The Men of Missouri Alpha
The mission of Phi Delta Theta is borne by the three cardinal principles of friendship, sound learning and moral rectitude. Helping every individual to meet his true potential is the bedrock of the fraternity. We celebrate each brother’s true self, learn from each other’s strengths and help overcome each other’s weaknesses. Rather than molding young men into some ideal, we take pride in each member’s uniqueness and empower every brother to exceed his personal expectations.
This list of names are undersigned in The Bond of Phi Delta Theta at Missouri Alpha.

EUGENE FIELD
Known as “the poet of childhood,” Eugene Field was a founding member of the Illinois Delta chapter at Knox College in 1871. A few months later, he transferred to the University of Missouri for his last two years of college and affiliated with Missouri Alpha. A journalist by trade, Field wrote for newspapers in St. Louis, St. Joseph, Kansas City, Denver and Chicago, penning clever columns of biting satire. His humorous Chicago Daily News column “Sharps and Flats” became a must-read for Chicagoans even as he skewered them with his wit. Yet despite his newspaper notoriety, Field is best known for the enormously popular poems he wrote that evoked the nostalgia of childhood, most famously in Wynken, Blynken, and Nod; Christmas Treasures; The Duel; Seein’ Things; and Little Boy Blue. Although Field died in 1895 at the age of 45, his prodigious volumes of poetry are still widely read today, earning him acclaim as the poet laureate of Phi Delta Theta. More than 35 elementary schools carry his name, as does a branch of the Denver Public Library; his St. Louis birthplace is a museum (dedicated by Mark Twain) and several cities have erected statues and other artwork inspired by his verse.

THOMAS JEFFERSON JACKSON SEE
Phi brothers had an inkling of T.J.J. See’s intellectual prowess back in 1889 — he was valedictorian of his graduating class and walked away with the Astronomy Medal as well. He then went to the University of Berlin to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics. Said to be one of only a dozen men who understood Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, See authored a plethora of papers detailing his controversial theories of binary stars, astrophysics and challenges to Einstein that he developed at the University of Chicago, Lowell Observatory in Arizona and the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. He spent 30 years in charge of the mathematics corps at the Navy’s Mare Island shipyard in California. Capt. See’s work there included treatises on wave theory, natural law, the origin of the solar system, the size of the Milky Way and the cause of sunspots and earthquakes. He retired when the Navy closed Mare Island in 1932. He died in 1962 at age 96.

GUY THOMPSON
A most versatile Phi, Guy Atwood Thompson had a finger in nearly every pot while at Mizzou. Football, baseball, Glee Club, literary societies and oratorical contests were all part of his repertoire. Thompson left MU in 1898 after earning bachelor’s and law degrees and joined a private law practice in St. Louis. He formed his own firm of Thompson, Mitchell, Thompson & Young in 1929 and it quickly grew to the largest law firm in Missouri; today, the firm is known as Thompson Coburn, with more than 380 attorneys and seven offices nationwide. A leader among lawyers, Thompson served as president of the American Bar Association in 1931-32. During his term, he presided over ceremonies for the laying of the cornerstone of the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington and launched the first statewide crime survey in the United States. As a trustee in bankruptcy of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, he engineered a reorganization in 1956 that brought the rail line out of bankruptcy after 23 years. Thompson died in 1958 at the age of 82.

JOUETTE SHOUSE
Phi Delta Theta welcomed some young ones into Missouri Alpha in the 1890s. Jouett Shouse, who entered college at the tender age of 15, signed The Bond when he was 16 and a sophomore at MU. The young scholar played tennis and excelled at oratory, a talent that would serve him well in his later years. Shouse gravitated to journalism, editing the university page in the Columbia Herald for Walter Williams (who would establish the world’s first journalism school at MU a decade or so later). He worked at the Lexington, Kentucky, Herald after college and edited the Kentucky Farmer and Breeder before a fateful trip to Kansas in 1911 ignited his passion for politics. Shouse won election to the Kansas Senate in 1912 and then set his sights on Congress, a difficult proposition for a Democrat in a predominantly Republican district. He won, though, and served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Shouse distinguished himself with work on federal farm loan legislation and supported President Woodrow Wilson’s defense measures in the lead-up to World War I. He bucked the entire Democratic Party leadership when he voted for establishing a military draft. Shouse is perhaps best known as the man who raised the Democrats up from the debacle of the 1928 election. Republican Herbert Hoover won the White House that year and the GOP carried the House and Senate as well. As chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 1929, he set to work lambasting Republicans at every turn and campaigning for Democrats running for Congress. Aided in his rhetoric by the economic collapse of 1929, Shouse and his Democrats turned the tide in the 1930 elections, paving the way for the party’s political control through the 1940s. Shouse broke with President Franklin Roosevelt and liberal Democrats over FDR’s New Deal policies. He headed up the American Liberty League until 1940, opposing Roosevelt policies that he felt were antibusiness. Shouse practiced law in Kansas City and Washington, D.C., and raised thoroughbred racehorses at his Wolf Trap Farm in Virginia. He died in 1968 at the age of 88. Part of Wolf Trap Farm is now the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.

CARL CROW
When globe-trotting correspondent Carl Crow arrived in Shanghai in 1911, he saw something that no one else did: a huge untapped market in the Far East. The journalist-turnedadman made China his home for 25 years, enjoying a front-row seat to watch the nascent stirrings of the world’s largest market. His books on the Far East provided a road map for doing business in Asia in the mid-20th century. Brother Crow spent two years at the University of Missouri, his education funded by the sale of the weekly newspaper he’d started as a teenager. As a student, he worked as a printer and served as a correspondent for newspapers in St. Louis, Kansas City and Chicago. He left MU without a degree in 1907 to manage several newspapers; a stint as associate city editor of the China Press landed him in Shanghai in 1911. He moved around Asia as a correspondent for newspapers and wire services. Crow opened the first Western advertising agency in China, known for its calendar advertisements and “China Girl” poster. Later, he founded the Shanghai Evening Post. He published his first book, The Travelers’ Handbook for China, in 1913. His most popular work, 400 Million Customers, which won a National Book Award as Most Original Book of 1937, provided insight into the vast Chinese market through a collection of humorous essays and anecdotes. All told, Crow published 15 books in his lifetime, 12 about Asia. He died in Manhattan in 1945. The University of Missouri published his 1939 diaries, The Long Road to Burma, in 2009.

ROBERT CARY
Before Adm. Robert Webster Cary Jr. was one of the most decorated officers in the history of the U.S. Navy, he was a Phi. Cary entered the University of Missouri in 1908 and signed The Bond with Missouri Alpha his freshman year. Midway through his sophomore year, he heeded the call of duty and transferred to the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1914. Less than a year later, Cary was on his first duty assignment as an ensign on the USS San Diego when the first of five boilers exploded in the firerooms. As the escaping steam engulfed the room, Cary stopped and held open the fireroom doors that were being closed electrically from the bridge. He yelled to the men in the fireroom to escape as he held the doors; three did. His steely nerve and coolness in the face of danger kept the men in another fireroom at their posts tending other boilers until Cary could direct them to safety in a bunker. For his heroism in saving the lives of those sailors, Cary was awarded the Medal of Honor. Cary held several commands on destroyers during World War I. When a depth charge broke loose from the fantail of the USS Sampson during a hurricane, Cary and three others worked to secure it and were nearly washed overboard in the storm. All four received the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism. In World War II, Cary commanded the USS Savannah and USS Brooklyn, seeing action in the South Atlantic and the Mediterranean. He survived a bombing of the Savannah in the landing at Salerno and waged combat in Sicily and Anzio. He received five Legions of Merit for his actions in Italy as well as the Distinguished Service Order from Great Britain. Hospitalized for injuries after Anzio, Cary spent the rest of the war in command of the Navy’s training and distribution centers at Treasure Island near San Francisco. He retired as a rear admiral in 1946. Cary’s other service decorations included the World War I Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, EuropeanAfrican-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze service stars and the World War II Victory Medal. He died in 1967 at the age of 76.

R. Crosby Kemper
The first of the three Kemper brothers to pledge Phi Delta Theta at Mizzou, Rufus Crosby Kemper ran track and starred at guard and tackle on the Tiger football team. A 1914 graduate of MU, Crosby served in the infantry in France during World War I. Upon his return, he took over City Center Bank, which his father, William T. Kemper, had purchased during the war. Crosby proved a master businessman, leading the expansion of the small local bank into a financial enterprise of national standing in the 40 years he served as president. His innovations such as drive-through deposit windows and motor banks inside parking garages earned the bank, renamed City National, the reputation as “America’s Most UpTo-Date Bank.” Crosby stepped down as president in 1959 but remained as chairman of the board until 1967. He died in 1972 at the age of 80. In 1974 Kemper Arena was named in his honor (renovated in 2017, the venue is now known as Hy-Vee Arena).
James M. Kemper
The second son of Kansas City financier William T. Kemper, James Madison Kemper was a Phi Delt and a football player at MU. Graduating in 1916, he enlisted in the Air Service in World War I, stationed in France. After the war, he became president of his father’s recently purchased City Center Bank but resigned after a month; brother Crosby Kemper took control of City Center. James went to work at Commerce Trust Co. and rose to president of the bank by the time he was 32, one of the youngest presidents of a large bank in the country. He became chairman of the board in 1939, where he remained until 1964. In 1944, he helped establish Midwest Research Institute. James directed the construction of Commerce Tower in 1965, which was the tallest commercial building in Missouri at the time. He died in 1965 at the age of 70.
William T. Kemper Jr.
The youngest Kemper brother, William Thornton Kemper Jr. carried his father’s name and the family penchant for banking. William followed his brothers to Mizzou and Phi Delta Theta. Active in Scabbard and Blade and Kappa Beta Phi, he graduated from MU in 1925. By the time William was 25 years old, he was president of three banks. He remained president of First National Bank of Independence until his retirement in 1978. He also served as president of Kemper Investment Co., which he formed with his father and brothers, and led the Missouri Bankers Association in 1938 and 1939. Known for his immaculate fashion sense, William was named one of the 20 bestdressed men in America in 1939 by the National Association of Merchant Tailors. He died in 1989 at age 86. The William T. Kemper Foundation, established after his death, focuses gifts on education, human services, civic improvement and the arts.

HOWARD A. RUSK
Like many Phis, Howard Rusk wanted to do his bit when the United States entered World War II. The 1923 MU graduate left his successful St. Louis medical practice to enlist in the Army Air Forces in 1942, assigned to Jefferson Barracks as chief medical officer. Within months, Rusk began addressing what he saw as oddities in accepted recovery procedures — why soldiers, once over the acute stages of illness or injury, were left to languish in hospital beds rather than prepare for return to duty, fit and ready to serve. Rusk started a program of rehabilitation that encompassed physical exercise, skills training, classes, marches, drills and hikes. Men recovered quicker, spent less time in the hospital and returned to their units fit for duty. Rusk’s program spread to 200 hospitals with remarkable success and then through all military branches; he became director of the Army Air Forces Convalescent and Rehabilitation Services and consulted with the Veterans Administration on organizing a postwar veterans rehabilitation program. After the war, Rusk wrote a medical column for the New York Times and served as chairman of the New York University medical school’s Department of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine. He founded the Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at NYU, which offered pioneering treatment for disabled patients. A 1970 study showed 83% of quadriplegics in Rusk’s program had returned to productive lives within three years. In 1974, the University of Missouri named its rehabilitation center in Columbia after him. Rusk died in 1989 at the age of 88.

CHARLES W. DIGGES
Columbia native Charlie Digges grew up near the corner of Providence and Burnam roads, just a stone’s throw from where the Phi Delta Theta chapter house would one day stand. Kismet, perhaps. Digges followed his older brother Sam in joining Missouri Alpha when he entered the University of Missouri. He graduated with a business degree in 1940 and served as a bomber pilot in World War II and the Korean War. Between his military service stints, he joined RollinsVandiver Insurance Agency, which added his name to the company in the 1950s. The agency merged with Conley Myers Agency in 1983 to become The Insurance Group, where Digges served as president until his retirement in 1993. Digges actively supported his alma mater and the local community, serving as president of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Rotary Club and the Tiger Quarterback Club. In 1986, the chamber named him Outstanding Citizen of Columbia. Digges died in 2019 at the age of 100. His son, Charles W. Digges Jr. ’71, is also a Missouri Alpha Phi Delt.

J. SIDNEY ROLLINS
Missouri Alpha Phi Delts have James Sidney Rollins to thank for their chapter house’s prime location near the Mizzou campus. Brother Rollins ’10 once owned the four acres in the Grasslands where the house at 101 E. Burnam Road was built in 1956. Rollins, whose grandfather and namesake James S. Rollins was known as “the father of the University of Missouri,” signed The Bond at Missouri Alpha in 1905. Admitted to the bar in 1911, he was assistant prosecuting attorney for Boone County until 1916, when he began serving in the Army through World War I. Elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1920, Rollins served five terms in the House before joining the state Senate in 1930. He served two terms in the Senate before retiring in 1939. Active in local affairs, Rollins was the first president of the Boone County Historical Society after its founding in 1924. He served on the Columbia City Council from 1946 to 1948. His son, James S. Rollins Jr. ’46 (“Jim Sid” to his Phi brothers) was also a Missouri Alpha.

WARREN E. HEARNES
Missouri Alpha’s legacy of leaders includes one governor: Warren Eastman Hearnes, the 46th governor of Missouri. Hearnes attended the University of Missouri for a year and a half but left when he was drafted. Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he graduated with the Class of 1946. He returned to MU for law school after his military discharge, receiving his degree in 1952. While in law school, Hearnes won election to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1950 and served as majority floor leader his last two terms. The St. Louis Globe-Democrat presented Hearnes with its 1958 Award for Meritorious Service as “the most effective House member in debate.” In 1960, he trained his eyes on statewide office, winning election as Secretary of State. Three years later the American Heritage Foundation honored him with its Outstanding Citizenship Award for leadership in working for modernization of election laws. Hearnes was elected governor in 1964. A 1965 amendment to the Missouri Constitution permitted governors to succeed themselves to serve two consecutive terms and Hearnes was the first to take advantage of the new law when he ran for reelection in 1968. Hearnes served briefly as a circuit court judge in 1980, which made him the first person in Missouri history to serve in all three branches of the state government. Hearnes died in 2009 at the age of 86. The Hearnes Center, a multipurpose arena at the University of Missouri, bears his name, as does the Warren E. Hearnes Learning Resource Center at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph and Hearnes Hall, the main administration building at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.

THOMAS E. ATKINS III
Called the “cornerstone” of Missouri Alpha, Tom Atkins joined Phi Delta Theta in 1952. It completed his life, he said, and was where he made some of his best friends. In college he worked at the Stein Club, his father’s downtown Columbia bar, and served as The Scroll reporter for the chapter while still managing to make the cut for Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. After graduating with a degree in accounting in 1956, Atkins served in the Army and then returned to his hometown to work in the Atkins family business, a conglomeration of companies offering building maintenance, pest control, grounds maintenance and irrigation. By 1971, he was sole owner of the business and set about merging the companies into Atkins Building Services and Products as the company grew from five employees to more than 350. He and his son, Scott, extended their business interests to real estate development and restoration of several historic properties in Columbia. Atkins was the pay-it-forward type who gave extensively to his community: president of the university Board of Curators, chairman of the Columbia College Board of Trustees, United Way, numerous MU Health Care initiatives, a Faurot Fellow and lifetime member of the Mizzou Alumni Association. He gave extensively to Missouri Alpha ventures, most recently as a significant contributor to the chapter house renovation project, for which he served as honorary campaign chairman. Atkins died in 2020 at the age of 86.

BRUCE BECKETT
The first wave of baby boomers arrived on the Mizzou campus in the mid-’60s, and so did Bruce Beckett. Initiated in 1966, Beckett represented Missouri Alpha on the Interfraternity Council and served as the council’s treasurer. After graduation in 1969, Beckett joined the Marines and served in Vietnam, rising to the rank of captain. After his service, he returned to MU for law school, where he was a member of Missouri Law Review, receiving his Juris Doctor in 1975. Beckett is an “of counsel” attorney with Smith Lewis, Columbia’s oldest law firm, where he specializes in corporate, real estate and banking/finance law. He is a past president of the Boone County Bar Association and a permanent trustee of the State Historical Society of Missouri. Beckett is a significant supporter of the Phi Delta Theta Foundation and was intimately involved in the 2016 renovation project of Missouri Alpha’s chapter house, serving as campaign chairman. His sons Adam, Matthew, Daniel and Andrew are also Missouri Alpha Phi Delts, and they each also followed in their father’s footsteps by serving in the Marine Corps. Carrying on the Beckett family’s legacy of support for the Missouri Alpha chapter, each son has given of his time for the chapter by serving on the advisory board or house corporation.

JOHN L. CARTER
The bond is strong in John Carter’s family — his father, brother and son are all proud Phis. Carter signed The Bond at Missouri Alpha in 1983 and graduated in 1985 with a degree in business administration and finance. As the fast-paced financial world beckoned in the mid-’80s, Carter built a career in wealth management at Kidder Peabody, UBS and Prudential Financial before joining Nationwide Financial in 2005. Since 2019, Carter has been president and chief operating officer of Nationwide, overseeing the Fortune 100 company’s retirement, life insurance and annuity products and mutual funds business operations from the company’s headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. Carter is a prominent advocate for retirement security, speaking frequently on industry issues in Washington and serving on the boards of the American Council of Life Insurers and the Insured Retirement Institute. At Mizzou, he is on the advisory board of the Center for Sales and Customer Development, which prepares future leaders in sales and customer development. Brother Carter gives back to Phi Delta Theta in many ways. A Phi Delta Theta Foundation trustee, he is also a member of the True Blue Society, Founder’s Club, Cornerstone Club and Sword & Shield Society. He provided significant support to Missouri Alpha’s “Proud to Be a Phi” fundraising campaign for the 2016 renovation of the chapter house. During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, he reached out to fellow Phis on Facebook, urging them to support their brothers and noting the resources the Phi Delta Theta Foundation offers to students, business owners and alumni.

BRAD BOSWELL
As sturdy as the oaks his company crafts barrels from, Brad Boswell’s support of Phi Delta Theta has been a stalwart of Missouri Alpha since he signed The Bond in 1990. After graduating with an industrial engineering degree, Boswell returned to the family business, Independent Stave Co., and became CEO in 2017. Boswell is the fourth generation to run the 110-year-old company, which is the world’s largest barrel manufacturer with facilities on six continents supplying wineries, breweries and distilleries around the world. His tenure has been marked by expansion and technological innovations in the industry and active service in the Associated Cooperage Industries of America and the World Association of Alcohol Beverage Industries. He was inducted into the Bourbon Hall of Fame in 2008. Boswell lives in Columbia and is a significant supporter of Phi Delta Theta, particularly Missouri Alpha. JAMES BURST III
Phi Delta Theta is a tradition in the Burst family. James Burst Sr., Washington University ’44, set the trend for his family at Missouri Gamma chapter, where he was president. Jon Burst ’81 followed in the bond, joining Missouri Alpha as a Mizzou undergrad. When James’ grandson and Jon’s nephew, James Burst III, arrived at Mizzou, he too joined Missouri Alpha in 2011. Burst took on multiple leadership roles at Missouri Alpha before becoming chapter president in 2013. An accounting major, he was Beta Gamma Sigma and interned at Brown Smith Wallace. He graduated No. 1 in his class with a master’s degree in accounting in 2015. A CPA, Burst worked as a business tax services associate for two years at KPMG St. Louis before entering law school at Washington University in St. Louis, finishing in the top 5% of his class. He is now entering his legal career as a corporate associate at Lewis Rice LLC. Since graduation Burst has remained close to Missouri Alpha; he has given considerable time back to the chapter recently by serving on the board for Missouri Alpha’s 150th anniversary capital campaign.
