The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), presented the programme and poster for Mijas Fair on Thursday 13th; the event will take place from 7 to 12 September. The mayoress highlighted that the programme is very comprehensive and designed for families to enjoy, featuring headline performances by Camela, Medina Azahara, Marta Quintero and Alba Dreid. As Mata explained, the precursor to the fair will be on the 6th, when the opening address will be delivered by Mijas-born journalist Mari Carmen Jaime at the Miguel González Berral Auditorium in Mijas Pueblo from 21:00.

“We have worked with great enthusiasm to offer a varied, highquality programme that combines our traditions with contemporary offerings and invites both Mijeños and visitors to experience our fair to the full”, said Mata.

During the presentation of the festivities programme, the mayoress unveiled the official poster for the Mijas Fair, which was designed by Mijas Comunicación. It is a “very special and symbolic” composition in which last year’s king and Queen, Paula González and Víctor Pulpillo, appear alongside a horse, with the chapel of Our Lady, the Virgen de la Peña directly behind them. Following on from the fairs in Las Lagunas and La Cala, Mijas Fair is beginning to take shape as its key figures are revealed. Mijas-born journalist Mari Carmen Jaime, a resident of the Barrio Santana, will deliver this year’s opening address for the festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Peña.

This was announced on Wednesday 12th by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who welcomed her at the Town Hallin the morning and praised her communication skills and involvement in local’ traditions: “She has a very natural way of expressing what she feels; she’s one of those people who doesn’t hold anything back. And I hope that on that day, when she takes centre stage as the official announ-

cer of our festivities in honour of the Virgen de La Peña, she will be able to convey that sentiment, communicate it, and in some way make all of us in Mijas feel proud to call Mijas home”.

For the mayoress, this is a very fitting choice, as the announcer carries the name of her hometown wherever she goes.

“Mari Carmen embodies the values of our town better than anyone else. She is a young professional who always flies the flag for Mijas, so she, more than anyone else, will do a brilliant job delivering the opening address”, said Mata, adding that “it has been a well-deserved choice”, highlighting among other qualities her belonging to “a family that is part of many traditions, if not all of Mijas’ traditions”.

The official announcer, who had not expected to be chosen, invited the people of Mijas to the event. “The important thing is that they have a good time and enjoy themselves, and that I encourage them to come to the fair because I believe that’s the essence of an opening address”, emphasised the journalist.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied by the councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP), outlined on Monday 10th the implications of reducing the municipality’s average payment period (APP), which now stands at 27 days, three days below the legal requirement.

Among other points, the Town Hall highlighted that, if this trend continues, it will be able to allocate the treasury surplus to financially sustainable investments.

“Today, we can say that the average payment period for the Mijas Town Hall is 27 days. This has been a daily endeavour, the result of the efforts of many municipal staff and of teamwork”, said the mayoress. “Today’s message is not

gradually reduce this average payment period and other financial indicators, we will be able to make financially sustainable investments.

And what does that mean? It means that we will be able, among other things, to deliver that muchneeded care home for the elderly”, explained Mata.

More formal tendering The mayoress emphasised that the average payment period currently stands at 27 days, which is almost three days below the legal limit.

This figure, the local government stressed, “is a real milestone, as it is the best figure since January 2018” .

“We are complying with the law. And that is thanks to this effort and also to providing the Mijas Town Hall with all the necessary staff to ensure this could be achieved. The Budget Management Body, e-government, the organic regulations and the AntiFraud Plan are some of the measures that have helped to improve this figure”, said Mata.

For his part, Bravo explained that “we are carrying out weekly monitoring of invoices, so that every week we all know which invoices have arrived, where they are and who is responsible for them. With these measures, we have managed to meet this average payment period, bringing it down to under thirty days”, he explained.

The mayoress emphasised that results such as the reduction in the average payment period have helped to build greater trust among large companies, SMEs and the self-employed, placing Mijas “in the position it deserves and lea-

ving behind the erratic financial management of previous tems”.

Another advantage of complying with the law and remaining below the limit is that, if this trend continues, it will not be necessary to draw up an Economic and Financial Plan.

For his part, Bravo highlighted the work of the Mijas Town Hall staff in achieving this “milestone” of reducing the average payment period below the legal limit of 30 days, which has been in force since the approval, in 2012, of the Budgetary Stability and Financial Sustainability Act. Minor contracts Finally, Mata pointed out that the current government team has significantly reduced the use of minor contracts as a procurement method, in favour of formal tendering. On this point, she compared the “774 minor contracts signed by the previous government team (2019–2023)” with the 198 recorded so far by the current one.

The Mijas Town Hall is making progress on improvements to the comfort, use and enjoyment of the Gran Parque with the installation of up to 6,000 square metres of awnings that will provide shade for the children’s play areas, the squares, the central boulevard and the amphitheatre. Installation began on Tuesday 11th in the children’s play areas and will continue along the main promenade, where the support structures have already been erected.

This enhancement to the original project is included in the contract for the maintenance of green spaces and the cleaning of the facility, according to the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who visited the area on Tuesday to oversee the installation of the awnings alongside the councillor for Parks and Gardens, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP). These toilets feature universal accessibility. The work forms part of the Gran Parque’s cleaning and maintenance contract, which has an annual budget of 1.95 million euros and has been awarded to the joint venture (JV) comprising Inditec and Ituval.

In addition, two of the six permanent toilet blocks that will be featured at the Gran Parque in Mijas have already been installed, the mayoress added following her visit to the facilities.

“MIJAS GRAND PARK CONTINUES ITS GRADUAL FIT-OUT THANKS TO THE IMPROVEMENTS CARRIED OUT BY THIS GOVERNMENT TEAM. We are talking about basic amenities such as shade and toilets, but also parking spaces and plant species with lower water needs”, she said.

“Incredible as it may seem, this project did not contemplate any of these needs, but thanks to the commitment of this government team, we now have all three contracts for the Gran Parque formalised and underway, with all the services necessary for its proper operation”, added Mata.

This summer, Spain’s official burger championship returns to Mijas, specifically to the Las Lagunas fairground, from 20 August to 6 September. The Champions Burger continues to thrill the towns and cities it visits, and this year it brings two new features: the spectacle of its new ‘The Big Game’ tour, inspired by American football, and the introduction of ‘The Champions Cheesecake’, a space where top master pastry chefs create unique takes on traditional cheesecakes that are already among the most viral in the country.

The gastronomic event, which drew crowds to Mijas in 2025, is once again on the hunt for ‘Spain’s Best Burger’, but this time it’s raising the stakes: it’s bringing the spectacle and adrenaline of major NFL games. It will be a major event featuring 17 of the country’s top restaurants, which will arrive in Mijas in their famous food trucks, eager to showcase their skills. And on each day, the chefs will battle it

out to climb the rankings using technique and creativity to make their creation the winner.

Premium products In this edition, meat takes centre stage once again. Thousands of fans will enjoy premium cuts of certified origin, juicy and tender, cooked on a grill operating live for each burger, guaranteeing that burst of flavour only achieved over an open flame.

Then comes the show. Each chef will showcase their technique and personal style to surprise the audience with unexpected combinations. On this tour, there will be burgers on pretzel-style brioche buns or colorful artisanal versions, glazed, au gratin, mac and cheese croquettes, wood-smoked flavors, savoury jams, crunchy toppings, creamy homemade sauces and aromatic cheeses.

Mata (PP), presented the local government’s new scheme of grants for birth, adoption and foster care on Wednesday 12th. The local Executive stated that this is a “pioneering benefit”, for which the Town Hall will allocate a total of 100,000 euros.

The mayoress emphasised that this financial support is intended to help families in Mijas by offering an unprecedented benefit. She also stressed that the grant takes the form of financial family support and that there is no need to justify specific expenditure, as it is designed to cover initial needs.

“This is a new line of grants that we are introducing for the first time in our municipality with the aim of helping families. We believe that with these grants we can

help during those initial moments, such as the birth of a baby, a foster placement or an adoption. We announced these subsidies and we are delivering on them”, said Mata.

Requirements Specifically, parents, adoptive parents or foster carers who meet a series of requirements will be eligible: the birth, adoption or foster placement must have taken place between 1 January and 31 December 2025; they must have been registered on the municipal census (empadronados) in Mijas for at least five years; they must live with the minor at an address in Mijas on the date of application; they must be up to date with their tax and Social Security obligations; and they must

not be subject to any of the prohibitions set out in Article 13 of Law 38/2003.

An amount of 300 euros will be provided for each child, as indicated by the mayoress. In the case of multiple births, the adoption of more than one minor or the fostering of several children, the grant will be awarded for each child.

Mata also announced that the application period for this new financial scheme will open on 20 August and remain open until 10 September. Those interested can submit documentation via the online portal or at the municipal registration offices located at the Town Hall and the branch offices.

Ed. Dept. /N.L./M.F. Mijas’ Folk Night takes place on 19 August, this time in Plaza del Torreón in La Cala, where The Stolen Gnomes and Irish Treble will headline a new edition of this event, which forms part of the town’s summer programme. The show will begin at 22:00.

The head of Mijas Tourism Department, Juan Carlos Acevedo, emphasised that these events have a significance that “goes beyond the celebration itself”, as they help to broaden the range of activities Mijas offers to residents and visitors.

“A tourist destination is also built through the experiences it offers to visitors”, pointed out Acevedo, who recalled that the promotion of Mijas combines its traditional attractions, Mijas Pueblo, the beaches, heritage, gastronomy and golf courses, with a year-round cultural and leisure programme.

Acts This year’s event will feature The Stolen Gnomes and Irish Treble.

The latter group will present a programme that takes the audience on a journey from Iberian to

Irish folk, combining music and dance and introducing the public to different expressions of this genre.

Folk Night thus joins other nowtraditional musical events such as Latin Night, Blues Night and Jazz Night, which, according to Acevedo, help to project the image of Mijas as “a dynamic, cultural and open destination capable of offering a high-quality programme all year round”.

“Here at Tourism, we firmly believe that culture and music are also forms of tourism. Every person who comes to Mijas to enjoy a concert and shares their experience also becomes, in a way, a promoter of our destination”, he said. Acevedo concluded by inviting residents and visitors to enjoy the event and to experience something new.

C.L. The Mijas Pueblo Lions Club has put on sale a very special charity calendar. It includes three photographs by local artist Alejandro Jaime Núñez and another three by his father, Jesús Jaime, all numbered and signed.

The aim is to raise funds for the construction of a water well and all the necessary infrastructure in Kenya.

This project had been brewing since the beginning of the year.

According to Jean Michel Sancey, vice-president of the Mijas Pueblo Lions Club, “we wanted to do something different to encourage people to get involved.

We thought of a special, signed calendar and, naturally, we thought of Alejandro, and also his father, Jesús Jaime, who was

a member of ours”.

The young artist warmly welcomed the project and turned it into a high-quality charity photographic work, featuring six black-and-white and colour photographs. “The idea is for this to have continuity over time, so we chose a theme for the photos, schools, and selected three of my father’s in colour and three of mine in black and white”, said the photographer, Points of sale The calendar, which costs 50 euros, can be purchased at Alejandro Jaime’s various businesses, at the Mijas Pueblo Lions Club headquarters or at the CAC Mijas, as well as at several local businesses in the village.
