Wrapped in a shawl and dressed in passionate red, as one would expect. This is how Rafaela Cuevas Quero took to the stage, tasked with delivering the opening address for the 2026 La Cala Fair on the evening of Tuesday 21st. Before a packed crowd in Plaza del Torreón, Rafi became the focal point of La Cala’s collective memory. A flamenco dancer and pillar of local folklore, she took over from her predecessor, Paco Lozano.

Memory and folklore Accompanied by a projection of a beautiful collection of archive photographs, Cuevas delivered a lively speech that went beyond mere anecdotes to become an essay on local history. The dancer steered clear of clichés and painted a vivid picture of the La Cala in which she grew up, paying tribute to the generations who forged its identity.

Indeed, her life story is inextricably linked to the evolution of La Cala. The daughter of Miguel and Pilar, “humble, hard-working” locals, the artist was born alongside her twin brother, Salvador, in an environment that was the polar opposite of today’s bustling tourist scene. Her early years were spent in a community of just a handful of families living a subsistence-based existence.

She also recalled her teenage years and the venue known as El Club, where her bond was forged with Lorenzo, the man who would become her husband, the father of her three children and her partner in adventures..

For the love of art

Passion for dance has been the backbone of Cuevas’s life. A love she has nurtured since she was a little girl and which has established her as a cultural institution both within and beyond our municipality. Her professional career is inextricably linked to the formation of the Sur de Andalucía dance troupe, a group that Rafi described as her “other great family” and with which she managed to break down barriers, creating choreographies to showca-

se the identity of La Cala de Mijas in squares, on stages, in auditoriums and in theatres both nationally and internationally.

Cuevas’s classes extended beyond El Club at first and later the UP, becoming a unifying force among young people. As Rafi recalled, she constantly kept her students on their toes to keep their commitment alive. This dedication to the group forged a bond that was evident during the tribute paid by her former students on the stage.

And in the end, after reflecting on a lifetime of memories, words gave

way to the language Rafi masters best: dance. To the vibrant beat, the town crier unfurled her Manila shawl, transforming the fabric into an extension of her own memories. Each turn was a symbol of the childhood longing forged among the unpaved streets of La Cala in the middle of the last century. The fluttering embroidery caressed the Mediterranean night breeze, bringing the event to a close not with a full stop, but with the unwavering testimony of a woman who has turned her life into the endless choreography of her village.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), inaugurated the festivities in the seaside town on Tuesday 21st, urging residents to take part and highlighting the event’s appeal to tourists. The mayoress, alongside the town crier Rafi Cuevas, cut the ribbon and, supported by members of the government team, pressed the switch that brought the illuminations to life.

The activities began at 19:00 with the Children’s Day celebrations. Following the switching on of the illuminations, the stage at the Municipal Boooth hosted,

in keeping with the tradition marking the first day of the festivities, the contest to select the fair’s leading representatives.

The anticipation was palpable among the audience as seven candidates presented their cases through three rounds designed under the direction of Víctor Rojas. Every movement on stage sought to win over the jury in a gala defined by enthusiasm and a deep-rooted sense of community.

The closing of the opening night called for a finale that lived up to expectations, and the unmistakable rhythm of technorumba was tasked with delivering it. The duo Mecamela, comprising the singers of Tamara Flores and Luis Liaño, delivered a vibrant tribute on stage to the legendary group Camela.

The senior citizens of La Cala took centre stage on the second day of the fair in the La Cala. Just over 250 pensioners and retirees took part last Wednesday 22nd in the traditional tribute dinner organised each year by the Mijas Town Hall, which was once again held in the Municipal Booth at the La Cala fairground.

As always, they were joined by the entire municipal council, staff from the Senior Citizens’ Department, the fair’s King and Queen and their maids of honour, and volunteers from Civil Protection and the Red Cross, among others.

The evening was thoroughly enjoyable, with a dinner that left nothing to be desired, comprising various starters, ‘porra antequerana’, pork loin with apple sauce and, for dessert, chocolate tourbillon with praline. Fortunately, it was a mild evening filled with music and enlivened by the Ritmo Andaluz band, which got more than a few diners out of their seats.

As is customary, the Senior Citizens’ Department also used this gathering to select by prize draw the Grandmother and Grandfather of the 2026 La Cala Fair. This year, these titles went to Maribel Bravo González and Manuel Maldonado Jiménez, who were presented with a bouquet of flowers and a smartwatch. Following this recognition, the councillor for the Senior Citizens, Silvia Marín (PP), addressed those present to thank them for

Thursday evening Halfway through the Cala fair, the children’s party took centre stage on Thursday 23rd, filling the booth with childrens in a very familyfriendly atmosphere. Each child was given a cone of sweets to enjoy during the event.

The youngest students from Victor Rojas’s UP dance groups filled

the stage with colour and artistry, performing flamenco dances. They were followed by the K-Pop troupe dancing to a style so popular among the little ones, inviting the whole audience to join in with the choreography to famous Korean hits.

During the children’s party, a draw was held to select the Baby and Children’s Kings and Queens.

This year, participation was very high, with around 200 children taking part in the draw.

The evening culminated in a concert featuring the greatest hits of the 80s and 90s by the band Playstar, taking adults back to those golden decades.

The Mijas Town Hall will step up the upkeep and repair of all public spaces in the municipality with an investment of around 5.7 million euros up to the year 2030. Streets, squares, paths, pavements, kerbs and other public road infrastructure will be covered by this initiative, which also includes a specific lot for the maintenance of the Coastal Path.

These works will be carried out under a contract that has just been put out to tender, with a deadline of 12th August for companies to submit their bids. The contract runs until 31st December 2028, although there is the option of two annual extensions, up to 31st December 2030. Each annual instalment has a budget of 1,217,899.99 euros (including VAT), except for the 2026 instalment, which will be adjusted in proportion to the date the contract is signed.

As explained by the councillor for Operational Services, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), “the company awarded the contract will provide support for minor repairs to be carried out in the municipality, as well as in public buildings and along the Coastal Path”, adding that “it will have to maintain an on-call team to ensure its services are available at weekends and on public holidays as well. This will ensure a service is provided from Monday to Sunday throughout the municipality”.

Resources With regard to the human resources specified in the contract tender, the minimum staffing level shall be 13 professionals: one technical liaison officer, two administrative staff, ten operational

For the specific service on the Coastal Path, the vehicle fleet must comprise at least one light vehicle for transporting maintenance crews and materials or tools; as well as four cordless drill drivers, two belt or random orbit sanders, two circular saws, one pressure washer and at least one site dumper.

Response times Furthermore, the applicant company’s commitment to reducing the maximum response time for urgent interventions to below the mandatory maximum time limit set out in the technical specifications (which is 24 hours) will be taken into account. This is

because incidents such as potholes, landslides, damaged signage or hazardous elements have a direct impact on public safety and and on preventing civil liability for the Town Hall.

Therefore, the Council explains, “a higher level of service in emergency response constitutes a quality factor objectively linked to the subject matter of the contract and quantifiable through verifiable time commitments”.

Social Inclusion Grant Scheme

The Mijas Town Hall has awarded a total of 500,500 euros in grants to nine social organisations in the municipality to run projects focusing on inclusion, social and labour market integration, occupational therapies and home care, among others.

These projects were approved based on their social value under the new General Grant Ordinance.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), welcomed representatives from the beneficiary organisations on Tuesday 21st: Adimi, the Spanish Red Cross, AFAM, Afesol, Apaffer, Aivomi, AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa, the Spanish Association Against Cancer and the Cudeca Foundation. The mayoress explained that the grants have been awarded to a total of 17 projects, “all designed to support those most in need and to help maintain the operation and long-term continuity of organisations deeply committed to the municipality”.

The 17 projects fall under four different categories. The first relates to the social and labour market inclusion of groups at risk of exclusion, with funding of

Competitive bidding process This grant scheme relates to the 2025 financial year as it reimburses projects already completed, in line with the Mijas Town

Hall’s new General Grant Ordinance, approved last November.

This ordinance changes how funds are allocated, moving from direct non-competitive grants to a competitive selection process based on prior submission and social utility.

Representatives at the event thanked the Mijas Town Hall for its commitment. The council has already prepared the new call for applications for 2026, to be published in the coming weeks so organisations can submit their

projects.

“On behalf of Cudeca, we would like to thank the Mijas Town Hall and the entire Social Inclusion team. It is not just about the money; these grants give NGOs the stability and sustainability to keep going”, said medical director and manager Marisa Martín. Regarding Cudeca’s project, she added: “It provides end-of-life home care for cancer patients in Mijas. Last year, we cared for 145 local residents, providing them with a

team comprising a doctor, a nurse, a psychologist, and a social worker”.

The president of Afesol, Cristian González, also expressed his gratitude to “the Mijas Town Hall and the entire technical team. When it comes to mental health, which is our area, we cannot ignore that more and more young people are struggling and attempting suicide, that is the reality. One in four people will face a mental health issue in their lifetime”.

The Mijas Town Hall is moving forward with its parking plan following the award of contracts for the projects next to CEIP Indira Gandhi School in Las Lagunas and Barrio Santana in Mijas Pueblo.

Together, both facilities will provide over 650 parking spaces (an estimated 250 and 424 respectively), significantly boosting the town’s parking capacity in both areas.

According to the councillor for Procurement, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), the design contract for the car park next to CEIP Indira Gandhi Primary School has been awarded to Ingeniería Atecsur SL for 13,148.35 euros, with a 60-day deadline. This means the Town Hall will receive the technical plans in less than two months and can then put the construction

A similar situation applies to the Barrio Santana car park, where the contract was awarded to a joint venture formed by Ingeniería Atecsur SL and Roma Ingenieros.

This contract is valued at 72,756.53 euros with a 120-day delivery deadline.

Commitment to the Mijas coastline The Environment Department, Creamar Mijas group, and Diving with Nic team up for a clean-up day at Royal Beach M.L. Throughout the year, local beaches undergo essential maintenance and cleaning to preserve the coastline and marine environment.

To reinforce these efforts, the Mijas Environment Department organises awareness-raising initiatives in partnership with local action group Creamar Mijas, part of the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation environmental volunteering platform in Málaga. On Friday 17th, around

15 volunteers from Mijas collected waste from Royal Beach in Calahonda, combing the area for litter, plastics, and glass bottles.

Any adult living near the target beaches can join these teams following a selection process. Volunteers receive training, equipment and insurance to carry out monitoring, clean-up operations, and environmental reporting. Working closely with local authorities and

official coastal surveillance services, the initiative also responds quickly to pollution incidents, marine wildlife sightings and strandings, nesting events, reforestation, habitat restoration, and environmental education, among other matters.

The councillor for the Environment at the Mijas Town Hall, Marco Cortés (PP), highlighted the importance of raising awareness among beachgoers so they do not leave litter on the sand, which frequently ends up in the sea. snorkelling team from Diving with Nic, which collaborates on these activities by cleaning and monitoring the seabed, was unable to dive due to sea conditions, but will be running an interpretative snorkelling session to raise awareness of the marine wealth of our coastline.

The department thanked these

volunteers for their participation, as well as the Royal Beach beach bar, which helped out by providing refreshments. Clean-up work using machinery is continuing, but the help of these volunteers completes the care of our coastline and demonstrates a commitment to the environment in Mijas.

Bingo Summer Night brings a lively atmosphere and prizes to Plaza del Torreón

Mijas auditorium has further consolidated its summer cultural offering with a new edition of Blues Night, held on Friday 17th. Organised by the Tourism Department, The initiative combines tourism promotion with social commitment in a freeentry show that packed out the venue.

The councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), highlighted the high calibre of the line-up, describing it as “a concert featuring top-class artists; the support act is great, but the headline band is the best in the country”. The councillor emphasised the diversity of the local programme, stating that “there’s something for everyone; with options to suit all tastes”.

The evening kicked off with a performance by A Piece of Janis.

“We formed to pay tribute to Janis Joplin around her 50th anniversary”, explained band member Fran Malpica.

Meanwhile, his bandmate Carlos Campos praised the nature of the event, noting that it was “a great, free charity event where everyone just gave whatever they wanted, so you couldn’t ask for more”.

Tribute to an icon The highlight of the night came with the Vargas Blues Band, one of the most highly regarded acts on the Spanish blues scene, who showcased their mastery on stage.

The bar was managed by Mijas Sports Club, rounding off a comprehensive leisure experience.

Rubén García, promoter at Más Animación, confirmed that this was precisely the vision behind the initiative.

Kilos of food donations The only requirement for entry was donating a kilo of non-perishable food for Cáritas. “The team at Cáritas are collecting a huge amount of food; it’s important to remember that, even though entry is free, this is a charity concert”, emphasised Jerez, who welcomed the opportunity to offer “a truly fantastic blues concert that draws a bigger crowd every year”.

Indeed, the public response validated the municipality’s blend of music and solidarity.

Local resident Salvadora Sánchez summed up the general feeling about the auditorium’s varied programme: “Blues tonight, jazz the other day, I love it, I really do”.

J.Ayora. Summer is all about parties, friends, the beach and board games too. Last Friday, 17th of July, Plaza del Torreón in La Cala hosted Bingo Summer Night, an event organised by the La Cala de Mijas Youth Association which brought together dozens of locals and visitors for a lovely summer’s evening with live music. The evening was packed with surprises, gifts and an atmosphere characterised by togetherness and fun.

The La Cala de Mijas Youth Association is an organisation committed to encouraging youth participation and dynamism through leisure initiatives, socio-cultural excursions, sporting activities and other social projects aimed at fostering young people’s involvement in the life of the municipality.

On this occasion, families, children and, in particular, young people took part in an event that stood out for its welcoming and festive atmosphere. Furthermore, those

attending had the chance to win numerous prizes, including charcuterie boxes, beach hampers, board games and many other surprises to enjoy over the summer.

The success of this initiative was already evident in its first edition, held last year. For this reason, the association’s president, Paula Moreno, was keen not to miss the opportunity to repeat the experience: “The previous bingo event was such a success that we wanted to do it again”, she said, emphasising that the event also had a fundraising aim: “to raise funds for the bar at La Cala day fair”, which is taking place this week.

Moreno revealed that the La Cala de Mijas Youth Association’s programme will continue throughout the summer with activities such as Youth Week, which will take place from the 24th to the 30th of August, and will conclude with a big farewell party “which will also include another bingo session”, the president noted.

PERFORMANCES

Flamenco fills Mijas Pueblo with a complementary summer programme Ed. Dept. Mijas Pueblo is reinforcing its commitment to Andalusian folklore and expanding its summer cultural programme with a new leisure initiative to be held every Monday at 22:00.

The series of performances begins on Monday 27th July and will run until 17th August in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña. This extension to the programme will run alongside the daytime performances already underway, meaning that, from 15th July, Mijas Pueblo will once again host two weekly shows: on Wednesdays in Plaza Virgen de la

Peña, and on Saturdays in Plaza de la Constitución, at 12:00.
