Networking Event gathers around thirty companies This international event focused on the challenges companies face in terms of growth and the development of new projects Jacobo Perea / Alicia Moreno

Last Tuesday, 22nd September, Mijas hosted the 3rd Costa del Sol International Business Networking Event at El Chaparral Golf Club; a forum for companies, professionals and entrepreneurs to connect, share experiences and generate new business opportunities, organised by the Foreigners Department, headed by councillor Mario Bravo (PP), and networking groups from the Costa del Sol. The event focused on the challenges faced by international companies when it comes to growing and developing new businesses in the area. “The aim is to bring together various businesses on the Costa del Sol; they all share a common interest, which is to continue making progress, and common problems, such as a lack of funding, bureaucratic delays and other issues that some of us politicians are trying to resolve”, explained Bravo. Professionals and entrepreneurs value this type of initiative. “It’s very important because there are more and more international com-

panies in the Technology Park, and what we do is bring them to events of this kind, which are held in English, because almost everything organised in Málaga for the general public is in Spanish; here, they feel a little more comfortable speaking English to do business”, explained Sandra García, head of international projects at Bic Euronova and recently appointed honorary consul of Norway. For her part, Lucía Melgarejo, wealth management adviser at BlackTower Financial Management, emphasised that “the end of summer is a time for local busines-

ses to connect and reconnect; there are always start-ups and people who need support or assistance, but above all, it’s about synergies and collaboration”.

The Norwegian tourism market is one of the most significant on the Costa del Sol, with around 250,000 visitors I.P./A.M. On Monday 21st, Sandra García Torres was introduced as the new honorary consul of Norway for the provinces of Málaga, Granada and Cádiz. The event took place in the gardens of the Picasso Museum in Málaga and was attended by officials from across the province, including the president of the Málaga Provincial Council, Francisco Salado; the mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre; the Norwegian ambassador, Lars Andersen; and, representing Mijas Town Hall, the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP). Members of the Norwegian Church in Calahonda also attended the event. Among García’s first official engagements was the event held on Tuesday 22nd at the El Chaparral Golf Club in Mijas, which hosted the 3rd Costa del Sol Networking Event, organised by Mijas’ Foreigners Department and local networking groups. As she explained, her profession is closely linked to the role she will now play as consul, “because my work

mainly consists of supporting international companies and collaborating with other countries, so from now on I will focus all my efforts on those Norwegian companies wishing to come to Málaga to set up a new business or invest in the province”, she emphasised. The Norwegian tourism market is one of the most significant on the Costa del Sol; in fact, nearly 250,000 Norwegians choose this destination every year, according to Málaga Provincial Council. Furthermore, around 2,500 have already taken up residence in the province of Málaga, of whom 444 live in Mijas, noted the councillor for Foreigners. “Just today, while speaking with the Norwegian ambassador, I told him that the Costa del Sol is like Florida for Norwegians, because they see that life here is good, that the climate is quite pleasant and that, moreover, there are business opportunities, so our province is a wonderful place for everything”, the consul concluded.

Mijas welcomes

representatives of the German Economic Forum in Andalusia

During the meeting, the mayoress and the councillor for Foreigners learned how the German dual vocational training system works Editorial Department

Mijas Town Hall welcomed “with great interest” the visit from the Deutsches Wirtschaftsforum Andalusien (German Economic Forum in Andalusia), represented by its president, Fernando Frühbeck; the vice-president, Tomás Perez Benz; and the secretary, Carmen Soto. “The main purpose was to discuss the German Dual Vocational Training model, as explained by Malte Schmuck, academic director of FEDA Madrid German Business School”, stated the councillor for the Foreigners Department in Mijas, Mario Bravo (PP), who was present at the meeting alongside

the mayoress of the municipality, Ana Mata (PP). The German dual vocational training model is a system “that is widely established and boasts an employment rate of over 90 per cent”, added the councillor, noting that it is also being delivered in Spain through FEDA Madrid. “In Málaga, for example, the second cohort of the Hotel Management vocational course has just begun”, said the councillor. Educational model Established in 1969, it is the educational model chosen by over 60 per cent of young Germans and has become a success story due to the high rate of employment placement

in participating companies (sometimes exceeding 90%), the councillor explained in a press release, adding that “there are many key differences compared to the model we are familiar with in Spain”. “The first is the direct involvement of companies, to the extent that responsibility ddoes not lie with regional departments or the ministry, but with the chambers of commerce, which are the bodies that award the qualification. This ensures a perfect alignment between the training on offer and the demands of the labour market”, added Bravo. The councillor also noted that another distinguishing feature is the

course workload, which is divided into 35 per cent theoretical content and 65 per cent practical work. Furthermore, companies are directly involved in designing the course content, and throughout the twoyear training programme, students undertake internships in all departments of the companies, which facilitates their integration into the firm. In addition, companies assign

mentors who support and engage with the students throughout this period, and the results are assessed by a committee independent of the training centre. “The economic model is also a key factor; it promotes public-private partnership and enables students not only to have free access to high-quality education, but also to receive a stipend and contribute to social security from day one. Thanks to this model, young people can access training regardless of their financial circumstances”, said Bravo. “It is about shifting the culture from that of interns to that of apprentices. Efforts have also had to be made to clarify that the aim is not to create a workforce for abroad, but rather to provide highquality qualifications so that they

can develop their professional careers here in our region”, explained the councillor for Foreigners. “This project goes beyond simply organising a training programme: it involves forging a partnership between the Andalusian business community and the German business community in Spain. The German Chamber of Commerce in Spain, comprising more than 1,000 companies (many of which are global leaders in their sectors), is responsible for accrediting the qualifications, and its members form part of the management team at FEDA Madrid (Stihl, Siemens, Transfesa, Aerzen, etc.) alongside the German Embassy in Spain. It is therefore a unique opportunity for Mijas that we cannot let slip by”, concluded the councillor.

Mijas spends 210,000 euros repairing damage caused by wild boars in gardens

Councillor Daniel Gómez Teruel / I.P.

The council has allocated this money this year for repairs

Report by Ed. Dept. and Irene Pérez / Design: Carmen Martín

The Parks and Gardens Department at Mijas Town Hall has spent over 210,000 euros since the start of the year on repairs, replanting and labour in the municipality’s urban green spaces due to a surge in wild boars. These animals destroy gardens in their constant search for food, forcing the department to deploy equipment and staff daily to repair the damage. This was announced on Tuesday 22nd by the councillor responsible for the department, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), who explained that 16 workers are tasked each day with assessing the damage caused by the animals and restoring the gardens. This work is vital from both an aesthetic and environmental

perspective, as the animals’ voracity also destroys technical irrigation systems, which must be replaced to ensure the plants’ survival. “Four gardeners in Mijas Pueblo, four in La Cala, and eight in Las Lagunas are responsible daily for repairing what sounders of wild boars destroy every night across numerous parts of the municipality”, explained the councillor. In addition, there

are weekend duty shifts. Plants, growing media, irrigation system components, water consumption and labour are the main items accounting for this 210,000euro expenditure since January. According to figures provided by Gómez Teruel and the director of Parks and Gardens, Diego González, the damage caused by wild boars is equally widespread across all three urban centres, with particular severity in urban

Wild boars also prefer the loose, damp soil of newly laid flowerbeds with ornamental plants. They also dig up lawns, destroying them while searching for irrigation systems, which

they break to get water, causing flooding, water pipe bursts, the destruction of entire plantations, and extensive property damage. Another of their habits involves digging up earth to create large hollows, which they fill with water from irrigation pipes, “and these occur so frequently that the damage has barely been repaired before they destroy them again”, reported Gómez.

A HISTORIC

CELEBRATION OF GRATITUDE Tourist Day has been part of Mijas’s tourism calendar for many years and is a day to recognise the visitors who come to the municipality each season. The celebration combines elements closely linked to local identity and the local tourism offering, such as flamenco, gastronomy and crafts. The Tourism Department emphasises that it continues to work on promoting Mijas “as a destination capable of offering experiences all year round, capitalising on the diversity of its attractions and the unique character of a municipality that combines the coast, nature, culture, gastronomy, golf and one of the most recognisable white villages on the Costa del Sol”.

On Wednesday 23rd, Mijas celebrated its traditional Tourist Day with an event organised by the Town Hall, through the Department of Tourism, in Plaza Virgen de la Peña in Mijas Pueblo. Flamenco, gastronomy and crafts came together in a celebration through which the municipality recognises the importance of those who choose Mijas as their destination. The programme began at 12:00 with a flamenco show, followed, from 13:30, by free paella and sangria. The event also coincided with the traditional craft market held every Wednesday in the square. The councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), highlighted the significance of this event for Mijas and its economy. “We are a predominantly tourist-oriented municipality on the Costa del Sol, and a very significant part of our economic and business fabric depends on

this sector. That is why it is important to celebrate this day and thank our visitors for continuing to choose Mijas as their destination”, he said. Jerez also emphasised that one of the main objectives of the Tourism Department is to extend tourism activity beyond the summer months. “The challenge lies particularly in the winter: we want our hotels, restaurants, taxis, shops and golf courses to remain active outside the peak season as well, because many jobs and a fundamental part of the municipality’s

economy depend on this”, he explained. For his part, the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP), recalled that “Mijas’s progress would be inconceivable without the growth of tourism since the 1960s” and highlighted its impact on the economy and employment. “There are many of those tourists who one day decided to stay here with us”, he noted. As he explained, “there are already 40,000 people in Mijas who once arrived as tourists and now live among us”.

On Monday 21st September, AFA Mijas marked World Alzheimer’s Day by reading out the manifesto drawn up by the Spanish Confederation of Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias (CEAFA) outside the Town Hall. Joining the association’s representatives were the ma-

yoress, Ana Mata (PP), members of the government team and opposition councillors. The associations therefore took the opportunity to call, through the manifesto, for the first drug capable of slowing the progression of the disease to be marketed after 525 days, as it was on 15th April 2025 that the European Commission approved it.

ART

The Mijas Arts Centre hosts ‘Transformation’ by Karen Brinck M.F. Attending and, above all, taking part in the opening of the exhibition ‘Transformation’ by the Danish artist, sculptor and designer Karen Brinck, will be a true experience for all five senses. The exhibition will open to the public on Monday 28th at 18:00 at the Mijas Arts Centre. Se-

veral paintings will be repainted and transformed live throughout the exhibition. It will thus be an interactive installation where, in the artist’s own words, “Anything is possible”. During the exhibition, Brinck invites all visitors, children and adults alike, to add a small canvas in their favourite co-

‘No’ is no longer an answer Under the slogan ‘No is no longer an answer’, the Spanish confederation, of which the Mijas group is a member, condemns the “apathy and passivity” of the Interministerial Commission on Medicines Pricing following the approval of two new innovative treatments for Alzheimer’s. Its president, María Rosario Cabello, explained

that “our slogan this year is ‘No is no longer an answer’ because we believe we need medication now. A great deal of research is being carried out into Alzheimer’s which has yielded results; there are some drugs that have been shown to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s in its early stages, and what we want is for these medicines to be available on the National Health Service”. From the lectern, Cabello called for the following: “that approved treatments be funded without further delay; that the right to decide, together with healthcare professionals, whether or not we wish to receive them be respected; that all autonomous communities have the necessary resources to provide them on an equitable basis; that no one should be excluded on financial grounds or because of where they live; that the authorities stop postponing decisions; and that innovation reaches people while it can still make a difference”. Institutional support Standing alongside her was the mayoress of Mijas, showing her support and stating that “we at Mijas Town Hall will always stand by this association, which does such excellent work and which, thanks to all these therapies and support services, brings relief to many families from a suffering that science seems to be proving, day by day, can be overcome”. The councillor for Social Inclusion, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), also pointed out that “it is very important to carry out research, but if we do not then provide the financial support required, it is all for nothing. What they are asking

An interactive exhibition in which the Danish artist will invite visitors to transform it live lour. “Together, the canvases will form part of a special installation created by everyone”, adds the artist, so “everyone is invited to take part”. And judging by what the Danish artist has already re-

vealed in her invitation, it will be an abstract exhibition dominated by colour and freedom of expression. You can find out more about the artist, who is also a teacher, at www.karenbrinck.dk.

for is access to these medicines to try to improve their quality of life and slow the progression of the disease. We at the Town Hall are calling on the Government to take action, to pay for these medicines and make them available to those who really need them”. The deputy mayor and PMP spokesperson at the Town Hall, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), praised the work of AFA Mijas and stated that “Alzheimer’s does not only affect the person who receives the diagnosis; it affects the whole family, those who care for, support and stand by that person every day, which is why it is so important to raise the profile of this disease, to continue raising awareness and, above all, to support the families living with it”. For their part, several PSOE councillors also expressed their support for the Mijas-based association. “As one would expect, we are getting involved and offering our support to help and do our bit to continue raising awareness of these diseases. We would like to thank all the associations for the work they do and, finally, we wish to emphasise the need to continue investing in medical research, early diagnosis and new treatments”, said the Socialist Nicolás Cruz. Fundraising tables In addition to reading out the manifesto, AFA Mijas took to the streets that morning to raise awareness of the disease, educate the public about it and raise funds to support its users by setting up fundraising tables outside the Casa Museo in Mijas Pueblo and the health centres in Las Lagunas and La Cala.
