On Tuesday 8th September, the Virgen de la Peña celebrated her feast day, surrounded by a crowd of locals and visitors Report by Mónica López, Alberto Lago and Cristina Luque / Photos: Amanda Gijón and Isabel Merino / Design: I.M.
Shortly after 21:30 on 8th September, a large procession set off from La Muralla, led by the float of the Virgen de la Peña, celebrating the feast day of all the people of Mijas. Before leaving the Church of the Inmaculada Concepcion, the brotherhood handed the first bell strikes to two veteran bearers, Pedro and Lázaro. The patron saint, on her silver and gold throne, was adorned with a cloak and gown embroidered in gold and pristine white by Juan Rosen. The floral decoration of the float featured, once again this year, the traditional tuberoses. According to the parish priest of Mijas Pueblo, Hermán Marcel Lunar, “the Nativity of Mary is what shapes the whole experience we are going through. We are celebrating the birth of the Virgin, the Mother of the Lord, who has cho-

sen Mijas as her home. And Mijas responds, ‘I choose you, Virgen de La Peña’, which is the motto that has accompanied us throughout this year’s novena. We are filled with emotion and enthusiasm”. For his part, the elder brother of the Brotherhood of the Virgen de La Peña, Raúl Fernández, stated that “this procession has many highlights. The descent down the Cuesta de la Villa, where the Mother meets the whole town. We would also highlight the shower of petals at the Folk Museum, Calle Carril, the arrival in El Barrio, her passage under the dome, and the grand finale with the ‘Salve’ sung by Nuevo Día at the end of the route. We have a thousand special spots”. The musical accompaniment was provided by the Las Lagunas Music Group, the Nuestra Señora de la Paz Band from Málaga and the Paso y la Esperanza Bugle and Drum Band, also from Málaga. The group of women wearing mantillas saw high participation this year, as did the other sections, completing a
massive procession that stretched along the entire route. Before leaving the parish church, there was an exchange of ceremonial staffs between the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), and the elder brother of the Virgen de la Peña brotherhood. According to the mayoress, “our wish for today and for every day is unity. We must look after all those who are close to us, but also those who are far away and are going through a difficult time; that is why I call for unity. This is what the municipality of Mijas deserves, but also the people of Spain. I extend this wish to all those living in Ceuta who are not having an easy time”. Political assessment Political groups also wished to express their gratitude to the organisers. The first deputy mayor, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), sent “a special thought to the people of Ceuta who are having a very hard time and have not been able to enjoy their festivities. We stand with them; we send them our warmest thoughts; we will not leave them alone. And here in Mijas, let’s now enjoy ourselves, as we are so fortunate”. The deputy mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), stated that “looking at the faces of the people of Mijas, we can see that it is a spectacular day and that we are all sharing in the celebrations with great enthusiasm. I would like to thank everyone who has made this procession, or any event in honour of our patron saint, possible”. For his part, councillor Josele González (PSOE) said that “as every year, Mijas has filled every corner of the town with love and devotion as our patron saint, the Virgen de la Peña, passed by in a procession that is undoubtedly marked in red on the calendar of the people of Mijas. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the entire new governing board of the brotherhood, especially Raúl Fernández, who is taking up his post as the new elder brother. And to all the people of Mijas who took part in the procession, whether carrying mantillas, holding candles, or serving as throne bearers”. For his part, the spokesperson for Ciudadanos, José Carlos Martín, stated that “yesterday was the big day for our patron saint, the Virgen de la Peña, whom we

During the procession, the Queen of El Compás was showered with petals on four occasions: once on the balcony of La Jarita; at the Folk Museum, where the chapel of San Sebastián rang its bell as the float passed by; another time on Carril Street, where two local women also sang to the Virgin; and the fourth time on Coín Street. As the procession passed through Barrio Santana, Los Remedios Church paid homage to its patron saint with a peal of bells. From there, the procession retraced its route, passing such iconic sites as La Puente, Plaza de la Constitución and the dome that the brotherhood’s Youth Group had crafted in her honour. And finally, on Avenida de El Compás, the Nuevo Día orchestra performed a ‘Salve’ to the patron saint and a sevillana in honour of her feast day.

who made this very special day possible”. The end of the procession brought one of the most significant changes this year. The bearers carried the float up to the doors of the chapel and, after dismantling the poles, carried the Mother of all
the people of Mijas into the chapel itself, while the parish priest of Mijas invited all the parishioners to sing the hymn to the Virgin of La Peña. And so, once again this year, the town’s patron saint shone before her people, surrounded by the unconditional love of Mijas.

The Festivities and Fair in Honour of the Virgen de la Peña got underway on the evening of Sunday 6th with the traditional opening speech, given this year by Mijas journalist Mari Carmen Jaime. The Miguel González-Berral Auditorium hosted the event, during which the town crier took the audience on a journey through her childhood memories and the experiences that have shaped her relationship with the Mijas Fair. The journalist crafted an opening speech where she also aimed to show how the Mijas festivities are experienced through the eyes of those arriving from abroad, who discover a welcoming town deeply in love with its traditions. “It has been, is and will be, with all due respect to the one in El Barrio, the best fair in the world: the Mijas Pueblo Fair”, stated Mari Carmen Jaime, who drew on a Mexican friend and her family to explain what the fair means to the people of Mijas and how that feeling is passed down from generation to generation. “It is a lesson in love, tradition and customs”, she explained. The opening speech concluded with words from the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP): “Mari Carmen has hit the right note this year with that opening speech; what she is trying to convey, in a way, is that the town of Mijas is always welcoming; it is an open town where people have a good time, and we also want to share that experience with everyone who comes here”.

The big week has arrived in Mijas Pueblo with the celebration of its traditional fair in honour of the patron saint of Mijas, the Virgen de la Peña. On Monday the 7th, the festivities began early in the afternoon with the parade of giants and big-heads. The traditional parade was animated by the Barakatum batukada, group which entertained all those present and local residents with the ancestral rhythm of their drums. The procession was also accompanied by the Las Lagunas Music Band, whose festive melodies and beats were perfectly suited to the occasion. Following them were four children’s floats, accompanied by various Disney characters and many superheroes, much to the delight of the youngest members of the family. This year, the Cristo de la Paz and Nazareno brotherhoods were responsible for organising these children’s floats, alongside Mijas Sports Club. Of course, the big-headed figures were there too, a total of 12 of them, always present in this parade. The procession wound its way through the village’s main streets, reaching Barrio Santana, and making a particularly notable stop in Plaza de la Paz, where an area had been set aside for children with reduced mobility, so that they too could enjoy this great festival. On Monday, the final novena in honour of the patron saint was

The Mijas Town Hall is maintaining the voluntary payment deadline for Property Tax (IBI), refuse collection fees and road tax (IVTM) until 20th November. From this date onwards, non-payment will move to enforcement proceedings, meaning surcharges ranging from 5 per cent to 20 per cent, plus interest, will be applied. The only discount applied to municipal taxes is for direct debit payments. The Department of Finance and Economy points out that this discount stands at 5 per cent and is of a financial nature, i.e. the maximum permitted by law. New school year gets under
in Mijas with 7,500
students in the classrooms
The Town Hall has invested 900,000 euros in repairs and maintenance at the eleven infant and primary schools Report by María José Gómez / Design: Isabel Merino
Over 7,500 schoolchildren from Mijas started the new school year on Thursday 10th at the municipality’s 11 infant and primary schools. At CEIP Virgen de la Peña, as at the other schools, students arrived with their backpacks, school supplies and plenty of excitement. “To be honest, I’m really nervous, but I’m also very happy because I’m going to see my friends again after such a long time”, said Alba Fernández, a fifthyear student. Her classmate Cristina Andreu said, “I’m nervous too; I’m looking forward to seeing my teachers and my friends”. But not everyone is happy about the start of the new term. “I’m not really looking forward to it, because I don’t like school”, said Silvia Andreu. With the return to the
classroom, routine and normality are restored after the summer holidays. “I’m delighted they’re going back to school; they’re nervous but very excited, and doing really well, to be honest”, explained Cati Perea, mother of a young child, who added that “summer is very long, there are so many days, and they miss their little friends”. For her part, Lola Casado, mother of two young children, said, “They’re very happy; both of them are really looking forward to starting the new school year. I’m also looking forward to them starting school, being with their friends and getting down to studying, which is very important”. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor for Education, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), visited CEIP Virgen de la Peña in Las Lagunas on this very first day of term, where they

reported on the work carried out by the Town Hall to prepare the schools. It’s about offering encouragement to the whole educational community, which is so important and does such excellent work”, said the mayoress of Mijas, who added that “education must start at home, and what they do is pass on knowledge so that our children are prepared for the present and the future. This also applies to families, who are a fundamental pillar of society”.
The number of students who returned to the classrooms on Thursday 10th is around 200 higher than in the previous academic year, according to figures from the Department of Education. The day went smoothly, with staggered arrivals. “The schools have been left in tip-top condition”, emphasised the councillor for Education, who explained that “just as the birth rate has fallen significantly across the province, by 20 per cent, it has also fallen in Las Lagunas, reducing the number of students per school”. Torres Trella added that “in La Cala, schools are still under considerable strain, so we are making an effort and continually asking the Regional Government to resolve this problem; funding has already been allocated for extensions, for example at Jardín Botánico and IES La Cala”.

The project is expected to take three months, the councillor added, noting that a meeting will be held next Wednesday with the residents’ association and the contractor, VGC Global, to inform residents of all the details of the project. The renovation will have a significant impact on key aspects for residents, such as improved supply guarantees, greater inherent resistance to internal pressures and thermal changes, optimal use of available resources, and comprehensive monitoring of the quality of the water supplied. The existing fibre-cement pipes will give way to a new ductile iron network with diameters of 100 and 150 millimetres. Work will also involve trench digging and backfilling, the installation of new pipes, the replacement of service connections and the fitting of valves on branch pipes. On Monday 7th, the Mijas Town Hall began comprehensive renovation works on the water supply in the El Coto residential area. This project involves an investment of 362,000 euros to replace existing fibre-cement pipes with ductile iron ones, which are safer and have a larger diameter and, therefore, greater capacity. This was announced by the councillor for Infrastructure and Works, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), who explained on Monday 7th that the works will take place on “several major streets that had a very old fibre-cement water supply system, which is now completely outdated, with frequent faults and water cuts; the Town Hall has therefore decided to replace it with ductile iron pipes”. Specifically, work will take place on Rebeco, El Corzo, Codornices

water losses and, consequently, improving the water pressure reaching homes in the neighbourhood.
The network spans a total length of 1,609.89 linear metres, and the route has been chosen specifically
to minimise water losses and crossconnections. Torres Trella added that 104 domestic service connections will be installed in accordance with the regulations governing the supply of end-user drinking water set by Acosol, the public water company under the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol. Works in Doña Pilar In addition to the works that began this week, VGC Global will also soon be carrying out a similar project in the Doña Pilar residential area, involving work on Hernán Cortés, Alejandro Malaspina, Francisco Pizarro, Fernando de Magallanes, Juan Sebastián Elcano and Pedro Valdivia streets. According to the councillor, the works in both residential areas will take place simultaneously. In the case of Doña Pilar, the network extends over 1,377.35 linear metres and 68 domestic connec-
tions will be installed. The budget for this project, according to Torres Trella, amounts to 281,000 euros; therefore, the two projects together have an approximate cost of 643,000 euros. Water levy In addition to these two projects, the councillor announced that the local government is set to approve, at a meeting of the Local Government Board, a project funded through Acosol’s water levy for the comprehensive refurbishment of the water supply systems in both the El Coto and La Sierrezuela residential areas. “We are now talking about a much larger-scale project, which in this case is being funded through the Acosol water levy. Work on drafting the project is about to begin, and we hope to start execution next yea”, concluded the councillor.

Soroptimist International Costa del Sol states that education is one of the cornerstones of its work. Since 2015, the club has been supporting students at the University of Málaga and, each year, nominates a local student for the Soroptimist International of Europe scholarship. More than 30,000 Soroptimist members contribute to this fund, which supports approximately 30 women each year. Lucrecia Souvirón, a member and project coordinator, explained that “we usually start looking for students at the end of October. We check whether they meet the criteria before inviting them for an interview. It’s very interesting to talk to the younger generation and learn about all the projects they’re involved in; it’s very inspiring”, she said. “We’re delighted to announce that this year’s candidate is Paula Warren Jiménez, and she will receive support from this fund. Her work is important in the fight against climate change”.

Scholarship recipient Warren holds a degree in Biology and is currently completing her doctoral thesis on carbon dynamics in salt marshes from a restoration perspective. Salt marshes play an essential role in the global carbon cycle due

M.J.G. Soroptimist International Costa del Sol invites us to join them “in building a more sustainable future”. With this aim in mind, the NGO launched the Soroptimist ‘Nurture Your Optimism’ Award, which celebrates its fifth edition in 2026. It is a competition in which members of the public can nominate organisations or businesses in the province of Málaga. “We are looking for organisations and businesses in the province of Málaga that are transforming our local food system: from food production and distribution, to education, innovation, food preparation and sustainable ca-

The initiative is supported by the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, Justicia Alimentaria, the Málaga Red Cross, Sabor a Málaga, Costa Women, the Foreigners Department and the Mijas Town Hall. The event is sponsored by HM Hospitales. The nomination period is now open and closes on 15th October. Open Day at Suspiros de Cuatro Patas This showcases the work of the volunteers looking after around fifty dogs searching for a home N.L. The Suspiros de Cuatro Patas animal shelter held an open day so that potential adopters could get to know the dogs living at the shelter while they wait for a home. It is also a way for them to raise awareness of their work. Fifty dogs live at this shelter while waiting for a permanent home, although it is not always easy; that is why open days are a
great way to facilitate adoptions. “The aim is for people to find out more about the shelter and the work we do, and to get to know the dogs, because there are dogs that don’t get adopted because people haven’t met them in person, you might see them on social media and notice a few of their traits, but when you come here you realise they have
something special that makes you fall in love with them”, explained Laura España, a volunteer at the shelter. It also serves to highlight the work carried out by volunteers.
