The Mijas Town Hall has put out to tender the repair works for the swimming pool roof at the Las Lagunas sports centre, a facility that “is currently closed to the public due to deterioration suffered since its last inspection over 20 years ago, in 2005”, the council states.

With this initiative, the government team emphasises that it is “making progress towards

Specifically, a budget of 1,284,541.67 euros, including VAT, will be allocated to the project, and the deadline for interested companies to submit bids is open until the 15th of June. The project has been drafted by Ingesa Ingeniería y Diseño, SL, and involves repairing damage to various components of the roof, such as auxiliary structural elements, sandwich panels, waterproofing systems and drainage systems.

The Mijas Town Hall will install roofs over the outdoor courts at the municipality’s infant and primary schools, optimising the use of the facilities outside school hours for public interest activities, whether sporting, cultural or social. This will improve the thermal conditions for everyone, both students during school hours and the general public outside them.

To this end, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), signed an agreement on Friday 22nd with the Junta de Andalucía’s Provincial Education Delegation, headed by Miguel Briones.

The document outlines a commitment to closer integration of municipal centres into local social life.

As this extended use is often limited throughout the year by weather conditions, the Mijas Town Hall will install roofs that will be permanently incorpora-

sports courts in accordance with the technical project to be drafted by the Mijas Town Hall and authorised by the Andalusian Regional Government, without prejudice to any technical adaptations required at each site.

Now that the agreement is in force, the next step for the Mijas Town Hall will be to put the projects for the schools out to tender. These differ from one another due to their size, location and design. This will ensure greater comfort and protection

On Friday 22nd, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP), welcomed members of the Mijas Pueblo Association of Traders and Businesses (ACIM) to the Town Hall. This initial meeting, following the presentation of the association’s new executive committee chaired by Alejandro Jaime, served to analyse the sector’s primary needs.

Key issues such as mobility, parking, event promotion, the joint organisation of recreational initia-

tives, and ACIM’s contribution to municipal decision-making regarding the general interests of the commercial sector were on the table. The mayoress welcomed this initial meeting, which she described as “very satisfactory” for fostering joint action and achieving better results. “I am very pleased that we have an association with which we can organise activities and events, and resolve all those is-

by Vox urges the Government to “recognise the work of officers as a high-risk profession” Editorial Department

On Wednesday 27 May, during its monthly session, the full Council unanimously approved the motion tabled by Vox to reinforce the resources, protection and operational capacity of the Civil Guard against drug trafficking and organised crime. This item was defended by the party’s spokesperson, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson, and included, among other measures, “increasing staffing levels and improving resources, which are insufficient in Mijas, where the facilities are over half a century old; enhancing legal protection for officers so they can defend themselves; and recognising the Civil Guard’s work as a high-risk profession”. On this last point, Cuevas Dawson explained that “mafias are increasing their resources and capacity for action, and the State cannot afford to have those who protect us working at a disadvantage”.

This is a project that all the mayors of this municipality since I have been a councillor, starting with Mr Maldonado and Mr González, have promoted and taken an interest in seeing happen; I do not know whether Ms Mata is currently processing this”. The need for new barracks for the Civil Guard was also supported

Medal One of the points of agreement that generated controversy was that the awarding of the Medal of the Town since, as stated in the local regulations, “it may only be awarded for extraordinary merits that have taken place in Mijas”. On this matter, the mayoress Ana Mata (PP), stated that “it should specifically target the Benalmádena Maritime Service, which carries out surveillance along our Mijas coastline.

As for the individual aspect, it is less specific; therefore, we will discuss it with the town clerk to find a way to grant the Medal of the Town as requested by Vox”.

The Town Hall reminds owners that “they have a legal duty to maintain them in proper conditions of safety, hygiene, public appearance and conservation, in accordance with current town planning and municipal regulations”.

In the notice, Mata points out that failure to comply with these obligations may lead to appropria-

te administrative action, including the issuance of the relevant enforcement order. In the event of noncompliance, the Town Hall may carry out the work at the owner’s expense, as well as, where applicable, initiating disciplinary proceedings.

On the 6th of June, Mijas will host the Living Seagrass Meadow Festival, a public awareness and community engagement initiative focused on the conservation and restoration of seagrass meadows and their biodiversity. The event was presented on Thursday 28th by the councillor for the Environment in Mijas, Marco Cortés (PP); Irene Acosta, head of Volunteering at the Unicaja Foundation; and the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation (FAMM).

Coinciding with the celebrations for World Environment Day, the festival, which will take place on Torreón beach from 17:00 to 21:00,

is organised by the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, with the support of the Unicaja Foundation, and in collaboration with the Regional Ministry of Sustainability and Environment of the Junta de Andalucía. Cortés encouraged “everyone to come along, parents, older people and children, because it will be a festival for everyone, so that children can enjoy workshops, poetry, theatre and laboratory activities. It will be highly interactive so that everyone can learn about the importance of conserving seagrass meadows and posidonia, because in this respect, Mijas is the queen of the Costa del Sol”.

The president and scientific director of the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, Juan Antonio López, stated that “we are going to highlight the importance of the seagrass meadows right here in front of us for the countless ecosystem services they provide, such as water quality, coastal protection, biodiversity, oxygen production and CO2 capture”.

From Monday, 1st of June, the Mijas Town Hall will introduce a mandatory appointment system for its Citizen Services department, which operates at the main town hall in the village as well as the municipal branch offices in Las Lagunas and La Cala. The aim of this decision is to optimise public service delivery for Mijas residents needing to complete administrative tasks, saving them time and allowing them to better plan their schedules.

Specifically, the Citizen Services department handles the paperwork required to obtain census certificates and registration slips (‘volantes de empadronamiento’); the validation of digital

certificates; and registrations, changes of address or renewals on the municipal register (‘Padrón’).

To book an appointment applicants must access the electronic portal via the municipal website (www.mijas.es). Once there, they should go to the appointment section, where the specific service can be selected.

Costa del Soul Toastmasters moves its weekly public speaking meetings to the Danish Club The communication and leadership group wraps up its residency at the Las Lagunas UP building F.M.R. The Costa del Soul Toastmasters group held its final meeting on Tuesday 26th of May at the Las Lagunas UP building.

This venue has served as the group’s regular meeting place

throughout the current academic year, establishing a hub for those keen to improve their public speaking skills.

Change of venue Having concluded its schedule at the UP, the public speaking club has now determined its next location to ensure the continuity of its activities. From June, Costa del Soul Toastmasters will meet at the Danish Club, a venue situated in the Haza del Algarrobo residential area.

Bilingual dynamics The club is made up of individuals who hold weekly sessions, alternating between Spanish and English. The primary aim of these meetings is to develop communication skills, focusing on the art of public speaking.

The group’s methodology offers a positive and mutually supportive learning experience, empowering members to enhance their leadership skills, which directly translates into clear personal growth and greater selfconfidence.

Soroptimist holds its annual charity dinner

Soroptimist International Costa del Sol held its annual charity dinner on Saturday 23rd with the aim of raising funds for various projects the organisation runs, not only in Mijas but also in other parts of the world. “This dinner is to raise funds for the different projects we currently have in Mijas, the rest of Spain and the rest of the world”, explained the president, Aura Roderick.

The evening, held at Benavra restaurant in Torrenueva, brought together members, collaborators, institutional representatives and local residents committed to the group’s charitable work. Thanks to the initiative, they raised 3,500. To this end, the evening featured several activities, including a tombola with small prizes and a raffle with high-value gifts. One of the main attractions, as every year, was the

The event included a tombola, a raffle and the traditional ‘La Gorda del Verano’ draw ‘La Gorda del Verano’ prize, also aimed at those who were unable to attend but wished to support the cause. “They have been sold a ticket for a draw called ‘La Gorda del Verano’, where they can win a single prize of 300 euros”, explained the president.

Projects During her speech, Roderick reviewed some of the organisation’s most important projects. Among these, she highlighted the mentoring programmes for young women seeking career and personal guidance. “I, for example, am mentoring two women, one Spanish and the other Iranian. We help them forge their own path through work and shape their future,” she said, adding that the organisation also works to award scholarships to women pursuing

postgraduate studies.

Another of Soroptimist’s pillars is support for women who are victims of gender-based violence, an area that Roderick described as “especially tough”. In this regard, she explained that they have a group called ‘Mujeres en Violeta’ (Women in Violet), through which they provide emergency assistance to women who leave their homes with no resources.

“We pay for their accommodation, provide them with food and help clothe them”, said the president, who encouraged the public to support the organisation, either as volunteers or through donations. “We are always looking for people: women who want to work on this and, at the same time, people who want to make financial donations”, she noted.

The councillor also encouraged people to get involved in these charitable initiatives. “You just have to take the first step and they will take care of guiding us through the rest”, he said. Furthermore, he emphasised the importance of these associations as a complement to the council’s work, especially in situations requiring a rapid response. “Sometimes you can’t wait. The needs are urgent and the response cannot depend on an official report”, Bravo concluded.

During the evening, the club also announced the launch of the call for nominations for the 5th Soroptimist Award, which recognises local organisations working towards greater sustainability.
