Heat Pump Myths Busted By
Mike Holmes

Switching to a heat pump might be a great solution for your home. We have been installing heat pumps on our jobs for a few years now.
If you live in an area where electricity is affordable, installing a heat pump can be a great option. As heat pumps are gaining popularity, there are some myths we are coming across as well. Here are the common heat pump myths busted.
MYTH: Heat Pumps Are Just for Heating
Fact: A heat pump is fully reversible. Heat pumps heat AND cool your home. My recommendation is Bosch’s Inverter Ducted Split (IDS) systems.
MYTH: Heat Pumps Only Work in Warm Climates
Fact: Cold climate heat pumps work in temperatures as low as -30°C. Backup heating systems also run cost effectively and will keep your home warm on the coldest days. There are new models of heat pumps designed to
handle the cold winters, like the new Bosch IDS Ultra Cold Climate Heat Pumps.
MYTH: Having a heat pump will increase my energy bill.
Fact: Heat pumps use less energy than traditional equipment to heat and cool your home. Heat pumps move heat rather than generate heat. This makes them very energy efficient. In fact, a heat pump can reduce your electricity consumption by 50% compared to electric resistance heating such as furnaces or baseboard heaters (according to the US Department of Energy).
I recommend looking into sources of heat loss in your home first. Check your windows and doors for air leaks.
Address these issues first before buying a heat pump. You may end up needing a smaller heat pump size!
