Haibun
Wed
Awayfromthe poundingdance rhythms of the adjoining building, the father of the bride, inneedof a moment alone, retreats fromthe reception. Recallingsome things left inthe backof the churchhe walks backto gather some of the refreshments for the bridalparty. As he reenters the sanctuaryfromthe vestibule he hears an in-law caressingthe keys of the grandpiano The room is filledbyone musician. Improvisingonmelodies,he explores the ranges of this masterfullycrafted instrument. Cherishingeachkeystroke he pauses to appreciate the acoustics of the room. He stops just longenoughtoreflect onhis next move. He dreams another moment andreturns toplay.
silence fills spaces Steinwayandsons graces sacredplaces
The pianohas a signthat reads donot touchbut he does not feelthe needtoaskfor forgiveness for this euphonic moment. Recountingthe experiences, the followingday, the musiciansmiles andmentions how wonderfulit was toplayvariations onAmazingGrace.
