Acosol, the local water supply operator in Mijas, handed over the project carried out in La Majadilla del Muerto to the residents’ association on Wednesday 1st. The project, executed by the public company, brings drinking water to more than 272 plots; once handed over, the association will take over its management, while Acosol will handle the domestic supply.

The ceremony was attended by Matilde Mancha, CEO of Acosol, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), councillor for Operational Services and representative of the Western Costa del Sol Association of Municipalities in Mijas, and neighbourhood representatives.

by Acosol with advance funding of 1,600,770.96 euros.

The commissioning of this new network will provide homes with a more reliable water supply, reducing incidents arising from alternative supply systems and improving water pressure and the continuity of the service.

The mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), highlighted the completion of a much-needed project that had been long requested by local residents,

“which demonstrates that institutional and civic cooperation, and management that prioritises the needs of those living in outlying areas, are very important to the Town Hall and to Acosol”. In this regard, the mayoress pointed out that the project underwent several improvements during its development, which have made it possible for a greater number of residents to benefit than originally envisaged in the first phase.

For his part, the councillor for Operational Services wished to “thank the residents for the financial contribution they have made to en-

sure this project became a reality”.

According to Gómez Teruel, “we at the Town Hall have been keeping a very close eye on the work being carried out there, as we needed to monitor all aspects of the water supply system, the reservoir, the elevations, the gradients, the inlet and outlet, and we have always worked hand in hand with the company carrying out the work”.

Mari Ángeles Fuertes, a resident of La Majadilla del Muerto, highlighted the long struggle the community has endured to secure this basic service. As she explained, the residents “have been fighting

and working tirelessly for years, ever since 2023, when the purchase of the land earmarked for the reservoir was finalised”.

Fuertes pointed out that the ceremony held on Tuesday “was a sort of preliminary agreement, as the final signing could not take place due to technical issues” and is scheduled to be completed next Monday, 6th of July. She also said that the community is looking forward to this moment with great enthusiasm.

“They’re desperate to have water already”, she said. She also expressed her gratitude for the support received throughout the process.

TRANSPORT

Intertown shuttle bus service improved to facilitate mobility and parking E.D. The Mijas Town Hall is “improving” and “facilitating” mobility and parking in the municipality with the new shuttle bus contract.

This public transport service will run from the parking areas designated by the Town Hall to the centres of Mijas Village, La Cala and Las Lagunas, including return journeys.

The aim is to ease traffic, reduce journey times, make mobility easier and prevent overcrowding.

The contract, awarded to the joint

venture (UTE) Mijas Lanzadera 2026, comprising the companies Paco Pepe, Sierra de las Nieves, San Sebastián and Daga Portillo Hermanos, runs until December 2027 and has a budget of 497,174 euros. In addition, an optional two-year extension is planned until the end of 2029, meaning the total value of the contract would amount to almost one million euros if executed in full.

As explained on Saturday 27th by the councillor responsible for Ur-

ban Mobility, Marco Cortés (PP), “services will be contracted for a minimum of four hours and will run at a continuous frequency adapted to demand and the department’s specifications. If necessary, a system of timetables, stops and routes will be established”.

The Mijas coastline now flies its five Blue Flags at La Luna-Royal Beach, Riviera, El Bombo, El Chaparral and La Cala, alongside the other ‘S’ and ‘Q’ awards that certify the sustainability and overall quality of its beaches. The mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), took part on Thursday 2nd in the flagraising ceremony at El Torreón in La Cala, alongside staff from the Beaches Department headed by councillor Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), representatives of the lifeguard service and beach business owners.

It is worth noting that these five Blue Flags are awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), based on a proposal from the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), and will fly throughout 2026 and also in 2027.

They recognise four key areas internationally: water quality, environmental education, environmental management (cleanliness)

and safety and services (lifeguarding, access).

In addition to the Blue Flags, ‘Q’ for Quality flags were also raised (nine in total, at La Luna-Royal Beach, Alhamar, Calahonda, Riviera, El Bombo, La Cala, La Dorada, El Chaparral and El Charcón) and the ‘S’ for Sustainability (at the same nine beaches); the Blue Centre, which recognises El Torreón as an interpretation centre for the watchtowers on the Mijas coastline; and the Blue Trail, which recognises the Coastal Path.

The councillor for Beaches emphasised that these awards “are the result of hard work carried out throughout the year, because here in Mijas we work all year round to keep our coastline in perfect condition. It is true that it is very challenging due to the issues we face with invasive seaweed, which is causing so much extra work for our beaches”.

Speaking on behalf of the Tourism Department, Edmundo Alarcón (Vox), emphasised that “thanks to the international pro-

velopment at the Regional Government of Andalusia, stated that “we are in the top league when it comes to beaches. Málaga is the province with the most Blue Flags in the whole of Andalusia, and that benefits the entire autonomous community. We are a leading destination”.

For his part, Gómez Teruel stated that “in Mijas, we work on the beaches 365 days a year so that we can now reap the rewards of this effort and hard work in the form of these Blue Flags.

The chairman of the Mijas Beaches Business Association, Carlos Morales, stated that these results are down to “the work of everyone, not just business owners, but also the Town Hall, lifeguards, Operational Services, the Local Police… I’m very proud and very pleased”.

The Mijas Town Hall maintains a lifesaving and rescue service comprising 62 lifeguards who monitor the entire coastline; this is the best-staffed service of its kind in the whole of Andalusia. In addition to the team, one of the main new features of this service is the installation of a public address system to manage any emergency.

sed that the Beaches Department also stands out for its daily battle against the invasion of Asian seaweed, which requires staff and technical resources to work every night to clear thousands of kilos that wash up on the shores and have a wide-ranging impact, from environmental and tourismrelated effects to economic and purely visual ones.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), welcomed her counterpart, Nikolay Rashkov, mayor of the Bulgarian town of Gorna Oryahovitsa, last Wednesday 1st. The two municipalities signed a friendship agreement, which will form the basis for a future twinning arrangement between the two towns. “For us, this is a means of collaborating on various projects that we could initiate at European level”, said the mayoress.

The Town Hall has reopened the section of the Coastal Path near Las Mimosas, in El Bombo (La Cala), following the completion a few days ago of the repairs required due to the damage caused by the winter storms between the 19th and 21st of March. The mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), visited the area on Thursday 2nd, accompanied by the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP).

This is a 160-metre stretch that was severely damaged by the force of the waves, which also partially knocked down a section of the retaining wall of the Las Mimosas residential development, which borders the Coastal Path. The cost of the work, carried out by the company Sardalla Española, amounted to 304,000 euros.

Mata recalled that barely a week after the storm, the Infrastructure Department had already issued the required damage report, after which an emergency contract was put out to tender. “We had to act quickly because the damage to the walkway was compounded by that of the develpment’s wall”, explained the mayoress. “The speed with which the project was

completed means that walkers can now enjoy the Coastal Path and that local residents are safe”.

Force 7 winds It was Storm Therese, the nineteenth major storm of the 2025– 2026 season, which affected the Mijas coastline on the 19th, 20th and 21st of March. This adverse weather event was characteri-

sed by strong ‘Levante’ (easterly) winds, reaching force 7. The storm caused severe coastal conditions along the Costa del Sol, with wind gusts of up to 55 km/h and waves of between three and four metres high.

Mata noted that these coastal phenomena caused “significant damage to El Bombo beach, mainly in the form of sand loss and scouring of the foundations of the Coastal Path”. This led to the partial collapse of a section of the path and damage to the boundary wall of the residential development.

The reconstruction project involved dismantling and removing the wooden walkway affected by the storm; dismantling and removing the affected boundary wall of the Las Mimosas residential development; stabilising the ground on which the structure stands; and

driving wooden piles to a depth of at least one metre below sea level.

In addition, riprap protection has been installed below the sand level; the wooden structure has been erected, along with the decking, the handrail and the wooden bench; and, finally, the existing boundary wall of the urbanisation has been restored. The works took just over two months to complete.

The boardwalk resulting from this emergency intervention is once again three metres wide, as it was before the storm’s onslaught, Mata pointed out.

The mayoress indicated that it was also necessary to award an emergency contract to rebuild the section of the Coastal Path in El Capricho, which collapsed during the storms in late January and early February. In this case, it was reopened in mid-March following an investment of 224,000 euros.

SOLIDARITY

Cudeca celebrates the fifth anniversary of its charity shop in La Cala J.P. In June 2021, Cudeca opened its first charity shop in Mijas thanks to the collaboration of the Town Hall, which provided premises in La Cala free of charge. It marks five years of solidarity and support for the work of the Cudeca Foundation. “It has been a wonderful journey during which a community has been built; what’s more, at our charity shop in La Cala we have many British people and residents

of other nationalities who already have this concept fully integrated into their culture and have welcomed us with open arms from the very start”, said the commu-

nications manager for the Cudeca Foundation’s charity shops, Olalla Díaz, who emphasised that over the past five years, the opening of the shop “has enabled us to fund part of the palliative care provided

by Cudeca”.

On behalf of the Foundation, Díaz once again thanked “the Town Hall for providing us with this space entirely free of charge”.

There are currently 30 volunteers supporting the shop. They play a vital role in the Foundation’s structure, as Díaz pointed out: “We want to pay tribute, above all, to the people who began volunteering five years ago and remain committed”.

Mijas continues to consolidate its position as one of the Costa del Sol’s leading tourist destinations after closing the month of June with a hotel occupancy rate of 90.49%, according to figures published by the Costa del Sol Hotel Entrepreneurs Association (Aehcos). The town ranks as the third destination in the province with the highest occupancy rate, behind only Torremolinos and Benalmádena.

“Exceeding 90% occupancy in June confirms that Mijas remains a highly competitive and attractive destination for those choosing the Costa del Sol”, said the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), who noted these “are the result of the work carried out by the Department of Tourism, in collaboration with the sector, to promote the town and strengthen an increasingly diverse and high-quality tourism offering”.

The competition, as the mayoress explained, “aims to highlight the beauty of the path”, as it “hides gems that make our town unique”.

Anyone wishing to photograph the Coastal Path or its immediate surroundings may take part.

The competition will be divided into two main phases: until the 31st of July, photographs taken on the western section, between El Bombo/Las Mimosas residential estate and the Marbella municipal boundary, will be eligible; and from the 1st to the 31st of August, photographs taken between Los Cordobeses/La Butiplaya and Fuengirola will be eligible.

Prizes will consist of a dinner for two at any of the establishments partnering with this initiative. The judging panel will be made up of representatives from the participating establishments, who will select the winning photographs from among those submitted. Mijas joined in the celebrations for International LGBTIQ+ Pride Day, which took place on the 28th of June. However, as early as Friday 26th of June, the town marked the occasion with the reading of a manifesto at the Manuel España Theatre, in which the town’s mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), stated: “We renew that commitment to respect people’s feelings; we are free, and within that freedom we choose how we feel”. The manifesto calls for a society in which everyone can live freely, regardless of their sexual orientation. It was an event through which the Town Hall, the Andalucía Diversidad Federation and Orgullo Mijas sought to promote tolerance,

equal rights before the law, nondiscrimination and the dignity of people from these communities.

The president of Orgullo Mijas, Alberto Ortega, emphasised that “we are proud and delighted to be here today representing the community, even though it has only been 15 days since we were officially registered as an association by the Regional Government of Andalusia , the first association [of its kind] in the history of Mijas. In addition to the reading of the manifesto, on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th of June, an artist created a participatory mural open to all members of the

public to promote the visibility of diversity. On Thursday, an information stand called ‘Breaking Labels’ was also set up, which similarly promoted free expression, reflection and advocacy on these issues.

Las Lagunas enjoyed five days of the fair with activities for the whole family. “It’s a fair where, year after year, we introduce new features; this year, for example, we have brought back the horse parade, so the streets of Las Lagunas have also been a major attraction. And we have organised the Daytime Fair at Cortijo Don Elías, where locals have been able to enjoy, in that huge marquee which looked spectacular, with plenty to see and do”, said the town’s mayoress, Ana Mata (PP).

The mayoress highlighted that Las Lagunas kicks off the fair season in the town, “where we have three fairs: this one, which heralds the start of summer; the one in La Cala halfway through the summer;

and the one in Mijas Pueblo to mark the end of summer”. “They are not just a tourist attraction but a celebration for local residents to enjoy, because at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about: having a good time”, she concluded.

Security arrangements The fair featured extensive security provisions, including the Local Police, Civil Protection, the Mijas Fire Brigade and the Red Cross; as well as a cleaning operation to keep the fairground and Cortijo don Elías in top condition. The Department for Family and Equal Opportunities also set up a ‘Punto Violeta’ where, under the slogan ‘Respect without excuses’, information and advice were provided to ensure that people could enjoy the festivities free from violence and abuse, and in a spirit of respect.

Over the weekend, locals and visitors will also be able to enjoy juggling buffoons, belly dancing shows, musical performances and fire shows. In addition, the Miguel González Berral Municipal Auditorium will host the Andalusian Night from 21:30.

The councillor for Public Space, Melisa Ceballos (PP), invited “everyone to come and enjoy this medieval market, ‘Mijas with Soul by Candlelight’. “It’s won-

derful to see the village lit up by candles and to be able to enjoy all the activities, the fire shows and the workshops, set up both in La Muralla and throughout the rest of the village”, said the councillor.

Among the traders setting up their stalls at this year’s event is David Arca, head of Plantas Medicinales de Andalucía, who praised the atmosphere created by this event. “Every year we try to showcase all the good things we have to offer. Mijas is a beautiful place and, at night, with the candles, it creates an atmosphere that invites people to come and visit us”, he explained.

Shuttle bus To facilitate access to Mijas Pueblo, the Town Hall has set up shuttle buses running between 18:00 and 02:00.
