New Victoria is a Blackletter typeface with a modern twist: Similar to its predecessors, New Victoria can be hard to read at smaller sizes due to its tall and narrow characters. However, it retains readability because of the lack of overtly ornamental, complex characters, and curved strokes. In lieu of these features, the abrupt and angled transitions between strokes (seen throughout the type), provide a cleaner and modern aesthetic that complements the heavy vertical stress (most prominent with the lowercase letters c and o) and significant differences between thick and thin strokes (use of hairline and heavy-handed strokes) characteristic of Blackletter type first introduced by Johannes Gutenberg with his 42-line Bible in the 15th century.

New Victoria has heavy vertical stress, which places pressure on the vertical axis of letters like the lowercase o, resulting in thick vertical strokes and thin diagonal strokes. New Victoria has finials on some lowercase letters (see the lowercase e and c ). However, instead of being curved or tapered ends, they are sharp and angled for a modern aesthetic. New Victoria uses hairline strokes throughout the typeface to accentuate the significant differences between thick and thin strokes. Hairline strokes connect to thick strokes.
