Mijas shows its support for the people of Ceuta The Street On Wednesday 2nd September, coinciding with Ceuta Day, Mijas joined the rallies organised across Spain to demand, as a first priority, the protection of the people of Ceuta following the progressive deterioration of daily life in the autonomous city. Hundreds of residents across the municipality’s three town centres came together as a sign of support and solidarity with the people of Ceuta. “Ceuta’s integrity is under threat and its public services are under a strain that is sustainable neither in space nor in time”, stated mayoress Ana Mata. Furthermore, Ceuta residents living in Mijas or with close ties to the municipality read out a manifesto demanding security, resources and effective border control from the State. / Nuria Luque. On the afternoon of Wednesday 2nd, Mijas held as many as three official events in support of Ceuta, outside the Town Hall and the branch offices in Las Lagunas and La Cala, thereby joining the call issued by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP). The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who was in Las Lagunas, called for the protection of Ceuta’s residents as an immediate

priority, following the progressive deterioration of daily life in the autonomous city. “Today we are calling a spade a spade. Ceuta is not suffering from a migration problem. Ceuta’s integrity is under threat and its public services are under strain that is sustainable neither in space nor in time”, she said. Ceuta residents living in Mijas or with strong ties to the municipality were tasked with reading a manifesto entitled ‘We Are All Ceuta’, which called on the State to provide security, resources and effective border control, always with respect and rejecting any expression of hatred or confrontation. these residents was Rosa Moreno, who described what her family is going through in Ceuta, a situation “anything but normal, especially for the children, who can no longer go to the park or the beach, have missed out on their local fair and can no longer even go out for a walk in the street, as they used to. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. My family tells me things that break

On the afternoon of Wednesday 2nd, demonstrations in support of the people of Ceuta were held at all three town centers my heart”, said the resident. Last event last Wednesday, which coincided with the celebration of Ceuta’s Autonomy Day, was a unanimous call for responsibility. “It’s not about sending more doctors or more resources; we have to start at the root of the problem, which is to remove the invaders from our country and, after that, offer people everything they deserve. We must return to and restore normality and, above all, ensure that this never happens again”, said Eloy Belmonte (Vox), deputy mayor of Las Lagunas, to which the mayoress added that “we cannot have a president who has been on holiday for the whole month, whi-

le these people have been unable to leave their homes because their personal integrity has been violated”. Authorities and local residents shared the same view: to continue to stand by Ceuta, defending the rule of law, security and peaceful coexistence. “What has taken place in the autonomous city is a full-blown invasion; the situation is becoming deadlocked and the Government needs to get its act together now and resolve this problem”, concluded the spokesperson for Ciudadanos at the Mijas Town Hall, José Carlos Martín. Gathering in La Cala Outside the La Cala branch office, the deputy mayor of Mijas, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), and the deputy mayor of La Cala, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), as well as other councillors from the government team, led this gathering, accompanied by local residents and citizens from Ceuta living in the municipality, in yet another show

of solidarity and support for the autonomous city. Cuevas Dawson took part in the event, where he emphasised that Ceuta’s integrity is under threat and warned that the strain on its public services is “unsustainable”. According to the councillor, “Ceuta is being invaded and there is appalling neglect on the part of this Government towards the people of Ceuta, who are really suffering. And we, the people of Mijas, are here supporting the people of Ceuta and will continue to do so until the Government takes action”. For his part, Maldonado called on the Spanish Government to take urgent measures. “From here, from Mijas and from all over Spain, we call on our Government to strengthen our borders and, above all, to consolidate our unity so that we can defend ourselves against situations such as this”, he added. Mijas Pueblo, stands with Ceuta The defence of our borders, security and peaceful coexistence

In La Cala, it was a Ceuta native living in Mijas who was tasked with reading out the manifesto. On this occasion, Álvaro Cerezo emphasised that “when Ceuta suffers, Spain responds; when Ceuta needs help, Spain stands by its side; and when anyone questions who we are, our response is one and the same. Ceuta is not for sale, Ceuta must be defended”. There were more Ceuta natives supporting their people from La Cala. Isabel María Fernández, another Ceuta native living in the municipality, said that this situation “is very hard to bear because you are seeing everything that is happening in Ceuta and you cannot do anything about it, and that creates a great sense of helplessness”.

were also discussed in Mijas Pueblo. There, outside the Town Hall, hundreds more residents gathered, confirming that Spain stands with Ceuta. Mario Bravo (PP), a councillor on the government team, wished to “make Mijas’s position clear: we are against any invasion and we demand that the Government restore the original situation. As a country, we need a Government that ensures our borders are respected”, he emphasised. Mijas Pueblo also joined, as did La Cala and Las Lagunas, in the demonstrations that took place on Wednesday afternoon to mark Autonomous City Day and, above all, in solidarity with the people of Ceuta and in defence of national integrity.

During the rallies held simultaneously across the country, numerous town halls have unanimously endorsed the FEMP’s manifesto in solidarity with the autonomous city. In this context, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), attended the rally organised in Las Lagunas to raise her voice in defence of the people of Ceuta. The mayoress of Mijas insisted that the absolute priority must be to guarantee the protection of Ceuta’s population. During her speech, Mata was unequivocal: “Today we are calling a spade a spade. Ceuta is not suffering from a migration problem. Ceuta’s integrity is under threat and its public services are under strain that is sustainable neither in space nor in time”, she stated emphatically to those present.

In Mijas Pueblo, councillors from the government team were present: Mario Bravo (centre), Francisco Jerez (left) and Mari Francis Alarcón (right) / A.L.

In the case of Mijas Pueblo, Salvador Pérez, a Ceuta native who has lived in Mijas for over 40 years, was tasked with giving voice to the manifesto. A text which, as well as offering words of encouragement in support of the people of Ceuta, also demands a definitive solution to this crisis: “We ask the Government to take action once and for all and stop doing the foolish things it is doing out of fear of something it harbours. From here, we assert Ceuta’s Spanish identity. Ceuta is Spain and Spain is Ceuta”, Pérez emphasised. Some of those present at the rally wanted to make their support for the people of Ceuta clear, such as Gara Pagés, a woman from Mijas who has lived in Ceuta since 2017 and said she felt “supported”. “The tears”, she continued, “can’t be held back any longer, because we’ve had a very tough few days behind us. I’m a nurse in Ceuta and the situation is dreadful”. For her part, local resident Blanca Berral, said she felt “sadness; I feel despair for them; I’ve been speaking every day to people I know from there ever since this began. I also feel frustration, because at the end of the day we see that politicians aren’t uniting either, as there’s no representation from a certain political side; we should all be as one”.

Mijas ends August close to full hotel occupancy at 94.4 per cent FRANCISCO JEREZ

“We are not talking about isolated figures, but rather the confirmation of a trend: we came off a June and July that were above expectations, and August has surpassed them once again. What matters is not just the percentage; it is that we are growing while much of the province is stagnating or declining. That speaks volumes about the work of the hotels, restaurants and professionals in the sector in Mijas”

Mijas closed the month of August with a hotel occupancy rate of 94.4 per cent, according to data published by the Costa del Sol Hotel Entrepreneurs Association (Aehcos). This figure places the town 1.55 percentage points above the provincial average, set at 92.85 per cent, and makes it the third destination with the highest occupancy rate in the province, behind Benalmádena (96.2 per cent) and Torremolinos (95.5 per cent). Mijas has also improved on its own figure for August 2025 by 0.83 percentage points, when it recorded 93.57 per cent. It is one of the three main tourist towns on the Costa del Sol to have seen growth compared with last summer, alongside Benalmádena and Torremolinos, and is outperforming the province as a whole. This performance has enabled it to climb two places in the provincial rankings: a year ago, Mijas was in fifth place among the major destinations. It is also the second consecutive month in which the municipality has ranked among the top destinations on the Costa del Sol. In July, Mijas recorded an occupancy rate of 92.26 per cent, the second-best figure in the province after Torremolinos, and in August it has increased this figure by more than two percentage points. Exceeding expectations The results for the province as a whole have comfortably exceeded the sector’s expectations. At the end of July, Aehcos estimated an occupancy rate of 88.87 per cent for August and anticipated a slight moderation compared with the previous summer; the actual figure

at the close of the month, at 92.85 per cent, is almost four points above that forecast and 0.70 points above the 92.15 per cent recorded in August 2025. The councillor for Tourism at the Mijas Town Hall, Francisco Jerez (Vox), praised the results, noting that “this is not an isolated figure, but confirmation of a trend: we came off a June and July

that were above expectations, and August has surpassed them once again”. “What matters is not just the percentage; it is that we are growing while much of the province is stagnating or declining. That speaks volumes about the work of the hotels, restaurants and professionals in the sector in Mijas”, he added. Visitor profile The August figures also reflect a

change in the visitor profile. International visitors accounted for 60.5 per cent of guests, compared with 39.5 per cent from Spain, a breakdown that confirms the gradual recovery in Spanish demand observed during the middle of the summer: in July, domestic visitors accounted for 32.2 per cent. The councillor emphasised that these results are due both to the diversity of the town’s offering and to the ongoing dialogue with the sector through Mijas Lab, the public-private tourism forum established in March.

average, set at 92.85 per cent, and the third destination in the province, behind Benalmádena (96.2 per cent) and Torremolinos (95.5 per cent).

Compared with 2025, Mijas also improved on its own figure by 0.83 percentage points, having recorded 93.57 per cent in the same period last year.

Tourism forecast Looking ahead to the coming months, Aehcos forecasts a provincial occupancy rate of 88.58 per cent in September and over 83 per cent in October, with a year-on-year comparison that the association itself describes as moderate. In Mijas, the estimate for October stands at 80.7 per cent.

A diverse destination According to the councillor for Tourism, “Mijas combines beach, mountain, golf, gastronomy, culture and a historic centre with its own identity. This allows us to offer very different experiences within a single destination, and explains why we perform well both in and out of the peak season”. he noted. Tourism currently supports nearly 8,000 jobs in the town, with 7.974 workers linked to the sector in the second quarter of the year, up 3.60 per cent on twelve months ago.

Street Cleaning

The local executive fines FCC

more than 6 million euros

In 2026, it faces seven disciplinary proceedings over street cleaning and waste collection breaches; two of these are very serious Editorial Department

The Street Cleaning Department of the Mijas Town Hall has, so far in 2026, opened seven disciplinary proceedings against the FCC Barbetium joint venture, the contractor awarded the street cleaning and waste collection service, imposing penalties totalling more than 6 million euros, and has also deducted 306,942 euros from its monthly invoices for services it failed to provide. Two of the cases are classified as very serious: the repeated failure to provide scheduled routine services and the breach of obligations regarding the implementation of the service and the facilities agreed in the contract, the latter carrying a penalty of 7 per cent of the contract price, approximately 6.09 million euros out of a total value of 87 million, stated the council. The Department carries out daily checks and assures that “all

The councillor presented the figures at a press conference / Patricia Murillo.

the services covered by the contract are recorded and inventoried, so that the Town Hall knows, on a daily basis, what services have been provided and under what conditions; monitoring that results in a monthly balance when the contractor submits its certification”. “Here we do not act on impressions; we act on a daily record, service by service, with the do-

cumentation in front of us”, said the councillor for Street Cleaning, Eloy Belmonte (Vox). In the eight certifications processed between January and August, 286,718 euros have been deducted for services not carried out (169,133 for waste collection and 117,586 for street cleaning) and a further 20,224 euros in penalties under the Quality Plan. July and August alone

account for 132,929 euros, 43 per cent of the total amount deducted this year. “If a service has not been provided, the first step is simply not to pay for it; the formal proceedings come later, because that failure to comply also incurs a cost for the resident”, noted Belmonte. The 6 million euro fine for failure to fulfil implementation obligations was imposed last May, when proceedings began and the period for submitting representations opened. The company has not responded to the claims, and the case is continuing, pending the relevant municipal department’s enforcement of the fine, the Town Hall emphasised. They also added that the proceedings processed this year attribute to the contractor the repeated failure to provide scheduled services, breach of obligations regarding the roll-out of the service and the agreed facilities, and failure to fulfil the duty to report breakdowns of vehicles assigned to the service. The councillor wished to highlight the scale of the company: “We are not dealing with a small firm overwhelmed by a contract that is too big for it, but with a leading multinational in its sector”, the councillor added. Belmonte pointed out that from

the time the contract was awarded in 2022 until November 2023, the previous govenrment team, formed by the PSOE and Ciudadanos, “did not audit a single service, with 100 per cent of the certifications paid without any review whatsoever, and not a single penalty or deduction was processed”, he clarified.

It also

deducts a further 306,942 for unrendered cleaning services These are the figures available to date, the Town Hall emphasised, “although there are proceedings currently still underway. Disciplinary procedures require time and effort, and are not resolved overnight”. The contract, awarded in 2022 by the previous government team, also includes an annual price review, the local executive pointed out, which is automatically applied and mandatory for the Town Hall regardless of the level of compliance with which the service is provided. “This is the contract that Mijas inherited and which this Department has to manage”, explained Belmonte.

The e-office now offers more than 360 online procedures The Executive highlights that the platform enables interaction with the local authority in a safer and faster environment Editorial Department

The Mijas Town Hall’s e-office, launched by the government team in June 2025, now offers citizens more than 360 procedures that can be carried out online. The interoperable general register, electronic files, official resolutions, electronic invoicing and the notice board, among others, are the main services included in this channel for engaging with residents. “The identification and authentication that are essential for operating through the e-office ensure that the data provided and received by citizens are protected”, emphasised the

councillor for Digital Modernisation, Juan José Torres Trella (PP). Faster processing Torres Trella pointed out that the e-office streamlines the internal processing of the matters that matter most to residents. This is because it eliminates several steps that were previously more numerous and timeconsuming when dealing with matters in person. Reaching a resolution and subsequently notifying the interested party is now much quicker. The eoffice also includes information on municipal departments and a link to the municipal transpa-

SOLIDARITY

Soroptimist donates food to support 520 families in Mijas Mijas Red Cross and the Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo Association will receive the food J.A. When it comes to helping others, it is always necessary to lend a hand and build support networks, especially for those going through difficult times or situations they cannot resolve on their own. With this aim in mind, Soroptimist International Costa del Sol has made a food donation intended for families in the municipality via the Mijas Food Bank, run by the Mijas Red Cross, and the Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo Association. The organisation has been collaborating with food banks in Mijas for over fifteen years. While this aid was traditiona-

lly provided at Christmas, this year Soroptimist wanted to extend its support to the summer period. The donation, worth 2,950 includes basic items such as sunflower oil, macaroni, rice and chickpeas, selected according to the families’ needs. The organisation emphasises the importance of finding out first-hand which products the families need most. “These are very basic foods, but we always consult the food banks to find

out what their needs are, and these are the products they have indicated are really needed”, explained Anette Skou, a member of Soroptimist Costa del Sol. Additional aid Sonia Hernández, a volunteer representative for Mijas Red Cross, explained that there is a wide variety of profiles among the families supported. “We have all kinds of families: with several children, single people,

couples…”, she noted. She also pointed out that “many are unemployed or in precarious jobs whose income is insufficient to cover basic expenses such as rent, electricity or water”. Hernández emphasised that Soroptimist’s donation complements the food that the Red Cross regularly receives from stores such as Mercadona and Hipercor, mainly fresh produce close to its expiration date. However, basic non-perishable foods are harder to come by, which is why this contribution is particularly important to

complete the food parcels intended for families. For his part, Miguel Ángel Lozano, a volunteer with the Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo Association, expressed his gratitude for Soroptimist’s support. “We are extremely grateful, because every year Soroptimist donates products that we really need. It’s a very important donation”, he said. Nueva Cultura explains that they currently support 220 families and that one of their main challenges is ensuring an even distribution of food.
