CREATIVE DIRECTOR Bruce Sons

Welcome to Southlake, Texas, where the robots are taking over! Okay, we’re not quite Silicon Valley, but with Southlake-based RobotLAB bringing robotics to the masses and Carroll ISD’s robotics program powering up the next generation of talent, the idea of “small suburb meets tech hub” isn’t as farfetched as you might think. We recently got to meet RobotLAB founder and CEO Elad Inbar at his offices in the VariSpace building, but not before we received a techno-hello from Pepper. She’s just one of many smart and personable robots the company is integrating into all kinds of area businesses. From banks and restaurants to hotels and even senior centers, Elad and his team ensure robots are no longer just for sci-fi movies — they are becoming an important part of our daily lives. When it comes to Carroll ISD’s robotics students, the intelligence is anything but artificial. STEM instructor Leah Schwedler is leading the charge in educating the next generation of tech titans. Under her guidance, the Dragons have not missed entrance to the prestigious VEX World Championships since 2014, placing them in the top 5% of robotics teams worldwide. Looking around our small city, it’s awe-inspiring to see that the future is happening right now.

ALAN DENNINGTON, M.D.

Establishing Your Body's Baseline Better Faster Physician On The Benefits Of Dexa Scanning What is a Dexa scan? Traditionally, Dexa scanning was primarily used to measure bone density for patients with osteoporosis. Technology advancements have since made it possible to measure other types of tissue, allowing an accurate measurement of your body’s composition. This means the Dexa scanner can tell you with a high degree of accuracy how much of your body weight is muscle, fat or bone. It is currently the most accurate way to determine your body fat percentage and muscle mass, and can even break down specific parts of your body. Why is Dexa scanning helpful? Having an accurate measure of your body composition is important for your overall health maintenance and is particularly helpful for weight loss and fitness. A scale is a poor tool for measuring progress because your overall weight can fluctuate day to day based on a number of factors that aren’t related to actual fat loss. Additionally, anyone who attempts to lose weight by incorporating exercise will often replace fat with muscle growth. If you are using a scale and don’t see a change despite your hard work, that can be very demotivating. Having an accurate starting point is important in helping you stick with changes and making them lifelong habits. If you are starting any kind of fitness or weight loss journey, you should definitely establish your baseline first whether through a Dexa scan or something else. How often should I get a Dexa scan? If you are planning to change your body composition through weight loss or a new fitness program, we recommend a monthly Dexa scan. If you’re looking to maintain your current status, we recommend a quarterly scan. Who should consider Dexa scanning? Anyone who is interested in their health status should consider Dexa, whether they want to improve their body health, want to maintain where they’re at or are just wanting to see what health risks they may have. How can I schedule a scan? The first scan to establish your baseline is discounted to $25 from the normal price of $75. We have multiple options for discounted scans depending on frequency, as well as family discounts for multiple members. We are open seven days a week and you can also walk in any time.

That’s why Charis Behavioral Health is here to help. Charis is a safe place dedicated to healing and helping children ages 10-17 overcome any mental, emotional or behavioral challenges that cause struggle and life disruptions. Utilizing evidence-based, research-driven treatment modalities, Charis prioritizes the child’s well-being within a therapeutic and inclusive environment. Charis has a robust multidisciplinary team that includes licensed health care professionals, a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, nurse practitioners and therapists that provide mental health care within a combination of specialty, intensive outpatient (IOP) and partial hospitalization programs (PHP) to fit the child’s specific needs. Charis understands that when a child is struggling, the family is struggling. That’s why its team members aspire to facilitate change by getting to

Dr. Jana Mackay’s psychological evaluations give great insight and are very helpful for treatment planning. Program specialist Allison Schumacher meets kids where they are to make them feel seen while also holding them accountable to their treatment goals. Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about your child running behind in school — education coordinator Laken Pak works with local school districts to ensure students finish their classwork while teaching coping strategies and stabilizing mental health symptoms. As a family therapist with over 40 years of experience, clinical consultant Brenda Hendrix-Smith knows that children sometimes need more intensive treatment. That’s why she appreciates family program specialist Elizabeth Kailey working directly with families for Charis@ Home, an at-home program that centers care around the entire family. Yoga instructor Carolyn Taluja helps them tap into their inner selves through mindful meditation practices. Chris Covington helps patients disconnect from everyday life and realign themselves in an off-site ranch through the Charis Unplugged program. Together with the support of therapy dogs, horses, goats and many other furry and feathered friends, kids can hit the pause button and find serenity within themselves and nature. Charis’ care doesn’t end at discharge. Once they complete their PHP or IOP care, patients are automatically enrolled in Charis’ aftercare support group, which is provided free of charge. Patient care advoc ate Ramiro Edgar Reta looks forward to a year full of all-new alumni events, as well as January’s therapeutic activity that has members create a vision board to set goals for 2024. Child and adolescent mental health is an issue that every community faces in one way or another — that’s why helping kids to stop suffering in silence is at the forefront of Charis’ care and convictions. Three years after opening in Southlake, Charis has helped over 200 children improve their mental and emotional health so they can live happier and fuller lives. With its care rooted in grace, kindness and life, you can trust that every child will be seen, heard and known at Charis Behavioral Health.

RobotLAB Delivers High-Tech Solutions From Southlake

eet Pepper. For the past 10 years, she has worked as a receptionist for several offices, hospitals, hotels, banks and retailers, answering customers’ questions and pointing them in the right direction. When she isn’t providing topnotch customer service, Pepper enjoys singing, dancing, playing the guitar, telling jokes and making new friends. In just about every way, Pepper is your typical productive worker. Except that she isn’t — she’s a robot. “I can do almost everything you can imagine,” Pepper says. “I have similar senses like humans do. I can see, hear and talk. I can also move almost like humans, but instead of muscles, I use motors and wheels.” Pepper is one of many robots distributed by RobotLAB, a technology company that is located on the third floor of VariSpace Southlake. Founded in 2007 by entrepreneur and CEO Elad Inbar, RobotLAB is incorporating the future into today’s workforce by testing, processing and deploying thousands of robots to perform a wide variety of hands-on duties. More and more of their robots can be found in schools, restaurants and businesses across the country. With plans to rapidly expand its footprint in both Texas and the nation, RobotLAB and Southlake are in the middle of it all.

RobotLAB Founder CEO Elad Inbar and PEPPER

For as long as he could remember, Elad loved playing with robots. As a young boy growing up in Israel, he always got his hands on the newest electronics, disassembling them and learning how they ticked. “I’ve loved robots since I was a child,” Elad expresses. “We had an RC store [in my neighborhood], and they had everything from small cars to big 20foot airplanes. I spent all of my pocket money there. I built great projects, I learned how to control them. That’s kind of where everything came from.” After attending Ono Academic College in Israel, Elad built upon his technical prowess as the head of research and development for an internet and communications company. Then in 2007, Elad got a burst of inspiration after Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the first-generation iPhone. “It was like a 10-pound hammer to the head that the market was ready for something else,” Elad says. “You had more connected toys — drones, planes, cars — all enabled and controlled by an app on your smartphone or tablet. We eliminated the electronics and programming knowledge required for it all. All you had to do was turn it on and pair it with your phone.” Originally conceived as an educational robotics company, RobotLAB’s initial lineup of products included drones, robotic arms and mobile robots that helped K-12 students learn math and algebra. “Everyone always asks ‘Why do I have to use quadratic equations? I’ll never use it in my life,’” Elad says. “So what we did was we took a quadcopter with a camera that’s facing down, and we had students calculate how large the surface area is, how many pictures you can take, how long the battery would run.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

JAN 24 • 21

All of a sudden, you can put quadratic equations to practical use in a real-world setting that makes sense.” After relocating RobotLAB to San Francisco in 2011, the market began showing a need for more practically oriented robots. Users were requesting cleaning, vacuuming and carpet-washing robots, and manufacturers were looking to meet those needs. That was when Elad put two and two together and became the middle man connecting it all. “Over the years, we’ve started seeing more capable robots, and as we onboard them, we started seeing more mixed-use cases,” Elad says. “As the market advances, we’re staying up to date and adding more products to make sure we cover whatever the customer needs are.” Those products include four-legged robots, underwater remote-operated vehicles, food service delivery machines and UV robots that disinfect hospitals and surgery rooms. As they expanded their operation and service area, RobotLAB saw a need to relocate in order to better service new markets in the U.S. That’s when Elad decided to move RobotLAB to Southlake last year. “If something goes wrong, you want to be able to reach someone on the phone. But if it’s 8 a.m. in New York, it’ll be 5 a.m. in California, and no one will take your call,” Elad says. “[Southlake] came up again and again as the right 22 • JAN 24

area because we’re just a couple hours of flight from almost anywhere in the country thanks to DFW Airport. That brings us much closer to the general population and being able to service our customers better.” Nestled into a 26,000-square-foot collaborative office space with 32 employees, RobotLAB has everything it needs to run a robust operation out of its Southlake headquarters. Immediately through the entrance is the showroom, which has all of their robots on display for presentations and demonstrations. If you’re lucky, you might even catch Pepper testing her motors or sneaking in a quick dance. Past the sales and marketing departments, technicians are hard at work preparing and troubleshooting their robots, ensuring all of their systems are fully operational before being shipped out. If issues arise during its deployment, technicians can go out to the field and troubleshoot on-site. “The last thing I want to do is deploy a robot and have a customer tell me it doesn’t work,” Elad says. “We make sure the robots that go to market are worthy of our time and our customers’ time.” For more in-depth repairs, robots will be brought back to the headquarters’ shop, where they will undergo a full diagnostic and restoration with extra parts kept in the back of the warehouse. Once all of the fixes are completed, the robot will be taken to the training facility in the back to be tested. “This is the playground where they practice all the reallife scenarios,” Elad says. “We’ll simulate environments, throw up obstacles and program the robots so they don’t bump into things and find a different path.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

JAN 24 • 23

CEO Elad Inbar and the RobotLAB team show off their robot lineup for today's business needs.

But it isn’t just the robot that’s tested — new technicians are also challenged to simulate repairs during a regular work day, where they’ll have to deal with foot traffic and a wide variety of other real-world distractions. “We want to see that when technicians go to the field, they know how to handle everything regardless of whatever distractions they may experience,” Elad says. Elad says that customer service is RobotLAB’s No. 1 priority, and it’s what he believes will set them apart from other technology companies. With five franchises located across Texas, North Carolina, New Jersey and Florida, Elad says his goal is to have 100 teams established by the end of next year to service their local communities. “Business owners are not willing to make the jump unless they know someone is down the street who can help them,” Elad says. “Having RobotLAB teams all around the country where they can deploy the robots and be there when something happens is integral. Our team cannot be everywhere all at once. Being able to service local communities is the thing that will unlock the potential of RobotLAB in the market.” One of RobotLAB’s biggest priorities is to always emphasize the human element of every business. VariSpace CEO Jason McCann remembers the first time he met Pepper during a walk through RobotLAB when it moved in last summer, and he couldn’t believe how natural their interaction felt. “Pepper looks up, opens her eyes and says ‘Hi, welcome to VariSpace!’” Jason recalls. “I’m sitting there talking to Pepper, and we were having a full-blown conversation. It was like I got a glimpse of the future. If this was the beginning, I can only imagine where they’re going.” 24 • JAN 24

Elad says the multipurpose functions of Pepper mirrors RobotLAB’s commitment to all of its industries. While Pepper thrives in concierge roles, Elad says she also functions in university lectures and assisted living centers. “Many assisted living facilities are so understaffed that they don’t have enough therapists to work with patients,” Elad says. “Pepper can come to someone with dementia and remind them who they are — show pictures of their wedding day, their kids and their family. And the robot is nonjudgmental. It can do it 50 times a day if needed.” But Elad isn’t seeking to take anybody’s job. If anything, he’s trying to support the workplace by having robots take over more menial tasks so employees’ efforts can be prioritized elsewhere. “None of these robots can replace a human being,” Elad says. “At the end of the day, someone will need to come in and program the robot, change the settings, power it up and down. What these robots do is relieve people to do more important, more meaningful jobs. Everywhere there is a need that people don’t want to fulfill anymore, technology will step in and find a solution.” When it comes to its mission, RobotLAB is all about prioritizing people and making their everyday lives simpler and easier. With over 15,000 robots deployed and counting, RobotLAB is well on its way to making that happen — especially with new products rolling out like a ChefBot Cooking Robot and a new Servi Lift delivery robot. “You want to elevate the customer experience — you want to elevate human lives,” Elad says. “Technology will change, but if you don’t have the right team, the right mentality and the right way to move mountains and make things happen, you have nothing. Technology by itself is great, but it doesn’t do anything unless you have the right people behind it.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

Reach For The Sky

T

he world of interior design continues to evolve, and those with a colorful frame of mind should be excited. After featuring hues of red, green and bronze for the last three years, Sherwin-Williams’ global color and design team has officially announced their color of the year for 2024, which has us looking “Upward” to shades of blue. Thanks to their keen eye for color trends, anyone can feel confident about updating the color schemes in their homes.

ONWARD AND UPWARD Ascending from the earthy tone of last year’s Redend Point, this year’s color Upward is a breezy blue that invites us to relax and keep looking toward the heavens. "Upward SW 6239 represents the gentle forward momentum in all of our lives," director of color marketing Sue Wadden says. "It brings to life that carefree, sunny day energy that elicits a notion of contentment and peace. With this color, we invite consumers to take a pause and infuse a new sense of ease and possibility into their spaces – one that doesn't overwhelm but rather establishes meditation and tranquility." BRINGING CLARITY TO COMMUNAL SPACES This lighter, transitional blue brings a sense of inner peace to both residential and commercial spaces. Imagine using Upward on your walls, coupled with natural wood elements and white accents to create a clean and peaceful setting perfect for both relaxing and entertaining. Those unsure about making such a wholesale change to their space can incorporate newer colors and trends on a smaller scale by opting for airy-hued decor pieces like pillows, throws and curtains. COLOR COMPLIMENTS Upward also pairs well with deep greens and darker blues, yet still adds a pop with more delicate tints like the company’s slate-like Tricorn Black, Honeydew and other earthy shades that pay homage to the natural world. Whether you want to create a spa-like bathroom, a cozy kitchen or a mindful creative space, reach skyward for your color inspiration.

or over 90 years, LEGO has connected to fans young and old, whether it’s through movies, TV, public art or even everyday decor. Now this creative community of brick builders and minifigure fans can come together at Brickfest 2024. As the ultimate gathering for LEGO enthusiasts, admirers and builders, Brickfest is a celebration of the LEGO community where fans showcase their creativity, share their passion and revel in the endless possibilities that can come from these colorful bricks. Enjoy hands-on activities like exciting building challenges, creating dynamic new worlds in the Minecraft zone, posting onto the “graffiti” wall, racing against others in the 35-foot-long track and diving into the brick pit filled with over 200,000 bricks. Plus, you’ll get the chance to meet cosplayers and contestants from Fox’s “LEGO Masters” television show.

When you’re not building or playing with a pile of bricks, explore the larger-than-life LEGO structures you can find throughout the convention center. From carefully crafted city landscapes to breathtaking replicas of famous landmarks, these sculptures are as big as their creators’ imaginations. Once you’re done snapping a selfie, swing by one of many workshops, where you can learn to become a master builder yourself. or over seven decades, Luby’s has remained a fixture in Texas dining, bringing homestyle comfort food like fried chicken, mac and cheese and coconut cream pie from tray to table. While the former Luby’s located at Mockingbird Lane is scrubbing the cafeteria concept, an elevated new restaurant is moving in to keep the spirit of homemade cooking alive. Founded by Jon Alexis, the restaurateur behind popular Dallas concepts such as TJ’s Seafood Market, Malibu Poke, Escondido and Ramble Room, Birdie’s Eastside is a patio bar

and grill that reimagines family dining. With the restaurant located on 2 sprawling acres, Birdie’s is one of the biggest concepts in Dallas and can seat 150 diners inside and out. “We’ve acquired an important property in the heart of East Dallas,” Jon says. “Having been connected to East Dallas for decades, we can’t wait to serve this incredible neighborhood.” Artfully designed by architect Hatsumi Kuzuu, Birdie’s explodes with color with a “cosmic country” aesthetic that’s as funky as it is unique. Vintage kayaks, lake maps and cowboy hats adorn the walls, while paintings of dogs, Texas landmarks

and aliens landing at the Granada Theater fill out the interior. The 3,500-square-foot turfed patio is perfect for large groups with oversized furniture and giant oak trees that serve as a shady spot on sunny days. Birdie’s entire aesthetic can be boiled down to its welcome signage, which has Cadillac Ranch-style graffiti spray-painted over an old Luby’s logo. “We originally tried to ‘get the Luby’s’ out of the building,” Jon says. “Soon, we realized the Texas legacy was the coolest part.” Sit down and settle in at Birdie’s luxurious resort-style bar that connects the inside to the outside. Don’t worry if all of the seats are taken, because a second cocktail bar nearby has even more seating and a greater variety of drink options. Its margaritas are always top-shelf whether they’re frozen, skinny or spicy, while a selection of “Spritzies” is at your fingertips whether it’s Aperol, Hugo mint or sparkling mezcal paloma. Unconventional offerings are available at the martini bar such as the sour Pickle, the energizing Espresso and the Filthy Martini featuring bacon-stuffed olives. And if you’re looking for a libation that’s as sparkling as it is chilly, the Sauvignon Blanc Slushie offers its own take on the traditional froze. When it’s time to eat, Birdie’s has a wide scope of culinary delights that range from light and refreshing to hearty and filling. The lighter shares have something for everybody at the table whether it’s the spicy tuna wonton tacos, the mozzarella caprese or the bacon deviled eggs, while the Big Healthy Bowls are packed with fresh ingredients including salmon, portobello mushroom, quinoa and Mediterranean shrimp. You can never go wrong with a classic smash burger, fried chicken sandwich or chicken salad croissant, but if you’re looking for a twist on the traditional wrap, the Tikka Fried Chicken Wrap and Vegetarian Mushroom Gyro prove there’s always a new way to experience your favorite sandwiches. The homemade flatbreads are perfect for any pizza fan, whether you get pepperoni and bacon or fig and prosciutto. The roasted half chicken and flat iron steak are just the right size for the meat fan in your family, and be sure not to miss the juicy brisket tacos, which are slow-cooked over 48 hours and complemented with fried cheese and handmade flour tortillas. And with a new brunch menu rolling out in 2024, Birdie’s menu is going to grow even bigger and better. “We created a menu with offerings for every type of guest,” culinary director Stan Rodrigues says. “Whether you are looking for filling snacks, a lighter meal with a few surprising inspirations or just a new date night, Birdie’s has it all.”

Noodle Works Aims To Elevate Traditional Chinese Cuisine When Southlake craves Chinese cuisine, local AmericanChinese chains such as P.F. Changs and Panda Express help deliver savory goodness. But since Howard Wangs closed in 2021, there’s been a gap in high-end authentic Chinese food. Noodle Works is looking to fill that void by bringing traditional, hand-crafted meals inspired by Northeast China to Southlake’s ever-evolving foodie scene. “We want to bring more authentic Chinese food to local people,” says Joanna Zu, co-owner of the familyrun and operated restaurant. Characterized by its namesake, Noodle Works uses house-made dough to prepare all of its noodles, dumplings, bao and pot stickers for a taste and texture that bursts with every bite. A great choice for first-timers is the pan-fried pork scallion, a slightly crunchy dumpling filled with marinated meat and onion for a vibrant flavor profile. One of the most popular choices is the beef roll, consisting of spiced beef wrapped in a Sichuan scallion pancake with bean sprouts, cilantro and fresh greens. If you consider yourself a spice lover, the Kung Pao Chicken is the kick you need with fresh and dried chilies, as well as Sichuan peppercorns. Unlike orange chicken that could be swimming in sauce, Noodle Works’ Sesame Chicken is lightly battered and fried in an orange sauce and topped with sesame seeds, fusing flavors that don’t overpower each other. You won’t want to skip out on dessert either. Chef Jackie Fan introduced the Taro Pastry from his 30 years of experience cooking in New York, combining a bean paste and fried pastry to make for a simple sweetness that’s not too overindulgent. The Chocolate Bao is another must-try, consisting of a gooey, melt-in-yourmouth milk chocolate center that’s thinly fried and sugar-coated. It’s no secret that the Zu family successfully brought traditional Chinese to the community, but they take it a step further by putting guests at the center of the experience. “Some customers ask me ‘Let me try that,’ and they tell me it’s really different,” Joanna says. “I love that. It encourages me.”

STEM Instructor Helps Students Build Robots And Futures

hen robots are powering up, picking up objects and navigating through a complex course amongst the halls at Carroll ISD, there’s always a team of Dragons behind the controller. But behind those students is Leah Schwedler. As the lead instructor for Carroll ISD’s robotics program, Leah helps students design, build, program and control their own robots for local and global competitions. Now heading into her 10th year as Carroll ISD’s preeminent robotics expert, Leah looks forward to another season of Carroll robotics as her students prepare their return to the 2024 VEX World Championships.

WHEN I FIRST STARTED TEACHING… at Carroll ISD, I was actually planning to teach math. But shortly after my arrival, the STEM program was starting up, and I was getting more involved with robotics. My background is in mechanical engineering, so when I learned they were looking for an instructor, I got the certifications I needed and moved into teaching robotics. ROBOTICS IS ALL ABOUT… problem-solving. The students have a task in front of them, and they have to figure out a solution. Each challenge is different, but they all generally involve manipulating some sort of object and placing it in something. Sometimes there are barriers to overcome, and sometimes they have to launch objects or stack them together. It’s up to the students to build a robot to accomplish the goals they need to. WHAT I PARTICULARLY ENJOY ABOUT ROBOTICS IS… it isn’t so much teaching as much as it is facilitating. It’s my job to give students the tools they need, but it’s their responsibility to take those little bits of information and apply it to solve a task. It’s being a different type of educator, and I often find that I’m learning at the same time my students are. OUR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS DO A… classroom-style competition where they work in small groups and are given shorter tasks to accomplish. It’s all about learning how to make a claw, how to make your robot drive forward, how to make your robot turn. Once they’ve done that, they’ll move on to other

76 • JAN 24

more complex tasks such as making their robot play a game of soccer or do a ring toss. WHEN STUDENTS ENTER THEIR SECOND YEAR, THAT’S WHEN… they’re going to take everything they learned and put everything together. We have scheduled design reviews where we go over their progress. What is your schedule? What are your team roles? How are you keeping track of your goals? What’s the status of your code and design? It pushes them to get prepared for competition and to perform engineering at a higher level. MANY PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE THAT… there are so many entry-level ways to get into coding. You don’t have to have a high-level programming background to control a robot. Many students will use what they know in physics and calculus to get their robot from point A to point B as fast and accurately as it can. Even though some of our teams are using extremely complex algorithms, it’s also very possible to jump right in and make a robot drive forward. That pushes them to want to learn more — that’s what’s so great about robotics. ONE OF MY BIGGEST POINTS OF PRIDE IS… we’ve had at least one team compete at VEX World Championships since 2014. Only the top 2-5% of teams in the world qualify for the championships, and we’ve had teams compete every single year. Two years ago, we had nine teams compete at Worlds, which was the most of any single organization. We have consistently had competitive teams year after year, and I’m really proud that my kids can perform at that high of a level.
