In Las Lagunas, the Virgen de la Peña, María Zambrano, Indira Gandhi, El Albero, Tamixa, Las Cañadas and Los Campanales schools will benefit from this measure, while in La Cala it will be the Los Claveles, Jardín Botánico, El Olmo and El Chaparral schools. The project must include, among other requirements, a foundation system, structural framework and earthing; the pillars must respect the two-metre obstacle-free safety zone; galvanised steel sheet roofing, with the finish incorporating thermal and acoustic insulation; rainwater collection; an electrical installation with LED lighting; and accessibility. These covers will cover a minimum area, depending on the school, of 164 square metres and a maximum of 1,408, totalling more than 9,000 square metres. “Last year we held a meeting with the various headteachers; each one chose the best court where the roof could be installed, and that signed decision has served as the starting point for drafting the te-

The council clarified that this project will encompass all the work required for the calculations and design, which will enable the definition of the work units and details for the subsequent tendering and execution of the works. San Sebastián School At San Sebastián School in Mijas Pueblo, the council noted, a different measure will be adopted. “After speaking with the school’s management, it became clear that the roof could not be
installed because the dimensions of the five-a-side football pitch did not allow for the installation to be carried out safely”, and they added that “given that the school’s fence is also very close to an embankment, other types of action will be carried out at that school, such as energy efficiency measures or replacing the windows”. The deadline for submitting tenders is 14th August. Once awarded, the successful company will have 90 days to draft the project. Afterwards, as Torres Trella pointed out, the contract for its execution will be put
out to tender, “with an estimated cost of approximately 4 million euros, and, as has been communicated in meetings with the school managements, the installation of these structures will take place when there are no children at the schools”, that is, outside term time; therefore, the councillor noted, “we hope that the execution of the work will take place in the summer of 2027”. Agreement with the Regional Government This investment is made possible by the cooperation agreement with the Regional Government of Andalusia, which will enable these sports areas to be used by the Town Hall “outside school hours, for educational, cultural, sporting or other social activities falling within its remit”, as set out in the agreement. For his part, the councillor for Education and Infrastructure stated that “this would not have been possible without the signing of this agreement for the use of the sports courts”, which enables the local executive to carry out this investment using its own funds. According to the Town Hall, these covers are expected to be fully installed by next summer.

GRAN HOTEL COSTA DEL SOL, A.M. The TRH Mijas Hotel, located in Mijas Pueblo, exceeded
the municipality’s average occupancy rate during July, reaching 95 per cent, compared to the 92 per cent recorded in the area. These figures confirm the strong performance of the high season and the destination’s consolidation as one of the Costa del Sol’s favourites. Bookings have maintained a steady pace throughout the summer, placing the establishment among those with the highest occupancy rates. This was confirmed by Ignacio Oliva, deputy head of reception at the hotel. Looking ahead to August: “We’re going to keep improving; our challenge is to continue growing and enhancing customer service, always with the aim of achieving better results”, he said. The British market remains the main source of tourists for this hotel, followed by visitors from Germany, the Scandinavian countries and the domestic market. This is a visitor profile seeking a quieter type of tourism, away from the most crowded areas. “It’s a very traditional, very authentic village, and these are the characteristics that attract tourists. Even though it is away from the coast, it has all the charm for people to enjoy their holiday”, emphasised Oliva.
ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHTAFTER DESTINATIONS A.M. /I.P. The Gran Hotel Costa del Sol, in La Cala de
Mijas, closed July with very good occupancy figures, noted its manager Manuel Camacho, “where we’ve achieved an occupancy rate of practically 97 per cent, with a huge number of guests and practically all hotel services operating at 100 per cent”, he highlighted, adding that “expectations for July have been more than met and we’re now working to ensure August is also a good month”. Of the total number of guests who stayed overnight at the hotel, the vast majority were foreign, pointed out Camacho, “with many British guests, followed by German, Nordic and French visitors, but July is when domestic tourism steps on the gas, particularly with last-minute bookings, which are working very well this year”. In fact, forecasts for August are similar to and even better than July, with an occupancy rate of 98 per cent, stated the manager.
Hotel La Zambra / J.P.
B.M./J.P. Mijas continues to establish itself as a luxury tourist
destination, as reflected in the occupancy figures for the La Zambra hotel, which stand at around 85 per cent this summer. Figures that the hotel describes as “positive”, bearing in mind that its model does not prioritise quantity, but rather service quality and the guest experience. In this regard, the hotel’s manager, Joost Kruissen, explains that “in terms of occupancy percentage, for us this is a very, very good number because we’re not looking to fill our hotel completely; we prefer a good average daily rate to offer the best possible service”. Furthermore, the hotel complex is recording better figures this year than last summer. This is detailed by Kruissen, who assures that “July has been positive. We’ve grown by almost 15 per cent compared to last year”. As for the visitor profile, La Zambra mainly receives international tourism, led by the US market, followed by the British, the Benelux countries and, in fourth place, domestic clients. “Now we need to build their loyalty so we can keep them for many years”, he added. Looking ahead to August, forecasts remain favourable, with very similar figures.

The Mijas Town Hall continues to carry out work to improve road markings in various parts of the municipality. On this occasion, Operational Services has intervened on Avenida Descubrimiento (La Cala), where the road markings for parking bays have been reorganised to optimise the available space, gain new parking spaces and promote smoother traffic flow. This work forms part of the road marking maintenance plan that the Town Hall is carrying out across various neighbourhoods and urbanisations. The councillor for Operational Services, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), explained that the initiative involved redistributing parking spaces to free up space and improve traffic flow. In addition to this intervention, the Town Hall has been working in other areas of the municipality over recent days. In La Ponderosa and Polarsol, pedestrian crossings

Councillor for Operational Services (PP)
“We have carried out marking work on the parking bays to gain more spaces and try to re-organise traffic flow. The work we are carrying out in conjunction with the Traffic Department and the painters from Operational Services has enabled us to take action in various areas of the municipality”
have been painted and repainted, while in Calahonda, outstanding tasks relating to dropped kerbs and spaces reserved for motorcycles and people with reduced mobility have been completed. “The work we are carrying out jointly with the Traffic Department and the painters from Operational Services has enabled us to act in several areas of the municipality this week”, the councillor emphasised. Work will continue over the coming weeks around school zones prior to the start of the new term, and subsequently in Mijas Pueblo once the fairground
structures have been dismantled. “Next week we will start near the schools and, afterwards, we will carry out work around Plaza Virgen de la Peña”, said Gómez Teruel. The aim of these measures is to continue improving road safety throughout the municipality. In this regard, the councillor announced the upcoming launch of the contract with the road marking company. “Sooner rather than later we will have the contract with the road marking company in place, and this will give the municipality a major boost”, he concluded.
J.P. The Cultural Centre in Las Lagunas is getting a makeover and sprucing itself up ahead of the start of classes at the UP this coming September. The Operational Services Department is in charge of this maintenance work. “The façade, part of the roof and the outdoor areas hadn’t had any work done for nearly eight years, and it was very much needed, as the image we want to project is that of a clean, orderly and well-maintained building”, said the councillor for Operational Services, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), adding that “a thorough cleaning of the building is also being carried out, along with repairs to water leaks”. Specifically, work has been underway at the centre for three weeks, so it is expected to be completed this week, as indicated by the councillor, following similar work at the La Cala Cultural Centre. This work was necessary, as pointed out by the councillor responsible for the UP, Silvia Marín
(PP), addressing the needs of students and teaching staff, all the more so given that around 4,000 registered users will be using this space during the coming academic year. “2,900 have renewed and the rest are new users. We believe and understand that the cultural centre, UP Mijas, must have properly conditioned spaces”, explained Marín. Furthermore, the councillor also announced that investments will be made in equipment. “We are in the process of purchasing ballet barre equipment for ballet classes, as well as missing materials and equipment for some of the other classes”. Finally, the UP has announced that enrolment is open until 10 September during office hours: from 09:00 13:30 on Mondays and Thursdays in Las Lagunas, and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in La Cala. In any case, Marín explained that places are almost filled due to high demand from participants, which she described as good news.
