The Mijas Town Hall has now completed construction of the Los Santos car park in Las Lagunas, following an investment of 15.7 million euros. The town’s mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), visited the facility, which will have space for 272 vehicles, on Thursday 16th of July, announcing that it will open in September. The mayoress, who visited the car park alongside the councillor for Infrastructure, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), stated that “the facility will improve mobility in an urban area with long-standing parking issues”.

Town Hall sources emphasised that “the reorganisation of space has made it possible to create 38 more spaces than were included in the original project, meaning there will ultimately be 272 spaces rather than the 234 initially estimated, all keeping the dimensions originally planned”, said Mata, who also noted that “there will ultimately be 200 spaces for permit holder, which have already been allocated by public draw among local residents at a price of 50 euros per month”. This draw was held last March among all applicants.

The remaining 72 spaces will operate on a short-stay rotation basis, meaning they can be used by any driver upon payment of the corresponding parking ticket.

Furthermore, the mayoress apologised to all residents for the inconvenience caused in the area during this time and highlighted the high complexity of the project.

INVESTMENT

Last March, the roads surrounding the car park were opened to traffic. The Los Santos car park occupies almost the entire underground area of the La Cala, Mijas and Los Olivos squares, connecting them all via Calle San Matías in a fourstorey structure.

Access The project includes two ramps located on the central traffic island: an entrance ramp via Calle San Jorge (connecting to Plaza de La Cala) and an exit ramp via Plaza de Mijas. It also features two fully accessible external pedestrian entrances (stairs and a lift).

The new Los Santos car park will have 272 spaces, 38 more than originally planned. Following a reorganisation 200 spaces will be available on a resident permit scheme, allocated by public draw, for 50 euros per month.

20 workers deployed to schools

Painting, plumbing, lighting, cleaning and repairs among the tasks underway I.P. On Wednesday 15th, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied by the councillor for Education, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), visited the maintenance work being carried out by the Town Hall at CEIP El Chaparral in La Cala. This work will take place in July and August across all infant and primary schools, aiming to keep the facilities in optimal condition ahead of the new school year.

Twenty municipal workers are carrying out this maintenance work every day in “all schools in Mijas, where cleaning, painting, plumbing and flooring repairs will be carried out”, as well as “standardising waste bins, for example, so that the schools look their best ahead of the start of the new school year”, said Mata. According to the Town Hall, the workers are assigned to the Education Department, although the Energy and Occupational Risk Prevention services are also involved.

Torres Trella added that “when the school year ends, we begin intensive maintenance and repair work, as there are tasks that cannot be carried out when the children are in the clasrooms”. The

councillor stated that this year, “as a new development, we have had air-conditioning units installed under the Andalusian Regional Government’s scheme”. However, from the Town Hall’s side, “we manage the maintenance of all these units to ensure they work properly and, as the electrical installations were not done correctly in some schools, we have had to make minor modifications”, he explained.

Urgent works In addition, specific works are being carried out at four schools with more urgent needs. At CEIP Virgen de la Peña, the playground in the infant area is being repaired, along with the drainage pipes in the kitchen, toilets and dining hall. At CEIP Las Cañadas, the windows are being repaired, while walls and fences are being painted. Meanwhile, fencing is being installed at CEIP San Sebastián, and the perimeter fence around the infant area at CEIP Jardín Botánico is being repaired. All this work is being carried out in accordance with current legislation governing the local authority’s responsibilities in education.

The Mijas Town Hall has made a big data tool available to tourism businesses, allowing them to monitor up to 19 sector indicators and their trends in real time, allowing them to improve and adapt their offering to meet demand. The mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), presented this tourism intelligence resource on Wednesday 15th at the third meeting of Mijas Lab, alongside the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), at a meeting held at El Capricho beach bar.

The tool, which can be accessed via the mijas.es website, has been developed by Turismo y Planificación Costa del Sol, a body under the Malaga Provincial Council. It provides data on aspects such as accommodation supply, tourist density in the area, hotel prices, employment, tourism businesses and forecasts for arrivals at Malaga Airport, among others. “The aim is to start utilising this essential information to understand the situation and set targets for the different tourist seasons”, said Mata. This data is updated weekly.

tes, outlined the benefits of having a tool such as this, which is now available to all tourism business owners in the municipality. Access, however, is open to the public.

New Coastal Regulations Meanwhile, the Mijas Lab - Tourism Cluster discussed the new General Coastal Regulations proposed by the Spanish Government, which could significantly alter their operations, as they aim to introduce changes regarding concessions, their area – which would be reduced – and operating extensions. In this regard, Ana Mata pointed out that this mainly affects “those beach bars that are only open in summer, the ones that are set up and taken down. We have quite a few in our municipality and, to be honest, when you’re working to ensure that tourism and the beach can be enjoyed all year round, this sort of measure ends up harming a sector in which many families make a living from these establishments”.

of tourist areas, the vicinity of golf courses and the municipality’s hotels. On this point, Jerez noted that “we have been able to bring in the Civil Guard and the Local Police because the golf course sector is calling for greater security”.

Overcoming seasonality Mijas Lab also put forward initiatives aimed at overcoming seasonality. An increasing number of establishments in the sector are now operating all year round. The meeting also provided an opportunity to examine the sector’s figures for this season. The representative of the Costa del Sol Hotel Entrepreneurs Association (Aehcos) in Mijas, Juan Miguel Marcos, said that “in summer, hotel occupancy is forecast to be above 90 per cent”.

Ed. Dept. Tourism continues to strengthen its role in Mijas’s economy. According to the latest Social Security figures available, covering the second quarter of 2026, the municipality has 7,974 workers employed in the tourism sector, representing a year-onyear increase of 3.60 per cent.

Last week, the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), welcomed this growth, which confirms the sector’s importance as one of the municipality’s main drivers of the economy and employment. “These figures reflect tourism’s ability to create opportunities, maintain activity throughout the year and support thousands of families in Mijas”, he said.

Within the sector as a whole, accommodation and catering account for 5,539 jobs, 4.29 per cent more than in the same period last year. Catering employs 3,983 people, while ccommodation employs 1,556.

Jerez emphasised that behind these figures lies the daily effort of business owners, the self-employed, professionals and workers who help to maintain the quality and competitiveness of Mijas as a destination. “The

trend in employment shows that the sector remains strong, but it also compels us to continue working hand in hand with those who have first-hand knowledge of its reality and needs”, he explained.

Hospitality sector The hospitality sector currently comprises 409 businesses in Mijas, up 0.49 per cent from a year ago, and accounts for nearly half of tourism-related employment and the business fabric linked to the sector. For Jerez, these figures reinforce the need to maintain constant dialogue with the sector and to adapt municipal planning to the actual trends in the sector.

The councillor also highlighted the importance of continuing to make progress in reducing seasonality and promoting segments such as sports tourism, golf, gastronomy, rural tourism and cultural offerings. “Mijas has the potential to continue generating activity beyond the summer. Our challenge is to work alongside industry professionals to consolidate a competitive tourism model capable of creating stable employment and extending its benefits to the municipality”, concluded Jerez.

The Local Police Department has acquired a new mobile police office that will enable officers to draft reports, take statements and complete numerous administrative procedures directly at the scene, without having to return to police headquarters.

The councillor for Local Police, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), noted at the presentation on Thursday 16th that “we are talking about a tool that will allow practically all necessary procedures to be carried out without leaving the scene”, an improvement which, the councillor assured, will reduce travel, shorten processing times and keep officers deployed where they are needed.

In practice, the new unit

functions as a fully equipped mobile office.

“The gain in operational efficiency is immense, because officers will be able to assist members of the public, take statements, look up information, draw up documentation and print off reports directly from the scene”, explained Cuevas, who emphasised that this capability will enable a faster and more effective response.

The vehicle can be used at road traffic accidents, police checkpoints, preventative operations, large-scale events, emergencies and incidents requiring a prolonged presence. Centralising management from the vehicle will prevent officers from having to leave the scene to carry out paperwork.

For Cuevas, strengthening material resources has a direct impact on safety and the quality of service.

ENVIRONMENT

The Town Hall steps up water and beach sand quality controls B.M./N.L. The Mijas Town Hall has updated its contract to monitor water quality in streams flowing into the sea, as well as beach sand, to ensure the health and safety of bathers during the summer. This was confirmed on Tuesday 14th by the counci-

llor for the Environment, Marco Cortés (PP), who emphasised that “Mijas is a tourist destination with large numbers of people during the summer, and we must guarantee everyone’s safety through our department”.

“If we are to expect our officers to respond effectively, we also have a duty to equip them with the best tools”, stated the councillor, who added that “every resource we introduce allows them to spend more time on the streets, protecting and serving our residents”.

“A well-trained local police force also needs modern tools adapted to the situations they face every day”, concluded Cuevas, emphasising that the new vehicle “will improve working conditions”.

With this new unit, the Local Police Department continues to strengthen and modernise its resources, a line of work which, as noted in a press release, has included the introduction of new motorcycles, the reactivation of the Cycling Unit and the gradual upgrading of the equipment used by officers serving the municipality.

Ed. Dept. Endesa’s new transformer station in Las Cañadas will improve the electricity supply from next month for more than 2,000 local residents, who have historically suffered from grid failures that have constantly disrupted their daily lives. Trenching and underground cabling work could be completed by next week.

The new transformer station, which is now complete, is connected to the Las Cañadas substation and will serve this neighbourhood exclusively. The installation of new cabling, ducting and connections is currently underway and nearing completion, paving the way to replace equipment that is over 40 years old.

According to the councillor responsible for Energy Efficiency, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), “residents contacted us last year

testing carried out by the Andalusian Regional Government on coastal bathing waters. Furthermore, the contract provides for the regular testing of beach sand.

According to Cortés, “we have to guarantee not only the quality of the seawater, but also the water that flows in via the streams.

This allows us to prevent any potential discharges they might carry”.

The contract, which covers the summer period, began in June and will remain in force until the

end of September. It has a duration of two years, with the option of an extension, and an approximate annual budget of 11,000 euros. The contracted company carries out tests on a fortnightly basis.

So far, the analyses carried out “have been favourable”, said Cortés. Detecting any negative results would help identify potential discharges, which, as the councillor pointed out, are illegal and can lead to fines or even be classified as an environmental

The La Cala Fair is just around the corner, and this year it brings a few new features. The most significant change concerns the opening proclamation, which on this occasion will take place on the first day of the fair, Tuesday 21st of July, at 21:00. This year, the person tasked with delivering this opening address for the festivities will be Rafi Cuevas, a woman whose roots are deeply intertwined with the coastal village.

For the first time in the municipality, the proclamation will kick off the La Cala festivities, and it will take place in Plaza del Torreón. This was announced by the mayoress of the municipality, Ana Mata (PP), who also noted that “this year we are moving this opening address to the first night of the fair, before the official inauguration, and I am convinced

that Rafi Cuevas will deliver a very moving speech, touching on many moments in the history of La Cala that I’m sure many residents will remember”.

For her part, Rafi Cuevas said she was thrilled to be able to address the people of La Cala, while being fully aware of the responsibility this entails. “For me, it’s

Rafi Cuevas has been teaching dance since 1974 and, under her guidance, her students have taken part in numerous festivals, winning awards in countries such as Mexico, China and Oman. To speak of Rafi Cuevas is to speak of sevillanas, tanguillos, rumbas and alegrías, but we’d rather invite you to her opening address on the 21st of July. Following this, at 22:30, the celebrations will move to the fairground, where local authorities will inaugurate the festivities with the traditional switching on of the fairground lights.

Also on that day will be the La Cala Fair King and Queen Contest; registration remains open until this Friday 17th, either via the municipal registry or through the Town Hall’s online portal.

Last Thursday 16th, La Cala de Mijas once again demonstrated its devotion to the Virgen del Carmen.

Residents and visitors accompanied the Queen of the Seas during a moving procession that wound its way through the town’s main streets before heading out to sea.

The celebrations began at 20:00 at the Church of Santa Teresa de Jesús, where the parish priest Fernando Luque celebrated Mass in

honour of the patron saint of sailors, accompanied by the priest from Mijas Pueblo, Herman Marcel Lunar. Once again this year, the ceremony featured the choir of the Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno from Alhaurín el Grande.

After the Mass, the Virgen del Carmen left the church surrounded by the devotion of the people of Mijas, accompanied also by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who said that “it has been a very beauti-

ful and welcoming Mass. We have experienced some moving moments with so many devotees and so many people lining the streets”.

Also accompanying the image was the first deputy mayor of Mijas, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), who said with emotion: “It has been very beautiful. The Virgin is our star who lights our way, and I ask her to grant Mijas good health”.

Its president, Rosa Espadas, stated that “we’ve done a fantastic job because we’ve had such a high turnout. The

town has truly rallied, and there’s a great deal of enthusiasm on the streets this year”.

One of the most moving moments came when the image arrived at Torreón Beach. There, the Stella Maris was carried to the shore before setting off on her boat journey through the waters off Mijas.

Opposition councillors were also in attendance, including the PSOE councillor, Josele González, who emphasised that “today evokes a special feeling and many families are gathering to enjoy the festivities”.

Carlos Huesa receives official appointment as Adopted Son of Mijas in person Ed. Dept. On Monday 13th, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), welcomed scientist Carlos Huesa Berral to the Town Hall to officially recognise him as an Adopted Son of the municipality.

The researcher, who specialises in the fight against cancer, was unanimously honoured by the municipal council at the ordinary plenary session on the 23th of June. The mayoress, accompanied by the deputy mayor, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), announced that the official ceremony will take place in December.

For Huesa, a Málaga native whose mother is from Mijas and who has had close ties to the town since childhood, this recognition represents much more than an honour. He stressed that he does not want the appointment

to be limited to the institutional ceremony, but wishes to turn it into a commitment to the town, declaring: “I feel a moral and ethical duty to my town to bring research and science closer to young people”.

Mata highlighted Huesa’s career and described him as a role model for young people, “because he has shown that, with hard work, effort and dedication, you can achieve great goals and contribute to society to make it a better place every day”.

The Tourism Department has launched the Summer Night Market, an initiative running until the 20th of August, from Monday to Thursday between 20:00 and midnight in Plaza Virgen de la Peña, which aims to promote local businesses while people enjoy the summer season in the village.

If you’re a blues lover, you can’t miss this event on Friday 17th of July. The Miguel González Berral Municipal Auditorium in Mijas Pueblo will host a charity evening dedicated to the genre, featuring ‘A Piece of Janis’, a tribute to Janis Joplin performed by Málaga-born Noe Sakura, and a headline

performance by the Vargas Blues Band.

This concert is part of the cultural programme organised by the Mijas Town Hall’s Tourism Department and will have a strong charitable focus.

With the involvement of Cáritas, attendees are invited to contribute by donating a kilo of non-perishable food or personal hygiene products.

The music will begin at 22:00 with a tribute by Noe Sakura, whose set list will feature some of the American artist’s greatest hits. They will be followed by the Vargas Blues Band, with over 30 years’ experience performing on stages across Europe and the Americas and a discography comprising more than ten albums. Admission is free and open to all.

A.L. Mijas Pueblo has once again been hosting its traditional free flamenco performances since Wednesday 15th, an initiative the municipality has offered for years.

The programme features two weekly performances, both at 12 noon. On Wednesdays, the show takes place in Plaza Virgen de la Peña, while on Saturdays it is held in Plaza de la Constitución.

On Friday 10th, the La Cala Branch Office hosted the launch of the ACEC, the Asociacion Caleña de Empresarios y Comerciantes (La Cala Association of Business Owners and Traders), which has been set up to meet a need among local businesses. “Above all, it will act as a bridge to the Town Hall and provide a direct point of contact, something we have been lacking in La Cala”, said the president of this new association, Juan Antonio Gambero.

Now that the association has been officially launched, the focus is on recruiting members “and listening to their requests and proposals so we can pass them on to the Town Hall and, as

far as possible, work towards the common good”, said Gambero.

The event was attended by local authorities, including the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who highlighted the importance of this association for La Cala, which generates so much wealth for the municipality. “We simply need to listen to those who have proposals or needs and, together, resolve those issues for which we have responsibility or jurisdiction, while also planning and drawing up a roadmap from which we can

N.L. Last Saturday 11th, the Miraflores Golf Restaurant hosted a Caribbean-themed charity dinner in aid of Ace Shin, the animal charity based in La Cala de Mijas. The event

brought together around a hundred members, volunteers and supporters with a common goal: to raise funds to care for abandoned dogs and cats.

During the evening, guests also took part in a charity raffle, with all proceeds going towards covering basic needs such as food, veterinary care and the upkeep of the facilities.

The event also featured live music from vocalist Mark T. Connor. A total of 2,300 euros was raised.

Ace Shin currently cares for a large number of rescued animals, awaiting a permanent home. In addition to its centre in Mijas, the charity runs another animal shelter in Algeciras. Between them, the two facilities house around 700 dogs and cats, representing a significant financial and human effort.

The association highlights that any support, whether financial, through volunteering or adoption, is vital to enable them to continue their work in animal protection and welfare.
