreate Elvis' “'68 Comeback Special,” in which he performed classic songs in his famous black leather outfit. “Hot Vegas Nights” whisks the audience to the International Hotel, where he performed over 830 sold-out concerts between 1969 and 1976. “Aloha 50” celebrates the 50th anniversary of his iconic Aloha from Hawaii concert, broadcasted worldwide in 1973.

The festival concludes with a performance by Bill Cherry who won the 2009 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest. Between the many tribute artists who capture the King’s music, style and personality, the Lone Star Elvis Festival will have you shake, rattle and roll for days.

The Flavors Of Fredericksburg

Wine And Good Times Are Only A Day Trip Away

Spring has sprung, and it’s time to take advantage of the limited season in which temperatures stay under 100 degrees. When it comes to taking in the natural beauty of Texas, there is arguably no better place to do so than the Hill Country. Rolling hills, cedar trees mingling with prickly pear cacti and seas of wildflowers await you. This is true for Fredericksburg, but with the added bonus of dozens of wineries. Enjoy a gorgeous drive down winding country roads, book a bed and breakfast and have a memorable weekend without leaving the great state of Texas. Whether you’re looking for family fun or a romantic getaway, this small town caters to both.

Wineries

Fredericksburg’s economy is practically fueled by wine. Bed and breakfast spots boast connections to wine tour companies, and it’s not uncommon to see limos roll in and out of this small town en route to two or three vineyards. It has become both a bachelorette party paradise and a romantic escape. Let someone else do all of the planning, coordinating and, most importantly, the driving by booking a wine tour. If you prefer a more independent route, make sure to have a designated driver. No matter how you choose to visit the wineries, here are a few you can’t miss. For the perfect day of drinking, head to The Edge Resort. Wonderful grounds pair with a

variety of Texas wines spearheaded by English Newsom Cellars of Lubbock. For a fun and lively scene, stop by Fat Ass Winery. They offer flights of flavored wines that probably shouldn’t taste good but somehow do. And yes, there is a real donkey there to greet you.

Hiking

Take a trek to the top of Enchanted Rock for a view that will take your breath away – if the steep climb didn’t already. While the peak of the iconic granite dome is the most popular attraction, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area has so much more to offer. Test your endurance by descending Enchanted Rock and heading up the jagged rocks of Turkey Peak or the puzzle-pieced granite boulders of Little Rock. If increasing elevation is not your thing, there are trails that loop around each monolithic feature. If you are visiting on a holiday or weekend, make sure to arrive early or reserve a day pass in advance. The park opens at 8 a.m., but due to a limited capacity, can close to new visitors as early as 9 a.m. There are electronic signs on the way there to inform hiking hopefuls of any closures. You can also follow the official Twitter account, @GoEnchantedRock, for updates on the natural area. If you need a plan B, Pedernales Falls State Park is about an hour away, and it’s definitely worth the drive.

Shopping And Dining

Downtown is the gem of Fredericksburg. The cutest boutique and amazing food are secondary to the overall atmosphere of hospitality. No one is in a hurry – in a good way. Stroll down Main Street and duck into the variety of adorable boutiques full of items you never knew you needed. For the spice-lover, head to Rustlin’ Rob’s. Every sauce imaginable is out and waiting to be sampled. Stocked with hot sauces, barbecue sauces, jams, spreads, marinades and more, this store is a haven for foodies. Stock up for your next at-home spa day at It’s aGlow. The serene shop has gorgeous collections of honeycomb calcite candle covers amongst the rest of the decor.

When it comes to good eats, this little downtown strip does not disappoint. Shopping and savoring intertwine at Vaudeville off of Main Street. A gourmet menu is served on weekend evenings from 5 to 9 p.m. Serving featured entrees such as Duck Confit with dijon potatoes, spring greens and a raspberry gastrique, Vaudeville is sure to thrill. Venture onto Llano Street for a hole-in-thewall Italian joint that will never disappoint. Pasta Bella is pretty small, so be prepared to wait. But once seated, you will find the wait was more than worth it. Save room for dessert, because cute little coffee shops line Main Street and offer a fair share of sweet treats.
