Joy, pride and passion. These were the emotions felt on Sunday 10th at the Juan Gambero Culebra football pitch in Las Lagunas when CP Mijas-Las Lagunas lifted the trophy in front of their fans. Although the celebrations began on Wednesday 6th, when the team became champions with a 0-0 draw in the Melilla-Motril match, it was on Sunday that the real party started for the Las Lagunas side and their supporters, who waited for José Antonio García’s men to return from the city of the Alhambra after playing their final league match against Granada B, a game that ended 4-4, although the result no longer mattered.

The Mijas Town Hall, through its Civil Protection department, will hold a technical conference on the 28th of May focusing on the integration of drone units into emergency services and law enforcement agencies. Particular attention will be paid to the creation of specialist operators and the administrative and operational management required for

This multicultural event will bring together live music, international gastronomy, and traditional dances from various countries. The festival, organised by the Asociación Cubanos Unidos in collaboration with the Town Hall, will run from 12:00 to midnight. It will feature cultural and gastronomic representatives from eleven countries, including Argentina, the Netherlands, Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Uruguay, Spain, Peru, Chile, Italy and Japan, with a special collaboration from Senegal featuring various performances.

For four days, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy musical performances, folklore exhibitions,

their implementation.

The conference will take place at the Las Lagunas Employment Promotion Building and is aimed at both emergency services and security forces wishing to set up a drone unit, as well as professionals and organisations requiring technical guidance on the subject.

The councillor for Civil Protection at the Mijas Town Hall, Francisco Jerez (Vox), explai-

ned that drones are no longer a tool of the future, “but a very useful resource in real emergency, search, prevention and operational coordination situations”. In this regard, he noted that “with this conference, we want to help more public services take the step of incorporating these technologies with every guarantee and in accordance with current regulations”.

currently consist of constructing a riprap wall prior to the new piling for the walkway structure. “We have come here today to check on the good pace of work on this project and also to address other issues that we will be taking note of to ensure the summer season is the best yet in Mijas”, said the mayoress, who recalled that “a collapse occurred and emergency action

Once the ground on which the structure stands has been stabilised, wooden piles will be driven to a depth of two metres below sea level and four metres in height. “Work is currently underway to create a chain of riprap, which will serve as the foundation for the piles.

Piling is being carried out in the area, something that has never been done before, to strengthen this section”, stated the councillor for Beaches.

Workers are now using dumper trucks and excavators along a 160-metre stretch of this sec-

tion of the Coastal Path. It should be noted that this work was the subject of an emergency contract awarded by the Infrastructure Department, given the need for both this section and the Las Mimosas wall to be repaired as soon as possible.

The Department for Senior Citizens at the Mijas Town Hall has put out to public tender the organisation of a trip to the coast of Cádiz, which will benefit 1,600 senior citizens from the municipality. The aim, according to the government team, is for these residents of Mijas to enjoy an activity framed within active ageing.

The technical specifications stipulate that interested companies must submit a travel plan setting out the proposed dates and timetables, with sufficient prior information

regarding the itinerary. The scheduled excursions must include cultural and leisure content. Furthermore, three excursions will be organised, including admission to museums, wineries, monuments, shows and parks, each lasting half a day. The first two proposals are excursions to Chipiona and Jerez, while the third must be proposed by the bidding company. Transport will be by coach, equipped with all necessary services.

The Town Hall reports that the new programme “includes significant new features that further enrich the educational and cultural offering”. Among these, the ‘Digital Image and Sound’ workshop stands out, an “innovative initiative” that introduces students to the audiovisual world from a practical and creative perspective, exploring photography, video and cinematic narrative using modern technological tools.

The event will feature the Coro de Santiago, who will provide entertainment for the evening with a selection of songs.

Furthermore, just like last year, the Peña Caballista de Mijas will accompany the Virgin on the journey to El Esparragal, they will also present their poster for 2026 on the same day, with the aim of encouraging riders to take part in traditional dress.

The brotherhood also invites all local residents to attend the poster presentation to discover first-hand what has been prepared for this journey and meeting with the faithful, which will take place on 31st of May.

The regional delegate for Education of the Junta, Miguel Briones; the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor responsible for education in Mijas, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), visited the school to see the students’ work first-hand. “I found it fascinating; firstly, because of the intensity and commitment evident in each of the students taking part in this year’s fair, and secondly, because of the chance to see and learn firsthand about their projects, how they materialise them and how they explain them”, said Briones.

For her part, the mayoress cited the example of Carlos Huesa, a researcher with roots in Mijas who works at the Department of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital. “We are fortunate to have teachers at the school who encourage these aspirations and interests in our young people, showing them the wide range of opportunities offered by science and technology”, said Mata, adding that “this allows students to start creating and becoming aware of all the possibilities that exist in scientific development”.

During the week of the 11th of May, IES Sierra de Mijas held its 13th Science and Technology Fair, which this year focused primarily on science and health, featuring the participation of around 200 students and 16 teachers from various departments.

According to the school, the aim of this event is to address the themes in a practical and interdisciplinary manner, making the students the true protagonists of the process. To showcase the more than 50 projects, the school gym hosted 36 stands organised into twelve thematic areas, including genetic engineering, computing and robotics, and the effects of sport.

Foreign nationals will not vote in the elections to the

Mijas has an election date this Sunday, 17th of May, as the Andalusian Parliamentary elections take place; however, the foreign population does not vote in these elections. They will be eligible to do so in the next municipal elections, which will be held next year to determine the composition of local councils.

This Sunday 17th, polling stations will be open from 9:00 to 20:00 hours. In Mijas, 51,509 Spanish nationals are called to the polls. For this electoral process, a total of 18 polling stations will open across the municipality, comprising 41 sections and 73 polling tables.

The opening ceremony, which took place at its premises in the Urbanoria building, at 1 Calle de la Noria, was attended by the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP), who highlighted the importance of this type of service in a municipality where “more than 40% of the resident population is foreign”. The councillor emphasised that the firm’s arrival is not intended to compete with banks or financial institutions, but rather to offer a complementary service.

Finally, Bravo welcomed the group and wished Skybound “every success” in this new phase.

“From the Town Hall we views this investment favourably, not only in terms of money, but also in terms of human capital and staff specialising in financial investments”, the councillor concluded.

‘Espacio Cultural’ Association to hold its Vyshyvanka Festival and Borscht Party from 22nd to 24th C.B. The Ukrainian-Spanish Association ‘Espacio Cultural’ and the ‘Familia Unida’ Ukrainian Cultural Centre are joining forces once again for a great cause: to strengthen cultural ties with the local community on the Costa del Sol and to showcase two of Ukraine’s greatest cultural treasures: Vyshyvanka (a traditional embroidered shirt of profound identity value) and Borscht (the iconic beetroot soup recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO).

From the 22nd to the 24th of May, they will host a cultural gathering at their premises to showcase this Ukrainian heritage.

Attendees will be able to enjoy a programme featuring traditional cuisine, a craft fair, workshops, as well as the main line-up of concerts and a parade of ethnic costumes, taking place on Saturday 23rd of May at 20:00 hours. The event will have a charitable focus..

During the festival, an auction and a raffle will be organised, with the funds raised going towards the development and maintenance of this centre.
