On Monday 15th, the mayoress Ana Mata and the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel, collected the ‘Q’ for Quality and ‘S’ for Sustainability awards that will fly at the beaches of La Luna-Royal Beach, Alhamar, Calahonda, Riviera, El Bombo, La Cala, La Dorada, El Chaparral and El Charcón.

The presentation of the certifications took place at a ceremony held at the Andalucía Lab building in Marbella, attended by the acting regional minister for Tourism of the Junta de Andalucía, Arturo Bernal. On the 13th of June, Las Lagunas kicked off the festivities with the proclamation in Andalucía Park.

Singer Melody, who lives in the town, was chosen as the town crier for the 2026 Las Lagunas Fair and Festivities. “We have put together a comprehensive and varied programme for all audiences, with the help and collaboration of all the groups that make up the Festivities Committee”, announced the councillor for Festivities and Traditions, Silvia Marín (PP).

Performances As for the musical performances lined up for the 2026 Las Lagunas Fair, the councillor for the department noted that “we will be welcoming artists such as Seguridad Social, Andy, Merche, Salma, Lorenzo Molina, alongside a flamenco night featuring artists such as Rancapino Chico, Farruquito and Jesús Méndez. The opening act will be provided by the great flamenco group of Isabel Guerrero, a Mijas-born artist and last year’s official town crier for the Las Lagunas Fair”.

This year’s Las Lagunas Fair also revives the traditional horse parade through the town centre, as announced by the councillor Silvia Marín (PP) during the presentation of the programme. In collaboration with the Livestock Department, “we have worked to restore the prominence of horses, so that they can have their own identity and their moment at our fairs, thanks also to the collaboration of the Peña Caballista de Mijas, which has worked hand in hand with both the Livestock and Festivities departments”, explained the councillor responsible for the department.

Equestrian enthusiasts will therefore be able to enjoy the horse ride taking place on Saturday 27th of June at 12 noon, starting from Finca el Cartujano, and following a route that will take in the Camino de Campanales, Emilio Prado, Goya and Velázquez

streets; Miguel Hernández and María Zambrano Avenues; Antonio Machado and Vicente Aleixandre Streets, ending at Cortijo Don Elías.

According to the councillor for Livestock, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), “it is a tradition that needed to be revived, and that is what we are working on; we believe it is very important and that it has gradually lost the significance it once had, so we want to bring it back for this Las Lagunas Fair”.

For her part, the president of the Peña Caballista de Mijas, Ana Guerrero, was delighted with the news: “We’re very pleased because this tradition hasn’t taken place for 10 years. We’re going to open the day fair with the horse ride and we think people are going to love it”.

The Town Hall is asking participants to attend dressed in traditional costume and to take part in the event.

The Town Hall also announced that, between 19:00 and 21:00 each day, both the music and the sound of the fairground rides will be turned off so that children with special needs can enjoy the fair without acoustic barriers.

This Saturday, the 20th of June, we have another musical event, this time at the Miguel González Berral Municipal Auditorium in Mijas Pueblo, with a new edition of Jazz Night, organised by the Tourism Department. “We are committed to promoting this type of activity, which boosts the local economy and allows us to show tourists everything Mijas has to offer. On this occasion, it also features a charitable element, and admission will be in the form of non-perishable food items for the Mijas Food Bank”, said Fernando García, from the Mijas Tourism Department.

He also highlighted the charitable nature of this musical event: “As well as enjoying a great night of music, those attending will have the opportunity to support a good cause. We believe that culture and solidarity are two values that can and should go hand in hand”, he said.

On Monday 15th, near the Torreón de La Cala, the Mijas Town Hall launched the Local Police’s cycling unit, which will resume service during the peak months on the Mijas coast, enhancing safety for both residents and visitors.

The unit will consist of officers patrolling the Coastal Path and the municipality’s main beach areas daily, carrying out preventive work, ensuring compliance with municipal bylaws, and monitoring activities that could affect community life and the enjoyment of these public spaces. The councillor for Public Safety, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), highlighted

that this unit allows for a closer and more effective presence in one of the busiest areas during the summer. In this regard, he explained that “the presence of officers on the ground has a significant preventive effect and helps ensure that residents and visitors can enjoy our coastline with greater safety guarantees”.

Additional resources Cuevas Dawson also pointed out that this initiative is part of the additional resources deployed by the Town Hall during the summer season, praising the work carried out by the Mijas Local Police. “We remain committed to providing our officers with the necessary resources to deliver the best possible service and to continue

This is the title of the campaign launched by the Andalusian Regional Government, presented on Thursday 18th in La Cala de Mijas by the Andalusian Government delegate in Málaga, Patricia Navarro, alongside the mayoress of the municipality, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP). The initiative, promoted by the regional government since 2019, aims to raise public awareness about the importance of safe behaviour on beaches, in swimming pools and rivers, preventing water-related accidents during the summer.

In the province of Málaga alone, 18 people lost their lives due to drowning that year. This is why the Regional Government remains committed to this campaign.

“In Málaga, we have managed to reduce drowning deaths in aquatic environments by 35.7 per cent since 2019”, said Navarro, who called for a sense of responsibility, adding, “we must respect the water”. “We

work every year to prevent these drownings, mostly caused by carelessness, letting our guard down, overconfidence and recklessness”, the delegate explained during her speech, in which she placed particular emphasis on the ‘10-20’ rule, aimed especially at those supervising children. “You must look at the child at least every 10 seconds, and remain at a distance that allows

She reported that, over the past year, the 112 Emergency Service handled a total of 130 emergencies in the province of Málaga relating to maritime rescue and salvage operations on beaches, inland waters and swimming pools. “So far this year, more than fifty alerts have already been handled”.

there have been no fatalities in ten years, highlighted the town’s commitment to having the bestequipped lifesaving team in Andalusia. The service has been operational since early June, running from 11:00 and 20:00, to ensure the safety of bathers and visitors to the municipality’s 16 beaches. The team consists of 86 members, 62 of whom form the permanent crew while a further 24 carry out support duties.

Furthermore, Mata highlighted that a public address system has been installed on all the town’s beaches this year to ensure “immediate communication” with bathers and “to inform them of any incidents”.

M.L./C.G. The Mijas Town Hall, through its Sports Department, is opening the Osunillas outdoor municipal swimming pool this Friday 19th of June. The facility will be open every day until the 6th of September and will host swimming lessons for children and adults. As announced by the councillor for Sport, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), the Osunillas swimming pool will be open

from 14:00 to 20:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with the 12:00 to 14:00 slot reserved for swimming lessons, and from 12:00 to 20:00 on all other days.

Access will be free of charge until the facility reaches full capacity. “Once the school year ends, we open this swimming pool, which is unique because, as an outdoor facility, it only opens in summer. However, it is a space

Free shuttle buses To facilitate access to Osunillas and improve mobility in the surrounding area, the Mijas Town Hall will provide free buses for those attending swimming lesson, running between the centre of Mijas Pueblo and Osunillas.

Specifically, as Alarcón explained, these shuttle buses will depart from the bus park in Plaza Virgen de la Peña on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 11:30 and 12:30.

The Mijas Town Hall, through its Family and Equal Opportunities department, is to organise a series of family scavenger hunts aimed at promoting co-responsibility and breaking down gender stereotypes.

This was announced on Tuesday 16th by the mayoress and head of the department, Ana Mata (PP), who explained that these family events will take place in the municipality’s three main centres: at Victoria Kent Park in Las Lagunas on the 20th,

shared family responsibility and work-life balance, promoting a balanced sharing of domestic and care tasks among all members of the household, with a particular focus on preventing gender roles and stereotypes from an early age.

According to María José Moreno, an adviser at the Women’s Centre, this campaign is driven, above all, “to prevent genderbased violence, which tends to spike during the summer and the

holidays. We have therefore organised this fun activity in which we want the whole family to get involved: mothers, fathers, children, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and young people”.

Games The activity will consist of a family scavenger hunt lasting a minimum of 2.5 hours and a maximum of 4 hours. It will comprise five different game stations, at

which families must complete challenges relating to co-responsibility, the division of domestic tasks, caregiving, the elimination of gender stereotypes and the balanced organisation of family life.

The activity will be organised into family groups or mixed teams that will rotate through the different stages, combining cooperative play, family reflection exercises, challenge-solving and teamwork.

Mijas Comunicación, in collaboration with the Historical Heritage Department of the Mijas Town Hall, has produced a documentary on the Phoenician necropolis at the Cortijo de Acebedo archaeological site. It will be premiered on the 29th of June at the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas, at an event attended by experts in the field. The screening will begin at 18:00 with free admission until full capacity is reached, followed by a panel discussion led by the coordinator of the Mijas Town Hall’s Historical Heritage Department, Desirée Piñero. “The documentary focuses on the Iron Age I cremation necropolis, dating from the 7th to the 6th centuries BC, where the data obtained during the excavations has been analysed by leading researchers from various universities. A team effort Entitled ‘Cortijo de Acebedo, much to discover’, the documentary began production in September 2024, although footage from earlier dates has been used, and has taken the public company over a year to complete. “The documentary, produced by Mijas Comunicación, a 100 per cent municipally-owned company, involved several technicians and utilised infographics, drones and all the latest technology to transport us back to that era, so that we can almost experience life as people did at that time”, said the joint CEO of Mijas Comunicación,

General Research Project The discovery of the Phoenician necropolis has been the focus of this documentary, which aims to disseminate some of the findings from the General Research Project currently being carried out at the site and authorised by theJunta de Andalucía.

Mijas prepares a night of bonfires and dancing for San Juan

F.M.R. The magic of San Juan Night will fill Plaza Virgen de la Peña next Tuesday 23rd of June. The programme will kick off at 20:00 with a performance

by Reme Fernández’s dance groups. Local talent will continue on stage at 21:00 with choreographies by Víctor Rojas’s students. At 22:00, one of the most eagerly awaited moments will arrive: the prize-giving ceremony for the traditional ‘júas’ competition. The pace will pick up at 22:30 with a concert by the cover band Maníacos. Their performance will serve as a prelude to the main event of the night, the popular burning of the ‘júas’ at 00:00.

La Cala and other locations The coastal town of La Cala is hosting a large-scale musical event. The Generación Vintash Orchestra takes to the stage at 22:00 to perform a wide-ranging repertoire. This first part of the show runs until 23:50, at which point there will be a break to light the bonfires and burn the ‘júas’ on the beach just before midnight. Once the fire of tradition has passed, the orchestra will resume its show at 00:30 until the party comes to a close.

The town’s programme is further enhanced by initiatives from various beachfront venues.

Chiringuito Los Moreno kicks off its line-up at 19:00 with a stellar bill featuring Funky Copla (19:30), SeaSick (21:30) and Mami Curl (23:00).

Meanwhile, La Lucera is organising an evening starting at 20:30 that promises the sea, firelight and good company.

Chiringuito Playamarina is upping the ante with a preparty on Saturday 20th of June, and has a grand dinner lined up for Tuesday 23rd of June from 20:30, featuring the reggae band Skafeinados. Finally, Chiringuito Papao is gearing up for the final stretch of this magical night, promising tradition, gastronomy and live performances by ‘Pasaba x aquí’ for all attendees.

Global Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Day is observed every year on the 21st of June.

It is an international awareness day for this incurable disease, aiming to highlight the medical and social needs of those libing with it. This year, Mijas will not be standing on the sidelines; a major charity event has been organised for this Saturday, 20th of June, to raise funds for the fight against the disease. The mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), presented the event alongside Juan Carrasco, president of the Benalela Association, and the councillor for Social Inclusion, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP).

“With this initiative, our aim is to raise funds for the vital research that a disease like ALS requires”, said the mayoress of Mijas, who stressed that “it usually manifests between the ages of 40 and 70 and carries a life expectancy of just three to four years.

This is why research is crucial to improve patients’ quality of life.

Society as a whole must join the fight; I am certain experts are working on it, but they often lack the resources needed for the exclusive dedication that a condition like ALS deserves”.
