Mijas Town Hall is requesting that the validity of the 2027–2030 Beach Plan be extended from 8 to 11 months so that leisure and catering establishments can operate for almost the entire year. “This would improve services for residents and tourists, such as beach bars, sun loungers and parasols, massage tents and water sports areas, and would help reduce seasonal tourism in the municipality”, said the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP). The proposal was put forward on Thursday 17th at a meeting between municipal representatives and business owners in the sector, prior to presenting the 2027–2030 Municipal Beach Plan to the Regional Government’s Ministry of the Environment, and following agreement with the sectors involved.

Once discussed and presented, the plan will be submitted to the Regional Government for renewal / C.Luque.

Gómez Teruel explained to business owners that “this proposal to extend the season from 8 to 11 months is a decision that does not oblige all businesses to remain open throughout that period. It is merely a maximum proposal that provides legal cover for those wishing to operate for eleven months (from February to December inclusive), but does not oblige them to do so. Business owners will therefore continue to decide how long to keep their businesses open”. This document maintains all current features: 26 plots for sun loungers and parasols; 17 ‘espeto’ sardine-skewer areas associated with beach bars; 14 massage tents; three terraces associated with restaurants; 17 public toilets; five beaches adapted for people with disabilities and reduced mobility; three water sports areas (one of which is municipal, on La Cala beach); and seven navigation channels (one of which is designated for kitesurfing at El Chaparral). New features The plan adds two further beach bar terraces to bring existing ope-

rations into line with the regulations of the Directorate-General for Coasts, which requires authorisation for these businesses to be included in the new text. At the meeting, in response to questions from business owners, Gómez Teruel explained several changes to the beach area, such as the new location of the trampolines, which will move from El Torreón square to the boat playground to clear access to La Cala beach. Beach Plan This is a planning document which includes, among many other aspects, beach concessions,

such as demountable facilities. It is accompanied by a document on beach cleaning and maintenance, a report on the storms that affected the coastline last summer, a report on the problem of seaweed arrivals, the safety plan, etc. “This is a fairly comprehensive document setting out an overall planning for all aspects of a municipality’s beach services”, said Francis Pérez, a municipal officer. The deadline agreed between representatives of the Beaches Department and business owners for reviewing and reaching consensus on the text of the 2027– 2030 Beaches Plan will be short.

On 30th September, it will be submitted to the Regional Government of Andalusia. The representative of the Mijas Beach Business Association, Carlos Morales, stated that “this document will provide us business owners with the certainty we need to invest in and improve our facilities and the services we provide, without running into legal problems. It is essential for the sector. It gives us great peace of mind that the plan will be approved by the Town Hall, the Regional Government and the Coastal Authority, as we have been dealing with beach regulation issues for many years”.

euros to sports grants Thirteen clubs in the municipality, serving more than 3,200 local athletes, are the beneficiaries of this funding scheme; which the local Executive highlights as the highest figure in history Ed. Dept. / Jacobo Perea Design: M. Fernández

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), welcomed representatives from thirteen local sports clubs to the Las Lagunas Sports Centre on Wednesday 16th to present them with the grants provided by the Town Hall to fund their activities. Specifically, the total amount stands at 800,000 euros, which,

The grants

were awarded once the clubs had completed the necessary paperwork

as the Town Hall highlights, “is the highest figure in history”. The beneficiary clubs are: Club de Ajedrez Tarmina, Club Deportivo Sala de Armas Adalid Mijas, Club Deportivo La Dorada, Club Deportivo Pescadores Mosca Málaga Fly Fishing, Club de Bádminton Suel, Club Natación Mijas, Club Deportivo Raquetas de Mijas, Club de Balonmano San Francisco de Asís Mijas, Club Deportivo Mijas, Club Deportivo La Cala de Mijas, Club Deportivo Mijas Unión Basket, Candor Club de Fútbol and Club Polideportivo Mijas Las Lagunas. The financial grants awarded correspond to 2025 and are paid out once the clubs have completed the necessary paperwork. The Executive recalls that “they are awarded, as is customary, through a competitive process, thereby complying with the provisions of the Subsidies Act”.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, alongside representatives from thirteen sports clubs / Jacobo Perea.

Investment “Supporting our sports clubs means investing in our town. Mijas Town Hall firmly believes in sport as a tool for education, integration and social cohesion, and these grants represent a clear commitment to the people, to our young people, to our families and to all those who make sport a fundamental part of our society”, stated Mata, who met with representatives of the organisations today. The items subsidised by Mijas Town Hall under this call for applications include federation fees; transport for players and coaches; meals; staff andindependent professionals; accommodation; the purchase, hire or repair of equipment and materials; medical, physiotherapy and pharmacy costs; insurance; administration and running costs; the hire of sports facilities; and the purchase of trophies and prizes. The councillor for Sport, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), for her part, highlighted that this is the first time the call for grant applications and their awarding have coincided with the start of the sports season.

ANA MATA, may o res s o f M ij as “SUPPORTING OUR SPORTS CLUBS MEANS INVESTING IN OUR TOWN”

FE E D B A C K FROM BENEFICIARIES Club Polideportivo Mijas, which comprises numerous sections, has received the largest grant, amounting to 332,493 euros. “This grant comes at just the right time for us; we are the largest club, and we have to cover payroll, transport, meal allowances, referee fees, and everything else involved in running the club”, said Jesús Díaz, treasurer of Club Polideportivo Mijas-Las Lagunas, speaking on behalf of CP Mijas. Club Balonmano San Francisco de Asís has received 78,600 euros. “Not only does it give us a huge boost, but it practically enables us to compete where we are, cover travel costs for away matches, and buy equipment”, said the vice-president, Chema Jiménez. CD Raquetas de Mijas is another of the beneficiary organisations,

receiving 70,250 euros: “Apart from the speed with which the grants have been awarded this year, it has come like a glove to start the season in the best possible way”. 64,000 euros have been awarded to CD Mijas Unión Basket, a club chaired by Daniel Moreno: “It is essential for the running of our activity; this grant is vital for us to survive and provide this service for the kids”. A total of 63,000 euros has been allocated to CD La Cala de Mijas. “Thanks to the grant from the Town Hall, we can survive. Otherwise, it would be practically impossible; parents would have to cover all the costs, and some children would not even be able to play football”, said the president, Francisco Mota. Candor CF has received 62,563 euros. “This sum enables us to cover a number of expenses we have already incurred and without which the scope of our club would probably not be the same”, noted board member Miguel Galisteo. Club Deportivo Mijas now has a

grant of 57,200 euros at its disposal. “This is a crucial component that allows the financial operation of the club to take place; together with contributions from families and the work of the Board of Directors, it enables us to keep this project going for another year”, said the treasurer of the Club, Carlos Quero. Mijas Town Hall has awarded Club Natación Mijas 47,550 euros. “This support will help us continue to achieve success and stay on the path we have been following for so many years”, emphasised the club’s coach and boardmember, Adrián Hurtado. Club Bádminton Suel has received 13,176 euros. “This is our third year and without this support we wouldn’t be able to develop and keep the club going. All the costs for equipment, shirts and everything else… it’s a huge help”, said the team’s treasurer, Maarten Meinesz. Sala de Armas Adalid has received 4,800 euros, a sum that “will help our fencers to travel to national competitions and progress in their sporting careers; we are very grateful”. Club Deportivo de Pescadores Mosca Malaga ‘Fly Fishing’, chaired by Eduardo Lunas, has received 3,570 euros. Lunas acknowledged that this grant “enables us, as a club and as athletes, to travel around Andalusia for championships. Having this grant support us is very important because it allows us to compete without costs holding us back”. Club de Ajedrez Tarmina has also applied for these grants, receiving 1,929 euros. “It’s very helpful because it provides us with funds to continue investing in the club; that’s what matters”, emphasised the president, Marina Valencia. Finally, Club Deportivo La Dorada, has been awarded “865 euros, which is a huge relief and helps us cover agency fees and federation costs”, summarised its president, Gabriel Tovar.

Mijas Town Hall, through the Foreigners’ Department, has organised a wide-ranging programme for September and October. The councillor for the department, Mario Bravo (PP), presented the programme on the morning of Thursday 17th September and emphasised that “the Foreigners’ Department is always very active in ensuring that the needs of the foreign resident community are met; that is why it is organising four events that we believe are quite important and well worth highlighting”. During the second half of September, two initiatives aimed at the wider international and business community in the municipality and on the Costa del Sol will take place. September The first of these events will be the 3rd Costa del Sol International Business Networking Event, to be held on Tuesday 22nd September, from 18:00, at Chaparral Golf Club. “It is a gathering of business associations wishing to promote their activities and facilitate an exchange of both experiences and projects on the Costa del Sol”, explained Bravo. The event, organised by Mijas Town Hall’s Foreigners Department in collaboration with various networking groups on the Costa del Sol, aims to facilitate contact between professionals and businesspeople, showcase products, services and expertise, as well as share local market trends and generate new

opportunities for collaboration. Tickets must be purchased in advance; they cost 20 euros and include a tapa and drinks. A week later, on 29th September, the Foreigners’ Department will hold an informative talk in English entitled ‘Living well in Spain starts with getting the essentials right’. The event will take place at 16:00 in the conference hall at the La Cala Town Hall Branch Office; admission is free and open to all. It will be delivered in English.

The activities

are open to the public, although some require prior registration During the session, issues of interest to foreign residents will be addressed. According to the head of Blacktower Mijas, Ilse Liebrechts, “we’re going to talk a bit about everything, for example, residency, Form 120, inheritances… things that foreign residents who have just arrived here may not yet be aware of, and we’re here to help and provide further information”. Information will also be provided on tourist licences and taxes for non-residents, as well as issues relating to Spanish wills and inheritances. The event will include a specific section on financial planning for women. “This time we want to focus a little more on women, as it is often the case that their husbands pass away or they separate, and they haven’t properly organised their financial affairs beforehand, that’s where we

want to place a little more emphasis”, said the manager. Booking is recommended. This department is also reviving the solidarity tables in collaboration with groups, associations and NGOs, which set up stalls to offer various types of gifts and products to raise funds. In September, it will take place on the 26th and 30th, and in October on the 28th and 31st, outside the La Cala Town Hall Branch Office. October In October, the traditional Royal British Legion parade, a real classic in La Cala, is scheduled for the 17th. The meeting point will be La Butibamba Park, from where the parade will set off through the main streets of this urban centre in Mijas. One of the most eye-catching events this autumn will be the International Conference on AI, which will be held in English at CIOMijas on 23rd October from 09:00 to 14:00. Attendees will be able to learn how to integrate artificial intelligence into their businesses effectively, using established tools. Admission is free, but due to the venue’s limited capacity, places must be booked via email at frd@mijas.es. The deadline for applications is 20th October. Finally, Bravo concluded by stating that “the foreign community does not come here just to retire or to live; they also come to work and to boost economic activity, and we believe that the support the Town Hall can provide through the Foreigners’ Department is important”.

The Andalusian Government continues to fast-track the implementation of the Ventilla Plan, a project it regards as strategic for strengthening the capacity of the electricity grid on the western Costa del Sol and meeting the new supply needs arising from economic, industrial and residential growth in the area. The project, promoted by eDistribución, Endesa’s network subsidiary, has had planning permission granted by Mijas Town Hall since early September for the construction of the new electrical substation in the Rincón del Hinojal area, following the relevant environmental approval from the Andalusian Regional Government.

Pictured: a recent meeting between the regional Government delegate, Patricia Navarro; the Energy delegate, Antonio García; and Rafael Sánchez, Endesa’s director in Andalusia / J.A.

The councillor for Energy Efficiency at Mijas Town Hall, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), highlighted the importance of this work and stated that it is “very good news for Mijas and the rest of the Costa del Sol”. In this regard, he explained that the new

infrastructure will mean “an improvement both in terms of the potential to increase power capacity in the area and in the efficiency and performance of the electricity grid”. The Ventilla Plan provides for the construction of this new elec-

trical transformer substation, with an investment of 17.1 million euros from Endesa. The infrastructure will provide a new supply point for the distribution network on the western Costa del Sol, increasing its capacity and improving the quality and security of supply. The councillor also highlighted that connecting the new substation to the existing electricity infrastructure will provide alternatives in the event of any potential incidents. “If there is any kind of fault in the grid, it will also have alternative routes to supply power”, he explained. Streamlining procedures The project has been included in the Regional Government’s Project Acceleration Unit (UAP), a mechanism designed to provide specific, coordinated monitoring of initiatives deemed strategic due to their economic and territorial impact. The aim is to streamline the various administrative procedures required so that the infras-

tructure can be delivered as quickly as possible. In this regard, the councillor for Energy Efficiency noted that Mijas Town Hall has worked with “absolute priority” to facilitate the granting of planning permission. Torres Trella described the project as “a major piece of critical infrastructure” and pointed out that the planned investment exceeds 17 million euros. The new substation will also feature four 66 kV lines, arranged in two double circuits, approximately six kilometres long with an underground route. These lines will connect Ventilla to the substations at Elviria, Mijas, Cortijo Colorado and Fuengirola, thereby strengthening the grid network in the area. Now that municipal planning permission has been granted, all that remains is to complete the processing of the Declaration of Public Utility (DUP) for the land where the infrastructure will be installed. In parallel, Endesa is working on planning the works.

organised to mark World Tourism Day and allows Mijas to join in an international celebration. The event also coincides with the final stretch of the summer season, a particularly important period for retail and hospitality businesses. The event is organised by the Mijas Town Hall’s Tourism Department with the goal of continuing to welcome visitors in the summer, but also increasing their arrival throughout the rest of the year, given Mijas’s ability to offer attractions 12 months a year.

Security According to figures from the Ministry of the Interior, crime rose by 16% in 2022 and by a further 17% in 2023, while in 2025 it fell by 10 per cent Editorial Department

The Town Hall highlights that the town has reversed the upward trend in crime seen in the years leading up to November 2023. Official figures from the Ministry of the Interior, as reported by the council, show that between January and September 2022, criminal offences rose by 16 per cent compared with the same period in 2021, rising from 3,322 to 3,855. A year later, between January and September 2023, they rose by a further 17 per cent, reaching 4,510 offences. In contrast to this trend, the figures for January to September 2025 show 4,049 offences, 10 per cent fewer than the 4,500 recorded in the same period of 2024. In light of these figures, the councillor for the Local Police, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), believes that this change “is neither a coincidence nor something that happens overnight”. “We have come through a period of several years in which crime was rising

Mijas sees a fall in crime

following the 35% increases recorded between 2021 and 2023 significantly, and reversing such a trend requires organisation, planning and a great deal of hard work. That is exactly what we are doing at the Local Police”, he points out. The figures for last August alone give an indication of the scale of this daily activity. The Local Police dealt with 3,119 cases recorded via COTA —incidents and calls handled from headquarters—, made 18 arrests, processed 133 cases and carried out

police operations involving 1,759 vehicles and 1,023 people. During August, 1,347 enforcement actions were carried out under the General Traffic Regulations, 84 relating to compliance with municipal by-laws and 79 under the Public Safety Protection Act. In addition to these, there were 67 reports resulting from interventions, as well as 13 actions relating to town planning and ten concerning busi-

ness premises. Cuevas points out that “when we talk about security, we are not just talking about an arrest that might be reported in the media. There are thousands of operations, checks, identity checks, investigations and interventions that form part of our officers’ work and which enable us to maintain a presence on the streets and take action when necessary”. Furthermore, the councillor

JUAN CARLOS CUEVAS DAWSON Local Police Councillor (Vox)

“The lack of Civil Guard personnel in Mijas is a long-standing complaint, and we continue to call on Pedro Sánchez’s government for more human and material resources”

also notes that the figures for 2025 do not merely reflect an overall reduction of 10 per cent. Between January and September, conventional crime also fell by 7.4 per cent, robberies involving violence and intimidation by 25.4 per cent, burglaries by 21.6 per cent and residential burglaries by 23.3 per cent. More resources “There is still work to be done and we will never settle. But to those who wish to promote the idea that Mijas used to be safer, the figures speak for themselves: between 2021 and 2023, crime rates were rising, and subsequently that trend reversed. There is no secret to it: organisation, hard work and the daily commitment of our police officers”, he stated.

This event, centred on the theme ‘Stronger Together’ this year, served to reaffirm the unshakeable alliance between public institutions and the voluntary sector. Against this backdrop of synergy, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), highlighted the organisation’s vital role as a logistical and human link within the support network. “Together, the public administration, private entities and the foundation manage to help those in need, and the truth is that this foundation does exceptional work,” said the mayoress. She also emphasised that this publicprivate partnership is vital to over-

It is this combination of people, entities and volunteers that enables us to cover the needs that society has a responsibility to address”, she said. Bravo issued a direct appeal to the rest of the Costa del Sol’s thriving business community to adopt this approach and introduce similar solidarity initiatives, offering their support to change the lives of those who need it most. Own resources For his part, the PSOE councillor Josele González expressed his pride at having this organisation within the municipality and highlighted the gratitude shown by the local community. González emphasised that the organisation provides financial support and contributes direct resources from the hotel chain to pave the way for groups operating on minimal budgets. “They are filling the gaps that neither the Regional Government of Andalusia nor the local councils themselves manage to reach when it comes to helping those most vulnerable families in need”, he stated.

Iranian women from 16 countries took part

On Saturday 12th September, the programme brought together Iranian women from 16 countries in Mijas to exchange experiences and knowledge in the fight for equality. The conference began with a reception for participants at the La Cala Cultural Centre, featuring a toast among attendees, and continued with presentations at the La Cala Town Hall Branch Office. Nilufar Saberi, one of the speakers and a member of WISE, explained that the aim of this gathering is “to create a female force in order to achieve real, sustainable and lasting equality in the future of Iran”. “I am a chemical engineer who has worked for many years in England

and I am here to stand in solidarity with women. I believe that together we can do anything”, said Jilla Wright, another of the speakers and a member of the same organisation. SI Costa del Sol and the Foreigners’ Department backed this initiative in solidarity with women. “We are holding this conference together because it is about solidarity. We want all women around the world to have a voice, presence, education and leadership”, explained the president of Soroptimist,

Aura Roderick. For his part, the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP), explained that “women coming from 16 countries were gathering in Mijas to help each other, support each other and demand that full equality guaranteed not only by the constitution of almost all democratic countries, but even by common sense”. Afternoon session Following the morning presentations, the 5th Annual Women’s Solidarity Conference for a Bet-

ter World continued with a wide-ranging programme. “After a fantastic Iranian lunch, we had a number of workshops in different languages, offering the chance to talk face-to-face, and I think that was also very important”, emphasised the secretary of SI Costa del Sol, Dafne Theuissen. As a closing event, an activity open to the public was held in the square outside the Town Hall Branch Office in La Cala, combining various cultural traditions, from Iran’s Dance for Freedom to songs in Spanish

and English performed by Mami Curl. “Soroptimist called me last year for an event as I’m from Mijas; I support quite a few local causes and associations, and it’s a pleasure for me to support anything that benefits the people here, those who contribute to Mijas, and above all, to support women”, said Sara Ramirez de Arellano, known as Mami Curl. The event also featured the singer Katy Evoghli, who collaborates with WISE as an Iranian woman and as a member of the Bahá’í faith, a religion severely persecuted in Iran for its beliefs. “I write songs about awareness and social concerns relating to human rights, and I really like collaborating with entities such as Amnesty International or human rights organisations, and that’s how I met WISE”, explained Evoghli, who also performed on Saturday morning as part of the conference. The event culminated with the iconic song ‘Bella Ciao’, followed by a Kurdish dance in which the audience was invited to take part as a symbolic gesture of collective strength, joy and unity.
