The municipality of Mijas has renewed its five Blue Flags, a mark of quality and sustainability awarded by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), which represents a major environmental and tourism boost for its coastline, according to a statement made on Wednesday the 6th by thee mayoress of the city, Ana Mata (PP).

Thus, Royal Beach-La Luna (Calahonda), Riviera, El Bombo, El Chaparral and La Cala will retain these flags in 2026 and 2027, which internationally recognise beaches that excel in four key areas: excellent water quality, environmental education, environmental management (cleanliness,

Mata explained that for a tourist municipality like Mijas, “having five Blue Flags and being recognised for our quality is a source of pride and also recognition of the work we do all year round”.

The mayoress pointed out that “the flags aren’t awarded simply because the sand and water quality are good; they come with a

range of services that we provide throughout the year; these services are not only cleaning, sand sifting or beach maintenance, but also emptying litter bins and containers and working in constant harmony with each and every ‘chiringuito’ (beach bar) to ensure the area is fully adapted”.

Blue Centre In addition to the five Blue Flags, ADEAC has also renewed the Blue Trail distinction for the Coastal Path and the Blue Centre for El Torreón, in recognition of the interpretation centre’s contribution

to highlighting local ecosystems and raising public awareness of environmental issues.

Mijas, ‘Soludable’ Furthermore, Mijas has received the special ‘Soludable’ mention, awarded for its work in preventing risks related to temperature and the sun. “We’re talking about those islands of shade that have been prepared along our coastline to avoid the sun, which is so harmful, and because we also run that prevention campaign to shield ourselves from the sun and avoid any kind of problem related to skin cancer”, added the mayoress.

ADEAC reported that in 2026 its special mentions were assessed by specialist juries, a total of 58 professionals (24 doctors and 34 graduates).

Mijas-Las Lagunas has been promoted from Tercera RFEF, and celebrations began immediately. Following the 0-0 draw between Melilla and Motril on

Wednesday the 6th, the goal difference meant the Las Lagunas side no longer needed a result in their final match in Granada this Sunday the 10th. They could therefore start celebrating their hard-earned and well-deserved promotion to Segunda RFEF, the fourth tier of Spanish football, just as they did at the Regino Hernández Martín Sports Complex. Similar celebrations are expected this Sunday when they return to Mijas after facing Granada B. “I am speechless”, said the president of CP Mijas-Las Lagunas, José Manuel Quero. “We have managed to become Tercera RFEF champions in only our second year as newcomers and reach Segunda RFEF. It is almost unbelievable”, he concluded.

The coach did not expect to reach this position either. José Antonio García acknowledged on Wednesday that it has been a “very tough” season: “We started the season with many doubts, but this group always believed, kept working, and kept faith in the coaching staff”.

“The reward has finally arrived, and it is a source of great joy”, summed up team captain, Cristóbal Jiménez, who watched the decisive match with his teammates in a bar. “It’s a historic moment for the club”, added the captain, recalling that just a few years ago, they were in “Pri-

mera Andaluza, a provincial category”.

“Historic” and “unforgettable” were the two words chosen by the club’s sporting director, José Miguel Sánchez, to define the feat: “We are incredibly proud and happy with all the work we’ve been doing”.

Residents and visitors from across Spain chose Mijas to celebrate Labour Day M.F.“Delicious”. That was the verdict on the sardines served on Friday, the 1st of May, in La Cala de Mijas during the traditional

‘sardinada’ (sardine feast) organised once again by the Mijas Town Hall’s Festivities Department to mark Labour Day. The event was

a resounding success, not only due to the number of locals and residents from the surrounding areas who attend year after year, but also the many visitors from across Spain drawn by the charm of this unique celebration.

In total, 600 kilos of sardines were served free of charge, expertly skewered by master ‘espeteros’ right on the sands of La Cala, at the foot of El Torreón watchtowers. “It is a day on which we not only continue to work and advocate for the issues that need improving for the sake of all workers, but it is also a day for leisure and enjoying Mijas. As I always say, Mijas offers a range of possibilities

that other municipalities do not; we are the best place in the world to enjoy, to live, and above all, to share”, said the town’s mayoress, Ana Mata (PP).

Groups of visitors from Córdoba, Granada, Seville, Alicante and Madrid, among other places, visited La Cala on the 1st of May. Some were returning for another year, while others experienced the sardine feast for the first time.

“We are once again celebrating this traditional event to mark Labour Day in such a privileged spot as La Cala”, said the councillor for Festivities at the Mijas Town Hall, Silvia Marín (PP). “This event is held by the Festivities Department

so that people can enjoy themselves, and that goal is certainly being met”, she added.

Likewise, numerous councillors from the government team attended the event. “We’ve been very lucky with the weather; it’s a lovely day and we are here supporting the municipal workers. Thank goodness for the ligh breeze keeping the air moving”, said the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox).

Regarding the turnout, he added: “The attendance is spectacular. I am aware that many people have come from out of town, which serves as a great draw for them to keep returning to our region in the future”, he concluded.

At the extraordinary plenary session held on Tuesday the 5th at the Mijas Town Hall, the government team approved 300,000 euros for the electronic office and the acquisition of IT equipment to further improve administrative management, internal processes, and citizen services. This measure will help “make accounting more automated than it is now and allow us to exercise better internal control”, emphasised the councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP). In this way, essential tools will be updated to reduce red tape and processing times in dealings between the administration and citizens.

In addition, the payment of invoices from the Festivities Department totalling 500,000 euros was approved; these had previously been rejected due to a dispute over who was responsible for paying the fees to the General Society of Authors and Publishers (SGAE) for the musical performances at the three local fairs in 2024. Now that the company has withdrawn the legal claim it had previously filed, an agreement has been reached and the Mijas Town Hall will settle the invoices. “There were certain discrepancies because, under the contract award,

that company was supposed to take care of the payment to the SGAE, and that company claimed it had done so but could not provide supporting documentation,” explained Bravo, who highlighted that “we have reached an agreement with this company to deduct 8%, which is the maximum we could consider subject to payment to the SGAE, and pay the rest”.

Both the purchase of software aimed at improving e-government and the payment of outstanding invoices for musical performances at the town’s fairs were included in the budget amendment initia-

lly approved by the government team, amounting to 800,000 euros.

Criticism Criticism from the opposition, which voted against the budget amendment, came from both the Municipal Socialist Group and the Ciudadanos group, who reproached the government team for “the lack of planning with the third budget amendment in four months”.

Referring to the invoice relating to the Festivities Department, the Socialist spokesperson, Roy Pérez, asked Bravo: “Is the 576,000

euros owed to a company for performances at the 2024 fairs a necessary credit to fulfil an obligation? Because if it is a committed credit to a company for having provided a service, as the report itself states, we already have here the first grounds for a future objection because you have omitted a credit that was mandatory”.

For his part, the Ciudadanos spokesperson, José Carlos Martín, emphasised that “as the days go by, ideas and needs arise that you hadn’t anticipated, and then the urgency appears, of course, because when something is for-

gotten it becomes urgent, but if it had been planned, it wouldn’t be urgent”.

Bravo defended the need to carry out this new adjustment in the municipal accounts: “Of course that money was allocated in the 2024 budget; it couldn’t be put in the 2026 budget because it was an extra 500,000 euros.

We’re taking it now from the surplus, which is where those 540,000 euros we had from 2024 ended up; it wasn’t a recognised and outstanding invoice as you say (referring to the Socialist spokesperson).”

PLENARY SESSION

The plenary gives final approval for 18.49 million-euro budget amendment I.Pérez. The Mijas Town Council held an extraordinary plenary session on Tuesday the 5th to, among other matters, give final approval to a budget amendment of 18.49 million euros. The measure, first presented in March, has now been approved following the government team’s dismissal of the only objection received.

As explained by the councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP), a local resident submitted the objection to the March budget amendment, criticising its urgency as it had received an unfavourable report from the Comptroller’s Office. Furthermore, the objection pointed out the failure to include butget lines for social housing (VPO) or

a care home for the elderly. “The government team has rejected this objection based on reports from municipal technicians; therefore, today we are voting to ratify that rejection so that this budget allocation can come into force and we can continue with the operation of this Council”, argued the councillor.

The item was rejected by the opposition, Ciudadanos and PSOE. The spokesperson for Cs at the Mijas Town Council, José Carlos Martín, pointed out that “in four months we have had one ordinary budget, three budget amendments and countless surplus incorporations. It gives the impression that the government team is not clear about what it wants to do”. In response, the coun-

cillor for the Economy clarified that “for us, everything is urgent and, whenever we can meet a need, we will do so as quickly as possible, for example, with amendments of this kind.”

For his part, the spokesperson for the socialist group, Roy Pérez, spoke about the Comptroller’s report, “which once again stresses the need to promote an economic and financial plan, of which nothing is known even though we are already in May 2026, because it seems you are just kicking the ball down the field”.

financed through the surplus, that is to say, no debt has been created and furthermore it does not entail permanent or ongoing expenditure”, adding that, “although we do not yet have this document, in such cases, the legislation also allows the government team, as the majority in this plenary, to overrule this audit objection and authorise the expenditure”.

The amendment includes several items, such as 4.5 million to

bolster the Basic Income service and another 2.12 million for the installation of CCTV cameras in the municipality. It also provides almost 400,000 euros for the Home Care programme and around 430,000 euros for sports facilities.

Further investments are included for energy installations, machinery and equipment for the Civil Protection and Fire Brigade services, public road infrastructure and telecommunications.

The founder of the ‘Club de Malasmadres’ and president of the association ‘Yo No Renuncio’, Laura Baena, will give a talk and workshop in Mijas entitled ‘The Invisible Burden of Motherhood’.

It will take place on the 15th of May, starting at 19:00 hours, at the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas. The event is organised by the Department for Family and Equal Opportunities of the Mijas Town Hall, which will provide a bus service from Mijas Pueblo and La Cala to facilitate attendance.

Calahonda launches a parish route as a prelude to the Camino de Santiago F.M.R. On Friday the 1st, San Miguel de Calahonda parish became the starting point for a two-hour walk to the chapel of Nuestra Señora del Rocío. The route, created to prepare for the community’s expedition along the Portuguese Camino de Santiago in August, became an exercise in community building. The main architect of the walk, Fernando Luque, parish priest of La Cala and San Miguel de Calahonda, highlighted the event’s purpose: “The idea is to complete a stage that helps us prepare a little for the Camino de Santiago, but also to foster togetherness and

It was back in 1986 when Aquamijas first opened its doors to provide fun for young and old alike during the summer months; today it has established itself as one of the leading family attractions on the Costa del Sol. Last Friday, the 1st of May, the new season kicked off, and it’s a particularly special one as the park is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

To mark the occasion, a special promotion was offered on the first day with tickets at half price.

The general manager of the water park, María del Mar Asesio, explained some of the new features for this 40th anniversary: “We have placed great emphasis on entertainment and leisure, so that when people visit the park, they can enjoy not only the water attractions but also other options for a more complete day out”. Entertainment, face painting for children, aqua aerobics, and a DJ in the afternoon are some of the new features, though there are more: “We’ve launched our 40th-anniversary

Mójate con Mijas On Monday, the 4th of May, as part of ‘Mojate con Mijas’ (Dive in with Mijas) campaign, the Mijas Town Hall, through the Department for Social Inclusion, distributed 4,000 tickets for Aquamijas. The tickets, donated by the company, have been given to local social organisations.

In total, more than ten groups in Mijas will benefit, including Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo, AECC, Mejor en Familia, AFA Mijas, AFA Mijas Fuengirola, Apaffer, the Red Cross, Avatés, Sembrando Sonrisas, Cudeca, Adimi, Sos-

tea Autismo and Cáritas.

The councillor for Social Inclusion, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), expressed her “gratitude once again to Aquamijas for providing these tickets. We are now distributing them equally among the associations and social groups in Mijas. This way, they can exchange them for items their group needs or give them to their members”.

The director of Aquamijas, María del Mar Asesio, stated that “our company is deeply committed to social issues, and to the people of Mijas. Once again, we are here to hand over these free tickets to various associations so they can distribute them as they see fit. In total, we are providing 4,000 tickets to 12 organisations”.

The organisations have received batches of tickets for specific dates. Each will now distribute them in exchange for various items: personal hygiene and cleaning products, school supplies, or non-perishable goods. Each organisation will handle requests at its headquarters.

Associations Speaking on behalf of the Avatés association, its president, Pepi Moya, stated that “we will be asking for five non-perishable items in exchange for a ticket.

These should be handed in at the association’s kiosk in Pasaje San Valentín, next to the health centre”.

For her part, the president of Sembrando Sonrisas, Rosa Planelles, stated that “we will offer one
