The Mijas Lab-Tourism Cluster, a bimonthly working group comprising the Mijas Town Hall and business representatives from the municipality’s tourism sector, analysed this week the expected impact of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España, which will close the 2026 Ladies European Tour season in November at La Cala Resort, and will be broadcast live in over 150 countries worldwide.

In this regard, members of the working group were informed that this tournament attracts global attention from fans of the sport and tourists who will potentially consider Mijas, with its 12 golf courses, a priority destination to visit and play, especially during the winter months. Challenges such as mobility, diversification of the offering, the introduction of health, nature or sensory attractions, and security were among the topics addressed on Thursday 21st at the second meeting, attended by fifteen of the municipality’s leading business entities.

Among the topics analysed, the state of the beaches following the sand regeneration investments carried out by Mijas Town Hall and the irrigation of golf courses with recycled water also stood out.

Furthermore, Mijas Lab analysed the municipality’s 2026 beach plan, detailed by the responsible municipal technicians, which contains all the services and advantages that the municipal

coastline makes available to users during the current high season, from lifeguards to toilets, bins, surveillance or cleaning, among many others.

Second edition The second meeting of the Mijas Lab-Tourism Cluster took place at La Zambra hotel and was attended by representatives in Mijas from the Costa del Sol Hotel Entrepreneurs Association (Aehcos); the Malaga Hospitality Association (Mahos); the Beach Business Association (Aeplayas) and the Mijas Beach Business Association.

Also participating were executives from the Mijas Golf Clubs Association; the Málaga Tourist Guides Association; Exploramás; the Mijas Leisure Industries Centre (CIO); the Andalusian Car Rental Business Association; Investur; Cepyme Mijas-Fuengirola; the Mijas Business Circle; the Mijas Radiotaxi Association; and the Mijas Craft Association.

Mijas offers a family respite programme for carers of children in inclusive care I.P./ B.M. The Mijas Town Hall has launched a new family respite programme aimed at families with children with special needs or in foster care. It will take place at the Entrerríos youth hostel during the first three weekends of June, offering a comprehensive leisure alternative to children and young people aged between 4 and 20.

The aim of this initiative, as the title of the programme suggests, is to give a respite to caregiving families, offering them

some free time so they can rest, carry out personal activities or simply disconnect”. “They all perform a silent, constant and deeply valuable work, and precisely for that reason, institutions have an obligation to be by their side”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), last Tuesday, adding that “many times, these families do not have a space for themselves, which is why from the Town Hall we have proposed this option, which facilitates this work-life balance and always

guarantees that their children are in good hands”.

Shifts The programme will run over three shifts, the first on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of June, the second on the 13th and 14th of June, and the third on Saturday 20th of June. A bus will collect participants from Mijas Pueblo, La Cala and Las Lagunas, and take them to the hostel, where they will have entertainment from 10:00 to 17:30, “with sports activi-

winners of the 28th Sports Gala, which is organised every year by Mijas Comunicación, in collaboration with the Mijas Town Hall.

It was an awards ceremony marked by many emotional moments, such as when CA Mijas athlete Mendo thanked his family and, especially, his coach, José Manuel Cerezo, “because he has brought a smile back to my face through running”, he said with a

lump in his throat. Also special was the dedication of the very young Sohail gymnast, Shekhanina, who wished to dedicate the trophy “to my coach, my club and my family”.

Nor should we overlook the great gesture by Luiz Hernanz, president of Sala de Armas Adalid Mijas, towards the workers of the Sports Department of the Mijas Town Hall for their dedication,

after collecting one of the two lifetime achievement awards for the 20th anniversary of the sports entity; the other was received by CD Cala de Mijas, led by its president Francisco Mota, accompanied by an illustrious and key person in the club like Cristobal Lozano, who recalled the beginnings of the red-and-white team: “I was a child then, I was 16 or 17 years old”. Since then, five decades have passed and that must be celebrated.

Always with us One of the highlights of the evening was provided by our colleague Miguel Gil, a camera operator at Mijas Comunicación and, in recent years, a playout operator, who didn’t want to miss the opportunity to join us at this gala and present one of the awards.

The director of the public media outlet, Laura Delgado, had some very warm words for him and her staff: “Each and every person who has been at Mijas Comunicación will always be in our

hearts, and to you, Miguel, thank you very much for your entire career with the company”.

It is impossible to forget one of the key figures in the town’s sports news coverage: Antonio García Rayo, who served as this station’s Head of Sport until his passing in August 2004 following a long illness. Indeed, if this gala is still going strong today, it is thanks to him; he was its driving force and director of numerous programmes on both Radio Mijas and Mijas 3.40 TV: Minuto 90, Superpodium and Deporte Cantera, among others.

One of Antonio’s fellow travellers was José Luis Pros, who shared many hours on air in these programmes as a contributor and basketball expert. Another radio star who passed away last March at the age of 69.

Finally, a huge thank you to the Sohail and CP Mijas rhythmic gymnastics clubs for their selfless dedication and for adding that touch of elegance and style to our event.

The Mijas Town Hall has awarded the project for the El Burrito Interpretation Centre, an initiative aimed at promoting awareness, protection and conservation of the donkey, an icon of the municipality. The company OLUZ has been commissioned to conceive and design the space, which will be located on the southern road, next to Camino de las Canteras, on a 10,226-square-metre plot.

The contract budget amounts to 39,782.38 euros and the execution period for the project is 60 days. The document will soon be available to take the next step: putting the works

out to tender and constructing a recreational park on the site, whose rugged topography will facilitate interaction with the free-roaming donkeys.

Raising

awareness of donkeys’ rights and welfare is another of the objectives The objectives are to improve global awareness of animal rights and welfare, create a donkey observatory, enable walks along shaded, tree-lined paths, and involve donkeys in forest management.

Furthermore, donkeys will be able to ‘retire’ in the park, and there will be the possibility of

taking in adult animals for their recovery and subsequent rehoming. There will also be a Mijas Donkey Interpretation Centre.

All this will be complemented by a network of trails and recreational areas.

Capacity The project proposes the construction of three large modules for the donkeys, another for veterinary use and a final one to serve as a storeroom. The stables will have a usable floor area that allows the animals to enter, turn around, move and lie down without difficulty. In total, there are twenty-four compartments, each with capacity for two donkeys, meaning the facility can accommodate 48 animals.

Each compartment must have a water source for a drinking trough and a light point, as well

PLOT 10,000 m2 Next to the southern road The plot, covering 10,226.76 square metres, is situated next to the southern road and behind the auditorium in Mijas Pueblo. It is set in a natural, sloping landscape. as wall rings to allow the animals to be tethered, thereby ensuring that maintenance and cleaning tasks can be carried out.

Furthermore, the stables can be situated at the lower or upper parts of the paths, making use of the natural contours of the land, with semi-underground enclosures integrated into the landscape and a green roof.

Services It is worth noting that the plot has guaranteed infrastructure services nearby, ranging from the drinking water supply and electricity networks running along Camino de las Canteras to the wastewater drainage system, which runs parallel to the

existing stream. The backbone of the park is the main path, five metres wide, from which branch the two-metre-wide access paths to the stables, designed to allow the passage of maintenance and feed delivery vehicles.

Areas The road will be constructed using aggregate base course (zahorra) and will divide the park into two sections: the aforementioned module zone on one hand, and another comprising maintained paths, nature trails, fenced meadows linked to the stables, a riding arena and an open area for waste management.

The event has been specially designed for the enjoyment of children of all ages as well as adults, with a wide range of activities filling the site, ranging from sport to gastronomy, culture, and art.

A multitude of activities The 2nd Family Day will begin at 10:30, although the Gran Parque will be open from 9:00, and will run until 21:00. On Tuesday 19th, the Mijas Foreigners Department presented its activities ahead of the summer season and reported on changes to the solidarity tables, which are bringing forward their dates so they do not coincide with the local fairs. On the one hand, the Lions Club Summer Fair and, on the other, Mijas Felina Day, which will take place on the 24th of May from 10:00 to 16:00 with gastronomy, entertainment and a charity market in the square in front of the La Cala Branch Office.

“We have prepared a schedule from 10:00 to 14:00 with homemade food prepared by our members, both sweet and savoury, and at 12:00, we’ll have Naima and her girls with belly dancing”, explained the secretary of Mijas Felina, Manuela Bernardo.

Also in May, on Sunday 31st, and with the collaboration of the Foreigners Department,

comes the Summer Fair organised by the Lions. “They also do it to raise funds to be able to maintain their charitable work throughout the year, and there will be music, activities, food, a second-hand market, and, as a new feature, a fashion show”, said the councillor for Foreigners at the Mijas Town Hall, Mario Bravo (PP). It will be in La Butibamba Park from eleven in the morning, a fair in which there will be 40 craft stalls and activities for children.

Ed. Dept. A new activity has been launched by the Mijas Town Hall Youth Department: this time, an excursion to the well-known Caminito del Rey. This was announced on the morning of the 20th of May by the councillor for Youth, Melisa Ceballos (PP), who stated that the event will take place on the 7th of June.

According to the councillor, “it is a unique opportunity to enjoy nature, outdoor sports and healthy leisure in one of the most impressive landscapes in the province of Málaga”. To facilitate transport for all those attending, the department has arranged a free bus service which is also included, as are the entrance tickets to the site.

Participants will be picked up in the morning at the Las Lagunas fairground.

The Youth Department highlights that “this activity seeks to promote healthy leisure, socialising among local young people and the discovery of the area’s natural heritage through a unique experience”.

Registration Due to the high demand this destination usually attracts and the capacity limitations of the route itself, places are limited and will be allocated in strict order of registration via the form provided for this purpose, which can be accessed through the QR code on the poster.

Priority is given to young people aged between 18 and 35, but if any places remain available, they will be opened up to the general public. It is advisable to wear sports clothing and footwear, and bring sunscreen, water and lunch.

This weekend, more than two hundred delegates from the Federation of Lions Clubs of Spain gathered in Mijas to celebrate the Grand Gala of their 59th National Convention.

The meeting, held on Saturday 16th at the Hotel Ilunion Hacienda in Mijas, has consolidated its position as a key event for coordinating the organisation’s humanitarian work and strengthening the volunteer network at both national and international levels.

The official proceedings began with the traditional parade of banners, a moving tribute to the flags and a respectful remembrance of members who passed away over the past year. In addition to these symbolic acts, the annual meeting serves, as stipulated in its statutes, to vote on new regulatory motions and to carry out the mandatory renewal of the executive structure.

The chairman of the Council of Governors of Spain, Fernando Juanes, highlighted the importance of this meeting for the future of the organisation and reviewed the main achievements of his term of office. “One issue I always highlight is the DANA disaster in Valencia,

Hosting for the third time Our town hosted this summit for the third time in its history, demonstrating the enormous social and charitable influence of the two local branches operating in the municipality: Mijas Pueblo and La Cala.

Luis Domínguez, spokesperson for the Mijas Lions Club and past international director, spoke highly of the choice of venue, stating: “It is a great honour to have so many friends and colleagues from all over Spain. This is the third time our club has organised a national convention and colleagues are coming from all over: Galicia, the Canary Islands, Barcelona, Madrid, the Basque Country, the Valencia region and, of course, Andalusia”.

The La Cala club, made up mainly of English speakers, does an incredible job with its charity shops and its support for our international foundation”.

Community solidarity The local government team backed the opening session, praising the movement’s track record. During his speech, the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP), highlighted

the value of public-private cooperation as an essential cog in society’s wheel. “On behalf of the Town Hall, I wanted to welcome them and explain that, no matter how much the administration does, we will never be able to reach everyone. It is vital to have private associations that complement this official solidarity on their own initiative, because they reach every corner and do so much faster than the administration”, Bravo acknowledged.

The councillor expressed his deep gratitude for the work carried out by the Lions at a local level, bringing to a close a ceremony that strengthens the support networks of one of the world’s largest voluntary organisations.

ACE SHIN holds an open day at its shelter C.L. The ACE SHIN association, known nationally as Animal Care España, organised an open day last Sunday 17th to raise funds for the animals in its care and showcase those available for adoption. Stalls were also set up with crafts and handmade items, as well as food and drink for those in attendance.

This animal shelter looks after a large number of dogs and cats,

The main aim was to raise funds for the upkeep and care of the more than 500 dogs and 200 cats they look after offering them food, care and medical attention daily. It runs on donations or membership fees.

According to Wietse Haak, a

member and volunteer, “we have many animals here and maintaining this costs a lot of money every month. We always need help and support in any way possible. Víctor Manuel Ramírez, the shelter’s manager, assured that the event “aims to bring the local community closer to the work done at the shelter”.

As a preventive measure and on a regular basis, the Andalusian Forest Fire Service (Infoca) carries out prescribed burns in areas with abundant dry vegetation and close to residential areas. On Wednesday 20th, one such burn was carried out in the upper part of El Chaparral residential area, fortunately without complication. To carry out this type of burn, Infoca first measures, almost to the millimetre, the wind, humidity and temperature parameters expected that day at the site, all to ensure the fire is kept under control at all times and burns itself out without the need for water. “In this case, we can only burn when there is a ‘Levante’ wind so as not to affect the population, which is our main objective”, explained Alejandro Molina, director of Infoca in Málaga, adding that “this winter we have barely been able to carry out any burns because we have had so much rain; in fact, until last week this plot wouldn’t even burn. From Thursday 28th to Sunday 31st of May, La Cala will host the 2nd Somos Uno Festival, a multicultural event that will bring together live music, international cuisine and traditional dances from different countries. Organised by the Cubanos Unidos Association, in collaboration with the Town Hall, the festival will take place from 12:00 to 00:00 and will feature cultural and culinary representatives from twelve countries, such as Argentina, the Netherlands, Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Uruguay, Spain, Peru, Chile, Italy and Japan. It will also feature a special collaboration

from Senegal with various performances.

Over four days, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy musical performances, folklore exhibitions, traditional dances and a wide range of international cuisine, transforming the venue into a space where cultures come together through music, art and tradition. The event aims to promote integration, respect and cultural exchange among the different communities living on the Costa del Sol. The organisation has also asked for the collaboration of the Mijas Craft Association to set up a stall.

Protection volunteers, “who are here to lend a hand in case the situation worsens, which it hasn’t, but we have provided two fire engines ready for any call-out”, said the councillor for the Fire Service, Francisco Jerez (Vox).

Jessica Persson’s Arts Centre students exhibit at the Tourist Office

The Ukrainian Cultural Centre ‘United Family’ to host its Vyshyvanka Festival from the 22nd to the 24th

Ed. Dept. On Monday 18th, the Mijas Town Hall inaugurated the exhibition ‘Handmade: The Power of Creation’ at the Mijas Pueblo Tourist Office, a showcase of work by the students of the artist and teacher at the Mijas Arts Centre, Jessica Persson.

The exhibition features works by students of various ages in painting, drawing and ceramics.

The display is complemented by some of Persson’s own representative ceramic works.

The Ukrainian-Spanish Cultural Association Espacio Cultural is celebrating a cultural encounter at its United Family Cultural Centre from the 22nd to the 24th of May, which will showcase Ukrainian heritage and strengthen cultural ties with the local community on the Costa del Sol. The festival will showcase the Vyshyvanka (a traditional shirt featuring protective embroidery of profound identity value) and Borsch (the iconic beetroot soup recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage

by UNESCO).

Attendees will be able to enjoy a programme that includes traditional cooking displays, a craft fair and workshops, as well as

the main programme of concerts and the ethnic costume parade, which will take place on Saturday 23rd of May at 20:00 hours.

The event will have a charitable character. An auction and a raffle will be organised during the festival, and the funds raised will go towards the development and maintenance of this centre.
